Watched a documentary about the (now legendary) football games between the national teams of russia and Ukraine in 1998 and 1999. The sheer levels of imperialistic fascism the russians were displaying leading up to those games is just typical. And yes, both those games took place before putin came to power, russians have just always been like that.
Patches and pins "russian invasion of Ukraine 1998" were popular among the russian fans leading up to the first game in Kyiv:
Tumblr media
The rhetoric in the russian media about Ukraine not really being a separate country intensified.
For the record, russia lost that game 3:2.
But all of this is nothing compared to the second game, in Moscow in 1999. Russia needed only to win in order to move on in the tournament. Ukraine could settle with a draw. And that is when the true madness unfolded.
Probably the best known episode was this headline in one of the biggest sports newspapers in russia:
Tumblr media
You see, they had a player with the last name "Khokhlov". So, on the surface level, the headline says, "Kick, Khokhlov, save Russia!" However, if you read out the headline, it also says "Kick [slur word for Ukrainians], save russia!". The slogan is a paraphrase of one of the main slogans of the russian Black Hundreds (ultra-reactionary, ultra-nationalist pogromist monarchist movement in the russian empire in early 20th century), only in the original versions there was the slur for Jews there instead. The russians were very proud of that pun. It was everywhere at the time.
Vladimir Putin, who was the russian prime minister at the time, was present at the game. The way the russian commentators already went out of their way to keep singing his praises for no reason is a good indicator how russians tend to make a cult of personality around everyone who happens to be a figure of authority.
And then the game finished with a draw 1:1 after an unbeliavable goal by Andriy Shevchenko (and due to a mistake from russia's goalkeeper):
youtube
Putin got really upset. He stopped showing up at such sporting events for years after this.
The bus with the Ukrainian national team got attacked on its way to the stadium before the game (according to Shevchenko, russians threw bottles at it) and especially after the game (with all sorts of objects being thrown at it, from beer bottles to rocks).
Absolutely typical. And one of the clearest views of ruscism.

People be like "Russia is not imperialistic"🤡 - and then the most famous Ukrainian chef cannot open a restaurant of the most famous Ukrainian cultural food in Japan, because Japanese widely consider borscht a Russian dish and so would avoid the restaurant thinking it to be Russian🫤🫤🫤🤯🤯🤯

Aaaaand there come the anons accusing me of racism because I support Ukraine...
For example:
Tumblr media
I literally mentioned Crimean Tatars in my previous post. They are very much not white and not Christian. I guess unless you think Crimea isn't Ukraine, which something tells me is exactly what this anon would believe.
It's also an antisemitism issue and pointing that out isn't the same as me supporting Zionism (which is what another anon accused me of).
It's an imperialism issue as well (which isn't only bad when it's done by America and you should start to fucking listen to Eastern Europeans who have suffered under Russian/Soviet occupation for at least the least century, if you are about anti-imperialism).
It's also a food crisis issue if Russia decides to end the grain export deal, because guess what parts of the world depend the most on Ukrainian grain?!
Jesus, imagine thinking you're putting yourself on an anti-racist high horse by supporting Russia which uses their ethnic minorities as cannon fodder for Moscow's genocidal imperial dreams.

War of August in photos
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Info: today, on August 7 marks 14 years since Russia started war with Georgia
On August 7 of 2008, Russian tanks moved towards Georgian borders. As a preemptive act, on August 8, then Georgian president Saakashvili opened fire to block Roki tunnel, the main way through which Russians were able to cross the border. Since then, Russia has claimed that war started on August 8 and not 7 which discredits Georgia's right to defend itself.
On August 9 of 2008, Russia bombed one of the biggest Georgian cities - Gori, devastating the area and killing innocent civilians (the photos are from Gori)
Russia took some Georgian villages during that war, which are still occupied to this day.

Historically, some of the biggest Russian opponents to domestic repressions are imperialists. Solzhenitsyn, most famously, is, on the one hand, bravely fighting the GULAG, and on the other hand - a vile imperialist with a sense of fascism. These aren't new phenomena, in many ways. Somehow one feels that [moving away from imperialism] is unlikely in Russia, because it goes so deep. This is just the latest Russian invasion of Ukraine, this is not just one war, this has been going on for centuries. Russian imperialism is embedded in Russian humour, Russian literature, codes of thinking. It's not about statements. It's not just about policies. When Pushkin writes, I don't know, "Кавказ подо мною" ("The Caucasus lies below me"), one of his famous poems... the amount of imperialist psychology that goes into saying that - that goes very, very deep. So until those much, much deeper sort of deep cultural roots of Russian imperialism, racism and oppression are addressed, nothing is changed. So let's think what we have agency over, in a way. [...] we can change the way Russia is perceived globally and in the West. Because this idea that Russia is a great power that has the right to a sphere of influence and that has the right to suppress others because it's great - that sits very deep in people's heads across the world. We can start working on that. So why don't we start working on that? Let's get people in my world - Britain, America - to re-read the Russian classics and understand how much imperialism and oppression of others there's there. Let's start de-mystifying this idea of "the Russian mystic soul" and really start rooting it to very specific histories of violence and oppression. Let's start changing the way Russia is perceived, so it's no longer seen as inevitable and so vast and huge that you have to drop on your knees in front of it, which still sits in people's heads. That means changing the way the universities overfocus on Russia studies and completely silence the voices of Ukrainians, Georgians, Kazakhs... There's so much we can do that will make people's perceptions of Russia rooted in reality. And they will help gain self-confidence to say, "Stop, we're not dependent on you".

Russia attacks Ukraine and occupies a sizeable part of its territory.
Iran is Russia's military ally and supplies drones and rockets Russia uses to attack Ukraine.
Ukraine is the US and EU's military ally.
Israel is the US and EU's military ally.
Iran launches war Israel with multiple rockets and drones.
But nooooooooooo we are not yet in WWIII, nonono - said all the ostriches with their heads in the sand.
(WWII was named WWII in 1945, after it ended)

now that I got your attention with the cute Leopard emojis....
here’s a reminder that you should scream at your politicians to send heavy weapons to Ukraine (especially if you are German like me - go and shred Olaf to pieces!) and if you can then donate money to United24 and other Ukrainian charities. And for fuck’s sake, make sure the people around you are not looking away and forgetting. Too many people got used to things ~just being the way they are~ now. That’s unacceptable!!!
Russia is committing genocide right in front of our eyes and every day that we don’t give Ukraine what it needs to win this war is another day of Russian terror, rape and murder. Inaction equals collaboration with the fascist Russian regime. Doing nothing and postponing political decisions plays into the hands of Russia. And if you think I’m exaggerating then you are not educated enough on the issue and have to sit down and catch up on what you should have been doing for the past 11 months!

I dont know how much you people are interested in politics but Putin literally said what his plans were at 2007 Munich conference… like he declared that he wanted a new world order and literally in the video you can see how world leaders are baffled and agitated because that is a huge fuck you to the international community. Nothing is new under the sun.
So in 2007 Putin declared he wanted a new world order where Russia would be considered between world powers, in 2008 he invaded Georgia just to show how serious he was with his words, in 2011 Russia intervened in Syria, in 2014 Russia invaded Ukraine, in 2020 Russia let Armenia get crushed by Azerbaijan because Pashinian seemed too friendly to the west, in 2022 Russia invaded Ukraine again… (these are just biggest ones that i could remember but there are so much more)
How much clearer should a country declare its intensions? Should it actually write in red crayon like you all are kindergarten children?
Russia wants power and dominance and it is doing whatever's necessary to get them. Russia literally has never lied about its intentions, never had to because all of you lie to yourselves, you do Russia's job for itself. Good job, useful idiots!

every day i think about children deported from occupied territories to ru*sia. entire orphanages moving out, kids with parents, kids who just lost their parents. they will be subjugated to the worst propaganda that is out there. anything ukrainian will be stripped off them. they will be taught about great rus*ian saviors, insinuating favourite ru*sian narrative of ukrainians being inferior. i think about tens if not hundreds of thousands of these kids and i become physically sick. i sincerely hope they will not forget about their past lives and there will be a way out - back to ukraine.
