There is a new exhibition called 'La Moda en la Casa de Alba/The Fashion in the House of Alba' at Palacio de Liria in Madrid from October 19th to March 31st. It covers two centuries of the family through their fashion with designs by Charles Frederick Worth, Louise Chéruit, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Flora Villareal, Manuel Pertegaz, and Enmanuel Húngaro. The exhibition includes dresses worn by Empress Eugénie of France, also the Countess of Montijo, and the wedding dresses of Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart, 18th Duchess of Alba, Eugenia Martínez de Irujo, 12th Duchess of Montoro, and Sofía Palazuelo Barroso, Duchess of Huéscar. You can find out more about visiting here.
There are no jewels on display due to security concerns and the cost of insuring them but I noticed in the background of one of the pictures is a portrait of the Duchess of Huéscar wearing the Alba Strawberry Leaf Coronet.
Tumblr media
It looks like it was part of the same photo session as the portrait that was found to be on display at Palacio de las Dueñas in Seville in January.
Tumblr media
I need to see a better quality picture of Sofia wearing the tiara!
Strawberry leaf ducal-style coronets are very popular amongst Spanish nobility. The one is made of emeralds, diamonds, and pearls and was supposedly a gift from Empress Eugénie to her sister, María Francisca de Sales de Palafox Portocarrero y Kirkpatrick, 16th Duchess of Peñaranda de Duero, wife of the 15th Duke of Alba. Here it is worn by María del Rosario Falcó y Osorio, 21st Countess of Siruela, and María del Rosario de Silva y Gurtubay, 9th Marchioness of San Vicente del Barco, wives of the 16th and 17th Dukes respectively.
Tumblr media
Of course it was most famously worn by María del Rosario Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart y Silva, 18th Duchess of Alba, and most titled person in the world before she passed away in 2014.
Tumblr media
If anyone goes to the exhibition and is able to get better shot of the portrait, I would very much appreciate if you would send it to me.

Hey Neighbors! So, this is only related to Napoleonic era very loosely, but I recently found out something interesting about Goya.
Or well, not GOYA HIMSELF per se, but one of the people he knew.
Meet María del Pilar Teresa Cayetana de Silva Álvarez de Toledo, the 13th Duchess of Alba, a patron of Goya and his ALLEGED lover/muse. We don’t know if they were lovers. The paintings below are Goya’s btw:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, what is important to know here is that the Duchess of Alba was one of the wealthiest people in all of Spain.
One of the last descendants of a powerful aristocratic family, the Duchess was married off to a cousin at age 12 to keep their titles and wealth in the same family.
There is even a theory that the model who posed for The Nude Maja and The Clothed Maja was this particular woman, but this is not proven:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
The Duchess died quite suddenly in her forties, officially of tuberculosis. Not much as truly known about her, though we DO know that she and her husband were childless.
However, the Duchess did have a foster daughter of sorts!
Meet María de la Luz, a child of Cuban slaves basically gifted to the Duchess, but promptly freed and raised as a daughter:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the girl definitely was a victim of slavery and colonialism, she was the closest thing the Duchess had to a daughter and she even became a beneficiary of a large chunk of the impressive fortune of her foster mother.
María de la Luz could not become the next Duchess of Alba though, as Cayetana de Alba had male blood relatives who ended up getting the title and the lands, but María de la Luz was definitely set for life and still became very rich thanks to the inheritance.
We don’t know what happened to the girl, but there is a book that explores her story in the realm of fiction, and I think I’m going to review it in the future…
Here is the book btw!
Tumblr media
It’s written by an Uruguayan author, who apparently wrote a book about Frev too…
The title here is translated as Cayetana’s Daughter, as that was essentially the relationship between the Duchess and María de la Luz.
P. S. ALL of the artwork shown was made by Goya, including the portrait of the Duchess with the baby.

The runaway princess, rather not be dressed in a gown but out in the stables and walking the land.
She tends to be seen in the main hall trying to jewelry, making sure the guards know what needs to be done and questioning everyone.
Sweet, charming with a soft smile on her face, clever and gentle with most.
She tends to be very helpful and always tries to see the other person’s perspective.
As her brother rules, she’s in her corner of the palace reading and writing, setting up events for others in the land to attend, and getting fitted for certain items of clothing.
— Lady Alexandra ‘Lexi’ Banner 🍏
Tumblr media
One wouldn’t think she’s upper class like her brother and nephew due to the way she acts and dresses, but she is.
Always told to say quiet, sit straight, talk when needed and act pretty like she’s romanized by the lifestyle.
Carries around a small pet, like a dog per say, since she’s found nearby the gardens.
She tends to have a bit of a temper, getting twitchy at times and playing quietly with her nails, listening to other people speak.
Not interested in falling into any man’s arms that walked past her. Mostly because she’s unseen by most at parties, so the girl will find herself nearby the treats table.

Isabel of Castile, First Duchess of York
Isabel was the third of four children of King Pedro I, also known as Pedro the Cruel, who ruled the Crown of Castile from 1350. Her mother was the vivacious and intelligent Maria de Padilla, often described as Pedro's mistress. In 1361, when Isabel was only six, her mother died. The following year, Pedro declared that he and Maria had been lawfully married before he was forced to espouse his estranged French wife, Blanche of Bourbon, who was by then also dead, some said murdered by her husband. His claim of an earlier marriage was subsequently endorsed by the Cortes, thus legitimising Pedro's children by Maria. Pedro was killed by his illegitimate half-brother and deadly enemy Enrique of Trastámara in March 1369. Trastámara became King Enrique II of Castile.
Isabel accompanied her elder sister Constanza to England, and married Edmund of Langley, son of Edward III and Philippa of Hainault, in 1472 at Wallingford, as part of a dynastic alliance in furtherance of the Plantagenet claim to the crown of Castile. Isabel was only 16 or 17 to Edmund’s 31, and brought him no lands or income or even the promise of such because her sister Constanza – who married Edmund’s elder brother John of Gaunt as his second wife – was their father’s heir. John and Constanza spent many years trying unsuccessfully to claim her late father’s throne from her illegitimate half-uncle Enrique of Trastamara, while Edmund and Isabel were required to give up any claims to the kingdom of Castile and were not compensated.
Tumblr media
As a result of her marriage, Isabel became the first of a total of eleven women who became Duchess of York. She was appointed a Lady of the Garter in 1379. In their twenty years of marriage, the Duke and Duchess of York had three children:
Edward of Norwich, Duke of York
Constance
Richard of Conisburgh, Earl of Cambridge
Contemporary sources suggest that Edmund and Isabel were an ill-matched pair and their relationship was a rocky one, with Isabel accused of having an affair with John Holland, Duke of Exeter and half-brother to Richard II. The affair is believed to have started as early as 1374 and likely continued for a decade. As a result of her indiscretions, Isabel left behind a tarnished reputation. The chronicler Thomas Walsingham considered her to have somewhat loose morals.
John Holland has also been suggested as the real father of Isabel’s youngest son, Richard of Conisburgh, who was the grandfather of Edward IV and Richard III. The fact that his father Edmund of Langley and brother Edward, both, left him out of their wills has fuelled this theory. However, leaving a son out of your will was not entirely unusual, and Richard had died when his brother made his will.
Tumblr media
Isabel of Castile died in December 1392 at the age of about 37 and was buried at Langley Priory in Hertfordshire. In her will, Isabel left items and gifts of money to close relatives by blood or marriage, and to numerous servants of hers, men and women. Isabel referred to Edmund of Langley as her "very honoured lord and husband of York", and left him all her horses, all her beds including the cushions, bedspreads, canopies and everything else that went with them, her best brooch, her best gold cup, and her "large primer". Isabel named King Richard II as her heir, requesting him to grant her younger son, Richard, an annuity of 500 marks. Isabel left nothing at all to her older sister Constanza, duchess of Lancaster, and failed even to mention her. Isabel doesn't forget John Holland in her will, at this time married to Elizabeth of Lancaster, John of Gaunt's daughter.
About 11 months later her widower married Joan Holland, niece of Isabel's supposed lover, John Holland. In another bizarre family twist, it was Joan’s brother, Edmund Holland, Earl of Kent, who had an affair – and an illegitimate daughter – with Constance of York, the daughter of Edmund and Isabel. In Edmund’s own will of 1400 he requested burial ‘near my beloved Isabele, formerly my consort.’  Despite Isabel of Castile's bad reputation and supposedly having been involved in a court scandal that humiliated her husband, Edmund seems to have felt great affection for her as demonstrated by his willingness to rest eternally with Isabel and not with his second wife.

Eugène de Beauharnais to his wife Auguste of Bavaria on occasion of their eight wedding anniversary:
14 January, 1814 I only need to think of this day, my dear Auguste, to know that Providence protects my life. What happiness, what charms I owe to this 14 January which united my destiny to that of the most beautiful, of the best, of the most virtuous of women. It’s to spare your modesty that I avoid repeating this truth to you; because everyday I feel it and I would like to be able to love you even more, to love you as much as you deserve it. Goodbye, my good friend, may we both live to celebrate fifty years of marriage. And may Heaven above all be good enough not to call one of us without the other!
Auguste's reply to Eugène:
15 January, 1814 Isn’t my fortune enviable? I am the happiness of the one I would sacrifice my life for…; all my illusion is focused on belonging to the best of men; if it were possible, I would love him even more. And because God has been this far so good to us, I hope that he will call us to him together; even so, I pray to him daily to not let me live for more time than you.
ON THIS DAY, IN 1806, EUGÈNE DE BEAUHARNAIS, VICEROY OF ITALY, MARRIED PRINCESS AUGUSTE OF BAVARIA IN A RELIGIOUS CEREMONY. They'd had a civil wedding the day before. Eugène was the son of Empress Josephine and her first husband Alexandre de Beauharnais. Auguste was the eldest daughter of King Maximilian I of Bavaria and his first wife Princess Auguste Wilhelmine of Hesse-Darmstadt. Bavaria had only been recently elevated to the rank of kingdom thanks to Napoleon, and Auguste's hand in marriage for his step-son (whom he adopted the day of the civil ceremony) had been one of his conditions.
Although originally a political union, the marriage turned out to be a happy one. Eugène and Auguste had seven children, among them Queen Josephine of Sweden and Empress Amelie of Brazil.
