The quick tempo of his footsteps sped up even more as she glanced behind her. He was gaining on her quickly. Practically running, she ducked around the corner, coming face-to-face with a man in black.

Gasping out a quick apology, she made the executive decision to ignore the stranger danger signs blaring in her mind. She was in enough danger from non-strangers as it was–besides, most crimes, especially violent ones against women, were committed by people the victim knew and were close to. Statistically, she was safer with this random guy she’d found all in black in a dark alley where no one else was around…wow, she wasn’t safe anywhere, was she?

Ignoring everything but the fact that so far Random Guy hadn’t pulled a knife on her, she cleared her throat and widened her eyes pleadingly, begging him to play along.

“Babe, I was waiting ages for you! What took you so long to come get me?” she exclaimed, taking his hand in hers, unwilling though he was.

He stepped out of the alley into the street and saw who she was running from. His gaze flicked down to her, then back at him. 

His grip tightened on her hand. 

A black car came gliding to a stop at the curb in front of them, and a man in a black suit climbed out of the driver’s seat to open the rear passenger door.

Random Guy handed her in with the grace of one born into a chaebol family, then closed the door and turned to face her pursuer.

She glanced through the smoked glass to see what was going on, surprised that she could barely hear any noise through the car.

The driver flashed a bright smile at her through the glass, blocking her view. Wow, he was really pretty.

The smile disappeared and he opened the door, letting Random Guy get in. She scooched over, tugging the hem of her dress down, aware she didn’t look her best at the moment. The interior light showed his gelled hair, soft features, onyx-sharp eyes, and a faded scar running down the right side of his face.

He studied her silently in return, making her uncomfortably aware of her wind-blown hair falling out of her braid, the perspiration beading on her body, and her rumpled clothes.

Putting a bright smile on her lips regardless, she extended her hand to him. “I appreciate your helping me get away from him. I sincerely thank you.”

He shook her hand, his large one dwarfing hers, his long fingers cool and clean. “You’re welcome. What is your name?”

“Oh, right. Kim Seo-ah.”

“Min Yoongi,” said the man just as his driver got in at the wheel. He threw him a startled look, glancing between her and her rescuer with an unreadable expression on his face.

The car started with a barely-there hum, and Min Yoongi turned to her again.

“Could you tell me what was happening back there?”

She glanced down, smoothing her hem more carefully than it called for. “He’s my little sister’s ex-boyfriend, Lee Geum. He created debts in her name and decided that we needed to placate him; he thinks he’s some hotshot yakuza or something, like he’s playing at being Agust D or something,” she laughed shortly. “He’s been following me home from the pawnshop where I work for the past few weeks, trying to intimidate me into giving him our money and following me to see our new living arrangements. I’ve managed to lose him so far, but today he started getting closer and closer and I saw him with a knife in his pocket. It was a blessing that you were there.”

He hummed, uninterested. “How many men does he have working for him that he thinks he’s the next Agust D?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe twenty or thirty? He’s not a good leader.”

Min Yoongi coughed. 

“Have you gone to the police and asked for their help to deal with the issue?”

“I don’t know if you noticed, Mr Min, but this part of town isn’t exactly the most protected place. We’re all too poor to require any real guarding. What valuables could we possibly have? And I did try the police, when he threatened my sister, but they didn’t care.”

The driver clicked his tongue disappointedly.

“What if someone was able to do something about it?”

“Like what?” Seo-ah glanced at him curiously.

“Sent evidence of his crimes to the police or something. Do you think that maybe they’d take you seriously and do something about it then?”

“Maybe,” she admitted dubiously.

“Are you any good at acting?”

She glanced at him suspiciously. “I’d say I’m decent. Why?”

He simply flattened his mouth into what she suspected was a half-smile but could have been a grimace. She took the hint and dropped her line of questioning.

With a gasp she realized that the car had stopped outside of a luxurious villa in Seongbuk-dong. 

The driver opened her door, extending his hand to her. She gingerly took it, stepping out onto the pebbled drive as she took in her gated surroundings. 

Min Yoongi’s warmth alerted her to his presence behind her.

“Er…”

“Come with me.” He took her elbow gently, leading her into the house, past a man in a suit like the driver’s, but looking considerably more dangerous. 

Min Yoongi led her to the kitchen, putting a kettle on to boil for tea and pulling out two cups.

He paused, hand on a cupboard door as he glanced back at her. “Would you prefer something a little bit stronger?”

“I’m alright with tea. Thank you. May I ask why I’m here?”

“Because I’d like to talk to you.”

“Without asking for my permission?” she raised an eyebrow, dropping the formal tone.

He raised one back at her impropriety.

“You essentially kidnap me, I don’t have to add honorifics,” she shrugged, hoping to cover up the unsettling thought she’d been struck by, that she’d traded the devil she knew for the one she didn’t.

“I apologize. Would you like to join me for tea at my home?”

“I’d prefer to have you to mine as a thank you, but given your look–” she waved a hand at his suit–”and my home, this is the better option. I’d be delighted to join you, thank you for asking.”

He gave her another inscrutable, curious look as he poured the tea. “You’re welcome.”

She perched, feeling only slightly awkward and out of place, on the white leather seats at his marble island, gratefully taking the cup he handed her.

He stood across from her, his own cup in hand. 

“So, from what I’ve gathered from you, is that you’re the head of a low-income household, you’re in financial difficulty, your dongsaeng’s ex is threatening trouble, and there’s not much happening to address these issues.”

She swallowed a sip of the hot tea, feeling like the words had burned hotter than her tongue now was. That was her situation, but somehow the cold way he had laid out those facts threatened to tear down the defensive walls she’d built.

“Yes, that is the state of things,” she said quietly, already feeling the fuzz on her tongue from the tea burn.

“How much debt did the ex leave you?”

She swallowed another sip. “About thirteen million won.”

As expected of a man who lived in this area, he didn’t bat an eye.

“I have a proposal for you, then.”

She nodded.

“I will help you pay off your debts and take care of this ex, and in return you will enter a contractual marriage with me for five years.”

Seo-ah coughed, expelling the tea from her windpipe that she’d inhaled in shock. “You want me to do what?”

“Marry me. For five years. What do you say?”

“Why do you need a wife? You look fairly young, you’re rich and hot and appear to be influential.”

He smirked at her list of his traits. “Business reasons. There are some things I cannot tell you until you have signed the contract, if you so agree. I’ve been looking for the right wife for a while now, and I think you’ll be splendid.”

“Could I have a copy of this contract so I know what’s expected?”

Min Yoongi pulled his cell phone out and pressed a button. “I need the papers in the kitchen.”

A minute later footsteps sounded in the hallway, then a man in a suit jogged into the kitchen, carrying a small briefcase in hand. He paused as he took in the scene, then handed the briefcase off to Min Yoongi.

He opened the briefcase and pulled out a sheaf of papers, rifling through them to collect a handful that he handed off to  her.

She flipped through them, reading the surprisingly simple legal jargon. It looked aboveboard. 

She was getting desperate: some creditors were already hounding her enough without Geum’s pressure, Jinah would be needing to pay for her schooling, plus the usual living expenses…Well, she could use this stroke of luck that had fallen into her lap. She was well aware that this contract, though it sounded fair, would likely end in Min Yoongi’s favour, but she would cross that bridge when she came to it. He was the best option at the present time and she would not borrow trouble from her future self.

“I’ll do it,” she declared.

The man who’d brought the briefcase handed her a pen, the clicking of the end sounding loud in the suddenly supernaturally still kitchen.

She signed her name with a flourish, watching the black ink seep into the paper. Min Yoongi took the pen from her and slid the papers from under her arm, scrawling his signature quickly and handing them to the man.

“The registration will come through in a couple days. Would you like to stay here until then?” he asked courteously.

She shook her head. “I appreciate your offer, and this opportunity, but I need to get back to my sister. I don’t like leaving her alone in our area, especially with her ex around.”

“Alright, I’ll get Hoseok to take you back. Thank you for signing this.”

She swallowed, mouth suddenly dry despite the two cups of tea she’d drunk.

COMING SOON - ANIME UPDATE V3

“V3″ in this case stands for “Version 3″. I did the V1 series of posts from late 2019 to the end of 2021, then did the V2 posts in 2022 and 2023. Time for another shake-up, once more before the last time.

Vinland Saga S2 will continue with its second half, and once I'm done with it, and once I'm done with it, the newly revived Kimi ni Todoke will be taking its place, itself to be followed by Vision of Escaflowne once I'm done with it.

Hunter x Hunter will continue to the end this year, and once I'm finally done with it, Fullmetal Alchemist will be taking its place.

SHUFFLE! will be a new anime I start up, and along with it will soon come the 13 episode AIR. Jun Maeda's prototype for CLANNAD, Kanon, would be the most likely to take its place afterwards.

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works draws to a close, soon to be replaced by The Case Files Of Lord El Meloi II.

Konosuba will be taking over from Re:ZERO (talk about whiplash!), and once its done, its place will be taken by Black Cat.

Symphogear XV will finish off the Symphogear series, and once that's done, K-On!! will be taking its place.

Eureka Seven will continue through the year, and once I'm done with it, I'll finally look back to the Gundam franchise with Gundam Wing.

Gintama will be returning as well. with me finally getting closer towards the really good parts.

An Appoplexian OC I thought of, named Tempar

some background for this (basically quoting a Reddit post I made the other day)

I got this idea in my head after watching KurotheArtist's idea for a Ben 10 MMORPG. I like the idea of exploring Alien homeworlds and MMOs are great for big worlds, but it does make me think of one thing:

A lot of Alien planets in Sci-Fi series, or just any series with space as a setting struggle from Planet of Hats syndrome, where you see one group of an alien species and the entire race is like that, and/or you just see one part of the planet and the whole planet is like that. Looking at Earth we have a bunch of different cultures and ecosystems and belief systems that when we make up an alien race we just all make it one culture, it is easy yes, but it also feels lazy.

I'm sure there are at least a few stories with a space setting that have multiple variations of the species and cultures and I might just now know where to look, but you got to admit this genre is kind of littered with "The entire species' culture is like this".

So I wanted to start looking at the species in Ben 10 and imaging what differing views could come from them. Last night I came up with something for the Appoplexians.

How many ways could a species that is hyper-aggressive view themselves and develop? One idea I thought of is "What if some Appoplexians tried to temper their rage, still as wrathful as the rest but far more disciplined and controlled". SO I imagined a white-tiger variant of the Appoplexians that live in more arctic/snow mountain regions of their homeworld. Think a mixture of Tibetan monks with hardcore training/discipline and Nordic Berserkers where their rage is almost monk-like, controlled.

Instead of the "LEMME TELL YA SOMETHIN' * insert full name and titles * " they would go "Allow me to inform you, * insert full name and titles *" which is more controlled/eloquent, but depending on their tone it can be aggressive or it could be respectful. Them mentioning the full name and titles could also be part of this respectful nature. Like an "I am going to call you out but I will give you the respect you deserve in the process"

My OC here Tempar's name comes from both Temper, as in rage which matches the theme of other Appoplexians, but also Temper as in "Tempering your fury"

Two cents of ramblings on: “Bungō Stray Dogs” (Anime) - Season 1...

...and why I recommend it.

WARNINGS: There’s death, mafia (or should I say Yakuza?), human objectification, suicide attempts, murders, terrorist attacks.

The plot in short: Nakajima Atsushi, a teen driven out from an orphanage, rescues Dazai Osamu from drowning. Due to this meeting he learns he has a supernatural ability which transform him into a berserker white tiger in the moonlight. This lead him to join the Armed Detective Agency, an Agency of supernaturally gifted people and to fight other groups of supernaturally gifted men.

HOW DID I STUMBLE INTO IT

Back then I saw the promotional video and it seemed interesting so I decided to try it out.

THINGS YOU MIGHT WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE TACKLING THIS

You might enjoy more the series if you’ve some knowledge of Japanese literature as each character is named after a famous writer and their supernatural abilities are named after their works or something that happened in them (hence the ‘Bungō’ in the title) because characters and abilities are actually inspired by writers and their works.

MY TWO CENTS ON IT

THE SHORT VERSION… or what I can tell you about this while trying to keep spoilers at the very bare minimum.

Opening & ending: The anime uses as opening “Trash Candy” by Granrodeo and as ending “Namae wo Yobu yo” (名前を呼ぶよ ‘I'll call your name’) by Luck Life. I loved both. The opening well work to introduce both the Armed Detective Agency members and the Port Mafia members with some very smart shoots and a good dose of dynamism. The ending also has some clever shoots but focuses mostly on Atsushi, Dazai and Akutagawa, playing on the contrast between Atsushi and Akutagawa and their relation with Dazai, assigning to Atsushi an azure colour while Akutagawa has red. It also plays a lot with the theme of books as it starts with Atsushi reading a book and then we will have various shoots in which we see a book or pages floating in the air. Overall both are very good.

The plot: “Bungō Stray Dogs” is a still ongoing manga, so the series focuses mostly on introducing the main characters and the setting in a series of episodic plots which results in covering the first 4 volumes of the manga… and it does its work well as you easily get how that world work and start to know and like the characters. The mood well alternate from amusing to dramatic to action filled so this is also something worth praising in this series.

The characters: We get to know around 20 characters in 12 episodes, some well enough to find them worth of our love, some instead are just introduced, but they’re all recognizable enough and feel interesting and make us want to know more about them.

The visual: The visual is good, the backgrounds are detailed and well cared for, there’s a good use of lights to create atmosphere, the animation is fluid, the effects when the characters use their special abilities are good. This series as an interesting quirk of using boxes that feel like pages in which one would write a novel to deliver information, writing them as if someone was just typing them inside the boxes. As they don’t fill them with too much info they aren’t annoying. The colouring isn’t bright unless someone is using a special ability, which draws even more attention on it. The character design makes each character very recognizable. Overall it’s all good.

The musical background: Iwasaki Taku created an interesting BGM for the series, but, as far as I’m involved, it’s nothing I really came to love or be impressed with, although it had some good moments.

Overall: It’s an interesting start for a series that’s clearly meant to continue. I think you enjoy it even more if you can get the references between the characters’ name and abilities and the writers and their works but, even if you don’t, it’s still a good work that will intrigue you ad make you long for more

THE LONG VERSION… or what I loved and hated about this with, of course, TONS OF SPOILERS.

Personally I loved Atsushi’s struggle to find a place to belong and his own self worth. He’s a kind and naïve soul but one who can be very capable when put to pressure but, due to his unlucky upbringing, he holds no love for himself and he’s sure he has no worth. Despite this he’s a surprisingly nice person. When we meet him, even though he was starving and homeless, he saved Dazai from drowning. Later, he threw himself on a bomb to protect the others. Then despite being scared and warned of the danger Akutagawa presented, he faced him to protect the Tanizaki siblings. Then, even though he was told not to, he fought Akutagawa again to try to save Kyōka, whom he perceived as similar to himself as she can’t control well her own ability and would like to die so as not to be used as a killer anymore. And when Atsushi decides to give his all he can be a surprisingly good fighter, he’s not skilled just because he uses the power of the tiger but also because he uses his brain when fighting. Long story short, although Atsushi seems weak, he has a great inner strength he uses to help others and is overall awesome.

And of course I love how Kyōka too gains a sense of self worth through her connection to Atsushi and stop wishing for her own death but tries to find a way to live.

Dazai is also an amazing character. He’s amazingly capable, mysterious, funny, suicidal, intelligent, dark, merciless and kind at the same time, his personality having so many facets, so he’s pretty similar to a diamond in a way. He’s complicate and intriguing and make you want to know more about him, a lot more.

Akutagawa is also an interesting character, with so much rage inside him that hides how filled with pain he is, how desperate he is to prove himself to Dazai to the point he’s beyond jealous of Atsushi and fixates on Dazai failing to realize around him there’s people who cares for him like Higuchi. He clearly need to be explored more, as we only seem to graze his own surface but he sure feels interesting.

Special mention for Mori Ōgai, the leader of the Port Mafia, who in the last episode seemed a harmless guy searching for little Elise, and even manages to pass for a good person when he advises Atsushi during his fight with Lucy.

Mori Ōgai: No, boy. Your enemy lies that way. I wouldn’t advise running away in this particular case. Er, that is, if you trust the words of your local neighborhood physician. If you were to believe her words, you’ll forget everything once you leave through that door. You’ll remember neither the enemy’s subterfuge, nor your colleagues in danger. And the enemy will continue to press her attack. I’ll teach you something of use. In game theory the optimal strategy is to launch a total counteroffensive on an enemy who has attacked you. Crush the enemy. Nakajima Atsushi: But how? Mori Ōgai: An arrogant enemy who feels invincible is the most vulnerable opponent of all. And did I hear right, that the ones beyond that door are the very ones who desperately tried to save you when you were taken?

Sure, differently from Atsushi, we could clearly tell he was suspicious as hell when interacting with him and then there’s the fact he scared Lucy to death with just a look, but he still came out as interesting and he even advises Atsushi short after his fight has ended.

Mori Ōgai: Boy… A logical, optimal solution exists in any wartime situation, no matter how difficult the challenge. You must not forget that, especially in times of confusion when you might feel inclined to recklessness.

…and it seems a good advice but… if we scratch at the surface a logical, optimal solution is a cold matter that doesn’t keep into consideration emotions or human lives, which fits with how he is the Port Mafia leader and previously, when he ‘motivated’ Atsushi to fight, he actually manipulated him into doing so.

So yeah, he’s an interesting guy. Well, actually everyone is interesting and I could talk about all of them a lot but I think it’ll be better if I’ll let you discover them.

Overall “Bungō Stray Dogs” is definitely a series worth watching that will give you fun, drama and lot of action as well as a dip into literature. It work well if you want to get into the manga or can be just enjoyed as a stand alone or, maybe, you can move to the next series as this one is just the first series and there are 2 more series (a 4th is also planned), an OAV and a movie. So if you’re just an anime person and not into manga you still have a lot to watch.

Least Favorite Character: Mori Ougai (Jouno Saigiku if we count the manga)

Notes:

Bungou Stray Dogs is my favorite manga series, and as such, I have a complicated relationship with the anime. I watched the anime before reading the manga, but rewatched the show around when chapter 98 was released. I love the show as well, I just have issues with how Studio Bones animates characters (MHA was another victim of this, but BSD is particularly tragic). Otherwise, it is mostly faithful to the manga. It’s a genuinely interesting series that intentionally takes dead authors and their relationships and flips them on their heads, all while exploring how cycles of abuse begin, are perpetuated, and how they can be ended. I adore the story Asagiri is telling and encourage anyone with even a mild interest in classical literature or action to watch the show and/or read the manga.

Seo-ah awoke to the sound of birds chirping, the melodic twittering floating in through the window opened a crack.

The heavy curtains were pulled, but a sliver of sunlight made its way through the slit in the middle, showcasing the fluff dancing in the air over her toes.

Covering a yawn, she got out of bed and stretched, noting the wrinkle-free blankets on the other half of the bed. Either Yoongi had made his half when he left or he’d never joined her in the first place. She wasn’t sure how to feel about that.

The shower in the ensuite was large and had far too many spouts for one person, or even two. Lately, Seo-ah had taken to using soap when she washed her hair, figuring she could save the cost of hair products, so she hadn’t brought any with her. She helped herself to the ones on the ledge, inhaling the ginger and mint scent with a pleased hum.

Showered and dressed, she headed to the kitchen to make breakfast and found Yoongi and Jinah cleaning up the island together.

A hint of pink showed on his ears and across his cheeks, and Jinah had a far-too-familiar smugness about her. Seo-ah squeezed her eyes shut, then stepped forward with a cheery greeting.

Yoongi greeted her, seemingly relieved, and Jinah gave her nothing but a pleased smirk. “Your plate is under the dome on the table,” she nodded. “We debated saving you some since you’re such a layabed, but decided you do enough to merit a holiday, so I made you a bowl.”

Seo-ah considered calling her mischievous little sister out on her veiled statements but decided she wasn’t prepared to deal with what that would unleash.

“You could’ve woken me up,” she protested, pulling out a chair and taking the chopsticks Yoongi handed her with a smile.

“No, you deserve to sleep in, unnie. Besides, now I can catch up on knowing my brother-in-law!”

Seo-ah choked on her rice. Jinah was Agust D’s sister-in-law, and was calling him oppa. She needed a nap, or maybe more of last night’s whisky.

“I’m glad my two favourite people are getting along,” she managed.

Jinah smiled serenely and Yoongi made his escape.

Seo-ah’s phone buzzed. A text from Yoongi.

Min Yoongi: Can you come to my office?

A moment later, another text popped up.

Min Yoongi: The one in my home, not downtown. It’s the second door on the right off the living room.

Yes, because Jinah had gotten the tour before her, busy as she was having a panic attack on the floor of her new closet, and now she had to pretend to know where everything was.

Kim Seoah: Okay, be there in a minute.

Jinah waved her goodbyes, heading off to school, which Hoseok was driving her to, and Seo-ah waited until the taillights disappeared.

She knocked lightly on the door twice.

“Come in.”

Yoongi’s office was neat and clean, with nothing superfluous about it. Shades of grey and black, with some red thrown in for colour. The carpet was a swirl of red and black, and she immediately diverted any further thoughts about the colour schemes.

Two chairs stood in front of his large wooden desk, one a soft wingback and the other an uncomfortable-looking metal. He nodded at the soft chair in a gesture to sit down, so she sat, folding her hands nervously over her knee.

Yoongi’s long fingers pushed a small rectangle across the clear space on his desk to her. “This is yours.”

She picked it up. It was a credit card. She glanced at him. 

“It’s connected to the account under your name at my bank. Use it whenever. I told you I’d pay you for the jobs you take for me, so I’ll automatically deposit your wages there.”

She opened her mouth to refuse it, then closed it again.. She’d literally married him for his money, why would she refuse it now that she was married? Besides, she would be earning it herself, with her acting challenges. She’d quit her job at the pawn shop, intending to get a job closer to her new home. She needed income somehow, for when their contract was over.

“Thank you.”

She opened her mouth to ask him about the sleeping situation, but remembered his flusteredness this morning with Jinah’s teasing, and thought the better of it. But they were married, and they should talk about it like the adults they were. But the sheer awkwardness! Asking your spouse if they were going to sleep with you, even just in the literal sense!

“Spit it out,” he said dryly, noticing her internal struggle.

He asked. Here goes nothing.  

“What were your thoughts about us sleeping together?”

The arm supporting his chin slipped off his chair’s armrest.

“It didn’t seem like you slept in our bed last night,” she mentioned, hoping to help the conversation along. Horror dawned on her. “Was I sleeping on your side?”

He huffed a laugh through his nose, shaking his head. “I didn’t want to disturb you. We’re still somewhat strangers and I didn’t think you’d be comfortable with a man who’d just admitted he’s a criminal getting into bed with you.”

“We should have discussed this before we got married,” Seo-ah agreed, hoping her cheeks weren’t blushing as red as she felt. “And I apologise for anything my sister may have said this morning.”

“It’s alright. She reminds me of some of my men’s relationships with each other.”

“That’s good.”

“So…you want us to share a bed?”

“I think it would be the easiest thing to do to keep up the ruse, yes,” she said, praying that the blush covering her face would abate. “What if Jinah finds you sleeping on the couch one night, or wherever you slept?”

“I’ll just tell her you kicked me out because we argued,” Yoongi joked. “You have a point. As long as you’re comfortable with it.”

“I brought it up, didn’t I?”

He nodded his agreement at her point. Seo-ah had just felt the flames of awkward embarrassment fade when he turned back to her.

“About our physical relationship–we’ll be required to be somewhat tactile with each other, at least at the VIP events. Holding hands, my arm around your waist, et cetera. Will you be okay with that?”

Seo-ah let out her breath, uncertain if she was disappointed or not. “Yes, that will be fine. We’ll probably have to hug sometimes when Jinah catches us, she’ll find it weird if we never touch. I’m often touching her, just little things, you know? It’s important to me.”

“That will be fine. Is there anything else we need to settle?” “I don’t think so…oh, what are the most important things I should get when I go shopping later? The basics for surviving a society event I might get invited to?”

Yoongi frowned in thought, leaning back in his chair. “I’m not sure, but I know someone who will know.” Pulling out his phone, he texted someone, his thumbs flying over the keyboard.

“She’ll be here in five minutes.”

Seo-ah waited patiently as Yoongi worked in silence, glancing around the utilitarian office and out the half-window wall.

It afforded a lovely view of the porch and circular driveway, so she saw when a black car pulled in and a woman stepped out. She was wearing a blush-pink pantsuit and white stilettos, a white coat over her shoulders and a cherry-pink bag in hand.

A minute later she appeared in Yoongi’s doorway. “You called, boss?”

“You made it,” he said flatly. 

“Unfortunately for you,” she snipped, turning to a bewildered Seo-ah.

“Yah, be nice. Seo-ah, this is Kim Miran, my second-in-command’s wife. Miran, this is my wife, Seo-ah. She needs the basics for surviving elite society’s scrutiny.”

Miran hugged her quickly, stepping back to squeal in delight and clap her hands. 

“Yoongi, I take back every mean thing I said about you. Come on, Seo-ah, let’s shop until he’s broke!”

Seo-ah pulled back, looking to Yoongi for help. The traitor waved her off with a resigned smile. “I trust you to hold Miran in check, Seo-ah!”

The floorboard just outside their bedroom creaked, making Seo-ah wince as she opened the door. Sneaking in is fine as long as you don't have two dozen bags on your arms making your width impossible to quietly and efficiently move through doorways.

The soft glow of the lamp on the bedside table revealed Yoongi sitting in bed, arms crossed as he stared her down like she was a bird and he a cat. Heh, he was rather catlike, wasn’t he. Imagine calling him a cat to his face. He’d probably be offended it wasn’t a lion or something.

She giggled at the thought, still standing awkwardly in the doorway.

“Did Miran take you drinking?”

Seo-ah tried to raise her hand to pinch her fingers together, but they were full of bags. “Just a little,” she giggled. “I didn’t make you broke though.”

He sighed and got out of bed, revealing the fact that he was wearing nothing but boxers, something that made her hastily avert her eyes to the ceiling.

He chuckled at her preserving his innocence and took one armload of bags from her. The sudden change in balance made her tip into him, sending him sprawling on the floor. She landed on him with an oof, all the air blown out of her lungs.

He stared up at her, his petal-pink lips open in surprise. Seo-ah glanced back up at his round eyes. He really did look like a cat at that moment, and she couldn’t help the giggle that sneaked out.

Yoongi moved her off of him and stood up, letting her laugh on the floor as he hauled all of her now-spilled bags to the closet. “I’ll let you sort those out tomorrow,” he announced, coming out and standing over her as she still laughed.

“I’m glad to see you’re a giggly drunk and not a talkative drunk, but I imagine you’d prefer to giggle in bed with me since you were so concerned about it this morning.” He leaned down, grabbed her wrists to pull her up and hauled her over to the bed.

Seo-ah’s giggles stopped abruptly as he manhandled her between the covers, surprisingly gentle for a big bad mobster. She stared at the strands of hair that fell over his forehead. They looked soft. Was it his spicy shampoo?

The hand that he wasn’t tucking under the sheet smoothed the loose hairs back. He paused and glanced up at her.

She ran her fingers through his hair again. It was as soft as it looked. She hoped her hair would be that soft if she kept using his shampoo. 

“Do you like this?” she asked, scarcely above a whisper. 

He nodded. She kept finger-combing it for several minutes, until he finally straightened.

“Good night, Seo-ah.”

The dull throbbing in her temples was the first thing Seo-ah noticed when she awoke. With a belaboured sigh, she pushed herself up against the headboard.

The glass of water on her nightstand caught her eye. It was still cool. She drank it in three gulps, her mouth drier than a desert.

Stepping into the closet after her shower, nothing but a towel around her, she saw all the bags stacked neatly in a row on her side as the previous night’s memories came back. With a groan, she stepped past them to pull on some old, comfy clothes before facing her husband.

Really? Petting his hair like the cat Drunk Seo-ah was reminded of? Shivering with cringe, she stepped into the kitchen. It was empty today, with her meal again under the metal dome keeping the dishes warm. The bowl of hangover soup was the first thing she reached for.

Once her dishes were washed and put away, she headed to Yoongi’s office.

“Come in.”

She peeked in cautiously.

“Good morning, Seo-ah.”

“Good morning, Yoongi. I’m sorry about last night, if I made you uncomfortable or anything.”

“It’s fine,” he brushed it off. “It’s good you got along well with Miran. She can introduce you to people in society more naturally than I can. And she’ll be a good friend, in general. I’m sure she and her husband suspect something, but no one in my ranks can know that we’re looking for rats. Just…be careful what you say.”

Seo-ah nodded. “I’ll do that. And don’t worry about last night. I was able to spill our story and she didn’t sense anything off about it.”

“Good job. Did you get everything you needed, or will you be going out again today?”

Seo-ah thought about it. “Almost everything. I’ll just be out for a couple hours if Miran is free now.”

“Alright, be safe. When you get back, we should discuss bodyguards.”

“Okay. I’ll text you when I’m back.”

He waved her off and she texted her new friend.

You had never seen Jungkook look so pissed before. When you were around, he was all smiles and heart eyes and this just showed how much he adored you; however, the look he was giving you right now was so dark that you had to look away.

'Because I'm damn jealous,' he said. Did he mean this? Didn't he hate you for dumping him? For giving up on him even though he asked—begged you to stay with him?

'But it's complicated.' You argued with yourself. You didn't want to make things difficult. He was promised to Soojin. Your sister said she was in love with Jungkook too. Who were you to stop them from being together?

Besides, you did it for the company and for your father.

Ah, your father...

You sacrificed things to make him happy, yet you still weren't given a chance to see him for the last time.

You cackled bitterly as you drank another shot of tequila. Your head spun and your throat burned. You didn't care though. You still continued drinking until your vision doubled and until you couldn't feel the intensity of Jungkook's glare anymore.

"Tiger..." But you felt him touch your elbow lightly to stop you from taking another shot of this alcoholic beverage.

You glared at him, prying your arm out of his grasp. Jungkook pursed his lips and let you go. His jaw ticked, thick brows furrowing.

"What do you want, Jungkook?" You hissed, a thought popping inside your mind: why did we lash out on the people we loved when we're frustrated or lonely?

You didn't want to push him away anymore, you also didn't want to lose him again, but your actions were the opposite of what you felt.

You were just so tired of losing people. It's better to push those who loved you and insist yourself to those who didn't love you.

"You're drunk," he sighed, putting his hands inside the pockets of his jeans. Jungkook wanted to touch you again but he was scared to upset you.

"I'm not." You replied incompletely: I'm not drunk. I'm grieving.

"Literally everyone who's drunk always denies they're drunk. Stop it—" He instantly snatched the shot glass from your hand when you tried to bring it to your lips.

"Hey!" You pouted as Jungkook downed the shot, his adam's apple bobbing in his throat.

"No more drinks for you." He smiled cheekily like he won.

Your lips protrude more. Did he think this was a game?

"Fine." You called the attention of the bartender. You would play too.

"Three more shots of tequila please..." You batted an eyelash at the bartender, unfortunately what you received in return was a tight smile.

The bartender offered to serve you a non-alcoholic beverage instead since it was obvious you're intoxicated. You couldn't handle more alcohol.

"But I want to!" You whined. It's a little out of character. You rarely insisted what you wanted. The environment where you grew up taught you to just accept things you couldn't have. It was like you didn't have the right to fight for what you wanted.

"Alright. That's it. Let's get you home." Jungkook interrupted when you attempted to grab the collar of the bartender's uniform.

Shit. Jungkook forgot how feisty you got when you're drunk.

"Um—" The bartender seemed uncomfortable while switching glances between you and Jungkook. "Do you know him?"

"She does. I'm her best friend." Jungkook answered the question of the bartender for you.

"Mam?" But the bartender didn't look convinced. The response must come out of your mouth. What if Jungkook was taking advantage of you? It's the bar's protocol to look after their drunk customer.

"He's lying." You told the bartender which made Jungkook's jaw clench.

"Tiger—" He dug his hands into your hips, steadying you in place. You looked like you're about to fall from the bar stool.

Damn it. You're too intoxicated.

"Would you like me to call you an uber, Mam?" The bartender asked but you didn't respond. Instead, you turned to Jungkook.

"You're not just my best friend, Jungkook." You put your hand on his chest. At first he thought you're gonna push him away again, he was surprised, however, when you leaned your head against his ribcage, feeling the beat of his heart "You're more than that..."

Your lips were dangerous close to Jungkook. It was as though you're waiting to be kissed; however, before your mouths molded together, Jungkook immediately tilted his head, clearly avoiding the act.

Hurt crossed your face as you heard your heart breaking.

To mask the pain, you pretended like you're sleepy. You yawned and then your eyes fluttered shut.

Moments later, you're not pretending anymore. You're off to dreamland.

The bartender let you go after seeing how you snuggled up to Jungkook, it was like you were comfortable around him, like you knew him with all of your heart.

"I'm not a bad person. I really know her. I can leave my identification cards here if you want." Jungkook offered to ease the mind of the bartender.

But the employee said there’s no need for that. He was free to leave with you.

Your best friend nodded and then he called an uber upon realizing that he couldn't drive. Admittedly he wouldn't mind driving if he was alone, but he wouldn't compromise your safety after he drank two glasses of bourbon and a shot of tequila. No questions asked. He'd definitely leave his car in the parking space of this bar. He could always come back for it later.

For now, his whole attention was focused on you. He was aware you'd be cross with him the moment you sobered up and realized you were at his home.

Jungkook didn't want to go back to the motel. He wasn't sure if he could still bear to sleep on that Godforsaken bed one more time. He knew you probably felt the same way as well. You're just too stubborn to admit it.

Jungkook helped you get on the bed. You were inside the guest room, the same room where you used to sleep whenever he begged you to stay the night.

He missed those moments. He missed having you around. You weren't just the girl he had romantic feelings for. You're also his best friend, his other half, and his soulmate. He's lost without you.

"Rest well, Tiger." After removing your shoes and massaging your feet a little, Jungkook smiled fondly at your sleeping form.

He was content just by looking at you like this. After listening to your cries every night through that thin wall of the motel room, Jungkook finally saw you sleeping soundly.

Jungkook was wrong; you didn't get crossed with him when you had realized you're in his apartment, if anything, you looked...grateful.

"Want more?" He asked thoughtfully after noticing that you had finished the bowl of soup he made just for you.

Jungkook also bought corn dogs and your favorite probiotic drink. Of course chocolates were included as well.

"No thanks. I'm full." You smiled sheepishly and avoided his gaze.

You were embarrassed, feeling like you were taking advantage of him. Jungkook prepared your food and he let you sleep in his place for more than twelve hours. He took care of you during your most vulnerable state.

You knew you didn't deserve his kindness, not after pushing him away for so many times and then trying to kiss him.

Your eyes dilated at the memory of that.

Shit.

Why did you try to kiss him!?

Were you out of your mind? Did he remember? What did he think of you? Was he disgusted?

"I should go—" You abruptly flinched, alarmed by the humiliating questions circling your head.

"You should stay the night." But Jungkook said this at the same time you told him it's better if you go.

Your head snapped to meet his gaze at once. You were obviously startled by what he said.

Jungkook was currently sitting on a chair right in front of you, the look in his eyes was gentle, almost pleading—as if he's scared you're gonna shut him down again.

"I know you don't want to be around me but I can't let you leave in the middle of the night." I don't want you to be alone, my Tiger.

"I—I need to change though." You gripped the neckline of your top. It smelled like alcohol and sweat.

"All of your things are still in the guest room." Your room. "Nothing's changed." I still love you.

"Okay." You whispered softly. "Thanks, Kook." I don't want to be alone tonight.

"Sure." Anything for you.

You ended up staying at Jungkook's apartment for a couple more days. Or was it weeks?

You honestly didn't know. All you ever did was sleep and ignore the world. You're hurting inside. You felt tired, like nothing mattered.

Jungkook said your father had been buried. You didn't get to attend the wake and the funeral.

"No one really attended, you know? It's just me and the Kims." Jungkook's attempt to soothe you didn't do anything.

Taemin's friends and colleagues didn't go to the funeral but only because they didn't want to associate themselves with your father.

People were calling him a murderer. Based on police investigation, the building collapsed because of design faults and negligence. Taemin was being blamed not only because he was the chairman of the firm but also because he was leading the construction of the building.

The public was demanding accountability.

"It's messed up. Everyone at the firm is going berserk. We need a new chairperson but the Kims are still mourning." Jungkook explained, his eyes were bloodshot.

He looked tired. He actually just got home from the office. His stress was apparent.

Jungkook also told you that the voting for the new chairperson was happening soon. The lawyers of Taemin were reaching out to the Kims so that they could finally discuss the decedent's will.

"Seokjin-hyung told me to tell you that you should be in the meeting. Anyway, I think the estate attorney would reach out to you soon. Castle wants to appoint the new chairperson as soon as possible."

"It's going to be you, right?" It took everything in you to ask this. Truthfully, it made your stomach sink. If Jungkook was going to be the new chairperson, it only meant that he and Soojin would be married soon.

But Jungkook just shrugged.

"You have to be at the meeting." And instead he said this. The loud conviction in his voice was clear.

"Will you be there too?" You enquired.

Jungkook smiled softly. "I'm not part of that family, Tiger."

You kept your mouth shut even when you wanted to say neither am I.

Just like what Jungkook said, the estate attorney contacted you. The meeting would be held at the office room of Taemin in Castle. It's because Sin-ae didn't want you to step inside their mansion again.

The meeting started almost immediately. As expected, Sin-ae and all of her children were here. She rolled her eyes and scoffed the moment she saw you. Seokjin and Namjoon both nodded at you, Soojin, on the other hand, embraced you.

She was no longer wearing a cervical collar. Your sister looked better—healthy. You suddenly wondered if she knew you were living with Jungkook.

Maybe? They're getting married soon. Jungkook wouldn't want a misunderstanding. He probably told her there's nothing to worry about. You were just his best friend. He only felt bad for you that's why he took you in.

"Let's start," the executor smiled tightly upon confirming to Namjoon that every family member of the Kims was already here.

The reading of the will went smoothly at first, but commotion began when the executor started uttering how the estate would be divided.

Sin-ae was the first to react. She was demanding to know why an illegitimate child like you had a share equal to her children.

"I know the law! It is clearly stated there that bastards are only entitled to receive one half of the share of the legitimate children! Namjoon! You tell them!" Sin-ae's eyes were wide as she turned to her smartest son, hoping that he could knock some senses into this stupid executor and lawyers.

The executor explained the reason before Namjoon could speak though.

"Your husband decided to divide his assets equally, Madame. The testator is free to do so." The executor even read the applicable law regarding the issue.

Sin-ae gasped dramatically. The glare she was giving you was piercing. However You didn't flinch like you used to.

For the first time, you didn't feel the need to hunch your shoulders and hide. You were just so exhausted from her drama and bullshit.

"Apart from that, your son, Kim Taehyung, renounced his inheritance."

Sin-ae caused another drama upon hearing that. She exclaimed and almost hit you in the face when the executor elucidated that Kim Taehyung's share would be given to you.

"No! I don't buy it! It’s absurd. Call my son right now! This isn't happening!" Seokjin and Namjoon held their mother, stopping her from attacking you.

You remained unfazed, though deep inside, you're dying of curiosity. Why would Taemin give you Taehyung's share? Why not to Soojin?

She's his favorite, right?

"There's no need for that. Your son signed the papers two years ago. His consent is not vitiated."

The executor continued despite Sin-ae's protest. In all honesty, the executor explained things well. However, you still couldn't seem to wrap your head around the fact that the free portion of Taemin's estate would also be given to you.

Seriously? Was this a terrible joke?

Sin-ae thought so too. She was so baffled to the point that she couldn't help but direct her anger at the executor.

"This is all lies! Where is the real last will and testament of my husband?" Sin-ae snatched the papers from the executor and tore it apart. She was shaking in indignation.

"Mother, stop it..." Seokjin's face was red. He was embarrassed. His mother was turning like a feral animal.

"No, oppa. I'm with our mother here. This seems like a joke to me too." Soojin finally spoke after a long moment of silence. She was scoffing at you while folding her arms over her chest.

You clenched your jaw, inhaling sharply.

"Why the hell would father give you more than fifty percent of his estate?" Soojin couldn't help but snarl at you too.

75% of Taemin's estate was for the compulsory heirs. The remaining 25% was free portion, meaning, he could give it to literally anyone, even if it's not a family member.

You would own that 25% share as well as your 15% share from the 75% portion. (75% divided by 5: four children and the testator's spouse = 15%) Since Taehyung renounced his share, that 15% would also belong to you.

Your total share was fifty five percent.

Holy shit.

"Unfortunately we can't ask the decedent. What we can do is honor his will. It's the right thing to do, both legally and morally speaking." The executor answered Soojin's question.

"Honor my ass! I tore the papers apart—"

"Does it matter? I'm sure there's another copy." You cut Sin-ae off, startling her and the rest of the family. As a matter of fact, Soojin's mouth dropped on the floor. Sin-ae's eyes darkened as she cursed you.

Namjoon tried to keep his face impassive but you saw how his eyes quivered. Seokjin flinched but you didn't get to see his reaction that much since he was busy calming his mother down.

"And if you have concerns, I think it's better to settle this in court." You weren't sure where you got the courage to speak up like this.

You just said you're tired and yes, that's true.

You were tired. Tired of getting stepped on and tired of being hated when you're literally just existing. Why did people hate you so much when all you ever did was be kind and respectful to them?

Was it true? Did people think they could harm you just because you're not fighting back? Was this really how the world worked?

If it was, then you had to fight.

"Are you challenging me, huh, bastard?" Sin-ae tried to attack you, but instead of accepting the blow, you square your shoulders like you were ready to fight.

As usual, Seokjin embraced her mother, telling her softly to calm down—that lashing out on people wouldn't do her any good.

"I don't care! I will beat the shit out of that bastard until she learns her place!" Sin-ae spitted, you saw how it landed on the floor.

"I think I am capable of knowing on my own where I belong, eomeoni." You said eomoni just to piss her off.

It worked. Her face screamed murder, it's just like the way she glared at you when she found out you're her husband's bastard.

Back then, you felt humiliated. You wanted to either run for the hill or get on your knees and beg for her forgiveness.

You drilled it in your head that it was your fault her family's breaking apart. You ruined their happy life.

Your existence ruined their peace.

You really did.

Or rather, you would.

You would ruin their peace.

Because three days after you found out that shocking fact that you're inheriting more than half of your father's estate, you came to know another shocking thing.

A thing that shook you to the core.

A thing that made you realize this is the last straw.

You were no longer going to allow the Kims to step on you.

Definitely not after you heard Soojin and Sin-ae talking about this:

"I should be the next chairperson! No one else!"

"You will be." Sin-ae grabbed her daughter's shoulders and looked her straight in the eyes. "Don't worry, Soojin-ah. It doesn't matter if that bastard has a bigger share in the company now. No one would want her to be the next chairperson. It's just you or Jungkook..."

"We have to convince Jungkook to side with us!" Your sister cried.

Sin-ae nodded her head, desperate to sooth Soojin's worries.

"I can handle Jungkook, but you have to promise me you'll handle yourself, okay? I can't deal with the both of you at the same time. Please, Soojin-ah, you need to be careful. No one should know our secret."

You furrowed your brow. Secret? What secret?

The answer was revealed to you at once.

"I destroyed all evidence." Soojin sighed, she was saying all these things confidently but you saw fear dancing in her eyes.

"No one would know I was actually the one leading the construction of that building. Father carried my sins in his grave, mother. I promise you that."

They said promises were meant to be broken.

They're right.

Soojin knew it too.

She knew it because right after those words came out of her mouth, her gaze landed on you.

Shock and Fear.

These were the two emotions that could be seen on her face.

You heard and that’s when Soojin knew she fucked up.

@enide-s-dear and @katajainen both requested this list – something with Thranduil not being, to quote Enide, “a huge racist bitch.” I tend to seek out good-Thranduil fics when I can, so I’m happy to compile this list! Again, obligatory reminder that this list is not exhaustive and only the fics that I can think of in the time of compilation: I know there is other great stuff out there!

A matter of pride by Enide_Dear

Summary: Gimli gets abducted by bandits when visiting Mirkwood. Thranduil does not take lightly on the hospitality and protection of his kingdom getting violated. That is all the lies behind his slight overreactions.

My favorite Thranduil-Gimli relationship dynamic, without question, is when they both cling to the pretense of disliking each other but secretly everyone knows they actually like each other a lot, and this fic delivers. I have a known soft spot for damsel!Gimli and berserker!Legolas, which both play in this story, but Thranduil is the real star, and I love him dearly.

I Walked With You (Once Upon A Dream) by The_Dwelf

Summary: Kori is just a regular Dwarf, except, he isn't. He is Gimli's reicarnation, he has been dreaming of his past life since he was a child, and now that he's old enough to leave Erebor, he's certain of his condition. With unexpected help from a very shocked Elvenking, he will find a way to rejoin Legolas, at any costs. Angst, fluff, porn and (spoiler?) a happy ending.

I’m recommending this fic for so much more than just the reclist prompt – it’s a wonderful reincarnation AU complete with fluff, angst, delicious hurt/comfort, and just a little smut, for spice. But Thranduil is amazing – and in fact the driver of the plot here, the one trying his hardest to reunite the two lovers – no matter what he has to do in the process.

Northern Babylon by icarus_chained

Summary: After four years fighting the war in the south, Gimli and Legolas have come back to their home city of New Rhovanion changed, and perhaps for the better. Gimli tries to make Elven Councillor Thranduil understand this, and understand that maybe there's hope for more than just Gimli and Legolas as well.

So I love this fic for the combination steampunk/solarpunk setting (I might be wrong about those things; I don’t really know aesthetics) and the AU just a tilt off from canon but still following the same general trajectory – the worldbuilding is amazing and I wish there were 100k of it. But this fic as it is is amazing – a serious, hopeful, painful conversation between Gimli and Thranduil in which Thranduil’s history and trauma is palpable to the reader even if we don’t know much about how it would have played out in this story. And a conversation in which they come around to grudging respect for one another.

INSIDE THE STONE by rubyelf

Summary: As close as the elf and dwarf have become, Legolas always seems to keep his secrets. A dangerous encounter while traveling in Mirkwood gives Gimli a chance to have his questions answered... if he wants to.

This is one of my favorite specific tropes - Legolas and Gimli are returning to someone’s home, and one of them is injured. This time it’s Legolas in Mirkwood, and the process of healing leads to some...revelations. Of a sexual nature. Read for a particular characterization of Legolas and a Thranduil who doesn’t quite get his son but cares nonetheless, and thinks Gimli is good for him. :) Do mind the tags, though; the consent is . . . it doesn’t cross the line to dubcon for me, but it isn’t perfectly straightforward, either.

Precious Childhood Memories by Enide_Dear

Summary: Thranduil and Glóin find they have certains things in common, such as an appreciation for fine gems, fine drink and the finely tuned fatherly mortification of their offspring

This fic. This! Fic! I couldn’t decide whether to put it on the funny list, the Thranduil list, or the meet-the-family list, but I finally decided on this one just because – way to smash the trope of Thranduil and Glóin making the single exception to elf- or dwarf-hatred and instead let them bond over their sons’ misery. It will have you howling.

Love and Fear by ginogollum, starlightwalking

Summary: Legolas rescued Gimli from an orc attack years before they were officially introduced. Gimli remembers every moment of their first meeting. Legolas...doesn't.

This is not really about Thranduil, per se – it’s more about a delightful reimagining of Legolas and Gimli and the situations in which they might have seen one another before the Quest – and about the delightful sweetness and powerful emotion of them coming to know and to love one another for real. But Thranduil makes an appearance here and there, as a cordial enough king and a deeply loving father, which is my favorite way to have him. <3

Father, Captain, and King by Thundera Tiger

Summary: Thranduil fills many roles, but one summer night, he finds himself assuming the role he loves best and gets least. Written for father's day, here's a quick look at the relationship between Mirkwood's greatest king and its most famous prince.

So this isn’t Legolas/Gimli. In fact, Gimli doesn’t appear at all – and thus this fic doesn’t really deal with Thranduil’s prejudices, or lack thereof. But I had to include it because it’s one of my favorite Legolas-and-Thranduil fics out there – a really deep, complicated exploration of what living in an ongoing siege does by necessity to relationships, and the ways that love and care persist through these struggles – even if they do have to grow a little twisted. I recommend all of Thundera Tiger’s fic, but any pre-series Mirkwood fic deals with this same thing in such loving nuance.
