Leaning back in his chair, Steve sighs, running a hand across his face.

It hadn't fully sunk in yet, what he read. He had gone over the email nearing thirty times now, at least, and it still didn't feel real.

But it was real. No matter how hard he closes his eyes and wishes it weren't true, it was.

Each time he looks back at his laptop, the email was still there on the screen.

He could delete it. Steve had more important things to occupy his time as an Avenger. He didn't need to waste his time on pointless stuff like this. But, the threat was credible.

Steve leans forward and rereads the email. Again.

Maybe this time the whole situation would sink in. Maybe he would find a way around this. He hadn't all the other times he read through the message, but he could hope.

I do hope this reaches you well.

I'm reaching out because I have discovered a little secret of yours. And I want to play a game.

You see, I know how you feel about our mutual friend Tony. I don't know how nobody saw it before, it's not like you're great at hiding it. Maybe everyone knows and they are just ignoring it for your sake, out of respect for you. You do inspire that kind of loyalty in people, don't you?

Do you think he loves you back? Oh, that would hurt, wouldn't it? Tony's rejection.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves.

As I hope you can see, I have attached a small sample of the evidence I've gathered on your affections for the great Man of Iron. I'm giving you a week exactly from sending this to come clean about your feelings to him. If I don't receive suitable proof that you have done as I asked within the week, I will release everything I have on you to the world. Wouldn't that be embarrassing?

As he expected, re-reading the email helped him about as much as it did the past hand of a dozen times.

He buries his head in his hands, letting out a groan.

All the videos and picks Hammer sent him were all real. There was no doubt in his mind that Hammer would make good on his threat. The man was still sore at losing his chance at a spot on Skull's cabal.

Really, there was only one solution to all of this. He needs to tell Tony how he feels.

But he can't, he doesn't know the words. Heaven knows he tried before. Maybe he wasn't so clear with his advances. Maybe he could stand to be a little more direct. But the thought of losing Tony over this... It was almost too much to bear thinking about.

So far Tony hasn't responded to any of his attempts. He wasn't sure if Tony just hadn't noticed. Or the man was just trying to spare his feelings by just ignoring him. ...Steve knows which of those he prefers.

He'll be finding out how Tony feels soon anyway. Within a week, Tony will be made aware of Steve's feelings. And he would rather the news come from his mouth and not some newsgroup.

If it comes from the news, people may not believe it, might reject it outright as gossip. The Avengers would probably turn it into one of their running jokes. And it will hurt. Probably more than just telling Tony outright.

Steve nods to himself, having made up his mind. He was going to tell Tony himself. Right now. Rip that Band-Aid off now.

Gathering up all the courage he could muster, he gets up out of his chair and makes his way to Tony's workshop.

During the elevator ride, Steve gives himself pep-talk after pep-talk.

He could do this.

He knew he could.

Talking to Tony was easy.

The man was his best friend.

It wouldn't be hard to tell him how he feels.

It'll be worth it. Even just to know where they stand.

He's got this.

By the time he's reached the workshop, his palms are sweaty and he feels just a little nauseous.

He finds Tony bent over one of the armour's gauntlets, working away deep within its wiring.

Before he can even knock, Tony turns and smiles at him. "Steve!"

"Uh, hey," he says, mustering up a smile for Tony.

He could do this.

"I love you," he says.

Steve sucks in a deep breath and closes his eyes. Waiting for the reaction.

Tony laughs softly. He hears Tony picking his tools back up, returning to his work on the armour. "Yeah, I know," the man says. "I love you too, bud."

Oh.

The breath he was holding leaves in a sad, little wheeze.

His heart breaks in his chest.

"Well, I... uhhh, just came around to say hi, so." He does his best to smile at Tony, ignoring how weak and wobbly it feels. "Yeah. I'll get out of your hair,"

Tony gives him a look, brows pinched together in confusion. He could see the questions forming in man's eyes.

"I'll see you later, Tony," he says making his retreat.

That night, Steve finds himself in bed, looking over the files Hammer sent him.

He sees what Hammer meant by he was kind of obvious.

It was a little embarrassing just how obvious he was, actually. He watches the video of himself making eyes at Tony from across the battlefield. Distracted as he had been, he'd nearly missed Attuma's swing, barely ducking in time.

Watching the video, he sees something he hadn't been able to catch in the moment. The sheer look of terror on Tony's face followed swiftly by relief so strong that even in the armour you could see breath he let out, the sag of his shoulders as he let himself slump, boneless in the suit's hold. He'd never seen Tony react so viscerally before. He never had as strong of a reaction to the other Avengers.

Curious, he goes through the other videos sent in the email, watching Tony reactions.

A smile grows on his face.

Maybe there was still hope. He could give this one more chance.

Maybe he just wasn't speaking the right language with Tony.

Maybe it was time to try something different.

Steve lays across the couch, binging one of his favourite shows, soft balls of colourful merino wool scattered about around him.

Red, white, blue, brown, silver, grey, black, yellow, and gold. All the colours he needed for his project.

He didn't expect to find as many shades of colours as he did in the craft store. It was almost overwhelming, the variety. But, he knew his goal. Knew the exact colours he wanted. He spent so long looking through all the different options, comparing the shades, feeling the different wools. Before long, the excessive variety wasn't as intimidating but exciting.

A few hours later, he had returned to Avengers Tower with several bags of wool. Likely more wool than he needed for his project.

Steve set himself up on the couch and got to work. With only six days to go, he didn't have much time. Thankfully it doesn't take him too long to get back into the familiar rhythm and is soon making quick progress.

A knock at his door distracts him from his work. "Come it!"

Tony walks in with a huge smile, tapping away at something on his tablet. "So, the rocket boots were a no..." Tony says, "but hear me out, what about..." The man's eyes widen at the sight of all the bags of wool around the couch. "...That's a lot of wool."

"It is," Steve says, lips curling up into a smile.

"You knitting sweaters for an entire baseball team?" Tony jests, setting his tablet down on the coffee table to look through some of the bags.

"Not exactly. No."

Tony gives him a curious look. "So, what are you making then?"

"It's a surprise," Steve says. A good one he hopes.

"Steeeeeeve" Tony groans, flopping onto the couch beside him. "I need to know!"

"It'll be done by the end of the week, Tony," Steve says. "You can know then."

"Do I at least get a clue?"

"Nah," Steve says.

He wanted Tony's first impression of the work to be of the final project. It had taken him so much planning, just to get it to where he was happy with it.

Steve wanted to create something that Tony could understand. That he could relate.

Hopefully, he would look at Steve's work and see the love and dedication in every stitch. He would understand the message Steve was trying to convey.

Tony sighs beside him. "Do you at least have snacks?"

The team give him odd looks when he brings his knitting to movie night. He sets his bags of wool down by the side of the couch.

Tony drops down into the spot beside him, eyeing all the wool around him. "Trying to replace me?" the man jokes, nudging Steve's shoulder.

"No, no," Steve says. "I just-"

Tony holds up his hand silencing him. "It's fine. Now I know what's it like being on the other side of a work-binge." Tony says, laughing. "It's nice to see you so passionate, Steve."

Clint opens his mouth to say something, but Tony cuts him off. "-other than work, it what I mean. Of course." the man says, averting his eyes.

Clint rolls his eyes and reaches for the popcorn.

Natasha walks in with Sam, her eyes falling to Steve's project. She squints at it, trying to work it out. He can see when it clicks, a slow, soft smile appearing on her face.

Steve returns her smile, giving a small nod. He trusts her to keep his secret.

They settle down into their spots, getting ready for the movie. A peaceful quiet falling over the room.

Thor strides in from the kitchen, with what looked to be no less than twelve bowls of popcorn in his arms. "I have procured the snacks!" he says.

Clint cheers, reaching for another bowl of popcorn. Natasha elbows him in the ribs. "Finish the one you've got first." She says.

"Awww..."

Steve laughs softly, taking up his needles and continuing with his project.

Steve winces as Tony pulls another slither of metal out of his back. He lays on his front across the medical bed, working on one of the sleeves of his project to distract himself from the pain.

"Almost done," Tony promises, giving his shoulder a comforting rub. "Maybe a couple a dozen left?"

"It's okay. At least I've got my knitting," he jokes, giving Tony a small smile.

Tony is silent for several heartbeats. The man lets out a rough breath, sad and tired. "I guess it could be worse."

"It could have," Steve agrees. "But it wasn't. The armour protected me."

Another silence.

"How about we go get some ice cream after this?"

"Sounds great, Tony."

"Great."

"I-... might bring my knitting along," Steve says, feeling his face heat. "Just a heads up." there were only four days left. He needs to get his kitting done. He was nearly at the halfway point.

Tony laughs for the first him in hours.

Steve smiles, proud of being able to do that.

There are less than 24 hours left.

Steve is tired. His hands are sore. He's had next to no sleep the past three days, just to make sure he'll finish on time. It'll be a near thing, but he knows he can make it.

It'll be worth it.

He knows it will.

Steve knits on.

It was done. He did it. With seven hours to spare.

Steve wraps the onesie with care in a metallic red wrapping paper, taking his time to get all the creases neat and crisp. Tying it with a gold ribbon.

Done, Steve hugs the gift close to his chest. He hopes this works.

Steve quickly makes his way over to Tony's workshop, heart in his throat.

He knocks on the door and enters. "Tony, I made you something," he says.

Tony eyes the present excitedly. "Would it happen to be your super-secret knitting project?"

"Yes, it is," he says. "I made it for you."

"Well," Tony says, making grabby hands at his present. "Give it over." His grin, wide and bright.

Steve hands it over and steps back, watching Tony open the gift. He didn't want to miss a moment of this.

Tony's eyes widen as he takes in the gift, pulling it from its wrapping and unfolding it so he could get a better look.

The onesie he had made Tony was an exact replication of the armour, perfect down to the stitch.

What he couldn't get across in words and actions, he hoped he could get across in art. In his knitting.

If he were to go on Tony's expression, awestruck and teary-eyed, he would say the message got across.

"I love you," Tony breaths, repeating Steve's earlier words. "This... You... Steve... Please, tell me this means that-"

"I love you too," Steve says.

Tony laughs, pulling Steve into his arms. "All this time..." He whispers into Steve's neck. "I'm sorry. I didn't think-"

"We're here now," Steve says, pulling back, smiling at Tony.

Tony cups Steve's cheeks in his hands, caressing them softly. "I love you. And I'm going to let you know, every day, to make up for all the times you questioned if I'd ever love you back," Tony leans in, pressing his lips to Steve's in a gentle kiss. Steve leans into it, his heart beating fast.

With a huge grin on his face, Steve attached the photo of him and Tony together and sent off the email. A little under two hours to go on the clock.

He shuts the laptop and heads over to the couch where Tony lay under several blankets.

Steve carefully slides and the blankets and curls up against Tony's chest.

With a satisfied sigh, he shuts his eyes and falls asleep.

Written for the @stonylovessteve event.

Summary: Steve can always sense him, long before Tony enters his cave. It makes his blue scales tremble and his big wings flutter in excitement. Tony brings light and warmth into this musty hideout he calls home. And food. And while they may be as odd a couple as you can imagine, that won't stop them from bantering and cuddling just like anyone else.

SNIPPET SUNDAY #008

From Iron & Sapphire

At first, Steve heard him. It was the familiar sound of light footsteps on hard stone that made its way through the dark cave and to his ears. Steve heard the light tapping when the soft soles of his leather boots touched down and when he flexed his feet, and Steve heard the faint rustling of his clothes. What he didn't hear was rattling chainmail or metallic plates noisily sliding upon each other. He was unarmoured. A rarity for the very man who had established a reputation in the surrounding lands as the Iron Knight.

His scent was the next thing Steve perceived. Warm and familiar, it rose to his nostrils and Steve lifted his head from his forefeet and stuck it up in anticipation to take in as much of the smell as possible. Unlike what his name suggested, he didn't smell of iron at all. It was much more the smell of parchment and candle wax, mixed with a hint of smoke and warm leather treated with walnut oil. An earthy and tart scent, resembling rosemary, covered all of it, and the scales on Steve's back began to quiver with delight as he got up. For him, this was the most beautiful fragrance he had ever smelled and catching only a whiff of it in his barren cave never failed to excite him.

It took a little longer for him to appear at the entrance to the cave. At first, Steve only spotted the flickery glow of fire, its warm light dancing along the edged rock. It bobbed up and down in rhythm with his steps and gradually made its way into Steve's cave. Then a shadow formed, sneaking across the rough stone of the walls, and even in the distorted silhouette, Steve could make out the all too familiar jawline.

Finally, he stepped into the open stone arc and revealed himself in all his glory. In the light of the torch he carried, Steve could see the smile spreading across Tony's face as he caught sight of Steve.

"Hey big guy," Tony said, deftly hopping down the boulders that formed a rough stairway from the entrance down to the cave's floor. Steve shook his massive body, briefly unfolded his big wings and gave an enthusiastic snort.

"Yeah, I've missed you too," Tony said, still grinning, and shoved the torch into a crack in the cave wall. The fire brightened most of the spacious cave and was refracted on Steve's scales. For a while, Steve gazed in fascination at the play of colours on the wall beside him, where blue reflections of light moved with him.

So it's fine. It's not as if anyone was ever going to find out his secret anyway...

As an age-old vampire he's seen a lot of things in his life, but nothing has ever confused him as much as the bubbly Starbucks barista Tony. They meet by chance and Steve stays. He falls for him, even though he knows he shouldn't, and together they explore modern New York, while Steve tries to hide his true nature from Tony, afraid that he would send him away if he knew the truth.

To safely retrieve the data that led to its creation and keep the city safe in the process, they have to take a very subtle approach. The man-- Jack Marshall-- has an eye for hunks and a tendency to get vulnerable with them. The team could use this to their advantage, if they have the right assets.
