I picked up this book, A Soul To Keep by Opal Reyne, because the cover art reminded me of Elias from The Ancient Magus Bride and I was curious. I'm eight chapters in and I do believe I've bought someone's self published, filed off the serial numbers, Ancient Magus Bride smut fic.
I'm not mad, but what have I gotten myself into? There's six of these!

Mini Review: A Soul to Keep
Rating: 4/5 Stars
This book is loosely inspired by The Ancient Magus' Bride and Demonslayer, which is why I picked it up! It was a slow burn, which I didn't like, but the story was really good. It had fast-paced moments surrounded by long periods of Studio Ghibli slice-of-life stuff (plus smut). This is definitely one of the better monster smut books out there-- It is evident that a great deal of thought and time went into this book. I think it could have been about 100 pages shorter, but other readers will enjoy the systematic approach to relationship-building. Overall, A Soul to Keep is a very worthy read. And no hate is intended toward The Ancient Magus' Bride because I did like it, but Orpheus is way cooler. =)

A Soul to Keep (Duskwalker Brides #1) by Opal Reyne
Tumblr media
If you find yourself a fan of The Ancient Magus Bride (or if you’re a fan of this book first, go watch that) you will find yourself madly in love with this book. Not only is it a lovely reimagining with inspiration drawn from the aforementioned, but it is its’ own story. The writing stands out as some of the best and most comprehensive I’ve read in my monster fucker book times and the characters are well built, personable, and find beautiful growth through their 542-page story.
Reia is an outcast in her village and considered cursed, destined to be sold off to the next Duskwalker as penance for her “sins.” She’s our lead female character who knows what she wants, retains her self-respect, and has a bit of snark to her personality as well. She makes her way to the top of the list as one of my favorite female leads by being curious, willing to learn, and willing to accept her feelings (after a little, well, maybe a lot of debate with herself).
Orpheus is our massive male lead, a Duskwalker, one who adapts the attributes of those they consume. His wolf skull and antelope horns sit upon his big furry body, hidden beneath human clothing for what if his appearance was to scare his next human away? He is sweet, mostly considerate, desperate not to kill Reia, and a little naive in the ways of humans every once in a while.
I won’t get too much into the plot of this book as I truly believe it is one to be read with as much left to the imagination as possible. Just know it is a slow-burn romance between someone believed to be cursed and another desperate to ease the lonely ache of centuries alone, and don’t worry, the smut is plenty once they both come around to the idea. And with a body like that the action is creative, interesting, and hot to read. 10/10
Would I read again? Absolutely.
Would I recommend? Yes, and I do, please read this book!

Soul to Keep by Opal Reyne
For anyone who has extensively read monster romances, you’ll notice a repetition of certain monstrous characteristics within the mc: colorful skin, claws, sharp teeth, sometimes horns, and tails. Spooky enough to scare you at first, but still relatively humanoid. And we love them. But, that’s as monstrous as they get. Most books in the genre are stuck on one level of monster fuckery; humanoid in shape and very, very large, when there exists an entire pyramid of monster lover levels. Is this static enough for hardcore monster fuckers? Where are the monsters so far removed for humanity that you’ll do a double take?
That is one thing I love about a Soul to Keep. By Reyne’s own account, there just isn’t anything quite as similar to skull-faced Orpheus within paranormal romance, and so she took it upon herself to write about a truly monstrous character.
Anyone who loved The Ancient Magus’ Bride will love this book.
Orpheus, a bloodthirsty duskwalker, demands a bride every ten years from a village in exchange for protection, and as the story begins, he is offered Reia: a headstrong social outcast who doesn’t have enough fear in her body to let him intimidate her.
I enjoyed the cute progression of their friendship and their inevitable love story, and I particularly liked that Reia is determined to be self-sufficient. She isn’t a damsel in distress, and she refuses to be treated like she’s fragile.
The pacing of their relationship felt natural. Nothing was rushed and they didn’t jump headlong into fucking. This is a slow burn, and it was refreshing.
The only thing I did not like about this book was the style of writing. I think Reyne would have benefited from an editor to catch all the little errors throughout the book. But not much can change her style, which reminded me of a Wattpad novel. Because of this, I found it hard to get into, but the glowing reviews of some fellow book lovers convinced me to give it a chance. And I’m glad I did. Once the story progressed, I was hooked, and only jolted out of the narrative when some glaring grammatical errors presented themselves.
Set aside your weekend and give this book a try. Enjoy the sweet romance and the wonderfully murderous duskwalker and join me in counting down the days for the next book!

BODYLESS SOUL
Tumblr media
Happy Halloween everyone, let me introduce you to my most recent brainrot
A lil being i call Ghostly (real name tba)
Ain’t they wonderful?
Lucius Zogratis before messing around with devils, he tested what his magic could do and one night he wondered.
Can a soul exists without a body to begin with?
Create a soul was an interesting project, the result were less than what he expected
All that he ended up with was bodyless parasite that none but him could see, without any mana of its own or shape, and the thing had the audacity to try and invade his body.
His solution to the disappointment was simply, grandma’s old antique base, a cork and give it to Zenon.
Zenon, who then proceeded to lose it somewhere in a dungeon. Why care for a empty old base anyway, not like losing it would cause trouble to anyone, right?
Tumblr media
Magna had the unfortunate luck of finding Zenon lost base and accidentally break it.
The moment the mist came in contact with him, it started shaping and now a strange skeleton hovering i front of him. He had little time to scream before the ghost decided that his body could be borrowed.
Fan-fucking-tastic, just what he needed, a unknown entity that screamed for the blood of some Lucius Zogratis and keep messing with his magic and body.
Where’s was Asta when you needed an exorcism?
Also contrary to usual relation between fire colour and temperature, the blue fire of ghostly is not hot in anyway

this is no shade to the author or anything but A Soul To Keep feels like The Ancient Magus Bride fanfiction. what's the similarities? Reia and Chise both have a dead(or missing) mother, father and brother and both blame themselves, thinking they're cursed. they both have an experience with the skull headed beings towering over them in their sleep with this maw open to harm the sleeping women. both women are bought (reia is payment to protect a village and chise is literally bought at an auction). both Elias and Orpheus have mage powers and can talk without opening their mouths and don't completely understand human emotions. like I said, no shade but the comparisons are pulling me out of enjoying them both fully. though, I think with a Soul To Heal, Opal Reyne is developing her own story that doesn't seem so obviously inspired.

Gamora (created by Jim Starlin) made her first appearance in Strange Tales 180# (cover date June, 1975). The issue also introduced Yon-Lok, Zen-Whoberis, and the Homeworld ("The Judgement!", Strange Tales 180#, Comic, Event)

soul for aerith && persephone ty
Meme
"Aerith, a garden that never slumbers, the soft crunch of freshly fallen leaves underfoot as summer turns to autumn, the fleeting sounds of birds somewhere in the distance, never near nor far."
"Beloved Persephone, Soft laughter beneath the wings of crystal kissed fireflies, pages turning and turning, joined in chorus by the softest of touches shared between brush and paper. Soft feet kissed by soil, giving way to something new, something more. The birds calling home as dusk whispers sweet nothings."
