You know, I really wish we knew more about the contents of Cassie's book, Mindswarm.

I know we can't know everything that's in it, I'm just wondering about general topics and what's in that 25-step process for improving mental efficiency. We can assume one of the main topics is how to multitask considering that's something she's known for and I believe Milla mentions it when she's talking with Raz about how she's multitasking, but what else is there?

The reason why I'm wondering this is because I've got a potential headcanon involving her book.

See, when you look at her section of the mural in Psychonauts 2, we get the following dialogue:

What's catching my attention is the mention of mental compartmentalization. Why it's catching my attention is because I've been thinking about Sasha's backstory and his mind cube. He's all about compartmentalization in his mind, and he had to figure out how to compartmentalize everything so well.

I'm still rotating some thoughts about this but I think it would be interesting if in Cassie's book, it talks about mental compartmentalization, and Sasha read her book when he was younger and took the compartmentalization aspect to the extreme we see in the games.

It would make sense. The mental compartmentalization could be part of that 25-step process for improving mental efficiency. It was a popular book that came out before the days of the Psychonauts, so Sasha could have read it when he was younger. We don't know if his dad was psychic or not (personally I think he wasn't) so he could have been alone as a psychic and used the book to learn more, and we know Sasha is a nerd. He could have wanted to use the improving mental efficiency steps, and then took the compartmentalization part to the extreme (which, oh boy I'm going to have to think more about the potential reasons why he would have wanted to do that).

I just think it could have been neat.

One thing that kills me about Alyou is that for their relationship to develop you kind of have to address and utilize the isolation that goes unsaid in the game.

Like, we know Robin isn’t some social outcast. She enjoyed her work and was pretty outgoing. The only live interaction we get to see with another human is with Hal where he says she’ll be missed. She quite literally abandons everything to investigate Sam’s death on a harsh alien planet on the far reaches of the galaxy. She chooses to make herself an outcast. Anyone close to her that hears that is counting the days before she’s assumed dead and missing.

Al-an on the other hand is actively seeking his own people. The entire game is him looking for the other precursors, a goal we can only assume extends well beyond the game. Of which for Robin we can only assume two outcomes: they find the architects within her lifespan or they don’t.

If they do find the architects, how does their relationship fair? Does Robin get sent back to human civilization a hero to architects but a nobody to her own people? There’s no guarantee if she wrote about the precursors anyone would even believe her. Or, doing so makes her and the architects a target for Alterra. There’s no guarantee she’d ever be able to find a job she loved ever again, or, best case scenario her writings about the species make her famous. What then? Sure she might have money and fame, but she’ll no doubt never be able to talk to Al-an again with loads of questions still unanswered.

But what if Robin brings Al-an with her back to the human world? She doesn’t seem to have a lot of faith in humans not acting terrible, trying everything from putting him in a cage to keeping him as a trophy. He might get a kick out of being a science subject at first, but we know he’s not quick to make friends. Maybe he shares some advancements with the humans? If he trusts them that is.

The same goes in reverse in what if Robin stays for some time with architect society? They’d no doubt want to learn everything they could about humans resources willing. However it took Al-an a whole game to understand the nuances of human socialization before they even let him near one. I can’t imagine Robin being comfortable in a whole society full of very tall, very advanced, and very nosey aliens. Best case scenario Al-an shares his etiquette and respect with the other architects or they mostly ignore her. Even with this outcome Robin is still in a world not built for her in mind. She can still make friends with the architects, but they’d no doubt feel clinically asocial.

Then of course the third option, both are fully isolated. They neither find the architects and Robin chooses not to return to human civilization. They both have eachother to keep company, but they’ll always be alone. Humans are designed to seek other humans, and architects no doubt feel the same being social creatures. Sure one another might be “good enough” but there will always be that unmistakable feeling of solitude. Alone together, till one of them dies.

Then what? Does the other move on, driven purely by their desire for scientific conquest on the far reaches of the stars? Adopt a pet and live their life alone like Maida?

The closest thing to a perfect ending is that both the architects are alive and Robin chooses to return to human civilization, but both species are able to build a good working relationship. Both Al-an and Robin are regarded as heroes on both sides and still have the ability to talk every once in awhile. It would be really neat to see precursors join the supporting cast for subnautica 2, being our access port for advanced tech. But then us Rob-an shippers have to face the idea that their relationship would probably end with just friendship or both would still be ostracized for being weirdos

In any solution though there has to be some compromise. A perfect ending isn’t necessarily possible.

one of those Redesigns.

i feel like, not quite being a fan of viv, i know where her art style and design choices are coming from and we quite agree on a lot of it, its very influenced by 2000s scene culture. i don't think her designs would hit the same way if that scene influence was not present. its present in the fur, the stripes, the face shapes and colors. i think it's charming, and i think a lot of designs iron that out to make her designs less tumblr sexyman or whatever. and thats fine, but as a fan of all those 2000s scene designs, i don't really want to ruin what i find appealing about her designs and art style. i just want them to be more grounded, more understandable, and less obnoxious.

so for AD here, i just wanted to amke him more spider like and figure out his face shape. i like his face shape, its very flowy and fun to draw, but it doesnt make any sense. i tried to make his side? hair into cheek fluff, he's some kind of furry spider and i gave him a sort of diamond/triangular shape to his head to emphasize that. his hair, which is sooooo 2000s scenedog, i couldn't NOT keep that its one of my favorite things of that era. its goofy and obnoxious, but honestly, i like that.

i think there was wasted potential not making one of his spider eyes to be his eyebrows. (raven, anyone?) i think it allows the design to have these different eye colors without making him TOO special for those odd colored eyes. the rest are just next to his eyes, i think you can place them in any different configuration and it works tbh. i also gave him some spiky pedipalp like mouth appendages to add to the spider motif and made one of them gold, instead of one of his teeth. i think its a bit more eye catching that way.

the lower body is basically the drastic design change. he's a spider, but he doesn't have 4 pairs of limbs or even an abdomen. i gave the abdomen some fluff, because tarantulas have fluffy abdomens, and i removed his extra arms (clutters the design and silhouette too much) and gave him 3 pairs of legs in a sort of squidward type of leg style. i can see him skittering around on his multiple legs, while allowing the shape to be sexy since he's trying to be sexy.

with this design, i feel like he has more freedom with posing without his silhouette being compromised by so many long spindly things. i love long and spindly, but you need to balance it out too. big round shapes are just as fun as thin spiky ones.

the rest is just my personal touches as an artist who likes 2000s scene dog art. me and viv tend to converge on design sensibilities, but i think i have more tact and especially more subtlety in my designs than her. tee hee

Travellers Rest: god this game is it. my lil auadhd brain loves it. i am currently hyperfixated and i am in LOVE!!! It's an early access game still but has TONSSSSS OF SHIT IN IT. You run your own little tavern that you can steadily upgrade and expand, and there's farming, mining, ranching, the WHOLE shebang my guy. It's so frickin awesome AAAAAAA

Coral Island: I love coral island, I've put nearly 100 hours into it, however... there has been some controversy over their latest update, so fair warning, there is still quite a few bugs, some mechanics still aren't fully realized, and there's still main quest sections missing. However! It is BY FAR an incredible early access game. Multiple cultures intertwine, the devs do a lot of work for raising money for oceanic causes, and honestly the game really hits home as I remember the oil spill in the Gulf and the damage it caused when I was growing up, so having a game where we try to heal the ocean of its oil spill... it's amazing ❤️

Seduce Me The Otome: I have recently renewed my love of Seduce Me, as it was my first ever VN I read in my teens :3 I love the universe, I love how the lore takes form, and I am also a very big Sam simp. Yeah. Surprising, right? 💀

Happy pride month lovelies! If any of y'all are interested in queer artists this month i'll be (trying) to post a little blurb about some every now and again! (nothing too extensive but a starting point for further reading/research if you're interested! 😋)

Today is for Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns!

Both artists grew up in the American south before moving to New York City to develop their art practices in the 1950s. In 1953, both artists met at a party and quickly became friends and then lovers after bonding over their mutual hate for the current Abstract Expressionist art movement. By 1955, Rauschenberg and Johns had studio spaces next to one another as they became each other's audience and muses for their respective experimental works.

Rauschenberg stated, "Jasper was soft, beautiful, lean, and poetic. [...] I have photos of him then that would break your heart." However, the couple split up by 1962 as Rauschenberg recounts, "What had been sensitive and tender became gossip."

After the breakup, both artists left New York City for an extended period of time and made revenge paintings (see John's work Liar) and refused to speak to one another for several years. In 1950s America, neither artist felt comfortable speaking about their relationship outside their immediate circle of friends, but in a time dominated by macho, egotistical, AbEx Pollock action paintings, Rauschenberg and Johns forged their own, softer, art alternative, together.

You know, I really wonder about how what happened with Maligula affected things for the adult psychics we see throughout Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2 back when they were growing up.

Maligula "died" 20 years ago, her being this huge threat because of what happened in Grulovia was only 20 years ago in the world of the game. That'd be like talking right now about something that happened back in 2004 (which is wild in itself to think about).

So how did this affect the lives of the adults we know? What did this mean for characters like Sasha, Milla, Hollis, Truman, everyone else?

I've especially been wondering about this for Sasha and Milla (since they're always on my brain while I replay the first game). I know we don't have canon ages for them, but I think they're probably around 30 years old or so. Old enough to join the Psychonauts, develop their skills, and become the duo we see in present day for the games.

So say they're 30. That would mean that everything that happened surrounding Maligula, her wiping out so many people, her "dying", the Psychonauts organization becoming a thing, etc., that all would have happened when they were around 10, around Raz's age. Now I don't know if Milla had her abilities back then or not (personally I think she didn't discover she was psychic until later in life when she heard the children screaming telepathically during the orphanage fire) but we know that Sasha has had his abilities since he was a kid, we see it in his memory vault when he reads his dad's mind.

So just, imagine being a 10 year old kid and seeing all these news stories about a dangerous psychic, seeing how everyone around you where you live reacts to that, all the while knowing you're a psychic too.

I can't even describe what that could have been like for people in the Psychonauts world.
