in IOU, does jisung have any romantic feelings for the OC? his reaction keeps me wondering, but of course it could all be very platonic as well.

so for me, he doesn’t. it’s alluded to just in the scope of how difficult it can be to navigate friendships with the opposite sex (and to add a little more tension on top of everything you know me) but it can be up to reader interpretation as well. i went back and forth about that but ultimately decided that it was messy enough without the love triangle and i just couldn’t bring myself to break the bff’s heart like that. so for me, they never had real romantic feelings for each other. you could argue attraction for sure, esp with how i wrote the earlier chapters, but it was always meant to be just friendship

his reaction is so strong because he feels like the one thing he thought his older brother couldn’t take from him was, in his eyes, taken. he went to extremes to distance himself from minho: moving to another country for school, vetting potential friends to make sure they had not interest in k-pop, etc… now he feels like it was all for nothing… that he has nothing that’s well and truly his (aside from his degree, but even that his brother is helping pay for). it’s not really fair of jisung to view it so black and white— or for him to be possessive of reader because she isn’t an object but when it comes to minho, his emotions tend to cloud his judgement.

I guess in regards to Liam's attraction to others though since it would be that he would only feel anything after a strong enough bond, getting to see that in action would be more when he's either, well for one, the main character. So I guess Mech Pilot!Liam would be more blatant about it, or just whenever another pairing is explored.

Like i think Zacharie or Ethan are pretty viable love interests for him where it might be more obvious that he wouldnt really have had much attraction to them yet but it could happen, while Alex is one where I think... if he liked Alex he might not know and ignored it? Like him and Alex are already really close so i don't know if he'd really think much of it esp when liking guys is a foreign concept to him and also so is having friends so what the hell does he know about any of this

Clover is a romantic comedy arranged marriage story where the two of them learn to like eachother and Liam is able see how cute Clover is after a lot of time with her but its kind of hard to work with this when Clover keeps ragging on him constantly. I think Liam has to die so Clover realizes she had come to like him. but its still a comedy so he's not dead and clover delightfully goes back to the status quo

SnowBaird vs AlysxAemond

Romantic feelings are also not defined by the moral soundness of one or more characters nor the longevity of the relationship of one or more characters but by the existence of the desire for a kind of intimacy, attraction, and some form of excitement from contact of any kind.

So yes, Snow loved LG; love doesn't have to be pure to be love--it's weird to suppose that every sociopath or psychopath or whatever is incapable of love when we see evidence to the contrary.

To argue that Snow didn't love LG in some way (even if it wasn't the sort of love that would sustain them or was pure) is to undermine the train of this entire story: how does Snow falling in love vs wanting power over as many people--esp District--as possible contextualize his eventual decision to devote himself utterly to the pursuit of total power & control? What was that journey?

So what do I like abt SnowBaird in the original story, even with Snow being what he is?

The emotional ache from it being a doomed love, a doomed relationship bc:

of the two's oppositional values, desires, etc coupled w/their simultaneous desire for each other due to Snow's self-deception, hatred, unrelenting performance of affability or care, and his constant excuses

Snow was never going to let go of having political power and status and it shows in him being inside Nature w/Lucy Gray, i.e., total freedom and Nature out of oppressive human grip

LG unknowingly was in the middle of giving some of her trust to him, but Snow looked at her performance-to-survive as her playing the exact same murderous, duplicitous games as him bc he can't and will not contemplate anything else (Alright, I'm bad but you're nor prize either)

It's the dramatic irony of it all.

Similarities

Even though we don't have access to Aemond's thoughts as we do Snow and Aemond definitely are not poor pretending to be still rich, the two men-boys share a trope of sociopathic male youth falling in love with someone of a marginalized class (lower-classed/bastards vs nomad/low-classed/District).

Alys and LG have similar plights of needing to put on some sort of performance to survive & both need to use a man who has more privilege than them. The men are/have both used their female lovers in some self-interested way: Aemond-Alys through her visions ("she sees much and more, my alys."); Snow-Lucy Gray through her singing in the Games and giving public attention to Snow. Both men are very possessive of their lovers.

Snow especially loves LG for being a person so utterly unlike what he's learned to expect from both Capitol & District people.

He also developed the feeling of her being "his", and partially saw her as a sort of an exotic project meant to reflect back on himself. She first was the prime tool for his own rise through the Games, became a sort of obsession, and finally, she was an inconvenience & a perceived, real threat to that political advancement. Snow saw LG as this blank-slate being (who has no lineage like him) he could mold into what he wanted until she became a "problem" getting what he wanted, also after he lost the game he had just won with her win. Aemond also probably loved Alys for how much use he got of her plus how her being his war prize signaled his military prowess--he "won" her and she proved to be unlike what he thought about bastards and pretty much anyone else he ever encountered or thought was possible.

Lucy Gray and Alys, while not pick-mes nor NLOGs, are still marvels in of themselves not just to Snow or Aemond but to others, and only marvels can attract men like these. Not because these men are paragons of human beings and like attracts like but because being treated as paragons or impressive partially because they both have admired skills/behaviors for the society they each live in (Snow, genteelness & charm; Aemond, the sword, and ferocity) AND they thus see themselves as paragons/inevitable paragons and will accept nothing less of themselves. Others thus bore them or disgust them if they aren't family.

Both women are not totally a part of the main known group (Alys the Strongs and LG both the District & Capitol) and are outcasts. Both are smart & reportedly beautiful with their own singular talents. Both attracted their lovers (and the readers/audience) through a kind of mysteriousness, the different perspectives they bring, and their ability to both survive much of anything and stand out as individuals. Both women are also very strong mentally, but wouldn't be classed as warriors per se. They fit this sort of Disney!Esmeralda trope, except less romanticized--that trope is very much male gazey.

Both men appear to explain away their attraction to their female lovers by thinking she's fundamentally "different", whether from bastards or district. Bastards are seen as inherently untrustworthy, lesser people bc they came from illicit passion rather than the conscientious "duty" of marriage, so they're presented as natural threats to the hierarchical system; he describes district people are literally described as bloodthirsty, reckless animals that need to be controlled for the Capitol citizens to survive and despite going to 12 and seeing for himself how untrue this is, even doubling down about them fighting in the dark (#5 below)

Snow & Aemond have literal or symbolic maternal figures who instill their prejudiced beliefs or obsessions with power-seeking and self-preservation or supremacy: Alicent vs. the Grandma'am and Dr. Gaul.

Snow excuses LG through her aura, talent, beauty, and twisting her claim of not being District to liken her to Capitol people/himself both to the HG audience (still using the idea that Capitol > District as basis to say she is > District) but when he goes to 12 and sees she has community, admiration from District folk, a refusal to victimize herself unnecessarily AS WELL AS the mockingjays and how the Covey/she's more akin to them...he wants to get rid of her, the districts, and the birds. In light of that, Aemond allows himself to be involved w/Alys tells us that he saw Alys, too, as a sort of "exception" to the rule.

Both women (seem) to manage to escape from them anyway, as one theory of the end of SnowBaird is that Lucy at least understood that Snow was going to kill her either once she saw the guns & looked at the funny, or b/t then and the moment Snow started calling out for her.

Aemond, to me, reads as "loving" Alys as his unique companion meant to provide him invaluable insight into his political and military agenda, as well as personal comfort/a closer experience to the love missing from his family. Snow loved LG the way he ever could for a nonfamily member: obsessively and possessively and idealizing.

Even family members don't receive the kind of redemptive, pure, healthy true "love" from Snow, as he thinks about beating his own grandmother, says Tigris was too ugly to be a prostitute, and later feels more as if she did it would reflect bad on the Snow's name/lineage, and reputation/his own.

Differences

Aemond, unlike Snow, was never in any danger of losing sustenance nor experienced great hardships like poverty or extreme hunger either before or during the war. He never turned on Alys, but he never actually got the opportunity to. His lover is much older & became pregnant and we definitely know she survives him bc she uses what seems to be his bastard son to protect herself & those living at Harrenhal from the crown's soldiers before going "missing".

LG had a family or very close companions before Snow ever came along while Alys had no reported close companions or family she could have had aside from the very group of people she was not really a part of. And of course, she's a much older woman. LG isn't dumb or socially inept or unobservant, she would have seen people sell themselves to Peacekeepers, her parents were killed by Capitol, & she knows that if she were too specific in her music she'd been suppressed and endangering herself. For her, trust is more important than love; for Snow, control is more important. However, she develops real feelings for Snow, not knowing how he truly thinks until nearly the last minute, and that comes from her seeing how he makes the effort to get to know her family, how they live, hanging out with them AND later she expresses that she needs to trust someone when she is about to try to something daring or vital for her survival. Snow had already seemed to show her an avenue to survival amidst great danger.

Aemond, on the other hand, puts Alys in danger right away and she is there for it--he is the one who kills all the Strong males in front of the entire castle populace in a burst of anger. So it's like he's Snow, but showed his hand from the beginning.

Snow will never really know if Lucy Gray genuinely loved him bc he lies constantly to justify his own actions and to justify killing her and never gets a good read of her; Aemond will die thinking Alys loved him.

For all we don't know about the greens' dynamics b/c a lack of detail, Aemond reveals his own obsession with proving his military prowess, masculinity, insecurities, and prejudices: his hatred of the Velaryon boys and seeing them as "stealing" his birthright/symbol of supremacy, the iron throne itself, how he would have felt that their claim made him seem a less worthy human being and the resentment that would have developed from that; his focus on how Rhaenyra was "just a woman" and obsession with her genitals, motherhood, & sexual activity; his saying that he'd be a much better king than Aegon, his own elder brother ever could; his deciding to not help out either his mother and sister in KL when he hears of Daemon-Rhaenyra capturing it NOR Daeron-the Hightower army in the south when Criston Cole advised they go help Daeron out to retake the capital bc he thought this was a "cowardly" move (even though later he hides from Daemon and Nettles with Alys).

The Experiences for Me and some SnowBaird Shippers

Already described all the above my attraction to SnowBaird is about the dramatic irony.

The not-so-great-but-enough difference b/t Snow and Aemond that makes it easier to ship SnowBaird and not Alysmond--besides the first's thoughts being available & genuinely funny even when hypocritical or cruel--is that:

LG is not a literal sex slave to Coriolanus -- dubious consent (as some wrongly may identify this pairing or story) = sexual slavery; LG very obviously wanted to be in a relationship w/Coriolanus before she might have realized he was trying to kill her in the last chapter, and it is obvious when he comes back and she enthusiastically walks over to him before Billy Taupe confronts her and the Covey PLUs enthusiastically hangs out with him and tells her about her life

while it's easier to tolerate Snow over Aemond bc we can see the vulnerable moments from Snow, whenever we do hear of Aemond's thoughts, it's usually the most sexist shit there is; Snow's thoughts are tinged patriarchal & never attribute violence on women as a grand rule of thumb

Young!Snow has not killed anyone (until Sejanus), and the reveal of his mind after killing/causing Sejanus' death is a fascinating study of crazy

I don't think I can get myself to rah!-rah! for Alysmond (ship name) as I get "excited" thinking about SnowBaird even if we got a lookie-loo into Aemond's mind, bc again, above. The excitement mainly comes from the interplay of my own dread AND I like "the play of predator & prey, how the positions change & switch, how we travel along to see how exactly Snow self-destructed & how LG escaped him"(from my tweet linked below).

I find Coriolanus Snow a great character, and his relationship with Lucy Gray--though not morally positive--enjoyable for the extant passion (quotes given below) and the element of them relying on each other to escape some sort of material deprivation. I'm also disgusted with both male characters while I root for their lovers to separate themselves from them. Writing on the wall, and all.

There are too many of Snow's ridiculous paranoid and hypocritical thoughts cataloging the realization of his inevitable final tyrannical form he creeped towards since the first chapter. That doesn't mean that the relationship & his thoughts weren't fun to read. For all it's worth, it is intriguing to see a sociopath's mind in a romance context. It is fun to see what love looks like in such a taboo mind space is like--an anti-community/anti-real love/romance is like from a safe space.

And again, all forms of love don't equal the sort of pure, sustainable love that is actually a substance of several things in a mesh (respect, admiration, sexual attraction [for some people]; memories; challenges to ideas; opportunity; proximity; unique conditions of sense of commonality vs difference; feelings of reliability and reciprocity; trust; etc.) If there are romantic feelings, it is a "romance". The romantic feeling is both a part of and critical to the most heartening AND lasting partnerships and marriages.

And so again, Snow is not capable of the "right" kind of love or the love that some people want out of real love for themselves or what they perceive in a ship. He constantly chooses to not regard District people as deserving of basic rights or necessities at the expense of his power, but he does have romantic obsessive feelings and the capacity to be attracted romantically to a being. Therefore, yes, he had a romance with LG and loved her...in his own way and the way he could.

So with bk!Aemond's romantic feelings for Alys and Alys are more likely NOT truly reciprocating similarly (unless she also is pretty ruthlessly sociopathic), technically it is a romance...on his side. Subjectively. A thriller on Alys' side.

The sexual slavery element really just ruins what could have been an enjoyable ship for me, but after all the posts I made about AlysxAemond, the dislike for this ship was exacerbated by AlysxAemond shippers who said Rhaelya or Daemyra were the worst, or the "real" evil ships. The anti-Rhaenyra and anti-Dameon-ness as separate individuals also are hypocritical due to Aemond being comparably worse for the Strong genocide & Riverland erasure alone. No, Rhaelya doesn't have this context, either, since she got together with Rhaegar BEFORE the war or any major battle.

Still, I don't really care all that much anymore that people ship Alysmond bc people are going to ship anything; it's so much so when they try to claim it is a morally superior ship to most available or conceivable.

I have some random questions about Bats and Blue:

Is she on birth control? Is that why they are both okay not using any other protective/contraceptive method?

Is this his first real intimate/sexual relationship? He seems pretty experienced physically speaking. And it seems like there has been a seed of interest for each other, since they have know each other for so long, but has he been with anyone else?

Why now? I get she is down to fuck The Batman but why does Bruce suddenly feel okay opening up to her? Was their first experience the catalyst for him to allow himself to want her openly when he is Bruce?

What did they think about each other before they fucked. She mentioned she thought about The Batman and was attracted to him. What were their initial thoughts when they met for the first time (with him in disguise)?

I dont know, I dont think Bruce 2022 has had any long lasting relationships but I don’t think he’s a virgin yknow. im guessing he probably messed around a little bit in his later teens or early 20s. and like, he’s intuitive and blue tells him what she likes. you don’t necessarily need to be experienced to be a good lover imo

like I said in the third chapter, bruce and blue know each other! like they’re childhood friends and bruce has technically and already feels comfortable and has opened up to her before. the only thing is that she left for university and they sort of drifted until the third chapter takes place, where they reunite because of alfred’s scheme lmfao. bruce and blue have always had feelings for each other but they are both wickedly shy people so nothing was ever said. and bruce is still trying to manage how to be batman and such so his decision making is like questionable at best when it comes to real life, yknow? he’s a recluse and does not know how to deal with people well, esp with romantic interests. 

well I mean, batman is sexy lmfaOOO and blue thinks so too. tbh he did scare her initially but she trusts Gordon and she then (obviously) made her own opinion about batman through working with him. like blue is a very kind and caring person and it’s easy to tell that batman is um Unwell, so she developed a sense of worry and sympathy for him. bats, since he is bruce, was fuckin spooked when Gordon introduced him to blue. Bats didn’t know blue was back in town or working for GCPD and so he wanted to keep his distance out of fear of discovery or keeping her out of trouble essentially. however, he is stupid and feelings make people even dumber so he wasn't very successful in pushing her away. and then in the first chapter, even though it was a life or death situation, he was literally willing to die instead of forcing or like asking blue to help him

yeah I agree. blue likes bruce and bats for different reasons but she does have that familiarity with them since they're the same person. like one is a forbidden love and the other is a childhood love. and yeah bruce is definitely braver with the mask and does feel more himself, which I hope I accurately portrayed. bruce is shy and like, idk it’s scary to open yourself up if you dont have a mask to create a sort of barrier. 

and well, it is a reader insert technically, so the appearance is up to the reader. but I do have my own input as to what she would look like. she goes by she/her pronouns and identifies as female, but again I dont really use a lot of pronouns in the fic so it can be up for interpretation. as for looks I was thinking of a blend of the two ladies in the photos below! Blue’s family is Arab and hence the appearance    

again bruce and blue have known each other for AGES. like it’s more of their chemistry and personality plus just overall familiarity/comfort he has with her and vice versa. obviously he’s physically attracted to her looks but it’s more of what’s below the surface. plus, just in general, bruce is not a superficial man and isn’t shallow when looking for partners. in fact I'd say he’s more of a personality over physical feature guy. and so is blue!

Not Hobi lowkey sweatin when yn said remember?? He was like 😳 I’ve been caught 😂😅. This is not gonna end well that’s for sure (and by this I mean the whole secret identity thing).

Yn wasn’t even thinking about him huh…so who was she thinking of 👀👀👀 maybe the last guy who’s lap she sat on??? (I’m assuming not a lot of people her lap dances during the day shift??). HE NEEDS TO LISTEN TO YOONGI! Never thought I’d say that but yeah…yoongi be on to something there 👀. ma’am the post u made about kagome taking over inu’s mind is a bit biased. although InuKag are obvious and endgame, the initial stages - esp where inu was avoiding her glance, were truly because of the remaining wounds / live he had for kikyou. which is that we saw in the next part of her resurrection. I think it’s nice to find inukag moments but I feel you’re trying to erase kikyou from the references and that’s not really an honest interpretation.

Well... of course that post is biased! I don't remember ever selling myself as neutral. In fact, I don't think neutrality is something possible to achieve because it's human nature to be partial and anyone who says otherwise is lying to you.

I'm not trying to erase Kikyo from the references, even because I have no such power — no one does. It just turns out I'm mostly focused on Inuyasha and Kagome's relationship, to which in my opinion Kikyo plays no part besides being a point of conflict.

I firmly believe that Kagome didn't met Inuyasha because her soul belonged to Kikyo once upon a time, but rather that Kikyo met Inuyasha because her soul would one day be Kagome's.

The way I see it, Inuyasha was attracted to and fell in love with Kagome not because she is Kikyo's reincarnation, but because she is Kagome. And by the time he tried to kiss her, I just don't see how he would still see Kikyo in her when he had more than enough time to realize they could not be more different.

He would have loved Kagome even if she had nothing to do with Kikyo because the similarities they shared are not what piqued his interest. I'd even argue that the physical resemblance slowed the romantic process down, considering that the staged betrayal made Inuyasha build his walls even taller than they were when he met Kikyo — which makes Kagome managing to get his trust so quickly that much greater.

He fell for Kagome because she gave him true acceptance. She trusted him and made sure that he knew he could trust her in return. She gifted him with companionship, friendship and comfort without ulterior motives. She cried for him when no one else did. I really don't know what from any of these screams "Kikyo" to him.

I'm not denying she had a huge impact in his life, because how could she not? And I'm not denying he was still confused and wounded about what happened to her because that was quite obvious. But by the time he tries to kiss Kagome, he does so because of all the "Kagome" things she has been doing since they met, none of which reminded Kikyo's personality except archery. All there's left is the physical similarity and I don't take Inuyasha as that shallow of a character.

I also don't think Inuyasha and Kikyo ever truly loved one another, so that's probably the keypoint of our disagreement. To me, they were infatuated and more in love with the idealization they created of each other and the life they could have together than with their actual, real versions. And this definitely affects the way I perceive scenes like Inuyasha trying to kiss Kagome.

Especially because... as far as we know, Inuyasha never tried to kiss Kikyo in the manga. Canonically, their very first kiss was the one Kikyo layed on him in an attempt to drag him to hell. Their second and last one was the goodbye kiss.

So why has he never tried to kiss Kikyo before, but was going in for the kill with Kagome? And if he had tried to kiss Kikyo when they were in a relationship, why didn't she let him? Why hasn't he tried to kiss her all of those times they saw each other between the first kiss and the goodbye one?

Why has he never covered Kikyo with his Fire Rat Robe? Why has he never trusted Kikyo? Why has Kikyo never rode on his back? Why were they always so far away apart when together? Why has he never rested his head on her lap? Why did she never learn about his New Moon secret? Why did he rarely acted like a dog demon when she was around?

It's your God given right to think I'm wrong, but I do have my reasons to interpret things the way I do, the same way I'm sure you have your reasons to interpret things the way you do. Art is subjective and I think it's fair to say both points of view are valid.

I, myself, have read a considerable share of takes I found dihonest, such as "Inuyasha loved Kikyo more" and "Inuyasha settled for Kagome" and "Kagome is an annoying, abusive bitch." The difference is that I simply blocked those people so I wouldn't have to be exposed to their content.

Instead of coming to their inbox pointing out the supposed dishonesty of their interpretation, I just recognized that people are entitled to their own opinions and they're not always gonna align with mine. So I express my interpretations on my own blog, in the hopes that people who agree with me will appreciate it and people who don't will blissfully ignore it.

That's my advice for you, anon. If you feel like I'm trying to erase Kikyo from the references and that my interpretation is not really honest... maybe block me or the #Sid Reads Inuyasha tag and start creating your own content, vocalizing on your own space the interpretation you judge to be unbiased and honest. I do think it’s a possibility, yes! I wouldn't call it a full-on crush or anything, but I do think he's at least a little attracted to her.

I don't love the anime's tweaks to chapter 12 in ep 7, and especially not them putting extra emphasis on Noé and Jeanne (since ch 12 thrives on a very careful balance of subtext imo), but there is evidence in the manga for some one-sided NoéJeanne attraction.

Starting in chapter 3, when we get Jeanne's big reveal spread, Noé looks just as struck by Jeanne's appearance as Vanitas does, and we know for certain that Vanitas finds her quite beautiful.

In fact, given there's that little extra slim panel of Noé looking surprised before he reacts to her appearance, you could even argue that more emphasis is put on Noé seeing Jeanne than on Vanitas seeing her. So if we know Vanitas seeing her here is a big deal, and Noé gets even more emphasis, then this moment is probably important. And the important thing happening is that Noé is quite struck by the way she looks.

Continuing on, when Noé and Jeanne fight in chapter 4, Noé holds his own pretty well at first. Then Jeanne looks at him and he freezes up, allowing her to kick him through a wall.

Given that there's a heartbeat sound effect and a blush on his reaction panel, it's pretty clear that seeing her face here once again has an effect on him. He even reacts like this after recovering from the blow:

which is more or less how I'd expect Mr. "what on earth is love" to react to being attracted to a woman for the first time in his life.

There's a couple other similar moments in the bal masqué arc (his reactions to hearing Jeanne is at the ball and having her thank him the day after), but I'll save the in-depth analysis of those. For every moment after Vanitas kisses Jeanne, you could argue that at least some of Noé's interest in her is connected to his trying to make sense of her "romance" with Vanitas, but in chapters 3 and 4, I really can't think of any explanation for how Noé acts other than "he thinks she's really pretty and doesn't know what to make of it."

You could read that as romantic attraction, or maybe just very strong aesthetic attraction (esp if you're a fan of aro-spec Noé like me), but either way, he sure does seem to be attracted to her in some form.

Furthermore, when future Noé starts narrating about the "feeling stirring in his heart" that he's yet to understand in chapter 12, it's immediately preceded by him looking over at Jeanne, and shown over the image of him stepping on Vanitas's foot.

The images shown with narration like this are pretty important for implying future meaning, and there's definitely a way that you can read these pages as implying a future crush on Jeanne. After all, Noé turning to look at Jeanne right before the narration about his feelings does sort of make it feel like it's his seeing her that prompts romantic thoughts. Her face is also shown larger than Domi's or Luca's, making it seem like Mochijun wants to draw extra attention to her importance here as Noé talks about love. Or, we could argue that he's just looking at Jeanne because he's baffled by Vanitas's explanation of his feelings for her, and thus naturally staring as he tries to puzzle it out. He feels things about Vanitas and Jeanne's relationship, and he's drawn to talking about it and watching the both of them as a result, but it could well be that Vanitas is the one he's really jealous about.

Similarly, if we set aside Noé looking at Jeanne and say the image actually under the narration is what's important, we run into a similar split. If the foot stepping means something, it could be foreshadowing about Noé someday stepping on Vanitas's toes in a less literal way via some kind of relationship with Jeanne. I don't know whether the "stepping on someone's toes" metaphor is something relevant at all in Japan, or if it's exclusively an english phrase, but it's at least possible that it's what Mochijun is referencing here. Or, it's possible that the foot step itself isn't the significant part, but that it is important to have Vanitas and Noé interact under the narration. After all, even if it's a silly interaction, it does draw attention to the two of them while Noé talks about his future love, so maybe it's Vanoé foreshadowing, not Noéjeanne.

In other words, the end of chapter 12 could be a setup for Noé's future crush on Vanitas, or his future crush on Jeanne. It could maybe even be both. That's how I've always read not only this scene, but the whole chapter. We just don't know which of them he's jealous of.

However, it also seems worth noting that chapter 12 is pretty much the last time we get any indication of this semi-crush Noé has. After that point, Mochijun almost never has them interact, with only two notable scenes between them in 40+ chapters. And within those scenes, the only even slight hint of attraction on Noé's part is a single panel of him blushing when Jeanne literally twists her leg around his neck and shoves her thigh into his face:

which I'm not inclined to read into all that much.

I think literally anyone even a little bit attracted to women would be blushing in that moment. It's quite possible even people who aren't attracted to women would be blushing in that moment. So it's not exactly compelling evidence for a future NoéJeanne plot.

Overall, I think it's fair to say that, while Noé hasn't interacted enough yet with Jeanne to "love" her in a notable way, he does seem to be at least a bit attracted to her. I have a lot of thoughts on what Mochijun could be doing with this thread, and where I think the whole Vanitas/Jeanne/Noé romantic mess is going to go in the future, but given this post's word count, I think I'll be saving that ramble for another day.

England 💚

How I feel about this character. I have a strong and perpetual urge to hug him, despite the fact that he'd probably smell like an old man. England has been my muse for a LONG time, well before I started writing, for reasons I've never fully understood.

All the people I ship romantically with this character. Y'all know my OTP is FrUK, but I'm a multi-shipper and a historical-context shipper. If England was close to any other nation/kingdom throughout history, then I will ship him with that character, lol. Also I tend to view the relations between Hetalia characters as entirely different compared to humans, so while I know it's not everyone's cup 'o tea, I do ship like... post-WW2 USUK. But anyway, here's the list: Portugal, Spain, France, Prussia, Belgium, America, Russia, Germany, Japan, and there's probably more that I'm forgetting.

My non-romantic OTP for this character. BROTP is England and Wales. "The grumpy brother is soft for the sunshine brother." That's it, that's them.

My unpopular opinion about this character. Hmm... I suppose I'd say that I don't think he is "conventionally attractive". That is, if he were cast in a live-action movie, I'd pick someone who looks quite plain to play him. Not saying that "plain" is bad, because honestly, most people are plain. Hell, I'm plain! But from a story-telling perspective, it's more interesting to have him look very average and unexceptional. And for his character, I think that'd be an asset. Does that make sense?

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. Honestly, I got my wish when Hima finally introduced the UK bros. So for now, I'm happy.

How I feel about this character. Cute, cute, cute. I want her to wake me up with a soft pat on my head and make me homemade waffles for breakfast.

My non-romantic OTP for this character. Benelux, best and most wholesome family dynamic post-WW2. (That's just my HC though, I definitely need to do more research on their modern history, but with my limited knowledge, they seem quite chill.)

My unpopular opinion about this character. Are there unpopular opinions about her? I can't think of any, so I'll just give you a few headcanons... She's a great cook, not afraid to roll up her sleeves and get her hands dirty (literally), optimistic even in dark times, good at making friends, easily startled (esp. during Halloween), if she trips she makes a funny squeak when landing like "Puumf!" or "Nguff!", not afraid to politely speak her mind, and likes dancing.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. How about more appearances in general? I feel like Hima forgets that she exists sometimes, along with a number of other characters. Give her a serious scene! I think Belgium is a tough cookie, so I'd like to see more of her working hard to help her people through crisis.

fez- fexi is cute as a concept but I cannot get over the fact that fez was like 25 in s1 before they retconned him and also i don’t care that angus cloud is actually younger than maude apatow, he looks like an old old man beside her and it creeps me out. other than that, relationship w/ ashtray. does ashtray go to school? does fez feel guilty over that? is he afraid he’ll end up like rue? is ashtray okay, like mentally????

lexi- exploring her own identity. maybe give her madd but that’s just me projecting. learning to do things for herself that aren’t the play since tbh the play is still not really for herself lol, it’s very much about other people and trying to get across to them. give her a close friend but no romantic interest (not YET. develop a friendship first, then move it to romantic interest in s3. my girl needs to vibe a little and develop her sense of self a bit more.) give lexi and jules a bonding moment over identity crises/feeling lost when alone.

I'm genuinely curious and don't want to start something! Just wanted to ask what you make of the 'Old Fritz might've been asexual' take, I don't know much about him and I feel you're one of the best people to ask esp since you lean towards 'he was probably queer in some way' too

Hey there! So, first off, don’t ever worry about me interpreting you asking me a question as starting something. As much as I love making dumb jokes about the guy, I love nothing more than doing this kind of stuff and defending or explaining my points. There’s two degrees I want to get over the next decade: first my JD and then my MA in Prussian history. I live for this stuff! Always have! Second off, I’m very sorry for not getting to this sooner. Things have been incredibly stressful for me for a variety of different reasons which have made answering your question, until now, rather difficult. Putting this under a cut because, holy shit, it got long!

My personal reasoning for why I think he’s bi (which, correct me if I’m wrong, I’m assuming is what you meant instead of ace and could be a different post entirely since some historians have tried to argue that) stems more to do with some of my lingering questions about the nature of his relationships with certain woman, rather than that of his relationships with men. To me and my modern, queer eye, Fritz’s relationships with men like Hans Hermann von Katte, Francisco Algarotti, Michael Gabriel Fredersdorf, and (much to my personal vexation) one Monsieur Voltaire are either outright homosexual/homoerotic in nature or very, very easily lend themselves to that interpretation rather than strictly romantic friendships (which Wikipedia does a fairly good overview of and, if you’re coming to me from AmRev perspective, uses Hamilton and Laurens’ relationship as a familiar example). While I’m avoiding those relationships in this ask, I’d be more than happy to elaborate upon one/all of them in a different one. 

Before I go into the big pauses that Fritz’s relationships with Madame von Wreech and Countess Orzelska give me, I want to deny the use of Fritz’s wife as an example of Fritz’s attraction to woman. While this, admittedly, may sound odd, we have ample evidence of how turned off and repulsed Fritz found Elisabeth Christine. Before he had even met her, Fritz was complaining about how she was ‘not very pretty, speaks but little, and acts like a blockhead’ (Asprey, 87) and, later, admitted to Grumbkow his plan to ‘keep my word,...get married, but afterwards it will be a case of that is that, and goodbye, Madame, and fare thee well’ (Jones, 52). For Christ’s sake, the man pitied her knowing how his treatment would leave her as ‘one more unhappy princess in the world’! Which is little consolation when you remember he also referred to her with such romantic terms as ‘this unpleasant creature,’ ‘the abominable object of my desires,’ ‘the person,’ and claimed to have preferred to marry ‘the biggest whore in Berlin’ (Asprey, 87). And while we (fortunately? unfortunately?) know quite a bit about their sex life, Fritz largely regarded it as just another duty - to quote him, ‘I will only have the duty to fuck’ (Ibid, 87). And while Seckendorf heard - first, presumably from Count von der Schulenburg and, later on, Count Friedrich von Wartensleben, a close and intimate friend of the then-crown prince - that Fritz would ‘fuck and refuck’ Elisabeth Christine and that said act occurred in the afternoon, it still was out of a sense of obligation (Bely, 481-2). When reminded that if he wanted more money for frivolities, he’d need to produce an heir, Fritz bemoaned that he ‘cannot sleep with my wife out of desire, and when I do sleep with her, I do it out of duty rather than inclination’ (Clark, 50). All this in accumulation, as well as the myriad of other quotes and incidents I’ve left out, makes one wonder why his relationship with Elisabeth Christine is sometimes used by historians to prove any sort of heterosexual impulse in the man when she’s the woman with the weakest supports for that argument.

That being said, now we get to the women with a more muddled places in his romantic escapades, if you will. What exactly happened between Orzelska and Fritz during his trip with his father to Dresden in 1728? The main source for everything that occurred during this trip is Wilhelmina, who didn’t attend and without anything about this specific incident coming from Fritz or Friedrich Wilhelm I, make it rather hard to use as concrete, irrefutable proof. Now, if her recollections were contemporaneous - like coming from a diary or journal she kept at the time - that would be one thing. But it comes from her memoirs which, while a delightful read 10/10 recommend, are written decades after this trip took place and, memory being a finicky thing, can’t be taken to the bank. All those disclaimers, here’s the story as told by her:

‘One evening...,the King of Poland [note: Augustus II] insensibly led the King of Prussia to a very richly decorated room...The King of Prussia, delighted with what he saw, stopped to contemplate all its beauties, when [all of] a sudden a tapestry was rolled up, which procured him a very novel sight. It was a lovely female in a state of nudity [note: Countess Orzelska, the Polish king’s daughter], carelessly reclined on a couch. Her beauty excelled that of the finest pictures of Venus and the Graces; her body seemed of ivory, whiter than snow, and better shaped than that of the Venus de Medicis at Florence.

...Scarcely had the King cast his eyes on the fair one, than he turned about with indignation; and seeing my brother behind him, he rudely pushed him out of the room, and left it immediately after in a violent irritation against the trickery they had attempted to practice on him. ...In spite of the King’s vigilance, [Frederick] had had time to contemplate the Venus of the closet, who did not cause him so much horror as she had done to his father. (Wilhelmina’s Memoirs, vol. 1, 107-6)

Wilhelmina then goes on to claim Fritz had fallen ‘passionately in love’ with Orzelska and that the illness Fritz experienced upon returning home was simply being lovesick. Pinning the accuracy of this story is incredibly difficult because, again, we have only one source relayed decades after the fact and from two volumes of memoirs known to have inaccuracies. While I, personally, would love if he had had a tryst with Orzelska (who is such a badass in her own right and deserves more recognition than as a footnote in this guy’s story), there’s no one way to say with more than 30% confidence. I am inclined to believe something along these lines happened because if someone told me a story like this, lord knows I wouldn’t forget it for the rest of my life. And, with Wilhelmina being so close with her brother, it lends a bit more credence but as to the actual emotional or physical response Fritz had to it, well, without my time machine, I can’t and don’t want to say.

With Madame Eleonore-Louise von Wreech, things are a little more concrete. For starters, Fritz actually talked about her! In written correspondence that survived! We even have seven letters between the two of them that survived, which is a bigger win! As Blanning says, they’re ‘ardent but light in tone, ironic, almost flippant, and highly stylized’ (Blanning, 58). Their relationship was known to those close with Fritz at the time that Schulenberg felt compelled to visit and warn the crown prince against devoting himself to women because ‘the slight pleasures gained cause a million displeasures.’  Fritz’s response? To tell the poor guy that he may have ‘the gift of continence, but I assure you that I do not’ (Asprey, 83-4). Firtz even went so far as to send a letter to her mother, waxing poetic about Louise’s ‘beauty, her majestic air, her bearing, and her entire department.’ It’s worth noting that Louise eventually broke off the affair due to being bored by how he ‘loved [her] too much and often annoyed [her] with his clumsy love’ (Ibid, 84). Contemporaries, including Friedrich Wilhelm, believed Fritz had impregnated her with a daughter who her ‘cuckolded husband would refuse to recognize’ (Blanning, 58). Blanning is the only source I’ve seen dispute this due to this news coming from Seckendorf, who didn’t reveal how he came about this information; that Fritz and Madame von Wreech’s correspondence doesn’t indicate a physical relationship; and on the fact that she was not pregnant. I haven’t been able to find the birth dates or any sort of records for Louise’s two daughters to figure out where their conception could’ve been in the timeline and if it matches with the likely dates for the affair, but I also don’t have the resources Cambridge would afford Blanning. Either way, while the physical nature of the affair is in dispute, the emotional aspect certainly was there. Especially when taking into consideration the fact that she’s the woman Fritz was likely referring to in the 16 August 1737 letter to Voltaire where he claimed she had taught him how to love (and also inspired him to write poetry, which we shouldn’t be thankful for). Specifically, all these years later, he stated how ‘this little miracle of nature possessed every possible charm, together with good taste and delicacy. She sought to transfer these qualities to me. I succeeded well in love but poorly in poetry. Since that time I have very often been in love and have always been a poet’ (Fritz’s Oeuvres, vol. 21, 96).

All this to say, there’s a bit too much evidence of some degree of opposite-gender attraction in Fritz to completely write off the possibility that he could’ve been bisexual. While it’s undeniable he held a preference for men and that’s whose company he typically enjoyed, I still do find it interesting the two exceptions (one potential and the other with a fair degree of certainty) to this. And, while I would never want his attraction to men be minimized in favor of that to women, it still remains important to note to get the most comprehensive picture of the man.

hello, i just recently read berserk and i am absolutely blown away. im so glad to have found your blog, you have made a lot of in depth analyses on griffguts and honestly i have a lot of trouble comprehending griffith's and gut's relationship and feelings toward each other post-eclipse but i feel like you clarified a lot of things for me and im so grateful! i also wanna ask smth in regards to guts and casca but character limit soon so ill do it in another ask. just wanna say i appreciate you!

idk if its just me being ridiculously biased but i cant rly see the guts/casca ship? like i can tolerate it because i feel like it was written to move the plot in a certain direction/character development and not for the sake of romance but i always feel like guts was just... there. i mean when you compare the way he thinks abt griffith to casca in the golden age arc, he obviously reveres griffith so much, and casca is just... there. i really enjoyed their moments and thought they were cute but

with the sex scene i always just saw it as them coping. i did like it in how it explored guts's sexual trauma and it mostly seemed like guts and casca were friends doing it for the sake of coping rather than out of love and desire for each other. not to mention judeau who kept trying to push them together... but then post-eclipse, it seems like guts is so in love w/ her and thats why hes heartbroken, and not bc they were close friends and that he just cares for her as a fellow hawk member

idk maybe im missing something, i would love to be enlightened bc i rly scratch my head when i see people describing it as an amazing love story and a romantic ship when to me it comes off as less like trying to portray a passionate love b/w two characters and more as, this is necessary for guts's character development and motivation in regards to griffith. esp when i feel like guts and griffith's feelings for each other are just so intense, even if its more "subtle" than an outright sex scene

well if you want to be enlightened about how Guts and Casca is actually super romantic deep down you've come to the wrong place lol because you've mostly described how I feel about their relationship.

I completely agree that during the Golden Age their relationship felt very much like two friends hooking up. The fact that Judeau had to push them into it seems really telling to me, there are strong indications that they're both rebounding from Griffith, as soon as Griffith re-enters the picture they get weird and jealous, after they have sex Guts calls his sword all there is for him and invites Casca along in as non-committal a way as you can, Guts decides independent of Casca to stay with Griffith instead of leaving with her just as Casca decides the same, I also want to shoehorn in a link to this thing I wrote lol, etc.

And I actually don't see any difference after the Eclipse tbh. I actually wonder which translation you read, because I know at least one of the scanlations out there has Guts talk about how he loves her a few times post-Eclipse while the Dark Horse translation never does.

I think Guts' relationship with Casca after the Eclipse is largely based on obligation. It's actually kind of striking to me how unromantic it is.

Like during the Conviction arc he doesn't stop everything he's doing and decide to save Casca once he realizes she's in danger. He goes to check on her, finds her missing, then sits down in Godo's cave and debates with himself for two chapters before deciding to try to find her. And he only comes to this decision after comparing leaving Casca behind to leaving Griffith behind in the snow, and thinking of her as the last remnant of the Hawks ("this last feeble flame.")

I think to Guts she represents everything he threw away when he left the Hawks, and saving her is essentially a chance to better himself and try to make up for it. I don't think that's Guts' only motivation for saving her and then taking her to Elfhelm, I actually have a post here where I wrote a list of all the reasons I think Guts has if you're interested, but I do think it's the most important one.

And man after he saves her and returns her to Godo's, right before the Hill of Swords?

To me this excellent page - Casca mirroring a child, Griffith looking Like That, Guts' attention torn from Casca because Griffith looks Like That - just screams that Casca is Guts' responsibility while Griffith is Guts' desire. Whether that's revenge or latent attraction or probably both l b r, Griffith is the dude Guts wants to be pursuing and Casca is the person Guts is stuck with.

Even when he sexually assaults her it's all about Griffith lol, it's not even framed as, say, Guts being so attracted to her he can't help it or anything like that, it's framed as "do this and you'll get closer and closer to Griffith."

After learning her mind can be restored he potentially starts thinking about her more romantically, like there's subtext there when he watches Casca with Moonlight Boy on the beach, eg. And even that reads to me as Guts trying to distract himself from his "obsession" with Griffith.

I think Guts wanted to get back together with Casca after getting her sanity back for the same reason he had sex with her the first time - as a distraction from confusing and painful feelings. In the most recent chapters we saw that it didn’t work out and now he’s swinging his sword again, frustrated, wondering what the hell he’s supposed to do now, which in itself shows that he wasn’t trying to selflessly help Casca because he loves her, he mainly just needed something else to focus on while trying to kick his Griffith addiction.

SO yeah, basically ia that their relationship doesn’t seem romantic pre-Eclipse, but I also don’t think there’s much of a romantic element post-Eclipse either. I felt like it was fairly consistent throughout.
