I could've sworn I sent something in a while back, but I guess Tumblr Is Tumblr so that got lost to the void. Anyway, GA!Anon here and don't worry, I absolutely LOVE what you're doing with Golden Attempt! It's so fun seeing someone take my idea run so wild with it! To be honest, it makes it a little tempting to try writing myself! Though on that note, I give you this idea: can you imagine how Nader could have played into this? Say, perhaps sent out as a force by the king of Almyra to find out what's REALLY going on; because he knows Khalid would never have killed his brother under really any circumstances, unless he had absolutely no other options.
You know that sounds like Tumblr it's a little like the Bermuda Triangle of myth: sometimes things make it through, sometimes they don't, and nobody knows what the fuck determines which outcome.
also re: this statement:
To be honest, it makes it a little tempting to try writing myself!
DO IT. DO IT DO IT DO IT AND SEND ME A LINK BECAUSE I NEED TO SEE IT because as you might have noticed I'm kind of obsessed with this idea and I am vibrating with excitement at the thought of you showing exactly what you had in mind for it! I've had a blast with the core concept, but it's just my take on it (complete with all of my very niche hyper-specific headcanons), so I'd absolutely LOVE to see your vision come to life!!
Also I am living for that idea about Nader's motives for being there. I have a major soft spot not only for the (apparently canon!!) idea of Khalid being his dad's favorite, but also that they have a really good relationship -- enough so that the king of Almyra is not going to just accept that his son would do something like that. He knows Khalid set out to change Fodlan, and the idea of Fodlan changing him instead is unthinkable -- so it makes perfect sense that he would tell Nader to keep an eye on things and figure out what's really going on.
(Nader himself might not have the same strength of conviction that the king does, and as much as it pains him, he would think it possible that Fodlan really has changed Claude to the point that he's turning his back on his heritage -- he became the king of Leicester, binding him to the land west of the Locket, after all...plus the imposter doesn't speak Almyran, and cautions Nader not to do so even in private "for fear of being overheard," which would sound like he's really trying to bury those connections even as he takes temporary advantage of them.)

Hi I was was wondering do you have any thoughts on Sylvain interest towards Shez wepon definitely when compared to Linhardt and possibly Hanneman lack of interest.
Oh!
As opposed to the GD shaft, Nopes really explored more on the BL gang!
It's very interesting and in character with his "evolution" tbh, Sylvain resents his position as the crested heir and the importance of his crest - but also understands his crest (and his ability to use it!) is needed in Gautier because Gautier is a march and it needs protection from the Srengese raids.
So him being interested in Barney's weapons - apparently super powerful like relics (which raises the question of wtf agarthans slaughtered lizards to make weapons if they could make weapons as powerful as lizard-made weapons??) - goes in his general arc, if people can become as powerful as crested people with a relic by using Barney's weapons, it would alleviate the burden placed on crest bearers!
IIRC Sylvain also expresses interest in a firearm protoype iirc?
It's again relative to his mindset of developing weapons that don't need crests to use, and would be as efficient as Relics -
And we could link this to Rhea's ban of "black water" extraction - for sure it gives everyone an access to "powerful" weapons, but is it really a good thing if you want a peaceful land?
(Which is also why I like the Nopes mention that fwiw, the Gautier "tried" to foster peace with Leif, the Srengese grandson of the guy Macul yeeted away, but in the end it doesn't work that well and Clout adds Almyran oil on the fire)
Of course we will never know because Agartha is never developped what Barney's weapons are, and if anyone, bar Barney, can use them or if they are "as strong" as relics lore-wise...
But it was a fun idea the writers gave us (and obviously never developed)!
Hanneman and Linhardt's interest in crests is... not as practical, Lin wants to study for Science ! and Hanneman, despite his backstory (even if his endings mention progress and development of tech not needing crests?) is very elusive on the question - he is supposed to be the head honcho on crestology, but the one who was getting closer to "the truth" is a random monk who stopped researching and left a note in the Abyss rather than said head honcho...

Apparently I'm having a lot of 3H worldbuilding thoughts this weekend. This post is on: on what Adrestia (+Agartha) was after, exactly, by invading Faerghus first in most routes
So the ideological/political explanation is that Faerghus is close to the Church and will defend them so you automatically have to go after them if you go after Church etc etc very cool, but what do they get, materially, by going into the frozen north first thing? That they don't have as much of in Adrestia (or Leicester)?
Metal and mines, apparently:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On top of this, regions adjacent to Faerghus— Duscur and Sreng— are also known for metalwork and weaponry.
Of course you can say it's because the Slithers have deeper infiltration up north (with their involvement with Duscur and Western Church plus Cornelia) so that obviously makes it easier, but I think it's the other way around. Meaning, I think the Slithers put more effort into infiltrating Faerghus because of the metal resources.
Following from that, I think the decision to invade Faerghus first in non-CF routes was a compromise between Edelgard/Adrestians and the Slithers, where Edelgard gets the ideological/political points but Slithers get the material benefits. Ideological stuff listed above aside, if you want to do wide social/civil reforms and make Fódlan less myopic, wouldn't it be more practical to take over the country with fertile farmlands and ports and industry and finance and trade first?
Well, that's what the Empire does in CF, where the Adrestian side presumably has more leverage on operations thanks to having Byleth and the Creator Sword on their side. Situation's a bit different in Hopes but I think it's interesting that in SB, the official invasion as led by Adrestia (instead of Lonato jumping the gun) does end up waiting until after securing the pact with Leicester.
Back to Houses though, it's not hard to see why Slithers want metal and mines. They want to make weapons, and not just regular weapons, they're out here making big fucking mechs. Probably fantasy computers (which also require metals, including precious metals) to operate them, too.
And on the one hand, seeing the Agarthans drag all the actual spoils off to their underground lair so they can make whatever fucked up weapon that they'll use for their own goals probably pissed the Adrestians off. But on the other hand, what can they do when the Agarthans are also providing the military technology (ex: Aymr) that the Adrestians use for their own goals?
Given all this, I think in non-CF routes, by the time Byleth wakes up again, the Empire is actually in a far worse state than we think. The Adrestian troops who are actually doing the fighting are stuck up north where they haven't made much progress in years, and any material gains they have there just go straight into Slither pockets. Back in Enbarr, the Adrestians and Agarthans hate each other even more than they already did at the beginning of the war and are probably doing everything they can to sabotage and spy on one another, while fighting a war on the same side.
At that point, the greatest common motivation the Adrestians and Agarthans would have in finishing up conquering the continent is probably the prospect of finally getting to go at it with one another.
And the letter Hubert leaves in SS/VW telling Byleth about the Slithers: the suddenness of that plot point aside, let's just appreciate how petty (complimentary) that is, politically. "I know you killed us and all, but we really hate the guys we were doing this group project (war) with. Can you kill them too. Thanks."
Tl;dr the Adrestian-Agarthan war councils in non-CF routes probably gave multiple people high blood pressure

Congrats on beating 3H !! So what are your thoughts of the complete Fodlan experience ?
Tumblr media
Jokes aside, honestly I'm not sure I can give a straight answer.
Overall I'd say it's been one of if not my least favourite Fire Emblem, but that really doesn't sum it up.
A more accurate description would be that it had a good chunk of things I loved (above all the Nabatean fam, Dimitri and his story and Claude as a character)... But it's buried beneath a mountain of boredom to slog through, decisions I just don't vibe with and The Bullshit™. Sooo much tedium and Bullshit in this game, and the fact I was kinda done halfway through VW and only persevered through the end out of sheer spite doesn't help.
And it's such a shame because when I liked the game I REALLY liked it and think it has some of the best/most interesting ideas of the entire series... But was it really worth slogging through hundreds of hours playing the same mediocre at best maps and story beats over and over and having to constantly bear that. Fucking. Monastery? Right now I'm inclined to say no. As much as I love those things, it was not.
Playing all the routes one after another really lays some of the biggest issues of this game, like the repetition. SOOO much of this game is recycled between routes and also in a single route to honestly insulting levels, and it doesn't get that much better in Part 2. The fact the devs somehow didn't think people would want to play more than one route is just. Baffling.
Something I realized in the final playthrough is that they also recycle maps for what are supposed to be completely different locations. So you get shit like Brigid somehow looking the exact same as a forest in the Alliance filled with Demonic Beasts, or Rhodos Coast and a beach in the Sreng Peninsula perfect copies of each other. Complete with the monuments for Cichol and Cethleann. Also like damn, Seteth's wife was so dead they had to bury her twice. In two different locations.
The writing is all over the place as a result of the chaotic development where not even the devs could agree on what the story was, and the whole game could be used as a test study on the sheer damage scope creep can do as well as the obsession with lore and worldbuilding that they contradict as soon as it's convenient over making an actually coherent narrative. And also why you don't throw literally any idea you can come up with to the wall hoping something sticks.
Because of the overreliance on telling over showing, what with the bland recycled maps and all, that Garreg Mach almost feels like the only real location in Fódlan, and that's something no amount of in-game libraries or novels worth of lore if those ten thousand years of lore are even real and didn't just make it up
Speaking of Garreg Mach, dear Sothis I hate that place now.
The monastery was fun the first time around, but then it became a chore to something I actively dreaded doing. It's monotone, you do the same shit every time, it lasts FOREVER compared to, you know, the ACTUAL Fire Emblem gameplay I'm playing for. And while you can technically skip it, you're losing on so much stuff to progress your units if you use it, so it feels like the option is just there to mock you. Getting into Persona and realizing how well the calendar system can work if done properly did nothing but sour me even more on the monastery.
The characters having new dialogue every chapter is really neat and something I wish got properly carried over to Engage, this game manages to turn even that into a chore.
And like - I really want to like this game, and in a sense I do, there's quite a bit of it I love. But so much of it makes me actively groan that I don't think I'm gonna replay it for at least a year. And if I do it will be with the No Monastery mod.

Could you talk a little more about the complexities of Blue Lions?
I agree that almost everyone puts them down and says they're simple, when in reality they're just as complex as the other houses.
i'm so sorry this took so long (homework is gonna be the death of me i swear) but oh my god anon i love you
in the reblogs of the original post i did expand on them a bit individually but i am absolutely happy to talk about it more
sylvain takes his duty seriously as the future margrave gautier, which is something not a lot of people talk about. he inherits the title in literally every single one of his endings in every route (you can fact check if you want) and it’s said that he does an excellent job helping fódlan regrow and protecting the northern border from sreng in every one of them. his only reservation about it is the existence of his crest and the shit he got because of it, both from strangers and from his brother. he’s also incredibly smart (see: his supports with annette (houses), shez (hopes), his three hopes a support with felix, his three hopes supports with ashe, his three hopes supports with ignatz) and a very caring person/good friend (see: his three houses supports with dedue, mercedes, bernadetta, lysithea, dimitri, and manuela, and his three hopes supports with ingrid, mercedes, felix, dedue, and dimitri). he’s reliable (there’s a ton of evidence to that, especially in three hopes) and it’s established that he’s one of the best tacticians out there. he’s passionate about devaluing crests despite benefitting from them to the outward eye, and is always ready to help when he can. he also has low self esteem and shoves his feelings out of the way. he throws himself into various engagements with women as a form of self-destruction, never allowing himself to actually fall in love with them and treating them like shit so he doesn't get attached. he doesn't see himself as worthy of love, and so he does what he can to taunt himself with the idea with it and then rip it away from himself (see: his supports with byleth, yes, he’s a flirt and that is a big aspect of his character, but it’s not the only aspect, which more people need to acknowledge.
felix also takes his role as duke seriously, which is something a lot of people ignore. he does abandon his title in some of his endings, but none of them are AM endings. he cares about dimitri, as much as he is loathe to admit it. he's driven by emotions and sentimentality despite his inability to display emotions, hatred for outward sentimentality, and cold exterior, as proved by his three hopes supports with ingrid. and that cold exterior he developed was to cope with what felt to him like the loss of both his father and brother, and later dimitri (who he likely saw as a brother figure then). he says, point blank, that he is far from immune to emotion in his a support with dimitri in three houses. he's stubborn, yes, but not unbearably so, and he's a softy at heart. it's said in his b support with lysithea in three houses that he gave the cake she gave him to a kid, implying he doesn't mind kids as he could have just given the cake to sylvain or ingrid or another one of his friends. he's not a bad guy and doesn't spread rumors, as proved by his supports with annette in three houses. he's highly adaptable and reacts to situations in whatever way will compliment who he's with, as said in his a support with shez. his tactics can be wild but he's still incredibly smart and a vital part of their strategies both on and off the battlefield, as said by ingrid in their three houses c support and dedue in their three hopes support. he's a good friend, as said by ashe in their three hopes support and his actions before his supports in three hopes with sylvain. he's not just an emotionless swordsman who hates his dad.
ingrid isn't just a stickler about rules. she's sentimental and incredibly mature for her age (likely due to being so ostracized from her brothers and having glenn, felix, sylvain, and dimitri as childhood friends), and is willing to go to great lengths for her loved ones, even if it does go to the extreme sometimes. she saw bernadetta hiding in her room regularly and took it upon herself to help, as she had done the same thing after glenn's death. she knows felix well enough to be able to coax him to class in their c support. she was lead to believe something false, but rectifies that in her supports with dedue and realizes the faults in her ways beforehand in three houses and in three hopes gives up on that hate as more information is revealed about the tragedy. she's also very well-read and can separate her fantasies and ideals from her duties, no matter how much it pains her to do so. she's not afraid to ask for help when it comes to less personal matters, but is also fiercely independent and loathes bothering other people with her personal affairs, such as marriage proposals and her turmoil about being a knight vs being count galatea. it's clear that she loves her home, as she knows that she would likely be the best candidate for the role of count, but she doesn't want to give up on her dreams despite that. though she resigns herself to her fate in three hopes, she allows herself to get comfortable enough with byleth in three houses to reach a conclusion that combines her duty and her dream. she admits to sylvain that he's the one who dragged her from her grief after glenns death, and she allows herself to learn the truth eventually. she's far more complex than people give her credit for.
ashe is not your soft boy. i see so much shit about him being just some soft uwu boy when he so absolutely isn’t. he was orphaned, left to raise two younger siblings, and had to turn to thievery all before his tenth birthday and is still regretful for the things he had to do to survive. he is undeniably good. however, that doesn’t mean he’s soft and harmless and has to be protected. he wants to be a knight, even knowing what that entails. he becomes a soldier at 16 years old and has to watch as his classmates puts the man who saved him to the sword. he’s a general in three houses and a knight in three hopes, and he fights in the war in both games. yes, he’s incredibly caring, he can cook, he holds onto his fantasies, his ideals can be a bit naive. but he is not just some little boy you get to fawn over, when he’s been orphaned twice over and lied to about his older brothers death and still continues to smile and still hasn’t given up hope for the future. he is capable of making hard decisions, able to decide things for himself. he was the only one going into the lions who didn’t know someone else, and three months later it’s his father attacking the church, and yet he keeps smiling and keeps going and makes valuable bonds despite that. and, again, he had to do regrettable things as a child. he lived on the streets while raising his siblings. he’s seen it all, and i’m tired of people pretending he hasn’t. he’s also phenomenal at reading people (there’s a lot of evidence but specifically citing his three hopes support with felix). he’s not just your soft boy.
also, mercedes has been through hell!! and people never remember it!!! she had to watch as her mother was used to give count bartels a child with a crest and then was thrown out. she had to leave her brother behind. she said in her a support with byleth that joining the war was the first choice she had ever made of her own free will. after the timeskip, she is twenty-eight. and yes, she's a big sister character, and yes, she is extremely caring for all the other lions, but she's not just that. she's always excited to learn and is incredibly innovative (her supports with ashe, her supports with dedue (hopes and houses), her c support with dimitri, the fact taht she willingly went to the fhirdiad school of sorcery). she's smarter than people give her credit for and has brilliant people skills and does genuinely enjoy taking care of other people (her b support with ferdinand, her supports with jeritza, her supports with felix, her supports with cyril, her supports with hilda). she's very devout to her faith, but she's even more devout to her friends and family. she has never once lived for herself (a trend with the lions, truly) but never begrudges that. she's not a simple baker; she's smart and kind and has a terrifying side of mischief in her. she often teases her friends, including byleth, but is incredibly respectful of everyones boundaries (see: her supports with felix). also, back to the hardships she's been through, her adoptive father literally bought her because of her crest. she and sylvain bond over this and the troubles that their crests have brought them, and she was perfectly happy to let sylvain rant to her about it while also offering her own experiences to show him that he wasn't alone. she's such a caring character and such a good friend, which people often neglect when talking about her, and all of this is reinforced in three hopes. there is so much more about her but i'm cutting it off here because otherwise this is going to be far too long.
annette is not just ditzy and hard-working!! she is a multi-faceted character with so many different aspects about her!! she's carefree and allows herself to actually act her age. she lets herself be silly and carefree and have fun. she's highly artistic (see: her supports with ingrid, felix, claude, and kind of mercedes) and a good friend, and she knows how to go about things when they go south. she's good in an emergency - better than most, in fact - and has the determination to get her and everyone else through. yes, she's a bit of an airhead, but she's incredibly dilligent and hardworking despite that. it's established that she doesn't really know how to take a break (supports with byleth), and that her uncle is really rather strict which leaves her to deal with low self-esteem, which was undoubtedly worsened by the fact that gilbert spends so long ignoring her (directly: supports with dedue. indirectly: her supports with byleth and caspar, how her preferred method after getting a “bad” is to console her). she's also a highly competitive person (see: supports with lysithea, a little bit in her supports with sylvain). she loves helping people (supports with dedue, supports with ashe, supports with ashe in three hopes, solo ending, and endings with byleth, claude, linhardt, non-CF caspar, non-AM felix, dedue, mercedes, hanneman, and gilbert). she's also a powerful mage despite wind magic not necessarily being the strongest. she's afraid of letting people down and disappointing them, which she says straight-up in her supports with hilda. she's highly inquisitive and loves to learn, though tends to be self-conscious when it comes to taking up other peoples time with it (supports with lysithea and hanneman). people need to stop using her just as comedic relief when that's not all there is to her.
there is so much more to dedue than his devotion to dimitri, which people tend to neglect. yes, he's stoic and not necessarily the best conversationalist, but he's a deeply caring person and while he doesn't trust easily, once he trusts you he will be the best friend you will ever have (supports with shez). he loves kids and hates that he scares them (supports with mercedes in three hopes). he cares about his culture, as shown in his supports with mercedes, byleth, ashe, and sylvain in three houses and his general role in three hopes. he cares deeply, enough so that he's willing to distance himself from people because he is of duscur and doesn't want to risk tarnishing their reputation (almost every three houses support, supports with mercedes in three hopes). he doesn't begrudge those that hate the people of duscur, despite the fact that he likely should, and even seems somewhat surprised that him being from duscur isn't why felix hates him and is always surprised when faerghans don't hate him despite it all (supports with sylvain, ashe, and mercedes). he's clearly gentle, shown by the time he spends in the kitchen and greenhouse with materials that you cannot be rough with. he is willing to teach people (his supports with mercedes in three houses, his supports with sylvain in three houses, his supports with flayn, implied in his supports with petra in three hopes, his supports with annette in both three houses and three hopes) but he is also willing to be taught (his supports with mercedes in three hopes, implied in his supports with petra in three hopes, his supports with ashe in three hopes). he's truly such a caring person, which people always look over and neglect due to his stoicism and stern disposition. he is hesitant to talk to people, yes, but for good reason: so many people hate him just because of false information, so obviously he would rather not take the risk of someone attacking him for something he had no control over.
they are so much more than people give them credit for and it breaks my heart to see them simplified so often.

Seeing @sevarix-blogs' amazing work doing all the number stuff for Fodlan made me want to do it too, if only so I wouldn't be a massive bother constantly asking for loads of different sizes of/distances between places now I know it can be worked out
And this is what I ended up with, using (I think?) a completely different method
Cut because long and rambly and pictures and maths
So yesterday I asked my (maths teacher) brother for help, and he said if I can fit Fodlan into a X by 2X rectangle, then that makes working things out easier
(The colour coded map is from here btw, and if I understood how reddit worked or how to find their username I would say so but I'm dumb and I don't so I can't I'm so sorry TT__TT)
Tumblr media
The blurb from the picture for ease of reading is:
Total area of Fodlan = 6,786,666 sq km / 2,620,346 sq miles So X by X is half = 3,393,333 sq km / 1,310,173 sq miles Square root of = X = 1842 km / 1144 miles Half (Green/Yellow) = 921 km / 572 miles Quarter (Black/White) = 460.5 km / 286 miles Eighth (Pink/Red) = 230.25 km / 143 miles 16th (Blue/Orange) = 115.125 km / 71.5 miles 32nd (Purple/Green) = 57.46 km / 35.75 miles
The colours refer to the rectangles and boxes on the Fodlan map to the right, which I freely admit were eyeballed and freehanded using the CSP rectangle tool, so are a smidge out here and there
And the bit about Sreng:
Half of Sreng is the Kingdom's. But I'm not entirely sure if that means some of what is now Gautier used to be Sreng, or the bottom half of what is shown here as Sreng should be included in this box? If including Sreng in the outline box, then this scaling works (more or less) If not, then the scaling is a little off because the outline box should be smaller/the countries should be bigger Because the box will always be 1842 km / 1144 miles tall, only change is how much map fits inside it
I lean towards half of Sreng should be included, and it would fit quite nicely into the white gaps of the cut up map on the left, because 1) we get sent on missions to Sreng and the marker is firmly in the Sreng region right of the mountain range and 2) it's referred to as a peninsula, which I don't think it would be if some of it used to be in what is now Gautier? But this is very much a "your milage may vary" thing, so as I said, if you don't want to include Sreng, then the boxes should be slightly bigger/contain slightly more landmass (but I don't know how much without making another guesstimate rectangle and cutting up Fodlan again, and I don't want to do it a third time)
And speaking of boxes:
Tumblr media
Here's the Three Hopes map of Fodlan with all the territories highlighted in different colours overlaid with a square grid, with each square being 57.5625 km or 35.75 miles long/wide
I would have done the Three Houses map as well, but as I said when I tried to match them up yesterday, the maps don't bloody match!!!
(Which I am not at all still upset or annoyed about, no, why would you think that? ¬__¬ )
Anyway. The grid lines mean that you can zoom in and work out some sort of scale against measuring tool of choice to then work out smaller distances. Which is pretty neat.
Also, when I move the box layer around to line it up with things, I can see that: Deidriu is one box wide and two boxes tall, (so 57.5 km by 115 - 6626.88 km², or 35.75 miles by 71.5 - 2556.125 miles²) Fhirdiad is maybe 8 boxes total? (it is such a weird shape I hate it) (26507.53 km², or 10224.5 miles²) Enbarr is give or take one box tall and three wide (172.68 km by 57.56 - 9940.32km², or 107.25 miles by 35.75 - 3834.18miles²)
I think?? Maths isn't my strong suit and I don't want to bother my brother too much since I accidentally woke him up at 3am when I finished and sent him this to see if my initial maths work out blurb was right ^^;;;
And vaguely related, but it looks like @nerdnag was right about there being a perspective difference when I was pulling my hair out yesterday over the Houses/Hopes map, because when you look at the world map compared to the local/chapter map:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then overlay them:
Tumblr media
Yeah
So my plan on fitting my game screenshots onto the grid so I can calculate from the close ups is scrapped, but eh.
Also disclaimer that this doesn't account for terrain. At all. I would have no idea where to start with that so I won't
Also disclaimer that while the maths is solid, my photo editing skills aren't, so there's a lotta leeway there. Like. Oodles. So this might not be accurate at all

Faerghus has a Famine problem, and I think that is related to their treatment of Duscur and Sreng's people.
So Faerghus has a famine problem. We don't deeply examine it in game, but it does show up through characters. Sylvain makes a comment on the meals, and how they couldn't eat like this at home, and Ingrid's Galatea home has severe famine going on.
I'm going to make some assumptions about Fódlan history. Andrestia is based on the Roman Empire, a conquering nation. It can be assumed that they conquered the continent and appointed the lords whose families appear in the game. The official church line says that the 10 elites were heros who fought against Nemesis, in truth they got their crests through the blood of murder victims. The elites were killed but their families were spared.
And so the continent was united in conquest. For there to have been conquest, there had to have been people there first. And that is where I think Duscur and Sreng come in. They were probably the original natives of the land, and their smaller sections of the map (and described condition of Sreng, rings some bells to me about residential areas)
(Hmm, I'm Canadian, and have made effort to learn about Native issues. I can't say I'm the most qualified person to talk about, but I attempt to at least have information. )
So the treatment of Duscur is reminiscent of treatment Native Americans have faced. Things like being blamed for crimes, the genocide their culture and people have survived (much was lost in the process), and sectioning them off to specific areas.
This is a result of colonialism, and in the process important knowledge is lost. It's not new to Japan either, if they had wanted to get a bit more nuance in the portrayal they could have considered Ainu.
But I am getting distracted. Important knowledge lost would probably include farming practices that sustain the land.
Or the locals probably have a good reason for doing something you consider crazy. Take for instance Australian Aboriginal burning practices.
They have knowledge of grass and how well it will burn, and they knew what type of fires to burn for each land, for how long, and how often to do it.
"Aboriginal techniques are based in part on fire prevention: ridding the land of fuel, like debris, scrub, undergrowth and certain grasses. The fuel alights easily, which allows for more intense flames that are harder to fight.
The Aboriginal people would set small-scale fires that weren't too intense and clear the land of the extra debris. The smaller intensity fires would lessen the impact on the insects and animals occupying the land, too, as well as protect the trees and the canopy."
It takes skill and knowledge, something that was diminished by colonizers, and while they are trying to recreate it, they do not have the same knowledge as the locals who did it for thousands of years. And global warming escalation is making it worse.
Or, new people have the land, and they don't know how to use it like the locals would, and don't want to ask because they are too busy looking down on the locals.
Sreng has been invading Gautier for over 200 years. The war of heros was over 1,000 years ago.
Faerghus rebelled in 747 and winning in 751, and Leicester rebelling from Andrestia  in 801 leading to more war. The Kingdom intervened by occupying and annexing Leicester as a protectorate. The Alliance was formed in 901
101 was the formation of the locket.
1160 was the year of the plague, Dimitris mother died from it 2 years later.  And 1668 was the invasion and Annexing of the southern part of Sreng.
So from what I can tell, Sreng has been fighting Gautier since the rebellion of Leicester.  But exact timing is iffy.
Its harder to get a timeline for how long Faerghus has been occupying the lands. Fraldarius is one of the oldest nobel house on record, but I can't confidently say that they have had the land they live on for more than 500 years. Probably less.
I don't think that Duscur was driven off their land all at once so much as given a smaller and smaller land that is Duscar,as Faerghus annexed it. Or probably got annexed from both Faerghus and Andrestia on both ends as they established borders.
It's entirely probable that the nobles chased the locals off the lands and claimed it as their post rebellion, and in doing so gained land that they didn't know how to take care of like the locals would.
It could be they didn't properly balance the acidity in the soil from their crops. Or any number of issues they didn't address because they didn't ask, and assumed they knew what they were doing, and now generations later the descendents are doing as their ancestors did, and getting bad results.
Like, North America has a worm invasion. North America did not have worms before people came over from Europe (they died off in the global ice age, if there were any) , and decomposition was done by the forest leaves and such. So worms are spreading, and changing things like soil organizations, plant communities, erosion, forests ability to store carbon, and with the newest worm invasion reducing insects.
Ah, the point is the land is more fragile than you credit it for. Faerghus has a famine problem and I think that the driving out (and Genocide attempt) of its original inhabitants is related to that problem.

Azure Gleam Ch 7
Man . . . my "only use one unit" thing is really going to make this . . . interesting. . . .
STORY
Man, I use Dimitri, Rodrigue, and Dedue. And now all 3 are gone. Nooo. Whyyyyy. That's ok. I'll just grind Ingrid, Sylvain, and Felix up a few levels if I can't catch them up bc Dimitri's MIA. If I can just give them a few levels, we'll be good lol.
So Sreng caused trouble, but not as much as it sounded like. Relief that Sylvain's dad is ok.
Yeah, they're luring Dimitri into something, aren't they? Cornelia? Is this why Dimitri's MIA? Story stuff.
Shez is like let's go Felix. I agree.
Unless this soldier is a liar.
Love seeing Felix get to call shots for real though.
Sylvain's like we have to get to Dimitri. Felix says Dimitri manages to give him a headache when he's not even around, lamo. Accurate. The Dimilix is strong in this one and I'm not angry about it.
MAP/SIDE BATTLE
Yep, like I thought, Rodrigue, Dedue, and Dimitri are gone. But I CAN level anyone up to 30 where Dimitri is, so I'm fine. I'll just give Shez and co a little boost. Plus, it's a good excuse to use Felix, Ingrid, and Sylvain a bit. Mercedes too.
"King Awakens" is the chapter name. Looking forward to this. Something is obviously about to go down. I'm worried though. This is obviously a parallel to the AM chapter where Dimitri retakes Fhirdiad in AM, so what happens this time then?
Kinda torn about this. Some of me wants it to be another "Dimitri the good king" kinda moment, like a big positive growth thing going on for him. But another part of me wants Dimitri's proper villain arc. But I just don't see that happening unless they killed off Dedue and Rodrigue, but if that happened, I would've gotten more comments. Either way, I'm stoked about this.
Petra's thoughts on Sreng is interesting, esp since she called it peace between Brigid and the Empire despite her not willingly being there.
Man, I feel there is just so much more going on in this route than the other two, with Miklain, the mystery of what's happened to Dimitri, drama with Sreng and the Empire that's a consistent threat (and not like what just happened in GW).
Duke Ifan sounds like a badass, people are like "no way she'd let someone invade." I wish we'd get to see her, but since she's a woman she won't get a unique face, that's reserved for Dads only.
Felix's dialogue was interesting. It starts like he's repeating one of Dimitri's lines about the dead and ends with him understanding and sympathizing with Dimitri more now that he knows what it's like to lead.
I'm really interested to see where this leads for those two. I'm so happy Felix is getting all this attention. Man, my Dimilix heart is loving AG so far.
Of course it's Cornelia and the Western lords. They're the reason we haven't heard from Dimitri :(
So that bitch threatened the people and Dimitri surrendered to protect them 😭😭😭😭😭 Of course he did.
But if they haven't heard from Rodrigue or Dedue, that means they got away. Gilbert is probably ok too.
Will Dimitri still have two eyes after this? Or is he going to get one taken out again 😭😭😭
Shez is so worried 😭😭😭
Felix called him "our fearless leader" that's not the first time I don't think. You know, I'll take that over boar.
So we'll be doing the prison break this time. Cornelia better not have hurt him unlike last time. Or that this doesn't cause him to "snap," because this is like the only route that's different so far. I love that story line, but I want something new.
Oh, Dimitri. I wish he would just behead Cornelia. He could crush her head with his hands probably. You know the only reason he's not is to protect his people 😭😭😭😭😭
Rodrigue and Dedue are trying 😭😭 Don't worry, Felix, Shez, and everyone are coming.
She's boasting that she'll hang Dimitri in front of all of them. God, I can't wait to kill her. And get Dedue, Rodrigue, and Dimitri back.
I reallllly am dying to see this reunion. Felix is going to let Dimitri hear it lamo.
Lamo, Dimitri's like "I almost appreciate such bald faced sadism." Cornelia's like "such flirting."
She's also like "you deserve this for reforming things." What a bitch.
You know Dimitri is probably blaming himself for this. For pissing off the Western lords, who are unquestionably awful. Someone get in there before he gets too far into his own head 😭😭 Well, someone other than Cornelia, who sure loves to gloat. She's so evil. I love it.
Dimitri gets all the best villains Cornelia (hammy fun villain) and Edelgard (interesting, personal, complex villain) are wayyyy more cool than "exists" Nemesis and CF!Rhea (Rhea is awesome, but my God they made her one-dimensional in CF). Not gonna lie, though, it would be nice for Dimitri to get to punch TWSITD as a whole out on purpose and hoping this game will let him.
Catherine just mentioned Shamir. Is her girlfriend showing up soon? Please tell me they have supports in this game.
Poor Ashe's like "our King is suicidal." Poor dude can't catch a break this game.
Sylvain's ready to lecture Dimitri about his recklessness. Good.
SYLVAIN & MERCEDES B SUPPORT
This is their only one. I'm bummed.
The boys and girls are flirting!!
Mercedes is engaged? To someone from Gautier? It's just her father again.
Mercedes has no interest in this guy. It would've been pretty funny if she got engaged to some random guy lol.
Mercedes is a confirmed heart breaker, getting tons of proposals.
Sylvain just proposed to Mercedes lamo. He's offering to marry her just to block anyone else so Mercedes can live how she wants. 😭
HOW THE FUCK IS THAT THEIR ONLY SUPPORT 😭😭😭😭😭
They had, 1, 1 support, and it was a better romance story than most novels. 😭😭😭
The background music was so romantic too.
Guys, I propose all the Blue Lions just enter a poly marriage together, then I won't have to ever sort out all my ships.
SHEZ & INGRID B SUPPORT
So far just talking about some mercenary crew. Shez's old captain used to be in there.
This merc was super loyal to a noble and would help out with even farming and building stuff. Wonder where this is going.
Shez's whole point to this was telling Ingrid no one is tied to their role and can do what they want. The whole Ingrid struggling with being a noble and knight.
Oh, cool! Ingrid's grandmother knew Tobias. Nice tie in.
SYLVAIN & INGRID B SUPPORT
Oh, this is their first one!!!
Sylvain brought up someone acting up and Ingrid suspects Sylvain is talking about himself lamo. He's not.
Ingrid is just satisfied as fuck, because Sylvain now has to deal with someone like she used to have to deal with him, lamo.
Sylvain feels pressure to feel like the mature one of the group. Ah, that's cannon!!! Everyone always suspected he felt like he had to be the older brother to everyone.
Ingrid is just soaking this in. Queen deserves it.
Awww, Ingrid said she would've just abandoned him if she was really miserable and actually seemed to enjoy covering for Sylvain, on some level.
Basically the whole "we aren't kida nymore. We've grown up, hunh." Stuff. I love it. This is why you end up loving all of the Faerghus Four. Because they all build off each other soooo much.
HAPI & BERNADETTA C SUPPORT
Bernie's bug hunting. And when Hapi talks to her assumes Hapi's trying to kill her for no reason. So typical. Bernie is this close to being a good character is the game took her seriously.
They both enjoy carnivorous plants. I think Hapi just likes eating them though lamo.
Yep these two are not having the same conversation.
SHEZ & MERCEDES B SUPPORT
They worked together, and now are having a tea party together. Shez wanted to go out to eat. But Mercie is a lady of class and wants tea.
Mercie likes her sweets.
Ohhhh, Shez's mom incoming. The treats reminds Shez of something her mom used to make.
Sounds like Shez's mom lived the #cottagecore life, picking food from trees to make and living in a forest.
I think Mercie wants to live in the past days. She asks if Shez wants to and seems like she misses living with her mom 😭😭😭
Mercie. No. Why do all your supports get the sad face?
SHEZ & SYLVAIN B SUPPORT
Sylvain's studying magic hardcore. Probably to try and fix the Crest only gets access to super weapon thing.
Also gets to be the Sylvain is actually smart support.
Oh, classic fantasy trope, learning how to weaponize fireworks. Mat Cauthon says hi, Sylvain.
Sylvain's out here about to invent guns to Crests are useless. Empire, you guys are up shit creek if Sylvain invents guns, lamo.
I want guns, AG only route where everyone gets guns and this game ends realllllll fast.
Miklain and Sylvain have different moms?
Sylvain admires Sreng. Good. That's promising for the future.
Oh, Shez is actually smart! Recognizing that when the king shows power (lends Sylvain's family soldiers), then everyone else loses power.
Sylvain loves the Kingdom 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 he's like "he's a half-frozen stretch of dirt, but it's MY half-frozen stretch of dirt. And only home I've got."
Eat shit every "Sylvain makes so much sense in CF" person.
SHEZ & ASHE B SUPPORT
More Shez's mom talk. She thinks her mom was weird and mysterious.
Mystery mom was really smart, knew a lot, and knew magic.
I'm glad some of these are actually about Shez. Helps flesh her out so much. I actually really like Shez.
Awww, Ashe is going to help Shez investigate. Because he knows how it feels. Poor baby looked for info on his parents and couldn't find much. 😭😭😭
Blue Lions need a "sadness incoming" warning on all their supports, ISTG. Or maybe I'm just way too attached lamo.
Ashe is willing to visit the village with Shez in the future to help her find her mom.
This was so fucking wholesome, guys. 😭😭😭😭😭😭
SETETH & FLAYN B SUPPORT
I cannot believe they don't have an A support. Whyyyyy?
Seteth is like "Flayn, you're making yourself useful! How dare you!"
Man, it's weird hearing her call him brother.
Ok, I'll cut Seteth some slack. He's terrified Flayn will fall into an endless sleep again. Poor dude. Right when he lost his wife too.
This support would be so confusing to someone who didn't play Houses.
😭😭😭😭😭😭 Flayn is afraid of sleeping because of this. Poor, baby.
Oh, finally! She called him father 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Poor baby Flayn just wants peace.
They're also so scared of what will happen if they lose the war. Oh, God, I can't keep playing Edelgard's route.
"If I lost you, I'd love the very meaning of my life." - Seteth to Flayn.
Flayn's like I'll eventually grow up, dad. lol. But she won't leave him all alone.
Don't worry, Seteth. I will literally never leave you supportless.
MAIN BATTLE/STORY
Hyped for this one, guys.
I don't want to deal with Cornelia's weapons, ugh.
RODRIGUE AND GUSTAVE ARE OK 😭😭😭😭😭😭 Ifan is alright too. She sounds badass.
But what about Dedue? And Dimitri?
Man, Rodrigue is such a badass.
Western Lords aren't alone. Let me guess, TWSITD? And those two are creating a diversion?
Annette told Felix off, lamo. Saying they need to go help them out. But Felix just wants to rescue Dimitri.
But they know Dimitri won't leave the prison until the people are safe.
Ashe mentioning Dedue. All the points. 😭😭😭😭😭😭
See Felix take command like that does things to me.
Dedue and Rodrigue!!! They're back 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Cut scene in the middle of a battle.
Dimitri's like why did you show up. Idiot. He won't leave though 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 He's too worried about the people. Plus, he's Dimitri, so.
He's like Idk if I die. Dedue is like shut the fuck up, Dimitri. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 "I will not allow it." (is what he actually said and holy hell in a deep, badass voice) Dedue just told Dimitri off. Good. So now we know that Dedue can and will push Dimitri around if need be.
And then hand holding a spear. Because that's not suggestive.
Oh, badass Dimitri in the cut scene. And Dedue got a moment.
OMG. Guys, is that fanservice? I think I just got fanserviced.
They somehow made it Dimilix and Dimidue in the same scene.
Ok, but this game has been serving Dimilix, but can we note Dimitri didn't take Felix's hand? Dedue had to like storm in and put his hand over Dimitri's and force him to pick up the weapon? And it was DEDUE who made Dimitri change his mind? Felix got to lead the mission. Both getting the spotlight.
Guys, like, I need to rewatch that like a thousand times. Because we also can't skip the Dimitri and Dedue being complete badasses afterwards shots.
DIMITRI'S BACK. I CAN USE HIM AGAIN. Ohmygod I forgot how strong he is. 37 strength. WTF Dimitri.
Margrave Gautier just showed up. Holy hell this is epic.
Wait, Cornelia just talked about tearing Dimitri's eyes out. Does this confirm that bitch took his eye in Houses?
Dimitri finished her off with Atrocity. Seems fitting.
Cornelia's like don't kill me! Or the truth will never be known. Dimitri's like ofc, bitch.
So Cornelia arranged most of the pieces of the Duscur. So glad Dimitri's finally getting to ask all these questions 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Edelgard knows what happened to Patricia? Or is Cornelia blowing smoke?
This bitch is about to warp, ugh. Though, that means I get to kill her again, so not too upset.
Man, is AG really going to focus on Dimitri discovering the truth about Duscur and fighting TWSITD because if that's the whole plot . . . I'm so happy 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
But like, why does Dimitri get the whole new plot? Edelgard and Claude are getting crumbs. Oh well.
Dimitri, Rodrigue, and Dedue have rejoined you. Helllll yesss.
Dimitri ready to go after Cornelia. But Felix saying to chill.
Ohhhh Felix got words for Dimitri this time. He's yelling at Dimitri for taking on too much by himself. Calling Dimitri out for not listening.
Ingrid's like, Felix stop. Felix isn't listening.
Dimitri just called killing Rufus "murder." Like stawp. Dimitri, it's self-defense at that point. I swear to God Dimitri would find a way to blame himself for cancer 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
He didn't choose any of this 😭😭😭😭😭😭
He wants to take all the guilt for Edelgard's and Rufus's and TWSITD's actions. Baby, no. 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Felix is telling everyone else to tell Dimitri to knock it off lol.
OMG, I'm so glad for this scene. They're all telling Dimitri not to shoulder everything alone. 😭😭😭😭😭😭 Guys, this is the missing scene from AM that I was desperate for.
Guys, this route is like 10000000x better than the other two.
I need to write some kind of hybrid AG/AM route.
Cornelia's in pain. Good. She's getting the Western lords whipped into a frenzy lamo.
And you know what, no Byleth or Jeralt! I'm so fucking tired of them showing up every. single. battle. Good on AG to knock that off for at least 1 chapter. It gets fucking old.
God, this chapter. I'm going to be thinking about this for a long time.
Man, I really am tempted to just drop the other two routes and only play AG. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

s hello have any brainworms for roleswap dmvn formed in your mind yet....... bc im gnawing at the bars of my cage thinking about them
ALL RIGHT i've let this collect dust for long enough, I think.
Worldbuilding things!
Dimitri's parents are alive. Rufus is the equivalent of Miklan in this story, and I think he steals Areadbhar during month four of school. TBD.
The tragedy of Duscur doesn't happen, because Matthias' methods are the low-and-slow type rather than Lambert's "let's go have peace talks right now actually."
What DOES happen is the very beginnings of an armistice between Sreng and Faerghus, which is just as much a ploy by the slitherers now as it was in Duscur, and results in the incapacitation of Matthias as well as the death of the Queen and Miklan (and the usual cast and crew that got done in in Duscur, like Glenn).
Dimitri was there, but things play out a little differently. Still has absolutely bonkers levels of survivor's guilt. Why did Glenn have to lose his life instead of him? The queen and prince, too?
Felix's feelings on Dimitri are far more mixed because of it, I think. But that's another discussion (fic?).
Matthias shuts down on all attempts to make peace with other countries. He does put everything he has into trying to restabilize Faerghus, but his mind kinda snapped watching his son and wife die before his eyes. Sylvain straddles the line between hating him and feeling bad for him.
I'm sure I could have reworked this to make sense to include Duscur the way they have been, but brain running on fumes, so we'll take what we get. Feel free to imagine a character with a similar narrative role coming from Sreng instead. Maybe it's the son of the chieftain they . . . captured/took in/who the fuck knows.
Onto the dimivain of it all <3
Every hangup Sylvain has about people thirsting after his Crest and not him is cranked up to eleven, because now the chances of someone wanting the prestige of being his spouse (and by extension, a monarch) are ridiculously high.
Gautier territory is where it is, but the royal family lives in Fhirdiad. Because Blaiddyd territory is so close to where they actually are, the family charged with keeping them safe is pretty obvious. (Their monster of a Crest certainly doesn't hurt.)
Sylvain tries to poke Dimitri's buttons about this. "Doesn't it bother you? That you're stuck with me because of something you didn't choose?"
Dimitri doesn't have a real answer right away. He says something about being honoured, not caring to know another manner of life, same old same old. There's something in it about making your circumstances your own rather than fighting them tooth and nail that's at odds with Sylvain's perpetual "I know what I'm headed for but that doesn't mean I've gotta like it!"
Dimitri tries to tell Sylvain that bedding random women is not a great image for the crown prince. Sylvain loses his brain cells and asks if it'd be a safer rumour to have the crown prince be in love with his retainer.
Dimitri doesn't take him seriously for even a second.
Sylvain has never been more serious in his life.
"Dimitri, come on, you haven't ever said my name! I think you came out of the womb being all 'Your Highness' this, 'Your Highness' that." "I'm not sure what you mean, Your Highness." "You're so full of it! Just once? Please?" "I'm afraid not, Your Highness."
Sparring = flirting? Dimitri loses his composure whenever Sylvain really gets into it and tries to win, but it's a 50-50 chance on whether he actually succeeds.
Sylvain refuses to make the first move, when it's like that. Dimitri's heart's too big, and Sylvain doesn't want to know if he's being placated or pursued.
Unfortunately! Things get blown to bits during the timeskip. Dimitri damn near loses his life trying to prevent Sylvain from being captured by Cornelia's men, but he manages it. Unfortunately, he's still got a hell of a lot of wounds to lick while the Gautiers regroup in Gautier territory. The surrounding lords are skilled enough at diverting search parties before they can stumble upon a humble-looking cabin in the woods that houses Faerghus' most important people.
Sylvain's heart breaks when he sees his best friend, the boy who'd been sworn to him since the first time the sun came up, looking like hell now lived inside him.
"What are you doing? You've done your share, Dimitri. You don't have to do this anymore." You don't have to hurt yourself for me anymore. Please don't hurt for me. If you die for me, I worry that I couldn't even hate you for it.
Dimitri hasn't let go of Areadbhar since he returned. Maybe once, because eating had required it. But he sets it down in that moment and approaches so that there's no more than a handful of inches between them.
"You asked me if I was bothered by having to stay by your side. Do you think I would not have fled, across the sea or over the mountains, if I didn't want to stand where I've stood all these years?"
"But you--" But you didn't have a choice.
Dimitri looks off in the distance. "Does a hound choose to be a carnivore? A flower, to flourish in the sun?"
"Those are bodily functions, Dimitri. Don't think that counts."
"Ah. I haven't made it clear then."
Sylvain loses it a little when Dimitri leans closer.
"I breathe, and I wake, and I think of you, and if there was ever a moment of doubt that you're the cornerstone of my heart, Sylvain, I'm afraid that was an error on my part."
Sylvain wants to say something about how Dimitri could have easily had the entirety of Garreg Mach's student body chasing after him like a pack of wolves after prey, but Dimitri has willingly walked into the trap of his arms, so Sylvain is in no mood to spook him away (read: irritate him in the way Dimitri never admits to being irritated).
They have rings, Blaiddyd-silver and gems coloured Gautier-teal, that are always there under gloves and gauntlets.
People say that King Sylvain never married because he grew tired of the women that cycled through his chambers. Dimitri doesn't particularly like listening to people run their mouths that way, but protecting Sylvain from prying eyes and centuries-old expectation has always been more important than defending his honour.

ok here's them throuses fic recs in a format that won't cap my character count: "Watchtower" by mareza [https://archiveofourown.org/works/20755727] Sylvain angst abt Gautier's role as defending the border with Sreng extended towards that idea of "I spent so much time look out that I failed to look in". Goes from pre-game to war phase. Tone is dramatic and sad. Faerghus is where fun happy people go to have that fixed, etc etc "a poem for strong things (boy with crest)" by.. oh this is also mareza lmao. [https://archiveofourown.org/works/20568998] it IS About Dimitri but uhm. well. ok the premise is that school phase some of the kids are speculating on if dimitri's crest means he would injure a sexual partner and several of them bet on if they can seduce him to find out. it's a school phase comedy that features everyone on your faves list (sylvain most, dorothea also a significant amount, edelgard is only there for a couple scenes but she has opinions). It's a lot of talking about Dimitri obviously since he's the subject of their bet, but each of the characters participating in the bet has a segment that's told from their PoV so you're really getting more on what /they're/ thinking rather than what Dimitri is doing or thinking. If you are worried about the implications of "a bunch of people are trying to seduce this sad wet boy under false pretenses" he's ok in the end. "homeroom (or, if we're not recruited in 15 minutes, we're legally allowed to leave)" by Schistosity [https://archiveofourown.org/works/24140818] school phase comedy again (ahh the sweet summer days for the tragic future world leaders with magic powers) this time taking place in a world where byleth recruits everyone except edelgard, hubert, claude, and hilda, and it follows their unlikely antics while literally everyone else is (mostly) off screen doing game event stuff. it's well-written, sweet, and fun "my fellow passerine" by... goddamnit, also Schistosity. I swear I've read more than just these 2 authors. [https://archiveofourown.org/works/24625273/chapters/59492041]. OK PREFACE this one is about Claude (from Cyril's POV) and spoils some important Claude stuff that you may have seen Suggested but not outright Said, and also some specifics related to that which are not revealed until later in the game than where you are I THINK it's been several years since I played throuses so WARNINGS. actually maybe don't read this one until you're done with claude's route or at least pretty far in there. once you know all the claude stuff. but ok but I did not care at all of Cyril's worship of Rhea and this fic makes me appreciate Cyril. So it gets props for that. Finally, in honor of Time Travel Fics, "I Know, I'll know (that you were my future, and you were my past)" by placesinfive [https://archiveofourown.org/works/42667977]. Blue lions route takes place nebulously in war phase. Byleth time powers hijink sends the gang back in time where they have brief encounters with younger versions of... each other. Each of these little scenes is very sweet, and the author put a lot of thought into who meets who. Shout out to Annette's, Ashe's, and Mercedes' segments which make me feel things. There is a final section where they all reconvene and have awkwardness about meeting each others' past selves that honestly I think... ehh, "weakens the whole" is a bit harsh but I think the fic could have done without it. Maybe the author wanted to end on some levity? Or maybe the author just liked it and wanted to have it! They can do whatever they want, I'm not a cop.
I tried to keep my blions bias out of this but I am also dedicating this fic rec list to this post/tweet which I think about constantly: https://www.tumblr.com/pierroticism/712250352420978688 He is a man who murders women. Not just kills. But murders.
yayyy yay yippee yay so looking forward to these! blue lions’ connections to one another made me INSANE so very felt on that front. that said. well. edelgard 🫶. i’ve read some good more shippy stuff which i can dm to you if you’re interested and also one petra fic where it doesn’t Quite work but there’s enough in there that it really really gets you thinking about her. i’ve been tearing thru a lot of fic lol. but i need to read more black eagles )-: i was sort of expecting to like sylvain (he is a blorbo in law turned blorbo i guess ) but i didn’t know anything about him so it was very shocking and annoying right until i Got him. that said i tried to start w blue lions but i played black eagles first since edelgard bewitched me completely. i’m still obsessed w her. blue lions is fun but since their ending is like “bandaid happy ending” it was hard to play. also because i hate the church lol. but yes. dm me 🫶 or message me on discord either works. i’ll let u know what i think of the fics as i read them! :-3

Three houses has repeatedly stated that Edelgard's and Claude's goals aren't that different. (Even if they really are pretty different???) Has Claude be willing to surrender in favor of helping out the empire later when he's got an axe to his throat. Seems to me it's less "This is out of character and bad writing" and more "This isn't isn't what I expected and I don't like it." Also you can't really go "This isn't canon" When it has writers from three houses writing for the game lmao
spoiler talk, mostly for GW and a bit for SB
Nonnie. Pal. Buddy.
If 3Hopes Claude was written in line with 3H Claude, and he is ready and willing to join Edelgard - for whatever reason, even if to backstab her - then why doesn't he... do that. In 3H. Like on CF or AM or SS, where Byleth isn't around to *~guide him~* (which is the most common explanation I’ve seen given to his character portrayal in 3Hopes, but also applies to other possible explanations).
What part of that makes any sense? What stopped him from doing that in 3H, outside of 3Hopes writing his character badly? Why is it when Byleth has no influence on him in 3H, or when he doesn't trust the Church in 3H, or when he doesn't have many friends/bonds in 3H - all those things that are the same in 3H as they are in 3Hopes - does he not do in 3H what he does in 3Hopes? In fact, why does he not flat out join Edelgard genuinely on CF, since he's apparently oh so willing to join Edelgard and/or kill Rhea and on CF there's Byleth to act as a Stamp of Approval?
I mean, I could tell you what stopped him from doing that in 3H; his base, core moral standards, that he always has as part of the foundation of his character. He does not like causing needless bloodshed and always avoids doing so whenever possible, he does not like Edelgard's methods and thinks them too harmful, he does not trust Edelgard in general, his curiosity over the Church's/Rhea's secrets stops him from ever outright destroying it/killing her (along with his acknowledgement that both the Church and Rhea - or someone in her position - are needed for Fodlan). You cannot write Claude properly without keeping in line with these base facts about his character, unless you've established a pretty damn in-depth character arc that dissolve these traits off of him.
So, yes, when I see him cause needless bloodshed, utilize similarly harmful methods like Edelgard, trust in Edelgard's word and nothing else, reject any curiosity he has for the Church/Rhea in favor of just killing Rhea without getting any answers (because Claude certainly gives no shit about answers to mysteries amiright), yeah, I'm gonna call it out of character and bad writing. Because it is out of character and bad writing.
Cuz, like, "[3H] Has Claude be willing to surrender in favor of helping out the empire later when he's got an axe to his throat" those circumstances - and the results of them - are nowhere near comparable to what happens in GW, and is (and sorry if this sounds rude) a bad description of what happened in CF. Claude in CF surrenders and agrees to leave Fodlan entirely and pleads with Edelgard to leave the Alliance - and his friends - alone because he swears they'll be cooperative. Maybe I'm stupid, but that doesn't sound anything like "hey Edelgard let's team up and invade the Kingdom because Rhea Bad lol” or “I think it’s a good idea to instigate conflict between Faerghus and Sreng to make the Kingdom weaker (you know that thing TWS did for Edelgard with Duscur).”
Claude in 3H does not actively help Edelgard at any point in all of 3H. Ever. The most he does to "help" her is, again, swearing that the Alliance won't stand up against her, and that wasn't to help Edelgard as much as it was him trying to keep the Alliance safe. Because that goes back to his want to keep the bloodshed to a minimum. That core character trait of his that is completely absent in GW, because siding with the one causing the bloodshed and himself causing the bloodshed does literally nothing to stop the bloodshed as 3H!Claude shows is his belief because he never sides with Edelgard *specifically because of her blood-filled methods.* The ones that he is literally replicating in GW.
Because, again, there is literally. No. Reason. Why, if it is in-line with Claude’s character to side with Edelgard, that he wouldn’t just side with Edelgard in 3H (or do the equivalent of that like he does with Dimitri, like giving over Failnaught), because there are exactly zero things that differ between the two games that would explain him not doing that in CF for 3H. In CF, he does not have Byleth to help him open up to others. In CF, he would have Byleth actively feed into his distrust of the Church because of their decision to side against it. In CF, he wouldn’t have many bonds with others. And yet and still, he does not join Edelgard on CF, he does not harm the Church in any way on any route (higher ups or not), he only “invades” the Empire after it’d already made multiple assaults against the Alliance army and never invades the Kingdom in any way - on and off his route we see time and time again him make a resolute stance to not assist the Empire/Edelgard in any direct way, to not cause undue bloodshed, to keep fighting to the minimum he can, and the one “exception” is still not meant to help Edelgard or to take down the Church/Rhea but to keep his people safe from harm.
And it’s just because in 3Hopes, Claude is not written in character. He is going against multiple core facets of his character that was established in 3H with no development - positive or negative - to explain why that is. And given that this is literally a self-described “alternative storyline” - AKA, it is not 3H - then I can in fact say that this isn’t canon because it literally isn’t. I accept 3Hopes as its own story separate from 3H as that is 1) what it sells itself as, and 2) the only nice way to explain away all of the blatant contradictions between it and 3H. Which include Claude lol

I know everybody is taken with all the Dimilix in Three Hopes, but I feel that we should explore the relationship between Sylvain and his Sreng friend (Leif, I have seen floating around as his name)!
Like, I get he was supposed to be a hostage but it seems that the Margrave treated the boy more like a foster child, playing chess and teaching him the language etc, etc. Also seems that Sylvain interacted with the child a fair bit. So where is my friend-fic?
I would write myself but I am struggling with time. Unfortunately :(
Edit:
The boy's name is Leif, and he is the son of a Sreng chief. So I imagine that Sylvain might have achieved peace with Sreng in his Three Houses ending by leveraging his relationship with Leif! So... umm... Sylvain writers, friend fics please!

i know you said hopes had negative character development for the cast, but who do you think is better in hopes than in houses?
Better like in better writing, or better as in I appreciate them more?
Without a doubt, I'd say Felix and Sylvain who are better in Nopes than their FE16 versions, and in a way... Rhea herself, thanks to having more screentime when she isn't PTSD'ing lol
Call it chauvinism, but Sylvain in Nopes was scrubbed out of everything that made him... unlikable/feel flat in Houses.
His sob story about people only wanting to fuck him for his title/crest really felt... straight out ripped from some High School AU, with John McChad acting like an ass because the only girls who want to date him are interested in his situation as a heir of his dad's big company, and not because they love him. Yay. Great. Perfectly what I'm looking for in my medieval fantasy game where you whack people with swords.
Add to that the focus on crusts being the supposedly only reason why people are lusting over him - and not because, hey, you're a member of one of the most important noble houses in the Kingdom - to play in the general "crust bad" orchestra that can lead on the Supreme path, and the fact it's never ever adressed, and we have... this, which completely, to me, hides the other parts of Sylvain's character - like being someone who thinks outside of the box and resolves to lessen the reliance on his relic to defend the border by... creating a situation where they'll be no tension at the border, aka, a peace with Sreng.
Now, Sylvain works so well in Nopes partly because all of his "wah ladies only want my penis because i'm rich :'( " is erased, so we see a character who takes his duties as the heir of Gautier seriously, assists his Lord and friends and bring "new ideas" to help everyone. Sylvain, under his frivolous appearance and behavior, actually thinks and learns and suggests a lot of things that are quite useful, a bit like a "what if Sain wasn't only interested in courtship, but was raised as a future lord and had insight and suggestions on what to do". So sure, it's not as quirky and memorable as John McChad's sophomore year of school, but it fits better, imo, in the FE series.
As for Felix, well, it's more or less the same, his entire "duh boar bad chivalry bad and stupid - but wait no don't die and i'm sorry to have hit you dad i liked you but I was too busy playing the tsundere that I never got to say it to you before you died" schtick felt... old and annoying in FE16.
Sure, Felix can have his own, personal feelings about Dimitri being a hidden boar, but Felix is also the only heir of Rodrigue, and will become the next Duke Fraldarius, aka the second most important person in the Kingdom after the King himself, and the one tasked to protect it. Should Felix completely ignore his feelings and do what is expected of him, or take his role seriously? No, and Nopes has him give some "boar this, boar that", but Felix isn't a petulant 16 years old who wants to be "edgy" anymore, Felix is the next Duke - something he never shied away from, especially in his FE16 paralogue! - and has to start learning the job, thinking about Faerghus in something else than small jabs thrown at Dimitri and how to protect its people and second the King.
Heck, Felix's support in Nopes with Dimitri where Dimitri confesses about the ghosts, where Felix tries to carry him, the more or less cutscene where the general feeling is him saying to Dimitri he can count and rely on them... Given how FE16's Felix was written, even in AM, I can't see it happen before Rodrigue's death... and yet, in AG, Rodrigue is still alive (his optional death doesn't change those scenes), so when FE16's Felix realises there were more important things to do to help both his friend and country and dad but he only noticed it too late because he was too busy... being edgy, Nopes has him drop the edgy act (not completely drop it though, else it wouldn't be Felix anymore!) and act (lel) as his FE16 self, but only, without needing his dad to die first.
As for Rhea...
Having more screentime seriously helps, just like being allowed to talk about non plot relevant things with someone else than Billy or about Billy, I gushed a lot about the Nabatean paralogue, but it depicts her relaxing with her family (pissing on the "u r the only person i can talk to myself not the archbishop" pandering shit from FE16 even if FEH pissed on it first) and making tiny baby steps at apologising and confessing part of her guilt (for something completely stupid like Seiros the Warrior "borrowing" Cichol's shield to gift it to Willy!) to a member of her family.
Would that mean she would have confessed about the rez Sothis plan to Seteth earlier on? I... don't know, don't think so, and we don't have enough interactions between the two.
Compared to FE16 where she is an oyster until Billy turns green and Seteth nags her again and again and again, here she willingly makes the first step to apologise... sure, it's for something silly and not, resurrecting their mother, but it feels like a small progression (tiny baby steps) from FE16 where she has to be reveal stuff due to forced circumstances.
I also like how it sort of teases (or maybe that's just me lol) Seteth realising that Rhea still misses days long past to an unhealthy degree (tfw too much nostalgia), or just, having to remind her twice that those days are gone. Would he later realise her strange nostalgia hides something more deep, and ultimately her wish to "return" to those days by resurrecting Sothis?
idk, it's fuel for HCs and AUs, but for what it's worth, this paralogue and Nopes in general help flesh out Rhea more than what FE16 does, aka tying 80% of her mentions/appearances to Billy and Sothis.
(hell, in Nopes, she finally has lines with Flayn!)

It's so annoying that SO many people are saying "Claude fans complaining about his Hopes writing just had a warped fanon version of him in their head" when, like. They're the ones actively saying stuff about his character that legitimately never happened.
"Claude was always power-hungry, curiosity and peace came after that" -> Claude LITERALLY comes to Fodlan because he was curious about it. He wanted to see for himself how Fodlan was so he could form his own opinion on it after everyone around him kept saying it was a land of cowards. Curiosity ALWAYS came first regarding Claude's character, it's the entire reason he does pretty much anything.
"Claude lied about running away from Almyra, his parents knew he left" -> His parents knowing about his running away is what he himself literally says happened, as early as Chapter 3 of 3H. Also "running away from the country that's been shitting on you" and "having your parents about you're about to run away" aren't mutually exclusive things, like, at all.
"Claude was always opportunistic" -> He always takes an extremely solid stance against Edel.gard, in every single route in the game. He'll straight up leave the entire continent over siding with her. There's clearly a limit to his opportunistic tendencies that Hopes ignores completely.
"Claude always hated Rhea and wanted her dead" -> Claude thought about a world without Rhea in it but literally never tries to kill her, and never sides with the ONE person the in entire game trying to kill her. His side - whether through his own efforts or that of Judith's - is always the side that finds out the Empire took Rhea, and his own route ends with him having amicable terms with her.
And then there's the stuff that even his fans don't have an explanation for why he did them that could align with his 3H counterpart.
Invoking a war that happened 300 years ago as justification for invading the Kingdom, when the Kingdom is currently doing absolutely nothing to them? That thing that runs diametrically opposed to pretty much everything Claude as a character stands for? No explanation, or even much acknowledgement that it happened.
His complete LACK of curiosity, a foundational part of his character? No explanation, other than the non-explanation of "well it wasn't THAT important!"
Enflaming a border war between Faerghus and Sreng, despite all of his trauma resulting from the aftereffects of what happens when two bordering countries hate each other? No explanation, and is just called "interesting" with no basis as to WHY it's interesting other than "it's different."
But god forbid you point any of this out, else you'll get hit with one of
"You never understood Claude's character"
"You only liked a fanon version of Claude"
"Well he didn't have Byleth and Garreg Mach"
"Don't be so negative"
"So you're accusing the people who like Claude in Hopes as being fake Claude fans?"
With that last one being especially telling because of just how defensive it is - never said that, weird of them to think that. Almost like yeah, trying to say you like a character after that character had every core aspect of who they were stripped away and replaced with something that was nothing like who they were before... makes it sound like you never ACTUALLY liked that character. Makes it sound like you only liked them superficially.
Which I know isn't the case with ALL Hopes!Claude fans, but yeah, it's damn sure a good bit of them. They never liked Claude and how nice he was, they liked his draft version and are happy they got something like it, and now they're complaining when told that.
Sorry for the long rant and the negativity it has, but man does hearing people say this when at this point it's clearly projection.
Yeah, Claude has always been super nosy and wants to learn everything he can about anything that he takes interest in. He's even admitted he does it to a fault and sometimes feels bad about it afterward when he realizes how far he prods (i.e. to the point of potentially making others uncomfortable). One of the reasons I was disappointed with his characterization in Hopes was the lack of his curiosity and interest in things happening in Fodlan.
On that note too, it's part of why attacking the Kingdom "worked" - because he didn't have any curiosity, thus no desire to learn about them. If he took the time to ask even a few questions, he could've solved a whole lot of misconceptions in just a few minutes. If he was interested in learning about Fodlan in Hopes, he would have wanted more information about the Kingdom before attacking. He wouldn't have just made assumptions about them/why they were helping Rhea/etc - not even White Clouds Claude would have been that one dimensional about it (that being, he hadn't been through his full year yet so he wouldn't have the same level of knowledge then either).
Claude running away from Almyra was probably both due to wanting to see Fodlan for himself and to get away from all the danger. Even for someone like him, there's only so much of that shit you can take before enough is enough. I don't mind whether his parents knew or not, though I find it odd for Nader to have said Claude was "the favorite child". In Houses Claude just kind of seemed to see his parents as a "that's the way it goes" kind of thing with their "tough love", but if Claude was "the favorite child", I'm not sure why he was constantly in so much danger. You'd think the king himself would have put a stop to it and threatened to do something to Claude's attackers, like, I don't know, threaten to execute anyone who dared to attempt to assassinate a literal prince. Regarding the other siblings, if they were so far gone that they were attempting to kill their own half sibling regardless of what their parent(s) said, I can't imagine his father was really all that close to Claude? If Claude was in as much danger as he implies in Houses, then it doesn't sound like daddy dearest did much to make sure he was always safe. It feels like he did some things, but just... not enough? I mean if my kid was in danger like that I'd be doing a lot more to make sure they weren't going to be killed. His dad loved him oh so much, yet he still ran away. He didn't just go to Fodlan - he didn't plan to go live with his grandfather for a while and send letters in his absence with everything being hunky dory. He ran away.
The opportunistic takes from some people are one my biggest NOPEs. Claude is an opportunist, but not to the point of siding with an enemy he was, canonically stated as (thank you Rodrigue dearest xoxo hugs kisses smoochies you always have the tea for all occasions) firmly against the Empire. In no route in Houses does he ever side with Edelgard. He says he doesn't want to kill her, but he'll do it if she won't stop fighting. Also, he explicitly said right to her face that because of her his long held ambitions were nearly ruined. That's not... something you say to someone you wanna side with in a war. A lot of people, including the writers, seem to believe that you have to pick a side: either Rhea or Edelgard. There's literally no "neither" option in either game. In Houses though, Dimitri and Claude both side with Rhea, or to be more exact, the Church under Seteth's command (i.e. not explicitly Rhea, but they were allying together as two losing sides). In Hopes, instead of letting Claude not pick a side since he didn't like Rhea, they just... forced him to side with Edelgard because ???
Also, I think it's important to consider that in Houses, Claude always sides with whoever is opposing Edelgard. In VW, he allies with Seteth and the Church and wants to side with the Kingdom, but because Dimitri dies in VW that didn't happen. In AM and VW both, Claude wanted to ally with the Kingdom before Gronder happened, which is clear when he says the Kingdom doesn't look like they're interested in joining forces. He went into that battle hoping they would want to (and he probably planned for it in AM seeing as he had previously sent an agreement to do so, thanks Rodrigue for the tea AGAIN bc you can't rely on anyone around here except Tea Spiller for vital information and happenings!!!). In other words, under no circumstances did he accept what the Empire was doing... and he could've surrendered to the Empire at any time in any route, but in CF he only does so once he's defeated and has his life spared, meaning he literally fought to his almost death and only didn't die because you/Byleth decided to spare him. In the event you don't spare him, he fights against the Empire even if it kills him. He is literally willing to die fighting them.
Claude doesn't like Rhea in VW and that's the extent of it by the end of the game, tops. At one point or two he thought about what if she did die, sure, but that doesn't equate to him wanting to personally kill her. His thinking is more along the lines of “well it’d be a shame if she died /s” and not “we should go kill her”. He located her whereabouts because he understood by then (whether it’s VW or AM) that regardless of his personal feelings about her, most of Fodlan either needed her or cared about her.
Attacking the Kingdom is bad enough, but seeing him justify it with “well they started it 300 years ago lolz” was such bullshit to me. Like, no, legit, if anyone told me we were going to war because whoever was in power 300 years ago sucked and “they started it”, I’d tell them they’re fucking stupid and should not be someone holding a weapon. That was the most brain dead thing Claude has ever said between both games. Not only was it completely against his character, but it was literally the most bogus reason to go to war with anyone ever. “Hey, you know those guys from 300 years ago who are so long dead that they didn’t even know in their lifetime that we’d exist one day? Yeah? Those people who are literally ancient history and have no say in our lives? We’re gonna go to war because long dead people from Leicester didn’t like some long dead people from the Kingdom and, you know, I really think the citizens of the Kingdom who are living now in the present should pay for that. We should go invade their home because we have to hold them accountable for what was out of their not-born-yet control from 300 years ago!””
I really cannot believe Claude pulled the “well they did it first!” card as if someone they knew personally or someone with a high position in the Kingdom living right then drew first blood. There would not be a single person alive in the Kingdom who had anything to do with any of that from back then, and here Claude is justifying his war with... that. It’s literally stupid to begin with, but to put those words in Claude’s mouth of all people is an insult to his entire existence, honestly. The whole Faerghus and Sreng thing was definitely a big side eye for me considering he’s from Almyra.
The Byleth excuse is just dumb to me because Claude doesn’t need Byleth. He’s the same person in every route of Houses. It’s also noteworthy that Claude gave Failnaught specifically to Dimitri, not Byleth. All the other characters give their relics to Byleth to “hold onto” (game mechanics and shit), but Claude doesn’t give Byleth Failnaught thinking it’s Byleth who is going to end the war, and it’s not Byleth he called on for help when the Alliance needed the Kingdom. In CF if he survives he just says hi and bye to Byleth and leaves, with no “wow I sure hope we can bring our nations closer together after the war”. He didn’t ask for Byleth’s help in CF. It never had anything to do with Byleth specifically that he was who he was. In fact, if nothing else he really only saw Byleth as a means to an end for a while and even wanted to use the Sword of the Creator. Byleth was a tool for him for at least half of WC, and he even sometimes in VW doesn’t really think about Byleth’s feelings? Fuck ‘em, he wants to read Jeralt’s diary. Byleth is worried about Rhea so they should hurry and find her? Fuck that, he just wants answers from Rhea. They became friends, yes, but his entire existence does not revolve around Byleth and I see so many Claude fans hellbent on insisting things that basically equate to “he’s only a good person because of Byleth”. No, he has an entire character outside of Byleth and I’d appreciate it if people stopped reducing him to eye candy for their self insert version of Byleth. :)
It’s fine, I know a lot of people are upset about what Hopes did but also the way some players are reacting to it. I don’t mind if people like this version of him, but I hate how some players are treating Houses Claude fans. It’s ironic too because some of these people are the ones who at first were saying Hopes is just an AU, but now they’re insisting this was always Claude’s character.

Lambert is the type of man who always appears calm. Even when stuff hits the fan, he’s the one that’s got a level head and steps up to give direction. He’s always ready with a plan, even in the most unconventional of situations. Though these plans mostly include tackling the problem head on and winging it as he goes, somehow they always work out for him. He’s every bit a natural leader a King is expected to be and the people of Faerghus have never seen this man sweat.
Amongst his friends, his plans are terrible. Whose idea was it to try and ride a horse while standing? Lamberts. Whose idea was it to swap Captain Jeralt’s brand new bottle of expensive Adrestian wine for some of the cheap crap down at the market? Lamberts. And whose idea was to try and tame a giant wolf for the Faerghan Army? You guessed it: Lamberts. Papa Dorito is a chaotic disaster.
Rodrigue is the type of man who has quiet confidence coming out his butt. He’s not a bragger, unless he’s really trying to impress someone or someone riles him up or he’s drunk. But as the King’s right hand, he commands a room with his very presence. He’s not a big talker in public settings. He prefers to hear both sides, take some time to think carefully about the pros and cons of each, and then make his call. He’s an excellent listener and very in touch with the feelings of others.
Amongst his friends, he is the smooth talker. Someone has had to master the skill of communication to get them out of trouble or cover their butts with Lambert’s plans and it couldn’t be Lambert because he’s injured, laughing, or trying to drag a wild wolf back to the woods, and it sure as hell couldn’t be the emotionally constipated Matthias. He’s talked Lambert out of trouble and Matthias out of fights more times than he can possibly count. Papa Hot-Rod is a sweet-talking accomplice.
Matthias is the type of man who has no time to waste. He’s quiet, he’s serious, and he tells it like it is. He doesn’t do it to be a jerk, but he believes there’s no good that can come from sugar coating things. Not only does it give people false hope or security, but it accomplishes nothing because people don’t understand the weight or gravity of a situation. He hates skipping class, he hates missing training, and jokes during meetings or lessons are a waste of everyone’s time, goddess above Lambert some of us actually have work to do when they graduate.
Amongst his friends, he is one of the most thoughtful men you will meet. He cares deeply for everyone around him and that feeling has only been amplified by the fact that his house is the only thing between Sreng and Faerghus. His words can be ill thought out, but the love and worry behind them shines through clear as noon (if you know how to decode them). He’d do anything for his friends, including carrying them to a healer, distracting Captain Jeralt under the guise of a spar (it’s dual purpose for him), and coming up with the plan of taking the sides off of a few carts to make transporting the wolf easier. Papa Stone-Face is a silent protector.
