My Pet peeves in ATLA fandom
I have collected some of my fandom pet peeves and decided to post them here to exorcise my annoyance, so to say.
1) it goes across all fandoms really. But I am very tired of fan profiling.
- If fans like character A they must be Z
- If fans hate character B they must be Y
- if fans ship characters C and D together they are necessarily eat babies, abuse puppies and eat spinach.
No, it doesn’t work like that. Sure, there are trends and common markers, but any individual likes and dislikes stuff for various personal reasons. Sometimes characters simply remind of someone else in real life. Sometimes we cannot discern a reason at all. It is fun to ponder, but sweeping generalizations are usually harmful.
2) Now, this pet peeve is rather specific. I hate when people call Aang a monk.
He was raised by monks, that’s it. He never refers to himself as a monk, he is never called one in canon, but fandom collectively decided that all Air Nomads were monks and nuns, and had to abide by all the rules Earth religions set out for the monastic orders. I occasionally see people complaining Aang does not behave like a Catholic monk is supposed to. Of course he doesn’t. Why would he?
3) more on Aang. Is he a self-insert for Mike DiMartino?
Well, Mike said several times in the interviews Aang is based on him in some regards.
In the same interview, he and Bryan said Zuko is based on Bryan in some regards.
And well, Dante Basco occasionally melds into Zuko and nobody minds much.
Who is the biggest self-insert of them all?
4) Everything I learned about creative process on Avatar the Last Airbender seems to indicate that the process was cooperative to the degree surprising in the industry. It was Mike and Bryan’s story but they listened and learned from everyone who worked on the story. There were a lot of ideas flying around in the writing room, some writers like one thing, others another. Some of those ideas ended up in the series, some were thrown out. Normal working process. Why do people need to turn it into a giant conspiracy and all-out shipping war, is beyond me.

please don't mistake silence for hatred. please don't mistake unanswered plotting messages as indifference, or a lack of enthusiasm towards you. considering the ages of most roleplayers, many of us have bills to pay, families to take care of, medical conditions to treat, appointments to make, classes to take, homes to clean, and lives to live away from the computer that are far, far more important than writing on tumblr — life has a tendency to get in the way of hobbies and fun things like this. be patient with your fellow writers. if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. of course you can set your boundaries, keep your space comfortable, and softblock whoever you wish, but do so while recognizing it's probably not hatred or apathy that keeps them from leaping into your dms with message after message. they probably love this hobby just as much as you... but sometimes life gets in the way.

Flash messes with time, in doing so Danny ends up in a bad position.Danny was totally by coincidence summoned to clockworks towers. He gets back to see His parents way are now way big mad scientist. Like on the leagues watch list mad scientist. Like villainous mad scientist. But the two do hide there identities shockingly well.
Danny in this never had his accident. So his parents had enlisted his rouges to help cause chaos and mayhem. The world is now constantly pestered by ghost from the zone.
Phantom does not exist. No one is friends with jazz or Danny out of fear.
Jazz is the one to realize something is wrong, followed by the parents who want to forcibly make Danny help them, even if it means breaking him. Jazz helps Danny escape.
Danny had it and knows it has to be flashes fault. Clockwork has told him stories about flash, mainly to make fun of him. But it has to be his fault.
Cue Danny dragging jazz along to go yell at flash for messing with time. Flash has no idea who Danny is (he was small time Danny had avoided them). Danny is not having it at all just screaming at him about his parents being crazy, none of his friends being his friends and blames him for the ghost problem now facing the world.

whenever i think about the constant slog of world-changing, massive events that writers keep pumping into detective comics comics i think about miyazaki and his mastery of portraying ma in his films — breathing space amidst action and movement. nothing feels important if everything is important. there are no stakes when the world is ending every other week. those quiet moments between tragedy and loss — trainsurfing, eating lunch together, sitting quietly on page while the world isn’t on fire — feel smaller and smaller each year. let moments pause long enough to mean something

People who are worried they aren't helping with climate change or any other big world problem bc they do something like make video games or art or are a cashier at a grocery store:
You are helping. You are making the art that helps me, an environmentalist actively working to restore biodiversity and ecosystems, get through each day. You are helping those of us on the front lines enjoy living or take a well-needed break. The person loading my groceries into my car is making it so I can eat that week and have enough energy to do my work. If you want to do more, you can volunteer, donate, and boost the voices of local community leaders working to protect and restore the local ecosystems, but don't feel bad if you can't. We are all in this together.

The more I learn about Civil War politics, the more I'm convinced that Lincoln's most impressive and useful leadership trait was that he never let his pride get in the way of doing his job.
Other people in Lincoln's position would have come to Washington with something to prove. They'd have resented the insults and tried to disprove them. They'd have tried to seize power and credit, rejected help, spent a lot of time trying to reach a certain level of respect.
Lincoln's response to, "You're just a backwoods lawyer with no executive experience who makes too many dumb jokes," was pretty much always, "Yeah. And?" He had no interest in petty personal power plays. He had a country to run. There was a war on. It didn't matter what people thought of him so long as the job got done.
He was aware of his personal shortcomings and was always willing to accept advice and help from people who had more knowledge and experience in certain areas. He presided over a chaotic Cabinet full of abrasive personalities who thought they were better and smarter than him, but he kept working with them because they could get the job done. For example: Stanton was absolutely horrible to him when they were both working as lawyers. Just incredibly mean on a personal level. But when Lincoln needed someone to replace Cameron, he swallowed his pride and appointed Stanton as Secretary of War, where Stanton proceeded to be mean to everyone in the world, but he whipped that department into shape and kept it running efficiently through a very chaotic war. Pretty much no one except Lincoln would have been able to put up with that. He could put up with people who were personally difficult if they could do the job he needed them to do--which he was only able to do because his own ego didn't get in the way.
Lincoln's example is a prime demonstration of how humility isn't underrating yourself--it's being so secure in your own abilities and identity that you don't need to attack anyone or defend yourself to prove your worth. He knew his shortcomings, but he also knew his strengths. He was willing to give other people credit for successes and take blame upon himself for failures if it kept things running smoothly. He was secure enough in his own power that he could deal generously--but firmly--with people who tried to undermine him. In a city full of huge egos, in a profession that rewards puffed-up pride, that levelheaded humility is an extremely rare trait--which is what made it so impressive and effective.

i used to talk about this a lot on twitter a few years ago but recently i’ve been thinking again about how little agency victor kain has both within the narrative and as an individual. specifically i think a lot about how his life after nina’s death is one in which he as a person plays very little role, and the fact that his duty as her husband (and as a kain) means that after she’s gone the nature of his family’s beliefs about the preservation of the soul keep him trapped by design in a grief that is necessarily all-consuming. if he wants to keep nina’s soul alive he can never progress beyond even the first stage of grief: every moment has to be dedicated to her and her memory; he has to be constantly reminded of her and the fact that she is dead. for him to move on would be for him to essentially kill her, so he can never even attempt to recover from her loss. his life has to revolve around the space where she was. in that way i see him as kind of a living shrine, a memorial whilst he’s alive and a vessel when he’s dead. his path is called the mistress! his entire life is explicitly devoted to someone who will take his body and return to life when he sacrifices himself for her! he’s working towards a utopia like the rest of his family, but who is it for? he lost his son in the pursuit of this thing which he will never get to see, and which seemingly never had a place for him at all. the kains’ utopia doesn’t even extend to their own.
all of this pains me particularly acutely because of how clear it is that victor does have interests and desires of his own, despite his implications that he is nothing more than a mouthpiece for his family. if you believe andrey, he doesn’t even want to be here: he wants to go back to the capital to finish his degree. i often see people talk about the kains as if they are one undifferentiated entity, but a lot of the quests ‘the kains’ give you are from victor, and i would argue that in most of those he is acting as an individual rather than necessarily a kain. he wants daniil to free the wrongfully imprisoned people; he acts against his family’s interests in rewarding clara for telling him about rubin. his letter to daniil on day 9 causes me agony for many reasons but in this context specifically because it doesn’t seem like he wants to die. georgiy appears pretty unfazed about being possessed by simon (although it’s georgiy so who knows) but victor, who has two children and has been one of the town’s rulers for presumably several decades, is telling a man he met just over a week ago that he is the only one to whom he can pass on anything meaningful. you could argue that he is just manipulating daniil here to persuade him to take up the kains’ cause, but i am of the opinion that he is being genuine in this case. he doesn’t want to die. he wants his family back again, but the only way they can be reunited is with his death. he wants to finish his degree. i am putting my head through walls
