#tlh whispering room scene
Text
Hiya all - some tlh updates from a behind the scenes of one of Cassie's events!
Tatiana was the most interesting villain to write because she's such an example of a certain kind of bitterness where someone has had something bad happen to them and they ruin their life blaming it on other people
Her favorite Jordelia scene is The Whispering Room < 3
Mina will not have powers exactly like her older siblings and we will learn why in CoT
We will get to see Alastair use Cortana in CoT because apparently demons are attracted to it and try to weasel it from him lmfaoo (and yea Cordelia did leave Cortana with him)

Look I HOPE I'M WRONG, but I'm hella worried about Matthew's arc in ChoT and Alastair's Issues™ not being properly addressed on-page (Elias, bullying, Charles) and basically, yeah

okay i cant be the only one who desperately needs the whispering room scene from james pov i have to know what was going through his head i mean what was he thinking as he kissed her, as she kissed him, as he pulled away, as he kissed her again, as he took cortana off, as he took his jacket off, as she wrapped her legs around him, as he pulled away when matthew came in, with his calm and collected and ive done nothing attitude, like did he feel matthew coming through the parabatai bond, was he embarrassed about being walked in on, did he realized cordelia liked him too i just need to know
so @cassandraclare if youre not too busy and if you had ideas about what he was thinking through this, could you maybe write a post about it?

hi guys time for my daily anti cc vent
#so sick of all of her extra tidbits and alternate scenes being for her favoured couples.#we got whispering room from james pov - aka a scene we already had from one side of the couple that has 80% of tlh screen time already#but no paris alastair? no pantry anna?#no hint at what the fuck else happened in the sanctuary??#im beyond tired mostly bc my fave pairings never seem to line up with hers#we've had NO sizzy centric extras. she hates them and for what. even their engagement party was in clary's pov#we got one or two for will and tessa but none for anyone else. they were all jem and tessa#which has contributed to my jem mary sue crusade#(ik mary sue is an outdated term but he has no flaws girl help!!!)#she has her clace her jemma her jordelia and her malec so why give anyone else anything :/#you'll notice i did not mention any tda ships here. that was because tda continued to disappoint me.#also yes this is her series and her extra tidbits do not pay her rent i understand she can do what she wants#but she went on a twitter rampage abt how ungrateful her fans were for requesting certain scenes#(specificially paris alastair from what i saw)#and like. cmon. either actually give the extra tidbits ppl WANT or stop pretending u write them for us lol#it's ok to write things just for u!!!! u dont have to post it!!!#also she got mad at someone asking when the new kit (or ty idr) portrait would drop bc it was 'exactly what i'd been complaining abt'#um. u dont handle the fanart. someone draws that for u. it's not the same as ppl asking u to write a specific scene#just ignore it lol no need to set ur rabid stans on someone for asking a question

A summary of the Valentine’s Day live with Cassie
- We won’t be seeing the Whispering Room scene from James’ POV before end of March; Cassie said it may be better that we read it after Chain of Iron because we’ll learn much more about what James is thinking and feeling
- Valentine’s day: Matthew would go all out, James would make it very thought out and personal, Anna would make it fun, Alastair “never thought of giving anyone a valentine in his entire life so he’d have to work it out from first principles”, Thomas would prefer to do something together rather than give a gift, Christopher would forget
- Chain of Iron silhouettes are: Cordelia, Lucie, James, Matthew, Christopher, Thomas, Alastair, Grace, Jesse, Anna, Ariadne, with one of them being shared between two characters
- The events of “One must always be careful about books” take place during Chain of Iron
- “Matthew is always falling in love with people he can’t have, that’s his thing; and Alastair is always sabotaging himself” - when talking about complicated relationships in TLH
- The Chain of Iron scene Cassie is most excited for people to read: When Elias comes back, James has dinner with the Carstairs family, and Alastair does something unexpected then - this thing that Alastair does is what Cassie is excited for us to read and respond to; also several scenes with Cordelia she’s excited for us to read, and a big action scene where everyone is fighting together (including Anna and Christopher)
- About writing character interactions: Thomas and Alastair’s interactions are “goals”, but even Thomas and Anna interacting have a fun dynamic
- TLH is challenging because most characters have loving and stable families who are always interested in their whereabouts, which doesn’t help with sneaking around and fighting evil
- Cassie’s favourite spot in London is the Borough Market, which is also where the London Shadow Market is placed - there’s a big scene in ChoI where they all go to the Shadow Market
- Will probably lost most of his Welsh accent, having lived in London for so long
- ChoI ends with an emotional cliffhanger rather than a LoS-type cliffhanger
- Church is not around with Magnus in Chain of Iron, but maybe we’ll see him in Chain of Thorns
- Eugenia’s story shows the dangers of gossip, where someone says something about her that may not be true, which in turn ruins her reputation
- One thing James likes about Cordelia is that she likes him exactly the way he is; Cordelia values James’ kindness; “she thinks about the bits of him that she likes a lot in Chain of Iron ans he certainly thinks about her” - this was in context of physical appearances
- There is A LOT of kissing in Chain of Iron (Cassie says the saying “the second book is the make-out book” is true for TLH)
- Re new characters: No Morgensterns appear; we see Eugenia return and get to know her a bit more, we see how her and Thomas are coping after losing Barbara
- Elias’ relationship with his family is addressed in ChoI
- There is a fun scene in ChoI that involves James and Farsi that Cassie thinks we’ll really like; Cordelia teaches him a lot about Persian culture and the meanings of certain spoilery things
- Cortana is important; the fact that Cortana was able to wound Belial made Cordelia more interesting in Cortana’s history and abilities
- The Fairie blades Matthew, Anna and Cordelia got from Malcolm in ChoG are not important; the Blackthorn sword is important and we’ll find out why we don’t see it in TDA, why the Blackthorns don’t have it anymore and what happened to it
- We’re gonna learn Cordelia’s, Alastair’s and James’ middle names in ChoI
- Matthew will tell someone about his secret, which will make his relationship with this person more solid
- Lucie doesn’t lose her optimism but goes through some difficult stuff; she thinks Belial is deeply sexist
- Grace believes she doesn’t have tender feelings for anyone or anything because Tatiana brought her up to believe that; we will learn a lot more about her, her growing up, ans her history with Jesse in ChoI
- “Matthew has coped with having a great secret by being a cheerful drunk, Alastair copes by being grumpy”
- Alastair’s grappling with the return of his father and trying to convince the Merry Thieves that he wants to make it up to Thomas and the rest of them while still being his grumpy self, as he’s not someone who “lays his heart out at other peoples feet and let them walk on it”
- Lucie “mostly” doesn’t tell anybody about Jesse, at least not anybody that we would think of - but that doesn’t mean people don’t find out anyway
- We see Anna and Ariadne spend time together and have an interesting and pretty intense relationship

It bothers me so much that the cover is reversible just to keep the James stans at bay, I remember some of them making the most disgusting comments directed at Grace because they were bitter and they somehow get rewarded for it?
All I’ve been able to think about was the way cc got so pissed at people saying that the james pov of the whispering room scene was unnecessary and sexualized Cordelia for no reason and somehow all of this behavior was justified??
(I know how stupid this argument will sound to James stans, but I don’t care every recent tlh promotion has made me upset)
But also it hasn’t been proved that James is on the other side so I’m still going to hold onto a Kamala cover in denial.
Ughhhhhhhh yes, no one is forcing you to like Grace just because she's more likely to be in the cover! Yeah, literally, not the fandom being rewarded for throwing a fit over the aesthetic of the book covers and CC throwing a fit because we told her sexualizing minors + WOC is unnecessary and disrespectful! Sounds about right. I'M CHOOSING TO BELIEVE IT'S KAMALA. If the person on the cover has short hair, unless their skin is showing, Kamala had a haircut and wears suits now. Good for her, I love that half of the book was dedicated to her healing and reconnecting with her culture and identity!

Thoughts on Thomas and Alastair reading red white and Royal blue together in modern AU.
uhm yES PLEASE
This contains spoilers for Red, White and Royal Blue. Enjoy!
Imagine them in bed right after dinner cause they're one of those couples who ditch their friends to read
Thomas coming back home with this book Matthew and Cordelia have been ranting about for the past weeks
And Alastair is weirded out by the fact that he has two copies, "Why would you buy two?"
Thomas just shrugs, "I didn't. Cordelia gave me hers, cause she told me you'd spoil anything the second you read it."
They settle in bed and Alastair waits until Thomas is ten pages in to start his, cause Cordelia wasn't wrong about him spoiling everything
Thomas is a calm reader, only crying when you're supposed to cry and reading a book without having to talk about it for the rest of your life
Alastair is the complete opposite
He frowns and screams at the books and always goes to Thomas to make him read single sentences before starting to rant about what fucked up shit the characters are doing
Thomas usually doesn't understand anything of what he says, but he also stops doing whatever he's doing, focusing all his attention on Alastair until he just storms out of the room to continue reading the book
Alastair is also a ugly crier when it comes to books
And a thrower
He once hit Thomas by mistake and it was because of a character's death. Imagine his guilt just adding to his grief and picture a very distraught Alastair while he's being coddled by his boyfriend
Alastair has laughed and chuckled way too many times in Thomas' opinion, but hasn't commented on anything yet
Until, "Oh my sweet jesus, bOY YOUR GAY IS SHOWING."
Thomas has to laugh at that and turns towards him, "What happened?"
Alastair is shaking his head in disbelief, "Alex is hating Henry with every fiber of his body one page and then he's brushing his posters the next? He's dumb."
"He reminds me of someone." he mutters
Alastair ignores him
"I'm living for Henry calling Alex out on his shit behaviour." Alastair whispers at some point, with a large smile on his face
Something hits Thomas on the leg and when he looks up he notices Alastair with his eyes and mouth wide, "The cAKE!"
"Homoerotic frat bro mishap - gotta love this woman."
"Tom," he calls him, "have you ever hate-read my wikipedia page?"
"You don't have a wik-"
"But, honestly, who does he think he's fooling? This boy is dumb dumb." He laughs, "Mad stupid."
From time to time Thomas just hears "Stan Zahra." or "Stan Ellen." and he just smiles
At some point Alastair just screams-laughs and goes "I'm going to thROW UP ON YOU, I'M DYING." before falling silent again without any trace of amusement seconds later
Thomas is startled when Alastair screech, "BABYY!"
"What?"
"ALEX IS SAYING HENRY'S SKIN IS SOFT."
Thomas is enjoying the book just as much, but he can't wait for the moment when they both realise they like each other, so he just keeps reading
"Alex was fAST starting to see Henry as a human being and not some kind of monster."
"Oh my god, why is Alex being such a dickhead-"
After a few minutes of silence, Alastair gasps, bringing his book higher and buring his face between the pages before screeching again.
"WHAT'S GOING OOON?"
Thomas snorts with wide eyes
"HE'S CHECKING FOR HENRY'S TEXTS!!!"
After a while, Alastair turns to Thomas, brushing his arm, "Are you liking it?"
He nods, "I like the fact that Henry uses capitals at the beginning of his texts while Alex doesn't, it's the little things."
During The Turkey Scene™️ Alastair just loses it and Thomas has to stop reading to calm him down
"Oh god Tom fucking finally-" he turns to Thomas, "Henry looks fucking rested for once."
Thomas nods again, "And Alex noticed."
That makes a wide grin spread over Alastair's face
Thomas understands he's reached the New Year's Eve when all he can hear from Alastair are gasps and curses
"NO. NONONO. NOO!" Alastair hits Thomas on the arm, "Alex just kissed Nora and Henry ran away."
Thomas smirks, "Just keep reading."
"THEY'RE KISSING. GOD YES. THEY'RE KISSING."
"NOOOOO!" Alastairs screams, "WHY DID HE LEAVE WTF?!?!"
"Thomas I'm breaking up with you if you don't tell me now this is gonna be fixed somehow in the next three pages."
Thomas just clicks his tongue, shaking his head
"Wha-" Alastair just huffs a laugh. He turns to Thomas, pointing to the book, "Baby have you read this? Alex is- He thinks he's what now?" He's straight up laughing now, "Straight?!"
"He did what with Liam?"
"This is literally the gayest shit I've ever read in my life."
"Nah ha, I don't believe it."
"How can he think he's straight?"
"Oh god they watched porn together- HE JERKED HIM OFF."
Alastair just hits his head against the headboard, "I didn't think I'd have to go through the who the fuck am I in this book. I THOUGHT IT WAS PRETTY CLEAR JUST BY THE FACT THAT HE FUCKING CARESSED HENRY'S POSTERS."
"AND THEN THIS NEVERENDING LIST OF GAY THINGS."
Alastair panicked for a short time when Henry was seen with that blonde but started screeching again after a moment
Thomas bursts into laughter when he heard Alastair mutters God save the Queen
"'I want you on the bed.' OH JESUS CHRIST THOMAS IT'S US."
"Tom?"
Thomas turns when he hears the hesitancy in his boyfriend's voice. Alastair's face is red and he's biting his lower lip
"You okay? What part are you reading?"
"No, uhm," Alastair scratches his head, "can we -" he clears his voice, "Can we make out?"
Thomas blinks a couple of times, "Sure."
A heavy make out session ensues before they both can start reading again
"We need to buy cupcakes tomorrow." Alastair mutters at some point, chewing on his lip
"Thomas this fucking book is the best thing I've ever read. I'm loving it so much."
Alastair closes the book around midnight, but Thomas knows he's not finished. He doesn't look his way thinking he's just gonna go to the bathroom
When Thomas senses him move around on the sheets and lay his head on hip lap, he closes the book too and look down at his boyfriend
"What's going on? We just made out."
Alastair grunts in his legs and looks up at him, "You're my match."
Thomas doesn't understand, but he smiles and leans down to kiss him
He resumes reading and realises Alastair had read more than him when he reaches Alex's and Ellen's conversation about matches. Thomas looks at Alastair once again and pesters him with kisses
It's around 3am when Alastair starts yawning
"Alas, you should go to bed."
He shakes his head, "No, I'm not tired, I wanna finish the book."
"The book will be here tomorrow."
"I don't care."
He drops the fight, knowing perfectly fine that he'll never win this
Alastair can be quite impressive when he finds something he likes - especially when it's books
"Fucking homophobes."
"I'm gonna riot if somebody doesn't let Alex call Henry right the fuck now."
"HENRY ASKED ALEX IF HE IS OKAY? BABY WE'RE WORRIED ABOUT YOU."
The end of the book is read so fast that Thomas can't keep up with him and is now more than 20 pages back
Alastair is a crying and screaming mess by the end of it and Thomas has never seen him so upset in their time together
He's just spoiled the whole book for him, but he doesn't care. He doesn't care that it's now 5am and they have work in a couple of hours, cause Alastair just looks his way with wide eyes and his mouth open as if he's just realized something shocking
"Oh my god, did Pez, June and Nora had a threesome in that hotel room?"

Do you remember what episode was it when they were talking about how to split rooms and Veth suggests Jester and Fjord share a room and Jester turns it down and makes it a point to go to the other room where Fjord wasn’t in? Is that the same episode Caleb tells Fjord that Jester can punch him through a wall?
Oh man. I feel like this ask is super passive aggressive, but just in case it isn’t... sure, I’ll play.
The episode was ep 54 “Well Beneath” and both interactions happen at the same time, but I suspect you already knew that, anon.
I think there’s a couple interesting things that keep getting overlooked when it comes to this exchange when Fandom talks about it, though. Especially when painted as proof that Fjord doesn’t respect Jester’s strength as much as Caleb does. Which absolutely isn’t the case.
I think, firstly, for context from Fjord’s POV it’s worth noting that this is very soon after the Pirate Arc, in which he struggled for weeks to precisely keep his friends safe under constant threat and felt responsible for it. Secondly, during that arc he slowly became more aware of the way Jester’s cheerfulness is a front. Starting with the jellyfish talk and leading to his efforts to cheer her up after the whole blue dragon thing, which we know he feels responsible for despite it being an unfortunate mix of events. He also started becoming more aware of how much her support meant for him (see the second temple, in which he was moved by her concern but also kept complimenting her fighting and spells at every given turn). Finally, let’s not forget they were preparing to sleep in a super shady place and boys and girls were going to room separately. I would argue, after the Iron Shepherd’s, there’s certain degree of separation anxiety for Fjord and, as far as they knew at this point of the Xhorhas arc, they were in hostile territory. So no, Fjord isn’t saying “Jester I think you are too weak” he is saying “Jester, your safety is important to me and I am trying to be more vocal about it”. In a hilariously misguided way, which is hilarious for someone as smooth as Fjord, but later experience has proved he gets very clumsy around her because of his growing crush.
As for Jester’s reaction, I think it’s important to note, first and foremost, that she was already crossed at Fjord and Veth before this conversation. She was pissed because she was nearly out of spells and asked them not to go into the well to investigate because she wouldn’t be able to heal them if something went wrong. And they were too curious to listen to her. Remember, what Jester actually called Fjord out on after the HFB WASNT that he left her with the dragon but that he disappeared. Again, separation anxiety. So she’s angry and then Fjord asks if she’ll be safe and she looks angry. But then her friends start loudly, and right in front of her, teasing him about it. This is the guy she is in love with and just convinced herself doesn’t like her back. How excruciating must that be? No wonder she walks away to her bedroom. Also, consider, she doesn’t snap at Fjord over the comment. She does snap at Veth about the teasing, insisting Fjord had no romantic inclinations while making that comment (lol it definitely came from his feeling for her but we know that now for sure).
Finally, I don’t see that exchange as Caleb respecting her more. Honestly. I think it’s a very interesting illustration of something I already talked about and is the fact that, just because Jester CAN take care of herself, it doesn’t mean she shouldn’t be checked in with, shouldn’t be asked “are you okay with this?” You can know someone is highly capable and still worry about them. It’s not mutually exclusive. I do appreciate Caleb loudly reminding everyone how strong Jester is, their friendship is one of my favorite things. The way he delivered that line was hilarious (though sadly ignored by her and everyone else in the middle of the ensuing teasing). But that’s about it for me. If anything, knowing about his crush on her, it almost feels like he kinda WANTED to incite conflict over the comment but it’s hard to speculate about it of course.
Lastly, I think it’s interesting to note that Fjord does this exact same thing a while later, after they just lost Yasha. When, again, they are staying in weird sleeping arrengments (dynasty military camp, this time), when again Jester is out of spells, when they are shaken and tense and feeling hunted down by TLH. He leaves the room and asks “are you going to be alright here?” And he’s v obviously talking to Jester because of his sight line but Sam dismisses it with “yeah, it’s a room” though Jester nods gently in response at the same time. She doesn’t take it as offense (when she isn’t already pissed).
Also, because now I’m thinking about it, you could say there’s other two parallels on Jester’s side to this exchange. Firstly, when she checks in with him in the Xhorhouse and implies they ran away from the ocean, to which Fjord responds defensively. And, much later, when she stops him before they walk into the cathedral, holds his hand and whispers “please be careful, please”. Neither of these means she thinks he’s weak or doesn’t respect him, right.
I don’t know where I’m going with this other than that scene came at a time where Fjord and Jester’s relationship was slowly beginning to mend after the Pirate Arc (I would argue it didn’t entirely return to their easy comfortable rapport until the Kiln Talk though it did get much better after the moorbounder/potions conversation) but people keep taking it out of context (both within their arcs and within the episode itself) and everyone is free to make whatever readings they want but ignoring nuances leads to misguided conclusions in my opinion. So yeah.
Anyway, the ep you were looking for was 54 (wow, over 60 eps ago!)

James Herondale and Cordelia Carstairs: 1001 Nights and Layla and Majnun
Yet another essay/analysis about James Herondale and Cordelia Carstairs and the references of their story with classic Middle East literature books such as “1001 Nights” and “Layla and Majnun” and how those books might have inspired some TLH storylines.
Similarities between “1001 Nights” characters and James and Cordelia
The Layla references by James and Alastair
The Scheherezade storyteller
The metaphor of James and Cordelia’s relationship
Cordelia as James’s link to this world
In the Classic Reimagined with Shadowhunters characters book, Cordelia and James are pictured as Scheherazade and sultan Shahryar from “1001 Nights”, and she is probably telling him a story in that art. This book is a collection of folk tales and it is often referred to as “Arabian Nights” and has elements of different Middle East cultures. In short, the sultan Shahryar marries virgin women and then he kills them after the night they spend together. After some time, there aren’t virgins anymore, so the vizier's daughter, Scheherazade, offers herself as the next wife/queen and survives because for 1000 nights she tells the sultan a story, which she never finishes, to keep him curious. The sultan spares her life because he wants to know how the stories end, and after 3 years (1,001 days) she finishes the stories but the sultan has fallen in love with her and he doesn’t kill her.
Like Scheherazade, Cordelia likes books and likes to tell stories. Cordelia is Persian and this collection of tales also contains Persian elements, and the name Scheherazade means “of noble lineage” from Middle Persian. Cordelia also offered herself to marry James to save him from facing judgement from the Clave.
The name of the Sultan, Shaharyar, means “holder of the realm” as king/prince, because the “shah” was the crown king/prince/emperor in Persia/Iran. James loves to read as well and he has expressed several times in CoG2 that he wants to hear Cordelia’s stories.
“Night” in Arabic is “Layla”, which is not only the title of “1001 Nights” in Arabic (“Alf Laylah wa-Laylah”), but it also refers to “Layla and Majnun”. The only time James calls Cordelia “Layla” is when he has the scalding fever and is in and out of consciousness. Alastair also calls Cordelia “Layla”, which is not just super cute but also a reference to their Persian heritage and it also refers to the aesthetic behind Cordelia and James. Cordelia is the night and James the day, but Cordelia is also the fire and James is the shadow. Cordelia is also a heroine like Scheherazade, of course. In literature, the Scheherazade storyteller is also someone who tells a story and is fighting with death, which means that they are telling their story to the reader but they know that they don’t have much time because death is around the corner. If you consider the trouble happening in CoG2, every character of TLH risks to die, especially since we have different POVs and each character tells their own story from their perspective. The only character writer in TLH is Lucie, who also notices how life is terrible and unpredictable, while she only wanted to put joy into her stories:
She felt somewhere in the core of her heart the truth of what her mother had just said. And one should put truth in books, she thought, but this would never be the sort of thing she put in the pages of The Beautiful Cordelia. Books were about experiencing joy. This was the raw and awful stuff of life.
It was much too terrible.
When James has the scalding fever, Cordelia reads him poems and tells him about “Layla and Majnun” by Nizami. From Days Past: Cirenworth Hall, 1900:
She read him the poems of Nizami, and especially the story of Layla and Majnun, one she clearly loved and had known since she was very small. Her cheeks grew unexpectedly red at the more romantic parts: the poor boy falling in love with the beautiful Layla on first sight, wandering mad in the desert when they were separated.
If we were to analyze this, we could say that it reflects James and Cordelia’s story to some degree. James didn’t fall for Cordelia at first sight because he had the gracelet in most of the times they met through the years, but when the gracelet is off and especially after this moment with Cordelia tending to him while he was sick, James is not able to keep her out of his mind even when he later meets Grace again in Idris. Now I don’t know what will happen, but until the gracelet is off, James will act as doesn’t love Cordelia unless their bond breaks the spell of the gracelet. Or Cortana could destroy the gracelet? The last part of this section I reported above “wandering mad in the desert when they were separated” made me think about the shadow’s realm. The realm is like a desert because there is nobody around, and when James goes there before he finally meets Belial, it’s deserted as there is no one there (even if I guess there are demons, but it’s mostly a lonely place). Cordelia is the only one who went to the shadow realm with James and seems to be a threat to Belial in that dimension, because of Cortana. Will James go back to the shadow realm and will Cordelia have to look for him again like at the end of CoG2? That could have been a foreshadowing for the ending and of James and Cordelia finally meeting Belial, but who knows if that won’t come into play again in the future. James could be unable to go back to the normal world and he could be stuck in the realm. Just a thought.
Even when James has the scalding fever and travels to the shadow realm, Cordelia is the only one who is able to bring him back and to their world, which means that there is a link between them, something in Cordelia and James both, a pull. Perhaps it’s the affection they feel for each other, the fiery passion that they could unleash after the gracelet is finally off. Like we saw in the whispering room. That was raw and unrelenting passion, the metaphor of Cordelia and James as a couple: fire and shadow. Cordelia is the fire/match that lit James on fire. Here’s more quotes from Chapter 3, Days Past: Cirenworth Hall, 1900 to support this idea:
He reached for her, and the shadow that was his hand caught hers, darkness against flesh. He wondered how his touch felt to her. His whole body was tensed, like a horse shying from thunder. The room smelled of lightning.
“James, you must hold on. You must. Don’t go anywhere,” Cordelia said. “Stay with me.”
“ ‘ I sought not fire, yet is my heart all flame. Layla, this love is not of earth.’   ”
He shuddered and felt himself come back to this world fully, felt his body return to the space he occupied.
Note: There is also a parallel scene where it’s Alastair who tells Cordelia to stay with him, which could be a hint that Alastair might be the link for Cordelia to stay in this world if she ever falls into the shadow realm with James, perhaps (like Lucie could also be another link for James as his sister). In the flashback from Chapter 20, Days Past: Cirenworth Hall, 1898:
When he looked suspicious, she said, “I could use some help, Alastair. You see how careless my form is.” Alastair came and took the knife from her. “Very careless,” he agreed. “I know swordplay comes naturally to you, but not everything will. You must slow down. Pay attention to your feet. Now, follow my gestures. That’s it, Layla. Stay with me.” And she would.
To reinforce the parallelism between famous Middle East literature and English literature, we also have “The Beautiful Cordelia”, which is not a real book but a story in the making, since Lucie started writing it when she was 12 and she still hasn’t finished it. It’s also a story-within-the-story like the narrative in “1001 Nights”. Lucie is also telling her own story to the readers, and in CoG2 she is writing about Cordelia who is a beautiful red haired woman. Cruel Prince James, inspired by her brother James, is one of the characters of her book even though we don’t know if he is the Lord Hawke who adored Cordelia and supposedly is her main love interest.
One thing that differs in “1001 Nights” and “Layla and Majnun” is the ending. The first has a happy ending because Scheherazade and Shahryar fall in love and she doesn’t die because she becomes queen. In the other book, however, which is sort of a “Romeo and Juliet” love story, the ending is not happy. Layla’s father doesn’t want her to be with Majnun, because he considers the man mentally unstable (Majnun means “crazy”). In the end Layla marries someone else and Majnun roams in the desert because he can’t accept to live in a world without her. They die without seeing each other again, both heartbroken because they can’t be with the other person.
Now don’t take the books word for word. They are inspirations for the main story for sure, but the good thing of inspirations is that they never have the same ending of the original.
Thanks for reading! I know it’s quite long, but I don’t have the gift of brevity, I’m sorry. 🤣

So up until a few days ago, the number of blogs I followed was 176. This figure hadn’t changed for some time, and I always kept tabs on this - for no particular reason - I just liked to be organised with the running of my blog. Now the day came when I noticed the number being reduced to 175, which is strange because I hadn’t unfollowed anyone recently. I didn’t think too much on it, assuming the person (whoever it was), deactivated.
But just today, I was searching for CC’s blog, to access an ask she had regarding the Jordelia whispering room scene. There was this one particular ask where she revealed she might write it from James’s perspective. And I wanted to go through the reblogs to understanding who was for/against it, to determine where majority of the tumblr fandom stood on the subject - given a few of my mutuals/ people I follow, already expressed their displeasure after it was released last Thursday. But I suddenly realised that she blocked me.
It was then I put the pieces together. Yes, I enjoyed some books from TSC in the past. But I’d been critical about TLH (in terms of poc rep), within the past few months - even being vocal about my inability to finish CHOI because the storyline might’ve been interesting - but I hadn’t been able to connect with TLH gang (in terms of their characterisation and arcs - this is mostly in relation to Alastair, Anna and Kamala btw).
Bare in mind that in all my criticisms, I’ve been careful not to tag her, her book titles or her characters. Most of the time, I hadn’t tagged anything at all. The only people who would’ve accessed my commentary were my mutuals and followers. And I made it pretty clear from the get-go last year, that my opinions on CC and her books were nuanced. So unless you followed me, or followed someone who reblogged my posts, you’d have to actively seek out my blog to see these critiques. I didn’t think a lot of people had time to pay attention to mine, that is. But I guess that’s how CC’s rolling these days.
Not once had I said anything derogatory about her - just that her rep (or the lack of accuracy in it), was poor. Believe me, the last thing I EVER want to do is vilianise one of the few Jewish writers in YA lit. But those who hold a large audience and platform, hold huge responsibilities as well. I wasn’t shouting into the void or anything, because a lot of my fellow poc, agreed with me. Nor was I making open-ended statements because, not only did I say that her rep was bad, I suggested ways it could’ve improved. But if blocking is CC’s only strategy to avoid critiques (a VERY clear distinction from ‘hate’), it seems like a cowardice move on her part.

wowowow
that is a LOT to unpack wow ok
that’s... very messed up. i keep coming back to all the times cc has claimed to try to represent people w her books that don’t normally get representation. but it seems like every time we try to tell her ‘hey here’s a better way u could represent us’ or ‘actually this representation isn’t actually good for us like u think’ she turns around and tells us that it’s HER books and she can decide what she writes
it just seems very hypocritical of her
and don’t get me wrong, i fully believe that for most people blocking ppl you don’t want to interact with or see on your dash is healthy and creates the best possible tumblr experience, but i also think it’s different when you’re a fandom blog spending lots and lots of time on tumblr every day and creating friendships and making content etc vs if you’re an author just using the site to promote your books. there’s a different level of responsibility that you’re held to, whether it’s fair or not to her.
there’s a quote that comes to mind: “you can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”. there are ALWAYS going to be ppl who don’t agree with the books or downright dislike them. blocking ppl who disagree w those books tho is definitely from my view just what you said above: a cowardice move. and yeah. that sounds kinda harsh. but how long have we been screaming about our representation? how long will we have to continue screaming about it? it’s getting really old, trying to hold authors accountable for their works. it’d be nice if just one of them would listen.
ty for bringing this to my attention babe
