I got an ask about fanfiction and ChatGPT, and I wanted to say something here directly because this does seem important. None of this is a criticism of anyone, because I know how very difficult this topic is.
First, I absolutely see how tempting ChatGPT and other machine-learning engines are to use. But please, please be aware that you're plagiarizing other writers if you use them. These machines are designed to scrape huge amounts of text and form apparently coherent sentences out of them, but they are not your sentences—they're words and images that other people have crafted, that have been jammed together by a machine without thought or emotion. This sort of thing makes me want to stop writing fanfiction altogether, just because it's depressing to think that the things I work on are just going to be repurposed by someone else (often without realizing it) and sold as their own. Anything produced by ChatGPT does not belong to you.
Second, fanfiction and writing in general is about connecting yourself with characters and characters with your readers. It's an emotional connection, a connection between human beings via fiction. It is absolutely an exercise in trust as well, because you're asking your reader to trust you with characters they love, and your reader is asking to be trusted with your words. It's art—yeah, fanfiction is art—and you want your art to be yours. If it's flawed and weird, all the better. It belongs to you.
I'm an editor by profession. I love writing and I love writers. If anyone wants advice (whatever I can give—I'm not gonna say I'm the end-all authority on anything) about how to build effective scenes or characterizations (yeah, including smut—I worked as an editor of romance/erotica for the first years of my career, there's literally nothing that I can be embarrassed by), please do not hesitate to send me an ask or a message. I won't edit your work (sorry, I gotta be paid for that), but I can provide resources and suggestions for how to form those connections with your reader effectively.
Don't resort to ChatGPT.

god imagine logging on one day and learning:
the amv you made for a relatively niche ship a couple years ago has gotten a huge spike in views out of nowhere
a massive youtuber apparently stole it to put in his video essay because he just couldn't be bothered to watch the actual show???
the only reason people know about this is because some guy dedicated half of a 4-hour long video essay to calling the guy out for never having an original idea in his life.
like genuinely. how do you even begin to react to that
Edit: I am not the op of the amv!!! That is someone else!!! Please don’t spread misinformation!!!
Actual op’s (who is not me) reaction to this:

online harassment campaigns are genuinely terrifying and part of why they're terrifying is that they make you feel like you're going insane—especially if they're false, frame you maliciously on purpose or blow things wayy out of proportion—because like. asides from it feeling really fucking bad due to the aforementioned tide of toxic sludge coming your way all at once, you genuinely start to doubt your perception of reality because surely this isn't... right? surely people can tell this isn't real/there's no way this kind of reaction is warranted or deserved, right?
if any of your friends ever go through that the single most helpful thing you can do is reach out to them & be like "jesus christ these people are nuts, are you okay?" PLEASE do, even privately if you're afraid of being dragged in. they'll never thank you enough, it's a literal life raft for their sanity

i wanted to make this poll because as a gifmaker, i'm perplexed at the way the like reblog ratio on this site has gone down significantly in the past few years and i'm really interested in getting some insight as to why that happened.
*just to clarify, this poll doesn't apply to mutuals' personal posts, tag games, or responses to asks you sent to people!! it's about creative posts like fics, gifs, art, fan videos, etc etc.

Imagine, for a moment, that your internet just stopped loading images one day. Your dash might look pretty different (and less usable), but at least you can still make posts — whether about your internet situation, or about completely unrelated topics.
Then, imagine that one or more of your posts blew up, to the tune of hundreds if not thousands of notes. Imagine people started adding images to your posts.
Imagine your post circulating almost entirely in the form with four or five images attached, and with everyone in the notes laughing about those images — except you, who started the post in the first place, who can't even see those images because you're trapped in Tumblr's loading gradient hellscape.
You're excluded from any further conversations on your own post, because someone added a mystery image with the caption "don't leave this in the tags," but you have no idea which set of tags it is, and can't tell if it's one of the good takes from the tags or one of the horrible takes from the tags. You're excluded from the Tumblr users playing with JPEGs like dolls. You can try to guess the contents of the images based on people's reactions, but it's hard. And no one adding images even seems to notice the irony.
This is, of course, a real problem plaguing Tumblr users with regularly slow internet. And it's also a huge, insidious problem plaguing blind and low vision people who rely on either screen readers, or image descriptions in combination with enlarged text on their device.
People with disabilities around comprehending images, people who have images (or gifs) disabled due to photosensitivity, and many others are also affected.
If you add an image to a post without either alt text, an in-post image description, or even both for maximal inclusivity, you don't know if OP — or the person whose tags you're peer reviewing, or whose reply you're screenshotting — will actually be able to see it. From their perspective, you might just be shoving a mystery rectangle in their face, expecting them to be able to guess — or responding to them without them being able to know.
Imagine being on the receiving end of that expectation constantly. Imagine how isolating that must feel.
We need, collectively, to stop making assumptions that everyone we interact with online will be able to access, physically see, and mentally process images. The assumption that disabled people are vanishingly rare and statistically shouldn't really need to be considered is an assumption of structural and/or implicit ableism.
Write image descriptions. Write image descriptions for every image you post, if you're able — but if you have limited energy, or you're still learning, you should at least start trying your absolute best to describe images you add to other people's posts. If you're starting a conversation, even an online conversation, you should make your best effort to be accessible.
So: Write IDs, especially if they're as simple as just text, like screenshotted tags (link to guide). Write IDs even if you think the best ID you can write is too short, or too incomplete (link to post explaining why even "bad" IDs help).
Write IDs in general (link to a huge compilation of guides). Challenge ableist assumptions and inaccessibility.

@gontagokuhara-week Day 1 - protector / gentleman
V3-4's tricky for me to talk about for one or two reasons, but one thing I can say is that Gonta intentionally throwing away his dream of being a gentleman - something he ties everything about himself around - in order to protect everyone from the truth... to me that's one of the most underrated yet coolest things in V3.
It's still technically his birthday where I am, but this feels a smidge dark for that, so there's a more celebratory birthday variant of this on my twitter!
(I can only do a bit of Gonta Gokuhara Week, but I should hopefully have some stuff for the last two or three days ^^)

So let’s go through this one-by-one, shall we?
Red Guy
Tumblr media
Flat affect in voice, not very expressive
Tumblr media
Or from the perspective of other Red Guy, he is far too expressive and tend to smile at inappropriate situations
Tumblr media
Express emotions either ‘too little’ or ‘too much’ in terms of volume, very little in-between
Speaks very bluntly
Feels physically uncomfortable with bright colors
"Well, this isn't that fun, is it? can't make out where I am in the room like this. What if I'm standing in an embarrassing area?" "I actually don't mind it. Kind of a nice break from all of those... garish colors"
Duck
Tumblr media
Loves cataloging and organizing things as a recreational activity
Tumblr media
Anthropomorphise inanimate objects (like ACTUALLY inanimate, not teachers)
"You have to jab it hard or it won't respect your choices!"
Has a hard time fitting in in ‘normative’ social groups
Tumblr media
Odd sensory sensitivities
"You're supposed to say that the floor is too loud or the window is disrespecting you"
Yellow Guy
Tumblr media
Relies on a heavy amount of social mimicry in unfamiliar social situations
"I'm making bits and parts, although sometimes I feel a bit like the bits and parts are, eh, making me."
Tends to understand metaphors and turns of phrases very literally
Which is actually a trait that he displays even in his hyper-intelligent ‘Charged’ mode
"Oh there he is, it's about time." "Yeah, what have you been doing?" "Um, okay, let me see... We were learning about electricity... I completed a crossword puzzle..."
Who is also very sensitive to sounds when two or more people are speaking at once
Tumblr media
He also seems to have ‘clumsy’ motor functions in both ‘forms’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In conclusion:

Another thing about callout posts you should keep in mind: screenshots of social media are trivially easy to fake, with image editing and other means, for reasons that are all too obvious. A jpg of a social media post is not proof at all.
So like, the next time you see a callout post of a trans woman accusing her of being a pedo and a screenshot of a discord convo as proof, be more skeptical of both the accusation and the supposed proof. Like callout posts are 50% unsubstantiated rumor mongering and 50% jpgs of supposedly real social media posts, it's why I never take them seriously.

butches are the silliest of the silly geese.. you can tell them repeatedly you have a crush on them, call them petnames and compliment them constantly, spam message them, and even say Yes to going on a date with them, and they'll still ask if you're Sure
