you CANNOT say there’s a snake called “bandy-bandys” and not provide any more info
Aha! You've played into my trap and now I get to talk about bandy-bandys!
The bandy-bandy (Vermicella annulata), sometimes also called the hoop snake, is a cute little snake native to a wide range in Australia. They are adorable and perfect and I love them.
Tumblr media
They're very small - around two feet long - and prefer to eat other snakes. Because they're so small, they mostly eat tiny blindsnakes. Despite being elapids, a family known for potent venom, bandy-bandy venom is very weak (one of my friends was actually bitten once pulling one of these guys out of a condemned building, he says he's had worse bee stings). They're reluctant to bite and generally very placid snakes.
They're the only land snakes in Australia with a black-and-white striped patterning, making them impossible to mistake! But that's not even the coolest thing about them...
Their defensive display is super unique! They throw up sections of their bodies into hoops in an attempt to disorient predators!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love them so much. They're so cool.

listen, PSA to all good omens fans. i’ve seen this “fun fact” going around that snakes can’t see stars, to use for crowley angst purposes. this is not true, there’s nothing preventing them from seeing stars. snakes in general don’t have great vision, since it’s not their primary sense, but snakes are physically able to look up and see stars, albeit blurrily. HOWEVER a true fun fact is that snakes will often do a behavior called “stargazing” which is a symptom of underlying sickness, often neurological, when they act wobbly/tilt backwards and stare straight up. i think this has even more angst potential and is actually true, do with that what you will ((:

Does Crowley Snake have to unhinge his jaw to show affection to Azirabirb?
This is somewhat irrelevant to the ask, but I'm going to hit you with a snake fact while I'm here:
It is a common misconception that snakes unhinge their jaws to swallow larger prey. Rather, the bones of their lower jaw aren't fused and are connected by a very elastic ligament that allows their jaws to open wider than would normally be allowed!
Now onto the actual point of the ask: if I'm reading this correct, you could be implying that Crowley could be doing some silly nom-nom stuff for affection, but to that I'd have to say no.
In my mind, Snake Crowley shows affection to Azirabirb by wrapping around him, holding him with his wings, and allowing Azirabirb to touch his back and head (snakes can be incredibly shy about having their faces touched, and anywhere near their spine).
Thank you for the ask! Have a little doodle! :DD

Crowley CAN See Stars Still
Okay. So I have seen the theory that The Almighty took away Crowley’s ability to see the stars and nebulas he created by giving him snake eyes. As an owner of a snake, I can help you understand a bit better!
Crowley has bad vision during the day most likely. However, snakes are extremely sensitive to UV light. Explains Crowley’s sunglasses! His eyes could very easily get damaged and his vision would be even WORSE. (one of the many reasons why he only takes them off indoors)
Don’t Panic. HE STILL WOULD SEE THE STARS. At night? That’s a WHOLE DIFFERENT STORY. Snakes actually see very well at night because of being able to see infrared light. Also, they are able to differentiate heat. So, Crowley, if he does possess dichromatic vision or not, would be able to see his creations.
Infrared can pass through dense regions of gas and dust in space with less scattering and absorption. So, infrared can also reveal objects in the universe that cannot be seen in visible light. So he’d be able to see this:
HUMAN VISION (left) VS INFRARED VISION (right)
Tumblr media
I hope this eases some of your panic about Crowley not being able to see stars he created with his snake eyes after The Fall! 😌💫
(How this became the MOST LIKED THING on my Tumblr account is beyond me.)

Funny enough, Angel is actually right about Pentious having two dicks, since male snakes DO actually have two dicks called hemipenes, researchers say it benefits them during mating!

I am writing something that I guess is in the Weird Fiction genre (I will note that I don’t know if I actually believe this is a genre that exists) in an Australian (sort of) setting.
Anyway what that means practically is: for dinner, I’m reading through the Wikipedia pages of different Australian snakes, because if I’m going to offhandedly mention a species of snake in a first draft it had better be one that is in the right habitat.
I didn’t know we had the most venomous snake in the world in this country but I sure am charmed and delighted by the way the most venomous snake in the world is described in its Wikipedia article:

She’s a lover not a fighter 🥰 One of her bites contains enough venom to kill 100 human adults 🥰🥰

"So I have a Job. It's a weird job. I get in strange situations in my job. I get exposed to things. I'm often there when big guy's up to something ridiculous. Like, for example, did you know for every snake on earth there is one snake dick? And-- at first you might think, well yeah, that makes sense. But actually, you know, only half the snakes have dicks. And that means that every snake that has a dick has two dicks. And that's a true fact about our world. That's the kind of information I run across as I'm doing my job. And that job is to eliminate distraction. And you seem like distractions. So would you like to turn around and go the other way, or would you like to see if I can keep myself from punching you too hard?

Did you know snakes fart? Here's a video of a snake farting
https://youtu.be/jrnxn6FVjQc?si=PwA3jcImlIDdofRu
Does Nagini ever fart?
Ah. Bathroom humor. Er...thank you.
I was indeed aware. As for Nagini...the look she is giving me is a signal I should refrain from continuing my original sentence.

Are there any snakes that you feel are crazy and don’t seem like something that is from earth
You will never be able to convince me that Arabian sand boas aren't a child's drawing of a snake somehow come to life.
Tumblr media
Also, blunt-headed tree snakes look like they're form a planet where they have sentient spaghetti noodles instead of snakes:
Tumblr media
Elephant trunk snakes look like someone tried to describe a boa to someone from another planet and they reconstructed one based on that description (and also it melted a little):
Tumblr media
Tentacled snakes have tentacles at the ends of their noses that look like little mustaches. They're obviously from a much cooler planet where snakes have mustaches:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the spider-tailed horned viper has such an impressive lure adaptation it's hard to believe it's real! They have lures at the end of their tails that look so much like spiders when they move them (to attract birds, their favorite prey!), it's incredible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The coolest thing is that all of these snakes, weird and wonderful as they are, have very real evolutionary reasons to look the way they do! It's pretty dang incredible, and I feel so lucky to be alive at the same time as so many awesome snakes!

Hey snake side of tumblr, what’s a good snake companion for a tiefling wildfire druidess who wields a weird magic gun?
As an ADHD person who is aware of the potential of the neurodivergent community, I’m sure I’ll get cool answers if I just put the right tags.

Creature Feature!
Today's feature:
Milk Snakes
Tumblr media
[Picture I.D: a snake coloured in black, red and white. It's curled up and hanging it's tongue out.]
Scientific name: Lampropeltis triangulum
Location: Most parts of North America
Danger meter: 1/5 (not harmful to humans, not known to attack)
Do not mistake with: coral snakes, tricolor hognose snake, corn snake
Good pets?: Yes! Very common in captivity. Recommended to beginners
Tumblr media
[ I.D: a GIF of a milk snake slithering on a rock.]
Behaviour:
In the wild, milk snakes tend to eat lizards and small mammals primarily. In captivity, most breeders feed them mice.
They live up to 12 years. A female can give a clutch of up to 24 eggs (depends on type and region), which hatch after two months of careful incubation. The eggs are fully white and make an oval shape.
They eat every two weeks (hatchlings more often).
Fun fact:
The name of the milk snakes comes from the fact farmers used to find them in hay in cow barns. The cows were terrified of the snakes, and they didn't give milk. The farmer were convinced the snakes were drinking the milk out of the cows.
We now know that no species of snake can devour milk, however it's a nice throwback name.
