Kind of surprised I haven’t seen anyone talking about this bit because I think it really illustrates the ways in which Heaven / the Metatron emotionally manipulates the angels and it’s also the first time we seen the Archangels kind of afraid.
It shows how Heaven is a system/organization that keeps control of everyone by having no clearcut rules or rules that are constantly changing seemingly arbitrarily or on the whims of those at the top.
the best way to keep someone under control is by keeping them in a constant state of uncertainty, keeping them guessing whether they have done something wrong or not, whether they might need to atone for something they might or might not have done wrong, whether punishment might be coming or not.
And of course the Metatron keeps it that way - he doesn’t answer the question, simply tells them that it "remains to be seen"
Tumblr media
unclear rules also mean anything can suddenly be made into an offense, like "asking a few questions" or disagreeing with certain policies...

Saraquael's hoverchair is how she goes everywhere in style. On Earth, it's disguised as a wheelchair, and she can miracle ramps wherever she needs them. Nothing is going to get in her way. You have to wonder what her hoverchairs of past millennia looked like. Did it have rockets on them when she was out there building the stars?
We are accepting applications through the 19th of November. Yes, I know I said 16th before, but I was looking at the wrong month and I like ending things on the weekend.

[*Good Omens s2 & Murder Mysteries spoilers: read as your own risk]
In Good Omens s2, the Extreme Sanction (being erased from the Book of Life, which doesn't simply make you dead, but makes it so that you never even existed in the first place), is a punishment so cruel that it reminded me of something that triggers Lucifer's Fall in one of Neil Gaiman's other stories: Murder Mysteries.
This story is narrated by the embodiment of God's Vengeance, the angel Raguel. He recounts how a long time ago, in the Silver City (Heaven), before the Fall, a "wrong thing" occured: the very first murder.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll let you find out the exact details on your own if you want to read the story, but the important part here is that Lucifer helps Raguel in his investigation to find the culprit and that once the culprit is found, he is completely erased from existence. Lucifer witnesses this punishment and becomes the first angel to ever shed tears, empathizing with the culprit's fate. He believes the punishment (a life for a life) was unjust because the murderer did not know any better (it was the very first murder in History after all, and the very first time an angel died) and only wanted to put an end to his pain; and more importantly, "he loved".
Tumblr media
This reinforces his doubts and is implied to be the reason why he would later Fall. We also learn that God was behind this and wanted to traumatize Lucifer.
Tumblr media
While we don't have much information on Lucifer's Fall in Good Omens, I'd like to imagine that something similar happened to GO!Lucifer.
In MM, the punishment was the complete destruction of the culprit, but the Extreme Sanction introduced in GOS2 is even worse than that (complete destruction that also destroys all traces of your existence through space AND time). Moreover, Crowley confirmed angels knew about it, although most of them (including him) thought it was just a fictional, cautionary tale that the hierarchy used to scare young Angels.
I don't think it would be unlikely for GO!Lucifer to have been among those who knew this particular sanction was not just an empty threat, and to have been the first one to call it unjust to God's face.

i think saraquael knows more than they let on. when they mentioned to crowley that they had worked together on the nebula when he was an angel they didn't seem at all surprised that he doesn't remember. more like they expected it. and as a pretty high ranking angel who was part of the trial to erase gabriel's memory they would probably knows about crowley's memory having been erased as well. it seems more like a test to me? maybe to see if he's starting to remember? maybe there is something specific they don't want him to remember?
and when the metatron shows up it's almost like saraquael recognizes him? while michael is telling him to get out they look at them like "shut up don't you know who you're talking to? show some respect, this could get you in trouble"
also since crowley is the only other person to recognize him immediately maybe that says something about their ranks? i'm not sure what kind of angel saraquael is exactly and we obviously don't know more about crowley besides "a throne or a dominion or above"
what does it mean? does it even mean anything? i don't know

I knew that the name Saraqael was familiar to me. Spelled differently - as "Saraquael" - it's also the name of a character from Neil Gaiman's short story "Murder Mysteries."
(some details under the cut)
Without spoiling it too much, it's about two strangers - one younger, one older - meeting in Los Angeles, and about angels before the Beginning, including pre-Fall Lucifer. It's a story about murder, and love. It's about God's Ineffable Plan, too, in a way.
It's dark, but worth a read.

Season 3 Bingo card even though literally nothing has been said about it except maybe a vague Jesus plot because I can’t enjoy this show normally
I know half of these are literally just wishful thinking but here I am anyway praying for Apollo and his Dodgeball of Prophecy

So I was rewatching Good omens and I realized something.
Season 2 brings up Memory. A lot
Specifically Crowleys memory
In every episode something is said about it and I find this really interesting
I’m only going to bring up what I think are major, I want to note there are more instances than this. This is gonna be messy and a little disorganized since I’m just throwing my words on this post as I think of them and read the episode transcripts but I had to write it out.
In Episode 1 we see pre-fall Crowley and are introduced to our amnesiac archangel. This will be important later
We don’t see much of Crowleys memory loss in this episode but the biggest example I could find was the way Beelzebub had said Extreme Sanctions after Crowley misunderstood
It was as if they were expecting him to remember
In Episode 2 we get the first blatant hint of Crowleys memory loss
When Gabriel said he couldn’t remember, Crowley doesn’t say “Well try anyway”
He says “Yes you can.”
Crowley knew Gabriel could remember, he knew he could make himself remember. As if he knew it from experience.
Also in this episode we get Crowleys “I’m a demon, I lied.” As well as several other instances where he lies in this episode.
I also feel like his “Lonliness” is important to point out, because I feel like that goes much much deeper than “[I’m on] my side”
In Episode 3 we get Crowley and Gabriel’s Conversation about “Gravity”
Crowley knows what gravity is on a base level. But he says “I don’t remember” when asked why gravity exists and proceeds to give a very nondescript explanation
Now for Episode 4. This episode is actually what triggered me to start looking for these instances.
Because of Furfur
Near the end of the episode when Furfur enters the dressing room he mentions that him and Crowley were directly next to eachother during the Great War, as well as the fact Crowley used to jump on his back “Like a little monkey in a waistcoat”
And Crowley didn’t remember
All he remembered was going to war
Why does Furfur — A demon — remember but Crowley doesn’t?
In Episode 5 we get one of the most crucial ‘memory’ scenes imo
The aftermath of Crowley threatening Gabriel
When Gabriel tells Crowley “It hurts to remember, my head isn’t built for that” Crowley replies with “I know, do it anyway”
Again it sounds like Crowley is speaking from experience
The most important quote to me though is when Crowley says “I know, looking at where the furniture isn’t.”
Because after the fact he proceeds to ask Gabriel if he wants a hot chocolate
This wasn’t a sympathetic action. It was Empathetic.
He feels for Gabriel, he knows what it’s like to not know
Finally in Episode 6 we get context.
This is where the whole amnesiac archangel comes into play.
Before I get into that though I want to bring up Crowleys meeting with Saraquael. Because something interesting stood out to me while reading her voicelines. After Crowley asks “Do we know eachother?” Saraquael says “When you were an Angel” and pauses before she says the following voiceline “We worked together on the horsehead nebula”
Those were two different sentences. I’m definitely looking too far into this but to me it sounded like she knew he wouldn’t remember so she gave unnecessary context. This as well as the fact she didn’t respond when Crowley essentially said he didn’t remember her.
Back to my original point though, during this episode we finally learn how (and why) Gabriel lost his memories. Angels can remove their own memories as well as have their memories removed by other angels.
But clearly Furfur still has his memories, as well as Shax, Dagon, and Beelzebub
And anytime Crowley mentions “remembering” something it’s post-fall
Adding on Neil’s post about “Crowley not being a reliable narrator on his fall” as well as showing Crowley pre-fall in episode one leads me to believe there’s some foreshadowing in there and something happened to Crowleys memory.
But What?
Why doesn’t he remember?
What did they do to him?

in s2 episode 1 of good omens the line "a material object? in heaven?" is said by saraquael according to the captions. but it sounds like uriel's voice and it makes more sense for it to be said by uriel. am i missing something or is this one of the issues with the subtitles that hasn't been fixed yet?
It's definitely Uriel saying it. (You can see Uriel's mouth moving on the In Heaven.)
Sorry, yes, that's one that wasn't fixed.

What about Saraquael's hoverchair? Does that count as a vehicle?
From mod ScrapHeapChallenge, who uses a wheelchair: yes I'd LOVE to see some about her powerchair, in fact I had ideas in that direciton too - I'd love it if more people did
although I would like to stipulate that if the writer is not disabled themself, that I'd like to beta read any that involve disability devices to check for sensitivity just in case
like write about it, but make sure we don't perpetuate ableist tropes
eg stuff like Saraqael feeling miserable about having to use a powerchair or wishing she could walk more - that's a complete nope, or anything about "wheelchair BOUND" or "CONFINED to a wheelchair" - both nopes - "Wheelchair user" is correct. and in Saraqael's case, she and the actress are ambultory wheelchair users like myself - so we can stand and move around a bit

Crowley and the Fall: Looking where the furniture isn't
Furfur, 1941: "We were in the same legion. Just before the fall. Doing dubious battle on the plains of Heaven. Remember?"
Crowley: "I remember going into battle. I don't remember being there with you."
Um... does Crowley's professed memory track with what we know about his fall? Setting aside for a moment that he doesn't remember Furfur - I mean, who just casually *saunters* into battle, really? In theory, it sounds like Crowley must have, but that's not what his "I remember going into battle" sounds like. It's been said before, but something about the circumstances of Crowley's fall (what little we know of it, at least) doesn't smell right. What we know is:
First, Crowley asked questions.
These questions antagonized the Metatron.
At some point, having gotten no satisfactory answers, Crowley began "sauntering vaguely downward," hanging out with the wrong crowd out of...boredom? Boredom with making nebulae? Nahhh. "Food hadn't been that good lately" (ahem, angels don't eat) sounds a lot like a euphemism for not enjoying the things you used to enjoy anymore. Ennui, maybe depression. Comes of your work feeling pointless, when you think you've been contributing to something big and meaningful that turns out to just be fancy wallpaper, something that was always meant to get torn down eventually anyway (ugh, Crowley, you and I should go get a whiskey after work sometime).
Eventually, that "wrong crowd" becomes a legion marching into battle on the plains of heaven.
Lucifer's side loses, and Crowley finds himself "suddenly doing a million lightyear freestyle dive into a pool of boiling sulphur." Funny that whilst talking to no one but himself in the bar in season 1, Crowley characterizes his Fall as "sudden" with no mention of a precipitating rebellion or battle at all. Either way, it seems like there'd be a lot of distance for him to cover to get from "I'm feeling profoundly disappointed; what once sustained me has lost its flavor" to "I'm going to violently overthrow the system and put these other guys in charge." Especially for the one demon we know of who still appeals directly to God.
Anyway, that half-baked word casserole is my basis for theorizing that Crowley did ask questions, but he never violently rebelled. "Going into battle" is the sort of thing one does with some conviction, not in an attitude of casual, sauntering disaffection. And even if he was hanging out with the wrong crowd, Crowley has never been a mindless follower: he'd be just as likely to question and critique Lucifer/Satan as the Almighty Herself. If Crowley did fight in the war (big if, if you ask me), I suspect it was on the side of Heaven. Then at some point his memory was tampered with to make him forget which side he'd been on. The fog of war and all that...
One last thought on this topic: Saraquael. She claims to have worked with Crowley on the horsehead nebula; moments later, we see on heavenly instant replay that she was the angel tapping at their phone to look for Gabriel's memory so that it could be wiped. Was her question actually meant to test Crowley, to see how much he'd managed to remember?
Saraquael, only angel to recognize Metatron when he strolls into the bookshop - are you the one who performed the wipe of Crowley's memory on Metatron's behalf?
I haven't learned yet how to get good screenshots, but if you can, hit pause on Crowley's face just before the electrical sounds go off in heaven after Aziraphale has blown up his halo. He's turned around from the screens to look directly at Saraquael in this shot. His eyebrows are raised and we can see his narrowed eyes clearly through his sunglasses. He KNOWS.
