Do you like your men to have private armies but prefer access to antibiotics? Come right on in...

Watching the delicious trashiness of Maid’s Revenge has inspired me to make a listing of my favorite (and not so favorite) warlord and warlord adjacent cdramas. If like me, you like your male leads with polished boots and a side of murder, come right in. From most to least fave.

Siege in Fog

My most favorite on this list, this is visually gorgeous and emotionally visceral. Plus, it’s not just ONE warlord, it’s a whole family of them! It follows a deeply dysfunctional marriage between a beautiful woman and a warlord’s second son, where they fight and angst and love and fight some more, all the while bullets are flying and bodies are piling up. If you like incredible visuals, insane chemistry, dysfunction by the bucket and not one, not two, but THREE hot warlords, come right in. It’s based on a Fei Wo Si Cun novel so I assume you know you need a lot of tissues.

To sum up:

Too Late to Say I Love You

Another FWSC adaptation! This is an older drama, done long before cdrama’s recent unwelcome slide into wholesomeness, which means epic makeouts but also a warlord that revels in murder (at one point he takes out all his potential rivals, including his loved sister’s entire fam.) The OTP is dysfunctional - they hate, then they love, then they break up but he can’t let go - and the chemistry is beyond insane, with Wallace Chung and Li Xiao Ran melting my computer. Also, for once, a happy ending!

Winter Begonia

Probably the only genuine masterpiece on the list (tho I love FWSC dysfunction best for purely personal reasons), this is a MM story (though being cdrama it’s not explicit, though quite clear) and Huang Xiaoming as a trader with a private army and Yin Zheng as an opera singer with whom he forms a bond are both!!! I highly recommend it.

City of Streamer

Should be called “City of Steamer” because those make-outs and chemistry are epic! Timmy Xu is a son of a shady businessmen (with a small army of gun happy goons) who falls hopelessly in love with an older governess (Jing Tian) who is out for revenge on his family. She starts out using him and ends up using him in a different sense, if you know what I mean! The plot derails a bit by the end but it’s still a great watch.

Maid’s Revenge

I am watching it right now. At only 10 minutes per ep, it skips plot and gives us the melo and chemistry we (and I mean I) crave and a guy whose muscles should be in a museum.

The Lady and the Liar

Hawick Lau is the ML and we all know this means “hot bastard.” He’s a crime lord with a goon squad falling for a lost heiress who loses her memory so he lies she’s his fiancee and deliciousness ensues. MMMMM

Arsenal Military Academy

Xu Kai is warlord jr but this is here mainly because of his awesome brother the businessman with murder squad. The drama is so-so (patriotism overtakes the amazing chemistry between Bai Lu and Xu Kai) but might be worth a peek.

Cruel Romance

(Can you say no to this face?)

Joey Chen has never worked in anything for me and this is no exception, but Huang Xiao Ming is dashing as hell as a sexy gangster.

Love In The Flames of War

The heroine is terrible (I kept rooting for her to get accidentally shrapnelled) but Shawn Dou is sexy as hell as a warlord. (In the novel he was apparently a rapey headcase; they made him lovely in the drama without making his wife saner which is...a choice.) I’d say worth it on FF for hotness and whippings.

The Mystic Nine

I tried. I tried to watch this drama three times. I could not. But William Chan as a warlord in a three-piece suit and cape is mega mega fine!

Fall In Love

The worst drama on this list, insulting to intelligence of anyone above pre-school level, 90% of the cast, including the leading lady, incapable of acting, a plot that makes a picture book seem complex and fashion disasters galore. However, Chen Xing Xu, playing the smirky warlord, carries this mess harder than Atlas and deserves to be in another, better drama altogether. Oh, what wouldn’t I give for him as a proper FWSC warlord!

Honorable Mention: Forward Forever - haven’t watched that one but keep meaning to.

Alterverse Characters #1

Taking a break from BNHA OCs to expand on my ones for other fandoms. Starting first with an original one.

Queenie Huang | Dianite: Splendor's (Joou Takarano) Alternate. Resident rich girl of the group but also an ice queen. She is of Chinese and Kenyan descent. Before finding out she was a Metahuman, she lived the dream; had a wealthy and loving family, was on the debate team, straight A student. Queenie had it all before she was attacked by The Hand and given to the Heroes Association.

Her powers include technopathy, metal mimicry, and metal manipulation.

Stormy Uchiyama | Stormrider: Stormchaser's (Sorami Inoue) Alternate. She's still not over finding out she's a Metahuman and having to be taken away from her own parents for her safety - still grieving the loss of all she held dear even with her older brother and cousins there to comfort her. She is Japanese and Rwandan mixed.

Her power is personal weather which allows her to generate her own personal weather patterns and phenomena based on her emotions.

Shawn Tanaka | Energizer: Chargeman's (Shukara Inoue) Alternate. Shawn is Japanese-American. He enjoys his new life in the Heroes Association because he gets to do as many sports as he pleases, particularly wrestling. He has a huge crush on Stormy and always makes his feelings for her known.

His powers include energy manipulation, energy mimicry, and superhuman strength.

Allen Diaz | Digger: Demoman's Alternate. Allen is Japanese and Filipino mixed. Unlike most of his colleagues, Allen is actually glad that he's away from his parents because he feels like him having powers is a curse that will bring his family nothing but pain and suffering (even though his parents are accepting of their son being a Metahuman).

His powers include earth manipulation, drilling, and jackhammer motion.

Ravi Bergstrom | Deep Chill: Jack Frost's Alternate. Ravi is of mixed Indian and Swedish descent. His older brother actually is a hero and works at the Heroes Association so he doesn't have a lot to worry about. One of Ravi's biggest dreams is to be a private investigator for all things Metahuman.

They're not too worried about not being with their family anymore, they know that they'll all be reunited one day. In the meantime, he writes songs and works on his guitar playing to one day form his own band. He has a huge crush on Queenie.

Their powers include sound, ink, and darkness manipulation. He also has a sonic scream.

Brandon Vega | Phantom: Hades's Alternate. He's Filipino-American. Much like Ravi, Brandon's cousins work for the Heroes Association so he really has nothing to worry about in the family department. What he is worried about, however, are his uncontrollable powers and the presence of The Hand. Not to mention that he's next in line to a Demon hunting guild.

His powers include probability manipulation, pryokinesis, telepathy, and black magic.

Rosita Choi | Nature Girl: Persephone's Alternate. She's Venezuelan and Korean. Determined to make the best of her new life and her Metahuman powers, Rosi invites the others to go on picnics and other outdoor activities with her. She has a crush on Brandon.

Her powers include plant manipulation, animal communication, and plant mimicry.

Tamira Musa | Dreamer: Sweet Dream's Alternate. She's Nigerian-American. She's become quite adjusted to her new situation and has made a few friends with the other girls. She knows that she'll be safe from harm by The Hand. Tamira seems to have caught the attention of a vigilante named Nightmare.

Her powers include dream manifestation, phasing, flight, and telekinesis.

My review of Tribes and Empires: Storm of Prophecy / 九州·海上牧云记

Set in the fictional historical universe of Novoland, Tribes and Empires follows the interconnected journeys of several protagonists whose lives are dragged into the power struggles between warring clans and rival factions.

Stylistically, this is one of the most impressive dramas I’ve ever seen. The level of detail in this production is exquisite, from the sets to the costumes to the etiquette. Most importantly, these details contribute to the story by creating vivid and memorable settings within the Novoland universe. You can really feel the unique cultures of every region and the unique atmosphere of every household.

The drama also has a huge cast of characters. These characters are well-written and well-acted across the board.

Here are the protagonists: Huang Xuan plays Muyun Sheng, a prince of the Muyun clan which rules the Duan Dynasty. When he gets swept into a world of magic, he goes down an increasingly volatile path. Shawn Dou plays Muru Hanjiang of the Muru clan, a military clan that is sworn to protect the Duan Dynasty and support the Muyun clan. However, it is prophesied that Muru Hanjiang will be the future ruler. Xu Lu plays Su Yuning, the prophesied future empress. She must marry a Muyun prince but it is Muru Hanjiang that she loves. Zhou Yiwei plays Shuofeng Heye, the survivor of a northern tribe that was massacred after they unknowingly gave shelter to an outlaw of the Duan Dynasty.

Among the main storylines, my favourite was probably Muru Hanjiang’s. But I also loved following Shuofeng Heye’s story and seeing the darkest corners of the Duan Dynasty.

Additionally, there is a huge cast of fascinating supporting characters. Some of my favourites were the ambitious and cold-blooded Nanku Yueli (played by Wan Qian), the crafty and elusive Muyun De (played by Zhang Xiaochen), and the ethereal Pan Xi (played by Janice Man).

The writing has both strong points and weak points. The most impressive part is probably the worldbuilding. The story spans many regions. Each region feels distinct and complete in its own right, but you can also feel that all of the regions belong within the same universe and are constrained by the same rules. As you discover the fantasy elements, the rules begin to stretch and change, yet the universe continues to feel tangible and real.

All of the parallel storylines are tied together well and they intersect in interesting ways.

For me, there were parts that felt a bit slow, especially in Muyun Sheng’s storyline. But it still held my interest.

This is a rare historical drama that is undubbed. The whole cast is great and delivers their lines with a kind of raw emotion that you don’t usually see in ancient dramas.

Here’s the catch: the ending is super unsatisfying because they didn’t finish telling the story. And no, there won’t be a sequel. There is so much build-up throughout the drama, and you can feel that you’re on the verge of witnessing a great story, but it never actually gets there.

So have fun watching 75 episodes of pure build-up, I guess...

But, to be honest, I did enjoy it a lot! It’s a very well-made drama. It has its imperfections but the strengths absolutely make up for the weaknesses. It’s still a fantastic story, it’s just an incomplete one. And the story is told in a brilliant way through the impressive production quality and Cao Dun’s unmatched directing style.
