WELCOME
TO THE FIRST ROUND OF THE COPAGANDA CLOBBERFEST!
Tumblr media
“You know that trope? That one trope *Everyone* hates? The trope in which a well meaning antagonist to our heroes, one looking out for the good of a certain community, suddenly does something horrible and drastic to make not only them, but the ideology they stand for the most villainous of all?”
NOW IS THE TIME TO BATTLE THEM OUT! Like Ken dolls, fighting for survival! Like your Polly pockets discarded in the closet, we’ll see which of these bitches jumped that slippery slope harder! Whose character did numbers on y’all, and blew up a bunch of grandmas and babies and hospitals with it!
ROUND ONE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SQUEALER from SHIN SEKAI YORI vs THE WHITE FANG from RWBY
Squealer propaganda (TW for disturbing themes, as well as spoilers for the anime)
“he is a human man who has descended from a long line of humans who were genetically engineered, tortured, studied like literal rodents, selectively bred, and worse by a population of other humans with psychic powers. to show that he is in the wrong, he slaughters the elderly, infirm, children, murders two 14 year olds in particular and uses their child as a living weapon, and lobotomizes his mother in an effort to be recognized as human and treated better than literal garbage.”
White Fang propaganda (TW for Racism, Branding, Slavery, Antisemitism):
“As a Jewish person, I stopped watching RWBY around the beginning of s5 when Adam (the main White Fang antagonist) said that the goal of the White Fang was to replace humans in society. It came SO shortly after those riots where people where chanting "Jews will not replace us" and it made me so sick to my stomach to watch a conspiracy theory like that actually play out on screen that I hard stopped watching a show I'd been highkey obsessed with for years.”
“The evilest moment the writers wrote for their literal “minorities are secretly just wanting power over the whites” scapegoat character involves said character revealing he was not only enslaved but also was branded with a cattle prod over his eye.”
“The White Fang is the only organization fighting for the rights of the Faunus, the in-universe minority group meant to be an allegory for poc, and they’re portrayed as ruthless terrorists who are conveniently less white than the privileged minorities who “redeem” them. A majority of the actual poc who are also Faunus have “allusions” to the Jungle Book, and if you know the Jungle Book’s author and the certain other thing he wrote, you’d Barf at how racist that really is. The white comfort is strong in this Texan show. Also, said terrorists in this show are based off the real-world Black Panther Party, which just makes this whole thing feel like a special on Fox News!”
“The first indigenous-coded character and she’s a terrorist. Like what real life native Americans are to this day dubbed as for simply wanting their rights.”
Always feel free to rb with more propaganda :)

Best Underrated Anime Group B Round 2: #B1 vs #B2
#B1: Coming-of-age story set in a “utopia”
#B2: High school performers
Titles, propagandas, trailers, and poll under the cut!
Tumblr media
#B1: From the New World (Shinsekai Yori)
youtube
Summary:
In the town of Kamisu 66, 12-year-old Saki Watanabe has just awakened to her psychic powers and is relieved to rejoin her friends—the mischievous Satoru Asahina, the shy Mamoru Itou, the cheerful Maria Akizuki, and Shun Aonuma, a mysterious boy whom Saki admires—at Sage Academy, a special school for psychics. However, unease looms as Saki begins to question the fate of those unable to awaken to their powers, and the children begin to get involved with secretive matters such as the rumored Tainted Cats said to abduct children. Shinsekai yori tells the unique coming-of-age story of Saki and her friends as they journey to grow into their roles in the supposed utopia. Accepting these roles, however, might not come easy when faced with the dark and shocking truths of society, and the impending havoc born from the new world.
Propaganda:
Shinsekai Yori is not the flashiest show, or the fastest pace, but the slow and steady build of the horror and mystery will keep you entranced from beginning to end.
At its heart, this show is a coming-of-age story. We follow the protagonist from her childhood to adulthood, with all the messiness in between. From puberty and discovering sexuality, to learning the darker truths of society and having to live with unwanted knowledge, we see through Saki’s eyes. The setting of this world is a post apocalyptic future, and what society has been rebuilt as is one of the main mysteries we discovered.
This show is very complex and dark and sad, but it’s absolutely beautiful. The visuals, backgrounds, character expressions, music all come together to create something truly unique. The only show I know to compare it to might be Psycho-Pass, for it’s similarly deep deconstruction of society. However, whereas Psycho Pass is one of the most praised anime of all time, Shinsekai Yori is barely known. This is a shame, because it truly has something special to say that everyone can relate to. How hard growing up can be, fighting against your own hormones, traditions, adults, family, friends, your moral code.
This is not a happy story; it’s a bittersweet, cautionary tale.
Trigger Warnings: Animal Cruelty or Death, Graphic Depictions of Cruelty/Violence/Gore, Suicide

#B2: Kageki Shoujo!!
youtube
Summary:
After being forced to graduate from JPX48 following a controversial incident with a male fan, Ai Narata swears to never interact with another man ever again. Using her talents and strong desire to get away from men, Ai auditions for the exclusive all-female Kouka School of Musical and Theatrical Arts. The school is renowned for producing the best actresses that go on to perform in the famous all-female Kouka Theatre Troupe. Coming from the idol industry, Ai is the perfect candidate for the school's hundredth generation class, but her aloof demeanor alienates her from her classmates. The eccentric Sarasa Watanabe is the only person who wishes to become Ai's friend. She enters Kouka with the goal of becoming a top "otokoyaku" performer—an actress that plays traditionally male roles. After seeing a Kouka performance of The Rose of Versailles when she was younger, Sarasa dreams of performing as Lady Oscar one day. Unfortunately, Sarasa's inability to read a room causes friction between her and her classmates, including Ai, who reluctantly becomes her roommate and partner in many of their classes. Succeeding at Kouka will involve more than just raw talent for these young girls as jealousy, deceit, and the harsh realities of show business put their mental fortitude to the test. Will Sarasa and Ai be able to rise to the top and stand on the silver bridge?
Propaganda:
If theatre setting/schools is your thing, you’re probably going to love this series! We follow our protagonists and their schoolmates following their dreams to become actresses for the prestigious Kouka Revue. Not an easy road as they will have to face and overcome many challenges, the hardest ones coming from themselves. Indeed, the story is not afraid to address sensitive topics and their resulting traumas (see TW list) always rightfully handed. These episodes may be a bit hard to see if you’re sensitive to these topics, but the show never leaves you in discomfort: everything is properly addressed, and characters are cared for realistically.
The characters are all very well-written, portraying individuals with way more depth than they may appear at first glance. We follow their growth—or its start—during the series. Sarasa is a walking sunbeam, and her blooming friendship with the withdrawn Ai is a delight to watch. We learn to know—and love—all their classmates as well, as episodes switch focus to one or the other.
The OST is really good, with a catchy opening, and no less than five different versions of the ending song, a fabulous duet voiced by the cast! The animation features really pretty art with iconic details like the stars in Sarasa’s eyes. The series is a homage to Takarazuka and scatter references to famous real-life Revues and older famous shôujo manga series like “Versailles no Bara” or “Glass no Kamen”. Actually, it feels like a modernized version of their essence: roses, sparkles, spotlight, drama, all while staying safe!
This anime is like candy for eyes and soul, and I really hope we'll get a season 2 to explore the girls' voices further!
Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse, Pedophilia, Self-Harm
Nothing is too graphical nor explicit, just the right amount to let the unsettling situations be clear enough to watchers, and they’re always addressed correctly.
Child abuse/ Pedophilia: episode 3 (+4), about Ai’s traumas
Self-harm: episode 5 focuses on a girl with an eating disorder, forcing herself to vomit (not sure if that really counts as TW?)

Oh, I forgot to mention I have finally started reading Shinsekai Yori (though I've only managed two chapters so far), and I happy to report we get that banger of a line even earlier in the book!
It's a bit long, as Saki is still starting her autobiographical warning letter to future generations, but I like the extra context it gives to that statement:
My mother was in the middle of a meeting about the classification of a newly discovered collection of books when she went into labor. This was over a week before the expected due date, but since her water broke without warning, she was immediately transported to the maternity hospital near the outskirts of town. The sound of my first cry was heard not ten minutes after. Unfortunately, my umbilical cord was wrapped around my neck. My face was purple and I was unable to cry properly. The birthing assistant, who was new at the job, nearly collapsed in panic at this. Luckily, the cord was easily cut and I finally breathed in the air of this world and let out a healthy cry.  Two weeks later, in the same maternity hospital, Maria Akizuki, who would later become my friend, was born. On top of being a premature breech birth, she was, like me, born with her umbilical cord around her neck. Though her condition was much more serious than mine; she was almost dead when she was delivered.  The birthing assistant, armed with the experience from my birth, apparently handled this very calmly. If there had been but a tiny slip and the cord was cut just a bit later, there’s no doubt Maria would have died.  When I first heard this story, I was elated that I had somehow indirectly saved my friend’s life. But now, every time I remember this, I’m hit with a wave of complicated thoughts. Because if she had never been born, there would never have been such a huge loss of human lives…
From the day Maria was born, they were already connected in such a way. And, if the can assign the causality of those future deaths to Maria's birth, of course she would also feel that about her own.

A new fan song I wrote (inspired by Shinsekai Yori), called “Reckoning”.
-
LYRICS:
It’s been about a thousand years
since our power first appeared
the sacred song of fire and fear
by my reckoning
We inherit a quiet place
set apart from the human race
a history we couldn’t trace
was beckoning
Generations had come and gone
and yet our little world went on
none of us knew what lay beyond
the barrier
We made imagination real
and honed it till it was sharp as steel
there was nothing to make us feel
any warier
Then we learnt how we came to be
how the ones to shape our destiny
were cruel men
Was our village truly safe from harm?
There was no cause for false alarm
Just come home again
It’s been more than a dozen years
since the first of us disappeared
thus our fate would be engineered
by my reckoning
Moulding us to be clean and pure
so our society would endure
how could we ever know for sure
what was happening?
The quiet boy with the thrilling stare
The lovely girl with the scarlet hair
The friend who needed our love and care
They’ve all gone away
And we can’t even remember why
there are absences by our side
just that a part of us has died
yet their traces stay
What happens when our precepts fail?
When the system is so brittle and frail
That it breaks in twain?
What happens when we know the truth?
When we’ve shattered the innocence of youth
Only scars remain
What will become of us?
Where can we place our trust?
As the fire devoured our town
Our illusions were broken down
The child of those who had gone to ground
was coming home
All our fireworks on display
the sparklers with which we’d play
had eventually betrayed
what we thought we’d known
A reckoning must now begin
for all that we’ve been complicit in
for casting out our own guiltless kin
we must take the blame
The cruelty that we have brought
on those we deem a lesser lot
is symptomatic of systemic rot
and it has to change
All the fruits of what we’ve sown
we just discard outside our home
we don’t care at all
We have learnt to be wilfully blind
to the pain of those not of our kind
and by this we’ll fall
For the sake of the friends we loved
We must be willing and strong enough
to find a way
To atone for the crimes of our past
and build a just society that lasts
for another day

the manga adaptation of shinsekai yori is SOOOOO bad. it’s making me genuinely violent. i thought at least it was interesting to read the expansion of a plot point or two but they expanded THOSE plot points only to absurdly COMPRESS others and its so bad
not to mention they’re like oh yes let’s have insanely skimpy outfits for the girls and underage wlw sex every volume but no let’s completely erase the boys being in love. okay.

Kiroumaru
Kiromaru (sometimes spelled: Kiroumaru,) is a character from the anime series: Shinsekai Yori (From the New World). Kiromaru Is the commander of the Giant Hornet colony. One of the inhuman creature characters that appear in the show, he shares a more of a humanoid appearance than some of the other 'monster rats' do. Instead resembling more of a wolf-like appearance and snout and a taller stature. In the novelization, he also has a few tattoos around the eyes and bridge of his nose. This specific feature was changed in both the anime and manga versions for unknown reasons, however.
Kiromaru is probably one of the more memorable and likable characters (within the manga/anime) at least, and I liked his overall character design.

ok so ive had a few hours to digest shinsekai. thoughts and spoilers ahead!
so ok. shinsekai yori is the kind of show, similar to season 1 of shield hero, where taking a watsonian perspective makes it look really, really good! if we could take the text just as it stands, its great. it's a story about, at its core, the parts of humanity nobody likes to look at. fear, oppression, playing god, the powerful going to any lengths to keep power for themselves, cruelty, desperation. taken at face value, it's a fascinating exploration of how, exactly, humanity might deal with psychic powers manifesting in a small portion of the population.
but we're not here to take a watsonian perspective. we must once again look through the lens of the doylist perspective, and unlike shield hero's obviously shitty foundation, this one's... confusing. any time someone writes about political structures, oppression and revolution, and societies very different from our own, they're going to inevitably let some of their personal beliefs colour the narrative. and i couldnt figure out, really, what the author believes in this one. but i think a good way to put it is that the author set out to create a deeply unethical world, extrapolated from problems in modern humanity, and said "we need to change these problems". but they trip over their own feet in this because theyre. not actually capable of imagining a better future for the world theyve created.
the first big problem to address is the fact that children have no human rights and are killed if they show any signs of nonconformity or potentially dangerous outbursts or if they suck at being psychic or if they arent psychic at all. this is a defense against the emergence of Fiends and Karma Demons, but Fiends are the primary issue. to prevent psychics from slaughtering each other, humanity was genetically modified to be instinctively unwilling to attack other humans, and to experience death feedback, a biological response to killing another human where the body's psychic energy shuts down vital organs and kills itself. Fiends are humans who lack these and are thus able to kill indiscriminately. humans can't fight back because theyre biologically programmed not to kill humans, so Fiends are effectively unstoppable once they snap. and so we must kill them as children before they become fiends (by breeding big cats for murder), forbid discussion of "missing" students, and modify the memory of any students who knew them. this, as all the characters except the ruling class agree, is horrible! it's cruel and inhumane and no civilised society should ever implement such a policy.
but like. what is there to be done instead? the show never offers an alternative. it doubles down and tells us the only reason the last Fiend was stopped was because of a fluke. another emergence of a Fiend would destroy humanity. and when another Fiend DOES emerge, rather than finding a way to deal with it, it's simply. not actually a Fiend. it can be dealt with, but it doesnt solve the problem at all. In fact, the one method they find to actually kill a fiend without dying themselves is destroyed and unrecoverable.
main character Saki is told she's to take over as head of the Ethics Committee, which one would think could result in meaningful change being made. but, from what i gathered in the last episode, she's simply a member of the committee, not the head. and no changes to the practice of murdering children are ever suggested or explored. maybe she DOES have thoughts on the matter, but the author does not tell us them, and i believe this is because they also do not know what to do.
the second huge issue is the oppression of the slave race, the bakenezumi. where do i even fuckin start. bakenezumi are sentient creatures that appear to have evolved from naked mole rats and worship humans as gods due to their psychic powers. their societies are similar to ants in that only the queen can give birth, they live in tunnels underground, and they steal workers and larvae from their defeated enemies after winning inter-colony wars. they are heavily regulated by humans. their colony name is tattooed on their forehead at birth and they have to submit paperwork before being allowed to go to war with each other or have battles. if they commit crimes against humans, they could face the eradication of their entire colony. humans claim this is only in "extreme cases", but our protagonist's comphet boyfriend says that questioning the deity of humans is punishable by death, so how "extreme" could it really be?
crucially, the bakenezumi are sentient. they may speak a language of primarily grunts and squeaks, but they are perfectly capable of learning the human tongue and speaking it fluidly. they can read, they can organise into military units, they can fill out paperwork, they can enter into contracts, they are for all intents and purposes humans that live in the ground and come out of a big meaty queen looking like bugs. their political structure is primitive, sure, but feudal monarchy was common during a time when we would consider humans to still have been fully sentient, so thats not really a proper argument against the bakenezumi.
any sentient race living subservient to another race is eventually going to revolt. when your entire nation could get wiped out if you accidentally said 'yknow ion think those guys are gods' within earshot of a human, what reason do you have NOT to revolt? squealer (may he rest in power), the primary antagonist of the second half of the show, recognized this, but so did kiromaru, the leader of an alliance of bakenezumi colonies that was fiercely loyal to humans. BOTH of them recognized the futility of their existence and attempted to do something about it. but the humans are completely incapable of understanding this point of view. the standard humans, yeah, but also the main characters who are generally wiser about the societal problems with human society. even saki, whose job it is to work with bakenezumi, cant figure out why theyd rebel. because humans see bakenezumi as inferior creatures. no more than beasts of burden.
but what does the show do with this? it's fuckin, hard to say, really. squealer is portrayed as a cunning, ruthless leader who takes his colony into a new age of.... democracy and union membership? he commits horrible atrocities against his own people and against humanity in an effort to eradicate humans and become the new dominant species, but like. the way his crimes are tied to his support of democratic governance, unions, individual rights, and forward thinking, contrasted by the Noble Savage kiromaru's clinging to the Old Ways of tyrannical monarchy and dying for the sake of the colony, its hard not to come to the conclusion that the position we're expected to take is 'modernity is bad and the people selling it are lying to you'. squealer's society is just as based on dying for the sake of the colony as kiromaru's, and this 'contradiction' is supposed to make him seem evil, despite the fact that like. of course the bakenezumi are going to die for the cause of freedom. humans in real life die because an army recruiter whispered the word in their ear.
and when squealer does revolt, instantly humans decide that ALL bakenezumi need to be eradicated, despite the fact that many colonies were allied AGAINST squealer. even kiromaru's years of famously loyal service arent enough to change the humans' minds. they strip him naked like a dog and chain him in prison while continuing to demand he grovel for them. saki saves his life and he works with them to try to take out the Fiend in squealer's service, but lets examine how the narrative treats kiromaru here. clearly it wants to say his treatment was unwarranted, he's just as sentient and worthy of respect as anyone else, but his ultimate fate is to be killed in a plan that HINGED on his death. that was the best we could get for him. decades of loyalty despite recognizing the futility of the bakenezumi's existence, and his reward is to be abandoned by the people he served and killed to protect his oppressors.
but surely in the aftermath of the war against humanity, saki will do something to fix the situation right? well, not in any visible way. saki works to prevent kiromaru's allied colonies' queens from being killed (no word on if the surviving members survive or not, she only promised to save the queens), but thats just maintaining the status quo. instead of driving bakenezumi to extinction, certain loyal factions are graciously permitted to remain in servitude. their continued oppression is their reward. and it's not through anything they couldve done. no act of the oppressed could possibly save them, if kiromaru's reputation couldnt save him. it was only through the grace and mercy of Human Saki that divine punishment could be avoided.
and humans dont even THINK about changing their views on this. theyre just as sure of their own superiority as they were before. squealer is given a farce of a trial. his impassioned cry of "We are humans!" is met with cruel laughter and he is sentenced to Eternal Torture, while his followers are presumably wiped out. in memory of the event, a museum is built where visitors can come and see the crude weaponry of the bakenezumi, the funny helmet he used to wear, and his quivering, tortured flesh piled in a flask. his torment is reduced to a mere curiosity. saki kills him in a fit of mercy, but how many months did he remain in that state while they built a hall around him?
and perhaps the most fascinating part of this is that like. our heros dont change their sense of superiority, either. saki's comphet boyfriend discovers that the bakenezumi were created by adding mole rat DNA to the DNA of Actual Real Humans without psychic powers until they looked inhuman enough to be killed without triggering the death feedback. saki experiences a momentary horror as she realises she's been massacring Real Humans, but she's quickly comforted by comphet boyfriend, who reassures her that she doesnt Actually see them as the same race, does she? of course not. they may have been human once, but they are not now! they are instead Subservient.
despite saki hoping that in the future the world Does Better, there's no thought given to what that might look like. she's dreaming of a better world in the most empty way possible. its the same world, but there's a sticker on it that says 'new and improved!'. and im not sure how im supposed to feel about it.

Best Underrated Anime Group B Round 1: #B8 vs #B1
#B8: Middle school idol drama
Eighth-grader Ayase Naru becomes the manager of local fashion store Prism Stone. Here, she begins learning “prism shows,” which is an idol show performed on ice skates.
She meets a girl named Rinne, who asks her if she can see rainbow music. She then goes on to enter many tournaments with her friends and uncover the mysteries of the prism world.

#B1: Coming-of-age story set in a “utopia”
Tells the unique coming-of-age story of Saki and her friends as they journey to grow into their roles in the supposed utopia. Accepting these roles, however, might not come easy when faced with the dark and shocking truths of society, and the impending havoc born from the new world.
Titles, propagandas, trailers, and poll under the cut!
Tumblr media
#B8: Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live
youtube
Propaganda:
WHERE DO I START.
First off: Lesbian activities. Ayase Naru and Rinne Amagi are very close friends and even end up living together. Naru is also only one of the few characters without a proper love interest which really helps further the Naru/Rinne ship.
Otoha Takanashi: often talks about fairy tales, but the only characters she ever sees as Princes are women. Baby lesbian, I love her.
Second: DRAMA. So two of the characters (Ito and Kouji) actually start dating, but their parents do not approve for reasons they are evasive about until it is later revealed in the story—[This part of the propaganda has been cut by admin due to possible spoilers]
Third: banger music. This series includes many covers of popular 90s dance tracks from band TRF, which I am fond of. It also has a lot of unique music written for the show itself which is also good, especially for a children’s show.
Trigger Warnings: It might need the emotional abuse tag for specifically one of the characters’ parents, who is a pretty extreme perfectionist when it comes to her daughter. But nothing else aside from that. It’s a kids’ show, so it never goes that far in terms of actual harm. Most things also get resolved peacefully.
