We all know what we are getting in for, 7 episodes of BLduggery. To crane your neck as you drive by the car wreck or not... that is the question. Me? I'm wallowing in the guts.

Episode 1 - In which I craft an ode to Dumpster Fires Everywhere

I am sorry, but they opened with Battle Hymn of the Republic for PrapaiSky’s wedding? I busted out laughing.

Honestly? And this is not usually a criticism I lob at Mame ( I know is there anything I have lobbed at her?) but the leads seem a bit stiff and uninspired.

Episode 2 - What’s this? Oh is that boredom?

What are these boys in these office BLs doing behind their desks on those computers? They never actually seem to be working at all. They’re like brochure stock art ads for boys on computers.

I had to skip most of the humiliating stuff with the food in the car and whatever was going on because… aargh.

They keep ordering food in this episode of nobody’s eating it. And it looks really good and I’m hungry and this is very upsetting to me.

Lom is just totally jerking Nuea around. Just tell him what your relationship is with the bride.

There’s no need to be so fucking coy about it.

I love the flaming yelling fit from Nuea tho.

It was also a good kiss.

But that’s what we expect from a Mame.

Mame giveth and mame taketh away.

Somewhat dull episode frankly. Even with the kiss.

Sigh. What have I become?

Episode 3 - WHAT IS THIS? There is nothing about this episode that pleased me even a tiny bit. Except Noel’s hair. But that wasn’t part of the script.

Buckle up, I got A LOT to say.

It’s a pleasure to welcome you back to your normal and expected ABL meets Mame interface where... ABL LOSES THEIR TINY MIND.

THIS IS NOT AN EXCUSE for lying. For manipulation. For not understanding how you’re betraying another person’s faith in himself.

Especially not if you’re in the position of power: social, cultural, employer.

Why doesn’t Mame EVER understand this?

You can’t have a character that is sincere and earnest in love and yet entirely lacking in all forms of integrity.

This is driving me crazy.

No one is in the show is as crazy as this show is making me.

I started this episode wanting to punch Lom, and I’m ending this episode wanting to punch Lom.

That’s a mame plot for ya.

No character development at all, on any side of the screen.

And someone, mostly me, is always left with a mad desire to punch something.

Frankly, I kinda want to punch the screen.

Episode 4 - I Am Going to Start Drinking

I like consent especially when “no” is activated. But this being Mame she shoe horns it in and then the seme ignores it.

It’s so awkward. She’s actually incapable of making any non-problematic tropes sexy. It’s like there is only one lane for her shows and that lane is...

My “Punch Lom in the face 2023” campaign continues.

I don’t see how he can ever become a sympathetic character. He just trundles along lying by omission (when speaking up would make everything better). I hate him.

I’m glad we get to see Nuea suffering, now show Lom what he has done and make him lose the boy.

No? No.

Instead Lom gets rewarded with sex for being a sleazy lying gutless jerk? Well terds to both you fine gentlemen.

I mean, very gay of you, Nuea sweetie.

“Because just SOOOO hot” being the #1 excuse in my personal “I slept with WHAT?” experience. (Heh, to be fair I’m often the WHAT? in that equation. I live to be someone’s bad mistake... just not Lom-level-bad.

Where was I?

Oh yeah, Gaga has the sex scene. FYI. Came outta nowhere, that sex scene did. Very disjointed... not that kind of joint. Not that kind either.

It’s not a particularly impressive sex scene, which is disappointing. Because WHY ELSE WOULD WE BE WATCHING?

I mean, if you’re going to have your characters (and by extension us) forfeit all integrity and taste in order to watch your stupid show, the least you could do is give us decent chemistry.

I’m not saying this is worse than LITA but at least LITA was hot.

It wasn’t anything else. But it was hot.

Imma preemptively point out that I am aware that bearding and lavender marriages are still quite common all over the world. I would whole heartedly support a good depiction of it. (Even one where it stays fix in the beard position.) This is NOT a good depiction.

I shall draw your attention to 2017′s rarely discussed (not really BL) We Are Gamily out of... you guessed it... Taiwan. You can argue with me about this only AFTER you have watched that.

Okay, back to the trash watch.

Episode 5 - I Neglected to Drink and that was a Mistake

Ate a lot of crap traveling home today (feel gross) + tumblr new desktop UX has me pissed + Mame & alcohol? I’m not sure I’d survive. So no alcohol.

Here we go.

Poor Nuea feels so guilty.

Please save me from ever feeling that way after sex. *shudder*

Before you ask, to the best of my knowledge, I have never slept with a married person. I’ve slept with married people... married to each other mind you... but I hope that makes it clear everyone was consensual. (I recommend it, by the way. Being a unicorn is lots of fun.)

Where was i?

We were dealing with punching Lom not my misspent youth.

(looks at calendar. wait, that was last month.)

It wasn’t a physical punch but a verbal one is almost as good. (And can be more damaging in the long run.)

Mame punches her characters all the time. And no character ever deserved a punching more than Lom.

I do wish there was a nice boy back home to scoop Nuea up.

That line of boys wanting him, could we see it, not be told it?

I do like the random sinshine hyung side couple.

Omg. COLD MICKY D?!

That might just be the most objectionable moment in this whole show.

And that’s a tall order.

Pun intended.

Was I pleased we got multiple characters who are just outright gay? Yes.

But representation has not been one of Mame’s issues.

I mean Tharn was one of the first openly gay seme leads in a Thai BL, and she also had rep for lube and condoms in that show. That’s not the issue with TharnType. Or Mame.

Her issues tend to revolve around story structure and audience manipulation.

Was I pleased that Nuea knew what was going on? Yes, I’m glad he’s not totally clueless.

I still want Lom to be punched in the face and I’m still mad at this show.

Episode 6 - Too hot to drink, still a Mistake

I finally figured out my real problem with Lom. It’s not that he was closeted and manipulative without good reason (although he is). It’s not that he lied and strung Nuea along for a lot longer than was necessary (because he did). It is that he basically does everything for himself and his own ends. Even when he’s confessing his love it comes off as flat because it isn’t about Nuea and what Nuea wants or needs, it’s about Lom wants.

Hanging a lampshade on it doesn’t make it right.

It was good bridge kiss. And car kiss. And sex kisses.

There is something corrupted grunge romantic asking the person you love most in the world to hide that love and climb back into the closet with you for the sake of your nasty arse family (is that a queer taboo, hum). I’m not saying lavender marriages are necessarily wrong, I’m just saying it’s an interesting plot twist in a BL.

I think we HAVE to hold this up and examine it in stark contrast to the final ep of Bad Buddy. It’s interesting how the closet retreat didn’t bother me at all in BB, and I thought it was quite a clever and elegant ending twist. Whereas here it’s just annoying. It’s not making me as angry as it probably should. But it is annoying as a narrative conceit and denouement.

Can I ask a question.

It’s not a serious question, of course.

What is up with all of the shows this year having dates on lakes featuring that thing where you ride a funny little floaty-boat while being dragged behind a fast boat. I’m sure it has a name, but I could not care less. New sponsor?

The sex scene was fine. But I have to say, I wish they had leaned into the fact that Lom is a virgin and Nuea has more experience. It would’ve been a really interesting dynamic to see honestly represented on screen.

In conclusion, Nuea is a saint and next week everything comes to a head that didn’t already get head this episode.

Episode 7 - Finally I’m drinking!

I am having a tiki beverage this evening to round out this show. Coconut rum and mango popping Boba are involved. Don’t judge. I have the alcohol palate of a 7 year old.

I’m ready! Let’s shave this beard!

And, well, that was a pink saturated drama of the mothers in law. Enjoyable lakorn style scenery chewing. The ladies seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Lom pretending to be sad and pitiful. Also funny.

Using his evil against his mom is acceptable. Suddenly his manipulative lying ways are working in the right direction.

Honestly?

This was a fine ending, I’m not mad at it.

They managed to keep Lom in character until the end, he remained deceitful. I would never trust him, but clearly Nuea is willing to ride that dragon.

I guess 7/10?

If you can tolerate Mame and liars (kinda the same thing) you’ll be fine with this show.

But, frankly? Lom as a character would sit better amongst the drama bananas of Only Friends.

In summation:

A lackluster Mame offering with less of her usual stellar chemistry, but all of her usual manipulation. An innocent wedding planner falls haplessly and hopelessly in love with a groom who relentlessly pursues him, even though he’s about to marry someone else.

Delicious in Dungeon / Dungeon Meshi Episode 1

WOW the pacing on this is great. That was my first major impression of this entire episode.

Overall Score so far: 8/10

Dungeon Meshi hits several sweet spots for things I like in a manga/anime - cooking and well drawn food, and fantasy and dungeons. But I never took the time to try out the manga. Maybe the art didn't stick out for me? I tried reading it before the anime came out, just to get a feel for it, but it couldn't keep my attention.

The anime however.

Episode 1 handled all of what I could get through in the manga, and ITS. SO. CUTE.

The food is gorgeously drawn, the characters are adorable, the D&D vibes are immaculate, and the monsters and the food they become are fascinating!

I've only given it an 8/10 because it remains to be seen just how many hooks this might snag in my heart if what I've overheard about the manga being 'soul healing' is true.

The first think I can tell is that this is from a slightly older manga, with Marcille being a very classic/traditional tsundere (and/or possibly tsukomi character?). She is the tsundere type that future tsunderes were based off, and so TO ME she's both somewhat annoying and also more bearable than today's tsunderes.

Sorry Marcille.

I actually didn't like her all that much in the parts I read of the manga, and while her reactions are realistic and serve a purpose to counter balance Laios' nonchalant ability to eat the monsters that try to kill them, her reactions also annoyed me. The 1st anime episode made them much more bearable, and I grew to like her! I hope future episodes do her justice and that she's not delegated solely to being the one to dig in her heels when they eat something new.

Laios is adorable and just really really really wants to share his special interest with his friends, and I love him. He is a cinnamon roll that most be protected but can probably protect himself. I love that he has a cookbook and has just been WAITING to try out some of these recipes.

Chilchuk is Liam O'Brien from Critical Role and you can't tell me otherwise. Specifically his halfling character, Orym of the Air Ashari, with a bit of Vax'ildan thrown in for good measure. I'm excited to explore his story.

Senshi is goals. I wanna but a tough old dwarf roaming a dungeon for food.

I know it will likely get compared with what Capybara and I jokingly call "The Amazon Anime" -- Campfire Cooking in Another World -- and that will always hold a special place in my heart because I stumbled across the light novel when the manga only had about 2 or 3 chapters scanlated online, and never in a million years thought it would get an anime. Where as this is a big name manga that's been running since 2014 and finished last year in September 2023.

They're both cooking animes that deal with fantasy food, but Campfire Cooking is an isekai and all the animation budget went into making the food look D E L I C I O U S, and Dungeon Meshi is going to be far more well rounded story even while being a gag anime.

It's also got some fun Voice Actors!!

Laios, our hungry knight is voiced by Kumagai, Kentarou, who mostly plays supporting roles in a few popular anime and lots of smaller animes, but has spent most of his career voicing BL Drama CDs >o>

Marcille, our elven mage and tsundere, is voiced by Senbongi, Sayaka - Shuna from TenSura, Mumei from Kabaneri, and Haru from Beastars!

Chilcuk, our cute little halfling rogue, is voiced by Tomari, Asuna who, I IMMEDIATELY HEARD GOBUTA FROM TENSURA. She also play Kyou Souma from Fruits Basket. She has a very cute voice.

Senshi, our fearless dwarf, is voiced by Naka, Hiroshi who is best know as Garp from One Piece, Luffy's Grandpa, as well as Gamabunta, Naruto's giant frog.

Anyways, I'm excited for the next episode! Episode 1 was a good introductory episode, with cooking, hunting, and laying out their goals for the coming journey.

Addressing Ableism In The Submas Fandom And Its Impact Again

The fact that I know multiple neurodivergent people who have bad feelings arise from seeing any content, including official, of Warden Ingo due to an influx people turning the Submas fandom into an ableist playground in the wake of PLA speaks volumes.

Before I continue, I want to stress: I am not calling anyone in particular out.

Unknowingly making ableist content does not make you a bad person. Everyone still has things to learn, everyone has room for change and growth. Self-education and critical thinking are very important here (and everywhere). A desire to correct a mistake, change, and grow from it is better all around than digging your heels in and refusing to budge or listen.

I am not responsible for bad faith interpretations or other potential misinterpretations of me addressing these issues that have personally affected friends, acquaintances, and myself, should people choose to make these interpretations.

I am also not responsible for the reading comprehension or critical thinking skills of others. If you don’t read the entire post and choose to be reactionary towards it, including making assumptions about what was said or putting words in my mouth, I am not at fault.

Bl*nkshippers are not welcome on my content.

I can't begin to forgive the contingency of the fandom that made neurodivergent people feel unwelcome and alienated in their own space, and made them wonder if other Submas fans, or even people in general, even see them as human.

Given that it’s widely accepted that Ingo and Emmet are autistic-coded characters, the fandom could have been a safer and enjoyable space for neurodivergent (but especially autistic) people. It could have even been a refuge for people upset by the uncertainty we were left with due to PLA being incomplete. Instead, a large contingency of fans took one look at Submas and went "how sad/unhinged/angsty can I make the train blorbos?" and decided disability, trauma, and mental illness were acceptable to use as props.

To the people who have been doing things along these lines (but with especially Emmet!); this tells neurodivergent people that you think they're unhinged, will hurt others if given an opening to do so, and portraying Ingo and/or Emmet as never having been human, turned into something nonhuman (as in Submas is singled out as nonhuman, and NOT in something like a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon AU or other AU where everyone is not human), or otherwise being not in control of their own actions is telling neurodivergent people that you don't even see them as human. And yes, you can be sending this message even if you yourself are neurodivergent!

Because of all this, I now know multiple people who do not want to see any content involving Warden Ingo, or PLA at all due to the negative association from the fandom, and even some who have stopped engaging with Submas in varying degrees.

I've made it very clear in other posts that I don't like how fandom is on tumblr for many reasons and that I do not consider myself part of the Submas fandom. But the Submas fandom has further turned me off to fandom as a whole, and I currently do not wish to engage with PLA content outside of making reassurance posts compiling evidence Ingo will or has gone home.

My roommate barely posts Submas art anymore because the pervasive ableism got to be too much. This is saying something considering she’s the author of the Submas primer many people, probably including many of those making ableist content, reblogged. She’s also the author of a post detailing Submas as autistic-coded characters. She’s been alienated from a community that she had provided a ton of research for! Please think about that for a second.

Other people don’t want to see Submas interacting with certain characters ever again (namely Volo), because of the ableist content created around their interactions, or even ships.

And if you’ve been around since at least PLA, you may have noticed that there are a few people who frequently posted about Submas as well as the ableism, who haven’t engaged with Submas content in a long time.

Fandom shouldn’t become an alienating or even hostile space for people who just want wholesome or comforting content, or simply want to see characters they like or even find representation in NOT being treated as ableist puppets or being so ooc with angst and ableism they’ve essentially become the artist or writer’s OCs. But unfortunately that's the track the Submas fandom seems to frequently head down in the wake of PLA.

If you’d like more info about the ableism that has been going on in Submas fan content, there is a list of posts here, but this is by no means exhaustive.

This is a post I previously referenced in one of my posts about the ableism about the issue of making Emmet violent and traumatized for entertainment purposes and why it’s problematic to use trauma as a prop.

And here is a post I made (with my roommate’s addition) addressing the issue of people thinking ableist portrayals aren’t harmful or don’t have an impact on real people.

And if you’re going to continue to make ableist content of Submas (or any other fandom) without any regard as to how your work impacts others, then there isn’t much anyone can do. But don’t be surprised if people choose not to engage with you or your content.

I’ve lurked on this blog long enough. Now I want to talk about my own story.

For context, I’m a bisexual teenage girl living in a very liberal city. I’ve had Tumblr since middle school and was on board entirely with the “LGBTQIAP” community. However, in the following years, I began questioning their rhetoric more and more. I failed to see queer theorists and liberal feminists be able to define pansexuality, how a medical condition such as intersex qualifies as being part of a community oppressed on the basis of same sex attraction, how queer is a slur, so on and so forth. So, my acronym shortened to LGBT. I wanted to include this portion because people do claim that “saying xyz isn’t part of the LGBT community is TERF rhetoric!” nowadays, and also to show how easily swayed my disposition was to the point where I could include titles with undefinable definitions.

Here’s where the T came in. Two people have medically transitioned in my high school, both males. One was an out and proud gay male for a while, only to transition while he was 16-17. He was known as just “the gay guy” by just about everyone, and his only friends were women. The other one is one I’ll talk more about in detail.

He’s an autogynephile. I initially was supportive of him, even going as far as to assist him in self medication when we were in school. However, more and more of what he said began to unnerve me. First off, he said he had sexual fantasies of being a transgender sex slave that would become a biological girl in the process of intercourse before transition. Another was that he claimed he dated his ex girlfriend post transition, only to break up because “she doesn’t like girls”. My brain struggled to reconcile how anything about him changed except for his vocal fry, hormonal balance, and wardrobe. If he was truly a woman all along like TRA me claimed, didn’t that mean she’s bisexual for dating him pre-transition and that rejecting him is prejudiced? There’s more skinwalking when it came to his identity, as he stole the current name he is going as from a girl he used to like, and outright admitted that he adapted his personality and mannerisms from another girl in our school (for context, she is very short, Asian, wore cute blouses/skirts, had a feminine voice, and a lot of boys liked her). He would ask his friends whether they saw similarities between him and her, and get excited when they said they could see the resemblance. If we were still in high school, I would tell her that nearly 3-4 years after contacting one another, this man is still trying to model himself after her. Skinwalking much? Some side notes are that he enjoys talking about lesbians, lesbian catgirls, and anime lesbian catgirls. When I confronted him about whether he was lesbian or not, he claimed that he’s bisexual but only liked one or two guys ever. Even TRA me was skeptical, having seen gay/lesbian history and experiences co opted by fellow bisexuals, but I let it slide on the basis of “maybe he’s just misguided.” When someone tells you who you are, believe them.

Initially, I discovered a radical feminist Twitter account and began reading, and I pieced everything together. Being East Asian, the transgender community has taken their cultural and racial fetish for Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Thai BL/GL content way too far. I admit, I have pangs of doubt that some of the stories I’m reading on here are fake or caricaturized when mentioning their lesbian porn & catgirl obsessions, but I know my own life & I have no doubt more of these men exist & form communities together. I just can’t believe that they are a legally protected class & that it’s gotten to this point. Entertain their delusions or get doxxed. The 40-50 something gender critical community on Reddit and Twitter don’t get how harrowing it is for young LGB people to have to sit through being lumped with a community that is destroying the definition of woman and all sex based protections that come with it.

Chu Sang Woo is a junior computer science majoring student who prizes reason, rules, and a rigid sense of what is right above all else. As part of his university work, he is told to work on a group project for the liberal arts, whereby the group is required to make a final presentation in order to pass the module. But as the rest of the group – whom he knows nothing about – have decided to leave him to do all the work on his own, he decides to remove their names, and make the presentation in his name.

But little did he know that when he did this, he would deal a heavy blow to the academic prospects of a senior student named Jang Jae Young. The latter, a design major, is Chu Sang Woo’s polar opposite. He is stylish, fun-loving, and – above all – extraordinarily popular. He is the closest thing the college has to a superstar! But when his credit for the liberal arts project is taken away, his grand plans to study abroad are suddenly thrown up in the air. He seeks out Chu Sang Woo and is of a mind to torment him. As of 2022, This is My Favourite Korean BL Drama

I do not usually crave a second season for dramas or any shows that already closed off nicely in the first instalment. However, I am seriously craving for another season of Semantic Error and it's mainly so that I get to see our two main leads' chemistry again. A drama can have an unoriginal plot like Semantic Error but when you have a cast with this amount chemistry, it makes the show a lot more enjoyable to watch. I am really quite amused that the casting team was able to find the right group of people to play the roles in this drama, the casting did great and the casts themselves did wonderfully. I am very happy with the fact that in spite of Semantic Error being short web-drama, Park Seo Ham and Park Jae Chan were so well bonded. Their bond really played a big part in the reason I thoroughly enjoyed this drama.

I would also like to add that I appreciate the lack of "dreamy-ness" this drama has. The vibe Semantic Error gave felt more like your normal Korean romance drama, if you get what I mean.

Now, let's talk about the plot for a little while. I briefly mentioned that the plot was unoriginal and I stand by that, especially since I read a lot and I used to read fan-fictions. However, because this drama only has a few short episodes and it was rather quick-paced, I didn't have time to get bored with the cliches. The problems Jaeyoung and Sangwoo were met with in their relationship also made sense for the storyline, and since they were solved before I could come up with any criticism, I really have no complains. No complains regarding the plot at all.

Before I end this review, I need to mention Choi Yu Na and Ryu Ji Hye. Yuna is an amazing woman, personally I am straight but I think I am in love with this character. We need more of Yuna in Korean dramas, gay or straight or bi, anything, just more roles like her. And Jihye, I don't think we appreciate characters like Jihye enough. She's a character created solely as the third party in a monogamous relationship but I've realised we don't get enough of female third parties that step back without going through that vendetta stage, especially in Korean dramas. Korean show writers, can you please work to fix that? A role like Jihye can remain nice even after a rejection.

Black Twitter reacts to Jack Harlow finding out Brandy and Ray J are siblings in wild Hot 97 interview

Jack Harlow might want to log off from social media for a few days and listen to some 90s R&B.

Black Twitter is not happy with Jack Harlow right now. Today (May 11), jaws were dropped when the “First Class” rapper discovered the Vocal Bible Brandy and entertainment mogul Ray J were siblings.

While visiting New York’s Hot 97 radio station, radio host Ebro Darden and crew challenged Harlow to a little game of guess that song.

As Darden cues up Brandy’s 1998 hit, “Angel in Disguise,” most figured it would be an easy win for the 24-year-old. They were wrong. Very wrong.

Darden and his co-hosts are seen nodding their heads to the tune as they give Harlow a chance to play the game.

“Oh, uh, Aaliyah?” Harlow asks.

“Nope!” the hosts yell after Harlow confuses the two very different artists.

“Stay with it, stay with it,” they urge him while giving the young rapper another shot. Some sing along while waiting for his answer.

The intro to the song is almost over and Harlow still can’t name the artist or track. One of the hosts asks, “Do you want me to give him a hint?”

“She had a TV show. She starred in a TV show,” Laura Stylez tells him.

“Tell me another hint,” Harlow says. Rosenberg chimes in with, “Her brother is the reason a lot of people are famous.”

With no response from Harlow, Ebro adds, “Her brother had an amazing sex tape.”

After several seconds go by, the “What’s Poppin” rapper asks, “Who’s Ray J’s sister?”

The hosts are shocked. While some throw their heads back with laughter, another can be heard saying, “Yo, he’s serious.” One host comes to his defense reminding listeners that Harlow is only 24.

“Brandy and Ray J are siblings?” Harlow asks as those in the room yell “Yes” in unison.

“Nobody’s ever told me that in my life,” the rapper responds.

Once Twitter got wind of the interview, they were flabbergasted. Most users seemed to feel that Harlow not recognizing the song was absurd.

“Not recognizing Brandy’s voice is why he shouldn’t be doing black music,” one person tweeted. Another added, “Brandy had one of the most recognizable voices. Ugh these generations of rappers.”

Others went a bit easier on the rapper. “Y’all are doing a LOT about Jack Harlow not knowing Brandy and Ray J. As if we don’t see young Black people ‘discover’ new things daily. Hell y’all find out Bobby Caldwell is white every three months.”

Let's talk about...Pat's Salome t-shirt

I've already partially written about this shirt (and its connection to my all-time favourite of all of Pat's shirts) - in that it could have been used to connect Pat with Ink through the shared colour of the t-shirt print and Ink's mustard yellow top (to offer the subconscious implication that she's might be a 'love interest' for Pat)...

...of course, the choice of this t-shirt could also be completely arbitrary...

...but I've always been curious as to whether I could find a deeper meaning/reasoning behind its inclusion here (even if it's just a complete coincidence). After re-watching ep 4 last weekend, I finally decided to do a bit of googling...

And what I discovered is that the name "Salome" and the picture don't seem to originally go together...at least not that I could find...so I wonder if they made this shirt themselves...and therefore why (or maybe someone else made it and they just found it 🤷🏽‍♀️).

I'll begin with the picture. It is a painting called Portrait of Sabartes, by Pablo Picasso in 1939. Jaime Sabartes was Picasso's lifelong friend, secretary, and chief "legend-monger" (he basically sang Picasso's praises to whomever listened). Sabartes asked Picasso to paint him as a courtier to Philip II...

"Portraying Sabartes as [such] is amusing as this was the role he played in the court of Picasso; that of the loyal servant following his master from Paris to Antibes to Royan. Although Sabartes was often represented by critics as a pathetically faithful dog, Picasso no doubt respected and returned his loyalty - albeit in his own fashion."

I know this is a very very tenuous link...but I couldn't help jumping on the fact that we see Pat as a faithful puppy... Yes, it's really a stretch to think Aof/the costume designer might have meant this with the use of this picture...(*she whispers* but what if they did?). Another less tenuous link is just the fact that Picasso and Sabartes were born in the same year and were lifelong friends...just like Pat and Pran 🤷🏽‍♀️ (I also like that Pat also wears a couple of other Picasso-esque shirts in the series...although I haven't been able to discover if they actually are Picasso prints yet.)

Anyway, onto "Salome" and this is a little more concrete, I think.

Salome is "commonly identified with the daughter of Herodias who, according to accounts in the Gospel of Mark and the Gospel of Matthew, danced for Herod Antipas" in exchange for the head of John the Baptist. Salome has been depicted in many forms in paintings, literature, films, sculpture, music...you name it...often as a "lascivious woman, a temptress who lures men away from salvation" - or a femme fatale.

In episode 4, Ink is introduced as a kind of femme fatale - or faen fatale as @absolutebl would say: "This is when the story introduces a character whose sole purpose is to drive a wedge between the main BL pair." Luckily, in Bad Buddy, this trope was one of many that were subverted and it became clear quite quickly (in the most delightful way!) that Ink actually wasn't a 'traditional' fean fatale character. But having Pat wear this t-shirt in this episode, in a scene where it was implied that Ink might be a love interest for him...well, whether planned or not, I think it's genius.

But, along with the above, as I was reading the wikipedia page (I know, not always the best source🤷🏽‍♀️), I came across this:

"Salome is shown in the mystery play as a personification of Carl Jung's pleasure in The Red Book. [...] Through interactions with Salome, Jung learns of how he neglected the emotional feeling side of his personality and the difficulties of accepting that part of himself that he suppressed."

Now, I think this really is just my brain making connections between the above quote and posts I've read recently about Pat...BUT I just love that people have recently been writing about Pat's character growth...and about his repressed emotions and his realisation of them. Others have written so well on this subject that I'm not going to attempt my own words...I'll just link them here for you to read if you're interested: this post by @scarydeul; this one by @grapejuicegay; and this by @goldenmorningglory.

Whether planned or not, this shirt is SO GOOD - I love that I can find all these connections to the characters and the story - and I feel like it should actually have an honorary spot in my top ten of Pat's shirts from the series. 😂

10 Favorite Moments of Snark in BL

This one came is as an ask from the lovely @solitaryandwandering and there are tons of options so I just picked some of mine and labeled them top 10. I reserve the right to change my mind if a remember better.

Quite a few of these came from truly terrible BLs, I wonder if that has to do with me remembering them. Like they stood out as moments of delightful charm in a sea of sewage?

1. Just talk!

Ae getting annoyed with TinCan in A Chance At Love.

Of course it’s MAME first, but the idea of her using one of her most popular characters (whom she fucked over) to criticize miscommunication as a narrative driver (which is her fucking calling card) was just the ironic poop version of a chef’s kiss. (Sorry, I don’t know how else to put it.)

2. Saucing out of jealousy

Let’s just get MAME out of the way, shall we? Type (in TharnType) is an absolute banger at the pithy quip in a very agro way and I love a lot of his lines. I mean calling your lover “crybaby” when you finally tell him you love him? Epic snark. Also the “you can finally stop complaining about us” to Techno is so good.

But my personal favorite, hands sown, is the throwing a sauce bottle. Talk about product placement. (Although said senior’s snarky, “It’s fun to see a big baby agitated” about Type, was also pretty darn great.)

3. I’m so gay

In Rainbow Prince, the fact that Art’s focused pursuit is patently obvious and his subordinates are still careful about it was just really funny to me. It reminded me of my youth when friends got surprised when I came out. Don’t get me wrong, my coming out was perfectly serviceable at the time, but also the ones who were surprised I was like...

4. Ate the phonebook

Bright in SOTUS (played by Off) is a wonderfully snarky character. I love the way he is self deprecating about being a bad student, even in front of his juniors, and the time he leads them in prayer? So funny.

But my favorite is his one shot “Did he eat the national register” when Kong is showing off his memory for names in one of the hazing sequences.

Like serious moment of scripted brilliance.

Ah me, back in the days when most Thai BLs had really good scripts....

5. Goodnight, you fucker

Kao’s fandi-way in the Kiss series.

This is a linguistic one. It’s just I already had grocked the notion of fandi na as being a cute thing couples use with each other (kind of like “sweet dreams, please?”) to see Kao make this super rude when Pete is begging him for it, is so much THEM, their dynamic, it’s particularly snarky and on character.

Also, you know me, i had to pick a linguistic one.

6. Rome getting his own back

Rome in Puppy Honey is such a sweet soft character but also so much owning his own identity, and so steady about it. It was just really fun to see him get one up on Pick.

Even if they both know it’s actually a compliment.

Also should out to Porsche’s moment of quip, “I enjoy this scene a little too much” when he catches his bestie rolling around in paint with cute boy.

7. Invitation?

Tian actually has quite a few moments of snark in Tale of a Thousand Stars. (”You know how to sweet talk now?’). But honestly this is a phrase I use constantly IRL so I was just happy to see it show up in a Thai BL.

8. Just alpha bitch bitching it up

Look is this level of confrontation actually considered snark? I don’t know but Miriam’s defense of Chon in Tonhon Chonlatee is epic. Top level. It’s a real pleasure to watch a female bestie take out an evil femme fatale machine-gun style.

Yes there are others, the bffs (best female friends) in Together With Me and Dark Blue Kiss spring to mind.

9. Calling out the industry moments

There are quite a few of these, and a BL that is already bad and full of tropes has to be careful because they are reviewing themselves badly. And yet they do it anyway. This example comes from one of this year’s worst, My Secret Love:

Our Days has

“Can I love you, my tsundere”

“This year so many Y series came out”

“I think the script writers are at fault”

“Your acting skills suck”

all of which come off as more rich and inappropriate than snark in such a terrible show.

It’s not always bad show tho.

Cherry Blossoms After Winter scene card calling out the “only one bed” trope.

And in on of the Taiwanese BLs there is a moment where a side character tells on of the leads that “tsundere is so out of fashion” but I can’t remember which show.

10. Seme subscription service

Best of the best (IMHO) comes from Korea, who generally specializes in earnest, not snark. But...

Semantic Error is one of my favorite BL’s because the two leads are nearly entirely comprised of snark. SangWoo’s “if my heart wasn’t beating I’d be dead” was perfection, since it also takes a common trope to account.

And when JaeYoung is grouchy and says "No lettuce, eat perilla leaves instead” I bark laughed. Also the “oops my hand slipped” after he shot that dart at the drunk asshole in the pub. Both of these also involve physical comedy moments, so they aren’t strictly just snark they're visual gags but still? *kiss kiss kiss*

But I had to pick seme subscription service as my favorite moment of snark from this series. Because it is both of them, snipping back and forth.

And that’s it. That’s my top 10.

Other good ones?

KinnPorsche Pete has a few the time at the table with the minor family and the time in chains when he’s reading a book.

Most of Team’s responses to Win in Until We Meet Again. from “You’re so picky” to “Don’t even think about it.”

Half of what Pond says in Love By Chance.

All of what Pure says in My Gear and Your Gown.

I don’t love Theory of Love but Third’s internal dialogue (when he’s not whining and pining) and his occasionally take downs are pretty darn great.

Adachi’s internal reactions to Kurosawa’s thoughts in Cherry Magic, especially after they are dating. “Everything is so mushy.”

Akoi’s internal dialogue and self criticism snark in My Love Mix Up.

TangYi’s “too soft” in H3: Trapped.

Noh’s “Fine, yes” at the end of Love Sick. Not a snarky character in general, just a wise and sweet one, but at the end, yes, snark.

NamGoong in Light On Me, the sweetest side character of snark.

Pretty much all of Mob’s thoughts and dialogue in Absolute BL.

Idk if u goona see this or not but i saw some people say that since bad buddy world doesn't consist of homophobia it does no justice to queer reality also that it seemed like fanservice for women since the novel is written by straight women (as if bad buddy has any similarity with the novel), i hate when people don't watch a show and tey to bash it, i am so upset rn

coming to what you said, i personally haven't heard this "criticism" going around, probably because my college just opened its campus physically and i am always tired, nonetheless i do have thoughts (because when do i not)

first of all, I'd like to point out that i have very limited knowledge of yaoi and its history, but it does seem that yaoi, and BL by extension, has a problematic history. it originated as fiction created by straight women, for straight women, which reinforces patriarchal and cishetallonormative stereotypes, and has one dimensional female characters, if any.

that being said it does provide an escape from the constant trauma-p*rn queer people have been fed in the name of representation, and shows a utopian world free of homophobia where cis gay/m-spec men can live & love freely.

and just like most things, the BL genre too is evolving. we're getting more and more nuanced stories about queer people on screen, which are not only representative of actual queer struggles in a sensitised manner but also provides an escape. it's a weird balance honestly.

there have been BLs that tackle homophobia, and shows that outright ignore the presence of queerphobia, almost being ignorant about it.

but bad buddy is so deeply queer-coded, its hard to miss. also the entire the hotpot scene with inkpa & patpran, and pa coming out to pat, GAY.

the show was absolutely refreshing, i cannot talk about it enough how it was very much representative of queerness without actually having to shout it out loud for the sake of tokenism. (also read this post by @goldenmorningglory).

like you said, the novel is completely different from the show, and adding to it the fact that A LITERAL GAY MAN directed the show and was at the center of it, and talked to the authors of the novel about the problematic elements of it and made concious choices to not include them in the show should be enough of an indicator that it wasn't created for fan service.

also I'd like to point out that shaming straight women for consuming queer media is counterproductive. i remember how much hate becky albertalli received to the point that she had to out herself.

TL;DR: bad buddy is indeed queer, sexuality is fluid, bullying is bad, and what matters most in the intent.

Time for some BL/Danmei novel recs!

You guys have probably (maybe) seen my novels list here - [X] - but it’s more for my own tracking than anything else, so here’s a brief list (I’ll probably do full ones of the ones I really love in another post, probably on Minmo).

The ones elaborated on below with the asterisks are the novels I’ve actually finished reading.

*since everyone more or less knows MXTX’s works - TGCF, MDZS and SVSSS, I’ll skip those!

1. SCI 迷案集 | SCI Mystery Series by 耳雅*

Summary: Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao are childhood friends and rivals that end up working together under the newly established SCI unit as co-leads, with Bai Yutang providing the brawn as Captain and Zhan Zhao the brains as Vice Captain and the team’s resident genius psychologist. They solve cases together and slowly unravel a wider conspiracy that involves their parents’ generation and beyond. At the same time they also realize that they’re meant for each other!

Other CPs: Bai Jintang (Bai Yutang’s older brother) & the medical examiner, Gongsun Ce, Bai Chi (Bai Yutang’s younger cousin) & magician Zhao Zhen, and at least three other gay pairings, one of which is considered another main couple of sorts from Vol. 2 onwards

Status: Incomplete (Began in 2010, author is still going on strong with one chapter every one or two months, we’re halfway through Vol. 5 right now and it’s been 10 years ;-; Love that the author is going on strong!! Everyone on JJWXC are like “please author it’s okay if you go slow as long as you keep going we’re here for you” and jfc I understand the fear of this not completing, also when will Vol. 5 be completed and printed?!! I need to complete the collection)

Translations: Unfortunately, only the first volume has been translated well so far on novel updates. The one on Wattpad seems to have caught up, but I would not recommend that one.

Drama/Live-Action: Season 1 was filmed and released in 2018 under the same name with slightly changed names for the characters. Season 2 was supposed to start filming this month but... oh well. First season basically covered Vol. 1 novel from start to end.

*I love this one only because it was my very first danmei and so it’ll forever have a special place in my heart, and also because it’s still ongoing so ya know, I relive how much I love this every month

2. 成化十四年 | Cheng Hua’s Fourteenth Year (The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty) by 梦溪石*

Summary: Tang Fan, a prefectural judge, and Sui Zhou, a high ranking officer in the Embroidered Uniform Guards, meet while trying to solve a murder case. Both of them end up partnering very well together, Sui Zhou ends up inviting Tang Fan to live with him, and the rest is history. Through their days living together and solving cases + a larger conspiracy involving the royal palace, they fall in love. Adding to this mix is also Wang Zhi, a powerful, young eunuch who befriends the pair, and the three of them basically help the crown prince to overcome challenges and his enemies to become the next Emperor

Drama/Live-Action: The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty was released earlier this year, directed by Jackie Chan and starring Darren Chen and Paul Fu, but cases are a little different and there are new characters in the show that weren’t from the novel etc.

3. 杀破狼 | Shapolang by Priest*

Summary: Set in a steampunk universe where flying boats named ‘kites’ and flying armour exist. Young teenager Chang Geng lives with his mother and stepfather - the former abuses him and the latter neglects him, and the only person that he cares about (and cares about him) is Shen Shiliu, his (very young) godfather. He realizes his identity as a royal prince when the Man tribe invades his city and Shen Shiliu, whose real name is Gu Yun, turns out to be an army general whose duty was to protect Chang Geng in secret (among other things).

Chang Geng has been critically poisoned by his mother (who’s not actually his birth mother, if I recall she’s an aunt) which leads to him getting terrible dreams frequently with the end result of him being driven into insanity, while Gu Yun is half blind, half deaf due to poisoning + injury when he was much younger, and he can only regain his hearing and sight fully when he takes a medicine that is slowly losing its effectiveness with every dosage he has.

The both of them navigate learning about each other again, falling in love a few years later when Chang Geng is all grown up and also unravel conspiracies and fight bad guys (both external threats and internal as in the current Emperor and other parties) XD

*Note: The age old debate is that Gu Yun ‘preyed’ on and also ‘groomed’ Chang Geng, but I disagree and stand by the fact that Gu Yun was 90% of the time not around while Chang Geng grew from a teenager to a young adult as he was fighting wars elsewhere, while Chang Geng refused to stay at the Gu manor and insisted on running around, travelling on his own and seeing the world for a few years before they met again. And it was Chang Geng who’d always loved Gu Yun and devoted himself to caring about him, making advances on him etc. when he became an adult

*This is up there in the hall of fame for danmei novels for more than just the amazing content and writing - It’s also famous for being one of the most complex novels ever. I don’t know how the translations team did it because DAMN it was complex and I read all my novels in Chinese without much issues but I was honestly STRUGGLING WITH this one and I went through some existential crisis while reading because I was like ‘did I ever learn Chinese, am I even Chinese’ XD

4. 默读 | Silent Reading by Priest*

Summary: Luo Wenzhou, a police captain, and his team including best friend and partner Tao Ran, face a few challenging cases that end up being small parts of a larger conspiracy, and end up having to consult with Fei Du, a flamboyant, charming and flirty, young and rich CEO, who Luo Wenzhou describes as someone who is an expert at ‘crimes’. Not deduction, not solving crimes, but someone who is familiar with how the murderer or culprits would commit crimes. Both Luo Wenzhou and Tao Ran know Fei Du well, because they first met when Fei Du was in high school, when he called the police because his mother had hanged herself in the house, and since then Tao Ran and Luo Wenzhou look out for him, spending holidays with him, giving him presents here and there. Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du overcome their misunderstandings of each other and fall in love while solving all the cases and the larger conspiracy behind it.

Other CPs: Tao Ran and someone he knew first from his school days or was a neighbour when he was younger, I can’t remember, but they meet again at a blind date and end up living in the same building on different floors XD

5. 犯罪心理 | Criminal Psychology by 长洱*

Summary: Police captain Xing Conglian drags psychologist Lin Chen out of seclusion/hiding to solve a case that is indirectly tied to him. Lin Chen was involved in a case a few years ago that led to four deaths - these four victims were the sons/daughters of four of the five huge old-money (super rich) families in the country and these family members sought to make Lin Chen’s life very difficult for him afterwards by making him lose all the jobs he can find, by surveilling his every move and ensuring that he’s not happy etc. Because of that, he backed out of the police force as well and quietly lived as a school dorm administrator, which is where Xing Conglian finds him a few years later. Lin Chen fakes his death after the first case (not deliberately but kind of a by-the-way thing), but as fate would have it, he ends up meeting Xing Conglian on another case, and he decides that he’ll move in with him and also involve himself again, consequences be damned, and they fall in love!

6. 死亡万花筒 | Kaleidoscope of Death by 西子绪* (MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE)

Summary: Supernatural setting where people who are about to die get a second chance to live. These individuals are either in the midst of a dangerous situation (for e.g. a shootout or a deadly mugging incident) or are about to get into accidents (for e.g. an entire bus going off a bridge or a chandelier dropping from above and crushing the person underneath) or are ill (recently diagnosed with cancer or are terminally ill with a condition for e.g.) - The list is endless, and in the situation between life and death, 12 doors will appear before them.

It is said that once these individuals finish all 12 doors, they will truly get a second chance at life and survive whatever cause of death they were imminently facing.

Each door represents a creepy, supernatural mystery, and Lin Qiushi finds himself in a strange place after opening a door when he was trying to enter his apartment one day. He meets Ruan Baijie, a beautiful, tall woman who he happens to meet, and they realize that in this strange world, he and other individuals who came through the door have to complete a given task, find a key and an exit door, and make it out alive. The others in the team (some of which have already gone through several doors) explain to Lin Qiushi, who is a first-timer, what the doors are about.

The catch is, if they die inside the door, in the real world, they’ll die immediately, by accident, throwing themselves off a building, or just throwing up blood until they die (just to name a few)

On the first night, however, three people are slaughtered and eaten by a long-haired ghost/creature. The good news is, Ruan Baijie isn’t all that she seems to be (for one, she’s not exactly a woman) and she takes a liking to Lin Qiushi immediately.

7. 当年万里觅封侯 | Those Years in Quest of Honor Mine by 漫漫何其多

Summary: Yu She and Gu Wan were close friends for a short period of time when they were younger, but unfortunately their identities and positions meant that they were opponents. Yu She’s family was for the Second Prince and Gu Wan was taken in by the Sixth Prince’s family, but in the end it was the Second Prince who ended up getting to the throne, while the Sixth Prince was accused of treason and died somewhere far away at war after being captured. Gu Wan’s only wish was to keep the Fifth Prince’s children - Xuan Rui and a pair of twins, Xuan Yu and Xuan Congxin safe, and so he moves them to another province and asks the Emperor (the Second Prince) to demote Xuan Rui’s status to prove that they are no threat to the Emperor, if only to stay alive for another day.

However, their days of hardship have only just begun, and Gu Wan decides to namedrop Yu She, whose family is so powerful now, and claims that Yu She loves him and that he was wooing Gu Wan back in the days they knew each other so that officials and others would treat the children under his care better. A few years pass and Yu She doesn’t expose Gu Wan. Gu Wan thinks they can go on like this forever, until the Emperor asks Xuan Rui and the twins to head back to the palace for a visit.

Gu Wan meets Yu She again, but the boy he knew, who was gentle, a stickler for rules and a proper, well-mannered person, has changed almost completely. Cue palace conspiracies again, brothers fighting for the throne, scheming consorts etc. XD

- A really good group of translators picked this up initially on Twitter, but then assholes were complaining that they were being too slow and insisting that machine translation (MTL) did an equally good and faster job, so the OG dropped it, and then another nice team picked it up, but MTL team is still being an asshole XD I’ve heard really good things about this one, it’s apparently quite complex as well, I’d liken it to Shapolang level? But it might be even more complex (with a lot of politics and stuff), so much so that apparently the printed novel comes with a relationship/character chart so readers are at any point in time clear on the characters which is like amazing XD

Getting to know Spoon!

Before her debut as an illustrator for the romance fantasy series WMMAP, she was active in the doujin world for works such as Hakyuu/Kuroko no Basket.

She was in charge of the cover illustration of the novel ‘I became a princess one day’, and is serializing a webtoon that is an adaptation of the novel.

3) Controversy

• The setting that the author Spoon changed in the webtoon [1] overlaps with the 3-stage regression setting of 'Doctor Elise' [2], which became controversial. What both characters have in common is that they were orphans when they lived in Korea. The difference is that Elise remembers everything before reincarnating from the beginning, while Athanasia doesn't remember what happened before her reincarnation, and she just knows that she is was reincarnated in a novel.

3.1) Doujinshi that has been serialized in the past

In addition, there is another controversy, as in the past, the author drew the BL doujin work in the above photo with the main subject of hypnosis rape.

Although there are points that certainly have to be ethically criticized in this work, it is common among doujin writers to draw this kind of doujinshis. Many artists have a past history of doujinshi activities, but no one makes an issue out of it, and of course, it is not a problem. However, no matter what, there are strong opinions on the fact that such a depiction of rape is a problem.

While most critics of Spoon's deeds focus on rape, not on the R18, Spoon's fans argue that it must be allowed in the name of R18.

However, that does not mean that we should not have a prejudice that 'writers of stories with hypnotic rape as the main subject should not draw webtoons for all readers', and while refusing to mention the author's past works, people either repudiate comments that show malicious intent on the work, or write malicious content towards the author. You must not post malicious comments that exceed to personal attacks. [4]

3.2) The controversy of the illustration

In order to give [the illustration] the feeling of a romance fantasy, I referred to the romance fantasy illustrator, Ciel-nim. (시엘)

I made a mistake while studying my drawing style. I will reflect and be careful when studying in the future.

I have no intention of drawing like this a second time, it was just for reference... Because it doesn’t suit [me]. ㅠㅠ (I think that this style of art shines the most in Ciel's illustrations.)

I usually mention it when I reference to something, but I've been very busy lately, so I forgot to write it. I'm sorry. Excuse me. People who saw it and to Ciel as well. *Since this is a reference picture, I only posted it on my blog for the record and did not post it on Twitter.

The author intended to this picture as the cover [of the novel], but at first, I didn't know that it was meant to be a cover, but I contacted the author in order to take down the picture, as it would cause trouble.

Controversy arose and author Spoon provided this explanation.

Ok here’s why I personally thought BL S4 was a hot mess (but still better than anything TF has recently released)

SPOILERS

Overall the storyline was all over the place. They brought in new characters that were obviously supposed to facilitate with the main actors’ storyline but I felt like it was empty and took away from it instead? There was too much focus on the painkiller, he had a plot that just didn’t make sense (I think it’s because they were setting him up for his own show but he had like 2 whole eps dedicated to him that just didn’t fit). Same old with Tobias, Lala, Lady eve etc. Villains doing the same thing season after season is just boring. It’s was clear that Crisis changed things in their lives but it was never fully explained so there were just these huge plot holes that made no sense. All the characters had no development, it actually felt like they were reverting. The “Jen changing identity” plot was surprising the saving grace of the season.

Jeff: Completely unhinged in the first few episodes. Attacking police unprovoked, getting into fights, refusing to be BL when there was war going on in freeland. It was so bad, it even had me wondering what the hell happened to those ‘Injustice Protocols’?? They named dropped the flash in an ep so Barry was present in his life but did nothing? Do those protocols only apply to when Barry is a danger to others?? Anyway, he was basically a Joe level deadbeat at some point. And everything we established about his character in S1 and his development was basically destroyed. His relationship with Lynn and the girls was non-existent. Armageddon Jeff did him a favour.

Jen/Anissa: No development at all. Jen stayed the troublemaking hothead “little girl” that doesn’t listen, but worse. I could never figure out what they were doing with her character?? Like I understand she’s supposed to be a teen but the attitude she has all the time was exhausting to watch. Anissa stayed the same. Like I couldn’t even tell you what her character arc has been throughout the show? Consistently angry? And her powers never grew which bothered me. They could’ve done a lot more with her. Career driven but still makes time for everyone, supportive, loved by the people, wants to protect others, proud to be black and a lesbian etc. She could’ve stolen the show if they let her.

Lynn: Lynn… Oh don’t even get me started on her 😭. It’s like they sat down and put together all the ways they could make her unlikeable. Do you know how Mirror Iris was towards Barry? She was like that but 1000x worse. Which annoyed me the most because it just fit into so many stereotypes about black women. She somehow managed to blame Jeff for literally everything. Tobias is trying to ruin their life? Jeffs fault. The girls got injured on a mission that he told them not to go on? Jeff’s fault? It rained today? Jeff’s fault. The milk is expired? Jeff’s fault. And she was completely unsympathetic to the fact that he was still grieving (she actually told him to get over it). I think the biggest mistake they made with the show was trying to force a relationship between them when there didn’t need to be one. They were separated for a reason, she could’ve still been a part of the show and family without the romance needing to be rekindled. The flash has many faults, but I will always be thankful that they wrote Iris as a matriarch that is proud of and supports her superhero husband and kids. Lynn on the other hand… And this isn’t just S4, she was like this throughout the duration of the show. But she was also let down as a character because her family were very unsupportive of her addiction and brushed off her ideas a lot because she wasn’t “like them”.

I could honestly go into more detail, but spoilers and also I feel like I’m being too critical about the show. It has its faults, but it’s not too bad. Maybe it was cancelled before it could reach it’s full potential 🤷🏽‍♀️

That person in the ask who talked about how the LO fandom can't take criticism is just right! I'm in a LO fans group on facebook and i once made a post in the group talking about myth!Thetis and how i didn't really like RS take on her in LO, moslty because i feel like Lamia could have been a better choice for "antagonist" (even tough any of Zeuse's victims should be villanized) than a goddess that never sleep with Zeus in the myths. And most poeple literally comented "But Rachel said that she took some creative liberties!" "But Thetis is a actually a good villain" "Rachel just wanted a friend for Minthe" i literally had to put like 20 times "i know she took liberties, i put it in my post, i just wanted people to know more about the real Thetis". It was so annoying, is like they don't even read, the group is acutally nice for most part but that was a very bitter experience for me.

I find really disgusting how some LO fans said "is so good that we finally have a version were Hades is not the villain and is acutally nice!" and talk about how Hades is such a good god in the myths (compared to Zeus and the other olympians he honestly is) but at the same they are totally fine with RS ripping Thetis character apart and macking her a homewrecker b*tch when she is one of the sweetest deities in mythology, she was even loved by Hera herself! And i find the case of Thetis even worse than Hades because Hades is a munch more pupular god and some adaptations of him as a villain are actually funny and likeable (like Hadestown and Hades from Hercules/Disney) they may not be acurate but they make him in most cases a good villain, but Thetis? If you ask someone who is Thetis at best they will tell you "oh! Achilles mom?" This version of Thetis may be the first one that most people will meet and the first that will come in mind when people think of Thetis (also the Thetis from "the song of Achilles", that i haven't read yet but i heard Thetis isn't very likeable in that one) is really sad how RS make such a a sweet and kind goddess a literal witch and only so Minthe could have a toxic friend. This grey nymph is not Thetis, she is an OC that shares her name.

Same thing with Apollo, he is far from a saint in the myths but he is not the psycho that we see in LO, he isn't even a charismatic or interesting as a villain, the Apollo from Saint Seiya was also a villain but at least he was elegant and intimidating, he was far better than LO! Apollo and he had munch less screen time than LO! Apollo. Apollo wanting to overtrown Zeus in LO also doesn't make sense, yes he make a revolution in the myths but it wasn't only him: Hera, Poseidon and Athena also wanted Zeus gone, in some versions he didn't even helped them.

TW: sexual assault, cheating, murder and incest (and spoilers)

There is a very explicit BL manhawa (+18) named "ENNEAD" by the autor Mojito, is a retelling of the myth of the fight of Horus and Seth for the throne of egypt, it also touches the theme of r*ape (male r*ape), cheating and murder but it does it in a better way than in LO in my opinion. Seth actually is punished from killing humans, he's trauma (even if it's also used as a plot point) is better portrayed and all the gods in ennead have flaws, even the ones that are good. The demonization of Osiris and he's rol as a villain is well done and since he is a popular deity most people know how the real Osiris is. Even the art, the story, th setting and the creative liberties (like Ra being a woman) are good! The only flaw that i can't find is that the SA scenes are ..... too explicit, so i can't recomend if you're a SA survivor or a sensitive person. I feel like compared it to LO is a bit unfair since LO happends in a modern setting but Ennead is still way better in my opinion.
