'IT' Discussions Pt. 1

yes theirs so much i could go into involving fears and repression and queerness and on and on and on in the 'IT' franchise (and i will, one day) but today to kick this all off we're going over something thats very near and dear to my heart and that ISSS (drumroll please) the use of opposites through the characters' depiction and character foils. lets do this one by one

Richie: The way he's depicted in both the book and movies, he acts like a fucking idiot lets be so real. he's dorky, and impulsive, and goofy, and typical mildly repulsive acting 13 year old boy but all in all depicted outwardly as an idiot. But when it matters. When its about how to find things, how to get around things and calm people down and get where they need to be and do what they need to do, Richies the one pulling through 9 out of 10 times. This boy is SMART. he pays attention and he remembers and he stays updated and informed. he acts like a goofy idiot to make those around him think he is (going into that more later) but in reality, he's the smartest loser. if he gets bad grades, he CHOOSES to. he knows his shit.

Eddie: where do i even start my dudes. obviously because of how his mother 'raised' (read: ruined) him, he's fucking scared. of germs, of new things, of everything, and not scared of the act of doing it but scared of what could happen when and if he does. he's a fucking scaredy cat. but genuinely? he's the fucking bravest. he's the one leading them, even if its Bev and Bill in the front. he pushes richie to do certain things, encourages stan, builds up bev and bill. when mike and ben get bullied by henry, eddies the one running in to do something about it and help them. yeah, he's constantly complaining about how shits gross and what could happen and this and that but only EVER as he's doing it. 'oh you could get poison ivy' as he's going into the bushes, 'oh this shit stinks' as he's pushing richie out of the way to climb into the sewer. for all his complaining and fear, he's the bravest.

Now on the topic of Rich and Eds, character foils, another use of opposites. Lets get into it pookies 😛

Now, every action has its equal opposite reaction. every thing that happens to one, that one goes through, that one does, the other has the opposite of that in the same way. So for every time Eddie comes home to an overbearing, intense mother, Richie comes home to an empty house and a note saying 'be back by 10' on the fridge. Every time Richie acts out just to make the others around him laugh so that he's worth something to keep around, Eddie sits there and shakes his head and smiles even though he told himself he wouldnt show too much feeling around them so he's not too much for those around him. one of them representing the fear of never being enough, never being GOOD enough, and one representing the fear of being too much, scaring those around him away. opposites.

but then theirs the purple to their Red and Blue. the similarities, where they mix and make something beautiful and painful. The constant fear of rejection and judgement of those around them. The repression and judgement of a small town in the 1980s and knowing, from the youngest of ages, that you're different, that your family is different and your mind is different and body is different. (come on, being gay and being on about 90 pills that arent even for fun in the 80s? one having divorced parents and one having parents that always fight and are always gone? they're all outcasts and repressed but these two istg). their purple.

the more you watch these movies and read the book, you can really pick up on more and more with it. how smart rich really is, how brave eddie really is, how similar they really are despite the differences in their situations and their characters.

Hi! Ok so first, your art is amazing. Second, could you… umm…. Maybe….. share some sasunaru thoughts? Maybe thoughts on an au where neither of them got married to women? I'm just gonna slap my sns headcanons here. Personally, I always like interpretations that are closer to canon, so I prefer the timeline where they do get married to women and the kids exist, but they find a way to move forward from that. ya know, coming out and trying to heal, having the hard conversations with sakura and hinata, feeling at peace once everything is out in the open. feeling understanding and acceptance where they thought they'd get only rejection. lol divorce arc. maybe I'm just a glutton for queer angst. could be. but hey, I'm happy to entertain any interpretations where sasuke and naruto end up together. cuz that's where they fucking belong.

Anyway, have my headcanons :)

Sasuke gets a really hard time from the rest of the konoha 12 when he visits the leaf, but the worst thing is they tell him how actually insane naruto was those four years trying to get him back and Sasuke CAN'T FUCKING DEAL

Naruto worries about Sasuke when he's out doing god knows what god knows where, shadow hokage business, whatever the fuck. So when he comes home, he tries to see to it that Sasuke gets the things he needs. He gently encourages him to rest, do things that relax him. Makes sure that Sasuke eats, tries to make him smile. Puts Naruto at ease

When Sasuke was little, I like to think Mikoto, who was sasuke's only GOOD or ENGAGED parent, knew who Naruto was and listened to sasuke talk about the annoying little blond boy in his class who he "couldn't stand". She been know, ya know what I mean? she been know.

While they spent those four years apart, both Naruto and Sasuke frequently had to double-take at strangers that slightly resembled the other. Sasuke's corpse shopping with Kabuto and they've gotta fucking stop what they're doing because a blond person with a orange shirt existed on the other side of town. Naruto's chasing every black-spiky-hair-looking motherfucker to the end of earth, screaming Sasuke's name, scaring the hell out of random people that look like Sasuke A Little Bit From The Back Maybe.

Naruto takes Sasuke's last name when they get married I don't give a FUCK. think of it. The honor, the affection, the vulnerability, the TRUST, THE BOND god fucking dammit I'm unwell

Naruto hates how Sasuke wears his hair over one eye now. he understands he has to hide the rinnegan or whatever, but he genuinely just hates it because he thinks Sasuke is so fucking beautiful and having half his face hidden is like. homophobic. how's he supposed to live laugh love in these conditions

Naruto is the only person Sasuke really feels the freedom to be himself around. Nobody else has ever been that for him, and nobody else will ever be.

Likewise, when Sasuke finally gets to the point where he's ready to let everything out, I think it will be with Naruto that he discusses his bother, the Uchiha massacre, the fucked up nature of his entire existence, how much he hates himself, etc.

I like the idea that everyone has always known that naruto and sasuke are in love with each other except them. Like they just walk through their lives, they don't even have to say anything and no one has to ask, by everyone around them just KNOWS. Orochimaru spends those years with Sasuke and when he sees Naruto, he's like oh right this is the one. Jiraiya listens to Naruto talk and talk about his rival and his promise to sakura and he's like Right Right I see what's going on. Kakashi knows, Tsunade knows, Itachi knew, everybody.

They love each other's kids. Sasuke sees Boruto and Himawari like little Narutos, and Naruto sees Sarada like a teeny weeny Sasuke. They can't fucking help themselves

I imagine them both becoming jealous easily, especially since they're both probably getting a lot of gifts and such from fans as successful handsome shinobi. Sasuke gets all passive-aggressive about it lol. Naruto just tries to laugh it off. Once and a while, they have a conversation about it accidentally and agree for the thousandth time that they've only got eyes for each other and "me and the dango vendor don't have anything GOING ON sasuke"

The following is a RANT because wedding impossible is got me in a RAGE

Istg I'm watching wedding impossible and why the heck are they trying to make Do Han look STRAIGHT-

Mans acting like a whole questionable second male lead when his stroy should have been given the screen time it deserved :D

Like even the little things like how when Do Han meets his ex there's no real indication that they liked each other at any point. Like you could pass him off as a stalker and be done with it. It's like the script is intent on making the queer aspect 'palatable' for mainstream straight audiences and shooting themselves in the foot.

Then this whole narrative of oh Ji Han and Ah Jeong shouldn't be blamed for something they didn't do - just - pause. The show is so insistent on making them victims when in reality they both have zero fucks about the situation they were putting everyone in.

Like they're literally running around public even though the engagement was announced? Like fake marriage or not this is literally about keeping your promises and not acting like absolute jerks.

And the press conference fake out- not the show spending the entire run saying it's "selfish" to not come out and then REFUSING to let Do Han to act on his own accord when he wanted to - because its totally not important for him to be the one deciding his own story ahahah -

And Also Ji Han's whole shtick about "living his life for his brother" is just absolute bs but the show does not want to admit it. Like the man literally planned his dream life of conquerorkng LJ and put Do Han in the picture cuz he knew the grandfather wouldn't give him the company.

And the audacity of this show to say that its wrong when Do Han wants to give up the company and not like the life he's been put up to but it's okay when Ji Han wants to give everything up? Like DO YOU HEAR YOURSELF.

I found it very difficult to believe that the brothers actually loved each other. Especially in Ji Han's case because he claimed that he's been living his life to guard Do Han and then he goes and BEATS HIM UP because being closeted in a homophobic country is SELFISH and suddenly the fact that it was a mutual contract doesn't matter because now thay he likes ah jeong she can do no wrong and is bejng used EVEN THOUGH she literally said yes on a whim with zero actual intent to "protect" Do Han. Girl literally did it for REVENGE.

I really enjoyed the first few episodes but then the direction they took was utterly exasperating.

In comparison to the big amount of ships I have I only have a handful I'm actually super serious about. So here are a few I like:

Merthur (Merlin + Arthur) from BBC Merlin: This goddamn kids show still has me deep in my feels after all this time. They're doing things to me. It's so sad that the series didn't get the treatment it needed and deserved because it was just for children. It had so much potential! The mutual trust and protection between the two is *chef's kiss*. They're soulmates in the most literal sense and belong together, are canonically destined to be with each other. What more do I need to say? And still, they're not canon. Unbelievable.

Andreil (Andrew + Neil) from the aftg trilogy: they have a super interesting, thrilling story, both the plot of the book and their relationship are fascinatingly fucked up and it draws you in. Despite their many issues and their rocky start they do have a really healthy relationship based on mutual trust, support and protection. I also like the imagine where we add Kevin and make it a throuple.

Mikayuu (Mikaela + Yuichiro) from Owari no Seraph: They're not canon but if they don't get together at this point it'd literally be unspeakably disrespectful because the way they act is so romantic, I've never seen a non-canon couple be so obviously in love. This is the most blatant queer baiting I've ever witnessed. Anyways, you could argue that they have a reason for their feelings, meaning that they're not genuine and only fabricated emotions, but idc, they're still obsessed with each other. Just because they have a reason for feeling the way they do doesn't mean that it's not genuine. Literally made for each other. The other characters also notice their fixation on one another.

Hualian (Hua Cheng + Xie Lian) from tgcf/ heaven official's blessing: I literally just finished this book series and already love them so much. It's a tragic and comedic story at the same time. I love when those genres are well balanced so that one doesn't destroy the other. They have their weird moments, like Hua Cheng being a little bit of a creepy stalker, which is why at some point I was slightly intimidated by him and completely understand why the side characters were terrified of him, but we know he's a great person and would never deliberately do anything harmful. They have a healthy relationship and as you may have noticed that's a really important aspect to me. BUT I do love angst and that's why beefleaf (He Xuan + Shi Qingxuan) from the same franchise are very dear to me as well, even though they wouldn't make a healthy couple.

Kanej (Kaz + Inej) from Six of Crows: badass characters that make me so emotional istg. But they make a power couple like no other. We stan the queen and the king. Again, a healthy couple, even though they're murderers. I just love how profound their relationship is. It isn't easy to cope with that kind of trauma and still want to be together. Also, the other two ships from soc are amazing as well.

Patrochilles (Patroclus + Achilles) from The Iliad: the OG gays. This story takes place 3200 years ago and it still makes me lose my mind when I think about it.

Caitvi (Caitlyn + Vi) from Arcane: I love their dynamic. They are both so cool in their own ways. And I have the biggest crush on Vi. I'm so impressed with this show tbh.

Yumihisu (Ymir + Historia) from Attack on Titan: Although aot/snk doesn't focus on romance at all and I like it that way, I do really like these two and I wish they could've gotten a chance.

Renga (Reki + Langa) and Matchablossom (Joe + Cherry) from SK8 the Infinity: Both are great ships respectively. The whole show is just for shipping and I love it.

Honourable mention: Khunbam (Khun + Baam) from Tower of God: I love colour coded relationships, they're kinda blue and red like Renga and Merthur. It's just funny to me that they don't romantically care about anyone else and their friendship is so intimate, at least from Khun's side, and while I don't think that they're ever gonna be a couple, it'd certainly be funny if the creator just pulled a gay trap on the readers. Reel them in with a battle based shonen webtoon and some straight baiting and then boom actually it's been setting up the queer ship all along. Oh how I'd laugh.

Honourable mention 2: Yoonmin (Yoongi + Jimin) from BTS: I'm sorry. It's just that I loved this ship when I still went to school. I hyperfixated on them because I needed something to obsess over to distract myself from my crippling depression. I don't normally ship real people because I don't want to make them uncomfortable, it's just for fun or as a joke. I am not serious about them, I just projected ship dynamics like grumpy + sunshine onto them and it brought me great joy. I even wrote a ff au when I was 14. Oh heavens, I have sinned.

Last Life: cottagecore queers. they started as friends, sure, they're best friends, but best friends who kiss, hold hands, cuddle together, cook together, stick to eachother like glue istg. AND I REPEAT !! KISS!! SURE SMALL PECKS BUT THATS NOT VERY FRIEND LIKE !! ive read many queerplatonic galaxy duo fanfics, but i think they're just romantically crushing on eachother and w time their relationship quickly escalated and neither of them wants to ask the big "what are we?" question. (plus, I hc every season of the series happens in a different season of the year, maybe in different years?? idk cause i didnt count for 3rd life but i dont think it would count as spring... ANYWAYS Last Life happens in Summer, for angst purposes)

Double Life: I don't wanna talk too much abt their relationship in DL cus it makes me so mentally ill, reminds me of sum personal lore in my life I wont get into, but I still love em. I hc soulmates have some shared features w their soulmates, different for everyone, like these two have the ends of their hair the color of the others hair. after the "divorce" Pearl tried to cut off that teal part but the ends just gew upwards, like the teal part just appeared in his new ends when moon cut off the old ones, so at the end he just used red dye to dye em red. Also I feel like they lowkey miss eachother even if both are too stubborn to talk to eachother and at least try to fix things. (winter. winter freezes. often killing all that in summer grew green)

Limited Life: Oh hoh ho... the drama is back but the toxicity is gone. frienemies, exes, a bit petty still but can joke about it for a lil, have forgiven eachother but at times still feel resentment. they live very far away, yet when they interact in person, if things are 1o1 and there isnt any of their allies nearby, gosh can the tension be cut with a knife. not only tension in the way or anger, but sometimes just being awkward around eachother, sometimes homosexual tension, sometimes homoerotic tension- (half joke, i wont talk abt nsfw stuff but theyre adults). They stare at eachother from across the room thinking either "i wanna punch you so bad" or "i would so go and kiss you right here right now", or both. However theyre still fairly friendly, its not the same as *Our Last Summer*, since they'll maybe pull petty pranks on eachother, specially the Nosy Neighbors on Mean Gills, with Pearl mostly having Scott's ever so slightly upset reaction, if even to get a groan or frown from him, tho he doesnt hate her anymore, its not like winter, thats in the past. Autumn comes and makes leafs fall... it gets rid of the dead waste of what winter killed, preparing for Spring...

Secret Life: ... for a new beginning. Spring comes along, a new, more lighthearted game at the start. After going through so much stuff together, everything they've overcome, "That's in the past" "It was a one time thing?" "Yeah, yeah" "Well, I'm glad we agree... glad we can move past that". And they start again, blank page, althrough clearly stained by past moments, they can look back at them fondly and joke around about it without hard feelings. Not only that, but they finally make up their minds, both of them get their shit together and can finally label their relationship, make it official... tho whats a game about secrets without some secrets of their own? So at first, with a bit of fear of what their allies would say, but also just in a way to keep privacy and get a laugh out of others confusions, they meet up in secret. Secret meetings at night or when their allies are out, whispering to eachother and giving eachother accomplice looks, finding hiden spots to sit down and talk. They're plenty suspicious in plain sight, but with all the reasons there could be for them to be hiding something? Maybe theyre up to no good! Maybe they're plotting destruction! Maybe its got to do with their tasks! Yeah, it drives the yellows mad in particular, trying to guess their tasks just to be told it couldnt be further from correct or that they already complited theirs. They sure do love fighting for dumb things for people who like to think they're the most intelligent beings to ever exist

I've seen those posts comparing (or in this case, contrasting) Ravi and Lucy, and people sure do think their opinion is the Right One, but I still find it very strange that queer fans are trying to police how other queer fans feel about the show introducing Lucy the way they did. While I agree that the reaction to Lucy is rooted in the fear that Buddie won't go canon, I also have to ask...why is that surprising to anybody? Why does that bother anybody? Queer fans are supposed to support potential het pairings now? We do realize that both Buck and Lucy are being presented as straight in canon, right? And that those weren't two bisexuals or two secret gays who kissed? Do we need to keep reminding people how headcanons don't erase/cancel out what the GA is seeing on screen? The sexuality ~discourse~ is people feeling personally attacked because "erasing" their headcanon that Buck and/or Eddie is bi feels like a dismissal of their own bisexuality/journey towards figuring out that it's perfectly fine to be attracted to more than one gender. (Never mind that one story is fictional and one is very real.) I know there's some who feel as strongly about their "repressed" POVs, but it's usually in response to those who are LIVID at the idea that Eddie didn't really want to be with Shannon or Ana like that. And now we can throw the Gay Buck opinions into the mix because people aren't liking those, either. Meanwhile I'm over here like "I just want them to be canon."
