aghhh i’ve been thinking about the httyd books again and how Absolutely Insane they are…. i ADORE watching people react to them because there’s this one point in the series where everything just feels different. and they don’t give you time to process what on earth happened before launching you head first full speed into one of the best pieces of literature i think i’ve ever read
when you’re off of work would you please elaborate on your hannibal service top agenda,,, please my family is starving
i don’t want anyone to starve so obviously I will extrapolate on the service top aspect of Hannibal Lecter o7!! I am going to get so carried away and I apologize in advance.
Alright going to start this off by saying I do think they’re vers but only in regards to each other, I think for canon relationships, Will has a tendency to allow himself to be directed while Hannibal loves to orchestrate. With each other, though, it grows increasingly and alluringly complicated. Arguments could be made and subsequently thrown out depending on what part of the show you’re watching and post fall is an entire free-for-all because you can’t tell me two grown men survive murder-suicide via cliff and then settle into the puritanical rigidity of who tops and who bottoms.
Okay that being said, honestly i could make the case that both of them lean more toward making sure whoever they’re with is getting the most out of the encounter (maybe for different reasons; the popular trope of Will’s empathy causing a sort of blissful feedback loop and in Hannibal’s case, it stands to reason the politeness overlaps with a challenging sort of hedonism, he’s in control and playful about it) but I think that specifically for Hannibal, Will’s reactions are what he’s constantly seeking and then hoarding. Like. Will responding to stimuli that Hannibal presents is basically the premise of the show and Hannibal very clearly gets off on that, maybe not anywhere explicitly but we see shots of his pupils dilating, his gaze always caught on Will, licking his lips, all in response to Will reacting to him. It’s very rare he’s outright hungry at the beginning of a conversation or interaction, he seems to maintain a sense of aloofness until Will snarks or baits or replies or even defers and then, it’s as though he’s desperate to see more. I'm not getting into the whole them eating meals together because I'll devolve very quickly but like. just keep in mind the way Hannibal watches Will eat, as though he savors Will instead of the meal he cooked. Right. Okay. He gets caught up in Will’s responses very quickly, enraptured and almost stupid about it and trying to immediately trigger more which!! Goes hand and hand with him doing very uh lets say unique acts of service (the malewife jokes are only half jokes); the breakfasts & dinners, the driving, the caretaking. Yes all that’s manipulative but to Hannibal, that doesn’t negate that it’s still getting him the responses he wants and that’s also maybe why he’s so quick to say they’re friends because he’s viewing it as a form of relationship building and quite frankly, that is the only way that man knows how to build relationships; he sets himself up as a crutch and then breaks your leg and unfortunately at that point, for Will, for Jack, for Abigail, for Bedelia, for Chiyoh, you are too grateful to be standing that you forget he’s the reason you can’t do it on your own. The others I mentioned learn either very quickly or very (in painful irony) rudely that he is only a crutch as long as he enjoys it, as long as he can benefit from holding you aloft.
However. In Will’s case, he tries to remove himself and finds that it’s him who can’t stand and he’s immediately resentful and desperate to take back that ability, leaving another gift, another act of service, for Will to prove that he can still provide it and detrimentally putting himself on the map for Jack and Mason in the process. He’s so eager to have Will’s response, he waits at his own fucking crime scene. Will gives him what he wants and he’s too overwhelmed to respond with any sort of power or immediate selfishness, he runs again. And then. Muskrat Farms and his surrender. I feel like I don’t even need to explain why that backs up my case here, that man is so so ready to rescue and then surrender all because Will’s involved; two things he’s never done in his entire life, they essentially reduce him to this almost pathetic thing and it doesn’t give him pause at all because again, they’re acts of service whether Will wants them at that point or not. Like Bedelia said it best, he’s obsessed, he wants every reaction, every word, every sigh and curse, he’s very single-minded about getting them and he doesn’t care who he has to hurt, himself or others, to get them. Now, combine all that and the cliff scene and tell me that man doesn’t spend every second they’re in a bed together completely and utterly focused on Will and Will alone.
currently thinking about how even the most cruel and cold emperor Aurangzeb got so melted and mesmerized by a Hindu classical dancer mistress that he legit FAINTED on seeing her for the first time in a garden
One of the few plusses of being touch starved is people can say they're petting me or rubbing my belly or squishing my face and my genuine responses make them happy and that makes me extra happy. It's like I get bonus points and they get a little return on their investment!
The amount of platonic love and tenderness in Michael's farewell letter to Louisa is off the charts. And one of the signs of that love is the kind of focus Michael places on small mundane things about Louisa. Like the detail with which he describes the ways she laughs: "your short little laugh. Not quite a bark, but a shift so sudden that it has to be genuine. [...] So real, never forced. No melody to it, really, but still musical. Sometimes short and guttural. Sometimes a cackle, like notes going up a scale". Michael describes Louisa's laughter in such a specific way that shows the attention he pays to her and the way he holds her ordinary mannerisms in his mind. He doesn't describe her laugh with the kind of typical compliments that could be seen as generic - it's so clear that these descriptions are specific to Louisa and his memories of her, and there's so much love in that specificity.
Then there's the story of Michael bringing whiskey back from the kitchen without even realising, and the way he remembers Louisa's expression when she noticed: "everything, everything I needed to know was there, every freckle and contour. There was no judgment. Your face was open, your eyes soft and understanding, your mouth bent into the smallest knowing grin, your expression just barely pinched, just a touch of pain". There's something so profound to me about the level of attention he pays to the details of her expression, and how those small signals communicated something important between them without words.
These are two characters whose relationship has been repeatedly confirmed to be purely platonic (and remaining platonic) both within the podcast and by the show creators. It means so much to me that as part of that platonic dynamic, Michael pays such close loving attention to Louisa, and he remembers these ordinary details even when he's dying and hasn't seen her in months, and he says things like "your face, I could fall into it, like it was a calm lake or a pool. I could fall into it and float."
cannoli - how does your muse express love? how do they act when in love that differs from how they act around others normally?

Rafal's love language relies primarily on materialistic and verbal ways of expressing love. The former is straightforward, easy, and tangible. It requires little explanation, is less compromising compared to outright confessions, and doesn't necessitate putting his heart as openly on display. He gives handmade confections to the Divine One once during their support chain and attempts to do so again in a wake-up event.
Nil was also fond of gift-giving, specifically flowers. Rafal for all his former masquerading did retain parts of Nil that he not only emulated but went on to preserve in his own behavior - unconsciously or otherwise. In terms of verbosity on the other hand, words come to him with a good deal more difficulty. This is also a perfect segue into how he behaves while in love.
The hardship in expressing himself and easy agitation with emotions will perpetually be there, underlying. Rafal's sense of embarrassment at vulnerability is a response to his survival instincts to remain guarded. After centuries of keeping his true feelings and even his identity under lock some part of him will always keep his cards close. But it doesn't mean that he isn't susceptible to cracks; private or veiled moments of appreciation for the one he loves when he thinks they aren't listening.
Rafal: I do not know if I could stand to wait another thousand years. Not for you. I believe I would lose my mind. To mourn for you like that...it would break me.
Alear: (awakens)
Rafal: Ah... No, it was nothing important. I am glad to see that you are awake. Listen...when the end comes...let me be the first of us to sleep eternally.
This eloquence within itself is already a massive difference. The Rafal who is holding himself back or is on platonic terms and the Rafal who is in love and actively being encouraged for his advances are two different beasts. I like to envision a set of floodgates straight up bursting open when it comes to the enamored aspect of this identity. He's bold, forward, possessive, and jealous, but also plaintive, sensitive, and deeply loving once given the green light.
Get past his guilt, move past his walls, and the door opens into someone who essentially sees the object of his love as his priceless treasure. His treasure in every single way who he doesn't want to share with anyone else. In foresight, Rafal is pretty emblematic of how a hoarding dragon might love; selfish, attentive, absorbed, and unwilling to relinquish the jewels in his hoard.
[ Ally notebook — Every Day With Rafal (JPN) ]
"He may be easily embarrassed and won't tell you his honest feelings, but he cherishes you deeply. When you're alone with someone, he gets so jealous that he glares at you from afar. He keeps his promise ring in a container made of his own scales and protects it so that no one else can see it let alone touch it."
Oh yeah, and did I mention Rafal is also a cheeky flirt.
Ironically, Rafal is more 'dangerous' when he knows he has the favor to act. He's emboldened, he's passionate, he suggests to spend time together without batting an eye, and doesn't skirt around the prospect of physical relations. Intimacy in this regard is another method he uses to quantify and prove the depth of his regard, which he outright says. This dialogue is exclusive to JPN Rafal's Pact Ring wake-up event.
Rafal: Today I have time...how much I yearn for you...I'll make you understand it.
Whoever he is in love with, he effectively keeps them on their toes and sometimes even walking on a bed of nails which warrants the saying: never a boring day.
you know in terms of the whole body image journey thing, it has been a HUGE relief to be TOLD by my doctor that it was a good thing I gained weight. She was like girl you WERE lighter in high school and that wasn't..... a good thing (paraphrased.... my doctor does not talk like this lol). You're a healthy weight now and I want you to maintain this. Do NOT try to lose any more weight. And I was like okay that's actually......... that really helps, actually. First of all being told to my face that I don't have to lose weight but also that I shouldn't be focusing on going back to what I looked like in high school. It really helped with realising that I should be focusing more on whether or not my body is healthy and functioning and strong.
