Shadow of Night Read Along Ch21
‘No offense taken, Goody Alsop. But if you take this matter to your elders, Diana’s identity will be known across London.’ Matthew stood. ‘I can’t allow that.’
‘Every witch in the city has already heard about your wife. News travels quickly here, no small thanks to your friend Christopher Marlowe,’ Goody Alsop said, craning her neck to meet his eyes. ‘Sit down, Master Roydon. My old bones no longer bend that way.’
To my surprise, Matthew sat.
Matthew is throwing his cranky weight around with the subtelty of a bulldozer but Goody Alsop is having none of it. She is the boss. You show him Goody.

Sometimes I think about how proud Morse would be that:
a) Roger Allam has some opera training and is still a massive opera and classical fanboy
b) Kevin Whately's daughter Kitty is a professional opera/classical singer (and a v good one!)
I think he'd like both Shaun Evans and John Thaw too (and would be psyched that Thaw's second marriage was to a Quaker!), though he might be freaked out by how many serial killers Evans has played. But Allam and Whately, especially the latter? Oh that would make his *year*. :-)

Carlos Santana has a career that moves within a variety of idioms, though he remains a rock musician at heart. Sure, he appears on many jazz fusion records, yet he always puts some of his rock stylings in these proceedings. That makes his collaboration with Herbie Hancock on Monster weird, since you can't really locate much of the rock idiom there. To be honest, you can't find jazz there either. Actually, I am quite happy to hear Herbie Hancock did some LPs, where he discarded his genre and which probably pissed off most of his audience. Nonetheless, there's something admirable about someone like him doing something like this, more musicians should do this more often. And the fact that he convinced Santana for this? Even better.

So this is really one of the most important reasons for my enormous crush on Roger Allam:-
He’s a big, imposing-looking man with (when he uses it that way) a big, imposing-sounding voice. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard him play a role without bringing an astonishing amount of vulnerability to it, and as many layers as the character will take (including far more than many other even really good actors would find).
He has made me care about Duke Vincentio in Measure for Measure, Prospero in The Tempest, and Falstaff in the Henry IVs, all of whom (despite - arguably - not being actual villains) I usually cordially dislike. And he does so without his acting excusing any of their actions: his Duke still fucks up massively towards Isabella and does some seriously dodgy things; his Prospero is still extremely problematic in his behaviour towards, well, everybody frankly; his Falstaff is still cruel and venal. But my Gods, he shows how much pain they’re each in, how frightened each of them is. His Duke has severe depression and is flailing about much of the time and you get the impression he will do his best after the end to make it up to Isabella, that he gets that he’s messed up; his Prospero is terrified of losing both Miranda and Ariel and is desperately traumatised by all he’s gone through; his Falstaff plays a mighty good game and fools most people but underneath he’s a scared old man who knows his own failings with a horrible precision and whose love for Hal is like putting his heart in the mouth of a lion(’s whelp).
He made me care about Rogozhin in The Idiot so much (again, without in any way detracting from how horrifying the man is) that he was part of what I was crying about when I got to the end of that radio adaptation.
I already cared about Bosola in The Duchess of Malfi (again, despite everything he does - but that’s what Webster asks of us and he writes it beautifully) and then... bloody hell. Absolutely broke my heart.
Do I even need to bring up his Javert? ;-)
And as for when he plays characters who are broken and who don’t do awful things (Valjean in the radio Les Miserables) especially... Holy Fucking Shit.
So no wonder that I have that terrible need to hug both Douglas Richardson and Fred Thursday (and goodness me but when Fred messes up he really messes up, and Douglas is... Douglas). Not to mention Antoine Verlaque, though there I’m mostly just awfully glad he has Marine to hug him. :D
What I always want from actors is, well, those layers. That depth. That compassion. That honesty. That nuance. That thoughtfulness. Sheila Hancock once described Roger as a vulnerable actor and I’m very vindicated by this; he just doesn’t look like a vulnerable actor but then that’s a huge part of what makes those performances so devastating.
And then when you bring in the incredible vocal abilities (including his ability to sound like he’s talking quietly while filling a large theatre unmiced <3), and the extreme versatility... yeah. No wonder I’m a fanboy. :D
Oh lord, is he going to make me care about Azazel in The Sandman series 2?! I mean if anyone could make me do so... [fear]

'...Sophie Hopkins (played April MacLean in Class, 2016)
The Doctor Who moment that has always stuck with me is the regeneration of the Tenth Doctor – David Tennant’s simple yet heartbreaking words, “I don’t want to go”. Chills!
Juno Dawson (writer of the Doctor Who: Redacted audio series, 2022 onwards)
When Tegan Jovanka leaves the Doctor, she tells him she can no longer witness the bodies piling up around them. “It’s stopped being fun, Doctor!”, she wails. I often apply that rule to my life, too. If it stops being fun, get out. Some 20 years later, Martha Jones chooses herself over a life of pining after the Doctor. She explains about her university friend’s unrequited love for their flatmate. Martha won’t repeat her pattern, and she gets out. It’s one of the most explicitly feminist moments in the show.”
Susie Liggat (producer, 2007-2008)
We were filming the last scene of Planet of the Ood in Trefil Quarry, it was boiling hot but we covered it in biodegradable paper snow. The Ood stand in a circle and sing their song of thanks to the Doctor and Donna. It’s such a vision of trust and openness, which for me represented the power of being vulnerable, the brilliance of “the Other”, the importance of not underestimating or taking advantage of people or creatures who work in different ways. Visually it was very simple and exposed, just the guys playing the creatures, Catherine Tate and David Tennant. A rare moment of stillness...'

teresapalmer Oh the threads of the universe 💫💫 how I miss Diana Bishop but she does show herself to me in all sorts of ways. I’ve always felt a little witchy even before landing in her shoes but since spending time with her things have amplified immensely. I distinctly remember walking in to the audition opposite Matthew GoodE to play Diana in @/adiscoveryofwitchestv back in 2017, I went to the bathroom to steal a moment with myself and to calm my heart that was beating through my chest. I looked at myself in the mirror and called upon my light source for guidance, in particular asking Diana Bishop to be with me, she showed up for me then and has showed up for me countless times since. I believe in magic, the mysterious gifts of the universe, calling our greatest desires in whilst always leading with gratitude. Some call it manifesting, some may say it’s spell casting, others call it miracles, prayer etc. one thing I know is that it is helps me take inspired action towards goals and intentions I set and it feels wonderful once these things come to fruition. The more I learn about the law of attraction the more it fills me up with a great comfort that there’s something bigger at play here. ⁣
One of my go-to experts in the field Stephanie Keith from @/lawofattractiontribe podcast so graciously spent an hour with @swrightolsen and I for @/themotherdazepodcast and I left the interview feeling so inspired, uplifted and validated in many ways. I love sharing this passion of mine with other people and there’s no one I prefer talking to about this subject than Stephanie Keith. Let her hold your hand as she walks us through a beginners guide to manifesting your Dream Life (her examples are awe-inspiring!!) OUT NOW. Link in bio! ⁣ ⁣

So chi sei e ti vorrei con me.
BATTERIA O MICROFONO?
Diventare come Diana Ross?
Solo nei brani Life Can Be So Nice e Venus de Milo, però.
DOPO SIGN O THE TIME

John Thaw (3 January 1942 – 21 February 2002) Physique: Average Build Height: 5' 7½" (1.71 m)
John Edward Thaw, CBE was an English actor who appeared in a range of television, stage, and cinema roles. He starred in the television series Inspector Morse as title character Detective Chief Inspector Endeavour Morse, Redcap as Sergeant John Mann, The Sweeney as Detective Inspector Jack Regan, Home to Roost as Henry Willows, and Kavanagh QC as title character James Kavanagh. Thaw died at the age of 60 in 2002 of oesophageal cancer.
It was Thaw's Inspector Morse that first introduced me to British television in the 90s and with his a great voice and silver hair. He had me wanting to move to Oxfordshire shack up with him. What? I SO would have. Apparently Thaw was a quiet, private man and his marriage to actress Sheila Hancock was generally regarded as one of the strongest in showbusiness. Damn, now I feel bad about wanting to fuck him. What? I'm not a homewrecker. Just an occasional whore.
