I'm happy to answer, thank you very much for asking! I'm indecisive and overflowing with love for HxH, so doing rankings is a challenge for me, but I put some thought into it and here are my answers for now!

Top 5 Characters:

5. Biscuit Krueger -- It's fun how Bisky isn't at all what you'd assume when we meet her character (in a few different ways), and I love her sassy attitude! She has a lot of different sides to her, and I find her very entertaining. Her strong personality makes how she plays off other characters especially amusing. I like that she can be somewhat cranky, self-serving, and rude at times, but she also has a softer and caring side to her. I look forward to seeing more of her role in the current arc!

4. Neferpitou -- I adore Pitou's design, and the combination of how sinister and also cute they are simultaneously, which is fitting of a very powerful cat (ant). I enjoy their mischievous and playful side as well! Their growth as a character throughout Chimera Ant Arc is so moving to me, and such a vital part of the arc and the message of the series as a whole.

3. Kurapika -- He's a great second protagonist for the series! The dichotomy of the brutality and darkness of his revenge/recovery mission and what succeeding at that requires from him, and his underlying gentle and polite demeanor are interesting to watch play out. I'm both excited and nervous to see what Togashi has in store for the rest of his arc...

2. Gon Freecss -- He's only very, very narrowly in second place, I adore him deeply and he and Killua are undoubtedly my two favorite characters of all time (from anything). I love how he initially seems to be a normal, cheerful, and strong-willed shounen protagonist, but as you go further in the story and look deeper into his character it becomes increasingly clear how unique and well-written he is. There's so much nuance to him and he's such a fulfilling character to explore and think about, I never get tired of it. Plus, of course he's adorable!

1. Killua Zoldyck -- I mean, who doesn't love him? He's such an incredibly multidimensional, fun, heartwrenching, fantastic character. His emotional growth throughout the series is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in a piece of fiction. His character design is so simple and yet so precious and iconic. There are tons of little touches to his character that contribute to making him feel so well-rounded and genuine. He and Gon utterly captured my heart my first time through the series and haven't let go even slightly.

Honorable mentions: Leorio, Alluka, Senritsu, I could go on and on... Togashi is a master at writing characters!

Top 5 Series Moments:

5. Gon and Killua on Whale Island -- I absolutely love the Whale Island episodes/chapters, they're such a reprieve from the many harrowing things going in the series otherwise, and it's wonderful to see Gon and Killua becoming closer. Their talk under the stars is such an important moment for them, setting the tone for their relationship going forward. I love thinking about all the fun they must have had that we don't see when they're on Whale Island, because they were there for a while and we only see a bit of it. These episodes/chapters are something I come back to a lot for comfort, and in the future I'm hoping we'll get another scene that echoes the scene under the stars...

4. "It has to be Killua." (From the dodgeball match.) -- There are so many layers to this scene, I love the complexity of it. From Gon's romantic-coded words towards Killua, Killua's very non-platonic response, and the contrast with Killua getting hurt on Gon's behalf, but it's because of Gon's respect for Killua's desire to help him at all costs... It's difficult to even summarize all the layers of what's going on without going deep into meta, it's a great microcosm of both the love and trust between the two, and some of the issues between them beginning to pop up, too.

3. The initial confrontation between Gon and Pitou/"It has nothing to do with you." -- The intensity of this scene is off the charts, both in the manga's incredible inked portrayal and the 2011 anime (with some of the absolute best voice acting I've ever seen in the hundreds of anime I've watched). Watching Gon lose control the way he does is chilling, and meanwhile we witness Pitou's growth as a character and the deep pain and conflict Killua faces. It's a difficult read/watch for sure, but an absolute turning point in the series and for the characters involved, and it's brilliantly executed and tragic.

2. Meruem and Komugi's lover's suicide -- This scene has made me cry hard so many times, it's beautiful and iconic and the absolute perfect climax to the Chimera Ant arc. One of the best and most heartwarming/heartbreaking scenes simultaneously I've ever seen.

1. "Gon, you are light." -- This scene was a major turning point for me when I watched the series the first time, and I still think it's an incredibly amazing and painful scene that says so much with so little. It's not just about Killua's increasingly hard to deny love for Gon, but also his self-esteem issues and how he sees himself in comparison to Gon, Killua's guilt over what happened to Kite, his denial of the cruel reality of what's happening because he deeply wants to see the optimistic way Gon does... And then of course with the scene going straight to Pitou holding Kite's decapitated head, it's really a gut punch.

This was difficult for me because there are SO many fantastic moments in HxH, I could easily make a top 20 or 30 and still not run out of scenes I adore. Of course, loving Gon and Killua's dynamic as much as I do, I go back to their scenes over and over again, and so that's what I'm focusing on here in my ranking. But there are tons of scenes not centered around them at all or only centered on one or the other that I also deeply love, and it's hard to leave all those out!

Thank you for asking my opinion! As hard as it is deciding on rankings, it was fun to think this over and write out some of my reasons why.

Reader being a neko wouldn't really be THAT surprising, since you can find some... odd shaped people in the HxH world. So I didn't expect reader to be hidden away, (But I'm guessing it's cause the fic takes place in the real world?) or for Killua to be a yandere! I was thinking he'd be normal. Hello! Thanks for this ask and sorry for the loong delay.

I absolutely love Kurapika. He was my first favorite character in the story, and I think he serves well as a parallel to Gon, especially in Yorknew and the following arcs. Both are extremeley goal-oriented, "selfish" in a way that they will control the situation so that pain and suffering must be experienced by them, and only them, even if it means to close communication with those they love, because they have low regard for their own body and contrasting concern for their friend's well being.

That said, I think Kurapika would be absolutely depressed. Just like Gon lost the target for his rage when Pitou surrended - a rage that fuels but can also distract him from his main objective if misguided - Kurapika needs the Troupe to live because rage is what gives him the strenght to be persistent. He probably would lose his resolve.

This happens with Netero as well in episode 112, when he admits losing resolve after Meruem delivers unexpected displays of empathy and love. But he's a well-experienced Hunter whose mindset works around the mission instead of emotions.

Kurapika may be seen as very mature due to his stoic expression but he's still very young, emotion-driven. Retrieving the Kurta eyes evokes extreme and personal emotions that require a target in order to keep him functional and focused - eliminate that target and he cant redirect that frustration to anyone but himself. I bet he would lose part of his resolve and freeze, before completely give in to even worse low regard for his life.

Sorry for the messiness oops

Big hxh kny crossover sketchdump, I imagined it going a bit like this but feel free to share your own thoughts for fun 👀:

•Killua asks for shelter at Gon's house after escaping from his family, since they both want to become demon slayers (Killua in order to keep watch on Alluka and Gon to follow in his father's steps) they take off soon after.

•They meet the elusive Wing and Zushi in an eerie clearing, they are introduced to the concept of breathing styles, and told to come back to train after finding Bisky on a mountain nearby.

•After a harsh training, they meet Leorio and Kurapika, two individuals with tragic pasts who are intent on becoming demon slayers as well, and finally participate in the final selection. (See hisoka in the background and expect it to get messy)

+ Kite became a demon controlled by the upper moon Pitou

+ Killua went to deliver Alluka from his family's basement (check previous hxh post for more context)

It's midnight and i can't sleep so I'm going to write a hxh essay that I've had in my brain for literally half a year. And like, I'm sure people have said this better than me before, but i literally can't have it in my brain anymore i need to write it down.

(I'll put a read more here when I wake up and open my computer because i literally can't find how to do it on my phone sorry)

Ok so we all know that hxh is about love right?? It's the core theme of the series and it's also the message, Right? I really hope I'm not hallucinating lmao.

Gon only survives pitou because he had people that loved him, because killua was willing to go against his whole family for him, because morel and knov respected and appreciated him, because leorio thought of him as family.

Kurapika survived the massacre because he loved pairo, and wanted to cure him. He wanted to go back to his family and he wanted pairo to be able to see. He left because he loved him and he the chose vengeance because of it too. He loved everyone so much he just couldn't take it.

Leorio wants to become a doctor because he loved Pietro, because he couldn't do anything to save him and he wants to prevent that pain for other people. Because he is considerate and caring and kind.

Love is literally everything in life and i will die on this hill.

But also, they way they deal with loss is also so so important.

Gon grows basically alone, and it seems like he takes it well, but we all know he is seriously fucked up in the head. He looks for answers and he wants to meet ging. He wants to what's so good and important about a hunter that it would be better than raising him. And like this might have a lot to do with the fact that I'm literally fatherless, but i understand that, i understand that need to know why you were abandoned.

And killua has to deal with the loss of his childhood, the trauma of abuse. And he seeks freedom, he seeks another family, people to rely on, who will fight for him and give him the option to choose, to draw away when it's too much.

And kurapika can't take the loss, he just can't deal with the fact that he was left alone that day that he returned. And of course he can't, he just suddenly lost literally everything and everyone he loved. And he was so, so young, that i don't blame him for avoiding the pain by choosing vengeance. Ultimately the vengeance is for him to run away from the pain, the anger is a distraction from the fact that he loved.

And leorio instead seeks to change things in some way. He finds himself powerless in a system that values more money than life, and is punched in the face with the fact that helping is also for the privileged, because med school is very fucking expensive. So he is forced to put himself in literal mortal danger to access an education. He wants to prevent further pain but he ultimately can't because the problem is the system that he lives in.

And i think that's why most antagonists in hxh are at least a little morally gray. Because even if Gon defeated pitou, he was selfish and stupid and damaged his most precious relationship. Kite was going to be fine regardless of his pain and regret. The problem was that he was in an unfair situation where there was literally no way to win.

Even if killua wants to be something else, he couldn't help that he was born into that family, that his society called for a system of solving problems that relied on violence. He was doomed since the day he was born by the power his family had and the way they perpetuated their place is society.

And kurapika is right in wanting to punish chrollo, he did very much kill a lot of people, but even if he gets rid of him and all the phantom troupe, they will just be replaced because the material reality of the place they came from would have stayed the same. He is quite literally just killing himself on a fools errand because in the end he would have solved literally nothing. The people he loved are still dead, there is still a literal garbage city and genocide is still being done, just by different people.

I think the thing that gives them strength is not the goal, but the companionship, the love and care of others.

That's why Gon was healed, and why killua took alluka away, and why kurapika was arguably happiest when he was with them, and why leorio keeps fighting.

They will achieve nothing if they separate because we can't live alone. No one is independent because that's just not what we are for, we were made to have families and friends and love. And it is shitty to lose people, but you won't be alone forever.

Kurapika gets away from leorio because he is afraid to have something else that can be taken from him, but he fails to realize that without friends and love we are nothing. He is miserable and empty because he refuses to let anyone in.

And like. Idk man. That's just. It's just so much. Like, yeah! Family is love! Care and understanding and loyalty!!! Devotion and selflessness!!!! I'm literally SOBBING.

Omg no, I don’t mind at all! I love talking about hxh :)

I actually thought about these questions for awhile and I’m not sure, but this is how I interpret everything:

We know Killua runs away from his family partly because he’s tired of killing, and despite seeing him murder with ease during the Hunter Exam, by the time he reaches Heaven’s Arena, he’s actively making an effort not to kill (despite being angry with Sadaso, Riehlvelt and Gido) and he remarks that “not killing people is hard,” so I think on some level he’s trying to change and be less like his family (and also a better person and friend to Gon?). We don’t get to see a ton of his regret, or if he even has any, since he’s pretty much on the go nonstop from the time he meets Gon until the end of the series when he leaves with Alluka. I have a feeling that he’ll have more time to reflect on things when he’s travelling with Alluka and not saving the world from ants, so maybe that would be the time where regret settles in a little more. As things are, Killua has put in a lot of work and grown so much over his journey, and maybe some of that comes from wanting to atone for his past (even if it wasn’t his fault). He frames Gon as light and himself as dark, so on some level he still sees himself that way imo

In terms of innocent lives, I’m inclined to say nooooo (kinda). 2 reasons:

1. In 1999 hxh Killua has a conversation with Anita about her father, and says that if the Zoldycks were hired to kill someone, they likely did something to deserve it (which is a fucked up thing to say, buuuuut it’s an interesting point). The best assassins in the world were probably not carrying out hits on nice little old ladies just going about their business.

2. Zeno’s reaction to Komugi in the CAA. He’s genuinely upset by the idea of killing someone who wasn’t a target, and the Zoldycks seem to have their own dubious moral code, so I can see it being a point of pride, professionalism, and maybe skewed ethics to be able to take out your target without anyone else being swept up in the crossfire. This reason is a little weaker though, since Illumi kind of throws that out the window with his needle people.

As for Gon and cats, I actually think he’d be okay with them. He’s pretty good at separating individuals and treating them based on his personal experience with them, so I don’t see him having that with regular non murder-ant cats. Gon tends to base his judgements on his own relationship with each person regardless of their actions toward others (unless it’s someone he cares about), which is where we get a lot of the fandom jokes with him being Very Okay with murder in a lot of cases. He doesn’t bat an eye at Killua’s past, and spares the scissor guy on Greed Island (I forget his name. The one who cut Bisky’s hair) because despite trying to kill Gon, Killua, and Bisky, in Gon’s mind, this guy taught him and Killua valuable new skills and helped them train, so he’s grateful to him, vs the Phantom Troupe, who he is furious with.

This is a long winded way of saying I think he’d be able to draw a distinction between cats and Pitou. (I do think he’d have nightmares about Pitou though, and about not being able to save Kite and hurting Killua)
