I decided to get a head start on the Fall collections because October is always such a busy month. I want to make sure everyone has their formulas in time for All Hallow’s Eve. The Poisoner’s Collections have been really popular and lots of fun to make! I just started the pre order for the fall collections which will be mystery box style and include 3 full-size formulas/items from the apothecary and 3 brand new Poison Path formulas based on the theme of the Feast of the Dead. I am doing a limited run of these and the new formulas will be retired to the recipe book once they are gone. Pre order via link in bio 🎃 #samhain #witchcraft #halloweenwitch #plantspiritally #plantspiritfamiliar #familiarspirit #plantspiritmedicine #masterplantspirit #banefulherbs #veneficium #pharmakon #datura #thornapple #poisonhemlock #belladonna #deadlynightshade #atropabelladonna #daturastramonium #coniummacukatum #witchingherbs #ethnobotanicals https://www.instagram.com/p/CgmvTnLLWjx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

That moment when you're studying a new (to me - magically at least) plant (Morning glory) and your partner points out one of them in your neighbors yard and you are ....
oooooh...that's not Morning glory! That's datura!
And your partner is looking at you blankly because they aren't obsessed with poisonous plants.
Also, I was so worried about growing poisonous plants in my neighborhood but people are already doing it so...?!?

Quote
In spite of being so dangerous, thornapple preparations were frequently used in love-philtres. They were, as an indignant German writer expressed it, "a tool of brothel-keepers, wicked seducers of girls, depraved courtesans and shameless lechers" when it was a case of making the victims lose their powers of resistance and become, against their will, sexually aroused, perhaps with subsequent loss of consciousness.  It was this kind of abuse that gained the plant the name 'love-will'. It was also called 'sorcerer's herb'. The name was apt, for the thornapple was among the herbs used by witches when they prepared their flying ointments.

This was actually the second set I drew after the Destiny Trio, but held off posting as I wanted to post the ‘official’ trios first. I had a hard time choosing flowers for the Lost Trio; Repliku especially and I don’t believe  the choices I made for him reflect him as much as Vanitas’ and Namine’s flower selection did, but I did my best with what I researched and found.
The Lost Trio’s extra flower theme is ‘surrounded’.
Foretellers and Flowers
Destiny Trio
Seasalt Trio
Wayfinder Trio
All flowers and meanings are under the cut:
Vanitas: Thorns,Petunias, Black Rose
Thorns are undoubtedly representative of suffering and pain. Vanitas both utilizes his own pain and suffering- in the form of his unversed in order to cause others pain aswell. The petunias growing from the thorns (literally growing from the pain), although pretty and delicate looking connote anger and resentment. On the flip side they also symbolize longing or desire, as Vanitas wishes to form the X-blade with Ventus. The rose, being a dead looking black colour has the obvious symbolism of death.true black roses are almost always never created naturally- much like how Vanitas’ ‘birth’ was unnatural. Having some red colouration within the petals of the rose however, symbolizes rebirth.
—————-
Namine: Witch Hazel, Rainflower, Mushroom (White button)
With a name such as ‘Witch Hazel’ the connection to Namine is obvious. Witch Hazel represents mysticism and witchcraft, but it can also mean protection. While not the strongest, Namine does her best to protect and help Roxas and Kairi in Kingdom Hearts 2 and sends ‘someone’ to protect Sora and friends at the end of Kingdom Hearts 3. Rainflower, while not common can mean forgiveness and atonement, with it also having a secondary meaning of ‘To never forget’. Mushrooms are the last thing you’d think about when you think about flowers, flower arrangement or floristry in general. However they do have a meaning; Loneliness and self-doubt, emotions that Namine unfortunately knows all too well.
—————-
Riku Replica/Repliku: Thornapple, Marigold, False Indigo
The thornapple flower looks elegant, pretty and delicate, however it, and the fruit it bares is highly poisonous to eat or even touch. Repliku started to fall into a horrid mindset when he was first created, so this flower represents that start in life. Marigolds represent a wide range of emotions, the reason I chose Marigolds for Repliku is that they can symbolize jealousy and despair, but also gaining friendship and respect, which reflects his arc from both Chain of Memories up to Kingdom Hearts 3.
The last flower I chose for Repliku was the False Indigo; mainly for its name as the only meaning I could find for it was ‘protection’- whilst Repliku does protect namine fiercely, there are a number of flowers I could choose that also mean ‘protection’. I chose the False Indigo because Repliku is also a ‘false Riku’ so to speak. False Indigos were also used to create dyes, and Repliku himself was used by the organization and callously tossed aside when his use was up.

My datura products are definitely the most popular, and that makes sense because datura is a powerful, versatile and ever changing plant spirit ally. There is a very shamanic and psychedelic side to datura, but it also has that dark and chthonic quality that we see in other nightshades. Datura also has more scopolamine than other nightshades, which is more absorbable transdermal than other tropane alkaloids. I love rubbing the salve in my feet and putting socks on and just sinking in. #datura #thornapple #daturasalve #witchsointment #flyingointment #veneficium #unguentumsabbati #witchcraft #ethnobotany #ethnobotanical #poisonpath #tricksterspirit #pharmakon #witchsgarden https://www.instagram.com/p/CRLHQfqLp7l/?utm_medium=tumblr

TITLE: 마술 (Witchcraft) ARTIST: 쏜애플 (THORNAPPLE) ALBUM: 계몽 (Enlightenment) - 2019
LYRICS (Korean + English):
여기 밑에 가라앉은 것들을 건져내어 별들을 낳을 테야
fishing out the things that have sunk here to the bottom i’ll give birth to stars
까먹은 이름과 열매 맺지 않는 풀 온종일 비가 내리는 하루
a name i’ve forgotten and grass that bears no fruit a day with rain all throughout
스쳐간 피부와 저녁에 옮았던 꿈 죄다 녹여서 휘저어야지
the skin that i brushed up against and the dream i caught like disease in the evening i’ll melt them all down and mix them together 기도를 외우자 밤이 커다래지게 새된 목소리로 짖어야지
let’s recite a prayer to make the night grow vast i’ll shriek in a shrill voice
부른 적 없는 손님은 기어코 문을 열고 들어오고 말 거야
a guest i never invited will eventually open the door and make their way inside 아끼는 옷을 찢고선 나를 매달아 발밑에다 불을 피우겠지
after tearing up the clothes i’d treasured they’ll hang me up and light a fire beneath my feet
어스름이 쌓이네 머리끝이 가려워 뿔이 돋아 나오네 돋아 나오네
the dusk piles up there’s an itching at the edge of my head horns grow out grow out 여기 밑에 가라앉은 것들을 건져내어 별들을 낳을 테야
fishing out the things that have sunk here to the bottom i’ll give birth to stars
비릿한* 낱말과 아무라도 았던 사람들이 비를 맞는 하루
a word that smells of blood* and a day where those who were happy to have anyone are rained upon
--
*비릿하다 = smell or taste fishy, or bloody

HSA Webinar: Shedding Light on the Solanaceae: An Exploration of Our Relationship with Nightshades
by Jen Munson, HSA Education Chair
The nightshade family of plants sounds ominous  – how could it not with the use of the words night and shade? The official name of this family is Solanaceae, and these plants are characterized by the shape of the flower, which in some cases feature near perfect pentagrams of petals, sepals, and stamens, and in others the petals are fused to form long tubes.
The Solanaceae features nearly 90 genera and 3,000 species, including some of humanity’s most important plants. You may be surprised to learn that many of our everyday foods fall in the nightshade family. These include hot and bell peppers, potatoes, eggplant, and tomatoes. To learn more, join HSA on April 13th at 1pm EDT when National Herb Garden gardener, Erin Holden, joins us for “Shedding Light on the Solanaceae: An Exploration of Our Relationship with Nightshades.”
Although many plants in this family are edible, others are recognized for their hallucinogenic properties, use in witchcraft, and/or some level of toxicity. The toxicity comes from the level of alkaloids the plant contains, and the effects of these alkaloids are what made them useful historically. For example, thornapple (Datura stramonium) was used by religions to aid in dreams and visions. More recognizable is the mandrake (Mandragora officinarum), which was highlighted in the Harry Potter series for its role in potion making. It is surmised that the high level of alkaloids evolved out of self-preservation to prevent being consumed by animals. During our April 13th program the deep relationship between humans and members of the Solanaceae family will be further explored, from their magical uses to their application as medicine, poison, and food.
Our webinars are free to members and $5.00 for guests. Become a member today and enjoy all our webinars for free. As a bonus, you will automatically be entered into a drawing for a free registration to our June 10-12th, 2021 Annual Meeting of Members and Educational Conference.  To register visit www.HerbSociety.org/hsa-learn/hsa-webinars/
