I just said this in a reply, but more concise genre thought: This is the only medieval fantasy novel I've ever read where it's an EARLY -- as in Dark Ages, 600-1100 AD -- medieval fantasy (hilarious genre implications) and it's an incredible ride. I keep telling friends it's like reading Pratchett and catching the puns and references and entire retellings and knowing you've missed stuff that's going to suddenly become clear 10 years from now while you yell.

#i assume Tolkien-inspired Medieval Fantasy (modern genre) immediately cross-pollinated with Arthuriana and gave birth to many tiny knights #already in full plate armor #ready to have an affair and consider witches a social evil #I love Arthuriana too!! but more as a spectator i guess? #with Old English I've had my hands in its proverbial guts a couple times. we have something weird and special. #and i'm glad to see its storyworlds (among others) out in the wild #astro lotr

Sooo this is random, but I would love to hear your in-depth thoughts on ChrissyxEddie?!

This doesn't feel random at all to me specifically, anon, becaue I've actually been playing around with my Chrissy x Eddie fic I Might Be Great Tomorrow again recently, haha. The hold they still have on me!

I don't think I could actually articulate my thoughts on why they unhinge me better than I did at the time though, so I hope you don't mind links, but:

They're narrative foils and opposites attract!

They compliment each other in both being performers, but with different intents - Chrissy performs to hide, while Eddie performs to be heard! Obsessed with that!

They're a sandbox crush which doesn't get left behind with childhood as they get older!

They just offer so much narrative potential!

Plus Joseph and Grace both just had real chemistry, and there is a genuine drought of that in current TV.

You know I really do not need Jeremiah Arkham to be Black Mask at any time ever. Someone’s gotta fill the niche of mental health professional who is 100% not a supervillain. A guy whose evildoing comes only as an example of what a psych ward can do to you if they just choose. 

The tension of knowing he started out extremely dedicated and genuinely wanting to help people, seeing him victimized and bullied by rogues in his care until even the last shreds of professionalism that held place of his already run down empathy wear out, and despite being sympathetic to this hopeless state being nonetheless nauseatingly horrified when he turns to abusing his patients because in his position he can just do that and hypothetically could have chosen to do that over anything,

is way better to have in there to work with Batman’s exploratory themes of power, justice, corruption and institution, mental illness, and ‘Society’ ect ect

than just saying “and then he snapped too much so now he’s in a legacy costume and a straight jacket too.” 

No hate to my other villains who have lost their licenses. Some of those guys are some of my favorite rogues, and I love them dearly, but we need one uncostumed one. 

(Yes, I am arguing that something from a giant superhero franchise should not have another costumed villain because themes, as if costumed villains is not the whole genre. I am also the sort of person who gave up on No Game, No Life after reading more volumes than I’d care to admit, because I got sick of wading through the gross parts waiting for them to tackle the subjects of debilitating phobias, isolation, codependency, and family that I thought were promised to me before realizing that was never gonna happen. Sjdjdjff wow, so many details about Cassian that had already supposedly been established (his birth-father's death on Carida etc) that I'd forgotten about, and I'm looking at his Wookiepedia page for details Andor supposedly gives about him and imagining the editors having to be like

I'm. Really going to have to come down on the side of the folks who are like 'wow cool two guys called Cassian Andor who look like That existed simultaneously in the SW universe at the same time with totally different personalities and backstories!'

actually one of the reasons i love NOPE and why it resonated with me so much is that one of its core themes/metaphors is the nature of spectacle and the act of consumption, both figurative and literal, the impulse to gawk at horrible things, revel in witnessing something despite- or even because- it is depraved, and examination of the position of being what is witnessed, being consumed, being exploited, to have you and your suffering hungrily looked at, but not seen, and, well,
