I am grateful for my injury.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ A year ago, I would have never imagined I’d say that. It’s certainly easier now, on the other side, to see beyond the struggle and heartache, to appreciate the lessons.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ When I surprised myself with a 9-minute half-marathon PR in the spring of 2018, I became intoxicated by the idea of getting faster. I believed I had all this speed I’d never tapped into before, and if I just worked at it, I could run a BQ. So I jumped right into an aggressive training plan filled with speed work, goal-pace runs and many more weekly miles than I’d ever run before. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I did get faster—but I was stacking block upon block to build a soaring tower with a nonexistent foundation. It’s no wonder it eventually came crashing down.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It took me a while to recognize that my injury was of my own making. And then I realized I could do it all differently and create a better outcome.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’ve spent the last year slowly moving cinder blocks into place. There’s one for strength. There’s another for stability. Another for form. And, to fill in the gaps between those: plenty of patience. Determination. Persistence. Belief.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’ve built my foundation. Every step of this marathon, I’ll run on that foundation. I have every reason to believe it will get me to the finish line feeling healthy and happy.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ And then? I’ll look forward to my next goal and start stacking my blocks: a speed workout here, a few more miles there. But not too many. Not too fast. I don’t remember that last time I was injured. (*knock on wood) Aside from practicing good running form and improving my mobility with @pineapple.yogi , arming myself with a solid rotation of running shoes that actually fit, promotes a natural gait, supports me training for marathons, and allows me to recover - both while running and NOT running is equally important. And that’s exactly what my special guest and shoe expert, @calla_murphy of @jackrabbit_original and I covered in latest Zoom Coaching Call with my Virtual Fall Marathon Training Group. So if you’re training for an upcoming Fall marathon, make sure you: 1. Complete a gait analysis. 2. Have an expert determine if your feet pronate. 3. Get your feet measured - both size and width. 4. Get enough stack height to support you and your runs. 5. Strive for a low heel drop to promote a natural gait. 6. The right shoe should have enough structure to hold your feet in place. 7. Don’t wear cotton socks because it causes blisters. Buy new socks as often as you buy new shoes. 8. Use an app like @strava to track how many miles you have put into your shoes. 9. Buy a pair of recovery shoes or sandals for when you’re not running. Calla, if I’m missing anything please add! Stoner Sammy... Look at those eyes 👀, so glassy, stoned out of his mind. He had to go under anesthesia today so a surgeon could check his right back leg plus they took 5 x-rays. We will get the report back in a couple of days. They think it’s a possible tear. We are hoping and praying that it’s nothing serious. We think it happened when he was playing with his little sister, he taught how to ankle bite, now she brings him down all the time, all 20 pounds of her to his 88 pounds. Plus he’s going on a diet, he needs to lose around 10 pounds. Today I ran another test run to see whether the injured hip would last. The idea was to go for about 5 km run (pick up a Facebook marketplace purchase for Elmo and come back) but the run felt good and I went a bit longer. The heart rate was high but I was afraid to let the cadence down. It felt so good! My spirit was HIGH, high, high! So awesome! Did it hurt? Not really. Now waiting for tomorrow and how it will feel then. I have been doing physiotherapy exercises for my hamstring-butt-hip problems for about 2 months now (thank you @fysimosimo 💪🏻👌🏻) and in addition core training. It seems that it is slowly doing its job and working. BTW My Southern Ostrobothnian heart loved the flat scenery. No matter where, it just calms me down. ❤ Don’t you simply love my new autumn-colored running jacket?
