Theravada Buddhist New Year this year began on 27th April - in contrast to the Mahayana New Year that was back in January. Songkran and the other solar new year celebrations in the last couple of weeks share common Theravadin roots, but unlike those which have mostly been fixed around about April 13th, or happen when the Sun enters Aries, this new year begins on the first full moon of April and lasts for three days. This post from 2017 describes some key rituals and I’ll share more in stories as usual. Happy New Year. Posted @withregram • @mexicaliblues On Tuesday, many of our Buddhist friends celebrated Theravada New Year. The symbolic elements of this celebration—sand and water—are simple. They are also particularly meaningful to all of us at Mexicali Blues. The tidal Damariscotta River runs right past our headquarters and many of our stores and homes are located on Maine’s coast. We are surrounded by sand and water and we know their powers of healing and renewal well. In this Buddhist tradition, each grain of sand represents a mark on your karma—a deed or thought you regret, or an action that harmed another. Buddhists in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia build sand mounds at monasteries and along riverbanks in the days preceding the New Year. On Theravada New Year, these sand markers are washed away by waves, tides or other means, cleansing and renewing karma. Statues and images of the Buddha are bathed in the waters and monks and elders are sprinkled with water as well. Antique Cambodian Wood Buddha Statue 61” This magnificent Cambodian Buddha statue was carved from an antique piece of wood. Lord Buddha is standing on a round lotus flower base. His hand is held up in abhaya mudra. This mudra (hand gesture) symbolizes protection, peace and the dispelling of fear. The ushnisha, protuberance above his head also referred to as a topknot, symbolizes His wisdom and openness as an enlightened being. The ushnisha is also said to symbolize the loose connection between the mind and body of a Buddha. The Buddha is always depicted with elongated earlobes, a vestige of his life as a prince, when he wore extravagant jewelry. The art of wood sculpture goes back to the glorious epoch of the Khmer empire and the monumental constructions that gave rise to the Angkor temples. Our artisans have inherited patience and meticulousness from their ancestors in the trade. They have learned to capture the movements used in olden times and master the traditional tools in order adapt to their personal lines of work.

Have you always wanted to try meditation but felt silly or not sure where to start? There are many ways to do meditation and as a basic start you should sit comfortably even for a short moment of set a meditation timer and start with something basic. It is okay to have thoughts, but when you recognise you are thinking say thank you and send them on their way , to train your “monkey mind” you need to be mindful of these moments. The idea is that you’re not supposed to have a blank mind but a mindful controlled still mind. As a start I would try setting a timer for 10 minutes, sit comfortably on the floor or in a chair, with your hands in you lap. Take five deep breaths in and out. As you breathe in say (in your mind) breathing in.. as you breathe out say (in your mind) Breathing out. Calm the body and mind they are one. Now inhale deeply and count (in your head) slowly to four, then as you breathe out count to six. Always pause at begging and end. Do this over and over until your timer goes off. You can extend your counts with your breathing to what is comfortably for you. To go deeper do six in, eight out. Try to do this at least once a day! No matter how busy you are MAKE TIME! This is a good technique to start.
