Confession time: Back in 2019 or 2020, I was on r/dankmemes or something and posted a hentai meme without giving the sauce (something commonly seen as a dick move). It was a screen shot of a quote from a rather obscure doujin too and no one ever got to find what the doujin was despite the dozens of comments begging for the sauce. Auditory and visual mediums have long histories of crossing into one another. Painters like Georgia O’Keefe and Marc Chagall have translated the experience of music onto canvas to great success. Musicians like Captain Beefheart and Kendrick Lamar have used visual mediums to structure their creative works. Audio and visuals cross pollenate within creative endeavors as well. Cowboy Bebop’s composer Yoko Kanno was inspired by and inspired other aspects of the show’s development.

In the past decade the two have found a new creative synthesis unique to the internet era: Web video. Web videos are largely the work of amateurs with affordable equipment and spare time. While many videos are original works with unique characters and narratives, an enormous part of internet creativity is derivative works. Everything from fanfiction, parody videos, reviews (hi), or c o n t e n t ™ is derived from a larger property with wider reach. The vast majority of these works rely on remixing something by taking it in new directions. In many ways these videos are an extension of childhood playtime, where the unlikely duo of Optimus Prime and Chun Li have to dethrone Skeletor and his green army men from the living room chair.

Among the remix heavy and low overhead environment of Youtube, editors built a goofy tradition of altering footage for humorous effect. These edits go by many names, but the style was pioneered in 2007 with the advent of the Youtube Poop. It’s an inherently silly genre that occasionally shows comedic brilliance, but demands solid editing and arrangement skills to succeed. One needs a commanding understanding of color, shot composition, timing, sound mixing, and humor to make a good edit. The resulting scene is dominated by the few who can find new humor in old material. Those who understand how and where to build their jokes go far, while the half-formed and underdeveloped ideas pollute space on the bottom of Youtube’s search results.

One important detail for their success is proficient editing and reincorporation. These creative processes apply to virtually all other mediums, including music. This leads us to the works of chris†††, an independent Vaporwave musician who smashes memes into semi-coherent collages with vaguely sinister origins. He demonstrates admirable competence in sound mixing and editing, but the resulting material reveals a weakness of the format. Many of these edits are a great moment to moment synthesis of otherwise disparate ideas, but the larger picture is a parade of unrelated ideas. This album fuses the top results of r/dankmemes into an endless tapestry of non-sequiturs. While two or three fusions can form a coherent idea, the gap between clips is too large to sew a larger narrative. You think segueing a nightcore’d remix of  リサフランク420 / 現代のコンピュー into Fantano’s review of the genre would make for a more compelling narrative, but it doesn’t go beyond musical slurry. It has the grammar of a song, but no larger point.

You could laugh at my desire to find meaning in dadaist art, but I feel there’s an ambition beyond simply mashing memes together. Somewhere in chris†††’s creative process is a great work about memes, meme culture those who perpetuate it. Perhaps it materializes on a later project. I enjoyed this album for what it was, but I feel it could become so much more.
