The Oldsmobile Golden Rocket

The Oldsmobile Golden Rocket was a two-seater show car built by Oldsmobile for the 1956 General Motors Motorama. The radically styled fiberglass concept, designed to resemble a rocket on wheels, was revised several times and displayed at various other auto shows, most notably at the 1957 Paris Motor Show where it generated much fanfare, 18 months after it was first revealed. The car was featured in the promotional short film Design for Dreaming along with the rest of the 1956 General Motors lineup.

Exterior

Similar to other Space Age show cars, the Golden Rocket was heavily influenced by the themes of aviation and space exploration. Its sleek, aerodynamic body was made entirely of lightweight fiberglass and finished in metallic bronze paint. Bullet-shaped chrome pieces resembling Dagmar bumpers were integrated into the front fenders in place of headlights as well as the sweeping rear fenders, giving the car an overall rocket-like appearance. Other notable features include a swept-back wrap-around windshield, which had already become a common design element by the mid-1950s, less prominent tailfins by contemporary standards and a split-window fastback roof design presaging the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. It rode on unique "dotted-line" whitewall tires. A later photo taken inside the GM Design Center in Warren, Michigan shows the car sporting a blue paint scheme.

Interior

The leather upholstery was finished in blue and gold. When a door was opened, the two-piece roof panel rose automatically in a similar manner to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL's gull-wing doors. The seats were raised up by three inches and swiveled outwards by 45 degrees, enabling easier access to the passenger compartment. One of its most pioneering innovations was the button-controlled tilt steering wheel, making it one of the first vehicles with such a feature. The speedometer was placed at the center of the foldable two-spoke steering wheel. The futuristic center console and control levers were inspired by an aircraft cockpit.

Powertrain

The car was powered by an upgraded 324-cubic inch Rocket V8 engine tuned to produce 275 horsepower (205 kW). According to interior photos, the Golden Rocket had an automatic transmission like all other Motorama show cars. Details on other internal components, however, are unavailable.

Design legacy

An early styling mock-up of the 1958 Chevrolet Corvette, built around 1956, depicted a fixed-roof fastback coupe with a rear design taken almost directly from the Golden Rocket show car, right down to the torpedo-shaped rear fenders and subtle tail fins. However, this design proposal never reached beyond the clay model stage and a more conventional design was used on the production model instead.

Seven years later, under the direction of General Motors head of design Bill Mitchell, the split rear window design would reappear on the 1963 Corvette Stingray coupe. It lasted for one model year before being changed to a single-piece rear window due to a problem of poor rear visibility.

Current status

It is unclear if the Golden Rocket still exists today. A common practice of General Motors in the 1950s was to destroy show cars after they fell out of usage in order to avoid liability concerns; however, the Golden Rocket is still unaccounted for with no confirmation it was crushed. There is photographic evidence that the car still existed as late as 1962, while several other show cars were scrapped earlier in 1959. The car was reportedly located somewhere in New Jersey, however the rumor still remains unconfirmed even after extensive investigation. Motorama historian David W. Temple believes that the Golden Rocket, along with other lost show cars, will likely never resurface again.

The W210 replaced the W124 model. he W210 E-class heralded a brand new design idiom for the Mercedes 'face', which would continue until the C209 CLK. This idiom was the mainstream fashion used by Mercedes-Benz for a long period, and it made it on the SL, C-class, CLK, CL and S-class of the time. The W210 quickly became the biggest seller in MB production.

Lion (she/her)

Poetic, romantic, and usually calm and patient. She loves summer, citrus, gold, tarot, and sun-shaped trinkets~! She also loves keeping fancy goldfish, with a particular passion for researching different species being developed, as well as the anatomy and lineage of them. In her free time, she does like to help Clouded Leopard with more whimsical jewelry designs.

Tiger (she/her)

Outgoing, bold, energetic, life of the party. Never a dull moment. She loves shooting the shit and playing basketball with the neighborhood guys. She also helps Clouded Leopard with her business, both in day-to-day tasks of making items and packing them out to ship. Generally more of a househusband💕

Clouded Leopard (she/her)

Adventurous, teasing, with a passion for alternate fashion, even running a business making clothes and jewelry. What exactly she does all day outside the business is a mystery, but she has an uncanny sixth sense about where interesting things are happening and will show up "out of nowhere."

Snow Leopard (she/her)

Extremely organized and health-conscious, maybe a bit neurotic;;; She loves her routines and her job, as well as occasionally hanging out with her coworkers. She loves organizing things and decorating, as well as having collections of various items; namely, decorative knives. She also loves softball and baseball, both watching and playing, as well as watching sports in general.

Housecat (he/him)

Bastard man with two braincells. Doesn't quite realize what a small cat he is (literally and figuratively). Causes a lot of chaos; half the time it's intentional and half the time he's really just fucking around and finding out. He’s much more capable than he lets on, but the others enjoy coddling him too much to call him on it often.

GROUP INFO:

Lion and Tiger are wives, and often wear complementary jewelry, Lion with dainty gold, sun-themed jewelry, and Tiger with silver and pewter jewelry usually shaped like stars. Clouded Leopard and Snow Leopard were childhood friends, and are also each others' primary partners. The werecats live just outside a big city, and they started as roommates to rent out a house together (Lion and Snow Leopard met at work and hit it off). The two couples figured out early on that the others were werecats like them, and were incredibly relieved at how well they all got along from the start. From there, things evolved, and they became a rarely seen Quad polycule.

Then one day Housecat just kinda showed up. The Quad thought he was amusing and decided to let him stick around, and now he's wormed his way into their hearts too. They spoil him rotten and he contributes to the household only in cuddles and and cuteness. He causes more chaos than anything else, but they can't stay mad at that cute face of his.

All of the werecats help model for Clouded Leopard's online shop. Snow Leopard and Lion love meditating and napping together. Tiger and Lion love watching Lion's fish swim around in their tanks together.

Lion and SL both work at the same place, an interior design company, and they respect each others' work but often butt heads when collaborating on the same project (or trying to decide on how their shared house should look).

Lion prefers more colorful, whimsical, and maximalistic styles, and SL prefers neutral colors and minimalist decoration. In terms of their shared house, CL is also more maximalistic like Lion, but more gothic in specific taste. Housecat aligns most closely with CL in terms of taste, but doesn't care too much about how their place is decorated. Tiger's idea of decoration is posters and magazine cutouts of scantily-clad women on the wall with some home workout equipment scattered around on the floor, and she gets the garage as her workout room to live out that dream.

The other werecats sometimes use Tiger's workout equipment too (except CL and Housecat, who don't like working out— although Housecat will sometimes hang out in the garage to watch the others work out or look at the posters).

You probably met Lion and SL first, through their job, and that's where their infatuation with you starts.

Tiger is the tallest, broadest, and most muscular of the group. Surprisingly, human form Housecat is the next tallest, but lanky. After that, SL is the next tallest, with Lion being just an inch or so shorter. CL is the shortest and daintiest of the group, coming in at around 5’2”.

(baby) dagon!

I've been wanting to crochet something JJK related for a while, but all my ideas have been too large (i.e., I fear that I will lose interest before getting across the finish line). With this project, I wanted to get more practice drafting my own pattern, but it turned out to be mostly freehanding.

Project dates: 2024/01/04-01/08

Yarn: as with most amigurumi projects I've done, this is just store brand worsted weight acrylic (red, cream).

If I were to make him again, I'd probably exaggerate his cheeks and use bigger eyes in order to make him look cuter/woobier. Also, as crocheted, he's quite top / front heavy. I'd need to make the base wider, push the head back, and/or reposition the feet for support.

Pattern: freehanded (notes below).

Head: Basically a sphere with local increases for the cheeks (approx 5 sts wide of the initial 42 st row).

Mouth/tentacles: half sphere with tentacles made with 4 ch to length, sc back, sl st between tentacles.

Body: To be honest, I'm not sure about what Dagon has going on for his back/tail, underneath his cloak. I took inspiration from this twitter thread of microcrochet for how the opening of the body is folded and stitched to create the back. (It includes proper instructions for how to crochet your own Dagon, though I'm not familiar with Japanese crochet terminology.) I crocheted a sphere to start, but realized with the "folded" shape that a starting oval would be better. Essentially, it's a bowl (with an oval base instead of the typical 6 st magic circle).

I looked at how crocheters executed the caterpillar "feet" for their own designs, and settled on the popcorn stitch. This video was an inspiration. Originally, I mathed out the body to have relative increases/decreases for segments, but ended up freehanding that section to result in a smooth oval shape.

Hands: Fingers are constructed similarly to tentacles (sc, ch3, 2sl st back). Each hand has 4 fingers spaced by an sc on a magic loop, then is worked in the round until desired length. I added floral wire on the interior for easier posing.

Next steps: Not sure if I want to crochet or sew a little cloak for him.

A young family with three children recently commissioned a renovation of their detached home located in the 20th-century periphery of Ghent. The house had previously been divided into two apartments but was transformed back into a singular dwelling.

Austro Daimler Bergmeister  ADR 630 

The name Austro Daimler is probably only known by few motorists. What may sound a bit like an Austrian import company for vehicles of Daimler-Benz was once an independent manufacturer of sporty luxury automobiles and also very successful in motorsports. After an interruption of the production caused by the war, Austro-Daimler began manufacturing cars again in 1920. At that time, a certain Ferdinand Porsche worked in the development department, who was also responsible for the brand’s first racing car, the ADS-R, which won a total of 43 races.  In 1931 their last cars were built and in 1935 the company was deleted from the commercial register. It wasn’t until 84 years later that the company was revived with a new automobile to bear the traditional name.

The result is a sports car with classic proportions. A long bonnet is followed by a sporty, short interior and and equally tightly cut rear. The front view is characterised by a dominant radiator grille and narrow headlight units extending into the fenders. What is striking is the considerable width of 2.08 meters, which makes the new Austro Daimler appear very massive. As with the Jaguar E-Type, the complete front opens forward as one bonnet piece. Gullwing doors in the style of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL give access to the interior, while the very round rear has a large tailgate with narrow lights below, drawn around the corners as continuous strip with integrated ‘Bergmeister’ lettering. This might be the reason for the name suffix ‘Shooting’, but the new Austrian car is not a classic Shooting Brake. If you enter the Bergmeister through the hinged doors, you will notice a modern interior with clear lines, which contrasts in its design with the classic quotes from the body. Driver and front passenger sit on comfortable sports seats, but are separated by a dominant strut above the center console, which grows quite high out of the dashboard. Those who would have expected just as classic round instruments when reviving a classic brand will be disappointed. In front of the driver appears a screen, which is probably unavoidable nowadays. It is operated via a controller mounted on the center console.

While the exterior design deliberately shows more classic features and overall looks harmonious, the technical side of the Bergmeister ADR 630 Shooting Grand is rather progressive and modern. The body is based on an aluminium spaceframe and thus provides a relatively moderate empty weight of 1,650 kilograms. In addition to the weight, the hybrid drivetrain  consists of an inline six-cylinder turbo engine supplied by Mercedes-AMG, which works in cooperation with a total of three electric motors, provides very impressive driving performance. The developers claim a system output of 1,214 hp and a maximum torque of 1,660 newtonmeters. This is expected to result in an acceleration time of 2.5 seconds to 100 kph and a topspeed of 330 kph. A 55 kWh lithium-ion battery installed in front of the rear axle provides 250 kilometers of purely electric range, while the total range should be just under 1,000 kilometers.
