qsmp has accidentally stumbled into a psychology experiment that would make the stanford prison experiment sob in fear. they’ve gotten a bunch of cc’s, and tens of thousands of viewers, to be deeply emotionally connected to pixel eggs. in doing so they’ve presented a problem:
how the fuck do you get outta this
the eggs were obviously never intended to be permanent (logging on every day to do tasks isn’t feasible to upkeep forever) and they were even given a vague limit of When Mama Dragon Comes Back (and then, of course, the “6 days til they die” thing). now you’ve made it so quackity (and his team) have a big ol dilemma, where two things are true: 1) they can’t keep the eggs forever since it’s not sustainable 2) you can’t take away the eggs without, oopsies, emotionally damaging your friends that you invited to have fun on your server.
turns out, when you give a group of humans all their own fully-realized individual who presents as a (weak, vulnerable) child that is in need of care from them, whatever instinct has kept us alive for generations goes “!!!!!” which is both really cool and compassionate, but also kinda concerning!
because, well: not sustainable! and if the eggs aren’t sustainable, what’s the alternative? killing them?? no! just look at jaiden’s reaction to bobby “losing” a life, even when it wasn’t his last one. or bad’s genuinely heart wrenching reaction to dapper losing a life. or how quiet and angry phil got after chayanne and tallulah had a “nightmare,” before it was resolved. that’s not acting. that’s real. what the hell will they do if the eggs actually die? from what i see, the cc’s are taking the “6 days til death” thing as something that’s avoidable. a threat that can be overcome. and for their sake, i hope it is.
ever played a dnd game where you actually feel insulted bc of smth someone’s pc did? yeah. that x20 because there’s SO much overlap between “streamer persona” and “literally just who they are”. and this level of roleplay character bleeding is cool, but i hope the eggs are handled carefully, or all those involved might end up actually hurt.
there’s also the whole added element of fans, many of whom only tune into the streams for egg content. the plot is very egg-centric. the roleplaying and characterization that the cc’s are doing is all centered around the eggs in one way or another. it’s been going on for a month, but it does not feel at all resolved, and plot-wise it would completely mess up so many plot threads happening if the eggs were all to go (charlie’s unresolved deal with lil j, quackity’s goal to bond with tallulah, the trial, etc etc) so if you take away the eggs, you risk messing up the whole vibe they’ve got going on, and facing backlash from fans who are also emotionally compromised by pixel eggs
we inherently want to protect the cute and vulnerable, and by god are these eggs cute and so very fragile. (then, there’s another layer of people’s own issues that they project onto the eggs. be it desire for paternity, some kind of maternal instinct, or, even in the matter of chayanne, using chayanne as a sort of way to cope with loss by making connections between chayanne and technoblade. which is beautiful and very sweet but would give chayanne dying some additional emotionally charged elements which i think should be avoided at all costs). there’s a reason that movies and other media generally do not kill named children characters—audiences really hate it. it’s taboo for good reason.
which leads us to
schrodinger’s egg: until sunday, they r both alive and dead. and this is both good and bad. god help us all

As excited as I am about wilbur coming back to the server since lovejoy is on tour break, I'm also extremly dreading it because if the reunion with tallulah doesn't go positively he'll get absolutely no sympathy from the fandom and wilbur cannot promise to never go away again because he's not gonna abandon his music career for minecraft rp
And I don't want this to end with tallulah disowning him because that's clearly not what wilbur originally wanted to happen rp wise, man tried his best to make his character be a good dad, irl stuff got in the way of him coming back sooner and then tallulah got taken in lore
I also want him to be able to look around the server and get to know a few people since last time he was on there was heavy lore and obviously people were busy with that and he didn't really get to explore anything

i always loved the fact that Ghostbur became their own person
He always was treated as a memory, as leftovers, ashes of another person. Something to grieve about, someone to mourn. The person he knew as many things: a great and a terrible leader, a cold, evil or a caring and kind person. The memories of whom they held, yet they never were that person, never even knew them.
And when after going to limbo once he says that he no longer wants to go back to being Wilbur, that he doesn't want to die for Wilbur even though he believed people he loved needed that leader. For the first time he makes a decision for himself, to be himself even though it potentially can dissapoint his friends. He makes a decision not to sacrifice himself. He develops his own personality his own memories
i might be just crazy on the trope of clones/people that should've been a specific person creating their own life
and then Wilbur fucking Soot kills them

There are two types of Lovejoy fans:
The ones who'd be happy if Wilbur never streamed again and only did tours and music forever
And the ones that will in fact die of starvation the longer this stream drought goes on, they will not last the winter

i just finished q’s vod from yesterday and honestly? i feel vindicated in my belief that q’s attraction to wilbur is based more around his romanticisation of relationships (and his grief for tilín, silent but ever present) than love

hmmm thinking of,,, this g/t spin on a fic idea i had. might just stay a concept but... god AU c!tntduo with god of the moon g!wilbur and t!quackity who's fiances left him. very heartbroken very angry just speaking his woes to the night sky like he's been prone to.
and g!wilbur up there in the sky, having listened to every rant listening to this one with a dreamy sigh like "i could make him better".
Tommy (fellow god of the sun) would pop in with something like "if anything, you'd probably make each other worse." or "oh my gods Wil you're such a wierdo— just go talk to him already if you're gonna be like this again, you're holding up my fucking sunrise."
quackity was not expecting, the night after his broken engagement, for the god of the moon to show up outside his balcony over 50 feet tall to... ask him out? is that what's happening??? what the fuck do you mean you've been listening to me—
so. yeah there's a few issues, these guys have problems, but it'd probably be funny.
#dsmp g/t#mcyt g/t#dsmp gt#giant!wilbur#tiny!quackity#giant!tommy#this isn't my usual duo but i was kinda just... rotating it in my head#cquackity is such an interesting and messy guy. so is cwilbur. even with the changes of the au setting it's like. hmm rotating them faster#cquackity whose relationships always fall through. leaving him in the dust and hurting.#he gets mad he gets sad he clings to a semblance of control and doesn't even get that really#cwilbur 'psycho-competitive relationship' soot. and who when he loves someone or places his worth in something. something something.#it effects him greatly. he has to be right do things right be The Best. it sure hit hard when he wasn't#idk im probably off or not making sense. i'm no wilbur or quackity main.#that's not even mentioning whatever the fuck they have going on together because that's a whole other analysis#THE POINT IS. THIS AU CHANGES SOME OF THAT DYNAMIC. and it could be good or bad or sdklfjklsffgdfjls#is it some kinda prelude to a greek tragedy to have a giant god be your rebound? or is it a fucking hilarious sitcom with healing?#t!quackity flipping off fate for the shit hand dealt to him. with some form of g!found family#or t!quackity's life getting even worse after fucking it up with a god.#g!wilbur being Too Much and fumbling and scaring quackity off#or g!wilbur being absolutely elated bc he can finally talk to and hold the human of such a tragic life who he somehow is infatuated with#if anyone wants to be incomprehensible about this with me or add to it feel free to send asks if you want lol#idk why im tntduo posting. their allotted blorbo time ig :]

I dunno man, Tallulah struggling with Wilbur’s absence makes sense rp wise, but ,again, I can’t ignore the irl reasons for it. The fact that he’s away a lot is one of the reasons he’s not getting a pet irl despite wanting one and he was always vocal about the fact that he wasn’t always gonna be there, it’s not like he’s choosing to play the role of absent father. I have seen people compare this to c!fundy but in dsmp there were in lore reason for their relationship to become strained and in my opinion it’s not the same. I don’t normally struggle with angst at all, but lately I just can’t get behind this one ://

i’d love to hear abt that first modern au you mentioned (the Niki centric one)
link to where the au was mentioned here! going to say big content warning for suicide on this one because it is literally about c!wilbur's suicide in a modern au context
oh yeah that one is freaking tragic. okay so essentially the original l'manberg crew all lived near each other and were good friends in relative late teens-early twenties harmony (i imagined this fic being set in aust because of course i did... more on that later) and wilbur ends up working in electoral offices. unfortunately for as much as he loves politics, politics does not love him back - he has a lot of deep-seated issues with anxiety and paranoia which only exacerbate with the stress he takes on at work. after taking on some big new role he moves across the country with tommy, who manages to drag tubbo with them. niki and fundy make him promise to stay in touch and predictably he does not. the few times niki does manage to get a hold of him, he's evasive; when fundy yells at him over the phone, he does little to disparage the insults. the rest of so-called l'manberg moves apart.
and then wilbur dies.
it is extremely bad. the only friends or family to speak of that wilbur had in his new home were tommy and tubbo - tubbo is very barely keeping things together enough to sort out paperwork and funeral proceedings and the other grim administration that follows an unexpected death, and tommy is not keeping things together at all. the news rocks the far-flung members of their once-little family. wilbur had been distant, maybe down on himself - but no one expected him to kill himself. niki didn't. niki had just trusted that this was some adjustment period and he would be okay and wilbur would start replying to her texts again or maybe even move back and it would be okay. this wasn't supposed to be the end. the news absolutely wrecks her, and she can't tell how much of her is sad and how much of her is angry and how much of her is a fucked up combination of both - a seething mass of barely-held-back tears and shouting.
niki, who had moved back to their childhood city in the interim, books a flight across the state to go see tommy and tubbo for the funeral. she is alarmed and pissed off to run into phil and techno at the airport, on the very same flight as her - wilbur's dad and his uhh techno (dad's friend? brother-ish-person? acquaintance? no one could get a consistent story out of them). they're not super happy to run into her and her attitude either - wilbur had not been close with his family even while l'manberg operated as a unit, and niki had made her judgements of his family accordingly. in a very c!niki way. i.e. with stubborn vindictiveness. if wilbur was struggling so much that even she didn't realise the severity until it was too late, where was his family?
phil and techno, on the other side of the coin, had figured that wilbur's friends were nothing to be impressed with - especially given wilbur's apparent struggles with mental health that kind of blindsided them. where were his friends? i'm assuming they might have taken an incidental reputation hit in letters wilbur wrote to phil as he tried to stress that everything in his life was going Perfectly.
(niki blames phil and techno because the alternative means that she has to blame herself. she needs to lash out at something to survive! phil and techno blame wilbur's friends (not just niki, she's just the one who is standing there...) because the alternative means blaming themselves. they're all being a bit shitty and spewing these unfair takes on each other because no one can cope with the idea that it's their fault their friend/son died.)
anyway airport! they snip and bitch their way at each other through check-in until it happens that the flight is indefinitely delayed due to freak weather or something - but all three of them need to cross the country by like, early next week to make it to the funeral. they do not have time for flight delays.
so eyeing each other with suspicion - and knowing damn well they are going to the exact same place - they trundle over to the hire car service, and find a wagon available for them to hire right away.
the catch is (probably because niki is too young to hire a car on her own. sorry niki) they have to hitch a ride together.
(okay circling back to the australia setting thing! imagine niki, phil and techno living in sydney, and wilbur, tommy and tubbo moving to perth. driving from sydney to perth and vice versa is A Thing, although it's far less common now due to air fares becoming more accessible. y'know driving across the nullabor? it's like, that plus the little bit between adelaide and sydney. if you're gunning it (for example, if you have three drivers to tag-team between), you can make it from sydney to perth in 3 and a half days. now, you'd probably only want to go that fast for something really important, like if you were driving to a friend's funeral with his shitty family who you've decided that you hate.)
oh, also they find a kid in the parking lot who begs them to take him with them when they tell him that the flight was cancelled - he's in an absolute tizzy because his online friend has had something really bad happen, like really bad, and he impulsively bought a plane ticket because he needs to go see him now now now. they let ranboo in because they're so nice and also because techno peer pressures him into stealing them potato chips for the road or something idk
anyway! hence ensues three and a half days of bonding as niki, phil and techno are stuck in a car with nothing but each other and their grief (and ranboo). they talk about wilbur. they realise there are things one of them knew about wilbur that the others didn't. they watch stars stream past as they constantly drive and the sunrise spill over the sand when they pause at a rest stop to get more food and water. they share different parts of wilbur's life that they were each there for - phil has the baby stories, but niki has every stupid anecdote from uni. they bond with each other independent of wilbur. niki and techno talk about baking and try to kick each other in the sand when they stop to stretch their legs. ranboo sees a kangaroo for the first time (how?). phil reveals the absolute blowout fight he and wilbur had shortly before wilbur died and for the first time since the phone call from fundy, niki doesn't blame someone for his death
i'm just thinkin.....they've stopped for the night out in the middle of nowhere, its an endless orange dustbowl as far as the eye can see, night sky stretching up above them. they're miles away from anything but a petrol station, and the stars are brilliantly bright. and someone just says, "wilbur would have loved this"
eventually they do make it across the country - right on time, they have to take turns getting changed into their funeral blacks in the back of the car as the others guard the windows - and they're tentatively, but permanently, friends. and then they can grieve.
(and yes, the second they find tommy and tubbo in the crowd, ranboo comes out of nowhere to scoop tubbo up into a hug and ask if he's alright - because yes, the world is That Fucking Small.)
anyway. i imagine it being a very melancholic piece - very fraught tone at the beginning as everyone is grieving and can't handle that so they shove all their grief and confusion into anger and shove it at each other, picking petty fights until they realise they are literally not going to back it across if they don't pull their shit together. they try to get along, but the only thing they know they have in common is wilbur. and from there the assumptions spill out, followed by the corrections to those assumptions, then the stories, then how they're all feeling... eventually they settle on the fact that, well, wilbur's dead. they can kick around who they blame and whose fault it is (including their own) for the rest of their lives, and it's never going to bring them back. so instead, they lean on each other - knowing extremely keenly what each other is going through as they process all that cloudy confusion and anger and devastation in the direct aftermath so they can all properly grieve, and properly lay wilbur to rest.
