dude i dont think people that dont watch x files understand that its not just 'that show about aliens'. the x files is fucking insane. i mean, yeah, theres episodes about aliens but theres also episodes about:
cockroaches, robots, shit, and entomologists. or, more specifically, a town thats been infested with cockroaches by the government and is being observed by an entomologist named bambi. and in this town, people are dying in ways that appear to be caused by the cockroaches but really its just an allergic reaction, an aneurysm, drugs, and a heart attack. and then a fucking manure plant blows up and covers everyone in cow shit. oh and also some of the cockroaches are robotic, so :)
a man whose shadow vaporises people. thats- thats pretty much it.
a prehistoric lake monster, moby dick, and the search for the truth (or a white whale, whats the difference?) the lake monster is eating people and dogs :(, mulder and scully get trapped on a rock in the 'middle' of the lake, and the monster is really just an alligator.
cher, frankenstein's monster, and peanut butter. this episode's in black and white btw. someones going around and hotboxing peoples houses with animal tranqs and then impregnating peoples wives. this 'someone' is actually a man whose been mutated due to experiments done on him by his father. mulder and scully take this guy to a cher concert at the end. (one of the best scenes, iykyk)

Hey Mike,
I noticed the Scully poster in Riley's room as well as you having Fight the future as one of the films that are part of your Midnight Club companion list, so I was just wondering what your favourite X-Files episodes are? Or favourite moments that you think back to? Or just anything about the show really, it doesn't get enough love nowadays even though it changed modern TV in so many ways so it would be cool to see you talk about it and maybe get people into it :)
Oh I am a huge fan. That series really shaped me. I started watching it when the first season began airing, I was a freshman in high school. It affected me on a genetic level. My favorite episode of all time is "Jose Chung's From Outer Space". That's one of my favorite episodes of any television show, I think. Then I'd have to say "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose", "Bad Blood", and "Triangle". I loved all of it, but I had a slight preference for the standalone episodes as opposed to the mythology. Loved it all though.

As of March 2023, The X-Files is the 110th Most Popular TV show on IMDB.
Unlike the Nielsen Ratings, these scores aren’t set in stone. Anyone can make an IMDB account and contribute their ratings, so if there’s anything you disagree with on the list, go represent your opinion!
Tumblr media
All statistics from IMDB, all graphs created by me ✨
The data was obtained in March 2023, since IMDB ratings are subject to change, these findings may not be accurate in the future
However, with each episode currently having around 5k ratings, it’s likely not to vary too much.
Trends and Points of Interest✨
Season Three had both the highest rated episode (Clyde Bruckman at 9.2, tied with Bad Blood) and the lowest rated episode (Teso Dos Bichos at 5.9)
Despite being very high on the Nielsen charts, El Mundo Gira is one of the least popular episodes.
Season Three was the most featured on the “Most Popular” list (731, War of the Coprophages, Jose Chung, Paper Clip, Clyde Bruckman)
Despite being a beloved season, Season Four appeared the most on the “Least Popular” list (Teliko, The Field Where I Died, El Mundo Gira, Kaddish)
Here’s the full breakdown for anyone who’s curious to see where their favorite episode lands!
I hate math, but as far as my calculations go-
Mean: 7.81 Median: 7.8 Mode: 7.3 Range: 3.3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anything that shocked you?
1) I can’t believe Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man is so high
2) People are sleeping on Nothing Lasts Forever (it has one of the best MSR scenes!)
3) I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I don’t hate Fight Club. I’ve always liked Kathy Griffin

top 5 txf episodes
I loved this prompt but also it was very hardddd, I mostly chose ones that I never shut up about lmao
"Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose"
This is my girl, this is my ride or die. I was in the Northeast when the first category 1 hurricane hit in like 50 years and I had to drive through the outer bands in a rental car with a spare tire on it and when we got home I made everyone watch this because it's my comfort episode that accompanies me through moments of triumph as well as crisis. Scully befriending the depressed old man psychic is such a great storyline for Scully and this whole ep really lets her shine. Scully has such a kindness and playfulness that she typically only shows with Mulder, but her fondness for the deadpan comedy stylings of Bruckman made her fond of him and her heartbreak when he dies is such a perfect scene. Also I just think of her smile and "there are hits and there are misses, and then there are misses :)" a lot.
2. "Leonard Betts"
If someone asked me what is the episode of The X Files that feels like the quintessential episode, I would say "Leonard Betts", which I think some would think as a weird choice. But this episode is what this show was at the height of its popularity to me. It aired after the Superbowl and the cold open is one of its best with a beheading, followed by the corpse waltzing right out of the morgue. The banter between Mulder and Scully is top notch and full of perfect Mulder quips ("blinked or winked?") and incredulous Scully deliveries ("Mulder, they're worms") and even if the scientific explanation of "evolutionary cancer" is deeply ludicrous from a scientific perspective, it is a great x-file. And the ENDING of finding out Scully has cancer is such a gut punch, just a phenomenal hour of tv.
3. "Paper Clip"
This is on here because I love the Anasazi/The Blessing Way/Paper Clip trilogy so much and I have to shout it out. I will always cape for early mythology because I think the fact that became a muddled mess makes people forget how damn good it was to begin with. So much of the early character work was done in these episodes and they're so compelling. Bringing in real history with Operation Paper Clip and connecting Mulder's father to the people Mulder is trying to investigate was a great move (that they didn't totally deliver on imo, but "sins of the father" is a great idea at the very least) and expanding the scope and complicity in the conspiracy really put what Mulder and Scully were up against in perspective. Mulder relenting and choosing to go out of hiding for Scully so she could see her sister and their conversation in the hospital room after Melissa died are some of my favorite moments of the show.
4. "Folie a Deux"
It's hard to pick a Vince episode and this could just as easily be "Pusher" (which was the episode that got me to seriously ship msr) or "Bad Blood" or almost any other episode he wrote, but "Folie a Deux" is special to me. Mulder's mental wellness and people's belief that he's crazy has been an angle that has always been present and Vince framing this as a joint delusion on Mulder and Scully's part is so fascinating and a fantastic bit or writing to me. Mulder is so discredited and dismissed in this episode and the only person who listens to him is Scully and that's a perfect distillation of their dynamic and the show itself. Also the episode is Marxist to me.
5. "Jose Chung's From Outer Space"
I thought to myself "well I can't have two Darin episodes on here" but…of course I can! This is one of the greatest episodes of TV of all time. Not just of sci-fi or network or pre-00s TV, of all TV ever made. This is one of the episodes that sets The X Files apart from its clones or other cop procedural shows and it's that it can switch genres and tones and bring this post-modern, storyline hopping masterpiece out and no one thinks twice about its place in the show or season. A lot gets said about how funny it is and the melancholic tone Darin brings to his writing, but I find myself so impressed by they way the writing and directing work to make the timeline jumping work and not end up confusing the viewer. I'll eventually talk about this more, but the shot construction to create anchor points between a re-enactment and the scene of the narrator telling this story to Mulder and Scully is so great.

Hi Anika! What are your top 10 or top 20 favorite TXF episodes? If you have time, maybe you can briefly say why you like them? I love hearing your thoughts.
Hi anon! There are so many good episodes. I have a few core favorites and a few that seem to change around a bit. They're in no particular order - and my thoughts are basically "Mulder and Scully are hot/cute/adorable" 😁
The Pine Bluff Variant - it's so good. I feel like it's underrated. Mulder trying to keep a secret from Scully! Mulder running! Scully setting his finger! Her following him!! It also has the whole "evil government" aspect to it.
Wetwired - another underrated episode! It's a monster-of-the-week episode but with mytharc elements. Scully being affected and becoming paranoid is amazing. And Mrs. Scully is in the episode too, of course!
Bad Blood - I mean that's a given, right? I like the comedy of it and I love the whole he said/she said spiel. It's a very fun episode.
Rain King - another fun episode. As a huge rom-com fan this one has to make my list. It's cute. I love Mulder and Scully being mistaken for a couple by *everyone*. Not to mention the room sharing and Scully's speech.
Pilot - I think this episode sets the show up so well. Mulder and Scully as baby agents meeting for the first time and bonding and clashing immediately. What's not to love?
Redux 2: I can't tell you why I love this episode so much. Or the whole three parter really. All I know is that for a while when I was a kid I watched it almost daily. It's Mulder crying at her hospital bed and both of them fighting their own fight and Scully going into remission.
Colony/End Game - I often forget about this episode but the mytharc in the early seasons was really good. Fake Mulder hurting Scully and then real Mulder choosing Scully over (fake) Samantha is so much drama and I LOVE it. The whole Mulder and his family part is heartbreaking.
Anasazi/The Blessing Way/Paper Clip - I cannot tear these episodes apart. They belong together. From Mulder being drugged to Scully shooting him and driving gim across country, being a total badass, to thinking he died and then losing her sister. There's so much here.
Squeeze - I just enjoy season one so much. They're all comfort episodes to me (except Space. That episode can fuck off). I love the case, I love Scully's answer when Colton asks her whose side she's on. Scully saying Mulder is territorial. I know it's not a two-parter per se, but I have to mention Tooms here, too, cause technically I like that one even better (that MSR moment in the car alone!).
Memento Mori - it's as heartbreaking as it is brilliant. Gillian is amazing in it and Scully choosing to fight is everything to me. As is that hug at the end. And Mulder watching her walk away. That one's just sad.
Demons - one of my absolute favorites. Yes, psrt of it is Mulder being a burrito at the beginning and him being insanely hot in jeans and a white t-shirt. But I also like seeing how far he's willing to go for this quest. Scully being worried sick (and she IS sick in late season 4 😭) is a bonus.
Je Souhaite - another fun episode. No one is dying. Well, Anson Stokes dies, but he doesn't count. Scully and her invisible man are so precious. The ending of course. Mulder being a sweetie, asking for world peace and then looking for Scully.
Detour - I love the case and suspense with person after person going missing. The beginning with them and the other two agents in the car is so funny. The singing of course and the whole raining sleeping bags thing. My personal favorite though is Mulder jumping into that hole to be with Scully.
I'm gonna stop here and do a few honorable mentions: The Jersey Devil, Dreamland 1+2, Jose Chung's From Outer Space, Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose, War of the Coprophages, Ice, Pusher(!) and Aqua Mala.
This got long. This show has way too many good episodes! I know I forgot several that I love.

4. Maggie Scully or Melissa Scully?
there is not one good parent in this show until m/s become parents and that’s that on that. melissa scully was so sweet and on god. she did not deserve to die :/ they rly just had to take all of scully’s happiness like that huh ):
9. The Lone Gunmen or Walter Skinner?
hagjkfdshgkjafd LOOK avatar and zero sum had me feelin some kinda way BUT. the lone gunmen are so good. they’re objectively the Good characters in this show. frohike makes his own salsa and threatens people with spatulas. byers just wants to be in love. langly has That hair. they’re icons.
14. Favorite episode(s)? Why?
i love so many so im gonna limit it for the sake of my hands BUT i can and WILL write ESSAYS about every single one of these episodes no cap
1. jose chung’s from outer space: i literally cannot recall the plot of this episode but i LOVE the way they did it. i love stories that unfold through narration and bro i LOVE to laugh and this episode gave me both of those things!! i love seeing unreliable narrator scenarios and the way people portrayed mulder will live with me forever. the alien smoking a cigarette. mulder eating an entire pie.  the proper authorities showed up with a couple of men in black. one of them was disguised as a woman, but wasn’t pulling it off. like, her hair was red but it was a little too red, you know? and the other one… the tall, lanky one… his face was so blank and expressionless. he didn’t even seem human. i think he was a mandroid.
2. clyde bruckman’s final repose: this episode!!!!!!!!! i dont even know what to say about this episode. i’ll start with the humour as all of these will contain. subtle humour is. the highest form of comedy and this episode pull’s it off so WELL. then the writing!!!!!!!!! every time i watch this episode my brain expands idk man im gonna go watch it again after this on god
3. bad blood: this is the EXACT same reason i love jose chung’s from outer space so much EXCEPT we get how mulder and scully perceive each other
4. musings of a cigarette smoking man: look i know this is Controversial bc of the cigarette smoking man but. idk man. u know that feeling when u watch a tv show or a movie and it shows two independent story lines and at the end it all starts coming together and ur just like “!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” ? that’s what watching this episode made me feel. also. mulder’s first words were “jfk” so go ahead and jot that down
5. grotesque: dude this episode legitimately scared me. like terrified me. i slept with my lamp on no cap. idk if this is a favourite or just scarred me but

hello! I want to rewatch some of the x files (keyword being some, like a couple episodes a season. I don’t have time for 9 seasons and 2 movies lol) but I’ve only seen the show once and was wondering if you or anyone who sees this ask had certain episodes to recommend from each season that would capture the essence of the show/overall plot? thanks!
hi! i might be the wrong person to ask for this lol because my view of the show is so varied. if you're looking for mostly plot stuff, you could always stick to mytharc, but i personally think some of the best episodes are NOT mytharc. so i'm gonna make a very subjective list of the episodes i think are most important--some because of mytharc and some because they're just fun. i'll put a * by mytharc stuff and bold some that are my personal favorites, but i'll really try to stick to the standouts. anyways!

I was tagged by @myellenficent thank you! 💖💖
rules: pick 5 shows, then answer the following questions. don’t cheat. tag some people.
1. Twin Peaks 2. The Sopranos 3. Fleabag 4. Mad Men 5. The X-Files
who is your favorite character in 2? Because I’m incapable of picking just one lol my faves are Tony Soprano, Carmela Soprano, Silvio Dante, and Dr. Melfi. The Sopranos does a great job of making you love and despise all of its characters lmao
who is your least favorite character in 1? Leo Johnson and Hank Jennings, also really don’t care for John Justice Wheeler. Literally had to look up John Justice Wheeler’s name for this because I forgot lol, he’s so irrelevant
what is your favorite episode of 4? Mad Men: Season 1 Ep. 13 “The Wheel” / Season 3 Ep. 13 “Shut the door. Have a Seat” / Season 6 Ep. 8 “The Crash.” There’s sooooo many good ones
what is your favorite season of 5? Season 1, Seasons 3 & 5 have a lot of my fave episodes as well
who is your favorite couple in 3? Fleabag x The Priest 💔
who is your favorite couple in 2? None, they’re all in unhealthy relationships
what is your favorite episode of 1? Twin Peaks: 1x01 “Pilot” / 1x03 “Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer” / 1x04 “Rest in Pain” / honestly the entire first season / 2x15 “Lonely Souls” / 2x17 “Arbitrary Law” / 2x30 “Beyond Life and Death / 3x03 / 3x08 / 3x16 -  so basically most of the same ones! 😊
what is your favorite episode of 5? X-Files: 1x01 “Pilot” / 1x02 “Deep Throat” / 1x04 “Conduit” / 3x04 “Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" / 4x10 “Paper Hearts” / 5x12 “Bad Blood”
what is your favorite season of 2? All of them are perfect. Season 4 lacks a bit, but other than that I love them all pretty equally
how long have you watched 1? Since 2014 and my life has never been the same (in the best way possible)
how did you become interested in 3? My bf’s sister recommended it to me
who is your favorite actor in 4? Jon Hamm
which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5? 1 - Twin Peaks hits me emotionally like no other show - it’s indescribable
which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3? Twin Peaks because there’s more episodes
if you could be anyone from 4, who would you be? Roger Sterling
would a crossover between 3 and 4 work? Probably not, but I’d love to see it anyway
pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple? Dr. Jacoby and Nadine
overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5? 3 (Fleabag) djshfsjhfkdhj but I love The X-Files’ storyline too
which has better theme music, 2 or 4? I love both of the theme songs for these shows, they fit perfectly. So both!
I tag: @byrnedavid @sybbie-crawley @cinesolo @cillianmurphy if you want to!

From the X-Files asks:
N. Favorite episode(s)? Why?
The answer to this question is different at any time it’s asked. The X-Files is a show blessed with many great episodes. That said, episodes that I always enjoy coming back to are:
Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose is odd in all the right ways, and Peter Boyle was a fantastic guest actor (with the Emmy to prove it).
Tumblr media
Beyond the Sea is emotionally riveting because it’s an X-File with a personal twist. And it’s a transitional point for the character of Scully (and the actress playing her), coming into her own.
Tumblr media
all things. I’m sorry I can’t help but love this love letter to Scully (and Mulder) that barely fits into the show’s normal style but is so lovely and thoughtful.
Tumblr media
Colony and End Game, back when the mythology sort of made sense and the show was starting to get crazy budgets. They are also, apparently, episodes with a very low gif content on tumblr. I couldn’t find one of that icy submarine.
Tumblr media
And others that I am not taking the time to find gifs for but that I love as much as the ones with gifs: Je Souhaite (a perfectly arced episode), Bad Blood (a perfect tale that couldn’t have happened without a writer who knew the show and characters very well - thank you, Vince Gillian), Triangle (I can barely see anything in it it’s so dark, but I can see enough to know its good), Pusher (OMG!), Quagmire (poor Queequeg), The Goldberg Variation (don’t get me started - I love this goofy episode that has deep undertones), Irresistible (creeptastic but wonderful), This (oh hello, later season episode), and Redux I and II (surprisingly emotional and cohesive for mytharc episodes).
O. Favorite MSR moments?
If it’s a cop-out to say see scenes from all of the above episodes (and the ones in my list of favorite episodes), then I am copping out. 😁😁

Fic:  Situation Normal
For the Fic Is Medicine Challenge at @xfficchallenges.  Crossover with Criminal Minds.  Set during Season 11, post-makeup, pre-pregnancy.  NSFW.
"Hey."  There's a hand on her shoulder.  Scully looks up blearily.  It's Garcia, the computer specialist who's all blonde curls and the kind of kung-fu that would make the Gunmen either weep or fall in love.  "We're headed to the bar.  You want to come?"  Her voice lilts up sweetly at the end.  Her eyes are soft behind her cat-eye glasses.  This case has been a nightmare at every turn, but it's been nice to work with women.  She misses Monica.  Garcia waits patiently for her answer as Scully reels her mind back to the subject at hand: a drink.
"Yeah," Scully says.  Her voice catches on the word like she hasn't spoken in a week.  She clears her throat.  "Yeah," she says again.  "That sounds...honestly, that sounds fucking great."
Garcia laughs.  "Yeah," she agrees.  "It does."  She holds out her hand.  Scully takes it and lets Garcia pull her up and lead her to the elevator.  JJ, Tara, and Alvez are there already, slouched against the walls like they can't hold themselves up.  Scully feels the same.
"Hey, you're coming with us," Alvez says, managing a smile.
"Wouldn't miss it," Scully tells them.
"We're glad to have you," Tara says.
"I'd like to say this isn't something we do all the time," JJ says, her arms crossed, "but our cases usually require a little downtime."
"Whiskey's cheaper than therapy," Alvez jokes.  "But, uh, don't worry.  We do that too.  Usually first."
"Yeah," Scully says, "me too."  She tries to smile back at him, but it feels lopsided.  "Where are the others?"
"Prentiss and Rossi are with your partner," JJ says, looking at her phone.  "They'll meet us there."
"They do all that bigshot stuff," Garcia says.  Penelope, that's her name.
"Rossi will try to buy your drinks," Tara says.  "It's kind of his thing."
"Yeah, but he's written like six books," Alvez says.  "He's good for it.  You should let him buy your drinks."
"It's kind of his routine," Garcia confides.
"Good old Uncle Dave," Tara says.
"Good to know," Scully says.  She stretches.  "God, it's been a long week."
"We've really appreciated your help," JJ says.  "You and your partner - I don't know if we could have gotten through this one without you both."
"We were happy to help," Scully says.  "It's been nice to work in a team.  It's usually just the two of you."
"Ahhh," Garcia says knowingly.  "I'm imagining both of you crammed into a cozy little office.  Your eyes meet across a stack of reference books.  Sparks fly."
"You'll love this," Scully says.  "There's only one desk."
"That's perfect," Garcia says.
"How long have you been together?" Tara asks.
"Officially or unofficially?" Scully teases.  "God, it's been fifteen years, on and off.  And another ten years before that that we pretended nothing was going on."
"Delicious," Garcia proclaims.
"Hey, at least he understands the job," Tara says.
"That's the good news," Scully says.  "The bad news is he understands the job too well.  It's been difficult to tear him away from the job some years."
JJ laughs.  "It's a common problem."
They pile into a couple of cars.  It's not far to the bar.  When they walk in, Mulder is there.  He looks up from his beer and Scully can see his whole body relax.  He grins wearily at something that Rossi's saying.  Scully slides in next to him and he puts a warm hand on her knee.
"Hey," he says.  God, it's so stupid that after all these years that's still all he has to say and the rest of the world fades into the background.
"Hey, she says back.
"Sparks," Garcia says.
"I see 'em," JJ confirms.
A server comes around and takes their orders.  They chat idly until the drinks arrive.  Scully takes her vodka soda and squeezes the lime slice into it.  Garcia and Tara and JJ and Alvez all have frilly pink drinks with elaborate garnishes.  Garcia sticks the little paper umbrella from her drink into one of her hair buns.  Alvez carefully lodges his in the other bun.  Garcia smiles at him.
"How are you, Dana?" Rossi asks.
"Exhausted," Scully says.
"I think we all are," Emily says.  "Good work, everyone.  On the news tonight, they'll say we caught the Terror of the Potomac or whatever godawful name they gave her.  They'll make it sound simple.  But we know what it took.  I know how much time and energy it took and what you all gave up to make this happen.  I appreciate it all the more knowing what you could have spent your time on.  And we couldn't have done it without our friends from the Hoover Building."  She holds up her glass.  "To a team effort."
"To the team," they all echo.
"So what exactly is the X-Files?" Rossi asks, and Scully settles deep into her seat and sips at her drink.  Mulder chatters on like a pair of wind-up teeth, and she adds details where it's necessary.  She's happy just to lean against him and do her own commentary track.  The others seem fascinated.  They order more drinks.  They talk about Modell, about Tooms, about Pfaster, about the Eves: all the greatest serial-killing hits.  Scully talks about Clyde Bruckman and how he helped them catch the man behind the fortune teller murders.  Mulder mentions the convict who could walk through walls and the fast food employee who ate people's brains.  They manage not to sound completely out of this world, she thinks.  She hopes.
It's gruesome but satisfying to be able to discuss their accomplishments with people who understand.  The BAU runs down their own best-of or worst-of, depending on one's perspective.  To Scully, they're mostly run-of-the-mill nightmares.  The details change, but the horror at the core is the same.  She wonders idly how much their collective therapy bills run.  Given the lives they've saved, the government owes them.  But it's nice, being there with the rest of them.  It was a team effort.  She and Mulder have always been hemmed in by shadows, but the camaraderie of the team pushes the darkness back a little further.  They laugh together and the grimness of it all retreats.
"This was nice," Rossi says.  "I gotta tell you all that I gave the bar my credit card when we arrived, so you're free to go home whenever you feel fit to leave."
They all complain good-naturedly, but JJ's hiding a yawn and Garcia's leaning against Alvez.  At least Scully's nerves have stopped jangling at every sound.  Dissecting all the old cases helped.  Dissecting things always does.  But she's still beaten down after a case that took longer than she could really bear and hit harder than she's seen in a long time.  The unsub, as the BAU team insisted on calling their suspect, was a woman who drugged her victims, stalked them until they passed out, kidnapped them, drugged them again, and dismembered them, displaying their flayed skin and preserved body parts in shadowboxes from the local craft store.  The autopsy results showed that she had slowly drained their blood as they were conscious, slipping the razor under their skin as they bled out paralyzed on her table.  She'll be one of the demons who haunts Scully.  Scully imagines Mulder and the team feel the same.  But she feels better, having spent the time clearing the air.
Mulder drives home, his hand draped over the wheel.  Scully puts her hand on his thigh as they drive, reassuring herself with the warmth of him.
"It was a hell of a week," he says.
"It was a hell of a week," she agrees.  "I missed you."
"I missed you too," he says.  "It was like past life regression back to my profiler days."
"Before you met me," she says.
"Before I met you," he agrees.
She thinks of the lithe grace of him in his thirties, how much she wanted to unbutton his shirt and slide her hands inside it.  She would imagine it after the worst cases, some kind of solace after the psychic and physical devastation of carving out a safer, more just world.  It's a natural instinct, that urge for connection, but the Mulderness of him intensifies the feeling.  She can feel the hunger stirring inside her now.  If she's honest about it, it began the moment she saw him at the bar; she melted next to him like the ice in her glass.  She wants him touching her, inside her, the two of them pressed together until the dark behind her eyelids lights up with fireworks, and she's just relaxed enough from the night of drinking to ask for something she's rarely indulged in.
At a stoplight, she stretches out of her seat and presses a kiss to the underside of his jaw.  He takes his hand off the wheel and cups her breast.  She moans softly against his cheek. His neck is warm under her lips.  He dips his head to meet her mouth with his own, his tongue slipping against hers, asking a question she's always been glad to answer.  The light changes.  He breaks the kiss but keeps his hand on her breast, the other hand going to the wheel.
"Find somewhere to pull over," she murmurs.
"Really?"  The interrogative lift in his voice is ballasted by the rough weight of desire.  "We'll be home in an hour."
"I need you to fuck me now," she says.
"There's a park on the way to 95," he says.  "But we should probably make it quick."
"We can do that," she says.  She unbuttons her pants with one hand and uses her other hand to guide his fingers into her panties.
"Fuck, Scully," he says reverently.  He strokes her slowly as he drives, his fingers sliding up and down her folds.  She gasps and hums and arches against his touch, letting him feel and hear every spark and jolt of her pleasure.  He drives faster.  She has to remind him to take the turn that will get them to the park.  They find a dark parking lot.
"Mulder, we're the people we're usually chasing away," she murmurs, unbuckling her seatbelt and clambering into the back seat.  She's never had sex in this car before, and only vaguely remembers the person at the car dealership touting that the seats in this one could be reclined to almost horizontal.  She fumbles for the mechanism to lean the seat back.  It doesn't actually go to horizontal, but it's better than upright.  Mulder has followed her.  He presses against her ass, unsubtly frotting against her.  The urgency between them has never faded; the only thing about her that still feels young, she thinks with a smile.  She lies down in the seat and reaches for him, tugging at his shirt to pull him down over her.
They unbutton her shirt with feverish haste.  He drags her pants off and kisses his way up her thighs as he pulls down her panties, tossing them over his shoulder onto the dashboard.  She reaches up to undo his belt and he makes an impatient noise and pulls her up, taking her place in the seat as they contort around each other.  Together they make short work of his belt and zipper and he works his cock out through the fly of his boxers.  He's rigid as a pole, the tip of his cock gleaming in the diffuse glow of the streetlight across the parking lot.  Without a word, she straddles him, sinking down onto his cock and letting the way he fills her up push every other thought out of her brain.
They fuck like they're in heat.  It's primal.  It's noisy.  Every time he thrusts up into her, every time she grinds down against him, she feels a little better, a little wilder, a little more free.  She leans down and drags one of her breasts out of her bra, straining against the cup. She pushes her nipple deep into his mouth, aching for the friction of his tongue.  He has one hand reaching for her clit and the fingers of the other between her teeth as she cries out.  He's so solid inside her, his skin like hot silk as she tightens around him.  The rough pads of his fingers rub over and around her clit and she gasps, sucking the salt off his skin.  His teeth graze her nipple.  She's flinging herself down onto him, short sharp thrusts so that she doesn't hit her head against the roof.  Skinner already looks askance at them.  A sex-related concussion is the last thing she needs.  The first thing she needs is Mulder, all of him, deeper and harder and fuck, she's going to come, she's going to shake herself apart, she's going to swallow him whole and beg for more.
He lets her nipple slip out of his mouth.  "Come for me," he commands, and she keens around his fingers and lets go, her arms barely able to hold her up as her body quakes over and around him.  He shouts a wordless plea and jolts into her, both hands on her hips now, holding her tight against him as she spreads herself a little wider, trying to take him in even deeper.  The rapture on his face would put a saint to shame as he comes inside her, his thighs trembling, and she's never been more in love.
It takes them a moment to come back to themselves.  She can feel the liquid heat of their combined desire, the slippery way they slide against each other.  When she climbs off him, she has to retrieve her panties to dry herself off before she can put her pants back on.  She leaves the underwear off, discarded in the back seat.  The windows are fogged.  She uses her shirt sleeve to wipe them down.  Mulder tucks himself back into his pants but leaves his belt undone.  He's still wearing his shoes.  She laughs quietly.
"Hmm?" he says, smiling as he turns the car back on.
"All of it," she says, buckling her seatbelt over the still-undone buttons of her blouse.  Her hands are trembling too much.  She'll put herself back together as they drive.  "It seems like a strange way to deal with the stress of a case like this, but I know it's an instinct well within the normal parameters of healthy behavior."
"Feeling better?" he asks.
"I could use another dose," she says.  "It's not exactly a non-addictive option, but it does help me sleep."
"I'm sure by the time we get home, I'll be able to administer one," he says.
"I can always count on you, Mulder," she says.
He holds her hand across the console.  "We're going to have sweet dreams, Scully."

If you frequent the X-Files newsgroup, you know that there are some threads that just won't die. People complain because Scully never drives or because Mulder always drops his gun. Here are the lists of episodes where many of these things occur -- so you can see for yourself whether or not any of these complaints/observations are valid.

Mulder seems to be fond of porn
·  Jersey Devil - Scully catches Mulder looking at a model in a 'girlie' magazine, which he attempts to cover up by saying she was an abductee.
·  Beyond the Sea - Scully tells him "Last time you were that engrossed, it turned out you were reading the Adult Video News"
·  Blood - Mulder tells the Lone Gunmen that he must have overlooked their August issue because it arrived on the same day as his issue of "Celebrity Skin".
·  One Breath - Can't tell for sure, but what was that tape he was watching when he gets the call that Scully has reappeared?
·  Excelsius Dei - Mulder claims that the tape Scully found in the VCR wasn't his, and she replies that she put it back in the drawer with the rest of the tapes that aren't his
·  Paper Clip - Mulder tells Frohike that the he will have to wait a little bit longer for Mulder's video collection (implying that Mulder will leave it to him when he dies).
·  D.P.O. - Upon finding Darren's copy of Playboy, Mulder comments (at Scully's jibe) that he already has that issue
·  Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose - While attempting to find Claude Dukenfield's body, Bruckman casually comments to Mulder that while there are worse ways to go, he can't think of anything less dignified than auto-erotic asphyxiation. Mulder, confused by this turn of topic, asks why Bruckman is telling him this, to which Bruckman quickly replies that it's none of his business and to forget that he mentioned it. While I doubt Mulder will really meet his end this way, I think that Bruckman choosing this way to rattle Mulder is a semi-reference to Mulder's porn-habit.
·  Nisei - after asking Scully to watch a video "that came in the mail", she mentions that "it's not your usual brand of entertainment".
·  Pusher - after being fitted with the 2-lux video camera, Mulder asks "Think I can get the Playboy Channel?"
·  Small Potatoes - Eddie (as the faux Mulder) finds an answering machine message to Mulder from a phone-sex company
·  Chinga - Mulder is watching a suspiciously pornographic-sounding tape titled "Alien Probe"
·  All Souls - Mulder hurries Scully so he can return to "A Decade of Dirty Delinquents"
·  The End - so it isn't porn, but it is rather telling when the mind-reading kid informs Mulder that "You've got a dirty mind"
·  Dreamland I - Mulder settles down for a good night's sleep to the soothing sounds of the porn station SIZL
·  Dreamland II - Mulder's long-lost bedroom is filled with boxes of files and at least one copy of "PlayPen".
·  The UnNatural - Mulder mentiones his "obscenely overdue triple-X bill" during his list of things that baseball makes you forget
·  Hollywood A.D. - while talking about ambient sounds we usually tune out, Chuck Burks mentions the sound of "Mulder's porn tapes on pause". (Season 1: 2 / Season 2: 3 / Season 3: 4 / Season 4: 1 / Season 5: 2 / Season 6: 3 / Season 7: 1)
Danny & Chuck Burks Sightings! While not as well-known as the Lone Gunmen, Mulder does have other friends that he calls on to help him out from time-to-time. Mulder's oft-called but never seen friend Danny has helped Mulder and Scully through many-a-case. Here's a look at some of his "appearances"...
·  Conduit - Mulder faxes a page of Kevin's ones & zeros to "Danny Bernstein", who agrees to check it out in exchange for tickets to a Redskins game.
·  The Erlenmeyer Flask - Mulder calls Danny to run a partial license plate for him.
·  The Erlenmeyer Flask - Mulder calls Danny again, this time to track down the address for a telephone number (for Zeus Storage). Note: this marks the only time we get to hear Danny's voice.
·  Aubrey - Scully(!) calls Danny (although this time his last name is Valladeo(?)) for help in checking out adoption records.
·  Our Town - Mulder had Danny run a search on all missing persons last seen within a 200 mile radius of the town.
·  Avatar - Mulder calls on Danny to attempt to identify the face from the airbag.
·  WetWired - Mulder has Danny research the calls last made from the faux-doctor's hotel room.
·  Leonard Betts - Scully has Danny run Leonard Betts' fingerprints - leading them to his "Albert Tanner" alter ego.
·  Christmas Carol - Scully calls on Danny to send her the case files on her sister Melissa.
·  Roadrunners - Doggett(!) calls Danny (Season 1: 3 / Season 2: 2 / Season 3: 1 / Season 4: 1 / Season 5: 1 / Season 6: 0 / Season 7: 0 / Season 8: 1)
Another of Mulder's friends, Chuck Burks, is only called in when the case is extremely weird and Chuck's "special talents" are in order.
·  The Calusari
·  Leonard Betts
·  Biogenesis
·  Hollywood A.D.
·  Badlaa (Season 1: 0 / Season 2: 1 / Season 3: 0 / Season 4: 1 / Season 5: 0 / Season 6: 1 / Season 7: 1 / Season 8: 1)

Deaths of recurring characters In this category, recurring characters are those that have appeared in more than one episode -- and two-parters only count as one episode.
Deep Throat in "The Erlenmeyer Flask" Tooms (kinda) in "Tooms" Crew Cut Man in "Red Museum" William Mulder in "Anasazi" Melissa Scully in "Paper Clip" Luis Cardinal in "Apocrypha" Queequeg in "Quagmire" Mr. X in "Herrenvolk" Max Fenig (kinda) in "Tempus Fugit" Agent Pendrell in "Max" Penny Northern in "Memento Mori" Section Chief Blevins in "Redux II" Robert Patrick Modell in "Kitsunegari" Quiet Willy in "The Red and the Black" The Well-Manicured Man in the Movie One of the Elders (George Murdock) in "Two Fathers" Jeffery Spender (?) in "One Son" Cassandra Spender (?) in "One Son" The Syndicate in "One Son" Albert Hosteen in "The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati" Michael Kritschgau in "The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati" Diana Fowley (?) in "The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati" Donnie Pfaster in "Orison" Teena Mulder in "Sein Und Zeit" Cancerman in "Requiem"?????? (although somehow I doubt it) Alien Bounty Hunter in "Without" (one of them, at least) Billy Miles in DeadAlive (even though an alien with his body is still around) Dr. Parenti in Essence Duffy Haskell in Essence Alex Krycek in Existence
--- Honorable mentions --- these characters were dead by the end of their first episodes, but since they keep poping up I suppose they must be considered recurring
Captain William Scully in "Beyond the Sea" (seen again in "One Breath") Emily in "Christmas Carol/Emily" (seen again in "All Souls")
--- Another kind of Honorable mention ---
According to "Closure", Samantha Mulder has really been dead for the entire series, although we've seen her in clones, flashbacks, adult imposters, etc. Thus, although we the "real" Sam was never alive all this time, it just seems criminal to not mention her here somehow. She was "THE" recurring character we all loved to see. (Season 1: 3 / Season 2: 2 / Season 3: 3 / Season 4: 4 / Season 5: 3 / Season 6: 4 / Season 7: 5 / Season 8: 3)

List for the sleep-deprived As long as we are on the topic of Mulder sleeping on his couch, here is a list of instances where Mulder has been told to "get some sleep"...
·  Tooms - told "You're delirious. Go home and get some sleep" by Scully
·  Ascension - told to "Get some sleep" by Skinner
·  3 - told to "get some sleep" by Detective Munson
·  Dod Kalm - told "you should sleep" by Scully
·  Anasazi - "you need to rest okay, rest" by Scully
·  Wetwired - "get some sleep" by the Plain-Clothed Man
·  Paper Hearts - Scully informs Skinner that she told Mulder to "get some sleep"
·  Paper Hearts - "Why don't you go home and get some sleep" by Scully
·  Detour - "You sleep, Mulder" by Scully.
·  Folie A Deux - "Sleep tight" by the evil nurse.
·  Triangle - told "get some rest, Mulder" by Skinner.
·  Biogenesis - told "you should be home in bed" by Scully

Writer Vince Gilligan somehow references his girlfriend, Holly Rice, in his nearly all of his episodes
· Pusher - The secretary who beats up on Skinner is named Holly.
·  Paper Hearts - Mulder finds Roche's old car in Hollyville, Delaware.
· Unusual Suspects - When Suzanne first meets Byers, she tells him her name is Holly (like the sugar -- which also bore the name Holly).
·  Bad Blood - Sheriff Hartwell is named for Vince Gilligan's girlfriend, whose middle name is Hartwell.
·  Folie a Deux - The agent in charge of the hostage situation is named Agent Rice.
·  Drive - The gas station where Mulder hijacks the station wagon is named "Holly's"
· Tithonus - One of Fellig's pseudonyms was "L.H.Rice". This name was an homage to (Lucy) "Holly" Hartwell Rice. One of Fellig's press passes also bore Holly Rice's birthday, April 4th.
· Monday - The Cradock Marine Bank is named for a suburb of Portsmouth, Virginia where Holly grew up, and Holly's mother's maiden name is Bernard (the name of the man who tries to hold-up the bank).
· Hungry - The manager of the fast-food store is named Mr. Rice. Another employee is named Lucy, which is Holly's real first name.
· Millennium - much of the episode takes place in Rice County, Maryland, and the institution where Frank stays is the Hartwell Psychiatric Hospital in Virginia -- Vince's home state (Hartwell is Holly's middle name).
· X-Cops - The police first find Mulder and Scully on Holly Street.
·  Je Souhaite - the death of one of the Jinni's former "owners" was on April 4th, which is Holly's birthday.
·  John Doe - The American banker laundering money for the cartel was named "Hollis Rice".
·  Sunshine Days - The date mentioned on the videotape is April 4th, 1970. Holly's Birthday is April 4th. (Season 1: 0 / Season 2: 0 / Season 3: 1 / Season 4: 1 / Season 5: 3 / Season 6: 3 / Season 7: 4 / Season 8: 0 / Season 9: 2)

The Big Blunders... note: Adding this list kinda breaks my heart. It has been requested by various people down through the seasons, and I've always avoided adding it here -- partially because some blunders are open to interpretation (especially with the now-muddled mythology), but mostly because I like to keep a positive feel to my website, and this one is pretty negative. However, comments made by the powers-that-be during Season 8 made me feel that maybe this list does need to be available for all to see -- maybe those guys need to be reminded that we do indeed keep up with this stuff. I'm not aiming to list every nitpick, just what I consider to be the "big blunders" and inconsistencies between episodes and plot points.
Where Scully's cross necklace came from:
· Original: "Ascension" - given to her on her 15th birthday
· Blunder: "Christmas Carol" - given to her at Christmas
· Attempt at Explanation: maybe she broke one, and was given another?
· Truth: The writers knew that they were messing up the history when they changed the cross-backstory, but thought it was "too good of an opportunity to pass up". I personally wish that they had passed.
How long was Scully missing during her abduction:
· Original: "Duane Barry"/"One Breath" - Abducted in August, returned in November
· Blunder: "Emily" - missing for 4 weeks!
· Attempt at Explanation: Perhaps her file said that she was only missing for 4 weeks because she had 2 months vacation saved up???
Mulder's regression on 6/16/1989:
· Original: "Conduit" - audiotape contains Mulder speaking about being in bed - only able to hear Samantha call his name, he cannot see her
· Blunder: "Closure" - videotape contains Mulder describing the abduction as first seen in "Little Green Men"
· Attempt at Explanation: I was willing to believe that using different regression techniques might provide different answers, and was always willing to believe that the scenes from "Little Green Men" were more accurate than those from "Conduit" - coming from a Mulder who had recovered more of his memories with time than the one on the audiotape from 1989, but "Closure" attempted to "do-over" what had occurred in "Conduit", which I think is sloppy storytelling.
Was Samantha alive:
· Original: "End Game" - bounty hunter tells Mulder she is alive, female clones say that they know so much about her because they know where she is.
· Original: "The Blessing Way" - Bill Mulder's "spirit" tells Mulder that Sam is not dead.
· Original: "Paper Clip" - there is a recent tissue sample in Samantha's file.
· Original: "Two Fathers" - Cassandra tells Mulder that Samantha did not visit Mulder in "Redux II", that the "real" Samantha is with "the aliens".
· Blunder: "Closure" - shows the "ghost" of Samantha, who has been dead since she was 14.
· Attempt at Explanation: I realize that some of these -- particularly the Cassandra & bounty hunter ones, could have easily been them lying or simply not knowing the truth. But the tissue sample in particular was such a cool plot-point at the time -- seems like such a shame to ruin it all by having her be dead all these years.
Dana Scully: the first woman to be pregnant for 12 months
· Original: "Within/Without" - Mulder's rental car receipts from just before he disappeared are dated in May (and Scully discovered she was pregnant right after his disappearance)
· Original: "The Gift" - Skinner states that Mulder has been missing since "last May"
· Blunder: "Redrum" - Date-stamps galore place this episode in December (thus Scully, who conceived in May at the latest, is seven months pregnant and not showing during this episode)
· Blunder: "Medusa" - getting home to watch "Survivor II" is mentioned -- episodes of "Survivor II" started airing in February -- which makes her 9 months pregnant and still not showing in this episode.
· Attempt at Explanation: Alien babies have a 12 month gestation period? All kidding aside, there really is no explanation for this one -- the guys at 1013 just hope we won't notice.
Mulder in Jeopardy, with Scully to the rescue:
Deep Throat The Jersey Devil Tooms Ghost in the Machine Erlenmeyer Flask Little Green Men Red Museum Excelsius Dei Aubrey Colony/End Game Dod Kalm (kinda) Anasazi Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose 731 (over the phone) Pusher Home Teliko (cool drool!) Barbara and Karin
Can we talk about how great were Barbara Hershey in This and Karin Konoval in Plus One? I know, I present myself as a shipper and start off my talking of something else, but it deserves mention. Barbara I might be old just to remember vividly Barbara in anything else, but I remember her fondly for the part of Hillary in the movie Beaches, on which I obsessed for a short period when I was young. She played this very sweet, caring and lovely, albeit introvert, woman, opposing the extrovert and alluring character played by Bette Midler.
See, up until This, that was what I mostly remembered Barbara for. And when I saw her in her great scene with Mulder in This, I thought “holy shit, she can play a total badass, and damningly well”!!! I was floored. She’s got it. THAT is versatility, right there. I was so amazed it didn’t even bother me when she called Mulder Fox, it was actually very hot. Karin You know, up until my second or third viewing, I hadn’t realized she was playing the parts of BOTH the sister and her brother? That is pretty astounding in itself. There were two shining stars in that episode, in my opinion: Sex and Karin Konoval (hehe). You know, I think the reason why we are not talking so much about the story of Plus One in itself and about Karin Konoval’s great performance is because that was overshadowed by something historically important in the episode. The standalone story was good, yeah, but there are like 200 other standalones to compete with. It’s not Clyde Bruckman. It’s not Bad Blood. It’s not Ice... It’s good, it’s already better than what we got in season 10 by a stretch, but it’s not historically important. Mulder and Scully undeniably having sex not once, but twice is historically important. It is the first time we get to witness it so boldly, seeing as there will always be debate about All Things... That’s what history will retain of Plus One, and fine by me. BUT KARIN WAS AWESOME.

My friend watched some episodes in season 1 or season 2 I think. She usually likes sci-fi (her fav film ever is called dead man's letters so she LOVES sci-fi AND painful stuff) that's why I told her to check the X-Files out lol. What episodes should I show her next time I see her? I, myself, haven't finished the show yet so like what are some of the BEST episodes (in terms of quality/artsy/meaning) she's a very critical person and I like to impress her lol.
Uh.  Triangle?  That’s artsy.  And maybe Mind’s Eye.  José Chung’s From Outer Space?  Bad Blood?  Pusher?  I also like Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose.  If she wants to be creeped out, you could show her Home or Squeeze/Tooms.  The problem with trying to find episodes that look polished is that the production values from seasons 1-5 were iffy and the seasons from LA are sometimes a little less interesting in terms of the storytelling (in my opinion, because they got a little less wacky and a little more polished in a way that I didn’t find quite as compelling as the earlier seasons when the stakes seemed higher and the roughness lent a certain rustic charm to the stories).
