Thoughts On: The Last Binding Series
by Freya Marske [goodreads]
Basic Summary of Book 1: Un-magical Robin Blyth takes on a civil servant job that suddenly throws him into the middle of a magical conspiracy. With the help of his coworker Edwin Courcey, they begin to unravel and hopefully attempt to prevent a plot that will change magic as the world knows it.
Books in the Series:
A Marvellous Light
A Restless Truth
A Power Unbound
Book Recommendation For Those Who Like:
Historical Fantasy
Found Family
Mysteries
Rating: M for the nsfw scenes.
Unorganized thoughts and many spoilers below
This might just turn into a ramble on how much I like Jack Alston.
Anyway. I love the way Marske writes romance and interpersonal relationships in general. The characters feel real. Like, things get emotional and they hurt each other, but they come back together. Apologize when needed. Talk. It's an emotional maturity between lovers, between friends, between family, that I enjoy reading. Those hard conversations are on the page and not glossed over and magically fixed. (thinking about Maud and Violet where Maud didn't accept Violet running away. Thinking about Jack apologizing to Edwin. Thinking about Jack and his mom.)
I particularly like the complexity of the relationship between Edwin and Jack. Like. From the first book, you just have the sense that Jack was a bully, which he was from that side of things, but it's more complicated than that. But you don't know that then. The second book you get that Jack just doesn't care. He's mean to everyone so it's not like Edwin was particularly special. And in the third, you can see the growth from Jack, seeing that not everyone he has in good regards speak the same language of insults as he does. And from Edwin, you can see the strength he's gained from learning to love and to be loved. Seeing them interact kept reminding me that they were, in a loose sense, lovers once but they were childhood friends before that.
Seeing the the characters from different POVs was fun! I wish there was more Edwin and Robin from Maud and Violet's POV in the second book, but seeing them from Jack and Alan was nice. I didn't notice in the first book just how much of a nerd Edwin is. Makes my jock instincts want to shove him into a locker (affectionate). It's so cute how much Robin loves him and to see the ways different people notice.
So that's enough about all the other things. Time to gush about Jack lol
First book, didn't even register him as important. Second book, loved him instantly. HE'S SO MEAN!! But he helps out anyway out of some sense of responsibility!! And because Maud reminds him of his dead sister!! And they just won't leave him alone.
Watching Jack slowly finding a reason to live again was so cathartic. My chest hurts just thinking about it. To be hurt and to heal. To push on the wound and realize that at some point it has scarred over.
I genuinely really like characters who have gone through something awful, are a little unpleasant, and at some point learn to heal. I LOVE angst so much!!
Also the romance between Jack and Alan was interesting. I did like it a lot, but I also kept thinking "Give me something tender!!". Which was there between the lines of their play and the respect they showed each other. And then the last bit of the book, but at the same time, I wanted to see more of it.
Another thing that was pretty meh was that I wish Alan and Alan's nullification did more. Yes he did a lot to move the plot along as needed, but at the same time, a lot of sections in his POV, he was just a spectator watching everyone else do things. This kind of happened with Jack a little too.
Other little bits of thought
Love that it was brought up how Jack has slept with half the friend group. I was thinking it but was shocked when he was thinking it too lol
Wish we could see more with Addy and her dynamics with Robin and Edwin
It's so funny how the roman tracks became more important to the plot with each book
Took me waaay too long to realize the great threat is WW1
Wish there was more with Lady Dufey and the fae. I think it would be fun to explore and to hear more about her long life and also what happened after the contract was broken
The first chapter of the third book was so hard to read. Kept having to put it down in case I burst into tears. Haven't had such a strong reaction to a first chapter since The Song of Achilles.
I like Marske's prose. Like her word choices and sentence structure. It's both playful and devastating and I look forward to reading everything she writes.
Okay that's it. Those are my thoughts!

umm. bhaal thoughts nd stuff under the cut. ive seen a lot of stuff mischaracterising/interpreting/whatever and it bothers me. i like him.
bg1+2+3 spoilers btw.
i dont wanna seem uhhh. confrontational or anything so this is just me airing thoughts out cz its true u dont rly Hear from him much directly in bg3 so i guess i get why ppl wouldnt know or think certain stuff. and im not the worlds expert on the topic as much as id like to be. but writing gods in stuff is never easy i think, especially as a fan, since they function on totally different ideas and have worldviews we could never possibly understand, etc etc
i think what bothers me the most is the misconception that bhaal would give a shit what the urge does. he definitely doesnt. the canon bg1+2 is a human male goodguy (derogatory) and even he was still supposedly favoured by bhaal (in that achieving slayer form was from a feeling of 'divine hatred' and not an actual gift since bhaal at the time was dead and he was favoured not for this but in that he was the strongest of all his spawn (this is bg2 stuff btw i highly recommend u play both those games if u liked bg3 durge)) i actually miss how bg2 introduced that form its way better than in 3 but thats a big tangent ToT and i get why since the durge was quite literally made with it in mind anyway he didnt care about the prev spawn because their only purpose was to die anyway. but he doesnt care abt what durge does either. he would not care if he was fucking gortash. the one constant w him is that all he cares about is the end goals, the process doesnt matter at all. i cant be bothered putting screenshots in rn but both the durge's old diary and sarevok say "bhaal cares only for death. death in numbers, death in droves." and the ingame proof is in that even if u refuse to kill isobel u can still get the slayer form by agreeing to accept his gift in the temple. whether u killed isobel or not just determines if u get slayer form early. the other proof is orin, who doesnt follow him as he would ideally want either (too focused on making 'art' with death instead of actually killing) but still gets to be his chosen if u play as tav instead of durge (he also doesnt like the way shes loyal to sarevok more than him) hes pretty pragmatic
also the other thing... abt the butlers. sceleritas isnt there to ensure u are loyal, thats his own prerogative and pride as a butler. tho i think the specifics of him in general are left intentionally vague. the rest of bhaals butlers are always imps, and his own was also an imp (theyre made in his imps image after all), bt sceleritas is made in bhaals image. since he has a glued on nose and the colouring on his face looks like a skull. and the earrings are mirroring the slayers facial horns. thats a bit of a tangent tho umm anyway, my point is that durge got a very special butler for reasons we can only guess at. (tho i enjoy thinking that he really was meant more as a nanny/standin parent figure)
anyway that got sort of long. i love dad a lot. everyones durge can be different frm canon obviously... bt bhaal is an established char, nd a super interesting one (i have a lot of thoughts abt the similarities w mystra+shar especially cz of bg3 and the way sheart+gale narrative's play out bt again thats uhhhhh a HUGE tangent and im not even sure how to word my thoughts)
anyway tldr bhaal is a very hands off parent and doesnt give a shit what u do as long as u get the job done (and i love him very much 🥺)
oh also if u math the years out, durge is 20yrs old at max. and that takes the assumption that bhaal made u ASAP after he was resurrected. trivia. if u wanna read the thing wheree he gets rezzed, its the 'murder at baldurs gate' story which also comes with a rly intensive worldbuilding manual for the city which could help w fanfic or whatever u want. i enjoyed reading it (helping w dnd stuff T_T).
another edit: i doubt anyone except me is rly interested bt i have soooo much to say on the topic of how bhaal treats the urge (positively+unconditionally), sceleritas in general, and the way the urges journey mirrors bhaals own fall from grace and coming back stronger, etc etc, i already wrote half of it on twitter anyway so if theres interest i can share it here too

hello tumblr user dateamonster!! do you have any recommendations for good zombie media? my gf rlly likes zombies but has burned through a lot of the good stuff to be easily found. movies shows anime games etc, anything goes. ty!
oof good question but one im not sure im totally qualified to answer since most of the zombie media i consume is on the campier, sillier side.
i do have some somewhat more Serious zombos i enjoy tho!
the girl with all the gifts is one of my alltime favs (and ive heard the book is good too tho i havent read it) it hits a lot of the beats zombie fans will probably already be familiar with but the main character being a sort of half-zombie (makes more sense in context trust me) as well as a child born into this apocalyptic setting creates a totally new perspective and to me is one of the strongest most thoughtful pieces of work to come out of this sorta subgenre in a long time
the resident evil game series is probably a given. on the off chance she hasnt played it or watched a playthrough, that shits mandatory.
z-nation i think kinda tippytoes the line between stuff fans of, for example, the walking dead will recognize and enjoy in terms of ya know a story focusing more on the interpersonal drama of a group of survivors living through an ongoing apocalypse, and the sillier doesnt-take-itself-too-seriously stuff i personally enjoy, like the ongoing bit where theres just a big ball of entangled zombies rolling across the scenery. its the delicious junk food of tv zombies (though granted ive only watched i think the first few seasons when it was playing nonstop on syfy)
and if you want to join me in enjoying only thee most quality campy schlock..
zombieland saga! literally one of my favorite anime ever! i consider it in this sort of less serious category because the concept of undead idol girls is obviously pretty ridiculous on paper and not gonna be everyones thing, but if the premise even remotely intrigues you, please give it a shot. the story is fun, the characters are loveable and surprisingly complex beneath the typical moe girl archtype exteriors, the humor is on point but doesnt undermine the actually pretty effective emotional moments, and the music fucks! we stan!
z-o-m-b-i-e-s is like c-tier early 2000s dcom realness with a 2018 budget, better choreography, worse songs, questionable moral messaging, all reeking with a dangerous level of green hair dye and party city greasepaint fumes. ive watched it like four times. i cant totally explain it but its got like nostalgic high school musical vibes except more paranormal and much much sillier. dares to ask the question: can cheerleading end all prejudice and bring about world peace? (the answer is yes but theyll be repeating that question for three movies)
zombie prom. very similar to the above in general vibe except the music is honestly kind of good? theres a stage play and a movie which is more or less just a slightly shortened version. in a lot of ways it honestly feels like the fully realized version of z-o-m-b-i-e-s. if you watch the movie ru paul is there, whether thats an incentive or disincentive.
and to wrap it up another game you probably already know about, lollipop chainsaw. yes its problematic but i am honoring my past teenage self who averted their gaze when they walked by it on the shelves in gamestop by saying tara strong sexy cheerleader zombie slayer game is fun and good.
anyway all this to say my taste is very questionable when it comes to this subgenre but i hope u get something out of it. a lot of zombie stories kinda flop for me because the horror element gets watered down into this more actiony survive the zombo apocalypse type thing but the concept of zombies is definitely something that interests me despite this and there are definitely some good pieces of zombie media out there.
oh! and i havent read it yet, but ive heard really promising things about the book manhunt by gretchen felker-martin. not explicitly a zombie story i dont think but draws from the same place for sure. would be worth checking out i think.

Pep talk.
Actual armor... he was being dressed in actual armor. It was form fitting and not at all what he was used to, causing him to squirm a little. The adviser delivered a small smack to his ankle in response with his own tail “Stop it, this is to make sure Brutus doesn’t crush your bones.” Tirritus scolded... that got James to stop. The room was lavish with high quality rugs and curtains. Food and drink were left out for them... yet James left them untouched in his worry.
“So... Tirritus, how long have you been mum’s adviser?” James asked, it was enough to make the adviser pause and consider the question. “200 years give or take another 50 your highness.”  “So she must trust you.” “Yes, however I am simply her adviser. Anything important is referred to her, I may give my input however she may not listen to me.” “Ah.” James mulled that over as he felt the armor lock in place over his chest, tail flicking anxiously, “So... on a scale of 1 to 10, how likely is it that I’ll beat Brutus?”
That made Tirritus hesitate, as James tried to turn his head to look at them the dark claws moved his head to face forwards and away again as he tightened the straps on his shoulders. “Do you want my ‘go get ‘em tiger’ response or my honest opinion.” “Honest.” “He’s going to wipe the floor with you.” That made James tense, another swat to his leg... but gentle this time.
“It’s not because of what you are if thats what you’re wondering. Its more to do with Brutus himself. Ebony chose the strongest, fiercest and most loyal of her people to be her captain of the guard. No one other than Ebony herself has ever beat him, and he admires her for it. Your existence is an insult to him, a stain on her perfection... though others do not view you that way.” Tirritus frowned for a moment, moving away from James to collect another piece of armor. “What do you advise? If... I can’t beat him then what do I do? People will loose faith....” “Do your best.” Tirritus interrupted as he jammed a helmet on James’s head, “the Royal Challenge is not a ‘fight to the death’ event. It is a fight until you can’t anymore. So my advice is fight until you can’t, and when you can’t then stay down. It would mean when your time to become King is at hand that others will challenge you, but by then you may be stronger and more prepared. I would take the loss to fight another day... of course my Queen would say otherwise. But she does care for you, if you loose she will be disappointed but... that will not change her affection towards you.”
Tumblr media
That made James feel a tiny bit better.
“So what are the rules?” James asked.
“Choose a starting weapon in this room, you may use weapons you find in the arena also and even your opponents weapon. Magic is permitted, but Brutus has a talent of negating magical effects... so don’t expect him to bend. Any sort of fighting is allowed. If you can no longer fight or you think you’re going to die you tap twice with your hand. Can be on the ground or any surface. The gong will sound and the fight will be over, and a winner will be declared. No more fighting is permitted after the gong sounds.” Tirritus explained, those rules helped ease James’s worry somewhat. “Has anyone died in the Ember Games?” the prince inquired. “Not in the royal challenge, to kill a member of the royal family is a highly disrespectful and treasonous act if done by someone outside the family. The regular games are a different story. You only have to compete once, though if you loose and you want to redeem yourself you can always attempt a second try, which would earn some respect back. Her majesty enjoys competing... she was going to this year but gave up her spot for you.”
His mother really wanted him to try... and he didn’t have much of a say. James had to do his best. “Done, pick your weapon. You’ll have five minutes before you’re on so I recommend limbering up... Brutus is a skilled fighter both physically and mentally. He will keep you on your toes.”

totsukuni no shoujo worked really well for me from every point like the creature designs are very interesting the pacing gives u a reason to care about the charas bonds without getting bored with it it handles its themes well & i love that the strongest bond isnt a romantic type of love and its still undeniably one of the most important aspects that makes the story work. its got its twists & i never saw them coming yet none of it felt like it was only for shock value. definitely recommend.
spoiler time but
man. just. the lengths they went for each other. teacher doing anything to keep her safe when the whole time there was nothing to keep her safe from. he cant save her from herself. but that he wouldve killed for her, the fact he literally gave his soul for her, gave up the last of what he had. man it really hits. and then that shiva came back and cared got him to return to himself. like it goes both ways. and yet. the whole time there was nothing to protect.
but also the whole. shiva and the kuro no ko are the same. that whole underwater scene. idk. im sleepy i cant say it well but. that like. even if shiva isnt actually the real thing, she exists somwhere inside that kuro no ko(i read in jpn im so sorry idk what eng term is used for it & im not using a literal translation) so in a way. shes still there. theyre the same. but also not. the whole idea of there being truth in falsehoods.
bc im going to be honest with u i thought the twist was going to be like. shiva was actually teacher's kid the whole time & when something happened to his wife she ended up with a random lady so the whole thing about her not actually being related wouldnt have been a lie. then idk i was expecting a reveal like yeah since he was such a good doctor it was proof of his relation to the gods they keep mentioning. and then they hit me with the twist they did & im still like What. but in a good way. from a plot perspective it's interesting i like it but as a reader god. pain.
& i think it handles the whole "one cannot exist without the other" theme pretty well. teachers whole existence as a way of saying not everything ur told is bad is actually bad & the fact most of the creatures seem to be pretty neutral. its true they can spread the curse but that in itself doesnt really make them bad. meanwhile the whole kingdom willing to sacrifice a child for a chance at being saved from something they dont really even understand. neither are true good or bad yet portrayed as dark and light. that theres no clear answer so to speak but the two cant truly be separated.
i feel like this is definitely one of those medias thats going to stay on my mind for a while

one piece is one of my faves bc of the skypiea arc and the water 7/enies lobby arcs. (no spoilers dw) but these arcs are major turning points in the series as a whole but namely skypiea. this particular arc gets a lot of unnecessary hate and is often skipped but its actually one of the most important arcs in the whole story. the most major foreshadowing in one piece takes place here and when i say major i mean major; its the turning point in the series as well because its when you can visibly see the story turn dark, like it goes downhill from there w one tragedy after another. i feel once you read skypiea, the moment you start reading the current arc wano, you’ll see everything that was set up in the beginning fall into place. “now i see what Oda was trying to tell us back then” yk “now i see the connection”. its the one arc that cannot be skipped, and easily the most important arc beside sabaody/marineford which takes place later on.
water 7/enies lobby will always be my favorite arcs and are probably my favorite arcs out of any anime I’ve ever seen. i wish i could experience them over again just bc of how good they were. throughout the whole series luffy shows that he’ll do anything to save or help his friends. doesnt matter if he has to challenge the government head on, fight the strongest pirate in the world even if he knows he cant beat them with the level of strength he has. my favorite characters are sanji and usopp. sanji bc of his past and bc he’s the only crew member that doesnt fight with a devil fruit nor some kind of weapon which is really interesting to me bc even w/o that he’s still the 3rd strongest crewmate, and it caught my interest when i first read it. His backstory, in my opinion is the second most tragic only behind brooke and they both had my crying. Usopp because i feel that he is probably the most realistic character on the crew in his own way and let me tell you why. usopp gets a lot of hate within the fandom bc he’s a scaredy-cat. his first instinct is to always run when they go up against the stronger pirates and he lies. but i feel that he’s realistic bc not everyone can be brave like luffy and the rest, someone has to be scared. if i was him, based on some of the people they go against, I’d be terrified too. his backstory is very very overlooked & it saddens me bc everyone on luffy’s crew had it rough growing up, and yet no one seems to care abt usopp’s upbringing. i also feel like he knows his strengths and weaknesses well; yea his first reaction is to run away but he ALWAYS pulls through and that’s exactly what i love about him. no matter how scared he is, he will always get the job done but no one gives him credit for that. in one of the later arcs, usopp is the sole reason everyone was even able to survive; hell he was a major role in enies lobby but he never gets the credit he deserves. In my opinion he’s the perfect character. someone that knows he’s not strong like luffy zoro and sanji, scary, wants to be more brave, willing to step up if it means saving his friends, he cares so deeply for his friends and deserves to call himself a strawhat pirate. oh i forgot to mention but i said before that usopp lies A LOT, he’s literally a pathological liar but many of his lies are actually Oda foreshadowing the later arcs which i really really love. Oda really did his work with usopp😭
if you do continue one piece, I recommend the manga first (at least thats what i did but i only read a few arcs at a time then went back and watched it) bc the pacing is overall better and i loved every chapter i laid my eyes on. after typing this im now fighting the urge to rewatch it even though im behind on like 6 other shows rn😭i feel like i could go deeper but then I’d just be spoiling, sorry for ranting this much though!😞
ahhhh don't apologize!!!! this is amazing!!! one piece is one of those shows i love hearing people talk about bc there is so much to it and no one person's opinions are going to be the same. op has so much source material that it makes reading analyses from people who love it SO much fun to read and go through. idk i love your passion. it makes me wanna be passionate about it.
i adore characters who feel real and especially those with bolder personalities. I'd assumed Ussop was a liar just because "uso" means "to lie" in Japanese. so i figured it was a play on words. BUT i didn't know that oda uses him to foreshadow. that's def gonna make reading/watching it for the first time really enjoyable and ill be keeping an eye out for it!!!
i think i'll def be continuing the series though!!! i'm not sure if i want to read or watch it yet. my thing with manga is that i tend to BINGE like 100-160 chapters but i hit a certain point and (no matter the manga) end up dropping it bc i get distracted by something else. like tokyo ghoul is a fANTASTIC manga with strong art, compelling characters, and an incredible story but i read up to like 70 something and ended up forgetting to finish it (i plan to pick it back up in the coming months though). so ill probs just watch the anime bc it's more likely that ill be able to see it through.
i also heard that the op soundtrack is GREAT and i really like animation that flows nicely with the music. so part of me wants to experience it that way first, especially since the anime adaptation is known to be a good one (unlike tokyo ghoul).

So out of all the maknae line ships do u think vmin is the most probable or do u just ship vmin and thats why u make analysis?
Maybe this ask doesn’t warrant a long answer? I think you’re just asking simply, but I got carried away.
I couldn’t say I think Vmin is the most probable out of the maknae line ships. On the big if there is a relationship within BTS (among the members), I think it’s possible that Vmin could be. However, I can see reason to believe that any of the other maknae line pairings (or nearly any BTS pairing) could be for that matter.
I think who seems the most ‘real’ to you can depend on a lot of things, and something that might make one pairing seem real to someone might make them not seem real to another. (The only way to know for sure who they are dating is they openly tell us. Then that makes it 100% real whether it’s someone in the group or not.)
For me, and the reason I make the analysis, I just like the way Vmin feel. It’s less about how I think they’re together and more about how I adore some things about their relationship. I like the way they feel to me better than I do with Jik**k or Taek**k (though I don’t have a problem with either pairing).
And when it comes to JK, I enjoy his ships with the hyung-line more. Because his relationship with Vmin (to me) sometimes feels a little less on the soft side, while Vmin feels very soft sometimes (though they have their not-so-soft moments - see ISAC 2017). The JK x hyung pairings feel softer than Jik**k or Taek**k.
If you don’t like the soft-feeling or ‘I’m dating my best friend’ kind of relationship, it would make sense that you wouldn’t ship Vmin. I know there are a lot of people who believe in the ‘friend-zone’ and who would never date their best friend. And that might be why a lot of people overlook vmin. Because they call each other their best friend all the time. However, my sister is married to her best friend, and I love the relationship she has with him. Two of my friends, who were best friends, are also married. And these two couples, out of all the couples I know, have the strongest relationships I know. So that’s probably why I enjoy Vmin over most other ships. Because their relationship matches those in my own life that I admire.
I’ve also been around since BTS debut. I’ve loved Vmin from the beginning, but they weren’t my favorite at the start. My favorite at first was J*nmin and N*mtae for Jimin and Taehyung ships. It was watching them over the years that made me like Vmin the most.
Personal reasons for shipping Vmin aside, they have very realistic reasons for us to ship them as well. (This may be something you can argue for any ship, but I’m not going to get into all that.) The songs are a big thing that gets me to feel like there’s something there.
I don’t think that every BTS song is something the group has personally experienced. They have a big part in writing their songs (probably more now than when they began), but they still have other people writing for them, too. Or helping them write, anyway. The lyrics come from many experiences (and this is true for nearly every musician. Many musicians write songs from other people’s experiences). I think there are songs that are less personal to them (though as BTS moves forward more and more songs feel more personal - probably as they take a bigger part in the creative process).
Anyway. Back to Vmin and songs. When a song is personal, it’s always the ones that BTS wrote themselves with relation to something specific about them. When 4 o’clock was first released, we didn’t get to hear a lot about it. Namjoon talked a little about helping Taehyung write the song, but we never got to hear anything from Taehyung about the song. It wasn’t until their Unit Interview about Friends that we heard anything from Taehyung. The only thing he gave us then was that the song was written about the dumpling incident, but he didn’t say anything else about the song. It was an interview about Friends, not about 4 o’clock, but he at least confirmed what Namjoon posted (and then deleted) back when 4 o’clock was originally released. It was about Jimin.
Then we have Taehyung announcing to everyone on Vlive that he wanted to sing a romantic duet (which he wrote) with Jimin, but one of their producers told him that he couldn’t do it because the lyrics wouldn’t make sense if it was two men singing it. They recommended one of the female composers who can also sing, and Taehyung showed a small part of the song with her singing the part that he presumably wanted Jimin to sing. During this live, he was clearly upset. If you’re any good at reading emotions at all, you can tell that he was upset talking about the song. Regardless if he and Jimin are in a relationship, and regardless if he is gay (we aren’t going to go into either one of those things), the producer denying his wish to sing the song with Jimin clearly hurt. Regardless of his reasons for wanting to sing with Jimin. And this becomes a Vmin song because he specifically said he wanted to share it with Jimin. Not one of his members. Not some other male artist. Jimin. (And him talking about this in the live sort of felt like an at least partially unfiltered act of rebellion).
And finally, we have Friends. A song with a platonic title, but some deep meaning lyrics. I’ll set the whole soulmate thing aside because that’s arguably platonic as well. It’s the lyrics like: “for eternity, keep staying here” “after the cheers die down, stay” “we are each other’s mysteries” “I know everything about you” And when they are given an opportunity to talk about these songs, they don’t really give us any information. Rather than talking about the actual lyrics of the song, Vmin used Friends as an excuse to reminisce about their old days. We don’t get to hear about them staying together. And we certainly don’t get to hear what’s so mysterious about them, because then it wouldn’t be special, right?
And now since I’m talking about the possibility of relationship between Vmin, I’m going to say this. It’s the fact that they write romantic-like lyrics about each other, but only brings up the friendly ones when talking about the songs. The closest thing we got to them talking about romantic lyrics was Taehyung complaining about being told that it wouldn’t make sense for Jimin to sing romantic lyrics with him.
As I’ve mentioned in an ask before. It feels like they want to put in meaningful lyrics to each other in the songs they release, but they try to keep it on a friendly level when talking about it. That’s not me saying that Vmin’s songs to and about each other (or the ones they wish to sing together) are hard evidence of a relationship. But it’s definitely something that shows a bond beyond a typical friendship.
I do appreciate all BTS pairings, however. And I can talk all day every day about any of them. It’s just that Vmin is the one that I resonate with the most. Although any ship can seem as realistic as they do depending on who’s observing and what they’re observing, I just like Vmin the best.
Thanks for the ask!

The Freedom of Expression Ep.2 - Ghosn escapes to Lebanon
K: Hi, this is Dir en grey's Kaoru, this is the second installment of The Freedom of Expression. Um, Joe san, Tasai san, here we are again.
J, T: Yep *laughing*
J: Why are we laughing at that?
K: Well, somehow, while I was introducing you two, I was wondering whether I should also introduce the third, no, fourth person..
J: I see, I see.
K: I thought I'd leave it at that.
K: Yes, lets leave it there.
Kami: No, don't leave it there.
J: Ah, of course, we try to ignore him, he'll appear.
K: Ahh, but during the first episode, there were times without him, weren't there?
J: Sure
Kami: Ah, but I was just being quiet. I was waiting until the end to come in.
J: I see.
Kami: You played right into my hands
*everyone laughs*
J: We played into your hands? This god has a nasty personality, doesn't he? *K laughing* A god saying that?!
Kami: Of course you would tell me I have a nasty personality.
J: This god is surprisingly small, right? *K laughs a lot* ..saying such things?!
K: Okay, so lets get to the freedom of expression, the concept which we started on the radio and are now doing on youtube. Last time was our first try, how do you think it went, for anyone interested?
J: Well, just how DID it go?
T: Right, I'd like to know the reaction.
J: Yeah, I'd like to know. I'd like it to spread on social media.
K: Yes, me too.
J: Please, by all means, share this for us!
K,T: Yes
K: Right, well for our first item, over to you Tasai san.
T: Well, this is news from Tokyo Sports newspaper..
J: Oh, from Tokyo Sports? Like, is it a UFO or a monster kind of story?
T: Well, I know what you mean, but its not that today. Its about (Carlos) Ghosn.
J: Was Ghosn a monster?!
T:*laughs* No, no, no, its not that.
J: Really?
T: It was really big news at the end of last year. The news that Ghosn escaped to Lebanon. Firstly, what did you think about this, Joe?
J: Oh me? Well, Im one of those that thinks the Japanese judiciary system is terrible, so I thought it was convincing.
T: Ah, I see.
J: Of course it was an illegal thing, but for someone as rich as Ghosn, I think it was nothing.
T: Well, as for Ghosn, he is now in Lebanon, but its been said in the news that the recent worsening of relations between America and Iran will be really bad for him.
J: Can Tokyo Sports really report such a serious story? *K laughs*.
T: Yeh...We have to report this kind of thing.
J: Right
T: So, America killed Iran's number two, General Soleimani in an explosion, and with Iran calling for revenge action, the tension is such that, people are fearing WWIII breaking out. With the current leader calling on Lebanon's Shia military organization, you know the organization Hezbollah?...there is a possiblity that Lebanon could become a battle ground...in which case Ghosn would lose his place of saftety and he would have to flee from there, and might get arrested in a different country. Thats the story, how Ghosn might still be facing danger.
J: I see, direct.
T: Its really like a story from a movie.
K: Yes, thats right.
T: Hiding in a musical instrument case..
J: For sure!
K: A band came to his house right?
J: Yes, yes, he was having a party.
K: Yeh..and like hiding in the case...its interesting isn't it? *everyone laughs*
T: Its a case for a very large instrument, and the makers of it have issued a warning, that this case is not intended to be used in that way. *J, K laugh*
J: But there are not many people who escape overseas, its impressive!
K: Yeh, it really is like a movie.
T: Its great...there is even talk of making this into a movie.
J: Ghosn's story?
T: Yeh
J: Wow. Kaoru, have you any thoughts about this Ghosn news?
K: Well, while being quite simple, the scale is outrageous *laughs* I wonder how much it cost..
J: Oh, probably a considerable amount...its been said that it seems like his fortune has decreased..but it probably hasn't disturbed him too much.
T: On the issue of bail, he paid 15 billion yen, which was apparently further confiscated, but Ghosn probably doesn't give a damn about that.
J: Probably not
K: When he came out, he disguised himself right? Its also kinda interesting from that angle.
T: Oh, dressed like a cleaner, right?
K: Yes, yes, yes.
T: It seems like he thought it would work
J: Well, another thing is, the Japanese judicial system is said to be a so called 'hostage judiciary'. In Japan, the prosecutors have the right to charge people with a crime, but out of all charges made in Japan, 99.9% are found guilty. In other words, if you are charged, the court case is more of a formality, you will almost never be found innocent. It equates to one out of a thousand cases being found innocent. Now, as far as I know, the conviction rate should be a bit lower, ninety-something percent, but if you lower the conviction rate much, the authority of the prosecutors is suspected, as if the original charges were wrong. Its difficult, but a conviction rate of 99.9% is quite extraordinary. So with the fact that prosecutors have so much power, and with this 'hostage judiciary', so called criminals are pushed to confess. At first they are questioned without the presence of a lawyer, and there are many cases where foreigners confess to the crime, even if they havn't done it. The police will say to people, 'you are not leaving here till you confess'. Now, if you really didn't do it you could provide your evidence to the court, but in Japan, the court will take a self confession as the strongest evidence. So, in the end, once you've said 'i did it', you might as well have done. And even if you later say 'i didn't do it', it will only be seen as a lack if repentence, you will not be found innocent...and Ghosn must know all this. This court case is predicted to go or for 5 or 10 years, and say, if it was ten years, his life is already nearing its end. Whether its right or wrong, he probably arrived at the conclusion that he had no choice but to escape.
T: He can do it because he has money.
J: Exactly
K: Ah, its turned into that kind of conversation.
J: Eventually, yes. We are not all equal.
K: But, couldn't you say it would better that he had stayed in an orderly place like Japan?
J: Yes, yes, especially if the place he has escaped to becomes a war zone. Theres a chance that Japan might end up being the safest place for him.
T: Which do you choose, an approaching war with your freedom, or a safe place facing a court hearing?
K: Oh this is gonna be a movie.*laughs*
J: It seems likely...But who would play Ghosn? Who looks like him?
K,T: *????* 1*
J: He's the only one who could do it! If it was dramatized..
K: It makes you wonder how Japan could let this happen, Ghosn was probably surprised too.
T: So for people who are out on bail in Japan, they do sometimes make them wear gps locating device, or restrict thier movement. It seems like Ghosn has really thrown Japan into disorder.
J: Hmm, in Japan, whenever there is a happening, the measures taken against it are often 'too much'. So, if you talk to people in other countries, recommendations will differ. For example, in France or somewhere like that, a traffic accident happens, and someone dies...Well, i mean, if it was in Japan, they would install a pedestrian crossing and traffic lights, which is ok in itself, but if you do this type of thing too much, it starts to get inconvenient. But if it was overseas, a traffic accident where someone dies, they would just warn people to be more careful next time. Rather than doing sonething physical, just encourage people to be safer, and after that finish with it. In Japan, they would definitely either install facilities or place equipment, measures to prevent it happening again, but on the other hand if this is done too much, you may eventually end up with restrictions on you speech or movement, so thats something we have to be careful about.
K: Mm, if you blame other people or things, you may end up losing your sense of self responsibility.
J: Things primarily happen due to our actions, we need to remember that, but people will end up blaming other things, for a sense of security. This becomes a vicious cycle, I feel.
T: This has been excessive recently, funny stories about celebrities being criticized for saying certain things, and then nothing happening.
Kami: Um, is it wrong to be on Ghosn's side?
T: No, I think its ok.
K: Its a personal opinion.
Kami: If you were on his side, he might give you money if you ask him *everyone laughs*
T: What a wierd opinion for a god!
J: You really are working for money, aren't you!
Kami: Well, I just thought if I was rich I could be in control of everyone.
J: I see, I see.
Kami: Like if I told people to cooperate with me, they would say, yes, yes, and just do it.  Like, I would say to Tasai san, can't you write a nice article about me, and throw over a bit of cash..
T: I would be quivering
K: *laughs*
J: If it was Hiranabe san, you'd have to take him to dinner.
Kami: Yeah, I've a feeling he would say, 'Ghosn was right!'.
J: I guess so.
Kami: I mean, even if the story in the media is a joke , if someone said 'I'll give you a billion yen if you do it', you would do it right?
J: Well yes..a billion.
Kami: The real god, wouldn't be like that of course...but I'll do it for small change. *everyone laughs*
J: How much would you help Ghosn escape for?
Kami: About 10,000yen.
J: So cheap!
Kami: Its because I know my capability.
T: Isn't god supposed to be all powerful, and all knowing?!
Kami: No, I can't do anything.
J: A god who, can't do anything, strange isnt it?
Kami: Its because no-one worships me.
J: Ah, I see.
K: Aren't you just a regular old guy then? *lots of laughing*
J: And here's me thinking we were getting somewhere deep!
Kami: I only know one deep thing about this. Straight after he was interviewed by the Juicial minister, the minister said that Ghosn will have to prove his innocence, right?
J: Yes, that was mistaken, wasnt it. Completely wrong.
Kami: The rest of the world media heard this, and thought Japan was in the wrong. It is in the wrong, right?
J: Well, that person was orignally a lawyer, um, I dont know if the youtube viewers are aware of this, a defendant doesn't actually have to prove anything. Its the prosecution side which has to prove the guilt. A defendant doesnt prove his innocence at all. So if a harsh sentence is given, that means the prosecutors did thier job, and if guilt isnt proved, that means the prosecutors couldnt prove it. There is no legal situation where a defendant has to prove thier innocence. So, the justice minister saying Ghosn must prove his innocence was probably seen as ridiculous by the rest of the world.
Kami: Well, it is if its said by the justice minister.
J: Well having that kind of person in such a high position, can the rest of the world trust this country? Its a wierd story, the world's mass media have been laughing, can that kind of guy really become justice minister? But as you said, maybe he's just expressing Japan's inner feelings about this. Oh, Kami is gone! * laughing*
Kami:*laughs*  No, I was listening attentively. I was listening, and thinking, he had to run away from Japan.
J: Oh, right.
T: I see.
Kami: Yes, get away from Japan..consumption tax has risen too of course * everyone laughs*
J: Well, yes.
Kami: The Olympis will cost money too..
T: And theres that iternet tax.
K: You know a lot, dont you kami?
Kami: Ive been saving money *everyone laughs* I never have enough.
J: Are you a poverty stricken god?! *lots of laughing*
Kami *stifled laugh* Don't say that.
K: Ok, well lets wrap it up here, the second episode. Please tune in next time.
J,K, T: Thank you very much.
1* I don't know who they said here.

Hey, so I was wondering if you could help or inspire me... so, like, I've listened to Balance like 3 times all the way through, commitment twice, Amnesty at least 3 times (it's been my favorite), but I've started and restarted Graduation like 4 times and I can't seem to get into it. I don't know if it's like the sheer amount of characters introduced at the beginning or what but is there anything I can do to finally be able to enjoy it? I've gotten through the first mission.... :( ❤
oooh okay. hm the first couple of episodes definitely can be a challenge because travis has a different style and he was just starting out there. if anything i can say for sure that the amount of characters goes significantly down as time goes on and his voices get better and easier to pick apart. the pacing and editing also gets way better.
now i wouldnt necessarily recommend skipping episodes except for imp hospital [because imp hospital SUCKS] but honestly if youre having that hard a time getting into it i would maybe even recommend you actually skip way ahead to the apple arc. there’s important things that happen between that and the xorn arc but if you manage to get into it that way then listening back to old episodes gets way easier imo especially because all the foreshadowing falls into place and it’s really satisfying.
ill give you a few episode overviews for later on- episode 10 is the start of the mind control plot; it introduces a few characters so it might not be the best for you if you find the characters overwhelming, but the characters it does introduce are necessary to understand later episodes so id start there or even at episode 11 for some character work with the pcs. episode 12 is VERY good. 13 and 14 are mainly setup for the apple arc so theyre kinda slow. 15 is usually the one that manages to get people hooked in; its the point where the editing finally gets GOOD and the tension and acting in it is VERY good; this episode basically sets the bar for what most of the episodes past this are like
i wouldnt recommend skipping past 15 at all but jumping on anywhere from 10-15 and skipping most of the first semester/going back to it later may be able to help your retention
no matter what skip episode 8-9. SKIP THEM. THEYRE NOT GOOD AND GIVE PROBABLY 2 PLOT POINTS THAT DONT MEAN MUCH ANYWAY. SKIM THE TRANSCRIPTS IF YOU MUST BUT DONT BOTHER LISTENING TO THEM
idk if any of this will help you at all! graduation is a different story told in a different way to balance and amnesty. if youre looking for the mcelroys doing ooc goofs with each other or silly combat scenarios youre not going to get it very much. grad is very much character driven and roleplay/acting heavy and the way they handle battles is really shit in the first semester [and justins attitude is pretty shitty then too which doesn’t help]. i think their characters are the strongest theyve ever had and they play them very much as their own people and separate themselves from them. i think the reason i like grad so much is because of the characters. theyre complex and flawed and very fun. fitz becomes less of a bitch eventually. argo has hidden complexities. the firbolg is a cow. and the story itself has so many strengths and twists and just clever foreshadowing right from the first 20 minutes of the first episode thats very satisfying to go back and hear after the point has unravelled!
basically i think you just need to give it time. travis is just learning in the beginning but he’s really come into his own much more these days and the boys sound like theyre having heaps of fun playing and that makes it all the more fun to listen to! dont feel bad if you cant get into it tho, some stories just dont click with some people and that’s completely fine ❤️

Hey I know it's like 3:30 in the morning and not TECHNICALLY Memorial Day anymore, but I was wondering if you could do a request thats kinda angsty if you're okay with that. Maybe kinda fluffy Arthur who's comforting a reader who cant afford their therapist anymore? Only if you're ok with it.
Hello, Anon! Thank you for sending this! BTW, if you’re going through this situation, I hope you find a solution for it quickly and with ease. I couldn’t imagine losing my therapist!

Tears leak down your face as you put down your phone. The voice of the insurance agent rings in your ears still. Words like “discontinued coverage” and “maximum usage” echo in your mind. What are you supposed to do?
Desperate for help, you call your therapist’s office. They’ll certainly be willing to help you, won’t they? After all, their slogan drawls on about mental health and how anyone can be helped. Just because your insurance is being ridiculous doesn’t mean you still can’t get the help you need.
A voice answers and you explain to the receptionist of your therapist’s office your predicament, that your insurance will no longer cover your sessions. After asking for details about billing in the future, she hits you with another brick. The payments they’ll be demanding for sessions without insurance is far more than you can afford, and they’ll be asking for it on a bimonthly basis.
“But I cannot afford that!” you say to her. “Please, when I first started with my doctor, I signed a paper stating that arrangements would be made should my coverage or insurance change! Why is that not being honored?”
She gives you some spiel about how the quote she gave you a moment ago is a deduction of the normal amount they bill patients.
“If you still cannot afford the amount I told you, we can give you recommendations of elsewhere to go that may be more affordable.”
“But I don’t want a new therapist! Mine is working out just fine! I doubt that other doctors will be just as helpful. Please there must be something that can be done!”
“I’m sorry, miss, but there’s not much I can do. Listen, let me speak with Doctor Sculzman and I will see what we may be able to do. You will be contacted once your situation is explained and a plan of action can be taken.”
She hangs up the phone before you can say anything else. Dread courses through you and you sink down onto the couch, your hands over your face. What will you do now? It took you long enough to first of all determine that you needed a therapist and then to find your current one. You went through three to find her and she’s the first to help you with your problems, how to cope with them, and how to change them. Despite the length of time you’ve spent with her, you feel that you still have miles to go and you need her help to get through them. You don’t want to sink back down, not when you’ve crawled out of this hole as far as you have.
Your boyfriend Arthur peaks around the corner. You hadn’t even heard him come in. His hair’s soaked and his button, though tucked in, is halfway unbuttoned. He looks like he’s just finished taking a shower.
“Everything okay, sweetheart?” he asks.
Your lips trembles, but you nod. However, you feel a little hurt that he didn’t check on you before showering. You tell him this.
“I asked you when I came in, but you didn’t say anything. You were on the phone, so I didn’t wanna bother you further.”
“You… you did?” you ask.
He nods and he takes a step further into the room. “What’s goin’ on, darlin’?”
You sniff and put your head into your hands again. “I… I can’t afford my therapy anymore. My insurance sent me around in circles and basically told me I’ve used up all my coverage. My doctor’s office won’t give me a straight answer either. I don’t know what to do anymore!”
You begin to sob and you feel the couch beside you sink as Arthur sits. His hand settles on your shoulder. He knows a bit about the problems you’re getting help for, though not all the details.
“That’s bad business, darlin’, I’m real sorry. I wish there was somethin’ I could do.” His hand rubs over your back and you know he’s trying to reassure you. “If your doctor really cares about her patients like she claims, she’ll work with ya, sweetheart. Don’t give up hope yet.”
You lower your hands and nod, but don’t bother wiping your cheeks dry.
“Hey, look at me, darlin’.” Arthur gently guides your head around so he can see your face. His eyes grow sad and then he guides you over so your head is settling on his bare and warm chest. His hand settles on your head, cradling you to him, while his other hand pats your back.
“It’s gonna be okay, darlin’. Like I said, if your doc really cares, she’ll help ya out. Ya can’t tell me you’re the first who’s run into these problems.”
“But I can’t talk to her until this is all sorted out,” you sniff, soaking up his warmth. You’ve been seeing your doctor every week until now.
“I know, but… I know I ain’t exactly qualified or certified or whatever the hell ya wanna call it, but… I can try to help ya. I just want ya happy, sweetheart. I know I probably won’t be able to help half as good as her, but I can still lend an ear.”
“Arthur, you don’t wanna hear about my problems.” You don’t really feel like going into the complexity that, even though you love him more than anyone else, there are some things you only want to tell your therapist.
“You’d be surprised, sweetheart. I ain’t gonna judge ya, darlin’. Last word I’d use to describe you is weak or pathetic. You’re one of the strongest people I know.”
He continues telling you words of encouragement and it does help a little. He holds you like this for the longest time, to the point you wonder if his arm or leg has fallen asleep. If they have, he doesn’t show it.
After a while, the both of you fall silent and Arthur just embraces you. It’s a good thing he wasn’t fully dressed when he started, the physical contact between yours and his skin has a rather reassuring effect. He smells comforting, too. So much time passes that, despite your worries, you start to fall asleep. Arthur just kisses your forehead and tells you to rest if you want.
“Everythin’ will get better soon, darlin’. I promise. No matter what happens, I’ll always be here for ya.”

Hii uh I think I might kin a few characters but there's just. So much information on the internet and you seem to be really educated on the history of kin. So like, how can I know I'm for real? Is it necessary to have memories? Is it proper to say "in my canon?" But mainly how do I know km not fake and my mind is playing tricks on me?
Sorry just read your about saying not to ask you if you think I'm valid and I guess thats what I did. Sorryyyy. I'm just really lost and there's so much in the internet you're literally the most knowledgeable person I've found in the past hour
Sorry also the last two asks Anna also sorry for apologizing so much. But let me correct myself. I realised newly what otherkin is, and while some of it immediately resonated with me and some characters I've known forever, im still new to the culture of otherkin
Hi anon! I am really, really sorry about the wait on getting these asks answered. Like I’ve said before, my work schedule kind of sucks, and I don’t usually have a lot of time to hope onto the computer and answer asks. I could do it on my phone, but I feel like it’s easier for me to focus when I’m on my laptop.
That being said, let’s get into it, shall we?
I don’t think this necessarily counts as you asking me if you’re valid or not. You’re asking for help discerning whether or not your mind is playing tricks on you, because this is new to you (or at least, applying the concept of being ‘kin to yourself is new), and it can be very scary! There’s no need to apologize for reaching out to someone who might be able to help.
As for “is your mind playing tricks on you”... there is no way for me to personally confirm whether or not you’re ‘kin. There’s not really a set list of requirements for being other- and fictionkin, aside from “the identity is not voluntary” and “you identify as, not with”. I can’t give you a checklist that you can peruse through and reach a solid, undoubtable conclusion regarding your potential nonhuman identity. I would if I could!
But our experiences as a community are so varied that there really is no one way to be ‘kin, so there’s no one way to know for sure. That’s, personally, why I do love being alterhuman - I think there’s something beautiful about looking inside yourself for the answers.
The advice I can offer you is to take a deep breath and maybe take a step back. There’s no rush to know anything right away. You’re got your whole life to figure it out. It sounds like you had some sort of click when first learning about ‘kin, and I think that’s absolutely worth looking into, but keep in mind that questioning can take months or even years. Sometimes it doesn’t - some of my strongest kintypes i just knew, and hardly questioned at all - but especially in the beggining, when you’re new to this all, I think it’s worth it to take your time. Meditate on it, or if you can’t meditate, keep some kind of journal regarding your thoughts and feelings - I recommend a physical journal, one you can write in with a pen or pencil, but if that’s unavailable then perhaps a sideblog or a word document would do as well.
For the record - no, you don’t have to have memories to know you’re ‘kin. People are otherkin for a multitude of reasons, and not all of us have believe our kintypes are the result of a past life, so of course some ‘kin don’t have memories. That doesn’t make their identity any lesser than anyone else’s. And not everyone has canons, much for the same reason! It’s definitely common, and I have quite a few canons that I like to talk about, but it’s not exactly required on the curriculum here.
Knowing that you’re ‘kin is an intense process. it involves getting to know yourself, which some might say is a very difficult thing to do. Internal discernment can be tough to understand at first, but once you get the hang of it, it can be a nice feeling. And at the end of the day, if you realize that you’re not ‘kin after thinking that you were, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
If you need more help or have any more questions to ask, please do so! I’ll try to answer as quickly as I can.

FAST AND FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS AND SHAW (SPOILERS)
quick disclaimer im a huge sucker for the fast and furious movies, like it might be one of my favorite long times series and yes im aware they're not good but theyre so ridiculous i cant help but find them entertaining. that being said this isnt an official f&f film which gives it room to be ever wilder and i have no words. so i know my thing is usually technical reviews but this was so genuinely awful from a technical viewpoint that it doesnt warrant that big of a breakdown. cinematography while cleans, was boring. lights were flat, sound was horrifyingly loud like, why? direction was also not great. the acting was cartoony and the actors couldnt deliver the ridiculous script with a straight face. and the editing, oh christ, it was absolutely terrible. lets not even talk about how it just throws any hint of physics, time and logic out the window. that being said i still thoroughly enjoyed this movie and let me tell you why with spoilers, skip to the end for non spoilery final thoughts
oh man, what can i say about this movie, it was bonkers from start to finish. the technical weak points were definitely its strongest points entertainment wise. the fact that normal human being Dwayne Johnson can grab a helicopter with his bare hands and throw a chain at a bobbin that winds itself without the force of the helicopter flying away in between is incredible in all meanings of the word. shirts and pants materialize out of thin air and the cut from night to day that happened from one shot to the next made me laugh so hard i choked on my popcorn and raised my enjoyment level of this movie 100 percent. the cameos that i was absolutely not expecting were hilarious. the script was so bad that the whole this was one big joke and it was great. there is not a single aspect of this movie that tries to take itself seriously. the action was big and unnecessarily loud but it was well choreographed (except the part where the rock was in a chokehold and you could literally see him tapping out before the cut but it was also funny so its ok) and it knows that its just being as flashy as it can for you because thats want you want out of this movie. there is no thinking that went into this movie whatsoever and i love it.
this is a big, dumb, hulking, stupid, ridiculous movie that doesnt try to be anything else and i have mad respect for that. its very much like the rest of the franchise so if you dint love those this one isnt going to change your mind but if you enjoyed the other ones even a tiny bit, watch this one. i love how balls to the wall wild this is with its so bad its good frick it attitude. if any of this sounds appealing to you id recommend you watch it if can. that ebing said i have to give it a 1/10 technically but to really experience and enjoy this movie correctly you have to abandon all rational thinking and once you do its a solid 8/10 or above entertainment wise.its so much fun if you want to turn off your brain

Rec List #1 Theme: 2018 Favourites
One of my fandom resolutions is to rec more in 2019. I’m going to post rec lists for some of my favourite Nick fics divided up by theme/content/ship or whatever I fancy throughout the year. It seems fitting that my first rec post of 2019 should be my favourite Nick Fics of 2018. If you’re interested in my Harry Potter themed recs, you can find them over on my other blog @writcraft under the tag #writ recs where I’m undertaking the same initiative.
This is by no means an exhaustive list - I’m limiting myself to ten recs per list and it is very difficult, I could have recced many more. I’ve read and enjoyed a whole raft of terrific stories and this rec list is simply based on my personal tastes which may not be everybody else’s cuppa. Please heed the content warnings the author has flagged on AO3 in each case, none of my recs include the content tags.
#1. Ten Track Sophomore Album by @junkshop-disco
Nick Grimshaw/Harry Styles | 4,228
Nick has always lived in noise, been the cause of a lot of it, but one day a boy writes him into a pop song and the whole world dissolves into static.
It doesn’t happen like that, not that easy, not that linear, but that’s the heart of it, the soul, if these things have such a thing.
My Rec: The Nick fic of 2018 is undoubtedly the final installment of junkshop-disco’s incredible Doodle of a Surface Life but that has quite rightly garnered so many recs by now if any Gryles reader hasn’t yet indulged, run, quick, what are you waiting for? I love DOASL with all of my heart, but I’m also a sucker for angst and I wanted to highlight this equally terrific fic in my rec list. The structure of this story, in which Nick loses his ability to hear music, is so cleverly done. It’s a very skilled writer that can create an entire fic around sound and make it come alive, and junkshop-disco manages it brilliantly. The fic reads like music, even as it describes the absence of it and it’s a stunning piece of writing. If you like your Gryles contemplative and angsty with confident, lyrical prose, this is the one for you. Junkshop-disco has such a terrific way with words I highly recommend reading all the works by this author. Every single one. But when you do make sure you take a moment to stop by this beautiful story and leave it all the love it deserves.
#2. Tell Me It’s The Strongest Shape by @louandhazaf
Nick Grimshaw/Elgar Johnson/Louis Tomlinson | 73,224
Nick and Elgar have it all. They’re famous, successful, and engaged to be married—and sometimes they play with others.
When uni student Louis gets street cast by Elgar for a GQ photoshoot, he's drawn into Nick and Elgar’s complicated relationship.
They've always invited mates into their bed. It doesn’t ever mean anything. Until… it does.
My Rec: This is such a great exploration of polyamory and the complexities of open relationships, and the author took a great deal of time developing the relationships between the characters and really working on highlighting some of those difficulties. I tend to gravitate towards fanfic where I care deeply about the characters, and although Elgar seems terrific I don’t have the same fannish relationship to him as I do to Nick and Louis so I was curious to know how I would respond to this fic. Basically, the author killed it. I felt such a deep investment in Elgar, Nick and Louis throughout and everything just flew by as I was reading. It’s also really fucking hot. Like, REALLY. Brilliantly done. I loved it.
#3. Let The Boys All Sing And The Boys All Shout For Tomorrow by @lunarrua
Nick Grimshaw/Harry Styles | 18,429
It's February 1988. Thatcher is in power. There's a new drug sweeping through the clubbing scene. In Manchester, it's the eve of a major protest and a new musical movement. And when Nick finds Harry looking lost outside his favourite chip shop, it's the start of a weekend that will leave an indelible mark on both their lives.
My Rec: I saw the summary for this fic and actually yelled at my screen when it popped into my inbox. Gryles, set in Manchester in the 80s? Hell yes. The fic itself certainly didn’t disappoint, it’s absolutely beautiful. The author writes a well-researched, confident piece and the result is stunning. The atmosphere of the whole story is captivating and you can feel yourself transported to the heady days before the Manchester music scene shifted, the anxieties of the AIDS crisis and the fragility of the relationships formed during that period. The Harry of this fic has a transient quality which evokes the nostalgic reflection on a different time in our not so distant past. A real triumph. I loved this story with my whole heart.
#4. Séjour by @silveredsound
Nick Grimshaw/Louis Tomlinson | 6,288
It is so quiet, which should be conducive to concentration, but Nick is bored and listless and lonely. He’s been there for two days and wants to know where the helpful lady is who’ll deliver him a gamine but takes-no-shit housekeeper who he can fall in love with without words. Words are not his friend.
“Where is my Love Actually moment?” he asks the ceramic kitchen sink as he pokes holes in the cover of one of the M&S ready meals he brought over with him.
«≠»
Nick’s got writer's block. Louis is a master of distraction.
My Rec: I’ve loved a number of stories by Silv this year and I was swinging back and forth between this and others, but there’s something about this little fic that has wormed its way into my heart and has taken hold so this is the one I’m choosing. As I said in my earlier reblog rec, this has such lush, evocative prose it perfectly captures the sense of a fleeting summer. There’s a seductive quietness to it, and a lovely unfolding of the story through snippets of tasting notes left by Louis on bottles of wine and Nick feeling a little bit lost and searching for words as he struggles with writer’s block. Two boys find one another in the warmth of a sleepy French town and it’s beautiful. Really wonderfully done.

Nick Grimshaw/Harry Styles | 1,613 (Make It Worse) and 2,322 (I’ll Do What You Like (If You Stay The Night)
He’s looking at Nick with that soft, terrible look in his eyes, the look that tells Nick the two of them are probably something.
My Rec: If anyone other than Jiksa had told me they were planning an angsty fisting fic series I would have been like umm really? But of course, it’s Jiksa, so naturally I found myself sobbing at the raw, devastating intensity of the story. Jiksa deftly weaves the intensity of the physical act itself into the emotional tumult of Harry and Nick’s relationship in a way that’s incredibly beautiful. A bold, brave, superb piece of hot, confident writing, rich with emotional complexity. Gorgeous.
#6. Constantly on the Cusp by @shiftylinguini
Nick Grimshaw/Louis Tomlinson | 6169
It’s 5 in the morning, and Nick’s got an alarm going off, an unexpected bed full of pop star, and a nation to wake up.
It’s far too fucking early for this.
My Rec: UNFFFFF. I love Shifty’s writing. Like, an obsessive amount. I was so thrilled when Shifty started writing Tomlinshaw I didn’t know quite what to do with myself. It’s actually hard to believe this was Shifty’s first Tomlinshaw, because everything about the fic felt like they have been writing them for years. Louis is sleepy, horny and pissed off, Nick is awake, horny and wondering what it all means, and together they have this scorching hot, sexy moment. Nick’s internal monologue  gives us so much insight into their relationship and the fic offers a lovely, warm, hopeful moment at the end. Fantastically written and a sexy delight from start to finish. Loved it!

Nick Grimshaw/Harry Styles (Genderswap Femslash) | 8,148
Harry’s eyes flicker between Nick’s eyes and lips. “I just want to be your–”
“Baby,” Nick says softly, cupping Harry’s jaw, “you already are.”
Nick and Harry have a long-overdue conversation.
My Rec: This was the first genderswap Gryles fic I have read and I absolutely loved it. The relationship between Nick and Harry feels so perfectly them and there’s a lovely warmth to the whole story. It’s light and funny but also contains moments of real emotional depth and those first time explorations and the hesitancy of admitting to being something more than friends is handled in such a terrific way. It’s a gorgeous story with wonderful writing and I loved every minute of reading it.
#8. let’s make some new rules by @camiii
Nick Grimshaw/Louis Tomlinson | 12,743
A coffee shop, a Christmas party & a fake date to make sure no one gets laid at the end of the night.
My Rec: This was such an enjoyable read. I love camiii’s Tomlinshaw, and seeing this pop up was a wonderful surprise. Barista Louis agrees to be Nick’s fake boyfriend as he pines over an ex that definitely isn’t worth his time, and they become closer in the process. The pace of the story is wonderful, the flirting is brilliant and despite some misunderstandings and Nick’s no good ex trying to fuck things up, the ending is warm and hopeful. A lovely story, full of festive cheer. Thoroughly enjoyable.
#9. I’ll be seeing you by @daretomarvel / renlyne
Nick Grimshaw/Harry Styles | 11,481
It’s 2028, and Nick’s bought a house.
My Rec: I love Ren’s writing and this Notebook inspired Gryles is a beautiful treat of a story, in which Nick starts buying little bits for his dream house. It’s hard to believe this story is just over 11,000 words because the world the author creates is so rich, detailed, layered and complex. The relationship between Nick and Harry has all of these gorgeous details and nuggets of history as it grows and develops, seedling-like, into something that might just be everything they’ve both been searching for. It’s a warm, hopeful, beautiful story but as it’s Ren, it manages to still tug at the heartstrings in the best kind of way. I read this again as I was putting my rec list together and did so with a lump in my throat, full of feels for the Nick and Harry of Ren’s universe. Gorgeous writing with bags of emotional intensity. I loved it.
#10. All I’ve ever had are love songs by @candybarrnerd / icarusinflight
Nick Grimshaw/Louis Tomlinson | 21,688
Things are finally coming together for Nick.
Nick is the DJ of his uni's radio stations, and he passively aggressively dedicates a song to Louis.
My Rec: Icarusinflight is another author who was already on my periphery from Harry Potter fandom who wrote their first Tomlinshaw fic this year and I was so thrilled to see them writing in this fandom and I’m very excited about their upcoming 2019 projects which also includes fics featuring the 1D boys in various ship combos. I love uni AUs and I hadn't read one for a while, so this was such a treat. I loved how Louis is sharp, sassy and confident but with niggling insecurities. Harry was so affectionately humorous in this story and Nick’s voice is wonderful. This is a really well-paced, enjoyable story with a hot af first kiss that deserves a mention all of its own. The music references, the tea and the cameos from various 1D members are all terrific and the writing is brilliant. Can’t wait for more from this author this year.
Bonus Rec: I was meant to limit this to just 10 recs but I also wanted to give a quick shout out to @nightwideopen. I’ve said this in previous rec lists before, but I am constantly impressed by the quality of @nightwideopen‘s writing and the way they explore things such as asexuality and gender dysphoria which can be harder to find in a relatively small fandom. I’d particularly rec so far (it’s alright) and i’ve been thinking lots about your mouth from this year, both Tomlinshaw.

Hi there G! If it's possible, may we please get an opinion on our rp? Regardless, thank you for your attention to this ask and hope you have a wonderful day ahead!
absolutely !!! your url is very unique and already it makes me interested in what the rp is about, so i think thats a good choice, but it does also leave things quite vague and up in the air as to what your rp is about. like it doesn’t give much of an impression to begin with.
your icon is… pretty bland from what i can see. it just looks like a google stock image of a house and that would be probably one of the reasons why i wouldn’t click onto your blog because it’s just.. low effort?
unfortunately, once i click onto the blog, i kinda get that feeling in general. just low effort. mainly in terms of aesthetic / look. the blog is quite empty and plain, a lot of white space, it looks only half complete, and filled with stock standard photos. it doesn’t really tell me anything of the rp, or set any tone, unfortunately. i think it’s probably quite discouraging to potential rpers, because in this day and age unfortunately rps need a little bit more especially when it comes to first impressions. i’d really recommend a makeover and trying to fill in the blank space, or asking someone to help you with graphics - i know what its like to not know a lot about aesthetics / graphics / etc, but look at other rps and try to kinda sense the aesthetic / tone/ mood they use and try to think of how you could set the same for your own rp !!!
i really like the simplicity of your plot, and i think it could go really far, but i think you need to add a bit more of a unique spin to it. so far, it kinda just sells like a rp for you, and your own characters, and it doesn’t really have much of a hook. try to think of original ideas as to why people should join this rp, and not another town / city rp. what makes this rp unique? what sets it apart? what will you give members, that other rps cant?
i LOVE how much you encourage diversity. its so so important and appreciated, and i think thats your strongest point, however, the rest of the rp is kinda weak, or not as engaging. as an admin, you’re quite lovely, and warm and easy to talk to, though, so i really wouldn’t want to see people deterred from your rp for shallow reasons - but unfortunately rping can be quite shallow sometimes and if you want to stick out, then you gotta put in effort and work into making your rp really be original and look popping!!! you’ve done a really good, enthusiastic job so far, but i think you have a while to go before you’re fully ready to open and go !!
good luck!

Pros/cons of dating Elizabeth, Marcy, Danielle, Imani and Antartica ?
Elizabeth
Pros: Shes super loving and very easy to get along with. She'll take you to new and exciting places, and her excitement is super infectious. You'll never be bored if you're with her, and she'll constantly give you physical affection. Shes also a really good cuddler, and will cuddle with her partner constantly. She'll constantly compliment her partner, often being just super frickin’ proud that shes with the person shes with. She'll be like Will Smith is with his wife. It's glorious.
Cons: Her mood swings can give some people, including herself, whiplash and she's spontaneous and can be reckless, especially when shes teamed up with somebody thats equally reckless such as Danielle or Jacqueline. She also has times where she doesn't see reason to continue living, and has made suicide attempts in the past, and she has times where she'll go from super affectionate to stone cold for a few hours. She's also a  s u p e r  emotional person. She feels everything very intensely, and when she's angry... let's just say her partner best leave her to calm herself down or else they might find her anger directed at them.
----------------------------------------
Imani
Pros: Shes a super good cook!!! Like!!! Amazing! 11/10!! Shes really passionate and will not hesitate to tell the people/person she loves that she does love them. The best cuddler. That's all that I need to say. Her hugs are like being hugged by a fucking saint. You instantly feel nice when she hugs you, 11/10 would recommend hugging her. She loves Marvel with her entire heart and soul, has a huge ass comic book collection, and will show her partner all of her little things that shes collected over the years. She really loves Deadpool. Mainly Ryan Reynolds Deadpool, but Deadpool in general. She's a really good singer and will sing you to sleep if requested, and shes also super wise. She knows a lot about almost anything and will give you advice on what to do and is super flexible, both physically and emotionally and will do whatever she needs to do to make sure that her partner is comfortable.
Cons: She has episodes where she completely breaks down, and it goes one of two ways. She either is completely silent and still for a solid 3 days, or is completely manic and angry at everything, and often drinks way too much in that time frame. Like more than usual. It gets BAD. The only person who can calm her down or really soothe her in those two episodes are Danielle, though her partner may be able to after a couple tips from Danielle.
--------------------------------------------
Marcy
Pros: She is also a good cook! Very good! 11/10 would recommend eating her food! She's also very affectionate, and will constantly show you and tell you that she loves you. She'd also make sure that her partner is comfortable, and will always be down to cuddle. Her and Imani make the strongest cuddle team in the multiverse. Being cuddled by both of them at the same time is like seeing the faces of the gods. Very nice. Would recommend cuddling with one or both of them. Shes also very neat and orderly most of the time despite her mental state being cluttered and hectic. She has really cool pets who will also love her partner. Especially her indoor-outdoor cow.
Cons: She has really severe PTSD and has nightmares, panic attacks, she can't see lilacs without having a breakdown, certain things stress her out to the max, certain words/songs/places etc., will send her spiraling. She will snap at you if you say something like "why cant you just get over it?" You could completely wreck your relationship with her if she feels like you don't get/at least try to understand what shes going through, or if she feels like you are making it out to be not as bad as it is. She's struggled with it for a very long time, and has gone through a shit ton to get where she is today, and will try to literally fight you if she feels like you don’t see how serious it is. She also gets hurt a lot, and she struggles with alcoholism and a cocaine addiction, much Danielle. You'll have to stand by her at her worst and her worst is B A D
---------------------------------------------
Danielle
Pros: She's always super down for whatever, she's a go with the flow kinda person, and is always up for exploring new places, doing new things, etc. Much like Elizabeth, you'll never be bored around her. She's always doing something spontaneous and random, even more so than Elizabeth and Jacqueline combined. There's never a dull moment when shes around. She knows everything. Her knowing everything skill is very useful for so many things, I cant even begin to list the possibilities. She's a really good dancer at all types of dance, and will dance for her partner, or even teach her partner how to dance. She's very skilled at playing most string instruments, and has an extensive collection of string instruments in her apartment. She's also an amazing artist, and will paint pictures of her partner or give her partner different pictures that she's painted.
Cons: Shes not very emotional. It would take her a little while to fully open up to her partner, and even then she would be hesitant and suspicious. She gets very angry if you lie to her. She cant stand it, and she'll know if you lie to her. And if you do... run. You wont come out without a scar or two if you're lucky enough to escape with your life.
---------------------------------------------------
Antarctica
Pros: Antarctica is open to a lot of different things. She's fine with anything from cuddling to exploring to dates in fancy places, and anything else you can really think of. She would learn as much as she could about her S/O to make them happy. If something were to put her S/O in danger, she wouldn't rest until she could make sure they were safe.
Cons: She may be okay with physical affection like cuddling, but she is NOT good at it. She can't stay still, though she really tries. She would have a tendency to be a bit too protective of her S/O, unintentionally making them feel like they're being babied from time to time.

My thoughts on Sonic Forces
For an actual review I have played a good portion of the game, I've gotten more than half completed in 3.5 hours and it would have been faster if not for the lacluster physics. The level design is ok, I mean you have multiple pathways every now and then but it's not always consistant and it feels like a step back from Generations, a game that came out 6 years ago. The physics aren't the worst, you can work around them, but the levels aren't designed with the physics in mind as on multiple occasions I find my self at the mercy of said physics and the level itself
By far the best aspect of the game are the classic levels, the physics still give me problems but if you can learn how to use them to your advantage you can do quite a bit of amazing things. The drop dash doesn't quite work like it does in Mania but that is to be expected, and if you got a lot of use of it in Mania then trust me when I say you'll get a lot of use of it in Forces as the enemy placement works in your favour and the level design is spaced out a bit more than in Mania allowing you to pull of some amazing things with it.
Now on to the Modern gameplay, I'll be honest Unleashed, Colours, and Generations all have better modern gameplay, mainly due to the level design and the drifting mechanic. By removing the drifting mechanic they hindered themselfs in their level design since Modern Sonic has very stiff movement, I constantly find myself attempting to drift on reflex because there are many spots in game where it would be useful and would most certainly make the gameplay much smoother. Now to the level design, to refrain from restating the same thing again I'll instead focus on the core of the design, IE: How does it feel to play. The level design at most times feels like it had Generations or Unleashed Sonic in mind, as the physics tend to halt all momentum and allow Sonic to stop on a dime. He doesn't have much weight, the Adventure games worked around this by giving him a floaty jump that worked for its level design, the Boost games worked around this by allowing for the transfer of momentum from land to air and allowed you to be more extravagent with your movements, and Forces falls short in that regard. I constantly find my self dying at the hands of Modern Sonic's air physics, his ground physics are fine, certainly they could be worked on but his air physics are horrendous. Turning in the air seemes out right impossible and leads to many deaths due to the many do or die situations the game throws at you, that isn't even to mention the homing attack, I swear it only locks on when it feels like it, and very rarely to an opponent that you want to hit leading to more deaths. And the homing attack chains are back, but thankfully they aren't always mandatory to progress and seem to be somewhat easy to navigate through, I feel that if Sonic had Shadow's homing attacks my problems would be fixed. Now for the boost gameplay, it's fine I haven't found many changes from Colours or Generations so at least thats constant. And finally the level design, well the 2d segments feel unnecessary and disjointed in comparison to Classic Sonic's but they can be played, I just wouldn't recommend looking for the red rings on your first play through and just stick with completing the level. Trust me you will have a much easier and fun time, and won't be forced to back track in a stage that isn't designed to allow it.
Now on to the final gameplay style as Shadow's is simply a much more polished version of Modern Sonic, I'll be talking about your CAC and or your Avatar character. The gameplay style reminds me of the Adventure games yet feels different enough to represent itself. Honestly I don't have many problems with the gameplay, the only ones I have seen and felt are your characters speed and how momentum seems to drop to 0 the moment you jump and causes many infortunate problems due in part to the level design again. I know it sounds like I give it a lot of fleck but it just doesn't feel right in correlation to whoever your playing as's speed. Now on to the wispons, they're fine I suppose could be better but this is the first time they've used them so it's all new territory for them and they can work on it. I personally mainly use the Burst wispon as that one feels the best compared to the others and can handle most of the enemies the game sends to you, and on the subject of enemies I have to praise the game for it's enemy placement, it's not too cheap and you can usually see them most of the time and you have ample time to react. Now the controversy over the removal of lives, well it's ok but it kind of makes amassing a large ammount of rings obsolete and feel like a wast of time as you get nothing but points for it and not many lives like many are used to. And now Customization, there isn't much to say really, is doesn't effect gameplay so it isn't all to notable. But I do enjoy collecting different clothing options especially the SOAP shoes but that doesn't quite matter now. Oh and the different species have different abilites so be mindful of that.
And now that leaves us with the story, I think it's the strongest aspect of Sonic Forces. It's by far the most entertaining story since Adventure 2 at least in my opinion. And to not spoil anything I really enjoy the character interactions and how at points it gets you thinking like a good story should. The world map changes depending on your point in the story so thats a nice addition, it brings back memories of Unleashed and Colours to an extent. Over all I really enjoy what I've played so far, and would I recommend it to a beginner? No I wouldn't I would recommend it to a veteren however. But for a beginner I would recommend Colours or Generations. For my rating on the game I would give it a 8.9/10: it has some short comings but overall it's a pleasant experience. It also has amazing music, as per usual.
