Randomly thinking about “tolerate it” (narrator voice: it was not random) and how under the cloak of fiction it is ostensibly inspired by works like “Rebecca” (which Taylor said she read during the 2020 lockdowns I believe?), with the line of “you’re so much older and wiser” indicating that the speaker is significantly younger and inexperienced compared to the person she’s speaking to and a pretty direct reference to the plot of the book.

But I saw something somewhere once that stuck with me about how it might not be referring to relative age between the characters but chronological age as in the passage of time in a relationship. And that made me think about how in a contemporary context, it might not necessarily be referencing an actual age gap between the two characters, but rather a sarcastic or cynical response to the man’s claims that he has matured (“you’re so much older and wiser [than you were before/than you were when we met/etc.]”), which then made me think about that line in relation to the woman. And that it could be taken like, “you act like you’ve matured so much in our time together and like you know everything, while I’m supposedly still stuck as the girl I was when we first met.”

Which then made me think of the “right where you left me” of it all and did you ever hear about the girl who got frozen time went on for everyone else she won’t know it and the bit in Miss Americana where she talks about how celebrities get frozen at the age at which they got famous, and how she’s had to play catch up in a lot of ways not just in her emotional growth but kind of in general. (Which also made me wonder if she’s ever been called out for immaturity/lack of curiosity/lack of education about things in her life…)

Which then made me think about the rest of the song, and @taylortruther’s posts yesterday about “seven” and “Daylight” and the way Taylor idealizes her youth yet contrasts it with an almost sinister reality in its wake, and the line, “I sit by the door like I’m just a kid,” because the discussion raised that her relationship let her recapture some of the childlike joy and wonder she’d lost. So this line is a double-edged sword: the speaker sits by the door with childlike hope that the person will come home and cherish her, but on the darker side, feels like the child dealing with the monsters she doesn’t have names for yet and the feelings of isolation she felt as she aged.

I’m not saying the song is necessarily autobiographical; like most of the songs on folkmore, it’s clearly a fictionalized story based on media she’d consumed and created, but we know a lot of the fictional songs were infused with her own feelings and experiences and… This idea swirling in my head picked up steam and now I kind of can’t stop thinking about it. Sorry but I’m a little obsessed now.

Like maybe it might start to shed light on why she identified so strongly with the novel in the first place…

question: how do you find your research/sources? yours and dancing disasters' icemav fics are so inside baseball i love it, but how do you go about doing research?

I just read a lot & google stuff I don't know & am curious about. not that hard to start learning. and in terms of reading I've been interested in military history & milfiction my whole life. mostly related to the US army, actually--im extremely new to naval history and naval literature; all of that interest was driven by top gun. I've also been fortunate enough to visit a lot of the places I write about--ive been to Pearl Harbor a couple times & San Diego MANY times, for instance, and I've toured a few aircraft carriers and military bases. I've also finally bitten the bullet and kinda shifted my career path towards aerospace, so I've been learning a lot just by working in the aerospace & defense sector/spending a lot of time with people who do.

that's obviously not to say that I am somehow Educated in all this stuff. im pretty open on this blog about me being young & naive & wrong much of the time about how the real world works. so, you know, a lot of shit I just Make Up according to my preconceived notions of the military & the world.

here is my recommended military/navy reading list, some fiction and some nonfiction.

someone also asked recently if I had read anything good in the last 6 months--yes!! three new additions to my reading list: a) Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain. So goddamn good. If you have to read only one novel about the Iraq War, make it this one. It's more about America than it is about Iraq. b) Redeployment by Phil Klay. This one is a collection of short stories about Marines in Iraq, written by a USMC vet, talk about inside baseball. Crazy amounts of jargon in here, basically a "to-google" list. won the national book award which idk if it deserved, but it's good. c) No true glory: A Frontline Account of the Battle of Fallujah by Bing West. currently reading this one, really well done so far, talks a lot about how fucked the US strategy was in Iraq with Fallujah serving as a metonymy/case study for the war itself.

again... this is all mostly close-quarters-combat (infantry) literature, I really am not that interested in the navy/Air Force that much outside of top gun lol

though I did recently remember that in early 2022, before I was into top gun, I read "Wingmen" by Ensan Case, which is actually a gay US naval aviator romance set in WWII published in 1979! it's really authentic and kind of sad, obviously, since it was a 1940s navy gay love story published in 1979. I don't actually think Wingmen influenced how I wrote wwgattai or how I think of TG/TGM but I just remembered that I read that book in February 2022 and going "oh my god they were wingmen" so maybe you might find that book interesting.

As soon as I saw it and the thought hit, I KNEW I had to show this to you, because it made me so unhinged thinking about the two badass women having a bit of a meet cute...maybe in the middle of a fight...perhaps against the GIW as they, in their utter hubris, decide to lay siege to Nanda Parbat in hopes of extermination the Lazarus Pits and all those that use them.

Oh my gosh I am overwhelmed (positive), I love it so much. They could be so good for each other or so toxic and honestly I am here for either. Here Damian thought he only had to worry about Selina as a stepmother, no no no! Now he has to worry about Jazz as a stepmother, and he can't decide if that's worse or better. Because on one hand, Jazz would probably be really nice to him and try to bond with him, but on the other hand this is tsundere Damian over here, it takes a while before he really warms up to new people in his life. Especially new family members.

Hey, you know, I found some old deleted storyboards scenes from The Lonely Planet a long time ago, and lemme tell ya, the cottage scene was WAY different from the final project!

In fact, in the animatic for the episode shows part of the deleted scene in full animatic form, it features Janet playing music for Wander and making Wander dance with her:

Again, I wanna stress that this episode was BRUTAL in its messaging. It was so obvious yet so subtle all at once, showing the growth and the downfall of Janet’s obsessive nature (I JUST REALIZED SHE CONTROLS ALL THE NATURE AROUND WANDER AS HER MAIN MANIPULATION TOOL AND OH MY GOD THAT PUN WAS SMOOTH AS HELL) in such a realistic way.

Of course, I can tell these storyboards and the original script’s intent was to push the messaging along a bit more, which in my opinion was fine. It definitely would’ve still worked well, but I think the episode is wonderful as it is. At the end of the day WOY is still a Disney show so I think pushing the message of this episode too much would’ve been detrimental. That’s just me being pessimistic about it tho lol

Overall I think if I saw the storyboards with like voice lines or audio or something like that, then it’d be on par with The Heebie Jeebies in terms of spookiness 👍

Eddie is a ghost and is haunting the house Steve’s just moved into. Eddie has always managed to drive people out of the house by haunting it to hell and back because he hates having the share his space and not get to do things in peace (half true). He also thinks it’s fun to mess with the living (also half true). The longest anyone’s stayed in the house and stuck it out despite the haunting is about 6 months or so. He assumes it’ll be the same game with Steve. Eddie figures the guy will break before long, Steve looks like the type of guy to get scared of a simple haunting and run for the hills.

Safe to say, Eddie’s pretty surprised when Steve not only isn’t getting scared, but isn’t reacting to all of his regular ghost antics even in the slightest. It’s almost like he’s ignoring it, but that can’t be the case because why would someone ignore the doors in their home opening and slamming shut on their own, or the mirror’s fogging up with weird symbols and writing ? That’s weird, right ? That’s gotta be weird. Eddie starts to think that Steve’s fucking with him on purpose at this point, he’s gotta be.

This is also around the time that Eddie starts to think that Steve might actually be able to see him, but he’s really not that sure. Sure, he’s been seen a few times before, but it’s usually been enough to drive past homeowners into reselling the property, and this isn’t the case here. It’s not until their eight month together that he really figures it out.

Eddie’s just annoyed at this point. No one’s stuck it out this long and he’s not even had any fun with it because he hasn’t gotten any reactions. Nothing. Not a single reaction. He decided about a week ago or so to just talk. Nonstop. He’s been talking Steve’s ear off for a walk straight about everything he could think of. He keeps making comments about his own day, asking how Steve’s day went of course, waiting for no real response and such. Never gets a response, but hey, what’s stopping him ?

This one day, Steve gets back home late as all hell, clearly in a mood, and looking like he’s just fallen into a lake with how utterly soaked he is. The poor guy is drenched. Eddie makes an off-hand comment about how dumb he looks in his little polo shirt.

That’s what did it.

“Seriously? THAT’S what you comment on? The shirt? I come home looked like I survived a flood and you talk about my fucking polo?”

Now Steve’s making eye contact and Eddie just fucking gawks at him. He hears Steve mutter a quiet “shit” and watches him walk past. Too late now, the dam already broke loose.

“I fucking KNEW you could see me!”

For all the teething I've been doing on Pavo and Esti i haven't been able to like, actually write any thing for them recently mostly because I've been Busy.

But also because I'm snapping between like 3 ideas for them at terminal velocity and haven't been able to actually get anything written for them and it's like having pumas bouncing around my skull at mach fuck as though theyre house cats at 2 am when you're trying to sleep,

#idea one is the day after things start changing and they haven't discussed it fully yet. #Pavo is mulling over some things and Esti is too nervous to ask about it. but they're alone out hunting #its such a nice day. and Esti thinks hes going to be saying goodbye soon. and hes making himself sick with anxiety over it #and they're alone together like old times but its Not like old times because Esti remembers how sweetly Pavo had kissed him that #morning after and how good it had felt to spend the whole morning in bed cureld up against him. #and Esti doesnt think he could stomach the idea of leaving without getting another kiss or at least finding out if Pavo regretted it or not #and the story is them being sweet on each other and avoiding the big heavy topic until Esti can verbally ask about it. because like Pavo #knows him well enough to know whats eating him up. but he wants to hear Esti say the words #and then the second idea is Esti waking up from a nightmare after hes been brought home from that hell. he screams for Pavo and #like of course pavo is on his feet and at the door that separates their rooms in an instant. but its locked and Esti is too #scared to navigate to it because hes already wound up and hes still not used to life as a blind man. so the idea of getting out of bed #and crossing an open room with nothing to help him orient himself is Terrifying. #probably more than it should be but the nightmares are still fresh in his head and hes having to make himself focus and ignore them #and just reasure himself that it Actually is Pavo and not one of those monster that had used his voice. and its hard hes crying and Pavo #has to take down part of the fucking door frame to get the sliding door off its tracks without just busting it down since Esti didn't #need that particular audio experience right now and he liked that doors painting and Pavo had already sent for the craftsperson who #made his eyes to commission them to make a set for esti. and he doesn't want to destroy something pretty esti likes when itll only be a few #until esti can enjoy it again. and he gets into the room and esti scooches over in bed to welcome him into it because despite Everything #esti still will always feel safer pinned between a wall and Pavo than anywhere else. and he just needs to feel safe. #and the third thing is because of something deardest said a yesterday i think about Pavo in his old age. and im just Chewing on the image #of him and esti in his carriage. Esti's hair has gone white and hes nearing his end. and thentwo of them are together and happy #and able to reflect on the lives they've had together. and its mostly just the idea of Pavo being glad hes so much older than Esti. because #it means despite Esti only being half demon and having a much shorter life because of it. Pavo isnt going to outlive him by very long. #and All of this.
