With Saberbeak being written, I wanted to touch on more Brenda Lyons interior art, and this time we have Hatzel, a smilodon (saber-toothed tiger) plus Haast's eagle gryphon. @toadalled was very useful here in helping me to imagine how the sabers on the beaks would look. When it comes to saber cats, the sabers are an iconic feature that I never saw translated into gryphons. We tend to associate gryphons more with birds, and I wanted to really bring the cat out. Kieran was amazing with that. We looked at colors, too, even though they wouldn't be in the interior art. (You know, juuuust in case Hatzel ever ended up on a cover some day.) That brought in the influences of the black-billed magpies and Cooper's hawks that the character was closely associated with. Sister prides, if you will. I love Hatzel, and many of you have, too. There's a stereotype in gryphonic literature where there's a massive gryphon who is very full of themselves, just a brawler and a love whose arrogance and vanity are unmatched. Hatzel subverts that trope by being extremely level-headed. Whereas characters like Xavi, the denfather, are protective of the gryphlets, Hatzel protects everyone under her care. Of course, when she gets to let loose, there's no more ferocious gryphon in Belamuria. Though she gets PoV time in Eyrie and Ashen Weald, part of having such a stable character is that you're not presented with many opportunities to spotlight her, as she doesn't need to change and grow the way other characters do. It took the entire world changing around her before she earned her time back in the spotlight. With a character like this, the last of her kind (and based on extinct cats and birds), in a pride that's made up of several smaller prides, you're left wondering how she got that way. How her values were shaped by the loss of the saberbeak pride. Or, as the last ruler of Poisonmaw might say... "Family isn't who looks like you. It isn't even a feeling in your heart. It's in your beak and claws, and who you're willing to bloody them to protect."
I'm about 17k words into Saberbeak now, Hatzel's book, and I think we know who her family are.

Firen Lhain:  Chapter 1109:  Landfall:  Part III / III
Ruby Petal Burst out of the cave, landing on all fours to run to the side. Weiss used her Semblance to catapult herself, and the dogs out. The dogs quickly ran to Ruby's side as Weiss created 5 summoning circles, starting at her right , and moving behind her to her left. Each in turn summoned a Gryphon. The Gryphons pounced at the cave, each landing a foretalon on a Smilodon's neck and tossing it off to the side. Weiss' scoll started to speak with Ciel's voice, "Whiskey-Minor, you are blocking line-of-sight with the cave."
"Terrible sorry." Weiss voiced, as she used her Semblance to launch herself into a backwards flip, well practiced and elegant like a ballerina. The Gryphons dissolved and a colossal summon circle appeared in front of her, soon producing a colossal Arma-Gigas. Hecatoncheir and the four of Hugh opened fire into the cave, as Yang, Tyrannosaur, and Schwartzesonne walked up behind Weiss.
"You guys find anything?" Yang asked. Zwei barked at Nalai and then Yang. Nalai walked up to Yang, and produced a Hard-Dust map of the cave, with a large, prominent dot that filled he cave moving outwards at a tremendous pace. "Uh?"
"Yes, Honey?" Weiss sweetly asked her.
"Maybe you should move your sweet little snow angel ass out of here?" Yang nervously asked.
"That is a good point." she said, and looked down at the dogs, "Zwei, Nalai?"
Zwei let out a happy bark and ran to stand right beside her. Nalai quickly ran to join them as Weiss summoned her Semblance, launching the 3 back up to the ridge line.
"Sis?" Yang asked, and Ruby looked at her, "Maybe think like Qrow?"
"Oh!" Ruby exclaimed, and Petal Burst away.
The ground started to shake and the air became thick. Stronger, and stronger, until the dragon's head appeared out of the cave. The moment it appeared it was struck by Hecatoncheir's line rifle, and recoiled back inside.
"Get your scaly ass out here so I can kick it!" Yang shouted, and once again the ground started to shake as a great shriek erupted from the cave. Hecatoncheir let out another line rifle shot into the cave mouth, quickly silencing it. "Hey!" Yang shouted up at the cliff, and Hecatoncheir moved her weapon to a carry.
"Did I?.." her vocober asked.
"I'm sorry!" Penthesilea stated.
"She can be a little... hot headed..." Jaune uttered.
"She wants a fight, I can let her fight." Hecatoncheir stated.
"At least let it come out?" Penthesilea asked.
"That I can do." Hecatoncheir said, and aimed her weapon towards the cave mouth. "You going to say something, boss?"
"You are adorable when you are engaged." Midsummer Knight said to her.
"Not like that, about the dragon!" Hecatoncheir stated.
"They are the stars; we are their understudies." Midsummer Knight replied.
Hecatoncheir let out a sigh. "That sounds like something you would say. So, what, we just do what they tell us?"
"What they ask us." Midsummer Knight. stated.
"And, uh, what do they ask us?" Hecatoncheir asked
"Let the dragon poke his head out." Jaune said, and Hecatoncheir turned towards him.
"And?"
"And?" Jaune asked, and shrugged. "Kind of our first time slaying a dragon."
"I believe Yang would beg to differ." Penthesilea said with a brilliant smile.
"What?" Hecatoncheir asked.
"Nevermind." Jaune stated.
"Huntresses must think on their feet, Ms. Citrine." Weiss stated, and Zwei let out an affirmative bark. She crouched down to pet him as the dragon's head appeared from the cave once again.
"Yeah, you heard me!" Yang shouted, and the head turned over to look at her. The dragon stepped out of the cave and roared at Yang.
"Fire." Jaune said. Citrine and Hugh started to fire. Jaune knocked his own bow. He pulled it back, bending the gravity well, and loosed. The arrow flew so fast it looked like a line, traveling into the dragon's skull, quickly stunning it. Yang launched herself forward to punch it in the head, causing it to stagger.
Jaune then looked to the cliff above the cave, and dozens of Grimm started to appeare. "Weiss, if you could?" he asked.
"Of course, Jaune-dear." she said lovingly. She then used her Semblance to launch herself. Penthesilea unfurled her wings and used the thrusters in her feet to join her. Jaune held up his shield, which Nora quickly jumped onto it so he could launch her into the air. Susan jumped up and rode the wind to follow them.
Midsummer Knight stepped up, "I'd like to accompany them?" he asked.
"Uh, yeah?" Jaune replied, as he put away his shield and knocked another arrow. The pixies started to float around Midsummer Knight, and gave him a dark glow. He then leapt up into the air, and what looked liked Hard-Light Dust thrusters appeared behind him, quickly launching him to the other side.
Tyrannosaur spun around, using his tail bard to strike a number of Beowulves, Ursae, and Smilodons that were rushing in.
The dragon seemed to recover, and started to flap it's wing's. Hugh and his White Knight squickly shot the dragon's wings, stunning them. Schwartzesonne started to glow dark and so did the dragon. It was quickly pulled to the ground, barely able to move when Ruby swept through. She paused momentarily as the blade of her scythe hit it's neck, but fired Crescent Rose. She cut about a third of the way through it's neck and used Petal Burst to escape it's clumsy claw. Hyperborea rammed the dragon with a great shock of wind, and Ruby made for a second approach. Yang's hair and eyes began to glow as she punched up on the dragon's head just as Ruby hit the neck a second time. Ruby fired Crescent Rose again, and the competing forces took the dragon's head off. The body quickly began to dissolve, but certainly wasn't going to disappear any time soon.
* * *
A cloaked Ilia watched the cave entrance. The dragon was dissolving, but that doesn't meant the rest of the Grimm were just up and running. They were creatures of horrendous malice and enmity, and were not so easily dispelled. The battle still raged on, and she watched. Luckily for her, both of the women she was looking for might as well have had alabaster skin compared with the ebony darkness that surrounded them. It was made worse by the wanning sun, and how they soon would have halflight and then darkness. Her eyes caught the glint of some great paler when the red, shimmering eyes caught her own. It was unmistakably Salem, and she stood up, immediately dropping her cloak. Jaune immediately made a great leap to land in front of her, and that was her notice to flee. She cloaked once again and made to climb up the cliff. Salem looked at Jaune smuggly and took a couple of steps forward, only to be impaled by a falling Penthesilea and her spear. Nora's hammer landed a moment later, completely crushing Salem.
"Pen, hold tight." Jaune said, and turned back to the cliff, "Ciel! Evac! Everyone!"
"M'Lord!" Ciel replied, and Gog came shambling up.
"Like - this, she - hardly - seems - a - threat."
"The Truth said she can't be killed." Jaune stated.
"Pressuming - she - will - recover?" Gog asked.
"Maybe you two should take off." Yang voiced.
"And leave this for us more able to flee." Weiss said with a smile. Jaune looked between them for a moment before nodding and turning away. He leapt back to a ledge half way up the cliff. He picked up Ilia and leapt the rest of the distance. As he peaked the cliff, he saw the airships coming to collect the First Roboticized Brigade Group as Ironwood fought his way through a large group of Beowulves that had tried to outflank them. A great noise, and a great golden flash of light, causing everyone to look at it. It was a golden, serpentine dragon, simply floating in the air. It did have wings, but did not seem to use them, at least not for flight.
"I am the Golden Dragon of Sunlight." his great voice bellowed, and echoed around for a moment, "You have vanished my shadow, and you have my thanks." He then turned to the Dragon Knights, "Those of you who bear my image will be granted the power to part the darkness." A likeness of a dragon with sunlit rays appeared on the shoulders of the Dragon Knights. He then turned to Yang. "You who bears my name," he said, and turned to Taiyang, "and the father who named you, I give you the blessing of my rage."
"Sweet." Yang stated.
"What?" Taiyang asked.
Their skin momentarily glew a golden hue before disappearing.
"M'Lord?" one of the Dragon Knights asked.
"We'll... have to find out later." Baron Cain stated, "For now, this doesn't change our plan. We will be the last to withdraw."
"M'Lord." the Dragon Knight replied.
* * *
Halflight fell as the battle continued. Tyrannosaur turned towards Yang, "Go." he said.
"You sure?" Yang asked, and Tyrannosaur flapped his wings in reply.
"Penthesilea?" Weiss asked, and took an expectant step towards her, looking up at her adoringly. "Could you?"
Penthesilea dismissed her weapons, picking Weiss up in her arms. Yang blasted off as a colossal Arma-Giga fell down and impaled the remnants of Salem. Penthesilea took off as Tyrannosaur, Hyperborea, and Schwartzesonne continued fighting.
* * *
Hyperborea, Tyrannosaur, and Schwartzesonne stood perfectly in a line as an airship descended to pick them up.

ayyy so here are some of the prehistoric gryphons I designed forever ago  The ice age gryphon is a terror bird/saber-toothed tiger hybrid and is HUUUUGE like omg, taller than a car! She’s also big and buff and gay The second one is some kind of pterosaur (probably a gnathosaurus or ctenochasma) and a thrinaxodon (the very first “mammal”)! He’s small and bony and eats a lot of fish!

Fanimatronic Details and More...
I’ve been trying to work on more... ‘developed’ art, but my art program is being rather stupid, so I decided to do work on contextualising my various fan-characters for FNAF-verse... Three completely ‘new’ locations, so far, and thoughts about one we only hear about in a teaser, coupled with potential extrapolation from that... Long Post! Infos under the cut.
Oscar's Exotic Playzone
A subsidiary of Fazbear Entertainment, with a greater focus on entertainment than on food, despite the presence of an integrated food court. Picked up in popularity after the decline of Freddy’s in the late 80s, as Fazbear Entertainment started to look into other avenues of business.
To drum up additional positive press and greater foot-traffic, the business has a ‘partnership’ with a zoo, with the hopes of helping to raise some awareness and even funds for helping endangered animal species around the world.
Location – New York state…
Partner – A zoo in New York City…
Animatronic Cast:
Oscar the Okapi – Black and white colour motif; Main mascot, indoor playround
Tammy the Tapir – Mauve and indigo colour motif; Food court
Rocky the Pangolin – Beige and tawny colour motif; Bowling alley with at least five lanes
Corey the Tree Kangaroo – Red and gold colour motif; Arcade
Each of the Playzone animatronics are possessed, just as with most of the other Fazbear bots, but these are not playing host to ‘regular ghosts’ and instead have something a little more... abnormal... as their passengers. In a way, this difference makes them far more dangerous than their ‘cousin robots’…
Just as with other Fazbear animatronics, the Playzone cast seek to kill. For them, stolen life-force is fuel to enable them to stay in those bodies, and they will target anyone and everyone who seems to be ‘good prey’. However, bypassing the AIs of the robots is difficult, which forces them to make a compromise… While younger prey would yield greater returns, at least the animatronics’ built-in minds don’t innately reject preying on older people…
Hunter's Adventure World
When Oscar's Exotic Playzone expanded due to increasing popularity, Fazbear Entertainment started another complex with a slightly different goal. This new location was to do something similar with natural history while partnering with a museum, and every animatronic character portrays an extinct animal.
Location – New York state…
Partner – A museum in New York City…
Animatronic Cast:
Hunter the Allosaurus – Black colour motif; Main mascot
Dipper the Dodo – Grey colour motif
Trix the Thylacine – Cream colour motif
Sam the Smilodon – Orange colour motif
Just as with the cast for the Playzone, eventually, these too become possessed...
Draco’s Dreamland
...All animatronics here are mythical creatures… Both an eatery and an entertainment venue. The menu is largely made up of items that are designed to 'seem out of this world'...
Location – Not sure yet...
Animatronic Cast:
Draco the Dragon – Green colour motif; Main mascot
Electra the Gryphon – Brown colour motif
Lune the Unicorn – White colour motif
Cinnamon the Phoenix – Red colour motif
...And now for my ideas for more 'canon-y' locations...
Chica’s Party World
Mentioned in one of the teasers for Sister Location as something that exists... I think this place may have been (in-universe) an attempt to focus on girls. Stereotypically, girls don't like robots as much, but make a place where the animatronics are all female characters, and that may be a different story.
The various versions of Chica were meant to be swapped in and out as needed...
Animatronic Cast:
Chica the Chicken/Toy Chica/Funtime Chica
Happy Frog the Gecko
Wisteria the Fox – Mauve colour motif; ‘Pretty girl’
Nike the Cheetah – Green colour motif; ‘Sporty girl’
Rose the Bumblebee – Yellow colour motif; ‘Princess’
Just as reference, I came up with Wisteria, Nike, and Rose.
Foxy’s Funhouse
Entirely theoretical, but... if there may have been an 'all-girls' location, then there may have been an 'all-boys' one, too. Of the FazBand, the fox is the most likely to be given that sort of attention... and just as with Chica's Party World, the different Foxy versions were meant to swap in and out.
Animatronic Cast:
Foxy the Pirate/Toy Foxy (Mangle)/Funtime Foxy
Roma the Wolf – Grey colour motif; A sort of ’base’ for the Twisted Wolf from the novels… the character was made as a ‘first-mate and rival’ for Foxy… Maybe have conspiratorially whispering to kids about how silly/etc Foxy is, and Foxy doing the same about Roma, creating an interactive ‘storytime’…?
Long John the Macaw – Blue colour motif; A hyacinth macaw with a tendency for rude jokes
For reference, I extrapolated the wolf into a character, and made Long John. Oh, and yes... that name is a bit of a cheeky/rude joke in and of itself.
Bonnie’s Karaoke Bar
This one is more focused on the idea of a music-entertainment venue than anything else, and despite the inclusion of the word 'bar' in the name, is still a family-targeting location. As with the other two, the Bonnie varieties were intended to be swapped around, not that there are as many to 'choose' from...
Animatronic Cast:
Bonnie the Rabbit/Toy Bonnie
Music Man – Honestly, I needed a 'musician-type' that wasn't a rabbit... I may just make one, myself, but for the time being, this freaky cymbal-spider will have to do...

Map time! Here's the map of Belamuria, the setting of the Gryphon Insurrection series, starting with Eyrie. This map was made by Jeff Brown, who promised a map if the series hit five books. The original idea was for the map to be divided into sixths with one in each book. Hence the Redwood Valley in the southeast is perhaps larger than it would be on a to-scale map (I like to think this is Kia or Cherine's map, perhaps one they both contribute to, so their home is larger). Then again, perhaps it's an Ashen Weald map, with how the kjarr and bog are featured. The tagline for the series was "interesting gryphons in interesting locations," and Belamuria offers that. Though the series begins in a redwood weald (a weald is an untamed, overgrown forest), it heads out to underwater settings, the frozen aneda taiga, valleys of poisonous monitor lizards, high peaks, abandoned kjarrs (forests becoming wetlands), infected bogs, plague cities collapsed through limestone erosion, inland seas of luminescent, toxic jellies and basilosauruses, jungles who only spend half the year above water, underground cave systems of all sorts, desert red rock canyons or plateaus of toxic pools ruled by flamingos, coasts with toxic algae blooms killing all mammalian life, not to mention the Abyssal Naze, where water and land vanish into darkness.
Making the map while writing book 4 of a series where I'm currently working on book nine presented some challenges. I think the mountains are generally a bit bulkier, wider, and fill in more space than I originally estimated. (Jeff is working off my sketches here, so those errors are mine. He did such an amazing job, down to the reeve's pet lurking in the Crackling Sea.) Books necessitate a rectangular map, but I'd imagine things stretched out more. The Winter Jungle would extend down and far past the edge. Speaking of past the edge, Goldrin Goldpaw's pawprints cover Ashfoot Isle, directly south of Sandpiper's Dune, and The Wrecks are due south from there. The Pitohui Eyrie might be a bit farther off the coast, too. And the kjarr and bog would be a little skinnier, though I like having things spread out to refer to when writing books like The Crackling Sea.
It's strange to think that after nine books, we've visited most of Belamuria. GryphIns, despite the tagline, isn't meant as a travelogue. It has a strong series plot arc. War and disease don't often stay contained, spreading like a wildfire across an entire continent. Yet the same might be said of kindness. Okay, back to writing Saberbeak for me. I just needed to bring up the map, and I couldn't remember if I'd shared it on Tumblr yet. Fun trivia fact: but because of how many different printers make the editions of GryphIns in different countries, it's very difficult to get a proper two page spread. Reevesbane often has it, but with other books, the printing wasn't reliable enough due to how the binding works. That's also why Reevesbane has the two page spread of a certain villain... because their body is elongated, it doesn't necessarily matter how it's bound, since they're meant to look a little off. In most editions, if you could unbind it, you'd see that the left page has all of the Crackling Sea and the right page also has all of it. Since the middle of the page is lost in binding, it tends to give the illusion of going across both pages together. (Though, depending on your country or even what store you order from, it can look better or worse.) Back to smilodon gryphon writing, though. Pridelord's copy edits had a slight delay but are back on track, for those asking. Once they're in, I'll go back to Pridelord so it'll release as soon as publishing allows. -Vale
