This Tamil series (it has English subtitles) isn't perfect, but it's so good! It's called Ayali, and seeing this instagram post reminded me of how powerful the series was.
"The story revolves around the life of a young teenage girl (Tamizhselvi) who defies the horrible 500-year-old customs and traditions that oppress the women of Veerappannai village in Pudukkottai towards her dream of becoming a doctor."

Why Venba resonated with me so much
First of all, I want to preface this article with who I am. I am not Indian nor Tamil, but I am an Taiwanese immigrant living in the Netherlands, and I also spent some of my childhood in the US.
Using food as the through line for the story is genius. Food really represents so much about a culture. By moving abroad, I feel I am broken from that lineage. My grandmother worked as a chef, and my mother learned from her too. But now that I am abroad, I don't have access to the same ingredients, and often it is just easier to cook the same way as the locals do. There's a very limited number of dishes I remember how to cook, and it's hard to even get inspiration. I only wish I could've learned more from my mom, or have a cookbook passed down from my grandmother. Seeing Venba and Kavin try to remember their home dishes reminds me of trying to recreate a flavor I had in my childhood, with nothing but a blurry memory, and my general knowledge of Chinese cooking principles.
When I was born, my parents felt that Taiwan didn't offer enough chances, and they want me to be a global citizen, so they taught me English, by only showing me English TV shows, and later on, we got to live in the US for a couple years. But when I returned, I no longer fit in. Even though I spent most of my childhood in my own country, I felt like a foreigner. I related to internet culture more than my home culture.
I cried a lot when Kavin said he felt like a fraud, because he tried not to be Tamil when it was inconvenient. I also wished that I was born in western europe. I thought it would make things much easier. I'd already know the culture, the language, the way of life, and have citizenship. I do not blame Kavin for wanting to distance himself from that culture. If anything, the fault lies in the locals not being accepting of foreign cultures.
This game reminded me that there is something unique in having a foot in both doors. I have a unique perspective on cultures that most people don't have. And that is why it's so important to tell these stories in games. Like Rosa's trans immigrant story from Goodbye Volcano High, it helps others understand my experience, and it helps me understand and accept myself.

Okay you do not understand how seen butterfly soup made me feel as a Tamilan. We get barely any representation in Western media, and a lot of kollywood/bollywood dubs cast light-skinned actors to play characters (also there isn’t much stuff about teenagers in kollywood). But then there’s butterfly soup, a video game no less, and it has one of their main character as a Tamilan. And she speaks tamil and she looks like me and sure, we may not be the exact same person but god does she make me feel so represented and so valid and so deserving of it. We need more representation of South Asians - and not just Indians who speak Hindi. I’m talking about those from Sri Lanka and Gujarat and Karnataka and Kerela and Tamil Nadu. I’m talking about all those South Asians who have to cling onto representation of North Indians when their South Indian culture is so very different. I’m talking about the people who don’t actually understand the Punjabi or Hindi spoken in the TV show or movie even though their South Asain. I’m talking about the people who have only ever eaten pani puri like twice in their life. I’m talking about the people who haven’t watched Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham but have seen Bahubali in it’s original language of Telegu. I love and will always respect and be grateful and proud of South Asian representation but it’s time to start branching out. It’s time to look at all the different cultures and regions and people of South Asia, and not just say “Oh we’ve put in a character that’s speaks Hindi, South Asian representation done.” It’s the 21st century and South Asians are tired of being generalised and not getting the representation they deserve. I shouldn’t have to cling onto a video game to feel seen. I shouldn’t have to dig and search to find something that shows South Asians exist in Western Spaces. It should be there, waiting for me.

Puberty ceremonies are also a way of announcing to the extended family that a girl has come of reproductive age – an indication by the girl’s parents to relatives that they must all look out for suitable marriage alliances for her in a few years.
These ceremonies also announce which girl in the community needs to be watched closely, lest she goes ‘astray’.
Either way, they celebrate a girl’s reproductive capacity without taking into account her consent or ability to take on the role of a parent.

about that "I'm not from the us" ask set
or whatever it was written there
all
every
most is a very interesting question and I need answers because knowledge = fun
Ahhh... This is going to be long...
1. favourite place in your country?
India is a big country, okay, I haven't been to many places, but I liked kerala when I went there one time.
2. do you prefer spending your holidays in your country or travel abroad?
In my country, in my state, in my house. I don't like traveling.
3. does your country have access to sea?
Yeah :)
4. favourite dish specific for your country?
Creul. How dare you make me choose?
5. favourite song in your native language?
Ohhh,,,, this is hard. I don't know many songs like at all
ஆனந்த யாழை (aanandha yaazhai)
சின்ன சின்ன ஆசை (chinna chinna aasai)
உனக்கு என்ன வேணும் சொல்லு (unakku enna venum sollu)
Are they all very popular songs? Yes, as I said I don't know many songs. (How hell did I become an instrumentalist!?)
6. most hated song in your native language?
I don't think I hate any songs, like in general..
7. three words from your native language that you like the most?
Who has favorite words?! I like them all.
8. do you get confused with other nationalities? if so, which ones and by whom?
I am, unfortunately pale as fuck, so some people think I'm white (oh the horrors) and other times they think I'm from andhra side, because again pale as hell lol
9. which of your neighbouring countries would you like to visit most/know best?
We somehow have some level of beef with most of our neighbours,.,. Probably sri lanka, I know a decent amount about it because shared history, and it would be the easiest to travel to
10. most enjoyable swear word in your native language?
No "swear words" because language is old and we have forgotten most of them :(
11. favourite native writer/poet?
Kalki Krishnamurthy, is this a basic answer? Yes. But, I am not a book person, okay, books are scary and I haven't read many in my lifetime. I'm going based on what my mom said lol.
12. what do you think about English translations of your favourite native prose/poem?
No particular feelings about it :/
13. does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions or traditions that might seem strange to outsiders?
Oh, so many, but like most young people don't follow it that much. It's just something old people nag about.
14. do you enjoy your country’s cinema and/or TV?
I don't watch many movies or TV shows in general, so I don't have any strong feelings towards it.
15. a saying, joke, or hermetic meme that only people from your country will get?
Again, big country, varied languages. But let me think of something I can actually translate...
We call people who don't think before they speak cashew nuts (முந்திரிக்கொட்ட (Mundhiri Kotta)) because of how the the cashew nut protrudes out of the cashew fruit.
I chose a random one, there are many more, Tamil is a language built on metaphors lol
16. which stereotype about your country you hate the most and which one you somewhat agree with?
Most hated: THE GOD DAMN INDIAN ACCENT. Like 1) it originates from the welsh accent 2)it mostly comes from north Indian diasporas 3) NORTH INDIANS ALSO DON'T HAVE THAT ACCENT.
THERE ARE 22 DIFFERENT OFFICIAL LANGUAGES AND HUNDREDS OF UNOFFICIAL ONES, HOW THE HELL IS THERE SUPPOSED TO BE AN ALL ENCOMPASSING "INDIAN ACCENT"
Also, a million others, but we don't have time for that.
Agree with: we like our spices yes :}
17. are you interested in your country’s history?
YES YES YES. 100% YES. I am a history nerd about it. I have so much history trivia. Pls someone ask me about it.
18. do you speak with a dialect of your native language?
I don't know, there are dialects I think, but I don't know much about them or even which one I speak lol.
19. do you like your country’s flag and/or emblem? what about the national anthem?
It's alright, I don't have strong feelings about it .
20. which sport is The Sport in your country?
Cricket. Enough said.
21. if you could send two things from your country into space, what would they be?
Ahhh, I don't know. Our food, maybe? Astronauts need food, right?
22. what makes you proud about your country? what makes you ashamed?
People. For both. I will not elaborate ^-^
23. which alcoholic beverage is the favoured one in your country?
I don't drink alcohol. So, I don't know. Where I live, it's also kinda taboo to drink alcohol :(
24. what other nation is joked about most often in your country?
Brits and Americans, again enough said
25. would you like to come from another place, be born in another country?
No, I like it here.
26. does your nationality get portrayed in Hollywood/American media? what do you think about the portrayal?
Don't really care.
27. favourite national celebrity?
I don't know any pop culture, national or international. So, can't say :/
28. does your country have a lot of lakes, mountains, rivers? do you have favourites?
Yeah all three and lots of them, we are big as I said before. We are supposed have favourites?
29. does your region/city have a beef with another place in your country?
None that I know of
30. do you have people of different nationalities in your family?
Nope ^-^

New introduction post for Tumblr <3 (I’ll try to not make it long. SIKE!)
hiii people, I’m addie! (nickname that no one uses irl) A 17 year old Indian (tamil) girlie. Introvert and bookworm. Professional weirdo in her cringecore era. Will overanalyse anything and everything. I love making lists. Am straight (eww) but will stare at pretty women when I get the chance. Forget i said that. This is my main acc (that is very multifandom-oriented so there will be a LOT on here)
Have been a eurovision fan since 2020. My brother’s more into jesc. Obsessed with melfest (especially older editions), mgp and sanremo mostly. Anything that’s even remotely Italian/Slovenian/French fascinates me. Major Italian indie fan. And then there’s joker out. They’re the reason I formed this account ❤️ can never have enough of them, can you? I am also an absolute whore for crime thrillers.
Other Artists 🎶: Alexander Rybak, Benjamin Ingrosso, Fulminacci, Ditonellapiaga, PTN, Rovere, Ghemon, Tananai, Fabio Rovazzi, Santi Francesi, Alvan, Itzy, Lindsey Stirling and I could go on but I won’t, for everyone’s sake.
TV Shows 📺: NCIS, Supernatural, House MD, Sherlock BBC, The Big Bang theory, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, Panhandle and others which I probably don’t remember much of.
My hellaverse side account : @nightowlstardust
Anyways, feel free to chat with me anytime (my chronically online ass ain’t going nowhere) i promise I’m friendly, even if i might not seem like that 😊
bye lol hope reading this didn’t give you a headache

Bio
Hazel was born in Perth (Australia) to Indian immigrant parents. She's the second child of the family. She grew up middle class with an engineer mother and a university teacher father. She had a comfortable life and went to private schools. It is where she grew envious of the children of wealthier family. She never lacked anything and had a great life but she always wanted more. She knew she was destined for something bigger.
After graduating high school, she moved to Sydney to start an acting and modelling career. She got a few jobs in commercials and catalogues. She even starred as an extra or a tiny role in a few soaps, shows and films but nothing big. She never got cast in anything important. Still she knew she would make it somehow so she persevered.
Until her father got into an accident. She agreed to move back to Perth to help her mother take care of him since her career was not going anywhere. After her father got better, she wanted to move again but covid hit, stopping her. After the pandemic, she had lost her momentum and decided to quit acting to become an influencer or a singer.
Hazel worked in Louis Vuitton's shop in Perth before being picked to be a spice girl. She spent all day serving the clients she wished she could be. On her freetime, she posted videos and sang at luxurious venues. She was building followers and she kept hoping to be the next big thing. One evening, she was singing at Perth's Ritz-Carlton when a producer noticed her. That was her big break. Six months later she became a superstar.
Now she lives the life she always aspired to and is obsessed with staying relevant. She is doing everything to keep the spotlight on her.
Career
After being a failed model, actress and influencer, Hazel is now ginger spice on the global girlband sensation that is the Spice girls.
The group reached stardom two years ago. She has been living the dream ever since. She makes cameos in movies and tv shows. She went from being an employee to a Louis Vuitton's brand ambassador. She is always at a party, an award, on set, or on tour. She never takes a minute for herself. She has to keep moving and keep eyes on her. She is not the easiest to work with and push the people around her to high standards. She is starting to build herself a diva reputation and is trying to control her image

Do you have any siblings? yes, one older sister
Do you have pets? yessss i've got three cats!!
How old are you? 19

What's your all-time favourite movie/tv show? fav movie has got to be the godfather part ii. i've watched it a million times. fav show will forever be game of thrones, no matter how badly it crashed and burned. i really imprinted on that shit lol
What are you enjoying to do in your free time? read fic hahaha. or watch movies. recently i haven't managed to watch anything except reels on instagram though, send help
Are you an introvert or an extrovert? mostly an introvert, but i think i'm just bad at small talk. i don't have issues with public speaking or anything, and i can talk about stuff i'm interested in for hours and hours to virtual strangers xD
Your favourite music genres? i don't listen to a lot of english music tbh! i'd say pop? mostly i just listen to film soundtracks and bollywood songs
Your dream place to visit? i used to be fuckin OBSESSED with australia as a child so i hope to still go there? but i'd like to visit all over, really. i haven't travelled much. definitely wanna experience living in the US/UK for a while. i plan to do my post-grad abroad

Best memory you could think of? this question is super hard for me lol. recently my roommate and i did an hp rewatch and she asked me what memory i would rely on for my patronus and...i literally do not know. like i've had a decently happy life, but nothing stands out, you know? there isn't any one instance i can think of like that
Worst memory you can think of? same thing again. my 2023 has been so fucking bad it's not even sad to me anymore i just find it genuinely funny. but it hasn't been all bad either? i really don't know if i've just repressed my emotions for this year or if i'm over it already lol. maybe it'll come back to bite me in the arse later
Do you have any fears? moths and butterflies (i don't discriminate) i also don't like small birds/plants that are beginning to dry up/balloons losing air. i was a weird kid

How many pictures do you have on your phone? 5001 + my icloud has not been backed up in 462 days
Who was your favourite childhood crush? first guy i ever liked was shahid kapoor. first guy i actively fantasized about etc has got to be chris evans. the captain america movies were my personality for a long time in middle school lmao
Are you a romantic? hmm i don't think so. i have pretty old-fashioned tastes when it comes to love and romance i guess, but i think i'm more of a cynic
What’s your dream date? showing my s/o movies/shows that i love. honestly that's my love language
What are your hobbies? i draw a little, watch movies, read fic. i used to play professional-level badminton but that hasn't been fun for me in a long time :(
