To be honest I'm glad you are still critical of how things are going because it was starting to feel like everybody here and on twitter stopped caring after a few words and reopening the server, but no tangible proof things have changed for the better. And I keep seeing toxic positivity of refusing to acknowledge problems and dismissing, invalidating, or even shaming anyone who is still expressing negative thoughts, or even thoughts that just aren't positive. I felt like I was the only one still being realistic in expectations and not assuming everything will suddenly go perfect like I've seen people doing. So thank you very much!

tbh, i think the whole thought process behind how sylvie is written is that she is not attached to loki and her happiness doesn't at all depend on him in any way.

was their connection deep? did he impact her? "shatter" her world even? yes. this is why she is so angry at him. bc in her mind, he had betrayed her.

but he doesn't take up much more space in her mind. she goes on to live her life just fine without him at the end of both seasons.

loki is a different story, he is obsessed with her to the point of doing something completely "out of character" and being ready to sacrifice everything for her.

i personally love how "unequal" their relationship is in this way, but i understand that it's not the majority of shippers' cup of tea kind of dynamic.

this is an interesting interpretation! i enjoy getting to hear people's differing takes on their dynamic, so this was a fun read. and hey if unrequited is your trope then all the more power to you. you're braver than me, that's for sure.

i haven't rewatched s2 (and tbh idk if i ever will- it just didn't do it for me the way i wanted it to) but the consensus that "loki fell first and harder" def seems supported by s1 and enhanced by s2. which i think made it all the more shocking when she kisses him first. i love that little detail.

i have a different take, which is informed by episode 5- particularly the bar scene contrasted with the record shop scene. she tells him to go and live his life and move on, then immediately goes to a record shop, tells the man at the counter she had a bad day, and then cries to the velvet underground (it looked like crying, also possible she was just laying there and basking it all in, which is just as compelling in my opinion).

to me that read as someone who is trying so hard to place their feelings in a convenient little box and ignore them and then running away when it doesn't work.

sylvie doesn't strike me as someone who can sit still, especially not after living through a million apocalypses and trying to ensure her survival. and while getting a job in oklahoma might not be the same frantic pace she's used to, i do think she threw herself into it (employee of the month placard i'm looking at you!) so she has a new life, a new job, time to do things like go to the bar and get a haircut and listen to music and do everything possible to just. not. process. the annoying feelings that the citadel situation brings up. just keep moving! just don't think about it! and so when loki rolls up at her work, she tries to push him away, tell him he's the last thing she wants to deal with, get him to leave. the tone in the bar scene felt like that to me as well. like she's saying just leave me so i can stop thinking about this.

of course, loki does not want to leave her- it's just that for some reason he is physically incapable of talking about anything but the TVA, who ruined her life and she justifiably wants nothing to do with hearing about how great they actually are. he is pretty skilled at killing the mood. (i take great pleasure in rewrite fics that make a show of addressing this)

am i blinded by shipping goggles and my own projection onto her? it's possible! but to me it read as someone in denial. when we hear sylvie talk about her love life on the train in s1 (a scene i LOVE because it seems so out of left field for her) we get a very clear sense she has no idea what she is doing when it comes to romance (and then flat out says so during the blanket scene). her experience with romance hasn't been anything real, to the point where i hesitate to even use the term "romance"- just centuries of numbing herself by staying busy with a fling. she is like a shark that will just collapse if she stops moving. which we get to see her do in the record store!

that's just how i read it though! your read on it is just as valid and i like hearing all of the different takes. i am by no means trying to persuade you to join my pining sylvie agenda, just using this blog as a means of idea exchange. which i love doing. seriously it's so fun.

This could differ from person to person but I do believe that at the start, Evan genuinely just wanted to help the Murphys and wasn’t sure how to do that other than to lie and he felt trapped by his situation (for lack of a better word) and that was sort of influenced by what Jared said to him (“you’re seriously gonna tell them all they have left of their dead son is a weird sex letter you wrote?”), though of course I’m not trying to say Jared like, did that maliciously. As time went on, particularly in Act 2, Evan did start to act out selfishly and trying to use his lie with the Murphys as a means to get what he wants rather than actually helping them. I really like your posts analyzing them, honestly Evan and Jared’s dynamic is so interesting, and at the end of the day they’re both just like. Awful teenagers. They need couple’s counseling or something

So first thing, yes! I 100% agree that Evan did want to help the Murphys and try and alleviate some of their pain at the start. But there's a shift at some point throughout the play where it's less about helping them and more about helping Evan, which I think most people agree on that at some point Evan's interests shift to being more self centered— it's just a matter of when that change occurs that people disagree on.

I'm of the opinion that the change happens, or at the very least starts to happen, very early on. I would say the moment Evan's motivations start to shift is when he says the line "They didn't want me to stop." while talking with Jared (and I am going to talk about my interpretation of Jared because I have so much to say about that freak 😭). This is the moment, for me, Evan realizes he's getting positive attention for lying. And that maybe he kind of likes it.

And I've said this in my other posts, but Evan isn't admitting to himself that that's why he's doing this! I don't think he's even aware of why he's really doing this. When he says he's doing it for the Murphys, he genuinely believes that.

The moment where I think he's 100% doing it for himself, even though he doesn't realize it, is Disappear. Because Connor's memory is already forgotten and they are parading this fake version of him around, a fake version of Connor that makes Evan look better and one that is actively causing real Connor to get forgotten faster. And Evan admits in the song that it's also because he doesn't want to be forgotten, which is not this horrible awful thing to feel! Evan isn't a bad person because he doesn't want to be invisible. I don't think Evan is a bad person at all!! What he does that's bad is hijack this tragedy for himself, a thing that again, he doesn't even realize he's doing.

i would definitely agree with you that by act 2, everything is mostly for himself. Cue the "It's not my fault other people can" line. Which I would argue is probably the cruelest thing Evan says in that entire show 😭, and then we get Good for You where Evan realizes things are starting to fall apart and that Alana isn't completely unaware and Evan's hurt her and his mom cares so much and has been so hurt by what Evan has done and that Jared isn't going to always be at his beck and call to write more emails whenever Evan needs him to, and that he's also been hurt by Evan's actions. Probably the most important song in the whole musical tbh. And THEN we get Words Fail where Evan just finally has to come to terms with why he's been doing everything, and it's also such a crucial moment for Evan's character Words Fail baby I love youuuuu.

So yeah! I agree that Evan started out with pure intentions, felt trapped, and then ended up finally feeling seen. He's a complicated character that I think gets watered down to a one dimensional poor anxious bean too much, it does a HUGE disservice to his character. I love canon Evan my perfect asshole son WAAAYYY more than fanon Evan did nothing wrong ever he's too anxious to hurt anyone.

With Jared, I actually think one of the most interesting things about him is that line!! Why does he tell Evan to not come clean? He has nothing to gain from it, he isn't even using the lie to get closer to Evan yet because the lie doesn't really exist! And you can't even argue that he's trying to sabotage Evan in this moment because there's nothing to suggest Jared ever actively tries to ruin Evan's life.

Sure, he says he would if he had that letter but nothing in the show suggests that's something Jared would do. He keeps Evan's lie for him the entire show, even when he has no reason too. Jared had cause and means to ruin Evan's life, but chooses not to again and again. So I'd definitely agree that he's not acting with malintent.

How I read that line, and obviously people are free to disagree, is concern. He is genuinely worried about Evan here and what Evan telling the Murphys will do to Evan. It's not even self preservation because he has nothing to do with this yet!

And because Jared is... well Jared, him looking out for Evan is telling him not to come clean! Nod and confirm, boys. Nod and confirm. Like it's this really imperfect, messy answers right? Because he's a teenager whose go to answer is not telling people shit about what's going on with him. Like, so many of Jared's problems would be solved if he knew how to talk to people, like "Hey Ev you're my only friend and you inventing a fake friend who is your best friend kinda sucks and hurts my feelings. Also this thing you're doing is weird and selfish xoxo love Jared." But he can't say that, because he's well. he's Jared.

And then he just offers to write these emails for Evan, and then continuously tries to do shit for Evan in the second act when Evan wants fuck all to do with him it's literally insane how Jared acts. "I can't do any more emails this weekend I have to hang out with my REAL friends 🙄🙄" to immediately "wait I can help with the project please please involve me in your life" like the lie isn't really holding up there Jared 🤨🤨 and then the invite for Evan to come over and drink and just shoot the shit with him he's clearly so desperate for his friend but he's also such an asshole he had to constantly push Evan away at the same time 😭😭😭😭 OHHHH I love them.

not rude at all! but i am going to give you a huge non-answer in that i think it depends so much on who's writing, what they're writing, what they're trying to get across, there's no one answer to that. on top of that, they're writing for themselves/other women, and as long as they're getting out of it what they want, i really don't see an issue with it. there's no right or wrong, it's fiction, it serves a purpose even if that doesn't line up with what i would wanna see; it's not for anyone but them.

there are plenty of fics that don't work for me, personally, and the gender of who's writing them doesn't have as much to do with it as dynamics and the way they get thoughts across iykwim. not everything is for Me, and i'm fine with that; i write plenty of stuff that not many people like, but as long as i'm getting something out of it, that's what really matters

okay so that was VERY interesting.

tl;dr for anyone that doesnt have time to watch - ryan says that the neck-grab was more about viserys. daemon really wanted to hurt viserys and hes always seen rhaneyra as just an extension of viserys. he basically implies it was always truly viserys that daemon wanted to attention and love of, to be the partner of.

I'm really trying to figure out what he means by this, and I'm wondering if you're right and he means that Daemon wanted to be to Viserys what Visenya was to Aegon, to give him everything, to be his sword and advisor and give him an heir (though perhaps in himself rather than through being a consort and birthing heirs ?). So yes, actually I see what he means about Daemon and it's something I've never considered before although I have always thought power is more important to him that Rhaenyra... but is it more important to him than Viserys? No, from what we've seen. Honestly I do think if Daemon had been born a woman but had still been very much Daemon in every other way then he would've probably been happier with his position, assuming he was allowed to be a Visenya-type of queen - I think Baelon as a father would have indulged that though, given the type of woman he married; Alyssa was much more a Visenya than a Rhaenys too.

Being born a second son definitely pushed Daemon further from power and further from his brother than if he'd been born a daughter, and likely married off to Viserys, and those are the things he desperately seeks; proximity to power and Viserys approval and love.

The comment about Rhaenyra being an extension of Viserys is funny because I just made a post about Alicent being perceived as an extension of Otto. These poor girls just cant shake off their dads. I don't think any of the men in this show see the women as entire people, (considering how they all certainly assign worths to them based on their claims and their ability to produce children.) So it doesn't surprise me that Daemon would see Rhaenyra as an extension of Viserys rather than as a whole person. Which leads me to believe it wasn't just desire that had him groom Rhaenyra and part of the reason he pursued her, especially after she was named heir, was because if he was her consort Viserys wouldn't be able to send him away anymore. His place would be with her, and her place would be by Viserys side. Of course, when he finally gets Rhaenyra he's been burnt so many times by Viserys that he's all but given up, as we see in his conversations with Laena, so he's happy to disappear of to dragonstone and try to use Rhaenyra to fill the Viserys-shaped hole. I think his misogyny will make him struggle to see Rhaenyra as a ruler, to see her making decisions, especially ones he disagrees with. He's going to realise she isn't Viserys, and he doesn't feel the same watching her rule as he felt watching Viserys rule, for whatever reason.

Ngl I know Ryan said it isn't sexual, and maybe it isn't at the point we meet them in hotd, but... it's not crazy to me that Daemon might have loved his brother that way when they were young, even if Daemon never fully understood those feelings. They are Targayens, and Daemon did have scenes that were cut of him having an interest in men. He certainly acts in ways to get his attention that speak to an obsessive level of love that often walks hand in hand with his approach to sexual interest. And I know he hates Alicent because he sees her as an extension of her father, but there could be another element to it. It could be partly jealousy, even if it's just over the place she has at Viserys side, rather than the fact she shares his bed...

But yeah... a lot to think about.
