Just a few more historical footnotes under the cut!

George I, father of Queen Sophia Dorothea and maternal grandfather of future Frederick the Great, did indeed write to his daughter to encourage her to get her children vaccinated against smallpox way in the early 18th century. By the time the letter came though, both young Frederick and Wilhelmine had already gone through their bouts of smallpox and were likely already naturally immune.

The Henry they mention is Prince Henry of Prussia, Frederick’s favourite nephew who he often referred to as ‘his child’. Prince Henry was noted to be an intelligent young man and a promising young captain of the guards. He was promoted to the rank of Major General in 1767 by his uncle. Unfortunately in that same year, while travelling to Berlin with his regiment for the annual review, he stopped by at the von Kleist estate where he caught smallpox and died. Frederick was devastated by this loss and it is said that he couldn’t stop crying while writing to the other Prince Henry, his younger brother, to inform him of the loss.

There were many hurdles to vaccination in Prussia, one of which was the cost as physicians tended to charge high fees for vaccine administration. At some point, free clinics were established and were made available to the poorer members of society --- But only if one could provide proof of your financial situation that came in the form of an official certificate; so if you were poor but not poor enough to warrant getting that certificate you were out of luck. This was eventually remedied when medical practitioners were asked to provide vaccinations to anyone free of charge on certain days of the week and the state would pay them for their work. The number of people getting vaccinated instantly improved.

Re-vaccination was initially only mandatory for active duty military personnel, so as to prevent the spread of the disease among the ranks. While cases of children dying from smallpox were dropping significantly, they found that the disease was becoming more prevalent in adolescents and adults because the effects of the first dose eventually wore off. Thanks to a petition that originated from Koenigsberg, it became mandatory for everyone to be re-vaccinated in order to ensure complete and lasting protection.

He was a Russian author, a master of realistic fiction, and one of the world’s greatest novelists. He received multiple nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature and that he never won is a major controversy.

Born to an aristocratic Russian family in 1828, he is best known for the novels War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877), often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. He first achieved literary acclaim in his twenties with his semi-autobiographical trilogy, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852–1856), and Sevastopol Sketches (1855), based upon his experiences in the Crimean War. Tolstoy's fiction includes dozens of short stories and several novellas. He also wrote plays and numerous philosophical essays.

Especially during his last three decades he also achieved world renown as a moral and religious teacher: in the 1870s Tolstoy experienced a profound moral crisis, followed by what he regarded as an equally profound spiritual awakening, as outlined in his non-fiction work A Confession (1882). His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him to become a fervent Christian anarchist and pacifist. Tolstoy's ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You (1894), had a profound impact on such pivotal 20th-century figures as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Tolstoy also became a dedicated advocate of Georgism, the economic philosophy of Henry George, which he incorporated into his writing, particularly Resurrection (1899).

He was married to Sophia Andreevna Behrs and had thirteen children. Their early married life was happy, Sonya acted as his secretary, editor, and financial manager.

He died from pneumonia.
