until i recently read posts on here about how there is an inherent queerness to the doctor and rose's relationship in how it's unspoken and filled with yearning that i'd never really considered that element, despite knowing for ages that RTD is gay but. man. it's just reframed a lot of the series for me, like the idea that you have this lonely man who's just watched his people die and is self-destructive and misanthropic and traumatised and he can love again and he wants to but it has so many risks.
but especially S3 and how it adds even more weight to the doctor's grieving widower status. how he tells martha that he and rose were together but martha refers to rose as a friend to tallulah; the fact that he can only say they were together once she is gone; how the only other person that both can feel how he feels but also understands the depth of his feelings is jack, a queer man himself. and I've been thinking to myself lately oh, it's ok, the doctor and rose probably accidentally got married on at least one planet or something but also the point is that there was no official title that could convey to people the extent that they meant to each other, that the doctor can really only tell donna that rose was his friend even though it is so wholly inadequate and she comes to see that by the end of the episode (and martha too of course). how people who saw the doctor and rose together assumed they were a couple, like on krop tor, but once there's no more physical evidence of the relationship it becomes more vague (and simultaneously clearer).
anyway something about how christopher eccleston said he based his portrayal of nine on RTD and something about RTD saying that his husband is "in every good man i write now" and how the doctor and ruby seeing each other in the club mimics his first meeting with his husband aka the one moment he would use a time machine to go back to hmmm

thinking about chris eccleston saying how he hated s1 production and rtd in particular for the way he handled (or more correctly NOT handled) the situation with racism towards mickey, with the lack of support for actors etc etc, man just doesn't hold back.

It's okay to admit Martha was mistreated. It's okay to admit the comments Ten made about her hurt her feelings. It's okay to admit Martha went through traumatic shit. Yeah, the "Martha should get to fuck the Doctor too!" Stans don't really sound like they care about her character like that by making it sound like S3 and RTD's worst and only offence, plus I've already gave them a little whack in previous posts. But this doesn't mean Martha was completely fine either. This is just misogynoir in a different font. Yh she became strong, but this was out of survival and maintaining her wellbeing. She was upset by John and Joan. She cried on the Valiant. She cried at a dying Hath. She's not invincible. Martha's main trait isn't just how well she copes with trauma and mistreatment and that shouldn't be her best or most likeable trait either. Its not sitting right w/ me how "Martha's deserves something" is considered going against her character. In a sci-fi show where anything can and does happen Martha is the exception. I'm not saying she needs a Ten clone, or to look into the Time Vortex or grab her own TARDIS. Deserving more to be compared to your predecessor and prove you're worth being a full time companion... as a full time companion is the bare minimum. She deserves to deserve things.

The One Who Waits: what if its Death?
Death is what waits for everyone. She's inescapable. She's inevitable. It makes sense the Toymaker, a creature of eternal play, would stay away from the embodiment of Ending.
Not to mention rtd is clearly still going with exploring the Doctor's past and Death is tied to at least one version of the Doctor's origin
Between the duo in Can You Hear Me, Time in Flux, and the Toymaker in The Giggle, the show has been inching back towards eternals and godlike creatures.
Wouldn't it be cool if Death was next?

fans of nuwho who act like their favorite showrunner can never do wrong and one of the other showrunners is pure evil please remember that all three of them have had great moments and huge mistakes. yes even that one (whoever you don’t like) has made something good

okay so if the master lost a game to the toymaker (like rallon and millennia) and got gold toothified, could we be talking like…. a version of the master from their distant past?? from the academy era - before the war lord, before roger delgado, before anthony ainley, long before the time war??? just a good old vanilla koschei, freshly renegading??

this post has been edited <3
original post:
i think what rtd was trying to say with that comment was that he didn’t want to make it seem that they were mocking queerness or genderqueerness. like how historically cis men wearing womens clothing has been presented on television as something funny and a joke.
however ? then ok put effort into not making it a joke. don’t have the doctor make a comment about how they’re women’s clothes and dont have anyone he comes across be weird about it either. treat it as normal or have him change into something more comfortable first thing. don’t have clothes be suddenly included in regeneration for the first time just bc the previous doctor was a woman
edit:
after seeing other people’s comments, I still agree with my first paragraph but no longer feel the same about the second
1. rtd was clearly saying that cishet men in women’s clothing can be turned into and taken as mockery no matter the original intent. that’s very different from saying it is a mockery.
“…the only photo they’d print would be David in what they consider to be women’s clothes. Then it becomes weaponised - as a mockery of feminine traits, a mockery of drag, of that culture. So that was never going to happen.”
2. many of the examples of david tennant in women’s clothing that I’ve seen people post in response ARE mockery. “Davina” was mockery. Just because you might see value in or connect to that character does not erase that it was mockery.
3. rtd has just cast a young black trans actress. i can absolutely understand him wanting to give the press the least amount of ammunition possible because she will inevitably get backlash and he would rather spend his energy protecting an actual young trans woman than fending off transphobic remarks about a cis man wearing “women’s clothing”
4. sacha dhawan is not david tennant and the media attention they receive is nowhere near equal.
5. rtd would not be able to do any of the things I suggested in my original post for a full year. there would be a full year where all the media would have would be thirty seconds of david tennant in “women’s clothes” and no dialogue/character interactions/etc to solidify it as not a joke.
again, you can disagree with his decision!!!! I myself would not have made the same choice in his position!!! but the people accusing him of violent trans-misogyny over this are completely misunderstanding what he said need to remind themselves that there is not a “good choice” and a “evil vile horrible choice”. there are just two choices with their own pros and cons and he made a decision based on what he believed would cause the least amount of harm

i know i haven't really shut up about this since october, but i've just discovered yet another reason to be Furious with rtd for the clothes thing
because we all know how jodie and ray collaborated on the outfit that would be gender neutral and all that, right? BUT what they also did with it was pack it full of symbolism - the whole sky, universe, suffragette-coloured lining, rainbows, the whole INCLUSIVITY thing
and there comes russell and strips all of this away, none of that is left, because - obviously - he can't have any tennant doctor wear anything other than a basic ass suit
how innovative. how respectful. what a fucking saviour.

Thasmin & How the Changing of Showrunners Handicapped Their Story
You know what? I'm going to rant about it. I've been thinking about Doctor Who from a Watsonian versus Doylist point of view on a constant basis, especially when it comes to showrunners and how the doctor is handed over from showrunner to showrunner and how the exit of Yaz from the show is it possibly the clearest example in the world of this feeling of a showrunner being switched. I'm not talking writing differences, I'm not talking stylistic differences, I'm talking the way that she left the show. Because I would put all of my life savings on the fact that if Thirteen and fourteen had the same show runner, Yaz would have been able to stay around for 13's regeneration. You can feel the writing of the show STRAINING to justify why Thirteen would dump her/leave her behind. It feels abrupt because it IS. Rose got to continue her story with 10 until its organic end. Same with Clara. Hell, even River, though her circumstances were slightly different. There is literally no reason why Fourteen wouldn't go after her the moment the 60th specials end except for the fact that for some absolutely weird reason RTD didn't mention Yaz ONCE despite 14 being more "emotionally open" than the Doctors before him.
Like, I'm going to be honest. I'm mostly ambivalent on Thasmin. I think they're sweet and had potential and got screwed in the build up in seasons 11 and 12 (up until Revolution, even). But if I was y'all I would be PISSED. Because that kind of treatment of Yaz and Thasmin as a love story sucked from both the Power of the Doctor AND the 60th anniversary specials. No closure. No real explanation. No acknowledgement of the main love story of the last showrunner. (Even Steven Moffat name-dropped Bad Wolf/Rose in the 50th special, though he did also have the whole 10th Doctor running around with Elizabeth I thing so maybe that cancels itself out.) The mechanics of the show and how it's run screwed you over. And I'm sorry. I hope y'all get some acknowledgement in 15's Era. I'll be pleasantly and happily surprised if we get a cameo (or some miraculous wrap-up of the storyline ala Husbands of River Song), but seeing how the most logical place for a mention (the toymaker) came and went without a peep I'm not hedging my bets.
(Going to go check out some fanfic, though- and imagine that fourteen took off towards Sheffield the moment the 60th anniversary wrapped!)
