Well, this ficlet is for @historyandqueershenanigans, who inspired me to finally write a little something based off of this post I made a bit ago. Thanks, Thyme!
“You’re brooding, Lucienne.”
Jerked from her reverie, Lucienne blinks and refocuses on Dream as they pace side by side en route to the throne room. “Oh—it’s nothing, my lord.”
“There is no ‘nothing’ where you are concerned.”
Lucienne knows a compliment when she hears one, and she smiles slightly. “Well, it’s maudlin, at least.”
Dream is silent in that way of his that pulls responses like magician’s scarves from those around him.
So Lucienne continues, “I was only thinking on the limitations of the human form I take now. When I was your raven, I…enjoyed perching on your shoulder as we went on our way toward meetings. This”—she gestures up and down the passageway—“reminds me of those times. It’s one of the things I miss,” she finishes quietly.
After another few steps, Dream says, “You always have the option to resume your avian shape.”
“I know. That wasn’t what I meant, not exactly. After all, feeling is such a different business in a human body. I only wish there could be a comparable position while in this form. That is all.”
She glances over at Dream and sees the thoughtful set of his mouth. Then he comes to a halt. “I believe that can be arranged.” And then he pivots, presenting his back to Lucienne.
Lucienne lifts an eyebrow. “My lord?”
Dream turns his head to regard her over his shoulder. “Lucienne,” he says, and she catches a flash of amusement in his fathomless eyes, “surely the librarian of the entire collective unconscious is familiar with the concept of a piggyback ride.”
Lucienne props one hand on her hip, incredulity and mirth bubbling up inside her. “You’re serious?”
“Whenever am I not?”
For a moment, Lucienne hesitates. Physical contact is not something Dream bandies with frivolously: every touch carries weight; every outstretched hand is the outcome of a deliberation. That Dream would offer her this—she knows it’s no flippant gesture. From Dream, this is a well-measured and considered action, his best effort to fulfill her wish and perhaps extend to her any comfort she might be seeking from him.
When Lucienne pauses, it is partly because she’s concerned with appearing undignified, yes, but more so because she wants to take the time to recognise in full what Dream’s offer is: a gift, a display of affection that is, for him, a shouted declaration.
So it is with a warm heart that Lucienne loops her arms over Dream’s thin shoulders and feels him hoist her legs around his hips. He takes a moment to settle her, check that she’s secure, before he continues down the passageway.
Lucienne has not pressed this close to him in some time. He smells good, as he always does, clean and strong, like a mountain spring. With a small, quick movement—ineffably birdlike—Lucienne tucks her nose into the curve of Dream’s neck and shoulder. His wild hair tickles the side of her face. His hands are solid beneath Lucienne’s knees and he was not wrong, actually—the sense of anchoring, of closeness and connection, is not dissimilar to what she felt as a raven riding on his shoulder. She attunes herself to his gait, lets the rocking soothe her.
“Well, this is very nice,” Lucienne remarks.
She can feel the pleased rumble of Dream’s response. “You think so? Good.”
The two of them are drawing near to the throne room. Only a short stretch of passageway remains, but Dream shows no indication of planning to set Lucienne down.
Alarmed, Lucienne says, “Surely you’re not going to carry me into the meeting like this!”
“Why should you concern yourself with what they think? They’re only a delegation from Glaumora. You care little for their kind.”
“Indeed so; their snobbery is astounding. But it might negate our professionalism.”
Dream is unable to shrug with Lucienne aboard, but she senses the spirit of it anyway. She sighs, and the sound turns into a reluctant chuckle. “Oh, if it doesn’t matter to you. They have different standards of physical contact, anyway.”
They are almost upon the door to the throne room when Lucienne says, “I want to thank you, my lord. For hearing me.” And holding me. Lucienne pauses for a moment then adds, softly, “Thank you, Dream.”
Lucienne uses Dream’s names in much the same way Dream handles his touches: always as a well-measured and considered action. Dream knows this quality of hers just as well as Lucienne knows his. His acknowledgment is wordless, only the gentle tap of one finger against her knee. It makes Lucienne smile.
She says, “Shall we go in?”
Dream adjusts her one final time; in his grasp, Lucienne always has been and always will be safe. “We shall. Will you open the door, please?”
Lucienne reaches forward and grasps the ornate handle, and, together, Lucienne and Dream enter the throne room.

i love reading about the uncanny because the whole thing of it is everything seems fine, but there's just something that's not quite right, and i love it.
example, once of my favorite characterizations of The Mayor from LMK in fics is in Sunbreak. He looks like a normal human, but his smile is a bit too wide, the skin around it a bit too white because of how strechted it is. He moves a bit too stifly to be considered normal and there's just something not quite right about the way the talks. Sure, he looks human, but there's so many little details about him that makes he look just a bit off. Just enough to make you unsure if he actually is a human or something else.

it's no longer wip wednesday
buuuut we need to restart somewhere! last week I'd been tagged by @thequeenofthewinter so I'm just going to go ahead and say that I'm cashing it in this week 😌
another day, another Skyrim snippet - only this one gets a little hot as it goes. nothing more than suggestive language/musings for now, but buyer beware and all that.
Tumblr media
Surely, it must have been the mead.
Something about the sweetness of it, the honey that lulled the senses, the tinge of spice at the very end. The way it swirled about in the tankard, a drop spilled over her fingers when a joke had been too bawdy to handle and she had laughed a tad bit too hard. It must have been the mead, her eyes filled with happy tears, hand coming up to cover her mouth when her giggles became much too embarrassing.
The feeling still lingered when the room quieted down, a slump of shoulders, deep satisfied breaths, bottles clinking together as they were pushed across the table, a reward to the storyteller for a job well done. Amusement still pulled at the corners of her mouth when she licked the mead off her fingertips, one and then the other, it seemed to taste all the better now, like good humors had seasoned it some. Her little endeavor nears its end when she gives her index finger the softest of suckles, only to find that a string of pearlescent liquid ran down her palm, making its way to the tip of her pinky, not enough time to catch the droplet that snuck its way between her breasts. A sticky mess to deal with in the morning, she huffs in annoyance as she scans the table for the dish rag she knew had to be around here somewhere.
She looks up in hopes that her little mishap had gone unnoticed, pointer finger still resting against her bottom lip, and while most of the other Companions had carried on with their conversations and merry making, one stares openly at her, a slight furrow to his brow, lips parted and gaze trailing from her cleavage to her lips and back again.
Farkas takes a deep breath and she follows suit, falters right at the end like there was not enough air in the hall when he gives the most wolfish of smiles, tongue gliding from one pointy canine to the other. She is not the only one to be caught off guard, his moment of reverie broken when icy blue eyes meet her sunny yellow ones, a clash neither would ever tire of but had yet to find the words to say it.
It must have been the mead, she had never been one to handle her drink very well, it felt like everything had changed the moment she looked at him and understood exactly what it was that went through his head. There was a heat to it, not like embers on the forge or the midday sun, like sore muscles after a good fight, like an embrace after danger has passed; like bright red skin when you are caught staring with too much desire in your eyes. It is more than enough to send a shiver down her spine, the kind she has never quite felt, a different type of danger, a new kind of apprehension.
Instead of cold fear she finds viscid warmth, a daze that seems to last forever and she makes no effort to get away from. Instead she repays in kind, suddenly lost between his handsome features and the trail of hair on his chest that disappears under the collar of his shirt, leaving far too much to the imagination.
Imagination, that she had aplenty, and there was no use denying that he figured often in her thoughts. Sweet, caring Farkas, arms always open wide to hold her, a heart that made Jorrvaskr a home no matter how long she had been away. Strong, brutish Farkas, arms always at the ready to pick up a sword, the heart of a predator who knows not what it is to be anything but.
Sweet, caring Farkas, she found herself yearning to speak to him after her journeys, to have him tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear, to rest against his chest while they chatted the hours away when the hall became too noisy and their heads too heavy. Strong, brutish Farkas, no one she would rather have by her side in a fight, no fiercer defender, no one better to pry open stubborn vials and lift heavy crates of equipment.
Rarely did she allow those thoughts to meet somewhere in the middle, sweet, brutish Farkas holding her in a tight embrace, strong, caring Farkas carrying her in his arms. Sweet, brutish Farkas, looking down at her with a soft smile, a hand gently cupping her face as he thrust harder, deeper, she will be sore in the morning and would not have it any other way. Strong, caring Farkas, hands firmly planted on her buttocks as he held her up against the wall of some dusty tavern, eyes trained on her to gauge her pleasure.
Quickly she had learned it was best not to wander, the halfway point a deliciously dangerous one, such improper thoughts to have towards a man who had shown her nothing but friendship and kindness. But it had not been all, had it? She may have pretended otherwise, she may have looked the other way, but whatever this bubbling feeling was that rested just below the surface, he had felt it just the same.

Pretty Fangs: Mathias’ Crest
Time for the next installment of this series, taking place not too long after the Introduction! This will be in the ‘Sunbreak Gala Arc’ as I’m gonna call it!
Summary: Mathias gets an invitation and knows its time to make sure everyone knows who Pearl belongs to. Pearl gets a lesson in branding.
Tags For This Part Are: Vampire Whumpee, Obedient/Conditioned Whumpee, Human Whumper, Affectionate/Touchy Whumper, Pet Whump, Semi-Institutionalized Pets, Branding, Burns, Crying, Dehumanization, It/Its used in a dehumanizing way, Possessive Behavior, Whumper POV
Tell me if I forgot anything!
— — —
Mathias’ nails tapped against the table, reading over the invitation once again. He knew it would be coming sooner or later but now that the confirmation of the Sunbreak Gala’s date was here, it suddenly dawned on him that he had work to do.
Two months and three days. Simultaneously too close and not close enough.
He’d showcase Pearl there of course, make his demonstration of his skill in training vampires, but this time it wasn’t for selling his product. He was keeping Pearl after all, so perhaps this was more so convincing more to his cause. Getting vampires out of the streets and shelters and into homes. Showing them what lovely pets they made and how much happier they were like that. Show that if they were taken in and cared for, then no one would ever be attacked by a starving street vampire again.
There were still many that opposed the idea. But Mathias was nothing if not patient. He would make them come around, it was only a matter of when, not if.
Two months and three days until he could show off his lovely pet. He needed to solidify his ownership so nobody got any ideas. And what better way than having a permanent mark on it?
Mathias hums and gets to work. He's fortunate that he has the materials already, having branded a pet before. A pet that was no longer around unfortunately, but no matter. This one would not turn out the same. He was careful this time. He learned from his mistakes.
There was a fireplace in the basement. Mathias places the branding rod in there, waiting for the metal to heat up until it was finally ready, then calls his pet down.
Immediately, he can hear the click of heels as it gets up from the pillow it was kneeling on and descends into the basement. Typically it wasn’t down here unless for training but when he finally sees its face when it reaches the bottom, it shows no fear. A flicker of confusion perhaps, after all it had completed its training quite some time ago, but wasted no time kneeling in front of Mathias.
Mathias crouches down, smiling as those pretty red eyes met his own. He reaches over and begins to unbutton its shirt as he speaks. “I bet you’re pretty curious why we’re down here, aren’t you?”
“Did I do something wrong?” Pearl asks earnestly. Mathias chuckles, pausing from his task to gently cup its cheek.
“Nothing at all.” Mathias tells it. “But there’s something important that needs to be done. Tell me, Pearl, who is your owner?”
“You are.” Pearl answers without hesitation.
“And that’s never changing.” Mathias assures it before it can worry. It softens at the news, and Mathias coos. “I’ll always take care of you. But Pearl, have I ever taken you out in public?” Pearl shakes its head. “So you see, not everyone knows that. And we wouldn’t want any confusion, do we?”
“Of course not. I’m yours, Sir.”
Mathias nods along. “That’s why we need to make sure everyone knows. You have a collar, of course, but what if something happened to it?”
Pearl’s eyes go wide, horrified at the idea.
“Just a hypothetical.” Mathias tells it. “It’s unlikely but I like to be prepared for anything. So in the event that somehow that does happen, we need to be prepared. That’s why I’m going to brand you.”
Pearl may be one of the most well-trained pets Mathias has ever had but just for a moment, fear flashes across its face. Fear of pain is natural of course, but Pearl doesn’t run. It doesn’t even move an inch as Mathias finishes unbuttoning its shirt.
The old Pearl would’ve. Mathias cannot help but smile at the progress.
He spreads the now open shirt out before reaching up to stroke its hair. Slowly, the tension bleeds out of its shoulders ever so slightly. Mathias hushes them and they shut their eyes.
“Pearl, my precious, don’t worry. I know it sounds new and scary— and I won’t lie to you, it will hurt— but I’ve done this before.” He continues to pet it, watching as it opens its eyes and sees nothing but trust. “I’ll take care of you as I always have. It’ll heal slowly but I’ll be there every step of the way, ensuring that it heals as it should. You don’t need to do anything but relax as I take care of you. Doesn’t that sound good?”
Pearl nods slowly but Mathias can tell it’s genuine. He pets it for another minute before drawing his hand away to trace along its chest before stopping at a suitable place. The middle of its upper chest should do. A little below the collar bone but should still be easy to see provided Mathias dresses it with the right outfit. He’s already combing through what it could wear, not just for the healing process but for the Sunbreak Gala. He wants to make it clear to everyone that his Pearl is not for sale.
Mathias nods to himself, setting it in stone. “Close your eyes.” He tells Pearl, and it obeys immediately. Since he can still see remnants of fear, he adds, “Breathe deeply. It’ll only take a couple of seconds.”
Pearl’s chest rises and falls. Vampires don’t truly need to breathe to survive but in his research, Mathias has found that they experience deep discomfort if they don’t. They’re interesting creatures; Mathias would love to post all of his information for the world to see one day, but he’s never been good with technical writing. It bores him.
That aside, Mathias goes to retrieve the branding rod. As he carefully positions himself so the brand will be exactly where he wants it, Pearl stiffens, feeling the heat radiate off of it. But again, it does not run. Like a good pet, it stays exactly where it is, putting complete trust in Mathias.
He smiles. “Stay completely still so I can ensure it forms properly. It’ll take a few seconds but then it’ll be all over, alright, Precious?”
Pearl nods jerkily. Mathias takes that as good of a time as any and only a second later, presses the brand against Pearl’s skin.
Pearl holds out for all of one second before letting out a series of hoarse, pained screams. Mathias holds his ground until he knows it’s okay to stop and pulls away, discarding the rod on the ground as Pearl collapses with a sob.
Mathias reaches forward, steadying his pet and carefully bringing it closer into his embrace, though makes sure he doesn’t make contact with the brand by keeping it on its side. Pearl’s head rests on his shoulder, and Mathias can both see and feel the flood of warm tears falling down its face and soaking into his shirt.
Mathias whispers reassurances, telling Pearl exactly how good it did. Pearl whimpers, shaking like a wet dog, and Mathias can’t help but be reminded of just how pretty Pearl looks when it cries. How glossy those bright red eyes of it looks, how red and puffy its face gets, how much Pearl leans into Mathias like it would fall apart if he let go or wasn’t there at all.
Which is true. Pearl would likely be in some dirty, overcrowded pound if it wasn’t for Mathias. But here he is, branding it to make sure it will stay with him forever, and promising to pamper it even more than he already does. It’s a blessing, really. To be in its position.
Pearl, of course, has learned this and never fails to express its gratitude. Mathias can almost forget his previous, ungrateful and bratty vampire he had planned to keep before it.
But that doesn’t matter. Because Pearl is here and oh so beautiful and will be here forever. For all Mathias knows, it might outlive him. Vampires stick around for a long time, but they’ll cross that bridge when they get to it.
“It’s over,” Mathias assures it as Pearl whimpers and sobs in his arms, “And you did so good for me. I’m so very proud. Don’t worry, I have plenty of burn cream, you’ll be just fine.”
His eyes trail down to the brand. It needs a lot of healing to go but even now it looks… Perfect. Mathias has to stop himself from reaching out and touching it. But now Pearl’s skin bears the symbol of a snake eating the sun— his family crest— and Mathias can’t help but smile.
All his. Forever.

And that’s it for this one! Hope you enjoyed, it’s only gonna get juicer from here!

BACKGROUNDS

CHEYANNE --------
Cheyanne Villanova was a rowdy country girl born and raised on Earth. Before joining the Exodus Program, she'd never even been off-planet before. The training was rough, but she handled it; her brother... Not so much. A fact that she never let him forget.
Her placement on the Exodus Green was a momentous occasion. Her brother was mortified to discover that he hadn't been selected. Cheyanne, being the optimistic person she was, believed she could pull strings to allow her twin to join the crew as a civilian ride-along.
However, the Darkness did not care much for their plans and hopes. The Exodus Green was launched on a hail-mary out of the system in an attempt to flee the coming Collapse. Shay knew her brother was likely dead. But so would she be soon. She welcomed her death with open arms...
Tumblr media
CLANCY --------
Clancy Villanova was a shrewd man, deeply interested by mathematics and studying data. His dream was to join the likes of the Ishtar Collective or Braytech as a researcher. Knowing their recruitment requirements were quite strict, Clancy studied and published many theses for many years to catch the eye of some enterprising employee of his favored organizations... To no avail, unfortunately.
So when the Exodus Program began recruiting for colonization efforts outside the Sol System, Clancy jumped at the chance to put his substantial intellect to use for the betterment of humanity. His sister had already passed the trainings and was accepted for the Exodus Green crew. Clancy felt that he had a fair chance and threw his hat in the ring as well...
But once again, his endeavors met with failure.
Even as his sister reassured him that she would find a way to get him a place on the crew, even as a civilian colonist, Clancy fell into a deep depression and withdrew from his sister. He had resigned himself to the fact that he would lose his sister beyond the system and would fail in every attempt he made to leave his mark on history...
As the Collapse rose to a fever pitch around him, Clancy made a mad-cap attempt at infiltrating the Exodus Green and stowing away aboard the ship. He succeeded! He still had a great fate to fulfil, he felt it in his bones. This apocalypse would not be the end for him...
WAKE --------
Shay and Cy Vi awoke in the Distributory as all their people did. Mara Sov had saved them from oblivion, though they didn't know that yet. They had been given a chance to flourish in this new space... And flourish they did.
When the time came for Mara to take her people and leave the Distributory, the twins fell in with their Queen, ever loyal to her and her alone.
In the Reef, Shay became a great warrior of the Awoken people. Recognized by royalty as a powerful fighter, and loved by the people as a stalwart defender. On the frontier was Cy, one of Uldren Sov's most trusted operatives and a dear friend.
Though they always worked apart, Shay and Cy would regularly meet to discuss their recent travails and exploits, relishing in each other's victories and cringing together at their defeats. For many centuries, Shay and Cy served the Awoken people, gaining much repute for their deeds.
But as the Reef Wars heightened and the Fallen grew more bold in their attacks against the Awoken, it became obvious that the tides were shifting in their enemies' favor. And a key location to survey was the Old Russian Cosmodrome, the lair of the House of Devils.
The pair were given covert codenames to hide their identities: Claros and Clara, Fireteam Vita. Using Cabal-themed names seemed a good idea to mask the Awoken's presence in the area. Their normal identifiers were held in the Reef and they were granted scarlet coins that bore their codenames only.
This covert mission together was ill-fated. It was there they found their end, their bodies lost in the Russian winter.
RISE --------
The twin Ghosts Artemis and Apollo always wanted to find fellow twins for their Guardians. And when they found the pair of Awoken fighters, their remains laid side-by-side, their fraternal love still strong even in death, the two Ghosts knew their search was finally over.
"Eyes up, Guardians!" Apollo chirped as the bodies finished reforming.
The Hunter shook his head, dust and grime cracking off his armor in chunks. The Titan sat up slowly and looked around, senses dulled but still very much in tune with her surroundings.
"It... Worked..." Artemis almost hummed the words. "They're alive!"
"You don't know how long we've been looking for you!" Apollo swooped in close to the Titan, causing her to recoil slightly. "We're Ghosts... Actually--" He floated backward and nuzzled against Artemis. "--I believe we're now YOUR Ghosts!"
"And you..." Artemis's mechanical eye darted back and forth a bit, clearly agitated. "...you've been dead a long time... So you're gonna see a lot of things you're not gonna understand."
A guttural roar sounded off in the distance, echoing off of the tall, imposing wall to their right. Artemis and Apollo spun around, their eyes flicking across the landscape.
"This is Fallen territory!" Apollo whispers, clearly frightened. "We aren't safe here! We have to get you to the City..."
Artemis floats out toward the wall a bit, thinking. Then she swoops in close to the Hunter. "Hold still." And she vanishes. Apollo vanishes as well, sparkles of Light flickering in the predawn gloom.
"Don't worry, we're still with you!" Artemis's voice sounds within the Hunter's mind. He recoils, reaching up instinctively to his ear, then shakes his head. The two New Lights rise to their feet in unison, looking at each other.
"We need to move, fast!" Apollo urges the pair. "We won't survive long out in the open like this. Let's get inside the wall!"
Old instincts kick in as the Hunter flexes his hands and reaches for the dagger at his waist. The Titan rolls her shoulders, feeling the Arc Light tickle across her fingers. The pair cast a knowing sidelong look at each other, already in sync.
"A bit of live-fire exercise to shake off the gravedirt?" The Hunter's voice cracks several times, but he finishes the sentence before spitting into the sparse grass at his feet.
The Titan smirks, picking up her helmet from where it had lay for decades. "Just need to find me a gun." she rumbles.
FALL --------
Claros crept slowly through the underbrush outside Firebase Hades. The Shadow Legion caravan stomped and grumbled its way through the woods, leaving a brutish trail in their wake. It was like tracking actual rhinos; absolutely no tact. Made him wonder why they were plunging their way through the woods this far from any known outposts... Maybe some kind of secret base tucked in the trees? Or maybe they were setting one up...? He clicked his comms twice. After a beat, two clicks in return. They were both safe to talk freely.
"Either these dudes don't care about being followed... Or they're morons." Claros mused, a smile hinted in his tone.
"Cabal aren't known for their subtlety... Even with a name like 'Shadow Legion', they're not espionage experts at all." Crow's voice sounded almost musical; he was elated to be in the field again. Claros couldn't blame him; easy to forget the pain of loss when you have targets in your sights. Crow continued, "Just as you thought; they're breaking into the clearing now."
"I'll let our welcoming party know to prepare her gifts."
----
Clara leaned against a tree, carving a branch with a fine, curved knife, her helmet on the ground beside her boot. Petra had given the knife to her as a gift for being named Queensguard. Clara could tell that they had history, but tried not to dwell on the absence she felt when she tried to recall any of it. She was sure that both Petra and Mara were irate at their family members getting resurrected by the ball in the sky, but they were textbook Awoken; completely bottled it up and never acknowledged it.
But Clara's instincts with women was as keen as ever; amnesia had done nothing to dull that. She knew that Mara was still brooding over Uldren's new life, even if he did remember his old one. And Petra may as well have a tattoo on her forehead that said "f&^% the Traveler". Gotta sting a bit to put a bullet in a traitor's head only for him to now be one of your Queen's most trusted allies within a faction you didn't even like that much. Clara wondered if--
Two clicks over the comms. She clicked back once. Not ready to talk; she wanted to finish her carving. Just a couple more cuts and...
An Ahamkara skull. An effigy to Riven. Her fireteam slaying the Wish Dragon had never sat right with Clara... But she supposed there'd been nothing for it; Riven was out of control and a major threat to the system. Just a shame that she was the last one of her kind. Almost poetic in how tragic it was...
She tucked the piece into her pocket, kicked her helmet up to her hand, then smoothly slid it over her head. She took a deep breath, then clicked twice over the comms. Two clicks back, then her brother's voice.
"Welcoming party is a go. On your mark, partycrasher."
Arc energy crackled from her fists. Time to slam.
----
Crow eyed the Psions at the head of the group as the Cabal unpacked their cargo in the clearing. No hidden base... Yet. They were likely setting up shop here to make one. We can't have that, can we... Crow snorted slightly at his own reaction. Amanda would've--
He shook his head. Can't think about her right now. Focus on the mission.
Two clicks over the comms. He clicked back twice as he nestled back against his rifle and looked down the scope.
"Partycrasher inbound."
Crow smiled. Moving targets were more fun, and these Cabal would be scattering like scared cats when Clara--
SHCKA-THOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
An explosion blasted through the pre-dusk air as a dervish of Arc energy erupted into the sky across the clearing. Clara landed on top of the Psion Crow had sighted and his scope filled with Light. He swore, recoiling and readjusting to the edge of the Cabal's group. They'd already started running panicked toward the trees, a large group of them lancing gunfire toward the Amplified Titan in their midst...
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH-DOOOOOOOM
Solar Light flashed ahead of the fleeing group as six shots lanced from the darkness, piercing the front few and incinerating the rest in Ignition fire. A searing knife spun through the air, landing at the feet of the leading Psions as they attempted to erect a barrier to protect themselves. The air sparkled with embers as the knife exploded, sending the Psions flying. Crow swore again; he'd not taken a single shot. He couldn't get shown up by these two again...
As he lamented his poor performance, the Hunter saw a lone Psion survivor dipping into the trees, vanishing from sight. Perfect target! He jumped from his perch, stowing his rifle and drawing his Void-charged Shadowshot bow. As he hit the ground, he tossed a smoke bomb in front of him, vanishing into the mist it produced. He flitted from shadow to shadow, the Light in his bow draining fast; he had only one shot.
The Psion left a trail of wreckage behind them as they ran through the underbrush, making Crow's job incredibly easy. He took a running leap up onto a large boulder, sighted down his arrow, and took a single shot blindly into the trees...
A moment went by, but it felt like eons before Crow heard his Deadshot anchor activate.
He dismissed his bow, then casually strode through the wake of the fleeing Psion. Within short order, he found them, trembling on the floor, tethered to the anchor he'd fired, not two feet away. Crow shook his head; he felt bad for the small creature, shuddering in fear and panic, clearly at its wits end... He gently tied the Psion's hands behind its back, then lifted it over his shoulder.
"I hope you're capable of listening to reason." Crow muttered, knowing that the Psion likely couldn't understand him. "This really isn't the way to go..."
And with his prey captured and bound, he made his way back toward the clearing and his allies.

;; me: snapping awake
my favorite relationship kind that i could ever write ties directly into my favorite kind of character to write: a ‘hurt’ person. someone who’s been through something so terrible or so life-changing for the wrong kind of reason, someone who’s suffered or struggled or put through the wringer to be where they are that on some level, they’re dysfunctional and ‘barely human’. where they could be considered emotionally stunted or hard to get along with, or they treat people poorly or act aloof/dangerous/ambivalent. the kind of person who could even be considered toxic on some level just because of their behavior and how they view the world and the people around them, possibly not seeing them as people but just tools, or just trying to get their way because the world wouldn’t let them before, or maybe they’re just unable to open up at all because they’ve been hurt so bad or they’re traumatized and can’t bring themselves to do things most people could do.
and that leads into my favorite relationship in writing: “broken people”. the relationship of two individuals who’ve suffered a lot in some way and find solace in each other. they don’t need to know each other’s history or what they’ve been through, they just want each other. they find comfort in each other, something they can’t find anywhere else, and that bond is so powerful that they would go through hell again to protect it. love, platonic or familial or romantic, that makes the person want to be Better and improve for the other, to be a better person. they might slip up and fall back into bad habits and it might be a long time running before they’re ever in a place that could be considered ‘better’.
my favorite thing to write as of recent, which has been the past few years, is healing. people in terrible places just, slowly getting better and getting away from the traumas and habits that tie them down and hurt them.
and my favorite ship song that fits into all these themes? H.ozier’s “Like Real People Do”.

Discovering Solar
"Okay, I know you like the void better, but this feels good. This feels right, this is mine."
Freija stood in the fiery Light, head rocked back and swaying in place. The thrall she'd punched was long since disintegrated into ash, but the fire remained, and Freija had created her first sunspot.
"I like this one better than Arc. You got suicidal, and not in a good way. It does look like it's supposed to hurt, though."
"Not me," Freija murmured, and she breathed in a draft of hot air, and she settled the fire into her lungs. "This is my home right here, this is nice."
The ghost giggled. "I like it for you. You seem very comfortable."
~~~~
I am trying to come up with one of these for void, but it's very... Meh to me. My best impressions of it have been "it's good" both before and after 3.0, but I can't really come up with anything about it that I found remarkable. I even still run sentinel from time to time. I just miss my fire.
FINALLY
i have (at last!!!) posted my dearly beloved lucienne character study, which i’ve been stewing and sweating over for almost six months (dear reader: this story is less than two thousand words). i’m so fascinated by the way lucienne has essentially lived three different lives, first as a mortal human (presumably—i’m absolutely open to other possibilities but this is the one i went with for this particular fic), then a raven, then as the dreaming’s librarian. this story explores a tiny corner of what that could be like.
For Lucienne had been human once—pure, raw human, not merely dreamstuff moulded into the shape of one.
Some of Morpheus’s ravens, like Matthew, had retained the memories of their previous lives. However, Lucienne and a handful of others whom she had known had chosen not to.
But although her mind might not remember, perhaps her body would.
A study in scars. Or, letting go.
Hahaha okay rant about this amazing fanfic (you probably heard of this one already but still)
So whenever it comes to explaining and writing under my posts I just get lazy but I need to push through this cuz I need to talk
So the fanarts were made for the lmk fanfiction sunbreak, that a lot of you (probably mostly shadowpeach shippers) had read, and it is amazing, I read trough it as fast as my brain let me and as you can see it has pleasantly scratched my brain so much so that I even (attempted) to make fanart for it
Ngl if I wasn't a major pussy I would try to illustrate the whole thing or make covers for each chapter but Im unable to work on something more than 2 hours and I would want those to look good, but good looking art (if I don't mess up) takes 6 hours ughh--- annoying much---
Anyways I'm not good with literature but man is this fix a masterpiece *chefs kiss* its everything its amazing, I was unable to put it down once I started it
Okay i dont think I have the brain capacity to explain how much I worship the writer of this masterpiece @ladygreenfrisbee , so i'm just going to talk about the drawings a tad
So first picture with Red Son and MK its sort of like an au in the fic where the whole lbd plot is somehow nonexistent and after Macaque gets to his sisters domain they settle down and raise the kids together without much of an issue aside from assassinations keep happening and trying not to get in trouble with the heavens
Id like to think that Gongzhu still wouldn't let the court tailors to put any form of red or gold on MKs outfits and only allowed the yellow after when MK was old enough to declare that yellow was his favorite color, but even now she would insist on some form of purple and shadow motives to let others know who the mother is
We also got baby MK and toddler Red Son and sassy LIF and Mac
Third pic with the lion: I don't know what it was or why but I just love general Song so much--- he's a major dickhead but sgvshshsevkdididhr (actually I kinda love all the original characters in this one, from the generals to the old lady in the beginning of the book, (gosh I also wanna draw some scenes from those chapters I loved how Mac and she interacted hshsjsj))
so chapter 34 was probably my favorite so far I re read it about two more times cuz it was amazing to see Macaque being the schemer he is and try to piss of Song lol
Last picture: its a sketch/a wip or whatever (probably not going to finish it but im still putting it there cuz its somewhat decent looking)
Its the part where Wukong remembered of Macaque finally finding him and asking for him to come back to flower fruit mountain.
I tried to make Macaque look more unhinged on this one but since I didn't finish it I dont think its that noticable so fuck that but I also gave him a halo like the saints to symbolise his suffering and what not (thought it looked cool and fitting think whatever you want about it lol)
And that all ((((hollly mother))))
If you read this trough, thank you and congrats👏👏
Hello ! I adore your LMK AU‘s and your writing style. The stories are so captivating and make me excited for the next chapter.
I wanted to ask what your favorite AUs are :) I know you have great taste and I would be grateful if you could share some LMK au/comic/fanfic recommendations with us :))))
Hello! Oh my gosh thank you so so much! That makes me so happy to hear ;-; Thank you!
I got a lot of favorites out there, let me tell you :3 Alright alright~
AU'S:
The King and his Cub By: @theweepingegg : This au is so cute and I love little MK with his Papa~ It's adorable and the humor just has me rolling! Plus the wholesome Father and Son moments + an uncle Macaque?? It's amazing! Literally just melts my heart with every new update.
Cursed Au By: @winterpower98: This Au consumed my life and continues to do so. The drama, the redemption, the growing bond between Wukong Macaque and MK?? I love it alll~ The whole universal set up of this growing Au is so full and wonderful.
Literally, ANY AU that is made by @journey-to-the-au ! This artist just- STEALS all of my attention. They got a lot of different Au's, and so many amazing ideas. There is action and romance and betrayal and platonic love that is so wholesome and sweet and AHHHHH. Taking a long tour through their entire tumblr page is 100% WORTH IT
Very similarly, anything by @rebeltigera! They also have so many different au's that are all AMAZING. Something about their style also- ahhhhh <3 It's so good. I definitely suggest taking a dive into their tumblr too. Their Macaque is honestly probably my favorite version of Macaque!
Forged Faith by @swagginmun Gosh the anxiety but also the pure adoration I have for this particular Au?? Definitely follows a more canon storyline but has one HECK OF A TWIST. The expressions that are done are amazing and I really really can't wait for this one to continue as its current chapter just ended on something INTENSE.
Fan Comics!
Eclipsed Apprentice by @journeytomonkiekid : I've been following this one for a while. I LOVE IT. There are so many talented people in the LMK community and this comic takes an interesting turn to the canon of LMK. Has some great Oc's and the storyline has me hooked! Lots of drama, and redemption, and so far the character growth is *Chef kiss*
Even Rainfall Has Shadows By @linklefr : Another fancomic that takes it's own path and turn from the LMK canon. Oc's are so cute and I just wanna squeeze them! It's really growing to be its own thing! It's got a lot of talk about self-worth and toxic habits and overall overcoming those that the characters need to grow from, and I can't wait to see where it goes!
FANFICS: (I have way too many. My gosh. And honestly if folks have more recommendations, please put them in the comments! Or if you have a story you wrote yourself I would love to read it!) I would mark their Tumblr creators if I knew them, but I don't know all of them ;-; So I'll put the link to the fanfic instead
SunBreak : First LMK fanfic I ever read. It is the rabbit hole that dropped me into loving Macaque and parent Macaque to be more precise~ Goes way off canon and I'm LOVING IT
There May be no such thing as eternity: Possed Wukong- I cannot explain how much possessed Wukong still reaching out to the Macaque and the gang just makes my brain flip~
A Garden Across Our Collar Bone: THIS. Ahhhh- Just bury me with this fanfic in my hand. MK X Red Son and ahhh- Also, ANYTHING this author (PittiedPeaches) writes is GOLD.
Of Blood and Bones: A big inspiration to me and their story is SO GOOD. The angst but also fluff that is slipped in? It's an amazingly sad but wonderful read. And I really love the world-building
Peach Blossoms: I'm a sucker for any Hanahaki disease kind of story and this is everything I wanted and more. This was soooo good and it flowed really well.
Love Team: Ooooh boy this story took me on a roller coaster ride. MY GOSH I never knew what to expect and it always had me on the edge of my seat~
Is this A Monkey-Thing or Dad-Thing?: Any Dad wukong focused fic will just catch my feet and trip me into the pit of the story. Every time. This one is so cute~
Kiss Your Knuckles: This oneshot is soo sooo good! And also horribly tragic. Gosh it just destroyed me! I definitely suggest it!
-Okay this thing is getting long and I'm not even close to saying all the fanfics and such I have read XD There are so many good fanfics out there my gosh. If you have more than you think are amazing please put them in the comments!
it's wip wednesday, my dudes
well this surely is exciting! I've been tagged by @thequeenofthewinterfthewinter to share my latest wip, and while it's technically cheating because it's not exactly the latest, I haven't written proper in a bit - mostly notes, so this is the latest actually readable thing. I'm not going to tag anyone this time around, but hey 👀 if you have a wip 👀 post and tag me in it 👀
ok so, the wip: it's part of a (hopefully) future fic that follows my dragonborn, Murien, as she leaves her old life in Cyrodiil and tries to make something out of it in Skyrim. she joins the Companions looking for combat lessons, and becomes fast friends with a certain ice-brained twin.
Tumblr media
"So, you have family here?" He asked, pushing the mug of mead towards her, her third or fourth tonight. Something told him this should be the last one, that she would not handle another one well - that something being Vilkas, who eyed him from across the room like he was leading a lamb to slaughter. Perhaps he was.
On the other side of the table, Murien caught the tankard with both hands, stubby little things that looked funny wrapped around the cup as she wasted no time bringing it up to her lips. He had to give it to her, corners of his mouth pushing up in amusement, she may be a lightweight, but she surely did not think herself to be.
A couple of seconds later and the tankard laid empty before them, her yellow eyes looking down to where the liquid should be, brows knit together like she had no idea who it had been who had drunk her mead.
"What brought you to Skyrim?" Farkas tried a second time, now catching her attention for once, and her response was half a chortle, half silly wave of a hand.
"Death," she had turned serious for a second, hand slamming down against the wooden table hard enough to make it wobble, the entire room falling silent as her voice echoed.
A tense few moments, Vilkas looked worried, Aela like she would dismantle him into a thousand pieces if he made the girl cry. She held his gaze for what felt like far too long though he could not tell what it was that he saw in her eyes; and then she laughed, laughed like she had just heard the funniest joke told by the most amusing jester, head thrown back as she all but bellowed.
A collective sigh of relief, merrymaking overtaking the ambiance once more, but he knew better than to chuckle along. He knew better, he knew her better, had somehow been the one to figure her out first though he still had but a scant few pieces and was not really the brightest out of the bunch. Murien, on the other hand, oh, she was twice as smart as Vilkas, three times as clever.
He knew, the moment her eyes turned into tiny arcs and the corners of her mouth made dimples on her cheeks, that the drink had gotten the better of her and she needed to clear the air before things became too heavy. Before they looked at her different, before he asked the wrong question again, before some whelp boasted about killing and war and made her cheeks turn red and water pool in her pretty eyes. She hid, like she always did, that part he had not figured out yet but hoped that she would let him, one day. She hid though she did not want to, not really, not from him.
World vs Rise - Multiplayer focused breakdown
This is a crosspost from Reddit. I played some World this morning and had some monster hunter brainrot.
Hi all! So I have about 750 hours on my main characters in both games, and I've been playing them for 2 years now. I have some thoughts on the multiplayer components - what Rise improved on, and what World does better.
I have played base Rise on the Switch and PC, and I played Sunbreak on PC. Meanwhile I played World WITH Iceborne on PC. I played base World on Xbox One in the distant past, no memory of that experience so it shouldn't quality much.
I played both games with a group of friends, and played many many hours doing SOS, lobby, or solo, so I have a good idea of how the multiplayer works.
Anyway let's get down to it.
Story
Tumblr media
World has... much more of a story. I refuse to say that it's "better" but I think the story presentation is much better than Rise's. Iceborne's story progression is more interesting, but I do appreciate how Sunbreak tried to write this story with all the Qurio and Malzeno. I do like Rise's final fight with Malzeno significantly more than Velkhana or Fatalis, but I think I like Shara Ishvalda and Nergigante more than any monster from Rise. As for the characters, they suck ass in both games, Rise has a lot more personality on the surface level but less depth overall and feels less like a large living world. That makes sense from an arcadey, nostalgic experience? I guess I prefer World's story... but I don't prefer playing it.
Multiplayer Story Progression
Tumblr media
Rise DRASTICALLY improved this. In World I often would be forced to start a quest in "expedition mode", then have to leave and reopen the quest my friend could join, which was especially annoying when we were both starting the quest the first time and we'd have to wait for each other. I don't understand why it doesn't allow you to start quests or join them freely. In Rise you can join each other's quests at any point, no matter if there are story cutscenes or what. IMO this is an example of World's immersion getting in the way of a cohesive multiplayer experience.
Additionally, I need to say World has more "annoying" Key Quests. There are a number of quests where nobody will join SOS because you're fighting a Nightshade Paolumu, or a Brachydios, or one of the crappy Zorah Magdaros quests, and that one Velkhana artillery mission.
I believe that this is because the quests have one of these two factors:
You need to change your set for them. Nobody wants to fight Nightshade Paolumu or Brachydios with their normal set because it's too painful. But why would you have a specific set just to join these not very interesting SOS quests? Well, I made a set for Nightshade just because I find it so frustrating that my SOS feed is full of 'em! I should set up for Brachydios as well but honestly I find him annoying to fight even with the right tools, not my favourite.
Time spent on the quest. Velkhana artillery is like 30 seconds with three people, and Zorah Magdaros is about one minute of fighting to ten minutes of downtime so nobody ever wants to join it.
With Rise, there's less of these annoying quests, but you can't CONTROL what quest you are joining on an SOS, which has its pros and cons. I'll go more into that shortly.
Normal Multiplayer Pacing
Tumblr media
I think that Rise is a much, much faster game than World. In base Rise on Switch, you had to run into a match and attack the monster as fast as possible or it'd be dead before your palamute got there. This is mitigated when you're playing with friends, you can take your time and collect as many spiribugs as you want. It's also somewhat mitigated in Sunbreak because the monsters are such heavy hitters that if you DON'T get all the bugs, you're going to faint anyway. I feel like the game is constructed to accomodate for this. That's why monsters in Sunbreak are so tanky and hard hitting, they expect you to go at them with your full arsenal ASAP.
The pacing in World is much slower, which originally drove me insane, but over time I've grown to like it. I think base Rise was great for how arcadey it was, and World is a nice slower paced game. Sunbreak feels... too intense. Like, I'm fighting for my life in every Anomaly quest and even when I rush the match takes a long time.
Joining World SOS quests is nice and easy, you can take your time collecting potions and stuff before hopping in, you can prepare for the specific monster. In Sunbreak if you're playing in a lobby or with friends it's nice and slow there too. If you're SOSing in sunbreak, good fucking luck, more on that now.
SOS Request Changes
Tumblr media
In World, you see all available SOS quests and choose what one you want to do. The pros of this are YOU get to decide if you want to fight Rathalos in the Ancient Forest again. The cons are that it takes longer to join a quest, and the person SOSing may not get any help if they're fighting an annoying monster - see Multiplayer Story Progression section.
In Rise, you don't see what you're joining anymore.
Pros: Faster join time for player, less faffing around in menus, and you can get people joining your quests no matter what they are. People get rewards no matter how late they join. Great especially for Switch players with the higher playercount.
Cons: You can't choose what you're doing. You can't see what quests are active, how long they've been going, or how many players are in them. Often I find that I join a quest and it's OVER already and I'm booted back to the village. Often I choose a category and there are no quests at all.
Uber Mega Con: You have to INDIVIDUALLY SEARCH Event quests??? Hello???? Why can't I join a random event quest? Why can't I see what event quests are open?? I want to do the golden Rajang quest with other people!! I have to pray that either someone is running it when I search for it, or that someone will search for it when I'm running it! Why is the event quest SOS designed this way in Sunbreak?! It's not like that for High Rank and Master Rank!
I feel this worked best when the game first launched. It doesn't work great on PC or Xbox which has a lower playercount than Switch, and therefore you will have a lot of quests with four people and a lot of quests with nobody joining at all. I think matchmaking is also designed so that it waits til it has 3 joiners before letting you in all at the same time, which is infuriating.
Combat
Tumblr media
Base World was designed for the immersive, technical multiplayer experience that the PS4 wanted to sell. It wanted the world to feel alive. Your character is quite slow and clunky and less elaborate than in Generations Ultimate, but smoother as well. Combat is updated but everything is more muted and toned down.
Monsters feel alive, and you need to track them down with research. They run around with quick small movements and "limp" away to their dens. This can be annoying if you're chasing a Tobi Kadachi for ten minutes before it reaches its next stopping point. There are a lot of monsters with fast, unchoreographed attacks that you have to fight in enclosed spaces. I think the game is a bit more claustrophobic than what came before, and your stamina meter is outrageously small, and you take a long time to drink potions. Let's not forget how annoying World and Iceborne can be before you've completed them and got that sexy double HP double stamina Fatalis armor with Speed Eater and Evade Extender.
Attacks from the player in World are faster than in prior games, but hard hitting and deliberate. I feel a lot of satisfaction playing Longsword in this game. Every single weapon is fun to use because of how good the impact is. Not all weapons are equal though, and it's clear the Longsword is very powerful.
People complain about the Clutch Claw. In World, this tool was an unreliable piece of trash. In Iceborne, it's... almost necessary, to tenderize and knock monsters down. But personally I feel that even a non clutch clawed monster in World falls down more quickly than any Anomaly monster in Sunbreak.
Rise was designed for the fast paced, agile, arcadey experience that the Nintendo Switch is famous for. It's PERFECT for the console. You can ninja-hop to whatever direction you wish, you have so many more options for every single weapon. You can hop on your dog and the monster is already on your map. You can change what style you're using every moment of the match! It's almost limitless and you can tell because of how crazy speedruns have gotten in Sunbreak.
As a result of these arcadey changes, however, monsters feel... less alive. Closer to Generations but without the paintball tracking stuff that makes it so fun (in MY opinion). In Sunbreak especially, you'll find you're wailing on some monsters for 25 minutes before they go down. I don't enjoy Anomaly Quests and it's very difficult to get people joining them at certain level areas. You'll be spending a lot of time alone, especially if your friends have been playing more or less than you and are in completely different levels, therefore being unable to fight the same monsters. I don't think there's many areas in other games that have the same problem of, if you spend too much or little time in a certain mode, you can no longer play together.
Buffs and Nerfs in Rise
Tumblr media
Some weapons got do-overs. The Hunting Horn is now far more simple and aggressive, with less powerful but still useful buffs. The Longsword started off as ridiculously powerful in Base Rise, to the extent it was by far the best weapon. Thankfully it got nerfed, but I think they overdid it - instead of making the weapon more slow and deliberate like in World, they simply HALVED the damage output of all its base game special attacks and gave it a bunch of new powers so you'd have a whole new playstyle. I think the new Longsword playstyle is too risky, with too little gain. It looks stylish in youtube videos but is no longer optimal for most players.
Other weapons are buffed or nerfed because of how Sunbreak plays. The Hammer is a dogshit weapon, sorry, because monsters no longer keep their heads in one place long enough for you to get some good stun damage. Stun in general has been hard nerfed in Sunbreak. In Rise, Sticky Light Bowgun was a beast, so they made sure to keep the stun values for ALL weapons low in Sunbreak and you'd be lucky to get two stuns in a match, even with how much time is spent in combat now.
The Greatsword got some fun skills, but because monsters are more mobile, I feel that it doesn't keep up. You're likely to hit something with a TCS in World, but in Sunbreak most monsters will already be 20 metres away by the time you finish charging, even with the cool new switch skill that lets you instantly charge.
The Gunlance... it's way more mobile but I feel like you need to put in a great deal of work to keep up with other weapons. The blast damage doesn't do it in sunbreak. My partner became a Gunlance Pro but she was barely keeping up with my Switch Axe output even though frankly she's way better at the game than me and she spent dozens of hours perfecting her set.
The Switch Axe, my main weapon, is ASTRONOMICALLY buffed. I already thought it was good in World and Base Rise, and in Sunbreak it's just... *chefs kiss*... Swing that thing around and everything in the area dies.
It's certainly way less effort than Longsword or Hammer is now, RIP.
Monsters
Tumblr media
Sunbreak has perhaps the BEST list of monsters in any game. You have Astalos, Mizutsune, Almudron, Chamelos, Velkhana, Amatsu, Azuros, PRIMORDIAL MALZENO, basically everything you could want. World had a problem where a lot of monsters were just... quadripedic dogs or dragons, dragons, dragons. It didn't have anything like Azuros or Astalos. It had Jyuratados though... Great....
I think that Rise's NEW monsters tend to be annoying. I just mentioned Almudron but fucking hell, that monster is a NIGHTMARE if you're playing Greatsword or any slow weapon. It leaves mud everywhere, which is meant to encourage wirebug use, but what if you don't like using wirebugs all the time? Magnamalo is another one that hops around everywhere but I do enjoy fighting him.
Of the monsters that didn't make the crossover, I think Nergigante is my favourite from World. I love the CRUNCH of hitting his spikes with my Switch Axe or Greatsword, or my Gunlance. I feel nostalgic for the raid bosses like Safi or Alatreon but it's not like I rush to go back to them whenever I load up World.
I also think due to the more arcadey, less immersive style of Rise, most monsters that are in both games are more interesting in World. With exception to Zinogre. Fuck World Zinogre. And fuck Teostra. Again the monsters in World have more fast annoying movements.
So yeah this is a win for Sunbreak!
Endgame combat and set building
Tumblr media
I feel the non-anomaly Sunbreak monsters are less annoying than lategame normal Iceborne. I think tempered monsters in Iceborne are about the same level as anomaly monsters, but they go down much more quickly.
I think World had a LOT more going for it in endgame, because Sunbreak ONLY has anomaly quests.
Let me put it this way:
I completed Iceborne about 200 hours into World. Then I spent the next 500 hours doing a combination of Tempered Quests for my decorations, Safijiva, Fatalis, Alatreon, and of course the Guiding Lands. In the Guiding Lands I trained my land to fight every monster at least a few times at level 6. Was it grindy? A... little bit? It didn't feel that grindy. I had fun doing it because almost every step was done with my friend, and there was only a brief time where he was too high level and I couldn't go to his land.
Fatalis, I don't like. I couldn't beat it twice. Thankfully there was an exploit that allowed me to collect fatalis eyes with my cats, so I was able to build a few sets just from that. I used various methods to get the parts I needed.
I was able to build a set for every single weapon shortly after unlocking Fatalis. Yes, the decoration farming was a bit of a grind. However, I think that it was nothing close to what awaited me in Sunbreak...
I compled Sunbreak about 120 hours into the game? I really didn't spend much time in High Rank. Anyway, I spent the NEXT 600 HOURS doing NOTHING except for Anomaly Investigations, and I AM STILL NOT AT RANK 300.
Please send help. I never hit level cap. It's just... a combination of failed quests, the amount of time it took to gain a couple of levels, the time it takes to complete each quest... Save me!!
I also spent a lot of time trying to "perfect" my sets.
FYI - I have about 20 sets in World and they are all for different weapons. I have about 20 sets in rise and they are all for THE SAME WEAPON. That is how complex set building is in Rise, there's no "perfect" set.
This has some... pros? I guess? You are encouraged to try out different things. But honestly... I don't like the RNG involved in rolling for parts, and how you have to go hunt the monster again to get a new version of that part, then spend resources upgrading it for a different set. It's... too overwhelming. Too complicated.
Maybe I should've hacked in parts, to make this part of the game more enjoyable, but I was doing it with my partner, and she is very competitive so I didn't want to cheat. I also didn't want to be banned or anything for using hacked rolls.
When I completed BASE Rise on Switch, I immediately made a set for every weapon! It was fun. I was able to quickly join matches and try them out, and I'd always have the parts ready because of how simple it was to join matches when the game was at its most popular.
I think the biggest problem with Rise's endgame is that they didn't have enough development budget to make something as meaningful and deep as World's Guiding Lands, so instead they artificially padded it out with all these Anomaly Investigations.
Overall
Tumblr media
My opinions on the two games shifted as I became more experienced. At first, it felt like Rise was smoother at everything, but when I put more hours into World, I got used to all the annoying parts and became fully immersed. Then when I put more hours into rise and Sunbreak, the cracks started to show, reaching a breaking point where I put down the game and haven't played it in months since the final monster released.
I think Rise is a better casual, arcadey, fun game to play with your friends, making it perfect for the Nintendo Switch. Sunbreak tries to be something more. It succeeds in some ways, like more complicated combat, but trying to be as hardcore in Sunbreak as you are in World will result in a pretty miserable experience.
World is the worse casual game, by a biiiig margin, but the much better game to sink 700 hours into with your friends beating all the endgame content. It's perfect for hardcore gamers once you get past the annoyances of the Base World story missions.
My more casual friends preferred Rise, it was more digestible for them, but once I got properly into the game, me and my hardcore MH friend much prefer World. It's more fun for us to go back to. It's nice and slow so we can take our time to enjoy it, rather than racing to complete objectives so we can continue grinding AR or whatever the fuck.
Does it still count as femslash if I write Johanna as non-binary?
Hi there! When we were conceiving this event, we wanted to be clear that not every relationship non-m/m is automatically femslash. The idea that nonbinary just means “Woman Lite” (or that only AFAB people can be nonbinary) is an extremely damaging and restricting one to the community, and we want to avoid reinforcing that idea as much as possible.
That being said, there are absolutely people who identify as both a woman and as nonbinary or as a woman and any other term of gender identity. We don’t want to exclude that, either! Gender is such an expansive concept for so many people. So…I think it’s really up to you to decide if your fic with your specific interpretation of Johanna counts as femslash. Nonbinary Johanna (or any other character) is absolutely welcome in the event; all we ask is that you carefully consider the point raised in the first paragraph and keep it in mind.
Thank you for your question! I hope this clarifies things.
