Sending a headcannon and I got carried away:

Our Dragon-Parented Dragonslayers needed to learn modern Fioran (or whatever languages Earthland X777 had) after arriving in the future and Natsu's the one with the biggest grasp of it.

These kids were from 400 years in the past when there was a huge dragon-feud going on. If Nirvana and Dragnof are any indication, multiple civilizations fell during that time and with it the loss of several languages. Whatever language they had been taught (which was likely at least one form of dragonic at the time...because dragon parents), it's probably considered extinct in X777.

But thing is I think Natsu may have been the only one to get lessons on how to read and write Fioran.

Gajeel? He got stuck in Phantom Lord, which (to put it nicely) had a sink-or-swim philosophy towards it's members. He probably picked up on a bit on his own, but likely also struggles reading job assignments and won't let anyone know he is (side headcannon: our favorite linguist Levy helped him out once she found out he was struggling).

Wendy? The kid who first got adopted by a runaway prince from another dimension and then by a 400 year old ghost? I don't think either of them know Fioran themselves, much less could teach it. On the bright side, she probably also knows ancient Nirvit.

The Two Sabergoofs? Same case as Gajeel. Rogue's hit with a double whammy since he supposedly hung around Phantom Lord before getting yeeted to Sabertooth's guildmaster. Though this probably leads to a few complications once Sting is guildmaster and has to start filling out paperwork.

So much to everyone's surprise, out of all of them Natsu - who got seven-years worth of supportive family at the orphan daycare - is the one who can read/write in modern language best.

It's not a unique headcannon by any means but one of my favorites. Thoughts?

Y'see this is what im talkin bout, some good ol' analysis stuff.

I had a post aaaaagggeeees ago (if i find it back i may link it) bout like a crack situation where the team got forced to speak their first languages and natsu n wendy got stuck speaking their og ancient fioran languages and no one could understand wtf they were saying (and they couldnt understand each other neither bcus i had it that they were speakin different dialects of ancient fioran but details.). But i am gettin off track.

I always hc that most of the slayers didnt end up in Fiore when they got shot to the future, itd be kinda boring if they all ended up on the same continent. So Gajeel for me landed in Bosco so he learnt Boscan first as his modern language before he made his way to fiore to learn the language there by osmosis. I think Gajeel as a character especially to me with his spying skills and generally personality is super discerning with his desire to know information. So i think he's largely self taught with everything when he was on his own and knows 2 languages fully- Boscan and Fioran- but his fioran is weaker especially when it comes onto the writing part. And he vaguely knows phrases and terms from a bunch of diff languages.

Wendy landed closer to the border of Fiore and Seven before mystogan picked her up. I'd like to think that the language in Edolas and Earthland is largely the same orally (but it'd have a whole different written language) so he managed to teach her how to speak modern fioran but write in modern edolas. Which was a weird disconnect when the team found out down the line lmao. When he left her with cait shelter she picked up that additional language (which is a purely oral language) and is probs the only person left in modern fiore who can speak it (Levy loves her for it)

Sting got yote to Caelum before somehow making his way over to Minstrel then Fiore, he speaks a weird combo package of slangs from all 3 and he's not fully fluent in all of em (fioran is his best) and sometimes when he can't remember a word in one he'll supplement it with a word from another. He's ironically better at the written languages with them than speakin em.

Rogue met Sting in Minstrel briefly (didnt stick around with each other and then ran into each other again in fiore) but Rogue never picked up on Minstrel's language easily so he only picked up on fioran when he eventually made his way over. He knows brief smatterings and terms from other languages from his time hanging out with phantom lord but is only fluent in just the one.

Natsu's the only sucker who landed squarely in Fiore and was picked up by Makarov who had him fluent enough in speaking modern fiore before he got him back to the guild. He didn't get around to starting him with writing so that was a task for the others to teach and get him up to speed (to varying success. His handwriting sucks ass). I also like to think he hung around a decent amount with Levy when he was younger (he liked listening when she read her stories aloud) so he has a weird mixed bag of being able to read and understand a whole bunch of random language bits despite not actively trying to learn em.

now that im a lil more awake and clear headed for now am gonna continue based off of theSelin and his attachment to his capes posts I made last night bc i got thinkin bout maybe *why* he would be so attached to the capes other then well- not being neurotypical jdgsdfgsdj

and I got big sad ideas so am gonna put them under the cut

So it also got me to thinking a little bit bout Selin’s parents bc I know damn well that if they hadn’t been killed then Selin would’ve grown up to be a pretty decent person emotionally bc dragons have a LOT of needs that even a village of people cant keep up to bc it requires at least one dragon to properly raise another.  So I was thinking bout every time Selin’s parents both had to go do something important they would always try to set everything up so the village could take care of him just enough until they returned, and for these two dragons specifically it would involve wrapping him in a blanket that had emeralds woven into it. (They believed Emeralds had protective and comforting properties and they did, just only for Selin though)  Selin still remembers the day, his parents set everything up for one of them to be back within two hours. Just like every other time they were very apologetic and comforting while he asked why couldn’t just one of them stay and then when the other comes back the first one could go? They took turns holding him and comforting while the other was setting things up. They were getting him tired and sleepy so he would sleep for the time they were gone to make it easier on the village folk.  He remembers them wrapping him in the blanket that had so many small pieces of emeralds in it that it looked as if the blanket itself was green and how when it shifted in the light it was like a new pattern formed on it. The same blanket he would hide under during really loud storms before he learned to not be afraid of them, before he grew to love the storms. He remembers drifting to sleep as his parents kissed his head before saying ‘we’ll be back’ before they left.  Then he remembers waking up hours later, when his parents had left it was bright outside and now it was dark. There were at least 10 different sets of eyes stareing at him. Sure the village folk would take care of selin but they’ve never been this close to him while he was awake, let alone when his parents were so late to return. They weren’t sure how the young dragon was going to react.  The first hour was calm with some anxiety, the folk helped him tie the blanket around him like a cape so he could pace when he wasn’t looking out the windows. He remembers them muttering trying to figure out what to do, while he could understand them they couldnt understand him as he hadn’t yet learned how to speak english other than ‘i, me, you, them’, he only knew how to speak in dragon tongue.  the second hour is where his panic started to set in as a storm was starting. How would his parents find their way back in the storm?? it’d be really difficult to see! What if they miss the village and get lost?? and couldn’t find their way back? flying in rain can be a lot harder than flying in clear weather especially if you’re already tired! The villagers had a hard time trying to calm him down as he started to run through the house, hoping maybe they had already come home and they were sleeping and wanted to let him sleep and that’s why they didn’t wake him up or come out yet!  After that he just remembers running in the rain, crying both literally and crying out for his parents. The village folk were worriedly shouting his name while some chased him just so if he got lost they could guide him back. Which did eventually happen.  He remembers sitting and looking up at the pieces of the sky he could see through the trees while his blanket did its best to protect him from the rain. Sure he was terrified of each thunder he heard and every flash of lightning but he was more terrified bout the fact his parents weren’t back yet. That they had just... disappeared. He remembers holding on tight to the blanket. Until eventually one of the villagers that did follow him walked over to him and simply just said “Come on, lets go and get you warmed up. You’re shaking like a leaf.” and he listened. he walked with them all the way back to the village, crying hiccuping and shaking the entire time. That was the first night most of the village stayed in his house. It wasn’t the last either, every time he requested for some of them to stay the night they would without question. He always held on close to the blanket which as he got bigger eventually turned into a cape as it got too small to be used as a blanket.  Before moving into the city he got replicas made with dyed fabric instead of emeralds and the village folk even added on little details to remind him that they were still there for him like how he was for them.  In the city he never wears the original, for fear of losing the last memento of his parents that he can take with him. Sure he has the house back at the village but it’s basically been converted into a church based around him at this point so it’s not the same. It’s not like the blanket.  He still catches himself thinking that his parents just.. disappeared and maybe one day they’ll show up at the village. Though the more reasonable part of him says otherwise.

also okay as long as im here im just gonna say it. the choice that he xuan gives shi qingxuan is fucking brutal but i actually think its probably as fair as it could be. sqx didnt know about or participate in what happened to hx but they did benefit from it greatly while hx lost EVERYTHING and i can understand he xuan’s thinking of “if you really feel bad for what happened to me then you have to make a sacrifice and understand the suffering and this is as clean as its going to get” and theres a bit where sqx is trying to beg for mercy but cant get the words out which im guessing is bc theres no good argument!! what happened was fucked up!!

The Half-Maquillage Woman - kind of interesting monster idea bc women and aging…. yeah. however i think this would be a lot stronger if there were a) more girls and this was b) discussed or illustrated at all prior to this moment. still interesting that its included knowing the author is a woman tho and there’s been comments on how ling wen is perceived vs pei ming. this book does keep giving me hope for interesting female character arcs i really want it to deliver something

this book is so entertaining bc i already saw spoilers for the feng xin/jian lan/cuo cuo reveal and yet i could never have predicted the circumstances that brought it about. imagine being feng xin. the heavens are in an uproar and your only friend/enemy has been jailed for possible fetus spirit-related crimes but he escapes along with this female ghost who keeps causing problems. you figure “fuck it lets see if dianxia kept his old phone number” and he has but then he hangs up on you. you’ve got fuckall else to do so you go find him. mu qing is there but he’s in his disguise the two of you were using so you could watch over his highness while staying aloof. you think you see hua cheng only he’s a chiild for some goddamn reason but who knows at this point. the female ghost is also there and theres a fetus spirit climbing trees and biting your arrows in half. you realize the female ghost is your ex and the little demon is your son. it bites you. what do you do

amazing that despite everything going on everyone is still playing along with the “fu yao” persona when it would probably be easier to drop pretenses at this point. then again tbh if i could explain my actions to my friends while pretending to be a third party.... i probably would so.. carry on

I've decided to make this post about it, which I will write as I go, because I've seen a lot of discussion about the movie without actually hearing about what happens in it... so uh... yeah. Here are my thoughts as I think them:

Oh btw the Kingdom Hearts collection is coming to XBone sometime in 2020! I dont have to buy a whole ass PS4 just for that!

I started collecting stuff so I can get that secret ending. Whatever is left requires me to visit Hollow Bastion and progress a bit. And I completed the Hercules Cup a couple times too to spite it and get some shots of Cloud.

I took a nap after all that and had a dream that Merlin's little hovel had diegetic music, coming from a little crackly radio. What a boring ass dream.

---I have 3 pages of the Hundred Acre Wood to go through. I cannot stress enough how much I hate these minigames. How the hell am I supposed to track Tigger's tree stump jumping when the camera does a fade in at every single platform? It's hard to understand what's going on. Why not a static overhead shot?!

On to the Hollow Bastion. I would like to think I can finish this game tonight.

Secret ending! I knew about this scene but didnt know it was A. even IN KH1, and B. although being meant for KH2 it teased what ended up being a big moment in 358/2 Days. So the Organization was established before CoM with this ending. How much about sequels is actually planned out before game development is finished? Was the girl at the end supposed to be what they were thinking Kairi might look like? She looked more Final Fantasy than normal.

I actually did miss this game a bit. Didn't miss the Hundred Acre Wood stuff, didn't miss the platforming stuff. Going from KH3 straight into KH1 on PS2 was ROUGH my dude. Chain of Memories on PS2 is up next.

In that one and from now on I think I'll try to add pictures for context. As I make these parts I make it them multiple long posts with --- to separate days or events so I'll have time to put pictures in before posting.

So to summarize simply, MAU is an AU wtih monsters of original concept and mythological legend roam wild and free with humans in a wide world! There are 4 cities; the Northern, across the sea, are dragon-tamers - the Southern are a Steampunk-themed unifying city! To the West, the City filled with cyberpunk and racist humans, and to the East, a developmental city working to have similar relations with monsters that merge their cultures together. Scattered in-between are tribes and societies of their own standing, making their homes away from the laws and constructs of society; important landmarks include the Monster Sanctuary outside of the Southern City, the 5 mountains in the North, the Haunted Fields where Demigods are rumoured to play, and a few hidden cities belonging to fae, elves, and other such creatures!

When it comes to how the characters of Okami are written into this AU, we didn’t really need to change much as the fantasy is kind of written on its own - we did Westernize it just a little, though. Poncles have taken the form of different sorts of sprites, and their societies are widespread across the country, though they scarcely leave their homes, much less on their own. Some of them have wings, others learn to navigate the world through other means. I can’t say much about the other races involved in the AU, as my moirail is smarter than me in every way and actually has better explainations for em, but with that out of the way we can get onto CHARACTERS THEMSELVES!! The three I’ll be covering are my main muses, Ammy, Issun, and Chibi- we’ll start with Issun, though.

Issun’s origin story didn’t change much from canon, actually. Overbearing grandfather, something something rebellious, ran away from home. For a long time he took to a life of petty crime and hung about the cities; on a short adventure in the woods, he was attacked by a bird who tore off one wing and ripped half of the other. He ended up cutting off what was left himself and struggled to heal from those wounds for a long time. While he can’t fly anymore, he can hover for a few seconds - trying to do this for too long usually results in pain all along his back, though, so sometimes he bandages what’s left of his wings to prevent the urge to try and fly again. (He really misses his wings dearly, but wouldn’t be caught dead admitting it.) The war paint you see on him there glows only because his lack of wings, which used to glow bright enough to keep him visible, puts him at risk of being crushed in populated areas. He met Ammy by a stupid choice to explore at night and almost became her snack; he stuck with her only because he hurt himself fighting out of her jaws and couldn’t do much to help himself. Nowadays, he’s part of her vigilante scheme to buy hunted monsters off of poachers, feed them and free them again. Though, sometimes he does part ways with her to chase after a foolish idea that usually lands him in deep water of some kind that Ammy has to bust him out of.

And thusly, we segway to the wolf herself, Amaterasu! Ammy is an Amarok, an Inuit wolf who hunts alone at night and consumes any man foolish enough to stay out late in the wild. This said, while she shouldn’t have any ties to the celestial bodies, there are rumours that days are longer when she is content with her life. (There was a very long night when she and Sköll came together, as a matter of fact… Followed by an eclipse.) She has almost no divinity apart from a few gifts given to her from a dryad (cough cough Sakuya) on one of her old adventures. Her markings are actually war paint, originally designed by Isshaku and later revised by Issun! Underneath that red paint she is a pure white wolf. If she hadn’t recognized Isshaku’s scent on Issun, she might’ve still eaten him, actually! It was only his relation to her former companion that kept him alive, and he grew onto her fast. Few can actually understand her, as she doesn’t really speak the native tongue of many mortals, but Issun can understand her perfectly and is able to translate for anyone who needs the help.

The two actually met Waka because Issun committed petty crime in the elf kingdom, and Waka is a jailor for said kingdom; when Ammy came looking for her accomplice, she was challenged to either battle him or pay bail. She did both. And then Issun proceeded to commit felonies several more times. Whether this was to see Waka or just because he’s dumb is entirely unclear.

Lastly, we have Chibi, an actual ray of sunshine! While he’s the son of an Amarok and the sun-chasing warg, he couldn’t behave more friendly and puppylike, not even willing to harm someone at night and taking to guiding them home instead. His paint was also done by Issun, who cannot figure out who his father is despite the golden-brown fringes, shorter fur, and sharper teeth of the pup. As far as he cares, every single person is a friend who needs protecting - and while he isn’t violent often, he will throw down if any friends or family get hurt. He gets money for Ammy’s monster refugee scheme by sitting somewhere with a sign that says “5 cent to pet, 10 cent for kiss” for hours at a time (he doesn’t mind; he LOVES the attention).

Huh! An Idea!

Hey I just heard about a very cool-seeming anime called (I think?) Rehibilitaion Of An MMO Junkie! It seems really nice cos its one of those stories about hikkomori (I think thats the japanese word for it?)- depressed people who stay at home all day and are socially anxious about going out in public. LOL RELATEABLE, AMIRITE? no but seriously beyond just Jokes, this is a very sad modern manifestation of a timeless mental illness, and i know these feelings well and i wish people could have less stigma about this and instead just give these people the help they need. And that’s why i love this anime concept, cos its a sympathetic take on one of these people as a protagonist, and how videogames as escapism can be A Good Thing and how long distance relationships Are Also Good. Like wtf, subverting all the cliches at once?? Its a really cute looking romance story of her meeting a guy online via vidjagaems, and their love being absolutely real and pure, and it rekindling her will to live and helping her find the courage to take more risks in real life and start the road to recovery. And then they work thru all their various issues as a couple and meet up in real life and have a happily ever after! :D

Now okay, that sounds really cool and I ABSOLUTELY want to watch this show and I will make more posts about it when I do! But also it gave me a bit of a story idea so i’m gonna ramble!!!!!

Okay so kind of a wasted potential thing here is how it has a plot about the two halves of the couple playing as the opposite gender online and like.. nothing is done with it? Nothing really creative or relevant to like.. gender. It just seems like a weird way they could invoke LGBT imagery but technically not be LGBT I guess? Like neither character is trans or has any deep reason for playing that character except ‘my fave colour is pink and people would make fun of me if they knew i was a dude’ and ‘i wanna play a hot guy cos i was kinda lonely and drunk when i saw this MMO’. But then a lot of stuff about it kinda feels like the writers were.. not predjudiced against LGBT or anything?? like the lady protag has NO angst about getting a crush on a seemingly female player, it seems perfectly acceptable in-universe and nobody even mentions homophobia. And there’s a pair of characters that for all extents and purposes looks like a gay couple for half of the game its just like a footnote that one of them is female in real life. So like I don’t know if this was someone being overly careful to censor stuff while still hinting at it, or like if it was never intended to look LGBT and it was all a weird accident?? But anyway thats why it made me go WTF THERE WOULD BE SO MUCH POTENTIAL IN AN LGBT MMO ROMANCE and hey here we go!

THE IDEA TIME what if there was an anime about someone who plays a (presumed) cis dude in an mmo who is actually a trans dude irl? so you could have the same plots about keeping a secret and having a big difference between real and internet personas, but also it could be a wish fullfillment persona and the plot could be less about ‘i’m lying about myself’ and more about ‘the only place i can be the real me is online’. And how sad that is and then how triumphant it could be at the end to be able to be himself in the real world too! and also like... its already coincidental enough that two people would fall in love in an mmo and then end up to be living in the same neighbourhood in real life. so if this anime has me have to believe that silliness, its not too silly to say that two trans people could bump into each other in an mmo! have a trans man and a trans woman who meet as their online personas without knowing either of them is trans, and then their adventures online forming their relationship, learning about each othr, and like meeting a bunch of other LGBT players and forming a guild to fight discrimination in the mmo community?

Also it could be interesting to maybe combine this with the ‘trapped in an mmo world’ genre? Like it’d be extra cool to be a trans dude who’s like.. one of the only people who doesnt want to escape the MMO world. And people could think he’s just a childish jerk who’s addicted to the fantasy life, not knowing about his secret reason he loves this new life. So maybe his personality could be a very ordinary and cute looking dude whose personality is like.. absolutely fearless monster battle man! Like everyone else’s mmo avatars are all super idealized cliche buff and hot people and his is just as close as he could get to his real self but post transition. So he’s five foot tall and chubby and has big ol soulful dragon ball Z krillin eyes and then his job class is something unfitting like gladiator or barbarian with an axe twice his body size! And then in retrospect that’s the most cliche masculine class so maybe the female lead could be a not cliche feminine class, so it doesnt seem like I’m making any statement? cos ‘youre not trans if you dont act stereotypically your gender’ is a real issue within the community, sadly. Oh! Maybe! Maybe theyre both buff classes! But like he could be a tank type that protects his allies and she’s just a regular warrior with no extra functionality. Or another DPS class like thief or black mage? But I like the idea of two very shy and adorable people who both prefer buffness, and then having kind of a badass hero role amoungst their guild and the plot itself. Like, winning the actual battles against bosses is less of a challenge than conquering their various real life worries and being emotionally ready to return home at the end of the journey. Its like a slice of life hiding as an action show! Except you still do see action, its just all comparatively effortless like one punch man. Oh and maybe while male lead made his avatar look just like himself but post transition, female lead’s avatar is kind of an exaggerated ideal stereotypical female thing? Because she’s self concious about being very tall and not very curvy and stuff, even post transition. And like she’s angsting about being forced into further cosmetic plastic surgery that she doesn’t really want, to get a body that she doesn’t really want, but feels like she HAS to have. Like maybe she has some sort of friend in real life who’s like a Fedora Wearing Fake Nice Guy who keeps trying to get her to give in and date him like ‘you’ll never get anyone else’, and trying to make her change herself. Negging champion of utter hateability!

And then female lead could be kind of a mentor role to male lead because she’s post transition, and motivates him to believe that someday he’ll be able to transition too and he doesn’t need to stay trapped forever in a fake world in order to be himself. And he could also be the same mentor role to her because he’s like... happy? Well, obviously he isn’t 100% happy because that’s his whole problem, but he doesn’t have the same social anxiety issues and he’s more confident in his anxiety without worrying that he’s wrong and he really is a girl, etc etc. Like he’s at peace with being trans and his obstacle is just feeling like he’ll never pass successfully without surgery, and never be able to get that surgery. It took him ages to even get on HRT, possibly because of something like being trapped in an abusive family that didnt aknowledge his gender? or possibly just because of being in a country where he’d need a lot of money to get the treatment he needs, or because of struggling to find a good doctor? So anyway now he’s just started HRT and he expected everything to be okay now, but he’s getting frustrated how long it’s taking to have the amount of visual change he needs to be respected by his coworkers and stuff, and now he’s had some sort of other money emergency and he may not be able to get top surgery in the end. So at the time of starting this MMO he was really un-optimistic about his future and looking for an escape. And she was looking for a similar escape because she didnt have any support group while transitioning, and had got trapped into an abusive relationship with this other dude that was making her feel like a fake woman who’d never be loved by anyone except him. So she was considering giving in and falling into his trap, and that’s her reason to be terrified of going back to the real world... And so they both are all OH MY GOD YOURE SO AMAZING I’M SO TRASH about each other, and they help teach each other two different aspects of self love that they were missing, and they make a bunch of other friends in the LGBT community, and generally find the love and support they always needed! And then in the end they could go back to the real world and move in together and slap negging man in the face, and keep in touch with all the other guildmates and create a better community for all queer folks playing this game! Woo!
