C'est fou comme les gens ont de moi cette image de femme sophistiquée, glaciale. C'est une telle erreur, c'est tellement mal me connaître.
- Catherine Deneuve on herself in Belle de Jour (1967)
In anticipation of a new film this summer by Catherine Deneuve called ‘Bernadette’ where she plays Bernadette Chirac, the wife of French Jacques Chirac, I’ve been re-watching some her back catalogue of films. She’s done over 64 films and at almost 80 years old she’s still going strong. And yet out of her many films I’ve always been drawn back to one film which has become a cult classic. Watching it and re-watching it and even gorging on books on its making, new intriguing details reveal themselves about this landmark French art house classic - Belle de Jour (1967).
I once had the privilege of having dinner with her - or rather sat around the same table - through a Parisian host and his lovely wife who had gathered an eclectic group of friends across generations together. I was too self-conscious to talk about her film career directly. I was on surer ground when we indulged in small talk where she was perfectly down to earth and very pleasant. I felt it would be rude to go all fan girl on her and pepper her with questions about Belle de Jour in particular as she’s known to be very ambivalent about her experience of the film - a film that really defined her in the eyes of many people.
But it didn’t mean she didn’t recognise its cultural importance though as she was quite happy to amuse us with a funny story about Belle de Jour. A newly restored 35mm version was funded by the fashion house Saint Laurent back in 2018. Deneuve always had a close relationship with Yves Saint Laurent and also the fashion house. She was the one to introduce Buñuel to Saint Laurent. So the fashion house had a glitzy premiere in New York. But they didn’t count on many of their guests being late. Most of the guests were stuck in the New York traffic and the rain. However Martin Scorsese was the only one to get out of cab and run like a mad man through the pelting rain and huge traffic. A true cinephile, he was so desperate to see the film restored to its former glory that he would go to any lengths to see it.
In Belle de Jour, Catherine Deneuve, whose limpid beauty is capable of sustaining any interpretation, is a perfect Severine and demonstrates a remarkable control in progressing, with enormous economy of gesture and movement, from frigidity to physical warmth as the bored housewife who indulges in part time sex work.
“I felt they showed more of me than they’d said they were going to,” Catherine Deneuve remarked to Pascal Bonitzer in 2004, about the making of Luis Buñuel’s 1967 Belle de jour. “There were moments when I felt totally used. I was very unhappy.”
The story of Séverine, a deeply disenchanted haute bourgeois Paris housewife who finds erotic liberation through byzantine psycho-sexual fantasies and part-time work at an upscale brothel, Belle de jour certainly made extreme demands of Deneuve: her character is flogged, raped, and pelted with muck, among other assaults. But despite her objections to the way she was treated and her difficulties with Buñuel, Deneuve’s performance in Belle de jour turned out to be one of her most iconic.
Deneuve, who had become a star only three years earlier, as the melancholy jeune fille in Jacques Demy’s 1964 all-sung musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, was just twenty-three when Belle de jour came out; notably, Buñuel’s film was released in France less than three months after Demy’s radiant, MGM-inspired musical The Young Girls of Rochefort, starring Deneuve and her real-life sister Françoise Dorléac.
But Belle de jour, more than any other film from the first decade of her career, defined what would become one of the actress’s most notorious personae: the exquisite blank slate lost in her own masochistic fantasies and onto whom all sorts of perversions could be projected. (Deneuve as deviant tabula rasa was first seen in Roman Polanski’s 1965 Repulsion, in which she plays a damaged beauty plummeting into psychosis; but Belle de jour doesn’t portray its heroine as mad, instead remaining deliberately ambiguous about the origins of her unconventional desires - and presaging the bizarre libertines she would later play in such films as Marco Ferreri’s Liza, 1972, and Tony Scott’s The Hunger, 1983.)
Buñuel was at a very different stage of his career from his young star, but Belle de jour represented a peak for him as well, the greatest - and most successful - film of his extremely rich late period. These works, bookended by 1964’s Diary of a Chambermaid and 1977’s That Obscure Object of Desire (his final film), were made mostly in France - where Buñuel had begun his filmmaking career with the incendiary, surrealist Un chien andalou (1929) - following the exiled Spanish director’s two decades in Mexico.
Many of these late projects were cowritten with Jean-Claude Carrière and focus intensely on sexual perversion (a theme that recurs throughout Buñuel’s work). Belle de jour certainly falls into that category, and also, typically, skewers the entitled classes. Yet it stands out as the director’s most intricate character study—but of a protagonist who resists definition; the heroine, frequently trussed up and mussed up, retains an odd, opaque dignity in her debauchery.
In that same interview with Bonitzer, Deneuve was judicious enough to distinguish her experience of making Belle de jour from the final product, calling it a “wonderful film.” But her first meetings with Buñuel hinted at the duress that was to follow. According to John Baxter’s 1994 biography, Buñuel, it took time for the director to “warm to” his star: “He felt, with some justice, that she had been foisted on him, first by the Hakims [Belle de jour’s producers], then by her lover of the time, François Truffaut.” After dining with Buñuel at his house, the book recounts, Deneuve “left with little more than an impression that he disliked actors in general and was reserving his decision about her. The only advice he offered was the advice he had always given actors: ‘Don’t do anything. And above all, don’t . . . perform.’”
Though Deneuve deferred to her director, she was no puppet; Belle de jour is as much hers as Buñuel’s. The filmmaker, famously resistant to “psychological” interpretations of his work, stuffs Belle de jour with his trademarks, confounding any attempt to parse meaning: the surrealist blurring of fantasy and reality, fetishism, sexual perversion, blasphemy.
But as Séverine, Deneuve, despite operating in the nebulous realm between dream and waking, imbues the film with irresistible and very real lust - and luster. Sporting the chicest Yves Saint Laurent finery, Deneuve revels in the peculiar desires of her character while always inviting our own. As Buñuel himself acknowledges in his 1984 autobiography, My Last Sigh (published a year after his death), Belle de jour “was my biggest commercial success, which I attribute more to the marvelous whores than to my direction.” (Per Baxter, after the filming of Belle de jour, he would finally admit of his star, “She’s really a very good actress.”) Deneuve’s gift was to update the world’s oldest profession for her still-expanding résumé.
The director had some modifying to do as well. Buñuel, who adapted Joseph Kessel’s 1928 novel with Carrière, assessed the source material dryly in My Last Sigh: “The novel is very melodramatic, but well constructed, and it offered me the chance to translate Séverine’s fantasies into pictorial images as well as to draw a serious portrait of a young female bourgeois masochist. I was also able to indulge myself in the faithful description of some interesting sexual perversions.”
He wastes no time in establishing those bizarre erotic proclivities. In Belle de jour’s opening scene, Séverine and her doting husband of one year, Pierre Serizy (Jean Sorel), a handsome, dutiful surgeon, are snuggled close in a horse-drawn carriage; he interrupts the tender moment with the lament “If only you weren’t so cold.” She pulls away, defensive. The sound of horse bells, which has been increasing in volume from the film’s first shot - and will indicate Séverine’s dreams or fantasies throughout - stops. Pierre orders his wife out of the cab; when she refuses, he and the two drivers remove her by force. She is gagged, bound to a tree, and whipped by the coachmen, who are then instructed by Pierre to rape her. When one begins to ravish her, Séverine appears to be in ecstasy.
This carnal reverie is soon interrupted by the Serizys at home, preparing for their usual chaste bedtime ritual. Pierre, in white pajamas, asks his pale-pink-nightie-clad wife, under the covers in a separate bed, what she’s thinking about: “I was thinking about you . . . and us. We were out for a ride in a carriage”—a scenario Pierre has heard before.
The fantasy clearly belongs to Séverine alone; she finds erotic thrills in her secret thoughts of debasement and humiliation, her florid imagination compensating for her sterile, sexless existence. Her most private desires will soon be realized at 11, cité Jean de Saumur, the address of the boutique bordello run by Madame Anaïs (Geneviève Page), given to Séverine by Pierre’s louche friend Husson (Michel Piccoli).
At Madame Anaïs’s, Séverine - now going by the nom de pute Belle de jour, a reference to her two-to-five shift (she insists on being home when Pierre returns from his workday at the hospital) - is horrified at first but proves to be a quick study. A burly Asian client scares off her two seasoned colleagues with his mysterious, buzzing lacquered box, but she is absolutely transfixed; after the john leaves, she, lying prone on the bed, lifts her head, her luxuriant mane of blonde hair disheveled, to reveal a woman still drunk on orgasmic pleasure.
The contents of the box are one of the film’s many mysteries (when asked what is inside, Buñuel would reply, “Whatever you want there to be”). Yet the greatest enigma is Séverine herself: why does she recoil from the slightest sexual advance from her husband yet lose herself, both in fantasy and in her new line of work, in elaborate masochistic tableaux? “Pierre, it’s your fault too. I can explain everything,” Séverine insists to her husband in the opening fantasy sequence, as she’s being forcibly removed from the landau. But of course, she can’t - and won’t.
As in Repulsion, there are flashbacks to possible childhood trauma in Belle de jour. In one, a man appears to touch a young Séverine inappropriately; in another, she stubbornly refuses the Blessed Sacrament. But unlike in Repulsion, whose final, prolonged shot of a menacing family photo is offered as the root of Carole’s pathology, these scenes in Buñuel’s film are almost non sequiturs, presented not as psychological explanation but as blips in a baroque sexual surrealism.
As Séverine’s reveries and job demands become stranger and more mysterious - in one daydream, she is pelted with thick black mud by Pierre and Husson, who call her “tramp” and “slut”; a ducal client solicits her in the bois de Boulogne to perform in a necrophilic rite - Deneuve retains her porcelain, celestial inscrutability, while simultaneously transforming into an earthbound debauchee, delighting in her own defilement. Madame Anaïs (whose early, shameless flirtation with Séverine - who eventually reciprocates - is the first of the many moments in Deneuve’s filmography that would cement her status as a lesbian icon) touts her new employee’s regal bearing to prospective customers: “[She’s] a little shy, perhaps, but a real aristocrat.”
Séverine’s coworkers, Charlotte (Françoise Fabian) and Mathilde (Maria Latour), are constantly remarking on the impeccable cut and style of her ensembles. Yet what this seemingly untouchable goddess craves most is the brutality of her latest john, the thug Marcel (Pierre Clémenti), a rough with metal teeth, a walking stick that doubles as a shiv, and fetishwear (shiny boots of leather with matching overcoat) that could have been dreamed up in an atelier overseen by Kenneth Anger and Pierre Cardin.
Séverine’s relationship with Marcel will lead to Pierre’s ruin - or does it? The ambiguous ending of Belle de jour suggests that everything that preceded it may have existed only in the heroine’s cracked dreamscape. Like the buzzing box, the film’s final scene is whatever you want it to be.
Yet one thing is certain: Deneuve transcends kink. And despite her misery during the Belle de jour shoot, she would return for even more bizarre treatment three years later in Buñuel’s Tristana, losing both her virtue and a leg.
Almost 55 years after it was made Belle de Jour continues to be a compelling film. It takes on greater curiosity for me as I live in Paris and there are Séverines aplenty that I come across. But the film also speaks to a non-French audience even today as it remains a shrewd commentary on the hypocrisy of social relations and sexual politics. Buñuel invites us to ponder the transgression of a socially respectable woman secretly being a prostitute in the afternoons, but I don’t think he bothered to pose the question why a socially respectable gentleman should be secretly visiting a prostitute in the afternoons - which happens more than one might think and that behaviour is normalised. Something to think about.

Hello! I hope this isn't a lazy question on my part, but I was wondering if you might have a recommendation or two on a good book re: the lead-up to the Terreur and Thermidor reaction? I've always heard of Robespierre and Saint-Just as being two horrific figures who murdered people in droves, and while it does appear the terreur yielded a lot of death, I'd love to read a more nuanced/ less sensationalized overview of the period. If you know of a book or two that cover this topic, I'd be super grateful for a rec! French or English, no preference at all. Thank you for your help!
Well I don't know a lot about Saint-Just. The only recent book I know is his biography by Antoine BOULANT.
About Robespierre :
Robespierre: la fabrication d'un mythe, BELISSA Marc.
Robespierre: la fabrication d'un monstre, MARTIN Jean-Clément.
About La Terreur (rationalizing the events) :
La Terreur, MARTIN Jean-Clément.
Visages de la Terreur : L'exception politique de l'an II, BIARD Michel.
Le tribunal révolutionnaire: Punir les ennemis du peuple, BOULANT Antoine.
Thermidorian reaction :
En finir avec Robespierre et ses amis, BIARD Michel.
La réaction thermidorienne, MATHIEZ Albert. (It's not recent but "la fabrique" edition has a preface in which Yannick BOSC and Florence GAUTHIER put the production of the book in its original context).

Hugo Award Nominees Thoughts
Best Novel:
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty
The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera
Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh
Starter Villain by John Scalzi
Translation State by Ann Leckie
Witch King by Martha Wells
Largely makes sense to me: Saint and Glory were my nominees as well, and probably the strongest on my short list. Witch and Translation were on my longlist, both good and unsurprising nominees. Adventures I haven't read but have heard good things about, I wasn't a fan of the author's early work so I hadn't picked it up but it sounds fun. Villain I don't know about but I'm willing to try.
I'm not surprised that my other nominees didn't make it: Chain-Gang All-Stars I think was billed more as literary fiction than sci-fi, He Who Drowned the World I thought might be on the list but I imagine missed the cut, and Furious Heaven was never going to make it (second book in a series, less-known author, lengthy military sci-fi)
Best Novella:
“Life Does Not Allow Us to Meet”, He Xi / 人生不相见, 何夕, translated by Alex Woodend
Mammoths at the Gates by Nghi Vo
The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Older
Rose/House by Arkady Martine
“Seeds of Mercury”, Wang Jinkang / 水星播, 王晋康, translated by Alex Woodend
Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher
Thornhedge, Mammoths, and Mimicking were all on my longlist. Rose/House has been on my "want to read" list for a while, but is bafflingly unavailable at the library. Seeds and Life I don't know, but am excited for.
None of my nominees made it in, which I'm sad about. Keeper's Six, The Twice-Drowned Saint, The Narrow Road Between Desires, and Lost in a Moment and Found were all excellent. I nominated less than my total number of slots in an effort to avoid just filling my ballot with everything good that was eligible in a category I don't read much in.
Best Novelette, Best Short Story: I have read none of these, though many of the authors are familiar
Best Series:
The Final Architecture by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Imperial Radch by Ann Leckie
The Last Binding by Freya Marske
The Laundry Files by Charles Stross
October Daye by Seanan McGuire
The Universe of Xuya by Aliette de Bodard
Last Binding was one of my nominees, glad to see it made it. I'd completely forgotten that Imperial Radch would be eligible again, happy that others remembered. October Daye is a perennial favorite, though not a nominee of mine this year. Xuya is a personal pet-peeve: every book of it sounds amazing, and they never work for me, and I keep reading them and being frustrated. Architecture I haven't read, but I've loved everything of Tchaikovsky's I've read. Laundry I'm dubious about, given how hard I bounced of his other series.
My other nominees were the Craft series, which I'd love to see get more attention, Unconquerable Sun, which is my personal darling blorbo books that I desperately want people read and love, and Kushiel's Legacy, which was newly re-eligible thanks to the publication of a companion novel, and never got the critical sff attention it deserved.
Best Graphic Story, Best Related Work: haven't read any of these, but it looks like interesting nominees
Best Dramatic Presentations: I don't really care about these
Best Game or Interactive Work:
Alan Wake 2
Baldur’s Gate 3
Chants of Sennaar
DREDGE
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
New category! I don't know enough about games of 2023 to speak on these nominees, but it looks good at a glance? and it's clearly better than the steam awards at least
Best Editors, Zines, Artists, Writers, and Casts: I don't follow these fields enough to have opinions
Lodestar (not a Hugo):
Abeni’s Song by P. Djèlí Clark
Liberty’s Daughter by Naomi Kritzer
Promises Stronger than Darkness by Charlie Jane Anders
The Sinister Booksellers of Bath by Garth Nix
To Shape a Dragon’s Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose
Unraveller by Frances Hardinge
Shape was one of my nominees, one of my favorite books of the year all over. Very glad to see it here. Since it was published and marketed aimed at adults, even though it's about teenagers at magic school, I imagine we'll see a repeat of the Scholomance eligibility discourse. Booksellers was... fine? But nothing particularly noteworthy to me. Abeni and Liberty I don't know, but like the authors. Unraveller I don't know, but have heard good things about the author. Promises I am going to preemptively not read given how much I disliked (and DNFed) the first two.
I'm sad to see my other two nominees, The Shape of Drowning and The Spirit Bares Its Teeth not on here. Drowning reminded me very sharply of Diana Wynne Jones, and Spirit was one of my best books of the year, with an excellent narrative voice. Maybe teen horror isn't doing that strongly now?
Astounding (not a Hugo):
Moniquill Blackgoose (1st year of eligibility)
Sunyi Dean (2nd year of eligibility)
Ai Jiang (2nd year of eligibility)
Hannah Kaner (1st year of eligibility)
Em X. Liu (1st year of eligibility)
Xiran Jay Zhao (eligibility extended at request of Dell Magazines)
So can we just go ahead and call this one for Xiran Jay Zhao already? Even leaving aside that they are a strong nominee, I can't imagine voters not using this as a protest against last year's scandal. Of those I've read, Blackgoose is my favorite, and was one of my nominees. Kaner and Liu both had good first novels/ellas and are solid nominees, though not my picks. Dean and Jiang I don't know.
My other nominees were Isabel J. Kim, Maya Deane, Vajra Chandrasekera, and C. E. McGill.
Overall:
This is a very reassuring ballot, after last year. Nothing here is deeply surprising, nothing is deeply surprising to be missing. The announcement also included an explanation of nominees that declined (Martha Wells continues to be classy in declining further nominations for Murderbot) or were ineligible, and why.
I have ~15 fiction books to read for voting, which is very manageable. In particular, already having read 4/6 of the series is a major help.

GRAZIE

John Felton Death and Life Post 💔🗡️
John Felton, who had very kindly decided to strike a swanky pose with the knife before killing Mr Villiers. (Richard Sawyer, 15 May 1830, nearly 200 years after Felton died, so for a corpse, he's looking pretty good here) ^
Felton is a mystery man, possibly born in Suffolk in possibly 1595, but since he didn't slide out the womb with FUTURE ASSASSIN branded across his forehead, no one cares much enough to keep track.
His life continued in obscurity until the 1620s where he is on record for the Cadiz Expedition of 1625, which was backed by Villiers and went about as well as a military operation would go if you were blind folded and had your hands tied together. Plenty died from starvation and disease and the reputation of Villiers was on the decline. Which is fair enough when you consider this killed around 7000 men and lost a handful (62) shops. (Which is more ships lost than Odysseus and you do NOT want to be like Odysseus). I fucking hate Odysseus.
Felton had some in-between gigs but nothing too major until the anglo-french war in which he was rejected to join Villiers fleet. But two months later in August 1627, Villiers said something along the lines of 'yeah go for it' and Felton was off the bench and on the team, now serving as Lieutenant.
BANG CRASH DWOLLOP
it was a fucking nightmare. Not for Felton or Villiers those guys were actually fine but everyone else, not so much. At Saint Martin-De-Re in October the same year, their siege failed (due to poor, planning, poor weapons, terrible ladders, and an all around poor time) and 5000 troops were lost despite retreating. Despite surviving, Felton did not have it easy, his family describes him as a man plagued with nightmares, to quote his sister he was 'much troubled by dreams of fighting'. Which is how I describe myself when someone bids higher than me on eBay and steals the item i desire >:-(
Felton, living in delusion, requested 80 squid and the job role as captain. Having no experience (and no boyfriend who is also the king) he did not get either. This sent him into a rage and on Saturday 23 August 1628, the VILLAIN struck and stabbed Villiers in the chest, killing him.
Genuinely awful picture ^
Now you don't just kill the ex king's (died in 1625) bosom friend and live to tell about it (that's the job of angst poets and teenagers in obelisk observation societies). Though many believed that Felton's actions saved the kingdom and secured Charles Is reign (at least for a bit). But at Tyburn on 29 November 1628, Felton was hung (hanged????) And course, it's quite a bit hard to bounce back from something like that.
He was then moved to Portsmouth (wooo!) And strung in a Gibbet for all to gaze at.
I actually cannot put into words, there are no phrases no single way to explain how much I would do to see this gibbet, the see the Lisk, it's truly unreal. No eBay bidder can out bid my desire on this one.
These two men (erm ignore the malicious ghost) recreated the murder on the 5th September. It was so cool, my heart was racing. I was zazzed, not even over the moon, I was doing laps of it. Unreal. ^
Below is a report from the 1880s
"A relic has been exposed by workmen engaged in erecting the new refreshments and retiring rooms upon Southsea Pier. It is none other than a portion of the veritable gibbet on which the body of the murderer of the Duke of Buckingham was suspended in chains upon Southsea Beach. The murder occurred in 1628. The criminal was hanged at Tyburn, but it was customary to return remains to the scene of the crime. The gibbet bears the Borough arms and a date - but the latter is the day on which it was decided that the gibbet (which was then a well-known landmark) should act as one of the borough boundaries. It is also studded with leaden bullets, from which it would appear that soldiers had been in the habit of discharging their muskets at it. The relic is now lying full length on the pier, but it will be as soon as possible once more erected upon its old site by Mr. Adams, the Borough Engineer. (Later it was replaced by an obelisk)"
The Obelisk, and perhaps the heart of Felton, marked the site from 1782 onwards.
I suppose it must not be all that nice to have your life summarized into just some assassin, and one barely anyone remembers. Felton would only have been in his early thirties when he was killed. :-(

Who am I?
My name: Mayacita or Maya Writes (pen name)
How I describe myself: I am a millennial and and ex-programmer turn into a religious sister with the heart of a philosopher who ponders about Life, Truth, God, and Heaven. A missionary and a contemplative by heart.
Goal(s) in life: To die straight to heaven, without purgatory, seeing Jesus, my beloved spouse, face to face, to hug, hold, and have Him for eternity, to be able to be close to Him as possible. To become a Saint God wants me to be. To give souls to God as much as possible
What I wanted to do or became before I went on to become a religious: just having a normal life with a normal job and be happy about what I do or what I have. I used to think that I will live in The US forever. I just want to be successful and happy in life. Satisfied with my work and enjoying life and in what I do. I used to think that I would live in Northern California, a place where I dream of. Fantasia 2000 (1999)
Coming 60 years after the original, Fantasia 2000 mostly captures the majesty and wonder of its predecessor with a visually stunning, inspired blend of animation and music.
Introduced by a variety of celebrities which include Steve Martin, Itzhak Perlman, Quincy Jones, Bette Midler, James Earl Jones, Penn & Teller and Angela Lansbury, the program includes several classical musical pieces, each brought to life by distinct styles of animation, including:
Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, in which abstract shapes resembling butterflies and birds (or perhaps bats) battle.
Pines of Rome by Ottorino Respighi, about a family of flying humpback whales who become separated and must find each other again.
Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin is set in 1930’s New York City and follows four people who dream of a better life.
Piano Concerto No. 2, Allegro, Opus 102 by Dmitri Shostakovich, which is loosely based on Han Christian Andersen’s The Steadfast Tin Soldier, in which a one-legged toy soldier falls in love with a toy ballerina and protects her from a lustful jack-in-the-box.
The Carnival of the Animals (Le Carnival des Animaux), finale by Camille Saint-Saëns, about a disapproving group of flamingos that attempts to discourage one of their members from playing with his yo-yo.
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas, a segment carried over from the original Fantasia that sees Mickey Mouse play with the magic spells of his master, with disastrous results.
Pomp and Circumstance – Marches 1, 2, 3 and 4 by Edward Elgar, in which Donald and Daisy Duck act as assistants to Noah and help him gather two of each animal for his ark before the world is flooded.
Firebird Suite – 1919 Version by Igor Stravinsky. In this final tale, a forest sprite accidentally wakes the Firebird, a volcanic creature that burns everything in its wake.
Besides the occasional use of CGI imagery, the biggest difference between this film and its predecessor is the hosts that introduce the musical segments. While some of them do make the film a tad dated (I’m not sure how Penn and Teller will be seen by the time we get “Fantasia 3000”, for example), generally they serve their purpose. When Fantasia was conceived, it was intended to be in a constant state of flux. Every few years it would’ve been re-released with segments added or removed. Had this plan gone forward, we probably would've had Deems Taylor introduce some of the “Fantasia 2.0” releases but not others. This would've been weird and Fantasia 2000 seeks to rectify this with a slew of different hosts. Had it been a big hit (it wasn’t), it would’ve been much easier to remove or add pieces in subsequent releases.
Enough about that. Let’s talk about the main feature. I wouldn’t call this 1999 film as ambitious as the one in 1940 but in some ways, it is. The Rhapsody in Blue story, for example, does not use a style of animation that resembles anything else Disney but you wish more films would ape its style. Less successful is the whales’ story, which utilizes a blend of CGI and traditional animation. Unfortunately, the mix is often glaring. The finale is strong but the whole thing is too cutesy. Similarly, the Tin Soldier story is visually dynamic, vibrant and able to cram a sweet little bit of romance in its short running time but has been softened from the original tale – seemingly to appeal to kids. Many of Disney’s first pictures weren’t afraid to be frightening. Stories like Dumbo, Bambi or Pinocchio could be too intense for the littlest ones… and we love them for it. You can tell the years have made the studio more cautious.
The comedic stories are where Fantasia 2000 fares best. The yo-yo spinning flamingo is a riot. The slapstick and musical beats are so perfectly choreographed you’ll wish it could last longer. Similarly, forever-favorites Donald Duck and Daisy make for big laughs. The aforementioned Rhapsody in Blue also contains many clever moments to bring a smile to your face.
Then, we get to the finale, one that’s worthy of following up the Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria conclusion of the 1940 picture. Dynamic uses of color, fluid visuals that tell a narrative without needing words or being too on-the-nose and plenty of memorable imagery. It caps off a picture that began with a wonderfully abstract interpretation of music and paves over any rough patches that might’ve been in between. It makes you crave more “Fantasias” but we're unlikely to see any for a while. A shame.
There’s so much imagination in Fantasia 2000 and it’s so refreshing to see. Perhaps a higher-up at the studio will find a way to convince the right people and green-light another. Until then, Fantasia 2000 is a fine picture. Perhaps not a must-see like the original, but a memorable program that offers a lot. (On Blu-ray, September 1, 2018)
