A serendipitous find: the Autumn 2020 issue of Sea History, publication of the National Maritime Historical Society of New York, with the article "Freedom and Whaling on Nantucket" by Skip Finley. It's all about Black and mixed race mariners, whalers, and shipowners on the island.
Tumblr media
Sampson Dyer, early 19th century. A free man of Black and Wampanoag descent, he engaged in the China Trade and commissioned this portrait from the Chinese artist Spoilum, "who specialized in European-style paintings in oil of sea captains and both Chinese and Western merchants."
Tumblr media
Captain Absalom F. Boston, by unknown artist c. 1835. A successful whaling captain and businessman, he also supported anti-slavery abolitionists and helped build a church and a school.
Tumblr media
Arthur Cooper, portrait by Sally Gardner c. 1830. Cooper had been enslaved in Virginia and escaped to Nantucket between 1815 and 1818. When the Fugitive Slave Act threatened to send Cooper and his wife back to Virginia in 1822, the locals successfully drove away the slave catcher sent to retrieve him. In Skip Finley's words:
Francis Macy, a cousin of the prominent Rotch family, intervened along with “a large assemblage of persons,” including large numbers of both the black and white communities on the island, who had surrounded the house. Sylvanus Macy stepped up to suggest the power of attorney was a forgery and said, “We are not in Virginia now but in Yankee Town, and we want those colored people to man our whale ships and will not suffer them to be carried back to bondage.”

A PETITION TO THE PRESIDENT
From
THE INTERNATIONAL UPLIFT LEAGUE.
To His Excellency,
The President of
The United States of America,
The White House, Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. President:
For the GOOD and true HONOR of our beloved country, the United States of America, in the NAME of ALMIGHTY GOD, LYNCHING should be abolished.  Opinion seems unanimous that the United States Government possesses permanently the greater jurisdictional control (about 3/4) over each United States Citizen; and the State in which the citizen resides holds the remaining (1/4) jurisdiction.
Hence the elimination of LYNCHING, our most heinous STIGMA, should be accomplished through the Federal Government, because the respective States, for more than fifty years, have failed to suppress LYNCHING.  Therefore, we urgently appeal to our honored President, and hereby PETITION him to URGE the enactment into LAW, during the Extra Session of Congress, of either Senator France's or Representative Dyer ANTI-LYNCHING BILL.  By such worthy and magnanimous ACT, Mr. President, you will immortalize your NAME like the illustrious Lincoln when we signed the Emancipation Proclamation.  Amen.
For the Women.
(Miss) Emma J. Chrichton
For the Men.
David Newton E. Campbell
Secretary I.U. League
P.S. We hope to secure millions of signatures to this PETITION and forward same duly.

STATISTICS.
NAME: Andrew Michael Dyer
GOES BY: Drew or Andrew
AGE: 35 years old
BIRTHDAY: May 5th, 1988
ZODIAC CHART: Taurus sun, sagittarius moon, gemini rising
GENDER & PRONOUNS: Cismale, he/him
FACE CLAIM: Kendrick Sampson
OCCUPATION: Business man (Owner of the Royal Cove Yacht Club)
PLACE OF BIRTH: Boston, Massachussetts
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Stoughton Estates
SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
HEIGHT: 6′0″ (182 cm)
BACKGROUND.
Andrew was born and raised in Seaport, Boston. As the eldest of four, a lot of the family responsibility fell on his shoulder, and he accepted it all with open arms. He was raised in what you might call a perfect environment. Despite the expectations and rules placed on him and his siblings by their parents, they had also showered their kids with love and luxury and privilege. They taught them that even though they lived a good life, it didn't mean that they didn't have to work hard.
Drew excelled in school, as expected. He balanced his time between his studies, extracurriculars (he was part of the race and track team), and his social life, so he was often busy, and he rarely had free time.
He was expected to take over the family business and become the owner of the business consulting firm his father owned, except his younger sibling showed more interest in that, while Andrew wanted to buy and grow his own business, wanting some sort of independence.
After graduating from the University of Chicago with a degree in business administration, he went on to do his MBA in Dartmouth University, coming back to Boston to settle down and work, and starting investing in businesses and growing his network.
At twenty-seven, he met Eden Shepherd, quickly falling in love with her, realizing early on that she would be the woman he would spend the rest of his life with. They traveled the world together, and despite some explosive fights here and there, they made it work. After a long-term relationship, they got engaged. The day of the wedding started off as one of the best days of his life that rapidly turned into the worst, with Eden getting cold feet and running off, leaving him at the altar two years ago. His ego was already beyond wounded and his heart beyond broken that he knew that even though he tried to contact her a few times to understand, he had to let her go and and save himself, too.
With that, Drew threw himself into his work, using it as the primary source of distraction. He hasn't been in a relationship since, opting to casually hook up here and there whenever he was in need of company, and eventually Eden became a mere memory.
As a kid up to his teen years, his family vacationed in Nightrest during summers, and due to college and his busy lifestyle, he rarely visited again. Up until he met Eden, who had family there.
Drew's ambition often leads him to invest and buy out businesses here and there, hence when the murderer in Nightrest was caught and the town was proclaimed safe again, he decided to buy out the yacht club and revive it, which was once very lucrative, and once owned by his father before he sold it. It felt like a nice new project to work on and to expand his wealth. Hence, he moved there to focus on that.
PERSONALITY.
Drew is a polite, mature, and easy going guy. He's a conversationalist and does enjoy being out and about. He's very loyal and reliable, but stubborn and hard-headed, on the other hand. He's very set in his ways and it takes a while to change his mind. He's definitely an ambitious person and a workaholic, the type to throw himself into his work and lose himself for hours. However, he values his free time as well, and is the type to prioritize his own health and needs above all. He's the type to follow his head rather than his heart, something which was solidified after Eden left, and because of that, he enjoys hook ups and one-night stands rather trying to seriously date again (so he's kinda a whore :/ omg).
WANTED CONNECTIONS.
Honestly, since he's fairly new to Nightrest, any pre-existing connections would probably be back when he used to vacation in Nightrest as a teen/very early adult, or back when he visited with Eden. Otherwise, he's been back like a week, so! I'm down for anything that makes sense thank you x

Famous #witchesinhistory part I🔮
According to various cultural worldviews, witchcraft is the use of supernatural powers, usually "to do harm". Someone who practices witchcraft, or is accused of practicing witchcraft, is called a witch. In medieval and early modern Europe, where the term witchcraft originated, accused witches were usually women. Anthropologists have applied this term to similar occult practices described by many other cultures. Belief in witchcraft is often present within groups whose cultural framework includes a magical world view. In modern Western culture, witchcraft is sometimes also used to refer to benign, positive, or neutral metaphysical practices, such as the techniques of divination, meditation, and self-help found in the modern Pagan and New Age movements.
Though, the Bible provides some evidence that these commandments against sorcery were enforced under the Hebrew kings:
"And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee. And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?"

THE BOOKS THAT MADE DRACULA

THE BOOKS THAT MADE DRACULA
The London Library today unveiled a fascinating discovery that sheds new light on how Dracula was researched and written. We’ve found 26 books that are almost certainly the original copies that Bram Stoker used to help research his enduring classic.
Philip Spedding, the Library’s Development Director who made the discovery, commented: “Bram Stoker was a member of The London Library but until now we have had no indication whether or how he used our collection. Today’s discovery changes that and we can establish beyond reasonable doubt that numerous books still on our shelves are the very copies that he was using to help write and research his masterpiece.”
Philip’s detective trail began with the collection of Stoker’s handwritten and typed notes that had been discovered in 1913 but only published in facsimile form in 2008*. The notes list a wide range of Stoker’s sources for Dracula and include hundreds of references to individual lines and phrases that he considered relevant. A recent trawl of our shelves has revealed that the Library has original copies of 25 of these books, carrying detailed markings that closely match Stoker’s notebook references.
The markings range from crosses and underlinings against relevant paragraphs, to page turnings on key pages, to instructions to have someone copy entire sections into his typewritten notes.
Some of the most heavily marked books include Sabine Baring-Gould’s “Book of Were-Wolves” and Thomas Browne’s “Necromancy – Divination of the Dead”. But the range of titles also sheds light on the detail of Stoker’s geographical and historical research – for example, AF Crosse’s “Round About the Carpathians” and Charles’ Boner’s “Transylvania”.
The suggestion that Stoker was using the Library heavily is given added weight by the timing of his seven-year membership which coincides almost exactly with the period when he was working on Dracula and beginning to develop an active writing career alongside his already very successful role as theatre manager at The Lyceum Theatre. Earlier research by our Archive Librarian Helen O’Neill showed that he joined in 1890, the year he visited Whitby and first developed the idea for his vampire story, and he finally left the Library in 1897, the year Dracula was published. His membership form is seconded by his close friend Henry Hall Caine, a bestselling author of the day, a London Library member, and the man to whom Stoker dedicated Dracula, using Hall Caine’s nickname “Hommy-Beg”.
Philip Spedding continued, “It is almost certain that the books we have found have been marked up by Bram Stoker himself and that he drew heavily on The London Library’s collection to help research Dracula. Indeed, it is not fanciful to suggest that his extraordinary tale of the Transylvanian undead has many of its origins in the quiet confines of St. James’s Square.”
Professor Nick Groom from Exeter University and a leading expert on gothic literature said, “This is a very exciting discovery. I have examined the books and their annotations with Philip Spedding and have compared them with Bram Stoker’s own notes. I am in no doubt that Bram Stoker used these very copies for Dracula – a book that took him seven years to write. They demonstrate that The London Library was the crucible of one of the most influential novels in world history.”
Philip Marshall, Director of The London Library concluded: “Bram Stoker followed the same path that many writers have pursued before and since – using the Library to transition into a serious writing career, and drawing heavily on the Library’s collection to seek inspiration and ideas for his masterpiece. With the Library’s incredible list of members past and present, some of the most famous characters in fiction must have been developed here – with today’s discovery we can feel sure that Dracula was one of them. We hope that many aspiring writers will follow Bram Stoker’s example and use The London Library as a source of inspiration and support when creating their own masterpieces.”
