Draw the cat eye, sharp enough to kill a man. You did some bad things, but I'm the worst of them. Sometimes I wonder which one'll be your last lie. They say looks can kill and I might try. I don't dress for women, I don't dress for men. Lately I've been dressing for revenge.

For a while now I have been wondering what the overall point was of characters like Sandor Clegane and Dontos Hollard being in Sansa’s story and I think I finally figured it out. While it’s true that both of them are false Florians and have betrayed Sansa in different ways, it should be noted that Sansa’s morals and ideals has sparked something in them to help her in some capacity (i.e Sandor saving her in the bread riot & Dontos helping her escape). Both of them are there to establish Sansa has the ability to inspire knightly valor in others. And if Sansa’s ability to inspire that is strong enough to get two alcoholic, disillusioned, broken men to fight for her, then imagine what Sansa can do with it when she inspires the Knights of the Vale to fight for her cause.

Sansa is brave, gentle, and strong. Yes, she should have someone with those qualities to love her, but they are also perfect words to describe her disposition.

Red
“Uhhh- What is this again?” Sansa asked.
“It is a direwolf.” Arya said, clearly annoyed.
“That is a direwolf?” Sansa asked incredulously.
“Of course! What else would it be?”
“It looks like an anteater.” Sansa said, nose wrinkling. Rickon from behind the both of them started laughing hysterically.
“Well it is a direwolf!” Arya snapped.
“Why is it bleeding?” Sansa asked.
“It is not bleeding!” Arya said, rolling her eyes the same way that their mother does. “It is just red!”
“Why is the direwolf Red?”
“Do you not hear what they call you?” Arya asked rhetorically. The smallfolk and other lords?”
“No…”
“They call you the Red Wolf.” Rickon said.
“Oh!” Sansa said, and smiled. “And you actually embroidered this for me?”
“Yes, yes, don’t make such a big deal about it.” Arya grumbled and Sansa scooped her up in a great big hug.
“Well thank you sister! I will hang it right above my bed!” Sansa said, doing so right then and there. The ugly shade or red practically glowed in the dark but she loved it all the same.

Alayne Stone / Princess Sansa Stark (2/?)
Uh.. hi! It has been a strong two months since I very brazenly announced my plan to draw every female ASOIAF character. Well, I never said I’d do it QUICKLY. Life happens! I won’t go into detail. So here is Alayne/Sansa. I also drew her in her Sansa era but it was kind of giving depression vibes so I probably won’t post it. Plus I don’t want to commit to having people appear twice in this series-- it would make the Arya situation a nightmare. Anyway. I appreciate all the lovely asks I’ve gotten about characters and YES I WILL DO THEM though I might be 93 by the time I finish. See you in 2023
ALso! I’m thinking of opening up a couple commissions this winter, let me know if you would be interested. <3

It’s always very odd to me when I read criticism of A Song Of Ice And Fire online (by which I mainly mean: on Tumblr) which takes for granted that this is some sort of obsessively dark and edgy and mean-spirited fantasy, because ... that's not what the series is actually like at all?
I mean, yes, some awful (and graphically described) stuff happens in these books, but this is at heart a deeply optimistic and almost embarrassingly romantic story, full of a very obvious sympathy and tenderness for the unhappy and the hurt and the powerless.  The weird gritty-for-the-sake-of-it books that the series's detractors describe wouldn't have recurring POV characters like Sansa Stark or Tyrion Lannister or Davos Seaworth or Samwell Tarly or Brienne of Tarth.  They certainly wouldn't obviously empathize with and respect these characters to the extent the actual books do.  They wouldn't be so obsessive about the importance of hope and kindness and understanding in an otherwise uncaring world.  Whenever the text suggests the world isn't fair or kind there's always an unspoken "but it should be,and I wish it was". You are clearly not meant to think that characters like Roose Bolton or Twyin Lannister are being held up as role models to emulate!
I mean, maybe the TV show is more like that -- I gave up on the show after only a couple of seasons, it was a terrible adaptation of the source material, even before the final season that everyone apparently hated -- but so much of the open disdain for ASOIAF I come across on here reads like the people writing the posts haven't even read a single one of the books. Yes, the popularity of ASOIAF inspired a lot of "dark" fantasy novels that actually are bleakly nihilistic and seem to revel in their characters meeting pointlessly sad and violent ends, but Martin's books are just not like that.
Yes, lots of the world-building for ASOIAF is patently ridiculous, and yes, key parts of the plot are just cribbed from the War of the Roses (or, rather, from historical novels like Sharon Penman's The Sunne in Splendour)  and yes, Martin has said some very stupid things in interviews while busy not writing the series.  And no, I'm not sure I could actually bring myself to recommend the books to anyone who's not read them before (especially when it's so unlikely that the series will ever be finished, let alone in a satisfying way).  I haven’t reread them myself in years.
But honestly, back when I was a quietly miserable teenager these books really meant a lot to me, in part because they are the opposite of the caricature often discussed online.  Yes, they acknowledged that sometimes the world was awful and unbearable.  It is!  But they also suggested that it was still important to try to be fair and kind and to appreciate the moments when things were better.  They are books about trying to do the right thing even when it’s so hard as to seem impossible and nobody else will even know that you tried, written in a way that takes for granted that “the right thing” is also the just and the optimistic and the quietly heroic thing; that doing the right thing when you afraid is more praiseworthy than never being afraid at all. And it is baffling to me how often I see people talking about them now who don't actually seem to have ever even skimmed them but are still vocally passionate in their hatred of something that, as they describe it, simply doesn't exist.

What’s the deal with Arya fans pretending Sansa stans are the ones who like to downplay Arya’s suffering as if it wasn’t the other way around? They project so much, it’s unbelievable. They say we claim Arya looks down on traditional femininity. I can only speak for myself, but I’ve read lots of metas written by Sansa stans that acknowledge Arya respects women in general. That’s why I hate the way so many people condescendingly write post saying that “it’s okay to love both sisters” “you don’t have to put the other down just to prop your fave up”. As if both sisters receive the same amount of hate. Well, I think it’s also okay to NOT love both sisters and have a favorite one. I hate how many bloggers pretend to like Sansa when they obviously don’t (sansabuts) and pretend Arya is not a extremely loved and popular character (there’s nothing wrong with that) and Sansa is not a controversial one, that many people love, but it’s still misunderstood by lots of readers as a shallow, selfish and weak girl. It’s just so mean spirited.
What’s the deal with Arya fans pretending Sansa stans are the ones who like to downplay Arya’s suffering as if it wasn’t the other way around?
They want to be us so badly it makes them look stupid.
There's over a decade of metas on why
people shouldn't downplay Sansa's suffering
people should respect and appreciate Sansa's strengths including her intelligence, charm, wit, resilience, etc
people should understand that being feminine isn't bad at all even in a fantasy book.
etc etc
Arya stans just copy and paste and then point the finger at us ☠️.
The meanest things I've seen Sansa stans say regularly is #shipgirl or making fun of Arya for not knowing sigils.
Arya stans will wake up and say the most misogynistic thing you've ever heard in your life. The kind of shit that would make a 4chan incel blush.
I think a big reason those stans have been so pissed off the past couple of years is because Sansa is no longer the controversial character. She's fairly popular these days among book readers. It's no longer commonplace for people to sprout hate towards her (outside of certain fanbases). People like her and people appreciate her the way they didn't in the 90s and 2000s. It helps that the show indicated where Sansa will end up - on the Northern throne after returning to Winterfell and playing a key role in defeating the Boltons (Ramsay or Roose, take your pick).
Sansa is no longer in Arya's shadow, she's not the 'irrelevant' Stark. She has her own fierce fandom. She clearly has an exciting story in the next two books. She's arguably the one who won the Game of Thrones. All those theories about Sansa marrying the Hound and disappearing from the story or Sansa staying in the Vale no longer read like viable theories but antis coping.

This post is just me appreciating the Direwolves. I love them and I want one.
I'm a big fan of direwolves, I think that's been established, I love them in the story as gigantic wolves that are just incredibly cool, also the fact that direwolves and wargs are part of each other, sharing a soul ? This is why I love fantasy.
Also, also all of the wolves siblings seem to be connected through magic making the Starks siblings also technically connected with each other even thousands of kilometers/miles away and I just love this (Ghost/Jon point of view on Nymeria in Dance was genuinely one of my favorite things ever) and it also makes me wonder what that means for Sansa who is not connected magically anymore to anybody since Lady is dead and it sorta imply that she lost that connection to the Stark magic/the old gods when she lost Lady maybe.
Also I do love them as a narrative device ? they are used by GRMM both as a way to tell us something more about their wargs through the action and personality of said wolves but also to foreshadow their future and I think it's just such a neat device
I wish the fandom would acknowledge that it means that Arya has a leadership arc and will be changing things politically like Nymeria but maybe that's asking too much.

I was supposed to post this on the 9th but I fell sick and couldn't finish it on time. Anyways!
Sansa Stark Month 2023 - Day 09 - Wardrobe Appreciation
Sansa's Winterfell outfits were probably simpler, with shapes made for a child, not hugging her body. The patterns are abstract and inspired by scandinavian ones.
Kings Landing is opulence and more fabric than what you really need in one dress. Lots of silks and shiny embrodiery beffiting of the Heir's bethroted or the Hand's wife. Inspired by italian fashion in 1490 and The Borgias TV show.
And The Vale finds Sansa a little bit older so the dresses look more womanly and fitted but she's still a bastard so the color paletter can't draw the eye too much. Inspired by the Tudor era and The Other Boleyn Girl movie.

One thing that I like about Nihal is that she acts her age and therefore she of course won’t feel completely relatable to the adult reader or to our adult selves. Maybe I myself wouldn’t find her that relatable if I hadn’t first read the novel as a 16-year-old. It is natural for most adult readers to feel more drawn to Bihter. But the disdain some critics have for Nihal’s characterization makes me think that they have never been a teenager. She is not necessarily a “hated” female character, but she is definitely a “dismissed” female character whose characterization is found too extravagant or too weak and whose problems are found irrelevant. I think most critics are too male or too old or too normal or too much of a Bihter fan or too annoyed at rich people (as if Bihter too isn’t from an upper-class family) or too annoyed at Westernized Turkish people (actual category of Turkish critics) to appreciate Nihal.
(Adult readers can appreciate teenage girl characters as the fans of characters like Catherine Earnshaw, Cosette and even Sansa Stark show. But the difference between these and Nihal is that Nihal stays a child. Catherine Earnshaw dies as a teenager but she dies in childbirth. Even Sansa Stark will presumably grow up and is loved as much for her potential as for what she is. Even characters like Jo March and Anne Shirley grow up and have children. What makes Nihal tricky is that her story is not really one of growing up, and growing up is what we expect from the story of a child.)
As for their complexity, they are both complex characters. I actually do find Bihter to be a great character. I am right now planning an essay on Nihal for academic purposes and I can’t help being drawn to talking about Bihter too, it is hard to talk about one without the other. But I find Nihal slightly more complex both because it is rarer for 19th century literature to depict a girl at her stage of life as complex than for it to depict a young married woman as a complex character, and because I find Nihal harder to contain and to “solve”. I think Bihter is an easier character to understand. The mirror scene is great but it also is effectively Bihter analyzing herself for the reader. My particular opinions on Nihal though change quite a bit. See the sheer ambiguity of her feelings for Behlül in just this passage, and it is not even one of my favorite passages of her.

I don’t know why House Stark makes Targs fanatics foam at the mouth when the Lannisters have been that family’s biggest nightmare throughout their reign, and Aerys was incredibly jealous of Tywin and felt upstaged by him. The Lannisters putting in all the hard work to bring down that cursed dynasty since they set foot on Westerosi soil and their effort doesn’t even get appreciated. And thanks to Cersei, Rhaenyra’s and Daemon’s descendants no longer sat on the Iron Throne (because let’s not forget that Robert is their direct descendant and his paternal grandmother is Rhaelle Targaryen).
i have to say, i haven't paid much mind to targnation-starkdom diplomatic relations in order to make a qualified assessment about this. i was under the impression that targ stans were mostly neutral about the starks as a whole? the only one they really seemed to hate was sansa
and, honestly, a lot of that is due to their inability to identify that daenerys and house stark MAY end up having differing, incompatible objectives, otherwise, yes, they would be absolutely foaming at the mouth. but from what i've observed, they mostly just can't fathom why anyone "decent" could ever possibly align themselves against god empress dany christgaryen, so in their fantasies, dany & the starks mostly end up being friends
the sansa opposition is a direct influence of the show, because, for some reason, d&d decided to pile all the possible stark/north dissatisfaction with daenerys on top of her and make her the odd one out
as for the second part of your post, i, for one always found it pretty cool how the targaryens' (+valyrians') doom was entwined with house lannister in one way or the other, but there's no current evidence that this was some long-form historical plan of theirs passed from generation to generation. they have been opportunistic and sometimes even ruthless in their advancement, but i'd say they settled for the nuclear option only as a last resort. tywin's betrayal of aerys came after long years of deranged behaviour and when he was more-or-less losing the war anyway, whereas cersei endured a lot at robert's hands before she decided to hurry his death along. her motives were entirely personal, not ideological i.e. some parasocial historical beef with daemyra :))
also, since i've already started ranting, i wish we could nuance the discussion of robert's death a little bit, because people are a little too eager to point the regicide finger at cersei, IMO. yes, she told lancel to spike robert's wine, but lancel didn't hold the king down and waterboard him with alcohol against his will. even if robert didn't know it was strongwine, he knew it was WINE and he kept drinking it while intentionally and purposelessly placing himself in a dangerous situation. he surely must have felt it was heady, yet he kept drinking it and did nothing to modify his behaviour - basically the equivalent of a medieval DYI. robert was fully in charge of his decisions and his bodily integrity and he chose to do the stupid thing anyway. he wasn't murdered. he did this to himself.

Bravery
“We do not have to do this, you know.” Margaery said, running a thumb over Sansa’s knuckles to calm her down.
“No, I…” Sansa said nervously.
“I can be a friend from college.” Margaery suggested earnestly looking worried for her.
It was not that she did not believe that her family would not be supportive if… when she came out that did not make it any less nerve racking. She did not…
“No. I won’t lie to them.”
“It isn’t technically a lie.” Margaery said far too nonchalantly to be real. “We are friends.”
Sansa rolled her eyes at the innocent word dripping with innuendo. “Come on, Flower Power.” Sansa said, using the name she knows that Margaery hates. When Sansa got a dirty look, she wiped it off her girlfriend's face with a kiss. “Let’s go.”
As they walked up to the front door, Sansa kept getting looks from Margaery since unbeknownst to her she was shaking like a leaf. Margaery was worried for her terrified girlfriend.
Finally they got to the door and her parents answered. “Hello!” They both said, excited to see their daughter for the first time in six months. “Oh who is this.”
“Th- Th- Th-” Sansa began stuttering and Margaery gave her an out. “I’m Margaery. A friend of your daughter’s.”
“Oh, it is nice to meet you Marg…” Her father started before Sansa blurted out.
“Girlfriend! Margaery is my girlfriend!” Sansa blurted out, and turned red.
Both of her parents looked shocked and Sansa looked nervous but stuck out her chest and refused to back down.
“It’s nice to meet you Margaery.” Catelyn said, leading them both in the house.
Sansa, who had been strung like a bow, finally relaxed and was glad she made the leap.

Just to reiterate how Arya and Sam have these parallels of not being able to comfortably fit into Westorosi society’s patriarchal ideals unlike their ‘perfect’ siblings and yet while the theme of toxic masculinity is acknowledged and recognized in Sam’s narrative by fandom, Arya gets hit with nonsense like being ‘male coded’.
In this too we can see the inherent misogyny in this fandom, where Samwell is allowed to be different and like different things and he is appreciated for loving songs and dancing. He gets sympathy for the abuse and toxic masculinity that he faces. His relationship with Gilly is celebrated, he is deserving of love and romance.
And yet Arya gets the hate simply for wanting to learn how to use a sword (And it’s not about using a sword either considering the male characters are badass for using a sword!).
She gets labelled ‘NLOG’, there are popular posts about how her journey is ‘masculine’ or how she is ‘masculine-coded’, posts about how she has ‘internalized misogyny’, where she will never be a Lady because she is not ‘feminine’ enough. How fans only like her because she’s ‘male coded’. How she is not ‘realistic’ or a boring character because she’s ‘male-coded’.
Posts on how Arya will never get love or romance, even when older, because she’s the wrong kind of girl. There are essays about how Arya did not try hard enough to fit in, that she’s equally at fault for the contentious relationship between her and Sansa because she did not spend enough time sewing and doing things that Sansa liked. That Ned not punishing Arya for picking flowers from the marsh or getting her a ‘dancing’ master is him showing ‘favoritism’ implying that Arya should have been punished for stepping outside the bounds of patriarchy dictated femininity.
Arya is treated by fandom like she is flawed for not being the right kind of girl. That she is not important in the narrative because she’s not the right kind of girl. The compassion and kindness so very clearly inherent in the character and embedded in the narrative is ignored in favor of her being a violent killer because she’s not the right kind of girl. Her intelligence, perceptiveness, quick thinking, critical thinking skills ignored because she’s not the right kind of girl. Also ignored widely by fandom that Arya too has taken abuse and kept silent because what good would it do to react and be killed?
These sexist double standards have only widened with the TV show’s horrendous misogyny in the way they wrote and depicted Arya Stark, stripping the character of all the nuance, complexity and everything that makes Arya, Arya in the books. Instead we got an one-dimensional trope in GOT, the complete opposite of book Arya Stark. As GRRM has stressed again and again, the show is not the books and the show characters are not the book characters. Take your ‘Arya has a masculine journey’ posts dripping with misogyny, elsewhere.
[Note:I am not denying the fatphobia with respect to Samwell which is indeed a thing and the reason for why, despite being one of those rare good guys in Westeros, he gets used the least for shipping. Something that GRRM himself bemoaned in one of his blog posts. I am just referring to the difference in how toxic masculinity and femininity are treated by this fandom because while the toxicity of one is recognized, the other is celebrated as a good thing]

The Stark family is well known for being extroverted and friendly individuals who love outdoor activities, sports, and almost anything that gets their blood pumping! They're known to show unreasonable amounts of loyalty to their passions, peers, partners, and family; sometimes being described as almost dog-like. They're proud owners of the Winterfell Wolf Sanctuary, where they teach the wolves who cannot move out into the wild to adapt to humans, their new environment, and even other animals. Each Stark is bonded to a wolf pup at age 10, raised alongside the beast and learning to love them as family and not just a pet.
main characters.
Cregan Stark, Jock: Adopted Cousin, taken in by Ned Stark. Co-Captain and proud defense player of the Iron High hockey team alongside Jacaerys. He's often been described by his peers as ambitious and family-focused, very territorial and defensive of his blood. (Demiromantic, Demisexual)
Robb Stark, Jock: Star quarterback of the Iron High football team. He's often been described by his peers as a playful and tough-loving individual. He shares his territorial sense with his cousin, Cregan, defending his name with pride while also befriending anyone, no matter how different they are from him. (Demiromantic, Demisexual)
Jon Snow, Middle-Grounded: Step-brother to the Starks, apart of the Iron High poetry club. He's often been described by his peers as mysterious and mildly-aggravating. To be honest, he dances around clubs and tries to find an after school activity that "speaks to him." He knows nothing about poetry, but he continues to go to the meetings merely to seem edgy, “deep”, and mysterious, which pisses off Aemond Targaryen. (Straight)
Brandon Stark, Nerd: Organizer of the Iron High eSports team. He's often been described by his peers as self-reserved and passionate. After losing his ability to walk, he needed to feel involved in something. He Twitch streams in his spare time, mostly practicing for tournaments with his friends on the team. He grows insecure over his loss of feeling in his legs and feel mildly pathetic, but can't bring himself to admit it. (Straight, Demisexual)
Arya Stark, Sporty: Star batter of the Iron High softball team. She’s often been described by her peers as competitive and passionate. She finds herself making small things a competition, urging to win and prove her worth to those around her. Though, underneath it all she’s struggling with romantic feelings, trying to identify her true sexuality and self. (Bicurious)
Sansa Stark, Popular: Running for student body president against Rhaena Targaryen. She’s often been described by her peers as sociable and kind. Though under her kind facade, she can be quite judgmental and catty when it comes to certain people. Definitely two faced on occasion. (Straight, Asexual)
Tumblr media
The Targaryen family is well known for their sly and intelligent bloodline, that also ties into the Velaryon line. They’re a mix between sociable and lacking desire for social interaction with those around them, tending to go about tasks that test their smarts rather than their athletic capabilities. They’re said to start arguments that they know they can win and play games of wits to get what they please, which causes them to butt heads with the Lannisters. They can be seen as almost snake like. Each Targaryen child owns their own reptile, mostly based on personality. Their parents saw it as an outlet to keep responsibility and build emotional connections since most Targaryen children are neglected by their parents, and they can be seen as undesirable from time to time, which makes them lack friends.
main characters.
Aemond Targaryen, Mildly Popular: Though he isn’t apart of any specific activities or extracurricular activities, he can be seen with his siblings on most occasions. He’s often described by his peers as sly and cocky. People think they’re friends with him, but he truly as no interest in them and doesn’t remember their names. You can find him with Helaena, helping her with tutoring students, or with Aegon as his designated driver. He spends his time studying when not looking after his blood. They’re very kind souls, open to new things that’ll test their limits. They tend to become competitive at times, striving to please and be the best they can, though sometimes they can’t control themselves and sometimes people can get hurt. You often see them around the Stark kids, usually play wrestling with one another. The Lannister family are well known for their pride and riches, their children spoiled rotten and blessed with beauty as well. Though they aren’t very physically active, they make up for it with their manipulative and convincing personas. It’s known that if you challenge an Lannister to a battle of wits and cleverness, you will come out a loser. That is, unless you’re a Targaryen. It’s hard to match the passive aggressive personality of a Lannister as well as their ability to masterfully lie to those around them. Though, the Lannister children face abandonment issues and a craving for their father’s approval after their mother’s passing. So, it leaves them lashing out on those around them.
