Hi! I ended up finding your page based off your post of magatama beads! I was wondering if you could tell me what this pendant shape is? It's from the new show Blue Eye Samurai on netflix. Its based in 17th century Japan. The pendant decorates the handle of the main characters sword. It looks like a magatama but isn't quite the right shape? Is it a magatama or somethings else?
Hi, Blue Eye Samurai is on my list but I haven't found time to watch it yet!
As for your screenshot, I do think it is supposed to be a stylized magatama bead! As you saw in this past post, magatama can come in many shapes and sizes. This one has a pronounced "claw" tip + is strung on a himo (cord) wrapped around what look like same (shark or ray shagreen) covered tsuka (katana handle). It's a very cool detail!
Is it rough like sandpaper like the textbooks say, or are the sharks actually 'smooth bois'?
Well, I can't speak for all species definitively. But I went to the Odysea aquarium in Arizona a month ago and got to briefly touch the bamboo sharks in the touch tank.
The brown-banded bamboo shark's skin definitely had some friction, but it was barely noticeable. The white-spotted bamboo shark's skin was firmer along its back but softer on the sides.
I would say their skin did feel like sandpaper, but a very fine grade, the kind you'd use for detail sanding.
Considering that most sharks' dermal denticles run backwards, I think their skin would feel smooth to the touch as long as you stroked it front to back. I have heard about people getting 'burned' from contacting the skin of a shark that moved too quickly or the wrong way. If you have more literal hands-on experience with sharks, feel free to add your observations.
TL;DR Are sharks smooth? Depends on the species and how you're rubbing it. But yes.
(Note: yes I am aware that touching sharks with bare hands can be bad for them. These specimens were captive, and the aquarium encourages visitors to wash hands before and after interacting with the touch tank creatures.)
I know it's only Tuesday, but I think I'm gonna start posting my shark facts on Fridays just so I have some consistency. I don't know if they'll be every week or every other week, but I will post another fact on Friday:) anyway... here's another shark fact!!
Shark skin feels similar to sandpaper.
Shark skin feels exactly like sandpaper because it is made up of tiny teeth-like structures called placoid scales, also known as dermal denticles. These scales point towards the tail and help reduce friction from surrounding water when the shark swims.
This is the skin of a nurse shark. Unlike most sharks, a nurse shark has fairly smooth skin.
Did you know?
Sharks’ skin helps them swim faster!
You may know that shark skin is made up of scales called “denticles”, but you may not know that these scales are optimal for swimming quickly and quietly through the water. Each scale (shown here under an electron microscope) creates a tiny vortex and reduces both turbulence and hydrodynamic drag and enables the shark to glide almost silently through the water.
Tosses up Kirishima Moms up here. I always found it funny how small Eijirou originally had normal teeth before his quirk came in, so I imagine as he was losing baby teeth, he had a mix of shark teeth and regular human teeth for a while.
While shark teeth tend to get a lot of attention, it’s the teeth on their skin that you should brush up on! Shark skin is covered in tiny, flat pointed scales that are called dermal denticles—which literally means skin teeth. If you look at a shark’s skin under a microscope, you’ll see that the scales are a series of overlapping teeth that result in a rough texture.
These pointed scales reduce drag on sharks as they swim, making them stealthy and fast as they cut through the water. This jagged texture also keeps fouling animals (like barnacles) from being able to settle on their bodies and slow them down, which is helpful when you’re a speedy top predator.
TLDR: sharks are covered in tiny teeth and this makes them better swimmers. How’s that for a tantalizingly toothsome fact?
Since we all seem to be in agreement that the general webtoon fandom (outside of reddit, private servers, and the app) is suspiciously quiet ➡️ send me an ask!! I love love love talking about the series I'm reading and I'm more than happy to geek out with anyone who's willing to share their excitement 🥺
And send asks to each other! Become mutuals, post your opinionated rants, your webtoon rankings, character vs character, the works. Being a webtoon fan doesn't have to be a loner type of deal!
People have been bringing up the fact that Noelle has a long face in her sprites. You think it be funny if there was a comic where Susie asked "Why the long face?"
I don't think Susie has any room to talk in terms of long faces!
