Steve has always been confused when people describe family- the structure, what it means to them, any of it. His parents were always distant with him. The babysitters they hired weren't any better.
He's never really considered family important or significant. It's a meaningless word to him. He has his relatives and that's it. He doesn't have any family, not the way people describe it as anyway.
Well. He used to think like that. He thought like that for a while and, for most of that time, he was right. But it very quickly turned around.
It started with Dustin.
The kid was clearly in awe of Steve. Steve had seen it clear as day and found himself desperate to keep him safe. And he did- he worked hard to keep the brat alive, despite repeated efforts to undermine that. And Dustin is so fiercely loyal.
"You die, I die!" Dustin had yelled at him once.
Steve had stared at him, with a sudden cold realization; he loves Dustin. The kid is his family. A weird mix between a little brother and a son. And Dustin clearly felt just as strong for him.
He already knew how ready he was to die for Dustin. He knew now, without a doubt, that nothing would be able to stop him from keeping him safe.
But, he reasoned, one pseudo-kid is enough.
Then Lucas had turned to him one summer. He wanted to get into basketball and knew Steve used to play. It was supposed to be simple practices, some tips and things like that. Nothing special, just advice between friends. Because that's all they were, at the time.
Over the summer, with all the time spent together, they quickly because good friends. And, again, Steve kept telling himself that it's just that. Friends. He's already got a weird pseudo-kid with Dustin.
Watching the game, however, quickly shatters that illusion. As soon as Lucas had stepped onto the court, Steve thought; "thats my kid!"
And Steve thought having one kid was a blessing- a horrible, sarcastic, needy blessing but a blessing none-the-less. Having two is chaotic, but oddly comforting. They're both so different and fill spaces in his heart he hadn't known were empty. They're more family than Steve had ever thought he'd be allowed to have.
But Max had quickly stepping into the picture.
There was always something about her that made Steve feel even more protective. Their first real time spent together being that van, the demodogs, definitely didn't help. He doesn't think he'll ever forget hearing her scream. He doesn't think he's ever moved as fast as he had then.
Seeing Billy getting aggressive with Lucas had only heightened it all. He'd only known Max a few days when he realized that she would never be able to shake him now.
Even when Max tried to push him away, after Billys death, saying the cruelest things she could thing of to get him to back off, he hadn't. He'd simply started to call her parents instead, made sure they knew if they needed anything, if Max ever wanted to vent to him again, he's still there. He's still waiting.
Seeing her in a hospital dead, essentially dead just… it feels like someone has shoved their arm down his throat and pulled his lungs out. Like someone has taken something so vital...
The only comfort, the only person who seems to settle him, is Eddie Munson. But... Eddie isn't part of his little pseudo-family. He wants him to be. He doesn't. It's... confusing. Because he likes Eddie.
Eddie, who lets Steve hold his fingers to his wrist so he can feel his pulse. Eddie, who insists on being moved into a wheelchair so Steve isn't sat in Maxs room alone. Eddie, who doesn't let anyone make Steve go home even though he probably should. Eddie, who looks at Steve like he hasn't failed him or the kids.
One day, Steve asks. He has to, he has to know.
"You're a good dad to them," Eddie explains. He quickly holds up a hand when Steve tries to deny it. "You are. And you aren't the only one who forgets it. You need someone to look out for you too and, since Buckley is too busy hitting on your ex, you're stuck with me."
"I'm not stuck," is all Steve could think to say.
"Hm?"
Steve ducks his head, tries to pull back but Eddie just holds onto his hand tighter. "I'm not... I don't feel stuck. With you."
"Good."
Steve glanced up. Eddie rewarding him with a bright grin, lifting his hand up to kiss the back of it. Steve can feel his face heating up. He doesn't feel embarrassed though, hopes the little smirk means that Eddie is taking his blush as encouragement.

There was only one thing that could have dragged Steve out of bed at two in the morning when he was nursing a booze-induced headache and an Eddie Munson-induced heartache.
“We need you,” she said.
He didn’t even bother putting on a jacket.
***
Dustin was sloppy, red-eyed and so unsteady that when Steve thunked a strong hand down on his shoulder, he almost lost his balance turning away from the group of asshats he’d taken up with to see who had grabbed him. Some of the drink in his hand sloshed over the sides of the cup and dribbled down the front of his shirt and onto the already filthy kitchen floor.
“Hey, what the—” he began, and then he dragged his gaze up to land on Steve.
There was a time, not so very long ago, when those same eyes would’ve lit up at the sight of his babysitter slash idol slash best friend. He would wrap him in a hug if it had been a day or two since he’d seen him, or sling a companionable arm around him, or punch him good-naturedly in the arm in hopes of initiating a play scuffle, which inevitably ended with him in a headlock getting his mop of curls aggressively tousled because he was just never going to have any kind of athletic edge on Steve.
But now.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” the younger boy asked in a tone so sharp and cold and so very NOT-Dustin that it made Steve’s heart squeeze painfully in his chest.
“Hey, man,” Steve said, aiming for casual if only to keep Dustin from embarrassing himself in front of his new asshat friends. “Can I talk to you? Step outside with me for a sec, okay?”
“Um, no,” Dustin bit out. “This’s my party, i'ss my house. It would be rude to leave my guests.”
“Yeah, since you brought that up … who are these people?” Steve swept his gaze over the Henderson kitchen, which was almost unrecognizable with all of the clutter, displaced furniture, and wasted teenagers. “And Dustin … where’s your mom?”
“Not here.”
“Well yeah, I kind of gathered that. Listen, Dust…”
“Don’t call me that.”
“Are the others here?”
“Oh, you mean the traitors who called and ratted me out to YOU? Who the fuck cares?” His voice lowered to what he seemed to think was a conspiratorial level but was really just an extremely loud stage whisper. “Maybe they tripped and fell and landed their buzzkill asses back in the Upside Down.”
“Okay, that’s it.”
Before Dustin could protest, the cup was plucked from his hand and tossed expertly across the room, over the heads of several unwary drunken youths and into the crusty-dish-crowded sink and he was being towed along behind Steve through the kitchen, the living room, out the front door.
“What the fuck, Harrington? Let go of me! Let go!” Dustin struggled against the vise grip on his bicep but only succeeded in ensuring he’d probably have finger-shaped bruises there tomorrow.
Steve paid him no mind until he had deposited the boy into the passenger seat of his car, slammed the door, and locked it. Then he walked around to the driver’s side, unlocked it only long enough to get in, relocked it, and turned to Dustin.
“First of all,” he began loudly, drowning out Dustin’s sputtering attempts to find the words he wanted to hurl at Steve in his outrage at being manhandled out of his own party. “First of all. Joking about the Upside Down in a room full of strangers? NOT OKAY.”
“They don’t even know what—”
“Not. Fucking. Okay. SECOND, if you ever imply again that one of ours should BE in the Upside Down, you will find yourself with my foot so far up your ass you’ll choke on my shoe, and if you think I’m joking about that, Dustin, try me.”
This time there was only an eye-roll from Dustin, because he kind of didn’t want to try Steve on that point and because he kind of felt bad about saying it.
“Third, your friends are not traitors. They care about you and they’re worried about you; they called me for help because you’re treating them like shit and shut down every attempt they make to help you. Listen, I know I’m not your favorite person right now, Dustin, but you have to let someone help you. You’re not okay, buddy. This isn’t you. And all this shit you’re doing, the drinking and the partying and the pretending not to give a damn? It isn’t going to fix anything. It … it won’t bring him back.”
“Shut up!” Dustin shouted, flinching so hard at the words that he smacked the back of his head against the side window. Steve winced at the sound of skull meeting glass and resisted the urge to reach out and check for blood, or a bump. Dustin seemed not to have noticed that he’d nearly brained himself, infusing his next words with all the venom he could muster. “You don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about, Steve. Even if you were right, it’s none of your business what I do! I am none of your business.”
“Don’t say shit like that, Dustin. Of course you’re my business.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah! What are you saying?”
Dustin barked out a humorless laugh. “As much as I’d like to sit here with you and have a heart to heart right now, I have to get back to my guests.”
“No,” Steve snapped, reaching over Dustin to slap down the peg lock when the teen yanked it up. “We’re not done here. Now I can go inside and clear out your house and we can talk there, or you can drop the bullshit and talk to me right now.”
“You’re not shutting down my party.”
“Then we talk here.”
“I have nothing to say to you.”
“Right, sure you don’t. Maybe I can give you some words, then. How about this, Dustin? How about: ‘Hey, Steve, you useless idiot loser, you promised to keep us safe and then you fucked it all up like you always do. The plan didn’t work and Max got hurt and Eddie fucking died, and you couldn’t stop it. I hate you for that, for lying and making us feel safe and telling us it was going to be okay. I can’t even look at you anymore and I hate my friends because they don’t hate you for some reason, but we know, don’t we? We know whose fault it is that we came back a man short. It’s yours, Steve. Yours.’” Steve’s voice was cracked and painful, like he’d been eating gravel and chasing it with cheap whisky and cigarettes. It hurt, that voice. “How’s that, Dust?” he finished, staring unflinching into Dustin’s shocked eyes. “Am I in the ballpark?”
Before Steve could react, Dustin unlocked his door and flung himself out of the car. He was drunk and it was dark, though, and he only made it a few yards before tripping and landing hard on the grass. Steve was on him almost instantly, hauling him up by the arms and scanning him for injuries.
He didn’t see the punch coming, wouldn’t have believed Dustin Henderson capable of such an effective hit, right in the mouth, knocking him back a couple of feet. “Jesus, Dustin!” he shouted, touching his lip and staring dumbfounded when his fingers came away wet with blood. “What the fuck, man?”
“Hit me back.”
“What? No! Dustin, what’s—”
“HIT ME BACK, STEVE! You have to!” Dustin’s voice cracked, the sudden violent burst of emotion threatening to unleash something big and scary and unforgivable. A tidal wave that had a name.
Steve grappled wildly with the boy, trying to grab his flailing arms so he could pin him, but Dustin was surprisingly swift in his current state, and he launched another punch, this one landing heavy in Steve’s gut and socking the breath right out of him.
“HIT ME, STEVE! I KNOW YOU WANT TO, JUST DO IT!”
Fueled by a burst of frustration and a sharper burst of fear (what is this?), Steve recovered enough to trap Dustin’s arms against his body, using his own weight to twist the boy around until he was trapped with his back against Steve, the hold immobilizing him so all he could do was squirm and shout out his fury. “LET ME GO FUCK YOU STEVE WHY WON’T YOU JUST FIGHT BACK YOU ASSHOLE?!”
“Dustin, stop. Stop it. Breathe, Dustin. Take a breath. No, hey, stop. You’re not going anywhere until you calm down for me. Breathe. Shhh, buddy. Breathe,” Steve’s hold was unbudging, his tone stern but soothing. Dustin’s violent struggles gradually slowed, and it took a couple of minutes for Steve to realize that the boy was shaking with silent sobs. And then the sobs became words, almost indecipherable in the wrecked, wretched voice that was rough and strained from screaming.
Every sentence Steve parsed from the stream of horrible self-accusations added another crack to his heart, which couldn’t have been more than a mess of spiderwebbing at this point.
It’s my fault.
He’s dead because of me.
I couldn’t save him.
You loved him, I know you did.
Why don’t you hate me?
Why don’t you hate me?
Why don’t you hate me?
Finally, finally, the words stopped and Dustin sagged, exhausted, in Steve’s arms. Only then did Steve ease up on his hold, but only long enough to turn the boy around and hug him properly. He bent down to bury his face in the unruly curls, his own tears falling unchecked and inconsequential.
“Dustin,” he whispered into the mop of hair. “Oh, Dustin, never.”
And when he realized he didn’t have the right words, he just stopped. He just picked Dustin up and carried him to his car, buckled him into the passenger seat, and told him he would be right back. He had a party to break up, some kids to chase away, and a boy—his boy—to mend.
“You loved him, I know you did.”
With a soul-cleansing breath that sounded more like a sob, Steve made his way back up to the Hendersons’ house.

Steve owes Erica free ice cream for life and she means it. They both mean it.
He makes up different sundae combinations for her with different themes based on whatever her interests are at the time. When she gets super into environmentalism he goes green- mint chip, pistachio, making green ice cream meadows with rainbow sprinkle flowers. They attempt the upside down sundae with the cherry and whipped cream on the bottom to mixed success. Sometimes it’s just a goofy lil creature face drawn out in candy. They are declared lame but delicious.
The day before she leaves for college, Erica solemnly releases him from his promise. Her dorm doesn’t have a freezer. Steve understands and he’s so proud of her but he’s going to miss inventing new combinations.
Still, during her first bout of midterms, when she and her newly made friends are beginning to stress out, they get a call from the RA, there’s a delivery for her in the lobby. The local ice cream parlor delivers one of each of her favorites of the sundaes he made her over the years and a note that he’s sure she’ll be able to find someone willing to help her eat the rest of it.

Fics that focus on Steve's relationships with the kids will always have my heart.
Steve having sleepovers with El and max, letting them paint his nails and do tiny braids in his hair
Playing sports with Lucas and showing him that enjoying traditionally masculine hobbies doesn't have to be negative or toxic
Letting Will explain DND to him, and being more patient than he is with anyone else explaining "the nerd game", because he knows how rare it is for Will to be so openly happy and carefree
Swapping insults and comebacks with Mike, but when he seems off or quiet, Steve making him food and letting Mike just have his company
Having big sleepovers with all the kids, making sure to provide snacks that they all like, stocking all of their favourites, lending half of them old t shirts to sleep in because they insist they forgot (they always try and steal the t shirts) and rotating who is allowed to choose the movie.
No matter what they need, Steve tries to be it, because there is nothing that matters to him more than his found family

Steve: Dustin is a total dumbhead!
Eddie: Yeah, that boy's ego is taller than his body.
Someone else: I know right.
Eddie, menacingly turning towards that person: ...what did you just say about our boy?
Steve, swinging his baseball bat: You wanna die?

Steve McGarrett as a parent
Steve, *on the phone*: Just snap his kneecaps and he’ll talk, I’m at a parent teacher conference.
Steve: Anyways, you said Freddie is enjoying finger painting! That's great.
---------------------------------------------------
I have a headcanon that if Steve ever had a kid, he'd name it after Freddie.

I just realised this could be where Steve saw his 6 kids dream ( and it includes his nuggets 😭)
Tumblr media
We all know about Steve's absent parent and implied parental neglect. Poor boy is celebrating Christmas with the Wheelers.
This Steve sees Karen and Ted being a happy married couple.
This Steve sees Holly running around the house giggling.
This Steve hears the Party having the best time of their lives in the basement.
This is the Steve who witnesses two parental figures and six kids (Holly,Nancy and the Party) enjoying their time. He sees them living the American dream
This Steve doesn't feel lonely. He feels closest to home.

Mrs Harrington used to be great mom, until she got obsessed with keeping an eye on her husband.
She's the example that Steve uses when he tries to think of the best way to behave with the kids. She'd been so determined to keep him out of harms way, putting herself between him and his father all the time. She would step between them so often that, instinctively, she would step in front of him whenever anyone raised their voice at him.
She would be so playful too. She was always ruffling his hair, laughing at his complaints. She'd make little jabs, always teasing him, poking him in the ribs. It was always annoying but that was why it was so fun. She never treated him like a dumb kid, more like a friend who just so happened to be a friend.
Steve wants to be just like her, how she was back then. Steve wants kids that he can be playful and annoying with. Steve wants kids that he can make feel so loved that, even if he were to abandon them to stalk his cheating partner, the love he gave them would continue to warm their heart for decades.
Sometimes, Steve wonders if Dustin gets it. His mom is so openly affection, even with Steve, that he has to stop sometimes and wonder if Dustin is just annoyed. Not lovingly annoyed.
It's not until he's in the Upside Down, until Eddie Munson tells him that Dustin practically worships him, that Steve starts to think that maybe, just maybe, his dream has already come true.

... continued (Thanks for reading!)
“I’m gonna ask you one more time, you little shits, and I want an actual answer instead of just you two pointing fingers at each other like toddlers. Where’d you get the booze and whose brilliant idea was it to walk home in the middle of the night instead of, oh, I don’t know, CALLING ONE OF US TO PICK YOUR DUMB ASSES UP?”
There was a muffled scuffling sound coming from the backseat. Eddie glanced back to see Mike and Dustin grappling with each other, Dustin mouthing something and Mike shaking his head violently and trying to get a hand over Dustin’s mouth.
Eddie might have been amused if he didn’t know how pissed off his boyfriend was. These kids knew better than to put their lives at risk like that, and it wasn’t because of the drinking or the midnight walk. This was HAWKINS. Maybe the only place in the world where your odds of coming face to face with a monster made of dead people or tripping into a tear in the fabric of reality and winding up in actual Hell were just about as good as your odds of getting on the wrong side of a bored small-town cop who saw you stumbling along the side of the road in the dark.
Eddie turned fully in the passenger seat to fix the boys with the most intimidating glare in his repertoire. They froze, Mike’s hand hovering just above Dustin’s mouth. “I think your mom asked you a question, kiddos,” he said in a deceptively calm tone that was even scarier than if he’d been yelling. Eddie was a marshmallow, everyone knew that, but sometimes when he was in DM mode or when he was acting on behalf of Steve, he could be pretty terrifying.
Dustin shoved Mike out of his personal space. “We got invited to a party at Dave Peterson’s house and there was so much beer, but we stayed away from the beer, Steve, we weren’t gonna get super drunk and we just wanted to see what it was like. But there was this red stuff…”
“Dustin just handed me a cup of it and said it tasted like Kool-Aid…”
“And it didn’t taste like it had liquor in it, it was just really sweet and it went down smooth, ya know?”
“He drank like five cups of the shit!” Mike blurted, and Dustin swung an arm out, smacking his friend in the chest.
Mike retaliated by hitting back, and then the scuffling had resumed until Steve swerved over to the curb in a screech of tires. “KNOCK IT OFF!” he shouted, spinning around to pin them with a ferocious glare, and they froze for a second time. “I thought you guys were supposed to be geniuses. You trying to tell me you didn’t know there was alcohol in this stuff you were guzzling? And that’s not even REALLY the point. Whose brilliant idea was it to walk home? Do you know what could have happened? Have you FORGOTTEN?”
“…it’s over, though, right?” Mike asked after a beat of silence. Three pairs of eyes swung his way, showing varying degrees of disbelief.
“We don’t know that, Mike. We will NEVER know that,” Steve said, and he wasn’t yelling now but his tone was uncharacteristically hard. “And I don’t want any of you guys to live in fear all the time just waiting for the next thing that wants to kill all of us to come busting out of the ground, but the LEAST we can do? The absolute LEAST? Is to not be fucking stupid. What you did was fucking stupid, and I’m disappointed in both of you. You’re damn lucky I’m not taking you to your parents right now.”
Dustin perked up a bit, although when Steve said he was disappointed Dustin had looked every bit a kicked puppy, hanging head and all. “Thank you, Steve!”
“Yeah, thanks,” Mike said. “I’m not sure my parents would notice but Nancy would have my ass.”
Steve shook his head. “Oh, I didn’t say I’m not telling Nancy. Another party rule, Mike. The first one, remember?”
“Friends don’t lie,” Dustin said, elbowing Mike and shooting him an obnoxious smirk. “So we’re crashing at your place, Steve?”
“Yes, for tonight. I’ll call your moms and let them know. In the morning, we’re going to have a long talk.”
“We got it. Thanks Steve. Thanks Eddie,” Dustin repeated, ever eager to get back in his heroes’ good graces.
“You might wanna hold off on the thanks, little man,” Eddie said. “You’re not getting off as easy as you think. You owe us.”
“Um … owe you?”
“Yup. And I’m already thinking of all the ways you can start to pay your debt.”
“What do you mean?” Mike asked, glancing nervously between the two in the front seat as they exchanged looks and Steve pulled back out on the road.
“My uncle Wayne believed hard labor was the most effective form of discipline, Little Wheeler. I’m of the same mindset. I mean, look how I turned out.” Eddie grinned and spread his arms wide. “I know my van could use a good washing, and I think Stevie’s car has seen better days. The lawn needs mowing, too.”
“Pool needs to be skimmed, whole house is way overdue for vacuuming.”
“Best part?” Eddie added, barely contained evil glee coloring his tone. “Getting it all started as early as possible. Sooner begun, sooner done, right Stevie?”
Steve smiled and reached over to squeeze Eddie’s knee. “Right. Piece of advice, though: Drink a lot of water tonight so the hangover doesn’t interfere with doing a good job. We’d hate for you to have to start over.”
Mike and Dustin groaned in tandem, their heads falling back against the seat of Steve’s car.
“This is all your fault,” Dustin grumbled at Mike.
“MY fault?” Mike returned, his voice cracking. “Right! Because I was the one who was all, ‘taste this, Mike, it’s like cherry Kool-Aid!’”
“And I was the one who said we were better off just walking home! That’s the part they’re pissed about, imbecile!”
…Up front, Steve and Eddie held hands and let the backseat bickering go on unchecked as they headed toward Steve’s house with two of their favorite juvenile delinquents.
