POSSESSOR (2020)

Possessor (2020): A Chilling Ride Through Someone Else's Skin (and Mind)
Title: Possessor
Genre: Sci-Fi, Psychological Thriller
Year: 2020
Country: Canada
Inhale, exhale, then step into the shoes (or rather, minds) of Tasya Vos, a corporate assassin with a killer app: bodyjacking. Using brain-implant tech, she dives into the lives of unsuspecting hosts, turning them into human puppets to eliminate high-profile targets. But when a mission goes sideways in the opulent world of a tycoon's family, Tasya's grip on reality starts to slip. Is she the hunter, or is she the hunted? This is "Possessor," and buckle up, because it's a mind-bending trip you won't forget (or forgive your therapist for recommending).
Acting so good, it's almost criminal (pun intended). Andrea Riseborough delivers a tour-de-force performance as Tasya, capturing the cold efficiency of a professional killer and the creeping terror of a fractured identity. Christopher Abbott as the hijacked host, Colin, is equally compelling, portraying his descent into madness with raw vulnerability. Even Sean Bean, in a brief but memorable cameo as Colin's father, adds a touch of gravitas to the proceedings.
The camerawork is like a voyeuristic ghost, flitting between the physical and the digital. One moment you're in Tasya's sterile control room, the next you're trapped in the host's bewildered eyes. The sound design is equally immersive, amplifying the unsettling hum of technology and the gut-wrenching screams of unwilling vessels.
Now, let's dissect the "good" and "bad" like a rogue implant analyzing a host. The acting, story, and visuals are all top-notch, weaving a suspenseful narrative that keeps you guessing until the very end. The ending itself, while bleak, is a satisfying twist that lingers long after the credits roll. As for the "bad"? Well, let's just say the film isn't for the faint of heart. It's brutal, disturbing, and dives deep into the murky waters of identity and free will. But hey, if you're looking for a mainstream popcorn flick, this ain't it.
Netizens seem to be split. Some hail it as a bold and innovative masterpiece, while others find it too dark and unsettling. Regardless, "Possessor" sparks conversation and leaves a lasting impression.
Budget vs. box office? Let's just say the film wasn't a blockbuster, but its cult following and critical acclaim have secured its place in the pantheon of mind-bending sci-fi.
Fun fact: The film was shot on 35mm film, a rarity in the digital age, adding to its gritty, retro feel. Additionally, the practical effects were created with minimal CGI, making the gore all the more realistic (and stomach-churning).
Overall, "Possessor" is a solid film for the genre, not your average sci-fi flick. It's a challenging watch, but one that rewards the patient viewer with a thought-provoking and unsettling experience. Just remember, once you step into someone else's mind, there's no guarantee you'll ever find your way back.
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (but prepare for a wild ride!)

Possessor
Tumblr media
Summary: Assassin Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough) carries out her work by possessing the bodies of other individuals. However, she encounters difficulties with her latest assignment when the body's host starts fighting back.
Inventive concept with suitably gory execution (so to speak) and stiff, twitchy performance from Riseborough. Definitely a Cronenberg work.

Happy 15 days of Halloween on Hulu!
Possessor (2020)
⭐️⭐️⭐️.45/5
😱😱😱😱.5/5
“Im a Fucking Giant”
Tasya vos works for the government as an assassin, and in order to take out high profile targets. She takes control of other people's bodies.
Dealing with the balance between regular and ‘work’ life, she begins to lose her sense of reality and her work life.
Visually this movie has some stunning pieces that really encompass the feeling of losing yourself completely. Karim Hussain was quoted to say “Hats off to the producers for allowing us to make something as insane as this” Now watching this film I see exactly what he means.
Now let's talk about when gore is needed and when gore is not. Terrifier, gore is needed, Saw gore is needed. However this movie didn't have to be as gory as it was. My head was turned quite a bunch in this movie and I can handle gore but this was next level. Almost as much gore as terrifier for everyone who has seen that.
The ending of this picture made my mouth drop open. The film went to a point i didnt even think it could go to, very strange indeed. This was an experience in itself but I don't know if it's something I would watch again.
Director: Brandon Cronenberg
Cinematographer: Karim Hussain
Tw: nudity, self harm, blood, intense gore, suicide, child death

Possessor (2020)
Tumblr media
With David Cronenberg moving away from the body horror genre, his son has picked up the torch. With Antiviral and now, Possessor Brandon Cronenberg shows an eerie affinity for it. This film will have you checking your fingers to make sure they’re still there and feeling your scalp to make sure no holes have appeared. It’s strikingly original, with excellent performances. Particularly effective are the special effects and makeup. Not because they make you wonder how they were done; because of the way they’re utilized.
Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough) is a professional assassin working for a high-tech organization. They leave no crime to investigate because the killer is always someone close to the victim; someone whose body Tasya has taken over before committing suicide and returning to her body. Her career has made Tasya increasingly distant from her husband, Michael (Rossif Sutherland), and son, Ira (Gage Graham-Arbuthnot). Her boss, Girder (Jennifer Jason Leigh), doubts her ability to do the job and retain a normal life. Tasya nonetheless accepts a new assignment.
Possessor brings discomfort on so many levels. First, there’s the premise. Killing people for profit is bad enough but it’s the way they're murdered. I don’t mean the brutality of Tasya’s crimes - though their savagery will have you reeling. It’s the idea of taking someone over and then pinning the crime on them. The victim can't even plead innocence in court because each assignment ends with Tasya putting a gun in her mouth. It’s a whole new level of cold, and this is an organization. They have doctors who implant devices into people’s skulls, lab technicians that work the machine Tasya's plugged into, researchers, moles, and more. Do they not see what we see? probably not. Cronenberg (who also wrote the screenplay) brings the camera super close when blood flows, allowing us to see the teeth being knocked out of the place, and the blades penetrate the skin. Still, this has been going on for years.
Little details throughout also make you uneasy. Andrea Riseborough’s look, for instance. The way she moves, her hair, the way she speaks to her victims and family. It’s like she’s not even human anymore. Her latest possession, Colin Tate (Christopher Abbott). His job is the kind of creepy voyeurist grind you imagine happening in real life. Some unscrupulous corporation must be paying people to do what he does… but Cronenberg shows it to you. Even if we close our eyes, the imagines we’ve seen won't go away. I doubt even shards of glass plunged deep into our eye sockets would reach far enough to extract them.
Then, we see these relatively simple but deeply effective visions/dreams. The symbolism is as easy to decipher as 2+2, which makes them even more unsettling. You know more horror is coming but what kind? It leads to a conclusion that's brilliant and chilling. I had to watch it a second time to make sure it happened like I thought it did. I'm almost sorry I double-checked. Now I've got to find a way to shake that feeling. The brilliant originality of Possessor and its stylish direction make you eager to see what is coming next.
