Lana Turner and Diane Varsi in Peyton Place (Mark Robson, 1957) Cast: Lana Turner, Lee Philips, Diane Varsi, Hope Lange, Arthur Kennedy, Lloyd Nolan, Russ Tamblyn, Terry Moore, David Nelson, Barry Coe, Betty Field, Mildred Dunnock, Leon Ames, Lorne Greene. Screenplay: John Michael Hayes, based on a novel by Grace Metalious. Cinematography: William C. Mellor. Art direction: Jack Martin Smith, Lyle R. Wheeler. Film editing: David Bretherton. Music: Franz Waxman. Take the sex away from Grace Metalious's lurid novel Peyton Place and what you have left is a portrait of small-town narrow-mindedness and hypocrisy, very much in the tradition of fiction by much better writers, from Mark Twain to Sherwood Anderson, Sinclair Lewis, and William Faulkner. Squeezed by the strictures of the Production Code, the film version of the novel becomes a kind of reworking of Thornton Wilder's Our Town. There was narrow-mindedness and hypocrisy in Wilder's Grover's Corners, but only in the background. It bubbles to the surface in the adaptation of Metalious's novel, which replaces Wilder's heroine, the romantic Emily Webb, who loves her family and her town, with the embittered Allison MacKenzie (Diane Varsi), who hates not only the gossip-ridden town but also her mother, Constance (Lana Turner), for having withheld the information that Allison is the product of Constance's liaison with a married man. The film version of Peyton Place turns what in the novel was sexual molestation of a girl by her father into a rape by her stepfather, side-stepping the incest issue a bit, and converts an abortion into a miscarriage. The randy teenagers of the novel do nothing more shocking in the film than make out a bit and go skinny-dipping. The film hints a little that the shy mama's boy Norman Page (Russ Tamblyn) may be gay -- he refers to himself as a "sissy" once -- but relieves him of that stigma by having him join the paratroopers when war breaks out and come home bold and no longer shy. (It would never occur to Hollywood or its audiences of the day that a gay man could be bold and masculine.) In short, Peyton Place makes today's viewer do a lot of decoding. Which, aside from the fact that at 157 minutes it's overlong and a lot of the dialogue is heavy-handedly expository (and sometimes just banal), doesn't fatally undermine it as entertainment. There are some very good performances: Varsi, Turner, and Tamblyn received Oscar nominations, as did Arthur Kennedy as the slavering rapist stepfather, and Hope Lange as his victim-stepdaughter. Metalious, of course, hated it all the way to the bank.

“BILL TO REPEAL BAN ON LIQUOR,” Kingston Whig-Standard. February 17, 1933. Page 1 & 14. ---- Vote on Colonel Robinson's Bill Was 100 to 44 Against ---- PRISON REFORM NEED ---- Communist Discussion Again Takes Place in House of Commons ---- OTTAWA, Feb. 17 — Liquor, railways, penitentiaries, Communists, and Section 98 of the Criminal Code provided a varied bill of fare yesterday which Parliament leaves today to revert lo the more prosaic business of voting sums of money for varied branches of the public service.
The liquor involved was not the liquor drunk by Canadians but the liquor consumed by the supposedly dry citizens of the United States. The question was whether they should be permitted to obtain their liquor from Canada and the answer was "no."
By a vote of 100 to 44, the House of Commons defeated Col. S. C. Robinson's bill to repeal the ban imposed on the export of liquor to the United States in 1930. Col. Robinson comes from Windsor and in the day before 1930, scores of little boats used to race across the Detroit river carrying Canadian liquor and on every shipment the Government of Canada collected a tax. Now there is no more export and no more tax.
His argument was Canada was uselessly throwing away needed revenue trying to keep country dry that would not be dry in any case.
Both Premier R. B. Bennett and Mr. Mackenzie King opposed the change and the majority of the House agreed with them.
Railway Bill in Senate The Senate Railway Committee placed its final approval on the Railway Bill which implements the recommendations of the Duff Royal Commission provides a new organisation for the Canadian National Railways and requires the two railway systems to co-operate in eliminating wasteful competition. The main principles of the bill were left unchanged and it will now receive third reading in the Senate and be passed on to the House of Commons.
Penitentiaries Reviewed Penitentiaries were under review in both Houses of Parliament. The Common discussed a proposal to limit the hour of work of both guards and convicts to eight hours, but it was dropped when Hon. Hugh Guthrie, Minister of Justice, stated it was impracticable at the present time.
In the Senate, Senator John Lewis of Toronto pressed the need of prison reform and accused the Government of arrogance and obstinacy in refusing an inquiry into penitentiary conditions. His resolution urging prison discipline should be based on the principle of reformation rather than punishment was passed with an amendment which stressed the need of protecting society against offenders.
Communists figured in the House of Commons discussions as J. S. Woodsworth bill to repeal section 98 of the Criminal Code came up again for discussion. John R. MacNicol, from Toronto, said most of the agitation for repeal was carried on by Communists and Socialists.
Hon. Ernest Lapointe, former Minister of Justice supported the repeal proposal, however, and declared he was as much opposed to Communism as any one: it was a poor way to fight communism, he thought, to enact arbitrary legislation contrary to all principle of law and justice and offensive to many people who had no connection with communism.
Export Ban Repeal of the export ban, said Mr. King, would place the Government of Canada in the position of "knowingly and openly aiding and abetting smugglers in the violation of the laws of a friendly and neighboring country." It would encourage nun-run' nln along the Canadian frontier making Windsor and other border points a base for criminal operations and "If we are reduced in this country to a position where we can get our revenue and provide employment only by becoming partner in the rum-running business, things have come to a strange pass.”
Hon. Raymond Morand (Cons. Essex East) declared that the only effect the export ban had been to deprive the Canadian treasury of large incomes and carry out a "noble gesture” that meant nothing. The officials whose integrity was to be protected now signed permits for liquor going to St. Pierre and West Indies, knowing full well that it was destined for the United States and were therefore just as much allies of the smuggler as they had been before, he said.
As a result of the recent riots in federal penitentiaries, the number of guards at the three prisons where riots broke out had been increased, Hon. Hugh Guthrie, Minister of Justice, told the House. Another result of the riots will be that more attention will be paid in future to the selection of guards.
Mr. Guthrie opposed a a bill introduced -by Thomas Reid (Lib., New Westminster) to establish the eight-hour day for both guards and prisoners in penitentiaries. The law now provides for an eight-hour day on all Dominion Government work, except in the penitentiary service.
After a brief discussion, Mr. Reid withdrew the bill, stating he was pleased with Mr Guthrie's views and did not wont to press the matter at present.
The "slavish adherence” of members of Parliament to their part was caustically denounced by Miss Agnes MacPhail (C.C.F., South-East Grey), in debate in the resolution advocating repeal at Section 98.
Miss MacPhail delivered strictures at what she called efforts of J. R. MacNichol (Cons. Toronto North-East) to link the C. C .F. up with the Communists. The Communists hated the C. C. F. members because the latter stood between them and violence in this country.
Humphrey Mitchell (Lib., Hamilton East) was not interested in revolution "or would-be comic opera dictators.” His viewpoint on the matter was that of trade unionism.
No person had a right to enter this country and preach the forcible overthrow of democratic institutions. The present Government had more responsibility for the existence of the Communist party than any other that had gone before.

100+ Books
In the past day or two, I posted online asking my friends and family to send me book recommendations. Along with their suggestions, books I had heard about and wanted to read, and some classics, I have made a list of around 106 books that I am going to read hopefully in the coming year.
This blog is meant to detail the books I read, if I liked them, my favorite quotes or parts, and what I got out of them. I also might post things that I write if I feel like it. Note that I will not be reading the books in order as I have better access to some than others (although I will read series on this list one after the other if all the books are on the list). 1825 June, Fri. 24
6 55/60
11
Gave Hotspur oat cake – At 8 40/60 went to the workmen – While I was there (standing at a little distance) Mr. Steel came (near 11). Told George Robinson he was authorized by Mr. Lewis Alexander to propose to George R– [Robinson] paying one pound a year to my uncle if he would let them have the road to Belvidere, and was authorized also to say that in this case he would answer for their being no opposition to our footpath – He owned the new one was the better road, but it was not nearer, and they would never give up – Owned he did not like the Shibden Hall lane – He never did like it – It was a dark disagreeable road – James Sykes overheard him say all this –
Got home to breakfast at 11 1/2 – Breakfast at 11 40/60 – Staid talking to my uncle and aunt – went upstairs at 12 40/60 – From then to 2 10/60 read aloud (to myself) the first 16 pages volume 3 Rousseau Confessions – Went to the workmen again at 2 20/60 and staid with them till they gave up a little after 6 –
George R– [Robinson] having sent his nephew Samuel Sowden to copy Mr. Lewis Alexander’s notice of appeal against our footpath pasted up against Coley church door, brought the copy home with me – Jackman finished the causeway today from the bridge to the Dolt style – The lane thro’ the wood covered with scraplings, and ready for ashes tomorrow – But Mr. Huntress was at Lower Brea this afternoon, and told George R– [Robinson] our great wall next to the garden, in spite of the 4 buttresses and support-foot-walling, was come down about xmas [Christmas] – Got home at 6 1/2 – Talked to my uncle and aunt 20 minutes – Dinner at 7 –
In the evening wrote all the above of today – Determined to see Messers James Briggs, Wiglesworth and Parker; the 1st thing in the morning – Fine cool day – Not much sun – Several times threatening rain but it held off except a few light drops about 3 p.m. – Barometer 1/8 degree below changeable and Fahrenheit 56º at 9 50/60 p.m., at which hour came up to bed –
Sent my letter (written yesterday to M– [Mariana] Lawton Hall about 8 1/2 this morning – Began my letter with the mention of the de Boyves – As [to] our disagreement, said Mrs. B– [Barlow] was the main spring, tho’ not the only one – Insinuated its being her jealousy of Mrs. B[arlow]. Said lady Ouseley had sent me a very civil message to say she would have called on me had she not been confined to her sofa (in a family way) –
Told M– [Mariana] I had seen the veterinary colonel in London and that near Paris – That the head professor of the latter had given me his pamphlet on the teeth of horses – Feared I had lost my books, and that purse sliders and a Fer de Berlin buckle sent me by Mrs. B– [Barlow] might have condemned the whole box –
Said I could have got M– [Mariana] a magnificent set of opals in Paris for about £40 – Opals called in India sulimanees, and, according to Mrs. Mackenzie, very valuable – (vide 13 October page 102)
Not a word of affection in the letter. Quite commonplace. All the world might see it, yet still 𝛑 [Mariana] could not fairly find fault – E [two dots, treating venereal complaint] O [one dot, marking discharge] –
[more]
Fer de Berlin (from French: “Berlin iron”) jewelry came into fashion during the early 1800's when the Prussians needed to finance the war against Napoleon.[x]

ANTIQUE, EXPRESSIVE BELT BUCKLE MADE OF BERLIN IRON, AROUND 1825 [x]

Selection of 19th century miser’s purses. These had metal sliders that held the contents in a closed section and released them for access via a central slit. [x]
