Fun/Interesting details in Expiration Date

Heavy knows that Pauling is calling them, and lets Scout be the one to answer. Also, road safety because he’s not distracted driving.

Medic is so hyped about tumor bread.

Hoovy smelling the sandwich and deciding it’s safe to eat [or that it doesn’t matter at this point].

Pyro standing like that. He don’t know what’s going on, but he’ll still be polite. Also, Sniper just chillin in the back with a poker face the whole time.

Medic smiles at Soldier as they walk past. Engineer’s got that Conhager death-cheating focus at the moment.

Spy’s eyes widen angrily when he realizes it’s Scout at the door and then he smirks like; “Oh hi! Twelve hours was enough time for you to get bored of my absence, then?”, not expecting a sincere apology [maybe one orchestrated by the other teammates, but not Scout].

There was some vitriol behind that “***”, look at his nose. He does not want Scout to gloat, try to prank him again, or give a fake apology. And that’s valid, since the team dying is something Scout should have taken seriously, and the last wishes handled with respect. He crossed a line that Spy doesn’t take lightly.

Dad, I threwed up. But in all seriousness, that’s the “My family is dysfunctional, and I don’t know how to be emotionally honest with people” posture.

He didn’t say “You’re terrible with girls” in a snide or smug tone, he said it with like actual parental concern. “Scout, no you have three days! Do you want to die rejected or die before you can enjoy being together? No. Don’t do this to yourself.”

Look at that cup, he did not need a refill. This fake smirk and disinterest is Spy’s way of checking how serious Scout is about this last wish and taking his advice. And when he goes “This never leaves this room” Spy perks up.

Medic was taking a sample of bread tumor puss [or injecting it with something].

They have a whole entire wrestling ring, how did I never notice that?

This is one of those multiple choice questions where you can choose more than one answer and have it be right. But the chicken in combination with the other options looses you points, and just taking the chicken is like the token wrong answer.

Spy sighs when he realizes Scout chose just the chicken. Like chile, I gave you multiple options and you still went with your go-to that doesn’t work!

This room has a gym floor, which implies Spy took a bunch of fancy stuff from one of his rooms just for this date training. Also shoutout to the other teammates for helping with this.

Okay, so most of these decorations came from Pyro, who Scout is terrified of. Archimedes came from Medic, who Scout also doesn’t want to make angry, and the grass cutouts are potentially part of the base camouflage. But that disco ball? That belongs to Scout, he just doesn't want anyone to know he’s real into that. [The team would not judge, but his brothers would, so.]

Man when he gets his heart broken, I hope he finds the right girl for him. He deserves better than Pauling always making excuses to turn him down instead of telling him like it is.

TF2 ships and i think have chemistry and why

(note : i don't personally ship any of the mercs together, except maybe heavy and medic)

Heavy + Medic

a classic! needs no explanation. they're besties, your honor. they work well in battle, and they mesh well outside of it, so they'd obviously make a good couple.

Medic + Scout

for this one, i feel like scout would physically appeal to medic since he's the youngest and also very fit and in quite good health. subsequently, scout would get some fucked up sexual awakenings from medic's "inspections"

Scout + Sniper

lively young spud full of energy + scrungly sad wet cat of a man dynamic i find very cute. also the interesting dynamic between scout's submissiveness and easy bashfulness despite a tough exterior, and sniper's predatory nature and dominance despite a quiet exterior.

Demoman + Soldier

this one also needs little explanation. this applies to specifically red + blu. they were canonical best friends, could very well be somethin more.

Medic + Engineer

these two do some pretty cool stuff when they put their smart little heads together, shown extensively in expiration date. all that time spent alone together in a lab could get a little devious.. engineer also seems to have a habit of lobbing his own limbs off without much thought, so medic is required.

Spy + Sniper

classic enemies to lovers. they're natural rivals in gameplay, so it'd be real silly if they were a couple in non-gameplay. they share a very quiet and reserved nature i think they'd like in each other.

Pyro + Engineer

this "ship" i see as more platonic. the other mercs really fear pyro and avoid them mostly, while engineer's gentle nature allows him to show kindness to them. this, in turn, lets pyro show their sweetness to him freely and have it reciprocated.

random tf2 thought but I am once again wishing we got that expiration date show even if just so that we could see more of the merc’s real personalities. Like that video of Spy’s Rally that ended up being cut from meet the spy - that shit is FIRE. And it really is in line with the comics and expiration date in portraying Spy as a sort of charismatic speaker/team leader who can in fact comprehend working in a group.

In the games we mainly see a very adrenaline-fueled, hostile side of the mercs where they’re just screaming at the enemy team in the middle of battle But like. Spy’s speeches are fire, y’know? I wanna see more team leader Spy. I wanna see more artist Scout. I wanna see more family-oriented Heavy. I wanna see more daddy issues Engineer. Gimme.

This is going to be disorganized as hell because I’m . You know but anyway

I was thinking and you know. I wonder if Spy ever almost accidentally slips up and calls Scout “son”, since they both start with S and calling him son would be natural to him, since that’s what he’s likely called him for a long time, besides his real name. I also wonder how Spy felt when he joined the team and realized his child was there. Or if maybe he orchestrated it purposefully so that he’d be able to reconnect with him. Because his “insults” for the domination lines are.. they seem personal to me, like something a father would playfully tease their kid about. Especially “Hm… maybe I’ll ask Ms. Pauling out”. Obviously he wouldn’t, he’s just saying that to piss Scout off. Which. I think that’s so…. I don’t know it’s cute but it shatters my heart into a million pieces. Spy so obviously loves him and always has he’s just. Fucked up. All of them are. Scout cares for Spy too, I think. It’s why I think he actually harasses him so much, especially during expiration date he takes the time to draw things. Which we only ever see him do in that video. And then when he goes back to apologize genuinely and ask for advice.

TF2 Scout x Reader - Headcannons of Scout Crushing On You (Romantic)

He's very awkward about his crush on you like there are better ways to go about it but he just doesn't know how real dating works since he really only has hook-ups now and not actual romantic relationships with people.

Probably developes his crush on you when trying to jokingly flirt with you.

Starts off very strong and would continue to flirt with you to see your reaction until he realised that no, what he is feeling is not normal for him.

Would unironically try to serenade you with fucking Sexbomb.

Flustered every time you're around him and his blush is very noticeable.

Is very against asking Spy to help him out and would really only ask if he was on a timeframe like we see in Expiration Date. He would not be above asking Engineer for help though.

He'd give you things but instead of just saying they're from him he leaves an ominous note next to it saying that it's from your secret admirer.

He's relatively new to the serious love game and just pulls from his experience of "love" from highschool when he was with a new partner every other week.

Instead of trying to distance himself, he'd always try to be as close to you as possible because it makes him feel happy to know that you're there.

Acts like your typical school girl and makes up scenarios of the two of you in his head to pass the time.

Thinks that he isn't good enough for you all the time which brings his self esteem down to the point where you're gonna have to ask him out which he would greatly appreciate :)

Thinking yet again about the untapped snupin potential of that time when Remus went spying among the werewolves. Ok, we know that Death Eaters and werewolves don't mingle that much - Voldemort doesn't even seem to have any real use for them, except maybe Greyback in the role of muscle/bogeyman. And Lupin, despite going no-contact for a bit, has enough freedom to go to the Burrow for Christmas so mayyyybe we don't need to have Snape risk it all, go to the werewolves with some excuse, and sneak Lupin a bit of Wolfsbane Potion. But still, I just love the possible dynamic of the newbie spy in a nightmarish situation + the hardened spy with a bit too much on his plate. We also have all the angst of the relationship having an expiration date already set thanks to Dumbledore's necessary death.

Miss Pauling from Team Fortress 2 is confirmed to be a lesbian! A lot of people still don't believe it though so today I'm gonna show you guys all the information about it because I think it's cool :]

Cw: nudity (from Zhanna and Soldier in the TF2 comics, as well as Scout's mom in Meet the Spy (you'll see why that's important). Its not graphic but I thought to give a warning anyway just in case.)

The most direct acknowledgement of this is the fact Jay Pinkerton, a writer at Valve, said it in response to a comment on Pauling and Scout, saying Jay had a better idea for her, which was to make her a lesbian, but there were no female characters to ship her with yet.

Now you may ask "What about Scout? Didn't she date him?" After Expiration Date they may have gone on a "date" (date being Scout going on random jobs Miss Pauling has), but you can see in the comics that take place afterwards, they were never actually romantically involved.

It also comes off that way in Miss Pauling's voice lines towards Scout. (These are taken from the official TF2 wiki)

"Hey Scout. First, 'No' to whatever you're about to ask. I've got a job for you."

"Scout, Pauling here. Wrap up whatever you were bragging about and look at this."

"Scout, it's Pauling. Whatever stupid thing you're doing, stop it. I've got work."

"Scout, it's Pauling. I need something done quietly. Scout? Quietly."

"Engie, it's Pauling. Is Scout there? Cough if he's there. I've got a job for you. Not him."

Then there's the Teufort Reader, a page on the official TF2 website. It has ad listings from different characters. Both Pauling and Scout have listings for dates, but Scout enforces that the caller should be a woman while Pauling keeps who she is looking for genderless, meaning it doesn't necessarily have to be a man who calls. (I edited both listings onto an image, so that's why it's wonky looking lol.)

More examples (which is mostly my interpretation) of her possibly seeking future female partners (and ignoring male advances) is in her Tough Break voicelines. In some, she talks about going to many woman events which could be a hint at her sexuality, others she rejects male related stuff. Once again I copied these from the official TF2 wiki.

(whispering) "Hey, it's Pauling here. I'm at the Teufort Ladies Book Club and I'm the only one who hasn't actually read Belinda...so it's just about relationships, right? Guy meets girl, love stuff, happy ending? It's a good thing, right? I'm gonna tell everyone how it really, really brings the two as a couple."

[Scout: Oh, oh, and...(dice clatter)...not too shabby!] "Pauling here. I'm trying to teach Scout Gargoyles and Gravel. [Yeah!] Ugh, no Scout, there's no such thing as a Muscle Wizard." [Yeah whatever.] "No you can't beat an Orc by doing push-ups at it. Look, please, please put your shirt back on. Scout, stop flexing. Scout. Scout! Stop flexing."

"Hey did you know a gun show's a real thing? I'm at one with Heavy right now." [Heavy: Is perfect, this is gun.] Oh wow, what's the gauge on that? Yeah, Scout's been saying he's going to take me to one for years, but all he does is shove his stupid arms in my face. Anyway, I've got something for you."

"Hey's it's Pauling. Sorry for the noise, it's Ladies Night at the Cap Point, and I misunderstood what that meant." [Hey what's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?] "I'm trying to get someone killed for money. Can you give me a second? Sorry about that. Anyway, take a look."

"He-hey, sorry about the reception, I'm on a ladies safari in the middle of a forest. Listen, a contract came in..." [I'm being mauled to death by a tiger! Ahhh!] "Lady, would you please keep it down! I'm on the phone!"

Another small example, once again more of my interpretation, is on a TF2 blog post from the website where the Administrator starts reading one of Miss Pauling's gun themed woman magazines. The blog post says:

"I found the answer, in all places, in one of the insipid gun-themed women's magazines Miss Pauling leaves lying around, where I stumbled on an article about self-improvement."

You could tie this to a historical context because the 60s and 70s had a rise in LGBTQ oriented magazines, many lesbian ones created in 1971 and running through the 80s. It's quite possible that Pauling would read them as Team Fortress 2 takes place around 1968 to 1973.

The folder Miss Pauling has in the Gun Mettle update is labeled "Scout's mom" meaning she has the nsfw of Scout's mom that Spy lays out in Meet the Spy.

Next section goes more into the comics. There are many panels that could imply Pauling's growing liking towards her new teammate, Zhanna. In this first image I think it shows where the liking began, from Zhanna talking to Pauling, making her blush in the last frame (which too could be embarrassment, but someone pointed it out to me as a possibility, so I decided to add it).

Next is towards the end of the comics. Zhanna and Soldier fight naked, covered in honey as a fighting strategy, and Pauling and Scout have caught them doing so. Scout is disgusted and leaves, while Pauling is interested and decides to stay and catch up later. Note how Zhanna is closest to them. Panels are edited to be side by side and cropped a bit for image space.

Next is towards later on when Pauling is calling the Administrator and Zhanna wonders what she's doing. Pauling then confides in her with her problems, afterwards saying she sees Zhanna as part of the team now after Zhanna gives her advice. She's comfortable around Zhanna.

A few pages later, Pauling's disgusted by Soldier and him being naked, meaning he was not likely who she was looking at.

Another thing is that people think that Pauling could've developed a crush on the Administrator in their time together over the years Pauling worked for her. She made comments on how Helen (Administrator) was not so bad when you got to know her and we also learn Pauling had trusted her the whole mission without knowing what Helen's plan was. Pauling was blindly following and trying to stay loyal to what Helen wanted because she thought Helen would have a place for her at the end.

In Richter Overtime's video on the possible TF2 comic 7 leak from 2018, there was a scene where Pauling allegedly kisses the Administrator. This is in no way canon, but just in case it is revealed that something like that is in the final comic, I just think it would be good to note.

Ashly Burch, Miss Pauling's voice actress, came out as pansexual in July 2022, noting that she has played many LGBTQ characters.

(Also she was a writer on Expiration Date. This means Pauling not liking Scout due to being lesbian could've totally been intentional! Along with her playing as LGBTQ characters, she's also written for them! Like Life is Strange and Mythic Quest.).

The Romana version of the official TF2 wiki has most of these points on Pauling being gay on it. I copied down the text from that section, but recently I found that Pauling's Romana page was removed from the wiki.

"According to a tweet by Jay Pinkerton, writer of TF Comics, Miss Pauling is gay.

This may be why she insists the Administrator is 'not so bad when you get to know her'.

Part of a voice line added in the Tough Break update has her discuss an interest in Ladies' Night while fending off a man: 'Sorry for the noise, it's Ladies Night at the Cap Point, and I misunderstood what that meant.' [Hey what's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?] 'I'm trying to get someone killed for money.'

Another voice line excerpt from Tough Break, when she's at the Ladies' Book Club: '...so it's just about relationships, right? Guy meets girl, love stuff, happy ending? It's a good thing, right?'

No other Valve employee has either confirmed nor denied this claim to date (The tweet was made June 19, 2015), leading many to believe that Mr. Pinkerton's tweet was just a way to inflame the community. However, since Mr. Pinkerton is a lead writer of the comics and his word is trustworthy, there is no reason not to accept this at face value.

The tweet was made in response to a fan asking if Scout and Miss Pauling would become canon, and was preceded with Mr. Pinkerton stating he had "better plans" for her. This could imply that she may meet a love interest in an upcoming installment."

And finally, I'm taking this from someone else's post, but you can color-pick the lesbian flag colors off of one of Pauling's post cards!! (And bonus, you can color-pick the genderfluid flag off of her Halloween design!)

spy is very indirect about what she wants (see: expiration date and teaching scout how to flirt), heavy is very hesitant to go into any situation without feeling totally confident going into it

they spend months dancing around each other because theyre expecting the other to make the first move

... until their team has to stage an intervention for them because the yearning is physically painful to watch

their intended play styles are so different i love the idea of them looking out for each other by covering for each others weak points

setting up opportunities for one another (heavy making loud entrances for spy to sneak to the back lines, spy countering snipers countering heavy and heavy being able to take all sorts of damage a light class like spy couldnt and being able to put out the same damage back)

in enemy teams, imagine heavy turning a blind eye on spys antics (and "spy checking" with food) and spy sabotaging her own teammates

they look out for each other!

heavy in literature and spy being polyglot, they could have conversations that require multilayered translations to understand half of their jokes

heavys love language is acts of service, spys is physical touch . soo many ideas for this

The appeal of starting from the ending and working back is that you put a cap on every Might Have Been, every wandering tangent, etc. that your drafting mind might otherwise wind down. And there's nothing more irritating then having a good idea when wrapping something up only to realize you didn't have time to foreshadow it like you did the other 2 or 3 recurring consequences (TV writer woes).

Everything in the final conversation Abernathy has with Valentine has to be doing the work of two or three callbacks. Right now I've only hit the initial callbacks, and as I sketch out the ideas mentioned her in passing, which evoke certain strong emotions, then I know I need to do something with V's work involvement with Biotechnica, with some sort of clash with Jenkins, with what Valentine is like when she loses her temper. And I know that because it's what Abernathy is fixated on trying to control this breakup conversation, and also reveals what Abernathy herself is concerned about, and perhaps has been concerned about for a long time and never shown. (Or has she?)

Anyhow I love talking process, so this is the kind of skeleton script I'm going to be working backwards from. It will most certainly not survive exactly like this, but it's a good anchoring point:

(silently angry. is the implication that she’d do for him what she’d done for her? that she’s just a dangerous beast? that she knows her and her anger so well?)

“What do you want me to do? Beg for leniency? Make some emotional plea? You want me to ask if you ever even gave a shit about me? You want me to put on a show?” - “You wouldn’t believe a word I said anyway. Give me a cigarette.”

(hands one over, lights it. finally makes eye contact. this is real.) “Don’t look so glum. You wouldn’t have gotten half as far as you have without my help. You can cry into your bank account if you want, but it’s not like I’m kicking you out on the street.”

“Alright.” (inhale. peace. emptiness. drains her drink. drops the cigarette into abernathy’s.) “It’s done.”

Re-reading this I already know I need to work in some reference to Valentine's mother and some warning/advice/celebration they have near the end of this reverse story. Something that ties back to her own failed marriage and divorce and dashed expectations. Something about finding a reason to keep going on until you can't bear to any more. Something that echoes the familial stubbornness which means Valentine in the damn things overlap will endure anything so long as she knows the expiration date.

The most fascinating part of writing these two to me is that Abernathy has this very strict rule about never admitting guilt or regret directly, but she'll say something like "I'd apologize but it's already done, isn't it?" and it's like YOU COULD STILL SAY IT! But she sees that as weakness. And Valentine picks up that same attitude here "What do you want me to do? Beg for leniency? Make some emotional plea?" They're mocking each other for the very normal human desire for acknowledgement. They're intelligence agents who think they're just making sure they're not fooling themselves (they're fooling themselves). Sincerity is only useful for pre-empting someone else trying to expose your vulnerability.

Anyway, they're operating on a certain set of fucked up toxic social rules that are in some respects even harsher than the normal corpo set. They're self-policing, because Abernathy is obsessed with gaining favor with someone who is a misogynistic homophobe, and she's playing for keeps against people who aren't reviled by this person. The idea might also come up that she doesn't NEED to be doing it to this degree, but she's warped her own idea of what she needs to do, and what kind of person she needs to be, and applied that to Valentine as well. The tragedy is that they love each other. They work well together. It's never going to work out. It didn't work out. But look at what they had, and how fucked up and funny and exciting it all was before it went to shit.

What's more disturbing to me to be honest is that apparently over there in Korea they can't seem to explore what's outside their circle and everyone is setting everyone up with their besties. Yes, Korean culture is very exclusive they only really talk to people who they know or grew up with in school or the neighborhood. Or they worked some years together. They really don't talk to strangers or people they don't know. I remember that being the one complaint when Americans were first moving to Korea. That no one talks to you.

Jungkook is still young and he has a lot more different experiences than other Koreans who have never been outside of Korea. So he still has time to date outside of Korean. I don't understand how this is a disappointment. Yall want him to date outside of Korea so bad. Like what if he don't want yall. the gloves that sniper handed down to brawler still have the scent of piss. he’s tried multiple times to wash it out but the smell still lingers. he just covers it up with their air freshener.

the reason why he hates pyro (the feelings not mutual) is because he, obviously, burnt his arms. of course, pyro didn’t know that because of his case of schizophrenia.

brawler likes talking to sniper the most, as he is his father figure to him. sometimes he even joins him up there during rounds so sniper can teach him how to snipe. if sniper is talking to someone else however, his next go-to person would be heavy or medic, or both if they’re in the room.

he also likes talking to sober demoman, spy and engineer. he still likes soldier cause he’s very playful and silly, but he doesn’t really trust him after the “expiration date” incident.

he attempts to stay away from scout because, girl or not, he tries to flirt with him. brawler doesn’t think he took into account what being trans meant, maybe he just thinks his pronouns are different, that’s all. but if he does, brawler would be convinced that he’s bisexual.

when spy found out about the brawler transitioning, he went out and bought a few things that boys like and gave them to him. he told him if he doesn’t like any of it, hand it to scout. brawler is still very grateful.

soldier doesn’t really know what being trans is. he doesn’t NOT support him, but from time to time he accidentally refers to the brawler with she/her pronouns. engie has to explain to him what being trans is over and over again, but soldier doesn’t really pay attention.
