How do we know where Eugene's orphanage was?
There are several clues during the course of the series, and even the movie, that Eugene's not from Corona.
In the movie, he refers to the Lost Princess celebration as, "the lantern thing they do for the princess." The entire kingdom participates, and yet he calls it something "they" do, implying that he doesn't participate in it, himself, nor does he have any emotional attachment to it. (The citizens of Corona clearly have an emotional attachment to the festival, and teach their children to honor the Lost Princess on her day.) Most people refer to something that is done in their home town as something "we" do.
During the prologue of Tangled: Before Ever After, he narrates, "Raised as an orphan on the rough streets of--" and then Rapunzel cuts him off, a writing tactic used to hint that there is more information there that we're not yet privy to. Besides, why would he feel the need to say that he was raised on the rough streets of anywhere in particular if we were meant to assume it was Corona?
In "The Return of Strongbow," Rapunzel, upon examining the ring, exclaims that, "Oldie must have been from Corona!" At this point in time in the series, it’s almost certain that Rapunzel knows where Eugene grew up. Why would she feel the need to point out that Oldie - Eugene’s supposed caretaker - must have been from Corona if he, himself, was?
In "The Return of Quaid," Eugene refers to Vardaros as "my old stomping grounds," and Quaid knew him and Lance from when they were young troublemakers. We know the Baron has a house in or near Corona because of "The Return of Strongbow," but Vardaros has been his base of operations for years.
Now, all of this is the contextual evidence given within the episodes. But there's an episode that was written, but never finalized and never got made, and Ricky Roxburgh, one of the writers for the series, told me about it: The Trial of Fitzherbert and Schnitz. It was a story about how, when they were kids growing up in Vardaros, Lance was directly responsible for Eugene not getting adopted. While this episode never made it into the series, they kept it in mind when giving us the crumbs of Eugene and Lance's past. Go ahead and follow that link above to find out what I was told about the plot of that lost episode.

Tangled Fic Recommendation
Every so often I like to talk about a fanfiction I am reading and recommend it to people.
Today, I'm not only recommending one story, I am recommending an entire series.
23 stories in their series so far and counting. And there is still a lot more to come.
Not only has this author embarked on a thrilling rewrite of the series, they have written it so well that I am always eagerly awaiting the next part.
The best part is that updates are DAILY! What author manages to keep updating daily consistently for over a year?
I am of course talking about the series on A03 starting with the fic: "Two Tangled Sisters" which begins with the premise that Cassandra was taken to the Tower before Gothel kidnapped Rapunzel and then subsequently cared for Rapunzel and became an older sister. The first fic shows them growing up in the Tower and then covers the Tangled movie, introducing Eugene and showing their adventure as Rapunzel and Eugene fall in love, alongside Cassandra who just wants to protect her little sister.
The series has expanded from there, following through with how Rapunzel and Cassandra adapt to Royal Life (because Arianna being the most awesome mum ever decides to adopt Cassandra too and she becomes a Princess of Corona). It is fascinating following their journey together, and the different paths Rapunzel and Cassandra take in this AU.
It continues into The Coronation, with Rapunzel getting her hair back, and then onto a rewrite of Season One, Two and now Three. I cannot talk much about it but each story written so far has something for everyone!
New Dream cuteness!
Eugene and Cass bickering!
Sisterhood!
Family bonding!
Alchemists!
Arianna!
Hating Frederic!
Danger!
Excitement!
Our favourite characters getting hurt!
There is so much this series has given! To this day, the season finale for season 1 still hurts me.
I love the character progression all the characters go through: they all shine in this series!
As a Eugene fan, I cannot express my excitement enough as to his future role in this series! I am so excited for it!
And, despite the series being called Two Tangled Sisters, Eugene has a big role in the series and his and Rapunzel's relationship does take centre stage.
There are twists and turns and rewrites of episodes! An unexpected pairing for Cassandra that I did not expect to want but now its there I am rooting for them! Such great development of all the characters and it shows what a great author we have for this series, for them to be able to tell such great stories and make a pairing work.
This series is so much more than just a Cassandra series. It is so much more than that. It is one of the best rewrites I have ever encountered in my few years in the fandom. The author has done the impossible and, as a fan who wasn't fond of Cassandra to start with, this series has certainly helped me see Cassandra, even in canon, with a new light. I cannot wait to see how this series goes!
I urge anyone not to brush this series off, to give it a try. You do not have to read every story in the series. The core set of stories following the series are enough, and there are multiple side-stories that add a bit extra to the characters.
If you only want to read the core stories, this is the order you should read them in:
Two Tangled Sisters
Two Princesses
The Coronation
Within the Walls of Corona (which covers the first half of S1)
To Rule A Kingdom (Queen For A Day reimagining)
The Alchemists Search (dealing with the second half of S1)
The Princess, The Pirate and The Prosecutor (S1 finale)
Vardaros and the Tower (S2 opener)
Magic and Artefacts (covers the first quarter of S2)
High Tide Dream (covers the second quarter of S2)
The Great Tree
The Past We Try To Forget (covers the third quarter of S2)
Shimmering Stones and Uncertain Destinies (S2 finale)
Return To Corona (S3 opener - currently posting)
I urge people to give this series a chance, whether you are a Cassandra fan or not - this series has something for everyone. And this is a series I wouldn't have read myself if I hadn't given a chance - and the only reason I did was because of the daily updates. I am so glad I gave this series a chance. It is 100% worth it!
Now, for some of you here, it will be very obvious which author I am talking about with this fic recommendation.
Unfortunately, this author has been, in some aspects, ostracised by the fandom in a lot of places. It's got to a point they still do not feel comfortable on tumblr, and this, to me, is very sad, because @twotangledsisters is such a GREAT PERSON to interact with.
She has become one of my favourite people on this site. Her writing, her opinions, her art are absolutely fabulous, and yet, people block her, excluding her from being able to interact with their content all because of her love of Cassandra from Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure.
@twotangledsisters is not just a Cassandra fan. She is a New Dream fan too but has been excluded from a lot of New Dream spaces because of her love of Cassandra and that is absolutely heart-breaking, that someone who loves this show so much, cannot fully interact with the fandom simply because they love Cassandra. If someone reblogs a piece of New Dream art that she likes, she finds out she's blocked from the original poster's blog so cannot follow them or see their other New Dream content.
It is sad and horrible to find out the way she did that people have done this to her. And how some people sent her horrible messages, telling her she was not welcome in New Dream spaces, when she absolutely 100% is WELCOME.
@twotangledsisters has so much love and care and creativity she wants to share with everyone but now feels she cannot. I am thrilled that she continues to produce brilliant artwork for my own fics! I'm honestly astounded by what she has produced so far for my fic: The Lost Prince!
Please everyone: be kind.
@twotangledsisters is a gift to the fandom and I feel incredibly proud to be calling myself her friend. She is awesome, and so is her fanfic series: Two Tangled Sisters.
Give it a try! I heartily recommend it.

What are some of the favorite scenes you've written?
Oooh, love this question!
From Two Tangled sisters:
The final scene in Chapter 50: The Wishing Fountain (Part 4/5: An Unformed Heart and Unmeasurable Love) from Within the Walls of Corona.
In this arc, Cassandra wished for a normal childhood for her and Rapunzel resulting in them transforming into children. Arianna and Frederic finally get to hold their baby but when Cassandra falls ill they must return the girls to the fountain to return them to their normal age. It's very sad, and I love how it came out.
The third scene in Chapter 7: A Family Frostwork of The Frostwork Festival
This fic is a Holidays fic and this chapter is the day of the holiday. My fave scene specifically is the gift exchange, it's one of few moments that feature Rapunzel, Cass, Arianna, Frederic and Eugene all together, all enjoying themselves. There's bickering, there's love, and Eugene gets his first Frostwork gift in many years which I love.
The first scene in Chapter 30: The Gallows from The Princess, The Pirate and The Prosecutor
Eugene's nearly executed for a crime he didn't commit and his pov as his taken to the gallows is a really good scene.
First scene from Chapter 16: Birds and Magic (Part 8/10: Anything) from Magic and Artefacts
Cass thinks Caine hates her and Caine comes out with an 'I love you'... What more is there to say?
First scene in Chapter 4: Let's Talk Relationships and Ships (Part 3/6: Girl who has a crush on you and who you very much like being around but haven’t yet decided on what those feelings mean) from High Tide Dream
Where Cass tries to put her feelings to Caine to words and with Eugene's help finally comes to understand them. It's just a really nice scene.
First scene from Chapter 14: No Detours, Just Romance and Shenanigans (Part 6/6: How Gentle?) from High Tide Dream
They finally get together! And the 'I can do gentle', the 'I want to be with you and I can do a relationship on your terms', the joy these two feels and the relief they feel and... I just love it.
and more... special mentions would be when Cass and Caine fight back to back in Vardaros, Eugene first meeting Amaris, Arianna gently reassuring Eugene on his first night in the castle of how he's a hero, Eugene's nightmare during Bad Luck Charm and the comfort of his friends after, Cassandra's using her magic despite her bad prior experiences to protect her girlfriend in the Great Tree... There are SO MANY scenes from this series I'd love to point at and talk more about but we could go on forever.
From outside Two Tangled Sisters:
From Chapter 1 of Three Thieves the final scene. Cassandra getting Eugene and Lance in trouble and they're proud because she's learning their ways. It's just so sweet.
From Chapter 8 of Always By Your Side. This is the chapter where Arianna babysits Cassandra and Eugene, and the finally scene specifically is my fave, the way Eugene stands up for himself, the way he shows to still be haunted by his past, and the way Cass doesn't understand, showing how those few years difference are huge, they're the reason Eugene remains haunted while Cass has forgotten everything before Captain.
From my fic Empty, the first few scenes depicting Cass' youngest years and how the pain lingered and dragged was very good.
Fourth scene from the end (sorry, too many scenes in this story) from Plus Forts Ensemble. Eugene is dead, Rapunzel is grieving, Cassandra takes responsibility for her actions. I loved the idea and loved how this scene came out!
Clumsy, Messy Disrespectful. The whole thing. It's only got like three scenes, the glass breaking, Eugene and the parents. And I love all three of them. I don't usually write Rapunzel focused fics, far less such an emotional one, yet I love this oneshot. I wouldn't change a thing about it!
From We Can't be Happy Every Day, the fourth scene where Arianna reassure Cap he's doing a good job, despite his fears and despite the fact Cassandra is crying. I love Cap here and I love Arianna too.
From Unfair, the first three scenes. Captain getting injured, Cassandra's feelings about it, her anger, and Captain coming to understand his new normal. I just really like how they came across.
And that's it! At least for Tangled fanfics :D
Thanks so much for the ask and i apologize if this was a long and not very interesting post, but it was a lot of fun for me to go through some of my old fics!

What are some of your favorite Tangled series episodes?
Honestly? I've really grown to love the fluffier slice-of-life episodes, my favorites in Season 1 being "Rapunzel's Enemy", "Cassandra V. Eugene", "The Return of Strongbow", "Under Raps", and "Pascal's Story". Every so often I'll put on the early Season 1 episodes to play in the background while I do things in the kitchen. I love these characters so much that despite a lot of the less plot-heavy episodes being very typical for a kids' show, I can still watch and enjoy most of them. I also particularly like the episodes in Vardaros, as well as the island episodes "King Pascal" and "Happiness Is..."
"Queen for a Day" will always stick out to me as the first episode that made me go "Oh shit, this show means business." And then I also like...pretty much every episode after that leading up to the season finale. The finale itself is pretty good too, of course.
"Rapunzel and the Great Tree" is what I consider to be the show's best-written episode, although I don't particularly enjoy watching it as much - not just because of what Cassandra goes through, but because I feel like the rest of the show doesn't properly follow through on it, and that does sadly taint the rewatching experience for me since I know the brilliant setup it presents doesn't have a satisfying payoff later (even though that's obviously not the fault of the episode itself). It's still so good though and lives in my head rent-free constantly. "Waiting in the Wings"? Come on. Absolute S-Tier.
I mentioned this on Twitter a while ago, but if I had to pick one favorite episode overall, it'd be "Freebird". It's such a good character episode for Rapunzel and Cassandra, and I relate a lot to both of their perspectives. Throw in another one of my favorite songs and a much stronger ending than you'd expect from an episode with such a premise, and you have a winner in my book. Also it's fun to meme on. I dedicated an entire April Fool's to a frame of Bird Cass squawking. It was comedy gold to me and to me only.

Chapter 9: Wherever the Breeze is Going
“Um. I… do feel… more like me,” she hedges. “What time is it?”
“Almost two,” Eugene says.
“What? In the– in the afternoon?!”
It must be, if the frigid light pouring through the cargo grate is any indication, but it isn’t until Eugene nods that she can bring herself to believe it.
“I’ve never slept all day before,” Rapunzel says, baffled. “Wow.”
“Varian said as long as you were breathing normally to just let you sleep. And, really, if it weren’t for that nightmare, I’ll bet you could’ve slept right on ’til tomorrow morning.” Eugene smiles, though the warm crinkles around his eyes don’t quite mask his worry. “You wanna sit up, Sunshine? Walk around? Maybe eat something?”

That foreigner question got me thinking, where did Eugene live before Corona? I know he was raised in Varados and that he left eventually to become a thief, but where exactly did he stay. I thought he may have stayed around Varados for sometime, maybe on the streets. But he dated Stalyan when he was a teenager and I feel like the hostile takeover of Varados by the baron kinda implies he, by extension Stalyan aren't native to that area, so Eugene must have left Varados young. I think Eugene traveled a lot, I think its implied in the series he even went to italy. But even a traveler such as himself had to have stayed somewhere semi-permanently, some place he just kept coming back to, some sort of house or hideout. Heck, even Gothel had a house at one point, but she just abandoned it.
See, I don't agree with that, because Quaid already knew Eugene and Lance as thieves. I think the Baron kept a low profile for a long time, possibly even pretended to be a benefactor, until he knew that there was no one that could hope to stand in his way. At that point, he went from benefactor to iron-fisted ruler.
One thing about Vardaros that I never see anyone mention is that it clearly used to be on a river. There's remains of ships everywhere, and the buildings are elevated from the ground. But now, the whole place is like a dustbowl town. But the Baron's villa? Beautiful, lush green grass. He's got trees. He has a reflecting pool.
Tumblr media
That means he's diverting and stealing all the water for himself. He's probably got the mouth of the river dammed up.
I suspect he made his move after Quaid retired, because no one else held a candle to his ability to keep law and order in that town.
As for Eugene, I think he was homeless after he left Vardaros. After all, in "No Time Like the Past," he and Lance are living in a cave. I bet it was a lot like that, a lot of the time. In "Queen For a Day," he makes mention of spending a lot of time up in the mountains (like when he robbed Arianna).

I love, and I mean love, Love, LOVE, the early episodes of Season 2, more specifically the episodes where Rapunzel and the gang were in Vardaros. I dont know what it is but Vex and Quaid are such an underrated duo and the stories arent that bad to be honest. I just feel like with whats going on in the world to be positive of one of my favorite Tangled characters introduced to the series, I wont ever forget Quaid and I wish he and Vex had a bit more screen time. May his voice actor (Reg E. Cathy) rest in peace.
