I had a job as a sort of butler who’d just bring stuff around to various rooms and put them on tables there.
Every room was a different D&D-type roleplay group, some for Earth, others for other worlds, and there were a lot for subsections, like for the specific parts of Earth wars was related to them, their environments, etc.
I was going to the American politics one often and overheard something like, “Well then, because someone decided there has to be four presidential impeachments, we’ll have to get rid of one.”
I watched as they whispered what that even meant and who it was about and then soon enough there was this Billboard of every US president, real, current, and possible future, with some faces being covered in static.
Jimmy Carter’s face also turned to static, and I felt the memory of him dripping away. Then I spent the next day wondering who the president between Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan was.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 🤍
you AND @youngpettyqueen both sent me this which 💜 this just means ten deranged self-recs because. deranged. i'd like to pretend this will be a diverse collection of recs, but. lmao.
1. None of Us are More Than Caretakers (The West Wing)
I wrote this whole story in about six weeks, and I loved every minute of it! About my only real complaint for season 7 of TWW is the transition stuff was so largely focused on the incoming administration, and I wanted to focus more on CJ and Danny (and the secret relationship!) and it overall turned into a little thing about legacy. And all because Gerald Ford happened to die during that time frame IRL! The alternative title is "what if I spent this whole fic setting up the events of Institutional Memory".
A snippet:
“Off the record?” Danny laughs, leaning back against the headboard. “How exactly would you expect me to quote you on this, CJ? The president’s chief of staff, while sitting in this reporter’s bed eating ice cream after sex, was quoted as saying…” CJ smiles too. “Force of habit.” “Sure.”
2. Don't Bet Your Future (M*A*S*H)
My most indulgent, most SILLY passion project. The combination of my love for M*A*S*H + Back to the Future = "Don't Bet Your Future". Essentially, it's a retelling of Back to the Future only BJ is Marty, Daniel is Doc, and... in 1955, Hawkeye is Daniel's son whom BJ has never heard of. This was the best thing I've ever written if only because it was so much fun. You should all write a fic based on your favourite movie, actually. 🥰🥺 (someday, sequels...)
Snippet:
And then a minute later, “What year is it?” BJ scoffs a little, turning on his side. He can just see the outline of Hawkeye in the dim of the room, a negative space with a warm voice, “Don’t laugh, I’m serious.” “It’s 1955.” “And who’s the president?” “Ronald Reagan,” BJ says grumpily. “Can I go back to sleep now, or are you gonna keep making me think about Ronald Regan?” “Is he a good president?” Hawkeye asks curiously. BJ thinks of AIDS and grimaces, his reply a little shorter than he means it to be. “No.”
3. What Unites Us (M*A*S*H)
One of my favourite gen fics I've written for MASH! Essentially, all of the letters sent back to the 4077 post-party. 🥰
4. Ties That Bind (Star Trek: TOS)
The Journey to Babel tag because Jim and Spock accidentally being linked by Amok Time and only finding out because Sarek lets it slip can be so personal (my first K/S day fic)
5. xenia (M*A*S*H)
The first time Peg meets Hawkeye, as seen through a classical lens (aka I wrote this one December while procrastinating studying for a classics final. Triad-ish, Peg's POV.

James Cagney, John Cassavetes, Edmond O'Brien, Rod Steiger, Richard Widmark, John Ireland, Tony Curtis, Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, Glenn Ford, William Holden, Van Johnson, Burt Lancaster, Ray Milland, Spencer Tracy and Robert Mitchum were considered for Dude But Montgomery Clift, who was a Liberal Democrat, turned down the role of Dude, because he didn't want to work with John Wayne and Walter Brennan, both strongly conservative Republicans, again. They had previously worked together at Red River (1948). Clift suggested his co-star in The Young Lions (1958) Dean Martin for the role of Dude, and so Martin's agent immediately approached Howard Hawks with the idea. He suggested … it's called "recommendation" in Italy. Ironically, Dean Martin, in later years, supported Ronald Regan, a conservative Republican.

If Ford didn't pardon Nixon and therefore won against Carter in '76. Do you see Regan winning in '80 after more than a decade of one party controlling the presidency?
It's difficult to say because I think it all would have depended on how well Ford's hypothetical 1977-1981 term played out. But if Ford had beat Carter in 1976, I think it would have created a really interesting matchup in 1980. Carter would have almost certainly been one-and-done as a national candidate if he had lost in '76, and I imagine Ted Kennedy would have been the obvious Democratic nominee in 1980 because he wouldn't have needed to challenge an incumbent President for the Democratic nomination. Ted Kennedy vs. Ronald Reagan in 1980 would have been a pretty remarkable election battle.

Jesus Christ. I think Biden has been a lot more successful than carter. But the parallels are staggering. A democrat coming into office after a Republican absolutely shook up and damaged the public perception of the presidency only to find themselves in an economic disaster. Like sometimes it’s easy to forget that only a single term separated the Nixon/Ford term and Regans first term. After what happened with the republicans it would be staggering to think they could be re-elected so quickly. And I think the same goes for right now.

electric cars
I don't know not who they talk to but it sure is not a true Montanan.
Montana welscomes electric cars, but the state isn't ready for longug 29, 2022UpdSted Sep 2, 2022
Tumblr media
Justin Lindh plugs in his Tesla Model 3 at one of the four new EV chargers at the Second Avenue North parking garage in downtown Billings in May 2021.
Tom Lutey
There was some buzz about Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative having an electric vehicle in its motor pool. Even in the utility world “EVs” are still pretty rare in Montana.
The co-op's vehicle is even kind of sexy. It’s a Ford Mustang Mach-E, the fastest versions of the vehicle can do 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, the most economy-minded versions can travel up to 300 miles on a single charge in favorable conditions.
“The one we have, our state association is always like ‘Let’s bring it to Great Falls, drive it to Great Falls next time we have a meeting,’” said Brandon Wittman, Yellowstone Valley Electric’s CEO. “And I’m like ‘I can’t make it’ and they want to know what I’m talking about.”
What Wittman is talking about is the 219-mile route between Billings and Great Falls on Montana Highway 3, which has no charging stations for electric vehicles, same for U.S. Highway 87 though Lewistown. Either way, an unexpected charge at a regular outlet would ground the speedy EV for several hours. A one-hour charge at a regular outlet, known as a level 1 charge, is good for about three miles, according to Ford. A level 2 charge is about four times as fast as a regular outlet, though it would still take up to five hours for a charge adequate for a 124-mile trip, according to Charge Hub. A rapid, level 3 charge cuts that 124-mile charge to 30 minutes or less.
Simply put, there are hundreds of miles across Montana where accommodations for electric vehicles are sparser than cell phone service. The challenge of finding an easy charge isn’t just a backroad dilemma. There are 211 miles of interstate between Great Falls and Milk River, Alberta without a charge, for example. There isn’t a charger to be found on 463 miles of U.S. Highway 2 between Browning and Williston, ND.
Charge it
The State of Montana has requested $43 million from the federal government to fill some of the gaps. The 2021 bipartisan Infrastructure Act called for states to make long-distance travel by electric vehicle easier. The thinking is that electric vehicles produce less carbon dioxide than combustion engines and that electricity generation will become cleaner over the next 27 years. Congress stirred the pot again in August by including $7,500 tax credits for electric vehicle buyers, $4,000 for used electric vehicles, in the Inflation Reduction Act.
EPA Administrator Michael Regan in a recent press call pointed to the tax credit as a game changer, something readily available to consumers for cutting carbon emissions. The Inflation bill spends $369 billion by way of tax credits and subsidies on clean energy and lower prescription drug costs for seniors using Medicare. The law also cuts the federal deficit by $300 billion through higher taxes on large corporations and wealthy individuals, according to Moody’s Analytics. This is a controversial law passed without Republican support.
“We will see some impacts immediately,” Regan said. “The tax credits for new electric vehicles, once the president signed the dotted line, that tax credit was made available for new vehicles all across the country. It will be similar to what happened when the president signed the bipartisan infrastructure law. You know, within a matter of weeks or a month, EPA hit the ground delivering results immediately from that legislation. We know how to do this, we are prepared to do it.”
The state expects a transition that will play out over several years. Montana’s plan is to fill in some charging station gaps as its first step, assuring that there is a quick charge on the major interstates at least every 100 miles, which means construction in the first year with Interstates 15 and 94 getting some attention. The state submitted at the end of July its proposal to the federal Department of Transportation for appspaceplay / pause qunload | stop fr / faster
Lloyd, energy bureau chief for the Department of Environmental Quality, said the state will keep its ear to the track for news of private investors in charging stations. Companies like Tesla, which installed its own network of fast chargers on U.S. Interstate 90 several years ago, would change the charging landscape if it made its chargers available for cars its didn’t manufacture. Tesla recently made its charging stations in Europe universaElectrify America, which is building universal charging stations across the country, is another company eyeing Montana for investment, Lloyd said.
Less than 2,000 EVs in state
In its electric vehicle infrastructure deployment plan, the state identifies 1,893 fully electric vehicles registered in Montana at the start of the year, with another 1,002 plug-in electric hybrid vehicles. The website Atlas EV Hub, shows that electric vehicles manufactured by U.S. automakers account for the second biggest percentage of registered electric vehicles in Montana. The single largest carmaker represented is Tesla, though its share is less than half. The state expects the number of electric vehicles registered in Montana to reach 31,350 by 2030 and nearly 88,000 10 years after that.
The big EV counties in Montana are Flathead, Missoula and Gallatin, each with rapid growth and inbound migration, according to the state.
The assumption, Lloyd said, is that most of these Montana EVs are traveling distances of a few miles from home, which is what most Montanans do no matter what they drive.
“I would say that over 80% of charging is done at home. Very few people drive more than the range of a typical EV in a day. But, beyond that, the infrastructure in Montana is still in its infancy,” Lloyd said. “So, corridors are being established, where folks can drive longer distances in electric vehicles. That's primarily centered around our interstates right now. But increasingly, there's charging options off of our main corridors. For example, the city of Red Lodge has a level-two charger that they've been operating for a couple years now. It's getting better as more infrastructure is put in the ground, and as battery technologies improve increasing range.”
DEQ gets involved in charging station planning by way of the 2016 settlement of a lawsuit against Volkswagen for violating the Clean Air Act. VW emission controls on diesel autos were giving false readings, indicating the cars were both fuel efficient and clean running. That settlement, of which Montana’s share was $12.6 million, resulted in electric vehicle charging stations installed across Montana, including Billings. About 15% of the money went to charging stations in the state. The lessons learned from the VW work are applied in the broader charging station plan playing out currently.
The Department of Transportation estimates that most of the electric vehicles on Montana’s highways will be from out of state, primarily from Washington. All told, roughly 100,000 out-of-state EVs are expected to travel Montana roads in the next five years. Electricity consumption by electric vehicles is expected to be 61 gigawatt hours under standard conditions by 2030, or 88 gigawatt hours in cold weather. That power consumption is a modest amount considering that Montana’s electricity sales in 2019 were 14,585 gigawatt hours. Lloyd said most of that charging will be done by Montanans at home.
The bigger challenge might be adequate infrastructure to handle fast charging stations at some locations. Yellowstone Valley Electric’s Wittmann said both state and federal officials speaking to the cooperatives wanted fast charging stations, more than one per location. The demand at one site with four vehicles charging at the same time, could be too much for some locations, selected more by distance between chargers than infrastructure.
“Four stations like that would be very energy intensive, think about 30 kilowatts for 90 straight minutes, it’s like turning on an irrigation pump,” Wittman said. That kind of demand typically comes with an extra cost to the customer. “Some companies, maybe a delivery company, if they’re going to plug in a half dozen of these at night at one location, that’s a significant upgrade to the electrical service for that building.”
Electric Cooperatives and Montana utilities informed the state of 10 sites along main travel-ways where infrastructure for charging stations was constrained. Six of those sites were on the Montana Hi-Line where there aren’t enough stations to traverse the state east to west. In towns like Gildford, Hinsdale and Essex, a 600-kilowatt charging station would overload substations at system peak. The effect of the new federal tax credit for electric vehicles remains to be seen, though Lloyd expects the impacts will be minimal at first. Cars that qualify for the tax credit have batteries with at least 50% of their materials sourced in North America. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the tax credit would be used for 11,000 electric vehicle purchases in 2023, but would jump to 60,000 the following year. Consider that U.S. vehicle sales in 2021 were roughly 15 million, according to the National Auto Dealers Association. The tax credit expires in 2032.

So much For Stardust Chapter Six.
No content warnings. Just Filler. I wrote this in a day. The next chapter is gonna be spicy. Not porn spicy, just drama spicy. But this fic is for mature audiences, so expect a sex scene or two in this fic (but like a tv sex scene where it’s screened over. Not those passionate porno sex scenes on AO3. Also, none of those are in this chapter.)
I got in the car and sat down in the front seat, panting from exhaustion.
“You know what Kenz needs?”
“I don’t need any—“
Loona burst out laughing before I could finish that statement. “You totally look like you could use a Starbucks.”
“Believe me. I don’t. Caffeine would just make me pass out.”
“Exactly.” Ford smiled, turning into the Starbucks parking lot. “And when’s the last time you’ve actually eaten?”
“There’s food at home.” But Wendy and Loona were chanting “Starbucks! Starbucks!” at the top of their lungs and punching the roof of Ford’s car, causing him to snicker as he turned into the drive through.
“I guess I’m outvoted.”
“Trust me, Kenz. You don’t want Ford to start cooking.”
“I can cook just fine, Wendy.” Ford retorted, but was cut off by Loona laughing out loud. “You burnt the water once trying to make toast.”
“SHUT UP!!!”
“How does one bloody burn the water after making toast?” I remembered when Gran told the story of when my mother almost burned down the house making toast. “At least you don’t get hair in the pancakes like Stan or glitter in the coffee like Mabel.”
“That’s not glitter she puts in the coffee, Kenz.” Loona chuckled as if she couldn’t believe how naive I am. “It’s not? But it’s so sparkly.”
“It’s smile dip.”
“What’s that?” This made Loona laugh harder, to which Ford had to explain. “Back in the 70’s, laws about candy were looser about what could be put in it. Smile dip contains a mild hallucinogen. It was banned with Regan’s whole ‘War on Drugs’ in the 80’s, but the locals of Gravity Falls are such hippies with drugs that it stayed around in convenience stores. Whatever you do, don’t snort it.” He pulled up to the speaker in the drive through. On the speaker was a bunch of crashing and a few chickens clucking. “What the fuck?”
“It’s just normal Gravity Falls Weirdness.”
“What do you mean?” Wendy burst out laughing. “Kenz, you have no idea what you’re about to be getting into by staying into this town.”
“And by the way. That clucking noise? That’s not a chicken. That’s the local cockatrice.”
“Should we go in there and make sure the employees aren’t turned to stone or set on fire?”
“I think they deal with this shit all the time.” Loona pulled up the Starbucks app on her phone and started putting in an order. “What do you want, Kenz?”
“I uh…” Just as I was about to say “I shouldn’t,” my stomach snarled with the intensity of a pack of wolves and my mouth was parched like the Sahara desert. “I’ll take a Trenta Strawberry assayee (Side note: I know it’s açaí, but I can’t pronounce it like that because I never quite learned to and it’s funnier to pronounce it assayee. Whenever Kenz mispronounces things, whether by accident or on purpose, I spell it how it’s pronounced because you can’t really show how a character pronounces something in fanfiction or written media like you can in scripted media like film and animation. By the way, if one of you idiots manage to animate this, Kenz’s voice is a bad moonkitti (the warrior cats YouTuber) impression done by me. However, their singing voice should they ever sing is my normal singing voice. Okay bye.) and a double smoked bacon cheddar and egg and… ooh… maybe a brownie—“
“You’re getting a brownie. There’s no maybe in this.”
“Says who?” Loona burst out laughing again. “Says me. Now don’t say you’re gaining weight because god knows that you were in a coma for five weeks and you barely ate shit!!! You tend to lose weight really quickly because you were 150 pounds before the coma and are now about 90. Billion fucked with your metabolism—“
“How the fuck do you know this?” To which Ford interjected, “It’s not rocket science. That much weight loss can be fatal. I don’t know how Bill managed to restore your ability to walk. He’s known to manipulate the biology of his victims. I think the way those wound appeared was that he—“
“Booo!!! I didn’t ask to go to school today!!!”
“Nerd!!!” Wendy and Loona flipped off Ford as I glared daggers at them. “I find Ford’s description of how I almost died very vital for my future survival aspect and somehow very interesting, thank you very much.”
“TP!!!!”
“That’s not the first time I’ve been called that, Loona.” I flipped her off back as Ford almost had to stop the car laughing so hard.
“Kenz, you need to learn to live a little. Like have you ever snuck out?” Wendy was very adamant about this.
“Uh… No?”
“Have you ever dated or made out with someone your parents didn’t like just because it made your parent mad?”
“Does kissing a boy in first grade but not with tongue on the lips count?” Loona and Wendy exchanged amused glances. “Lame.”
“Wait, you’re still a virgin?” Loona started to laugh. “How can someone who’s the senior football star’s firstborn child not have even been to a party with drugs in it?”
“Does alcohol and cigarettes count?” Even Ford couldn’t believe how dense I was being, considering how he had to hold himself still trying to get the drinks and food from the drive thru window. “Even I have been to a party with drugs. Quite a few parties with drugs.”
“Multiversal parties don’t count—“
“I was dragged along to those parties by Stanley when we were in high school.”
“And they let you two in?” Loona scoffed, to which Ford replied with a nod. “Stanley knew how to supply the drugs. Most people used him for his ADHD.”
“Okay. That’s sad.”
“Not as sad as having to spend your high school years in an independent study program during and after a global pandemic and not being able to party outside of family barbecues.”
I opened my mouth to reply, but instead took a bite of my sandwich and a sip of my drink. “Touché.” I finished the sandwich swiftly and moved onto the brownie.
“If even Ford has been to a high school rager, then you, my friend, need to get out.” Loona booped my nose. “By the way, your face is covered in chocolate.”
I licked the chocolate off my face. “Was saving that for later.” Loona burst out laughing as Wendy patted my head. “You know what? I like you. You would have fit right in with the band and theatre kids, yet not in an annoying way. Like, how should I put this, Loona?”
“Like those weirdly hot kids—“
“Excuse me?” I hid into my shirt and blushed. “Take it as a complement.” Loona laughed.
“Oh dear.” Ford sighed, reaching to bat my back, but then retracted his hand as he remembered that I was touch aversive.
“You know what Kenz needs Ford?” Wendy took a sip of her iced caramel macchiato. “Kenz needs to go out. Let loose. Be with other young adults that actually do things instead of rot and play Pokémon.”
Ford paused for a moment. “Kenz needs a bad influence. I doubt they’ve ever done a shitty decision in their life.” Loona was practically screaming in agreement.
“I don’t need a bad influence. Bills been a bad enough influence on me, thank you very much. And I just go into town—“
“You’re coming to this party whether you like it or not, Kenz.”
“And Grandpa Ford isn’t going. He’s a lame drunk and an even lamer stoner.”
“I can’t argue with that, according to kids these days standards. Just don’t drag my grandneice and nephew into your shenanigans. They’ve made enough bad decisions.”
“I’ve made bad decisions. I got into a psych ward on my eighteenth birthday. That’s practically prison.”
“That’s just sad.” Loona started texting on her phone. “Ford?”
“Im gonna agree on the girls with this one. That is really sad. Also, you were kinda voluntarily admitted for a plan—“
“Why do they even want to hang out with me if I’m so lame anyways? I thought I was too nerdy with all my weird bug facts and emotional baggage…”
Loona and Wendy burst out laughing. “Kenz, you don’t know it, but you’re the opposite of lame.”
“You don’t know me. I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I can barely handle caffeine without taking a nap. And also, I can’t drive because my ADHD is just… That way. So I can’t be a designated driver.”
“But you’re hilarious.”
“No I’m not. Im grumpy and grouchy and… and… Darkness. Darkness danger and death. We literally just met. You don’t know what I’m like. Any of you.”
“Maybe we don’t. Maybe we just wanna get to know you better. To get to know you besides the shitty hand you were dealt. And by the way, you can listen to Emo music all you want, but you’ll never truly be a hardcore Emo kid. I’ve seen you around animals. You talk to them like they’re your friends. It will never not be adorable.”
“Wendy, I’m not—“
“Kenz, look. That kid has a lab!”
“What? Labbydor? Where? Where pupper?!” The car burst out laughing as I grumbled. “Ha ha. It says gullible on the ceiling and I dropped my pocket and shit.”
“At least you’re honest.” Loona smiled. “You guys don’t think it’s creepy when I talk to snakes like they’re dogs, or when I catch a weevil and let it crawl on my arm for hours shouting ‘WEEVIL TIME’ at the top of my lungs?”
“You make it hilarious. That’s part of your charm.”
“Someone has to be able to handle spiders and creepy crawlies.” Loona started to speak in an Australian accent. “You’re like Steve Irwin, mate.”
“I’ve seen your art on tumblr and your tiktoks. They’re hilarious. And you’re an excellent drawer. Also, props to you for putting AI in its place.” Wendy smiled and put her phone down.
Ford pulled up at the shack as I sat down on the couch. “What are you doing?”
“Getting ready to go to sleep.” Loona shook her head and lifted me up. “Come on!!! I’m exhausted!! The party’s tomorrow!!!”
“Slumber party!!!”
“Loona, be careful using that word around here. Because if Mabel hears you have a slumber party with Kenz, then Candy and Grenda are gonna be milleseconds away. And that will be too much intensity for them to take.”
“Why don’t we drag them to your place? They don’t even have a room here, yet.” Loona carried me fireman style to Wendy’s house. “We’re doing this? We’re seriously doing this?”
