Since I’m still new to TF2 and all, YouTube FINALLY recommended me the “Meet the Guard Dog” SFM fanmade 10th merc update and I wanted to know what you thought about le doggo 👀

More specifically, should I draw le doggo in question?

(I’m late to the party I know but I’m curious of what y’all thought. Any cool facts /thoughts about them is also welcome! :D)

Tf2 and 10th classes

The first 10th class we know of is the Civilian from Team Fortress Classic. He was in the VIP maps and was only equipped with an umbrella and had lower health than the other characters. The goal of the VIP maps was for bodyguards to protect the Civilian from assassins so he could get to an evacuation point.

The Civilian is not in Team Fortress 2 as a class, as it was never finished. The code was still in the game for some time but the player model was just an unanimated Scout with only 50 health, similar to the original Civilian.

The Team Fortress Classic Civilian does appear as a small cameo in Team Fortress 2 as the bobblehead seen in Sniper's van in "Meet the Sniper".

Next is the Guard dog, a fan made 10th class. Despite being fanmade, Valve has recognized it before by posting a letter from Saxton Hale evaluating the class and saying he looked forward to working with them in the future. But besides this, this has been the only time Valve has acknowledged this class.

In a Team Fortress 2 blog post from 2010, it was joking about a 10th class being rejected for not having any hats

In the Halloween Team Fortress 2 map known as Harvest Event, there is a gravestone with the text "RIP the tenth class"

In an interview with Robin Walker, a Team Fortress developer, he joked that Gordon Freeman from Half-Life could be a 10th class.

Robin has also said in past interviews that a 10th class is something Valve would like to add but at the time they were mainly focusing on game modes. In another interview he said that a new class would and up being too similar to existing ones. (I'm having to take this from the wiki as the interview pages do not exist anymore.)

Soldier seems taken aback slightly in his seat at the computer. He's never seen a dog on-base before. He must have wandered in. Still, it'd been a good long while since he'd had company of the canine kind, and his face lit up with merriment at the sight of the Guard Dog.

And then it started talking.

He was halfway through a "Here, puppy" when the translator on its back started beeping and baubling out words. If it weren't for the mechanical whirring of it, he'd have thought he was suffering another delusion. Gingerly, he held out his scarred palm for the other to accept affection.

"Well, I'll be. A talking dog." He mused quietly, and then patted him on the head with amusement as his nerves settled and came back to him. "Ain't you the cutest thing? Yes you are! Yeees you are!"

Soldier's hands smother his fur and face in tough-love, the kind only a jaded vet could give.

Silly Doodle of TF2 if they were dogs. I wanted their accessories to resemble their human counterparts, but it can be difficult because putting a dog into human clothes is hard to draw.

Scout: A Boston Terrier. A breed known for being lively and happy, it's friendly and open to strangers. Scout as a guard dog would show you where his owners keep the valuables if you give him even a crumb of attention. Also, they can be bug eyed and derpy at times.

Pyro: A Dalmatian. Duh. With a bag on their head that resembles pyro.

Soldier: Solly is an American Pitbull Terrier. The fact that it's a controversial breed makes it an even better fit! ABPTs were used in combat missions in WWI and II. In WWII they appeared often on war propaganda posters. One of the most well known ABPT was named Sgt Stubby in WWI, and he earned himself numerous medals. Stubby is probably the deciding factor. Soldier has an American flag bandana and his food bowl over his eyes. He smells faintly of rotten bbq ribs.

Heavy: An Ovcharka (Caucasian Shepherd) while originally the breed hailed from Georgia, the USSR pushed to have the breed standardized. The huge dog breed was originally bred for guarding purposes, and has a serious and protective nature. Perfect for guarding his medic. He greatly treasures his Sandvich, a stuffed squeaky toy from the bargain bin at the pet store.

Demoman: A one-eyed Scottish terrier with a sturdy body and a manly beard. My personal experience with Scotties as a dog groomer is that they are absolute assholes who are wary of strangers squeezing their ass glands. I'm pretty sure Demo would bite me too if I touched his asshole. Demo has a squeaky bouncy ball that resembles a sticky bomb, one eye, and a hat that looks like a beanie.

Engineer: An American Bulldog. Mainly this was influenced by their stocky body and their friendly personality. Bulldogs are also a very intelligent dog breed that possess high endurance, agility, and strength. American Bulldogs were bred with the intention that they would be a farm dog. I would have gone with the Blue Lacy, but it didn't feel very Engie, despite being the only breed outta Texas. Engineer dog has doggles.

Spy: A french bulldog. Both the French Bull Dog and the Boston Terrier both descended from the Bulldog, so in a way they are related. While a poodle would have fit Spy as well, Frenchies are pretty expensive in their own right, and the cost of their medical bills might as well cost 5 poodles. They're like the luxury bulldog, and I feel like the fact that Spy and Scout's breeds resemble each other makes it better. Since dogs don't usually wear balaclavas, Spy-dog got his face stuck in a pair of red/blu underwear and started wearing them ever since.

Medic: What dog is more demanding, bratty, and sadistic than a Pomeranian? Pomeranians are extroverted, lively, alert, and highly intelligent dogs of German origin. They can be aggressive to humans and dogs to try and prove themselves. They don't seem to realize how small they are, and somehow wind up ruling the house anyways, even if there are other dogs. I can just imagine Medic-dog commanding Heavy-dog, and Heavy-dog going along with whatever he says. Medic has tiny glasses and a stray hair curl.

Sniper: A dingo. Aloof, mysterious, and a bit scrawny for his size, he's an excellent hunter who can brave the scorching bush and all Australia has to offer.

this ask has got me thinking though, i was a bit puzzled on who jake would be. at first i thought maybe lil pootis, but thats not my character to use. then i thought the unused guard dog class, but that didnt feel right either. maybe pyro could be a flambo from the flame kingdom that scout was raised with! :D

RED Medic is a German Shepherd. He’s already got that dove imagery and tries to play god, so I think he’d like being called a shepherd in a twisted way. They’re also very intelligent and sassy dogs.

BLU Medic is a Doberman Pincer. They’re a breed that frequently gets their ears and tail cut to make them look scarier, and are usually assumed to be aggressive by looks alone. The dog version of BLU Medic hasn’t had the cosmetic surgery to dock his ears and tail.

But his alternate personality from the Em Blue funeral does [in the mental world] since he’s meant to look scary and off putting to people like Jules Archibald.

RED Heavy would be a Caucasian Shepherd Dog. Big old beefer of a dog. They are not for first time owners. Neither are a lot of other dogs, but these big guard dog breeds especially. They’re good with their family and wary of strangers.

RED Engineer Tf2 is a Pug because he has a lot of cosmetics for them, and they look small and nonthreatening. Engineer is 100% dangerous, but he seems less criminally insane than the rest of the team because of his personality.

I tried to find 1930s-40s pictures of pugs with healthier snouts, but the search came up short. Guess they had the breathing issues at that point too. I hope someday they’ll be bred with healthier dog breeds to undo the nose. Even if the result doesn't count as a pug.

I don’t know of RED Pyro is a man, alien or mineral, but he gets to be a borzoi dog. Imagine being another dog, and not only is this one out of proportion like a skinwalker, it’s also wearing a pyro suit and mask? They already freak people out when fully visible, so…

Also, the comedic stylings of having a big lanky Pyro and his short Engineer dad.
