Ship: Mike x Matt Helm
Word Count: 1.3k
Description: Mike tells Lovey about their feelings for Matt.
Mike was laying in a lace nightgown on Matt’s bed, watching him sleep. If they let themselves drift away from reality, they could almost imagine doing this years from now.
He grumbled in his sleep and flipped toward them. He looked much younger when he slept. He could've been any pretty woman’s husband. Many would've jumped at the chance. They couldn't help but wonder why he'd been alone all this time.
They never dared to ask.
The phone rang loudly and Mike answered it, hoping to stop it from interrupting Matt’s sleep.
“Hello?” Mike asked into the receiver.
“Hello, Mike. Is Matt there?”
It was MacDonald.
“Uh, yeah, hold on.”
They shook his shoulder lightly. “Matt, hey, Matt. MacDonald’s on the phone.” They shook him slightly rougher. “Matt.”
He mumbled something incoherent and opened his eyes slowly. He smiled at them warmly when he saw them. “Mornin’.”
Mike's stomach flipped. That smile could make anyone's stomach flip.
“MacDonald’s on the phone.”
Matt groaned. “You woke me up for that? I was having a nice dream.”
Mike rolled their eyes. “I'm sure you were.”
Matt smiled wider. “You were there.”
“Sure. What was I doing?”
“A little bit of this,” Matt said, and pressed a kiss to their lips.
“That all?” Mike asked when his lips left theirs.
“I don't know. You woke me up.”
“The phone rang.” Mike pointed out. “I'm sure it's important. You get paid a lot to be a spy, you might as well do it.”
“Five more minutes?”
“And have MacDonald calling the whole time?”
Matt stretched and sat up. “Grab me a shirt, would you? And some pants?”
“Since when am I your assistant? I don't even get paid.”
Matt kissed them again. “That enough?”
Mike grinned mischievously. “No but I might do it for one more.”
He rolled his eyes and kissed them once more.
They rolled off his circular bed and walked toward his dresser.
Once there, they said, “It's a wonder you don't have this automated. And stop staring at my butt.”
Matt laughed. “Put some clothes on then.”
“You're the only one naked. Also, that wouldn't help.”
Matt laughed again.
Mike threw a turtleneck, a pair of slacks, and underwear at him. “Want a coat or no?”
“Coat.”
Mike tossed him a matching coat to the pants.
Matt slid off his bed and got dressed.
“Why do you want me to leave so badly?” he asked as he pulled his pants on.
“I don't,” Mike admitted. “I just think our country needs you.”
“That's patriotic of you.”
“I don't like the government very much but I like Big O less.”
Matt pulled on his blazer and walked into his bathroom.
Mike walked over and leaned on the door frame. “You're making me regret waking you up.”
“Am I getting on your nerves?”
“Yes but that's not why.”
“Okay, why?”
“You look so cuddly.”
Matt laughed. “I hope the enemy doesn't think I look cuddly.”
“They won't,” Mike said certainly. “You can be very intimidating when you want to be. Especially with a gun in your hand.”
“Anyone looks intimidating with a gun pointed at you.”
He stepped out of the bathroom. “Do I look ready to take on the world?”
“Almost. Don't forget this.”
Mike kissed him.
His hands slid to their hips. “I won't.”
He pulled them into a kiss that made their head spin and their heart leap.
“See you later.”
“Yeah, later,” Mike said weakly, once Matt had already left.
Mike sighed. No matter how confident they acted while he was around, every interaction left them conflicted.
They switched from their nightgown to the short purple dress and thigh high boots they had on when they came in the previous night.
They spotted Lovey on their way out.
“Are you busy?” Mike asked her.
She shook her head.
Mike leaned against the wall and watched Lovey, who was at a desk typing.
“What do you do when Matt’s away?” Mike asked.
“Take calls. Type notes. Call friends. Sometimes I lounge in his bath. Other times I leave. I do have a life, you know.”
“I know.”
Mike bit their lip. “I think I've gone and done something stupid.”
“What's that?”
“I like Matt. I might even love him.”
Lovey frowned. “I see.”
“I know he'll never like me back, not really. I'm not sure if I'm even anything more than a piece of meat to him. I'm not even sure he finds me attractive legitimately. Maybe I'm just…nice to…”
Lovey shook her head. “Matt's not the commitment kind but he doesn't go for anyone he doesn't find attractive.”
“I don't look like any of these women. Hell, I'm not even a woman.”
“I don't think that matters. You have the parts for the job.”
Mike scoffed.
“I just meant Matt finds you attractive.”
“That's great. I like that feeling. I just wish I thought he could like me as a person.”
“I'm not sure how well he knows any of us as people.”
“He should get to know you better. I think he'd like you. I know I do.”
Lovey smiled. “Thanks.”
“Every time we're close, my head spins. I try to act just as confident as he does, just as carefree about the whole thing. That's not how I feel though. I'm just afraid of coming off awkward or anxious. I'm afraid of him not wanting to deal with me anymore. I'm replaceable.”
They sighed. “And look at what beautiful women are into him. Look at you.”
Lovey adjusted her glasses. She rarely wore them in front of Matt.
Mike stared at her for a minute. She really was remarkably beautiful. “If I had my pick between me and you, I'd definitely pick you.”
Lovey smiled. “Thank you but Mr. Helm and I have a strictly business relationship.”
Mike laughed. “You call that business?”
She shrugged. “It comes with the job.”
“Was it in the description?” Mike asked, then added like an announcer: “Needed: A secretary for one, Matt Helm, must be able to type 100 words a minute and write and speak fluent English. Must be down to fuck. Pretty is a plus.”
Lovey giggled. “No. It was an agreement we came to.”
“Does everyone get into agreements with Matt?”
Lovey thought this over. “No, just you and me.”
“Really?”
She nodded. “Everyone else is one and done really. Matt doesn't like getting attached.”
“I know, that's why all of this is stupid.” Mike sighed. “I don't know why I'm telling you. We're not even- are we friends?”
“We could be,” Lovey said, and smiled. “I like you.”
“What a weird way to make a friend.”
“It's as good a way as any.”
Mike shrugged. “I guess so. I don't have a lot of friends. Well, except Olivia, who is why I'm in this mess.”
“Olivia from the June edition of Slaygirl? Third page?”
Mike scratched their head. “Yeah…? Brunette, green eyes, the most beautiful aquiline nose?”
Lovey nodded.
“I don't read Slaygirl,” Mike said.
“Neither do I,” Lovey said. “I write down all of Mr. Helm’s photoshoots.”
“That makes sense.”
Mike laughed to themselves, then said. “If you want an example of a real 'strictly business’ relationship, you should see Olivia. She turned Matt down flat. He almost looked embarrassed. Sometimes I think he turned his sights toward me to soften the blow.”
“Strong girl.”
“Engaged,” Mike said.
Lovey’s eyes widened. “Does her fiance know?”
Mike nodded. “He trusts her completely. And anyway, they’re just photos.”
“A lot of men would've made her quit.”
“A lot of men are insecure,” Mike quipped.
Lovey agreed silently.
“Thanks for the talk. I still don't know what to do about Matt.”
“I wish I could help.”
Mike sighed. “I'm not asking for much. I don't need exclusivity. I just want to have a real date.”
“Then ask him,” Lovey said.
“I guess I could. It shouldn't be too hard, right?”
“Good luck,” Lovey said sincerely.
“Thanks.”
With that, Mike headed out the door.

It's all "links meet aus" and "zeldas meet aus", but where's my "companions meet aus"?
I wanna see midna bash fi and navis heads together for annoying her
I mean can you imagine the sheer chaos of all the Zelda companions meeting and going on a journey together? They're all companions/guides! One of thems a talking hat for hylias sake how are they supposed to take initiative?
I think it'd be like Lu where they all just meet up, but can you imagine the chain just somehow finds out this happened (and twilight is just like guys I am so sorry about midna) (but they're also really oddly touched that all their friends met each other too)
Pretty sure midna would be the sort of leader, since the last time she was in a foreign world she just found the nearest dude and started ordering him around. By like halfway through twilight princess she was literally asking LINK to accompany her to get what she needed.
But like. 90% of the group would be fairies. Which can't heal. One is a talking hat who just needs a head? He can't go on midnas cause she throws him off with her magic hair, poor ezlo is just trying to keep up.
They also have these weird green shadows who come around? They don't talk, but there's a rock, a fish, a bird, and a lady who just appear and stab things and shoot wind water fire and lightning.
Also midnas really confused why wolf link just shows up and kills things every now and then (from botw amibo)
Fi is the one who can talk to Hylia and awaken memories and get guidance and information or whatever, but she only does this by ballerina dancing and the others are always pissed at her anyways "WE DONT KNOW WHAT BATTERIES ARE OR A WII REMOTE WILL YOU PLEASE GO BACK IN SWORD FORM ALREADY" "I detect there is a 90% chance you need a key to open this door" "wow. Your perception is unparalleled fi."
Also there's a boat. A boat. Who is also good at taking charging since he's a king, which causes some friction between him and midna, since she has to grab him by her hair to move him half the time.
And with the fairies. Again. They all offer advice mainly. And with the fairies a lot of their main role is speaking and getting attention and pitching in? They come on an intersection and there's a chorus of bells all shouting the same directions. Ezlo is trying to cover the kings ears from his place on the boats head
Also there's this ghost/spirit of Zelda that everyone just feels REALLY strong loyalty to. But she's just like this kid who wants her body back?! They try to protect her but she can turn into a purple knight and stab things so there's that. I think there's also some animal companions from ooa/oos so.
Side quests are nonexistent they don't care about a village or gathering frogs for a kid they are there to save the world on a mission linear plot it is
And it's interesting because you have so many of them who just vanish and then appear to give loud advice. All at once. And the fighting skills basically fall to those weird green shadows that shoot various elements and fight and randomly disappear. Midna and spirit Zelda can fight, and Fi can too (kind of like how she fights as a sword in hyrule warriors). Also up to you if midna is drop dead gorgeous or devilish imp.
By the end they find whatever enemy so they can go back and midna is so pissed by this point that she hears the word "batteries" from Fi and goes full on fused shadow and just obliterates the jerk
***I have not played all the games so do not know or understand all of the companions and probably got some stuff wrong
Bonus: there is a child in a village named Link who does not have the spirit of the hero. He is stalked for three days until Fi decides his vibes are off and they all stop telling him he's the chosen one

WIP FRIDAY
I apologize for getting this out two days late, I’ve been busy with lots of packing and events! But I have a little reprieve, so I wanted to post another WIP; this one is from Heart Full, Bowl Empty.
BE AWARE THAT THIS SEGMENT INVOLVES A CONVERSATION REVOLVING AROUND UNWILLING BUT INTENTIONAL STARVATION. I know there are people who say they can’t read this fic because of themes like this, so be aware of this before reading this WIP!!
I included this snippet in today’s WIP because I have like three versions of the entire segment this snippet is from. I feel like it’s a really important segment with a really important conversation, and I’ve had a hard time balancing all the emotions the way I want to between Ingo and Akari, with frustration, sadness, anger, and empathy, to realistically get them to the resolution I want at the end of it.
The final version will probably only include a few parts from this particular segment.
Enjoy!!
—————
“I knew it! You’re doing it again!” Akari’s eyebrows scrunched, trying to understand through the frustration. “You said you wouldn’t!”
“Circumstances will improve soon.” Clearly done with the conversation, that was all Ingo said, but it was confession enough that he had fallen back on his word. Shame contaminated his voice, but if there was any regret, he hid it well.
“No, it won’t!” They were not even half-way through winter yet. “And you know it won’t!”
Ingo said nothing as the kits carefully moved around his slumped form, finding comfortable places to settle around him. She didn’t know if he intended to snuff the conversation out with angered silence, or if he was just too exhausted to care about arguing with her anymore. If it wasn’t for his small occasional signs of movement or acknowledgement, she’d think he was actually sleeping.
Akari carefully stepped into the nesting layers, moving to sit down next to Ingo. She settled with her back against the cavern wall, pulling her knees close as a few kits shuffled around to accommodate her. “You know I’m right.”
Huffing out an irritated sigh and nothing more, it didn’t seem like Ingo had any intentions to engage with her argument anymore.
“You couldn’t even pull yourself up over the ridge,” She prodded at him again, trying to motivate more conversation out of him. “I had to help you!”
“There are many, many factors that go into that.” A reluctant answer, perhaps a reflexive attempt to quell her worry; Ingo feebly rubbed his wrapped hand, almost as a display for his excuse.
“I’ve seen you do more when you’ve been hurt worse.” Akari retorted, a little softer now but still cold.
Ingo’s eyes remained closed, though his hardened expression implied that it came across as more accusatory than she’d intended. But perhaps it was precisely the time to be accusatory.
“Ingo, you’re so tired all the time now – you stopped coming to the training grounds because you just can’t make the trips all the time anymore! And you’re sleeping so much more than you used to, and it’s like you’re always hungry all the time, even though all I see you doing anymore is gathering food!” Akari’s voice grew more jagged as she continued to jab at him, entirely uninterrupted.
It was getting difficult. With Ingo’s tunic still sopping by the bucket, still somewhat red from the exhausted effort of washing out the blood, it could not hide the ribs that pressed out just a little bit more, or help fill out what the waistline had lost under the loosening belt. The abject dread of directly acknowledging that was too much.
“And- and look! You aren’t even willing to hold a conversation with me anymore, and I don’t know if it’s because you just won’t, or because you can’t!” The kits shifted uncomfortably as Akari retreated back into her own frustration instead. “People think you’re sick, Ingo! They’re asking me about you! What are you doing?”
The exhausted man remained where he laid in the nesting material, only moving his hands to rub at his face and sigh — a deep, forced sigh that swelled his side before releasing. Akari almost didn’t think he’d answer her, but with some effort, he propped himself up first onto his elbows, then slumped forward. The teen watched him run shaky fingers through his hair as he sat next to her.
“…I don’t know what I should do.” The guilt. The weary guilt cracked his voice and tore Akari’s anger down to heartache.

thinking about miles murphy and niles sparks celebrating new years together.
niles riding his bike to miles’ house that evening, judy murphy insisting he have dinner with them. she makes one of niles’ favorite meals because she knows he’d be coming over and she goddamn loves this boy, and niles damn near cries over it. this is the first new years niles can remember that he’s spent doing anything other than sitting by himself in his room with his nose in a book, avoiding the annual new years party his parents always have going downstairs. (it was never as if he was banished to his room or anything, of course. niles has always been free to join everyone downstairs if he pleases. it’s just that it’s always loud and there’s always too many people and he barely knows any of them and no one there is anywhere near his age and there’s a certain awkwardness to being the only kid at a party for adults, and. just less overwhelming to keep to himself.)
judy has to leave because she works odd hours as a nurse, and as disappointed as she is that she couldn’t get the rest of the night off to spend with her son, she’s equally glad that miles won’t be spending the night by himself. miles has niles. she leaves them with matching hair ruffles and a pack of sparklers and a “be careful, i mean it, call me right away if anything happens, love you”.
miles and niles leave with an hour ‘til midnight, ride their bikes side-by-side through the dark, reach the top of the hill that holds their carefully selected firework watching spot (they’d spent the previous couple of days scouting out potential spots and choosing between those for the best possible view) with twenty minutes to spare. niles slings off his backpack and pulls out a bottle of faux-alcoholic sparkling apple juice. miles has never had sparkling apple juice before. they drink it from paper cups. miles decides he does not like sparkling apple juice. niles likes it even though it tastes like shit.
they pull out their sparklers, prepare to light them up as soon as the clock hits midnight. this is a tradition miles has held with his mom for many years. he’s glad to have a second person to share this with. he’s glad that that person is niles. niles starts whispering the countdown in time with his watch, and miles’ practiced hands light his own sparkler with ease as they shout the final seconds. niles fumbles with the lighter, can’t get the stupid stick to work right, so miles puts his hand over his friend’s to guide the lighter. niles finds himself getting distracted by the way the sparks look reflected in miles’ eyes, almost loses count. his own sparkler catches right as they yell ZERO!! and, oh, they both feel so alive. fireworks go off all around them in brilliant bursts of color and sound, and they’re waving their sparklers high in mimicry, and their breath clouds in the cold air, and this is the best new years eve that niles sparks has ever had. this is the best year he’s ever had. and that’s all because of miles.
they—niles and miles, both—look forward to annual repeats of old traditions, to starting new ones. to more years together, and more ends of years together, and more togetherness in general. it’s the best new years eve either of them have ever had.
