The Meteors

THE METEORS werden landläufig als die „Kings of Psychobilly“ oder gar als die „Götter des Psychobilly“ bezeichnet – und das ist auch ganz richtig so! Denn tatsächlich sind THEMETEORS sogar noch mehr: Nämlich die „Erfinder des Psychobilly“. Entstanden Ende der 1970er Jahre als Reaktion auf den „authentischen“, sehr soften Rockabilly-Sound dieser Zeit, waren THE METEORS die erste Band, die die unbändige Energie des Punk Rock mit dem rauen und urwüchsigen Rockabilly und Rock’n’Roll der 1950er Jahre kombinierten und somit das Genre namens „Psychobilly“ begründeten. Zugegeben, THE CRAMPS arbeiteten zur selben Zeit drüben in Amerika an einer ähnlichen Mischung, doch deren Musik war stets weitaus weniger brachial bzw. brutal als die von THE METEORS – und nichtsdestotrotz kann man wohl ohne schlechtes Gewissen behaupten, dass THE METEORS und THE CRAMPS die beiden wichtigsten Rock’n’Roll-Band sind, die in den 80er Jahren (des vergangenen Jahrhunderts!) gegründet wurden und daß ihre Musik die Jugend- und Subkultur der letzten 40 Jahre maßgeblich beeinflusst hat. Von Anbeginn an sorgten THE METEORS mit ihrem brachialen Stil, der sich vom traditionellen Rock’n’Roll und Rockabilly mit „Südstaatenkult“ und dem dazugehörigen Outfit stark unterschied, nicht nur in England für großes Aufsehen. Obwohl es im Verlauf der Jahre buchstäblich Hunderte von Nachahmern gab (nicht wenige dieser Band wurden übrigens von Musikern gegründet, die zeitweilig bei THE METEORS spielten), so gilt auch heute noch ohne Wenn und Aber: „Only THE METEORS Are Pure Psychobilly!“. Die Songs der „Maniac Rockers From Hell“ wurden dabei stets von persönlichen Erfahrungen inspiriert – und damit meinen THE METEORS Horror, Perversion und den Tod im Allgemeinen; als ihre Helden benennen sie CHARLES MANSON und den Mann, der JOHN LENNON erschoss. Damit dürfte dann wohl auch klar sein, daß THE METEORS schon immer mehr Gefallen daran gefunden haben, über Horrorfilme und Mutanten zu singen als über „Pink Cadillacs“ oder blonde Highschool-Girls. Der ureigene „Maniac-Sound“ von P. Paul Fenechs Gitarre, dessen Stil als „gefährlich“ bezeichnet wird und von unzähligen Psychobilly-Bands erfolglos zu kopieren versucht wurde, ist das Markenzeichen von THE METEORS. Dabei wissen THE METEORS sowohl mit ihren Eigenkompositionen, von denen viele schon als Klassiker zu bezeichnen sind, als auch mit wilden Coverversionen von Songs wie „Wipeout“, „Get Off My Cloud“, „Wild Thing“ oder „Bad Moon Rising“ das Publikum zu begeistern. THE METEORS haben im langen Verlauf ihrer Karriere an die vierzig offizielle Alben (von denen einige schon mehrmals wiederveröffentlicht wurden) sowie unzählige Singles und Compilations veröffentlicht. Noch beeindruckender als die Liste der Plattenveröffentlichungen ist wohl nur die Tatsache, daß THE METEORS mittlerweile mehr als 5.000 Konzerte gegeben haben und dabei wohl so fast in jedem Land unserer Erde schon einmal aufgetreten sind, darunter untet anderem in Japan, Israel, Mexiko und Indonesien. Ihre Live-Shows sind äußerst wild und THE METEORS genießen als Live-Band einen legendären Ruf – aber keine Angst: Ernsthaft verletzt wird niemand! Der Band ist es sehr wichtig, daß bei ihren Konzerten buchstäblich jeder herzlich willkommen ist, denn nach Aussage von P. Paul Fenech ist jeder, der THE METEORS mag, ein Psychobilly; dazu benötigt man weder ein besonderes Outfit, noch Tattoos oder sonst irgendetwas. Nachdem ich mir im letzten Jahr diesen kleinen Kalender gekauft hatte, kam mir die Idee, diesen auch wirklich zu „nutzen“. Außer jeden Tag drauf zu schauen, ein Kalenderblatt abzureißen, nahm ich mir vor, das jeweilige Album am gleichen Tag auch zu hören. Gleichzeitig schaue ich nach ob ich das Album in meiner Sammlung habe und wenn es mir gefällt, oder ich tatsächlich „schwerwiegende“ Lücken in meinem Regal entdecke, dann kauf‘ ich das Album nach.
